
GREAT BEND, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs saw its three-game winning streak come to an end on Monday night, with a 10-9 loss to the Great Bend Bat Cats.
Despite the loss, the Monarchs took the series from the Bat Cats, 2-1. Great Bend won the first half of the Jayhawk Collegiate League.
The Monarchs held a 9-3 lead after the top of the fourth inning, but the Bat Cats responded with three of their own to pull within 9-6. Great Bend (18-7) tallied four more runs in the bottom of the seventh for the 10-9 lead.
Hutchinson (10-12) could not push any more runs across after their nine scored in the first five innings.
Jaden Gustafson led the Monarchs with a 2-for-5 night at the plate, driving in a team-high three. Paris Pridgen connected with a three-run home run in the fourth inning for his first home run of the summer. Drew Bugner also contributed with a double and two RBI in the loss.
Camden Cornelius suffered the loss for the Monarchs on the mound, going 1.2 innings of relief, allowing two runs. Alec Stanfield got the start, going three innings, allowing two runs. Brady Bell pitched the final 3.1 innings and allowed six runs.
The Monarchs are off on Tuesday and return to Hobart-Detter Field on Wednesday to open a three-game series against the Derby Twins. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Monarchs host the Twins Wednesday and Thursday before traveling to Derby to close the series out on Friday.
