Wichita State completed the sweep with a comeback win in the finale, scoring both runs in the Top of the 6th. LAST MEETING VS. THE COUGARS Wichita State needed two come from behind wins to take the regular season series with the Cougars. The Shockers needed 11 innings to win the opener, 8-7, and then scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to win Game 2, 5-4. Houston avoided the sweep with a 4-0 win in the finale. 40 WIN SEASON Wichita State recorded its 40th win of the season on Sunday, April 23 vs. East Carolina. It marks only the third 40-win season in school history, joining the 2005 and 2021 teams. The 2005 team holds the current school record with 46 wins. 2023 AAC REGULAR SEASON CHAMPS Wichita State won its second American Athletic Conference regular season championship. It marks the fourth regular season conferene title in school history and second in the last three seasons. That season total ranked 26th nationally, while the Shockers also ranked 31st nationally in average attendace (715). HOME SWEET HOME Just a season ago Wichita State took on the role of road warrior. The Shockers had 27 home games at Wilkins Stadium in 2023 compared to only 11 in 2022. During the month of March Wichita State only left&nbsp;Wichita once. Seventeen of those 27 home games took&nbsp;place in the month of March, including matchups against 2022 NCAA Regional teams: Stanford, Nebraska, Missouri State, Arkansas, Minnesota and South Florida. 🏀 KU freshman Udeh enters transfer portal

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Salthawks baseball team will return to Hobart-Detter Field&nbsp; to host the Salina Central Mustangs on Thursday, May 11th postponed from April 25th due to weather. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m.

The Salthawks are 3-15 following getting a win in a suspended game Wednesday in Derby, while the Mustangs are 4-14 on the season and come in to today's games after dropping games with Andover Central last Tuesday.

All home and road games can be heard on Hutch Post, while all home games will also have live video on Hutch Post and on the NFHS Network Hutch Channel. Pregame coverage with Sean Boston begins at 3:55 p.m.

The game will be the last regular season game with KSHSAA class 5A playoffs starting next week.

HAYS, Kan. - The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) announced last week to its membership that the 2024 Class 3-2-1A Boys State Wrestling Tournament will be held in Salina. Fort Hays State University has home conference basketball games scheduled that weekend in February that involve four MIAA institutions, conflicting with dates of the state wrestling tournament. "We realize the significance to our community of facilitating multiple events throughout the year," FHSU Director of Athletics Curtis Hammeke said. "Our staff works diligently attempting to balance these events with our own schedules. When we realized that solutions for solving the basketball conflict were not realistic logistically, we began to explore alternatives to keep a tournament in Hays." "The Kansas State High School Activities Association appreciates the longstanding efforts of the Fort Hays State University Athletic Department and the Hays community in providing championship caliber efforts while hosting state championship events for our member school students and communities," KSHSAA Executive Director Bill Faflick said. "We truly appreciate the FHSU administrators in trying to creatively solve the scheduling conflict. This move for next year is no indication that KSHSAA is moving the state wrestling event permanently. We analyze our sites for all our state championships annually to make the best decisions for our schools and hosts." FHSU proposed to host the Girls 4A-1A state tournament the week before on Thursday, February 15 and Friday, February 16, along with a Boys regional on Saturday, February 17. Eventually, KSHSAA opted to have both tournaments in Salina over a three day period during the traditional championship week. "We felt like we had a good proposal, but an alternative concept was selected," Hammeke said. "We remain hopeful to have either a boys or girls state wrestling championship in Hays in the future. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Nick Pratto homered and Brad Keller won for the first time in nearly a month as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 9-1 on Wednesday night.

Keller (3-3), who leads the majors with 32 walks allowed, got into immediate trouble walking the first two batters he faced, but escaped first-inning damage with a double play and strikeout.

“We had a chance to put some runs on the board in the first inning and we didn’t,” White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said. “We had them on the ropes there and he was able to get out of it.”

Gavin Sheets walked to lead off the second and scored on Hanser Alberto’s single for Chicago’s lone run.

“The walks in the beginning, he easily could have fought himself hard,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “(He showed) some resolve. He really executed some pitches, especially with the off-speed stuff. The third inning he came out and threw some good fastballs in the zone. That kind of reset the match-up. It wasn’t just one pitch they had to worry about.”

Keller finished five innings, allowing one run on three hits and four walks, striking out four to earn his first win since April 12.

“I think that (third) was by far my best inning,” Keller said. “The offense putting up numbers like they did allowed me to just go out there and throw strikes. That inning gave me confidence to keep going.”

The Royals batted around in the first, collecting six hits, including Pratto’s two-out RBI single, grabbing a 4-0 lead while forcing Lance Lynn (1-5) to toss 37 pitches in the inning.

“Making pitchers work, making them earn their outs, that’s a big thing in this game,” Pratto said. “If you can make the other team work we’re going to get opportunities to do damage.”

Lynn surrendered seven runs on nine hits two walks, fanning four over five innings.

“A lot of mistakes in the middle of the plate,” Lynn said. “I couldn’t get the ball elevated when I needed to and when I tried to go down it was in the middle of the plate, too. They made me pay for it.”

