Johnson's four Big 12 Newcomer of the Week accolades are the most since&nbsp;Michael Beasley&nbsp;won a school-record eight such weekly honors during the 2007-08 season. Johnson averaged a near 20/10 double-double for the second time in a 3-week span, averaging 19.5 points on 41.7 percent (10-of-24) shooting, including 60 percent (3-of-5) from 3-point range, and 84.2 percent (16-of-19) from the free throw line, to go with 9.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals in 34.9 minutes per game. Yesterday, two games it was Cincinnati beating Buffalo 27 to 10 and the late game the San Francisco 49'ers beat the Cowboys 19 to 12, so it sets up the AFC and NFC Championship games this coming Sunday.

The first game will be San Francisco at Philadelphia, 2:00 on Fox and then Cincinnati and Kansas City at 5:30 on CBS. Our coverage of both games will begin at 1pm on the Westwood One Radio Network. As once the Chiefs make the AFC Championship game, we are no longer provided their audio from Mitch and company. 

NFL rules the fifth year in a row the Chiefs have made the AFC Championship game in the fifth year in a row that we're not able to provide their broadcast audio. 

Another Chiefs Kingdom show tonight with Mitch and the guys from 7 to 8 here on BW. Kansas City will be the first team in NFL history to host those five straight AFC championship games when they face the Bengals Sunday.

 Limited number of tickets for the matchup go on sale to the public at 11:00 today. Jackson County taxpayers will have a pre-sale opportunity to purchase single game AFC championship tickets from 8 to 9:30 am. Season ticket holders will have the opportunity at 10:00.

 HutchCC men's basketball team forced 27 Thunderbird turnovers and pulled away from a game that was tied with 50 seconds to go. To beat cloud 88-82. Hutchinson Men improved to 13 and 6 overall 7 and 6 in Jayhawk play.

 They'll next host Pratt at 7:30 Wednesday at the arena. As leading the way Aaron Franklin he had 19 Jayfon Garrison chipped in 18. Sophomore Ra'saun Frederick had 13 points.

 Sophomore Mia Williams became the sixth HutchCC women's basketball player to reach the 1,000 career point mark Sunday as the Dragons have won six straight.

 Williams scored a game high 23 to lead the Hutchinson women to a 75-66 win. They're now 16 and 4. Freshman Journey Armstead had 17 boards and 4 assists.

The Shockers get a win on the road in Dallas as they beat SMU. Jaquan Walton had 18 points. Wichita State moves to 10-9, 3 and 4 in conference play. 

James Rojas, the former Blue Dragon, a double double, 12 points, 10 rebounds. Congrats to him. 

KU looks to break a two game losing streak. They're on the road at Baylor. It doesn't get any easier. The Jayhawks have to figure out how to get scoring elsewhere other than Jalen Wilson. Game time 8:00 on ESPN. 

Well, it was the 21st time the Hutchinson Salt Hawks played in the Dodge City Tournament of Champions over their 80 year history. And when the dust settled Saturday night, Hutchinson outlasted Maize South, winning 67-56, and they won the tournament for only the third time in school history. The last two times happened back in the eighties, in 1982 and 1986. Hutchinson 11-0 travels to 8-3&nbsp; Derby for a game tomorrow. A stand alone game because the girls will be playing in a tournament coming up Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Later this week.&nbsp;&nbsp;

One problem for the Chiefs? They have to play the Bengals.

Cincinnati is on a 10-game winning streak after an impressive 27-10 road victory over the Buffalo Bills on a snow-covered field in Sunday's NFL divisional round. Joe Burrow threw for 242 yards and two touchdowns, while Joe Mixon ran for 105 yards and a TD.

In Sunday's nightcap, San Francisco held on to beat the Dallas Cowboys 19-12. Rookie Brock Purdy continued his improbable run leading the 49ers, throwing for 214 yards, playing mistake-free ball and leaning on the team's stellar defense.

That sets up the two conference championship games on Jan. 29: The Philadelphia Eagles will host the 49ers before the Chiefs host the Bengals. The winners will play in the Super Bowl on Feb. 12.

The Bengals haven't lost since Halloween and are trying to make it back to the Super Bowl for a second straight year. The Chiefs will be playing in their fifth straight AFC championship game.

The AFC title game would have been played in Atlanta next weekend if the Bills had beaten the Bengals, under a rule adjustment approved by NFL owners. The league decided on the first of its kind conference championship neutral site setting because the Bills (13-3) finished the season a half-game behind the Chiefs (14-3) after their game at Cincinnati was canceled on Jan. 2 when Bills safety Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated on the field.

Hamlin has since been making a remarkable recovery and attended Sunday's game in Buffalo, waving to fans from a stadium suite.

In the end, all the Atlanta hypotheticals weren't needed. That's because the Bengals and Burrow are rolling.