Pratto’s homer, a two-run shot to right, gave Kansas City a 7-1 lead in the fifth.

Michael Massey opened the fourth with his first home run of the season and Edward Olivares opened the seventh with his third homer. Massey and Vinnie Pasquantino each produced three hits.

“The home runs, obviously, were big,” Quatraro said. “It was just nice that it was production up and down. Walks, tough at-bats that we fought through. Really positive night overall for the offense.”

Four Royals relievers fanned seven over four scoreless innings.

Chicago had six hits, all singles. Luis Robert Jr. struck out four times, snapping an eight-game hitting streak.

White Sox OF Billy Hamilton was placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to May 7 with a left hamstring strain.

White Sox RHP Nick Padilla was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte, OF Jake Marisnick’s contract was selected from Charlotte, and RHP Alexander Colomé was designated for assignment.

FORT SCOTT – Held to three total hits on Wednesday, the Hutchinson Community College baseball team dropped Game 1 of the Region VI (Plains District) Tournament opening-round series on Wednesday at Lions Field.

Fort Scott hit six home runs and two Greyhound pitchers kept the Hutchinson offense quiet as the Blue Dragons dropped an 11-0 decision in seven innings to trail the best-of-3 series 1-0.

Game 2 of the series will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Lions Field.

Fort Scott, the leading home run-hitting team in the KJCCC this season, showed that power off in Game 1. The Greyhounds led off with home runs from Brody Szako and Evann Long. Szako hit two home runs in the game. The final homer, a two-run blast by Ayden Slott, ended the game in the seventh inning.

Blue Dragon starter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/smith_justin_u248">Justin Smith</a>&nbsp;(2-2) pitched two-plus innings. He left the game in the third with an injury he sustained in the first inning when he was struck with a hard ground ball up the middle.

Fort Scott's Jett Feltman (6-1) pitched 5 1-3 innings, allowing three hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Peyton Medeiros worked the final 1 2-3 innings, retiring all five batters he faced.

The last time the Blue Dragons dropped Game 1 of an opening-round series and rallied to win the series game in 2019. The Dragons dropped the opening game to Labette and Hobart-Detter Field and won the next two games 13-4 and 2-0 to advanced to the eight-team double-elimination tournament.

The Blue Dragons won the Jayhawk Conference league title for the first time in 31 years and set a school record for wins with a 44-8 record. The team set seven team records and tied another this season that ended in the Region VI championship game.

ASPEN GOETZ – 1st Team A sophomore first baseman from Rose Hill, Goetz put together one of the best single seasons in Blue Dragon history – a season that included numerous career, season and single-game records.

Goetz set both single-season and career records for home runs with 20 this season and 27 for her career. She obliterated the Blue Dragon single-season RBI record with 98 this season. That mark ranked fourth in the NJCAA at the end of the regular season.

Goetz owns the top two single-game RBI performances in program history. She had 10 RBIs against Seward County on March 22. She followed that with nine RBIs in a home game against Seward County on April 27 at Fun Valley.

For the season, Goetz posted a .462 batting average (No. 3 in Blue Dragon season history) with 80 hits (No. 3 in Blue Dragon season history). She had 17 doubles and scored 61 runs. Goetz's .908 season slugging percentage is second-best in single-season history.

Goetz tied for a season-high 23 multiple-hit games, including one five-hit game and a record-tying six-hit game against Seward County on March 22. She had six games of five or more RBIs.

MORGAN PENNYCUFF – 1st Team A sophomore pitcher from Augusta, Pennycuff had the most pitching wins in a single season since 2018, going 17-3 this season. Pennycuff earned two Region VI Tournament wins.

Making 23 starts and 24 overall appearances, Pennycuff worked a season high 87 1-3 innings with a 3.29 ERA. She had four complete games, two shutouts and combined on six other shutouts. She was part of one combined no-hitter against Northwest Tech.

Pennycuff had 82 strikeouts and walked 30. Opponents hit just .228 against her.

Pennycuff helped the Blue Dragons post a team 2.80 earned-run average, the second-best team mark in program history. She allowed less than one hit per inning, giving up 74 total hits.

RILEY WERTZ – 2nd Team Earlier this season, the sophomore closer from Maize became the Jayhawk Conference career record holder for saves. After eight saves in 2023, Wertz now has 17 career saves in her two years as a Blue Dragon.

Wertz made 36 appearances this season, posting a 3-2 record with a 1.88 ERA, the sixth-lowest ERA in single-game Blue Dragon history. Over 67 inning of work, Wertz struck out 117 batters, 13th most in single-season history.

For her career, Wertz went 16-3 with 17 saves and a 1.59 earned run average. In 149 2-3 innings, Wertz had 269 career strikeouts, fifth most in program history.

OLIVIA SANDOVAL – 2nd Team The freshman third baseman from Newton broke the Blue Dragon single-season record for doubles with 22 this season. Her 77 total hits ranked No. 4 in single-season Hutchinson history.

Sandoval hit .435 with two home runs and 59 RBIs. She scored 60 runs this season.