"Better send those refunds," Burrow said, referring to the 50,000 or so tickets already sold for a game that will never be played.

In Saturday's games, quarterback Patrick Mahomes — with an assist from backup quarterback Chad Henne — helped the Chiefs beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-20. Later in the day, the Eagles cruised past the New York Giants 38-7.

The Chiefs and Eagles didn't have to play during last weekend's wild-card round because the top-seeded team in each conference received a bye to the divisional round.

The Chiefs did have some nervous moments against the Jags, particularly after Mahomes limped off the field with a sprained ankle in the second quarter. Henne, a 37-year-old backup, filled in admirably while the former MVP was out and threw a touchdown pass to push the Chiefs ahead 17-7.

Mahomes returned in the second half and did enough to lead the Chiefs to the win. He completed 22 of 30 passes for 195 yard and two touchdowns with no interceptions. His health status will be a closely watched storyline during the upcoming days.

The Eagles had no problem rolling over the Giants, jumping to a 28-0 lead by halftime. Philadelphia had more touchdowns (four) in the first half than New York had first downs (three).

The relatively drama-free weekend was much different than last week's wild-card round, when no lead was safe.

The Bills blew a 17-point advantage before recovering to beat Miami. That narrow escape came less than 24 hours after the Jaguars overcame a 27-point deficit against the Los Angeles Chargers in one of the most stunning rallies in playoff history.

Multiple games were decided in the final minutes. The Bengals beat the Ravens 24-17 after Sam Hubbard returned Baltimore quarterback Tyler Huntley's fumble 98 yards for a tiebreaking touchdown in the fourth quarter, a surprising turn of events after the Ravens were poised to take the lead.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The experience is evident in the salt that peppers the beard of Chiefs quarterback Chad Henne.

The 37-year-old journeyman has hung around the league for nearly 15 years, his days as a starter in Miami and Jacksonville long distant memories. For the past five years, Henne has been little more than a backup quarterback for Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City, his job to hold clipboards and provide encouragement more so than to throw any passes.

It would've been easy to grow complacent over all that time. Yet the consummate professional has learned to be ready for anything, and anything happened in the first half of Saturday night's playoff game against the Jaguars.

Pressed into service when Mahomes hurt his right ankle, Henne responded by leading the Chiefs on a 98-yard touchdown drive, which not only kept Jacksonville from seizing control but eventually provided the winning margin in a 27-20 victory that advanced Kansas City to its fifth consecutive AFC championship game.

“Definitely, nerves are high,” Henne said afterward, “but once you get in the game and get going, it's just like, repetition. It's not like I've never done it before. I played in enough games. When the opportunity is called upon, I'm ready.”

Mahomes returned after halftime and finished things out, and he intends to start next week's AFC title game. But Henne proved once more the importance of a capable backup quarterback, an often-thankless job typically filled by failed starters, players long past their prime or young prospects not yet ready to take over a team.

Henne fits that mold, and there he was, watching from the sideline amid sleet and snow Saturday night as Mahomes was dragged to the turf by Jaguars pass rusher Arden Key, whose full body weight landed on the MVP candidate's ankle.

Mahomes slowly stood up, barely able to put pressure on it, as a nervous hush descended over Arrowhead Stadium. He gutted out three more plays to finish the first quarter, then two more to set up a field goal, before Chiefs coach Andy Reid cornered him on the sideline and gave his star an ultimatum.

“I thought I could play through it,” Mahomes said, “and he said, ‘I’m not putting you back in so you might as well go get the X-ray, and then if it's negative or whatever, I'll put you back in.”

So, throwing his winter coat to the ground in frustration, Mahomes headed up the tunnel to the Kansas City locker room.

Henne traded his baseball cap for a football helmet and headed onto the field.

The Jaguars didn't do him any favors, backing the Chiefs up to their own 2 with a punt. But the confidence that Reid and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy had in him was evident by their first play call: a pass play from his own end zone.

Henne completed it to Travis Kelce, one of 14 on his night. Then he hit Kadarius Toney later in the drive, and found Kelce twice more, on one of them getting crushed late by Key and drawing a personal foul penalty.

On the 12th and final play of the drive, Henne hit the All-Pro tight end one last time for the touchdown.

“To come in a hostile game, backed up to your 2, go 98 yards,” Kelce said, “that just shows the type of competitor he is.”

It wasn't the first time Henne has saved a season. In another divisional game two years ago, when Mahomes was forced into the concussion protocol, he guided the Chiefs through the final two quarters to a 22-17 win over the Browns.

“It's not a one-man show,” Henne said. “There's a lot of great guys on our offense that really stepped up and helped me.”

Kelce topped the list. But Isiah Pacheco, a seventh-round draft pick, had the bulk of his 95 yards rushing on Henne's drive, and his offensive line largely kept one of the league's best defenses from laying a finger on him.