Sandoval had 22 multi-hit games with a season-high four hits. She closed the season on a 16-game hitting streak, which is the fifth longest in program history.

JAELEIGH DARNELL – 2nd Team A freshman outfielder from Auburn, Nebraska, Darnell hit .394 this season with 41 total hits. She had nine doubles, a triple and four home runs. She had a .615 slugging percentage and a .515 on-base percentage. Darnell drew 23 walks. She scored 32 runs and drove in 34 RBIs.

Darnell had 10 two-hit games this season. She hit a big three-run home run against Barton on April 12 at Fun Valley, helping the Dragons to a 9-1 victory.

MADISON GRIMES – Honorable Mention A third-year sophomore from Andale hit better than .400 for the second time in her Blue Dragon career, Grimes hit .415 with a .459 on-base percentage and .596 slugging percentage. Grimes had 71 total hits with 14 doubles, four triples, three homers and 55 RBIs. Grimes also led the team with 22 stolen bases. Grimes scored 69 runs and produced several incredible defensive players as shortstop.

For her Blue Dragon career, Grimes is the career leader in batting average (.444), at-bats (482), hits (214), runs scored (180), RBIs (174), doubles (42), triples (11), total bases (335) and extra-base hits (72). She is No. 2 in stolen bases with 81.

Grimes' 214 hits are third most in Jayhawk Conference history.

RILEY WERTZ – Honorable Mention At the plate this season, Wertz hit .381 with 40 hits. She had six doubles and 10 home runs, which ties for ninth most in single-season history. Wertz had 46 RBIs and her .724 slugging percentage ranked No. 13 in program history.

Wertz produced the third-highest single-game RBI total in program history when she drove in eight RBIs against Northwest Tech on April 19.

ALLIE STIPSITS – Honorable Mention A sophomore catcher from Olathe, Stipsits had a solid season hitting .296 in 50 games this season. Stipsits had 45 total hits with 11 doubles, three home runs and 22 RBIs.

Defensively, Stipsits had a .991 fielding percentage, throwing out 5 of 44 stolen base attempts. She had just three errors on 327 total defensives chances.

EMILY MUNSON – Honorable Mention A sophomore starting pitcher from Omaha, Nebraska, Munson had a 7-1 record with a 3.84 ERA in 19 total appearances and 16 starts. Over 54 2-3 innings of work, Munson allowed 64 hits and 34 runs with 34 strikeouts and 16 walks. Opponent hit .287 against Munson this season.

KORRI LIES – Honorable Mention A freshman multi-position player from Cheney, Lies hit .301, starting 39 games in center field this season. Lies had 28 total hits with 11 doubles with 34 runs scored and 20 RBIs.

ALEXIS MASTIN – Honorable Mention A freshman outfielder from Maize, Mastin was 1 of 3 Blue Dragons with 10 or more home runs this season, including one in the Region VI Tournament. Mastin hit .372 with 51 total hits and 14 doubles. Mastin had 50 RBIs, 14 doubles and 43 runs scored.

The team set seven team records and tied another this season that ended in the Region VI championship game.ASPEN GOETZ – 1st Team A sophomore first baseman from Rose Hill, Goetz put together one of the best single seasons in Blue Dragon history – a season that included numerous career, season and single-game records.Goetz set both single-season and career records for home runs with 20 this season and 27 for her career. She obliterated the Blue Dragon single-season RBI record with 98 this season. That mark ranked fourth in the NJCAA at the end of the regular season.Goetz owns the top two single-game RBI performances in program history. She had 10 RBIs against Seward County on March 22. She followed that with nine RBIs in a home game against Seward County on April 27 at Fun Valley.For the season, Goetz posted a .462 batting average (No. 3 in Blue Dragon season history) with 80 hits (No. 3 in Blue Dragon season history). She had 17 doubles and scored 61 runs. Goetz's .908 season slugging percentage is second-best in single-season history.Goetz tied for a season-high 23 multiple-hit games, including one five-hit game and a record-tying six-hit game against Seward County on March 22. She had six games of five or more RBIs.MORGAN PENNYCUFF – 1st Team A sophomore pitcher from Augusta, Pennycuff had the most pitching wins in a single season since 2018, going 17-3 this season. Pennycuff earned two Region VI Tournament wins.Making 23 starts and 24 overall appearances, Pennycuff worked a season high 87 1-3 innings with a 3.29 ERA. She had four complete games, two shutouts and combined on six other shutouts. She was part of one combined no-hitter against Northwest Tech.Pennycuff had 82 strikeouts and walked 30. Opponents hit just .228 against her.Pennycuff helped the Blue Dragons post a team 2.80 earned-run average, the second-best team mark in program history. She allowed less than one hit per inning, giving up 74 total hits.RILEY WERTZ – 2nd Team Earlier this season, the sophomore closer from Maize became the Jayhawk Conference career record holder for saves. After eight saves in 2023, Wertz now has 17 career saves in her two years as a Blue Dragon.Wertz made 36 appearances this season, posting a 3-2 record with a 1.88 ERA, the sixth-lowest ERA in single-game Blue Dragon history. Over 67 inning of work, Wertz struck out 117 batters, 13th most in single-season history.For her career, Wertz went 16-3 with 17 saves and a 1.59 earned run average. In 149 2-3 innings, Wertz had 269 career strikeouts, fifth most in program history.OLIVIA SANDOVAL – 2nd Team The freshman third baseman from Newton broke the Blue Dragon single-season record for doubles with 22 this season. Her 77 total hits ranked No. 4 in single-season Hutchinson history.Sandoval hit .435 with two home runs and 59 RBIs. She scored 60 runs this season.Sandoval had 22 multi-hit games with a season-high four hits. She closed the season on a 16-game hitting streak, which is the fifth longest in program history.JAELEIGH DARNELL – 2nd Team A freshman outfielder from Auburn, Nebraska, Darnell hit .394 this season with 41 total hits. She had nine doubles, a triple and four home runs. She had a .615 slugging percentage and a .515 on-base percentage. Darnell drew 23 walks. She scored 32 runs and drove in 34 RBIs.Darnell had 10 two-hit games this season. She hit a big three-run home run against Barton on April 12 at Fun Valley, helping the Dragons to a 9-1 victory.MADISON GRIMES – Honorable Mention A third-year sophomore from Andale hit better than .400 for the second time in her Blue Dragon career, Grimes hit .415 with a .459 on-base percentage and .596 slugging percentage. Grimes had 71 total hits with 14 doubles, four triples, three homers and 55 RBIs. Grimes also led the team with 22 stolen bases. Grimes scored 69 runs and produced several incredible defensive players as shortstop.For her Blue Dragon career, Grimes is the career leader in batting average (.444), at-bats (482), hits (214), runs scored (180), RBIs (174), doubles (42), triples (11), total bases (335) and extra-base hits (72). She is No. 2 in stolen bases with 81.Grimes' 214 hits are third most in Jayhawk Conference history.RILEY WERTZ – Honorable Mention At the plate this season, Wertz hit .381 with 40 hits. She had six doubles and 10 home runs, which ties for ninth most in single-season history. Wertz had 46 RBIs and her .724 slugging percentage ranked No. 13 in program history.Wertz produced the third-highest single-game RBI total in program history when she drove in eight RBIs against Northwest Tech on April 19.ALLIE STIPSITS – Honorable Mention A sophomore catcher from Olathe, Stipsits had a solid season hitting .296 in 50 games this season. Stipsits had 45 total hits with 11 doubles, three home runs and 22 RBIs.Defensively, Stipsits had a .991 fielding percentage, throwing out 5 of 44 stolen base attempts. She had just three errors on 327 total defensives chances.EMILY MUNSON – Honorable Mention A sophomore starting pitcher from Omaha, Nebraska, Munson had a 7-1 record with a 3.84 ERA in 19 total appearances and 16 starts. Over 54 2-3 innings of work, Munson allowed 64 hits and 34 runs with 34 strikeouts and 16 walks. Opponent hit .287 against Munson this season.Munson also had one save this season.KORRI LIES – Honorable Mention A freshman multi-position player from Cheney, Lies hit .301, starting 39 games in center field this season. Lies had 28 total hits with 11 doubles with 34 runs scored and 20 RBIs.ALEXIS MASTIN – Honorable Mention A freshman outfielder from Maize, Mastin was 1 of 3 Blue Dragons with 10 or more home runs this season, including one in the Region VI Tournament. Mastin hit .372 with 51 total hits and 14 doubles. Mastin had 50 RBIs, 14 doubles and 43 runs scored.

The agreement allows Huggins to keep his job as the school's basketball coach, but the blunder will leave a lasting mark on his Hall of Fame career. During a call to a Cincinnati radio station Monday, Huggins was asked whether he had a chance of landing an Xavier player from the transfer portal. Huggins then made offensive comments about Xavier fans. He later apologized. Huggins will also be required to meet with LGBTQ+ leaders as part of the agreement.

West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins has agreed to a three-game suspension, a $1 million salary reduction and sensitivity training for using a homophobic slur during a radio interview, the university announced Wednesday.

The agreement allows Huggins to keep his job as the school's coach, but the blunder will leave a lasting mark on his Hall of Fame career.

West Virginia University President Gordon Gee and athletic director Wren Baker said in a joint statement that the university has "made it explicitly clear to Coach Huggins that any incidents of similar derogatory and offensive language will result in immediate termination."

Under the agreement, Huggins and all current and future athletics coaching staff will be required to undergo training that will be developed by the university's LGBTQ+ Center to address all aspects of inequality, including homophobia, transphobia and sexism. Huggins also will be required to meet with LGBTQ+ leaders from across the state.

"We will never truly know the damage that has been done by the words said in those 90 seconds," Gee and Baker said. "Words matter and they can leave scars that can never be seen. But words can also heal. And by taking this moment to learn more about another's perspective, speak respectfully and lead with understanding, perhaps the words 'do better' will lead to meaningful change for all."

Under the agreement, Huggins' salary of $4.15 million will be reduced by $1 million. That reduction will be used to directly support WVU's LGBTQ+ Center, as well as a mental health center at the university and other groups that support marginalized communities.

Huggins will be suspended for the first three games of the 2023-24 season. In addition, his contract will be amended from a multi-year agreement to a year-by-year agreement that will begin on May 10 of this year and end on April 30, 2024.

"Over the past 48 hours, I have reflected on the awful words that I shared on a radio program earlier this week," Huggins said in a separate statement Wednesday. "I deeply regret my actions, the hurt they unfairly caused others and the negative attention my words have brought to West Virginia University.

"West Virginia and West Virginia University are my home. I love this University and know first-hand that the education and experiences students receive here make a difference. I am truly sorry for the damage I have done. And I am grateful for the chance to move forward in a way that positively represents this University and our state."

Huggins used the slur to refer to Xavier fans on Monday while also denigrating Catholics during an appearance on Cincinnati radio station WLW. The West Virginia athletic department called the comments "offensive" and said it was reviewing the matter.

During the radio show, Huggins was asked about the transfer portal and whether he had a chance of landing a player at West Virginia from Xavier, a Jesuit school.

"Catholics don't do that," Huggins said. "I tell you what, any school that can throw rubber penises on the floor and then say they didn't do it, by God they can get away with anything.

"It was the Crosstown Shootout. What it was, was all those (expletive), those Catholic (expletive), I think."

In a speech on Wednesday, Xavier President Colleen Hanycz called Huggins' comments "repulsive and offensive."

"The deplorable mischaracterizations and homophobic slurs directed towards our LGBTQ+ and our Catholic communities were repulsive and offensive," Hanycz said before a press event detailing plans for a new medical school. "To those in our Xavier family who were directly targeted and harmed by these hateful words, be assured that you are invaluable members of our Xavier family and you belong here," Hanycz said. "Your presence makes us better."

Under the agreement, Huggins also will make a "substantial" donation to Xavier to support its Center for Faith and Justice and Center for Diversity and Inclusion.

Remarks about Catholics have been an issue with Gee in the past. Gee was hired at West Virginia in 2013, a year after he announced his retirement as Ohio State's president when he came under fire for jokingly referring to "those damn Catholics" at Notre Dame and poking fun at the academic quality of other schools.

Huggins entered the Basketball Hall of Fame last September. In 41 seasons, his teams have gone to 25 NCAA tournaments, finished ranked in the top 10 of The Associated Press poll seven times and had finished under .500 five times. The Mountaineers have 11 NCAA Tournament appearances under Huggins.

Huggins spent 16 seasons at Cincinnati before being fired in 2005 in a power struggle with the school's president as well as the aftermath of a 2004 drunken driving arrest. After spending one season at Kansas State, Huggins took his dream job at West Virginia, his alma mater, in 2007.

🏀 West Virginia's Huggins agrees to $1M pay cut, 3-game suspension for homophobic slur

DERBY, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Salthawks used a strong outing from the bullpen to salvage a split with the Derby Panthers on Wednesday afternoon, 3-2. 

The win came 19 hours after <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/634f1a37-0d45-4ed8-8d49-6751a2c3ca6e">play had been suspended</a> in the fourth inning on Tuesday night, and Hutchinson leading 2-0. The Salthawks wanted to resume play, and that required a return trip to Derby on Wednesday.&nbsp;

The Panthers scratched across two runs in the bottom of the fourth after play resumed to tie the game up at two apiece.&nbsp;

Hutchinson (3-15) sophomore Carter Morgan led the fifth inning off with a walk, and then would steal second base. A few pitches later Morgan would be caught in a pickle between second and third. Morgan would draw a throw from Derby (12-8) pitcher Caden Riojas, after a few throws between Panther infielders, Morgan was still going back-and-forth between second and third base. An errant throw to third during the rundown would go out of play and score Morgan via the two-base error for the ball going out of play.

The run by Morgan would be the difference maker, as the Salthawks bullpen came through clutch in the final three innings. After Landon Parks got out of a jam in the fifth unscathed, where the Panthers had runners at second and third, Jack Davis came in relief to start the sixth.&nbsp;

Davis tossed two shutout innings in the sixth and seventh, retiring all six batters he faced. Derby, down to it's final out had Ryan Pierce at the plate with the bases empty. On a 3-2 pitch, Davis threw a fast ball on the outside corner that froze Pierce to end the game.

The Salthawks will host Salina Central on Thursday afternoon at Hobart-Detter Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. and will be available to <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/f25c32f1-dc1a-466d-96d4-9f7d9cb20d8e">watch and listen</a> on Hutch Post with Sean Boston.

TAMPA –&nbsp;For the second time in her career,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/sydney-mckinney/7236">Sydney McKinney</a>&nbsp;has been tabbed the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, it was announced Wednesday morning as part of the regular season awards. The American Athletic Conference regular season champions, Wichita State (43-9, 16-2) brings home Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/sami-hood/7246">Sami Hood</a>, Rookie of the Year&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/alex-aguilar/7249">Alex Aguilar</a>&nbsp;and Coaching Staff of the Year honors in 2023. McKinney is the third straight Shocker to take home the league's top honor and first player in conference history to win it multiple times. She finishes her career as a four-time First Team All-Conference selection – a first in school history. Wichita State placed four on the All-Conference First Team with McKinney (unanimous),&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/zoe-jones/7234">Zoe Jones</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/addison-barnard/7228">Addison Barnard</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/lauren-lucas/7235">Lauren Lucas</a>; and four more on the All-Conference Second Team with Aguilar,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/lauren-howell/7244">Lauren Howell</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/lainee-brown/7229">Lainee Brown</a>&nbsp;and Hood. For the season she is tops in the country in batting average (.527) and hits (97) and a top 10 finalist for USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year. Just a freshman, Hood becomes the second Shocker to earn American Defensive Player of the Year honors. A day one starter at second base, Hood has committed just five errors in 52 games. Aguilar, a unanimous pick for Rookie of the Year and the All-Rookie Team, joins teammate Barnard as the second Shocker to win American Rookie of the Year honors. Aguilar was a perfect 8-0 in league play with a 1.54 ERA in 50.0 innings. She tossed three complete game shutouts and posted a strikeout-walk ratio of 25-7. Head Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/coaches/kristi-bredbenner/1072">Kristi Bredbenner</a>, associate head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/coaches/elizabeth-economon/1074">Elizabeth Economon</a>&nbsp;and assistant coach&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/coaches/presley-bell/1073">Presley Bell</a>&nbsp;were voted Coaching Staff of the Year unanimously. The trio also won the award in 2021. Behind the leadership of the staff, Wichita State has put together one of the best seasons in school history. Barnard adds her third straight First Team All-Conference selection after an impressive stretch in 18 league games. Eight of her 14 home runs came in conference play, while hitting .429 with seven doubles and 27 runs scored. After picking up second team honors last season, Jones finds herself on the first team as a senior. Her 13 home runs and 53 RBI are second on the team and in the American. The Texas Tech transfer has enjoyed back-to-back breakout seasons since joining the Shockers a season ago. Lucas drove in 22 runs in conference play behind three triples and two home runs. For the season, Lucas ranks Top 10 nationally in RBI with 58 and triples with seven. Her .393 batting average and 15 doubles are also career highs. This is her second straight first team honor. Another Power 5 transfer that has shined at Wichita State is Howell. The Arkansas transfer has reinvented herself in 2023 behind a team-best 18-3 record in 122.0 innings. She has a 2.35 ERA behind 10 complete games and 81 strikeouts. The battery mate for Aguilar and Howell is Brown at catcher. Brown has started every game this season behind the plate and set career highs in batting average (.271), home runs (6) and RBI (21). Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/taylor-sedlacek/7248">Taylor Sedlacek</a>&nbsp;rounds out the award haul on the All-Rookie Team with Aguilar and Hood. Sedlacek is hitting .289 with five doubles, five home runs and 21 RBI in 48 starts. No. 20 Wichita State opens the American Athletic Conference Championship on Friday in the quarterfinals vs. the winner of Tulsa/Houston at 11 a.m. CT/12 p.m. ET on ESPNU. The American Athletic Conference regular season champions, Wichita State (43-9, 16-2) brings home Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/sami-hood/7246">Sami Hood</a>, Rookie of the Year&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/alex-aguilar/7249">Alex Aguilar</a>&nbsp;and Coaching Staff of the Year honors in 2023. McKinney is the third straight Shocker to take home the league's top honor and first player in conference history to win it multiple times. She finishes her career as a four-time First Team All-Conference selection – a first in school history. Wichita State placed four on the All-Conference First Team with McKinney (unanimous),&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/zoe-jones/7234">Zoe Jones</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/addison-barnard/7228">Addison Barnard</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/lauren-lucas/7235">Lauren Lucas</a>; and four more on the All-Conference Second Team with Aguilar,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/lauren-howell/7244">Lauren Howell</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/lainee-brown/7229">Lainee Brown</a>&nbsp;and Hood. In conference games only, McKinney led the American in batting average (.477), hits (31) and runs scored (30). For the season she is tops in the country in batting average (.527) and hits (97) and a top 10 finalist for USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year. Just a freshman, Hood becomes the second Shocker to earn American Defensive Player of the Year honors. A day one starter at second base, Hood has committed just five errors in 52 games. Aguilar, a unanimous pick for Rookie of the Year and the All-Rookie Team, joins teammate Barnard as the second Shocker to win American Rookie of the Year honors. Aguilar was a perfect 8-0 in league play with a 1.54 ERA in 50.0 innings. She tossed three complete game shutouts and posted a strikeout-walk ratio of 25-7. Head Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/coaches/kristi-bredbenner/1072">Kristi Bredbenner</a>, associate head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/coaches/elizabeth-economon/1074">Elizabeth Economon</a>&nbsp;and assistant coach&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/coaches/presley-bell/1073">Presley Bell</a>&nbsp;were voted Coaching Staff of the Year unanimously. The trio also won the award in 2021. Behind the leadership of the staff, Wichita State has put together one of the best seasons in school history. Barnard adds her third straight First Team All-Conference selection after an impressive stretch in 18 league games. Eight of her 14 home runs came in conference play, while hitting .429 with seven doubles and 27 runs scored. After picking up second team honors last season, Jones finds herself on the first team as a senior. Her 13 home runs and 53 RBI are second on the team and in the American. The Texas Tech transfer has enjoyed back-to-back breakout seasons since joining the Shockers a season ago. Lucas drove in 22 runs in conference play behind three triples and two home runs. For the season, Lucas ranks Top 10 nationally in RBI with 58 and triples with seven. Her .393 batting average and 15 doubles are also career highs. This is her second straight first team honor. Another Power 5 transfer that has shined at Wichita State is Howell. The Arkansas transfer has reinvented herself in 2023 behind a team-best 18-3 record in 122.0 innings. She has a 2.35 ERA behind 10 complete games and 81 strikeouts. The battery mate for Aguilar and Howell is Brown at catcher. Brown has started every game this season behind the plate and set career highs in batting average (.271), home runs (6) and RBI (21). The NFL announced today that the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs will play the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, November 5 at Frankfurt Stadium, home of Eintracht Frankfurt, for one of two 2023 NFL Germany Games.

🏈 Chiefs to play Dolphins in Frankfurt for 2023 Germany Game

HAVEN, Kan.&nbsp;— The Haven Wildcats baseball team was swept in it's regular season finale on Tuesday in a Central Kansas League showdown with the&nbsp; Pratt Greenbacks. The Wildcats fell in game one 2-0 in nine innings, before falling in the second game 1-0.&nbsp;

The Greenbacks plated both runs in the first game on a passed ball in the top of the ninth inning. Pratt struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to end the ballgame. The game was delayed for nearly 30 minutes in the fourth inning due to weather.

Haven ends the regular season with a 16-4 record. Pratt also ends the regular season 16-4 and will be the No. 2 seed in the 4A west regionals. The Greenbacks will host No. 15 Mulvane next week in the first round of regionals.

FRISCO, Texas—Brooks Lee and Patrick Winkle each had a pair of RBI and the Wichita Wind Surge defeated the Frisco RoughRiders 5-4 in the tenth inning to win the series opener.

The Surge snapped a season long four game losing streak and improve to 11-17 on the season.

In the tenth inning the designated runner Will Holland advanced to third on a fly-out to centerfield. Lee hit a slow roller to the right side of the infield to allow Holland to score and Wichita scored the winning run in the tenth without the benefit of a hit.

The Riders had a runner on third base with two outs in the bottom of the tenth and when the pitch got away from catcher, Winkle scrambled to get the loose ball and tossed it to pitcher Jordan Brink at the plate to get the bizarre final out of the game.

Brink earned the win in relief and Marc Church took the loss.

NOTES - Yoyner Fajardo eleven game hitting streak ended with no hits in his five at bats. The Surge improved to 5-1 in series openers.

All three hits from the Shockers (27-20) came courtesy of&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/chuck-ingram/7448">Chuck Ingram</a>, who got the scoring started in the first when he singled, stole second, moved to third on an error, and scored on a&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/garrett-pennington/7468">Garrett Pennington</a>&nbsp;sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead. The Wichita State offense was held in check the rest of the way by ORU starter Joshua Caravalho and relievers Dalton Patten (2-1), Jacob Widener and Cade Denton, who combined to strike out 10. The Golden Eagles (37-11) won their ninth straight game, tying the contest at 1-1 in the fourth then grabbing the lead for good with a pair of runs in the sixth. ⚾ Shockers dropped by No. 16 ORU

For the second-straight season, the Hutchinson Community College baseball team opens its postseason march in Fort Scott.

The 11th-seeded Blue Dragons (30-26) play the sixth-seeded Greyhounds (35-21) in the opening game of the best-of-3 Region VI Tournament Opening-Round series.

Game 1 of the series at Lions Field in Fort Scott is Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. Game will 2 on Thursday and Game 3, if necessary, on Friday. All games are scheduled for 1 p.m. All games will be streamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network.

Hutchinson enters the Region VI Tournament winning three games in a row after losing the series opener against Colby in extra innings last Thursday. The Dragons rallied from four runs down to defeat Colby 8-7 in the final game of the regular season on Saturday at Hobart-Detter Field.

The Blue Dragons finished tied for fifth in the Jayhawk Conference with an 18-14 record. The Dragons were one of six teams in the Jayhawk West with winning records within league play.

The Dragons bring a .298 team batting average into the series with Fort Scott. Averaging 7.37 runs per game. The Dragons hit 62 home runs this season, fifth-most in the KJCCC, but fourth most in the Jayhawk West.

Hutchinson has a team ERA of 6.09 and allows 6.29 runs per game.

Fort Scott is the top home-run hitting team in the league with 127 and owns the top-two home runners in the KJCCC this season. Sophomore Brody Szako has 25 home runs and Jaret Nelson has 21 homers.

Fort Scott had a 14-game winning streak heading into the final weekend of the regular season, but lost 3 of 4 to Cowley. The Greyhounds finished third in the Jayhawk East this season with a 19-13 record.

Hutchinson's&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/edmunson_will_rdcc">Will Edmunson</a>&nbsp;leads the Jayhawk with a .462 batting average. The sophomore right-fielder has 92 total hits with 11 home runs and 51 RBIs. Fort Scott's Szako is third in the KJCCC in hitting with a .442 batting average. He also leads the Jayhawk with 75 RBIs.

The Blue Dragons are 11-20 in road games this season. Fort Scott is 25-12 at Lions Field.

One year ago, the Blue Dragons went into Lions Field and swept Fort Scott in the opening-round series. Hutchinson won 10-7 and 10-2 to advance to the Plains District Championship in 2022. The Blue Dragons went 2-2 in the Plains District Tournament.

The Hutchinson-Fort Scott winner will play the Allen-Butler series winner at the Plains District Tournament, which begins Wednesday, May 17 at Eck Stadium in Wichita.

KANSAS CITY, Mo, (AP) — Andrew Vaughn’s two-run homer in the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Chicago White Sox to a 4-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Lucas Giolito picked up the win in a game that started two hours late because of rain. He allowed two runs on five hits over six innings. Kendall Graveman worked the ninth for his first save. Jordan Lyles threw a complete game, the first by a Royals pitcher in more than two years, allowing four runs on six hits with no walks. Lyles fell to 0-6 on the season.

CHICAGO (AP) — Paul DeJong, Nolan Gorman and Lars Nootbaar homered, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 6-4 for their third consecutive win. DeJong put St. Louis in front when he opened the ninth inning with a drive to left-center off Javier Assad for his third homer this season. Dylan Carlson then tripled and scored on Andrew Knizner’s bloop double into shallow right field. Chris Stratton got four outs for the win, and Giovanny Gallegos worked the ninth for his second save. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jurickson Profar had his first multihomer game in four years, Connor Seabold got his first major league win and the Colorado Rockies routed Pittsburgh 10-1 Tuesday night, sending the Pirates to their eighth loss in nine games. Profar hit a go-ahead solo homer on a slider from Luis Ortiz (0-1) in the second and followed Ryan McMahon’s two-run triple with a two-run drive off Duane Underwood Jr. that capped a five-run seventh and built a nine-run lead. Profar had his third career multihomer game and first since July 17, 2019, for Oakland against Seattle.

Much like the players themselves, the robo-umps are working their way up through the minors with the goal being promoted to the show. The goal is to eliminate the individual and sometimes inconsistent strike zones that vary from umpire to umpire, and with it the possibility that a game can turn on a bad ball/strike call. Disappearing with that are the complaints that an umpire’s strike zone was too wide or a pitcher was getting squeezed, followed by the helmet-slamming, dirt-kicking dustups that are practically as old as the sport itself.

DENVER (AP) — Nikola Jokic had a triple-double after making up with Suns owner Mat Ishbia and Michael Porter Jr. sank five 3-pointers to help the Denver Nuggets beat Phoenix 118-102 on Tuesday night for a 3-2 series lead. Joker had 29 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists for his 10th career playoff triple-double, breaking a tie with Wilt Chamberlain for most by a center in NBA history. Game 6 is Thursday night in Phoenix. The home team has won every game in the series. If that holds true again, the decisive winner-take-all clash will come Sunday back in Denver, where the top-seeded Nuggets own the NBA’s best home record at 39-7, including 5-0 in the playoffs.

It was the third straight game 30-point game of the series for Embiid, who also had seven rebounds and four blocks. Philadelphia will have chance to close out the series and advance to the conference finals when they host Game 6 on Thursday. Tyrese Maxey added 30 points and six 3s. James Harden finished with 17 points and 10 assists and eight rebounds. The 76ers led by as many as 21 in the fourth quarter. Jayson Tatum led Boston with 36 points but was just 11 of 27 from the field. Jaylen Brown finished with 24 points.

SEATTLE (AP) — Joe Pavelski scored his sixth goal of the series as part of a four-goal second period for Dallas, and the Stars routed the Seattle Kraken 6-3 on Tuesday night in Game 4 to even the Western Conference semifinal series. After a pair of tight games in Dallas to open the series, Games 3 and 4 in Seattle were blowouts. The Kraken rolled to a 7-2 win in Game 3 and the Stars responded with their best performance of the series in a dominant Game 4 victory. Game 5 is Thursday night in Dallas. Pavelski scored four goals in the series opener, added a fifth in Game 2 and gave the Stars a 4-0 lead midway through the second period of Game 4.

Last week, the Alabama baseball coach was fired after suspicious wagering activity was detected on a game involving the Crimson Tide. This week, both Iowa and Iowa State announced gambling investigations involving some of their athletes. Keith Whyte is executive director of the National Council on Problem Gambling. According to a statement released by the Georgia athletic association, the Bulldogs will not be able to attend a June 12 event with other college teams at the White House described by President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden as “College Athlete Day.” Georgia says it received the invitation on Wednesday.