Perhaps they were inspired by Henne. Or put at easy by the fact that he was cracking jokes in the huddle.

“I don't know if it was the jokes," he said. "It was looking the guys in the eye, exemplifying some of the words in the offense that we do, and just really getting their attention and knowing that you believe in them as well as them believing in me.”

Sports Headlines for Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —Cloud County (12-8, 8-6) looked poised for the season sweep of Hutchinson (14-6, 8-6) after besting the Dragons by 15 in November and jumping out to an 8-0 lead Sunday.

Things quickly changed after back-to-back Aaron Franklin trays sparked a 23-10 run.

The Dragons built a 10-point lead headed into the break after the Dragons made 8 of 20 three-pointers. The Thunderbirds, meanwhile, went 0-5 from distance in the first half and finished the game just 1 of 9.

Three Dragons scored in double figures, led by Franklin's 19.

Jayden Garrison scored 18 and and Ra'Sean Frederick added 14.

Corey Sawyer led the way for Cloud County with 26 points on 6 of 8 shooting. The bulk of his damage was done from the free throw line, where he hit 14 of 17.

Cheikh Sow's And-1 with 2:18 remaining deadlocked the game at 80 after Hutchinson led by as many as 13 in the contest.

Hutchinson went up 84-82 with 39 seconds left after an offensive rebound led to a Garrison baseline jumper.

Hutchinson held defensively and put the game on ice at the free throw line.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Mya Williams became just the sixth Blue Dragon in program history to score 1,000 points as Hutchinson avenged its first loss of the season.

The Dragons started the season 7-0 before the Thunderbirds beat them in Concordia 75-65 in November.

Williams' free throw with 3:28 left in the third quarter was part of a 15-4 run that put Hutchinson up 54-38.

Williams is on pace to break the per-game scoring average by two points (currently averaging 18.5 per contest).

Williams joins Kalani Purcell (1,176), Jamie Patrick (1,098), Heather Robben (1,072), Cian Carvalho (1,034) and Tor'e Alford (1,032) as the only players in program history to score 1,000 points or more.

Williams finished with 23 points and six rebounds on 5 of 14 shooting. She hit 11 of 12 free throws.

Journey Armstead (17) and Kali Howard (13) also scored in double digits.

Point guard Morgan Browning finished with nine points and four steals.

Armstead added seven boards and four assists to her statline.

The Thunderbirds (12-8, 7-7) got 15 points from Sarah Lawless. She finished the game 7 of 10 from the floor, 1 of 3 from distance.

Because of Saturday's snowstorm that affected most of the state of Kansas, the Hutchinson Community College women's and men's basketball games agaisnt Cloud County at the Hutchisnon Sports Arena are postponed.

The Blue Dragons and Thunderbirds will now play on Sunday at the Sports Arena. The Women's game will tip off at 2 p.m. and the Men's game is scheduled to tip off at 4 p.m.

The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team returns to the Sports Arena Sunday looking to even the season series with the Cloud County Thunderbirds.

The Blue Dragons (15-4, 9-4 KJCCC) and the Thunderbirds (12-7, 7-6) will tip off at 2 p.m. at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The game will be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network and broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 1:45 p.m.

Hutchinson started the season with seven-straight wins and was ranked No. 4 in the NJCAA Rankings. That all changed on November 19 when Cloud County administered the first loss of the season to the Blue Dragons, defeating Hutchinson 75-65 in Concordia. That loss was the start of a 3-4 stretch for the Dragons that sent them tumbling out of the national rankings.

The Blue Dragons have righted the ship since then, reeling off five-consecutive victories. The Dragons played one of their most complete games of the season on Wednesday in an 82-58 victory at Independence.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/williams_mya_wx3b">Mya Williams</a>&nbsp;scored a game-high 28 points for the second-straight game. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/duffy_monae_4kqq">Monae Duffy</a>&nbsp;posted her second-straight double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Blue Dragons limited Independence to 28.1 percent shooting and forcing 22 turnovers.

Cloud County was stunned by Northwest Tech its last time out on Thursday. The Thunderbirds shot a frigid 26 percent from the field and was 0 of 12 from 3-point range in a 52-47 loss to the Mavericks. Alize Ruiz had 13 points and 16 rebounds to lead Cloud County on Thursday.

Ruiz was part of a lethal 1-2 punch for Cloud County in its victory over Hutchinson on November 19 Ruiz had 20 points and nine rebounds, while Maimouna Sissoko had 22 points and 11 rebounds to pace Cloud County past the Dragons. The Thunderbirds shot 45.0 percent, while holding Hutchinson to 37.7 percent from the floor. Duffy had 15 points and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/armstead_journey_v4yx">Journey Armstead</a>&nbsp;had 14 to lead the Dragons.

Williams is nearing a milestone for the Dragons. She is just 14 points shy of becoming the sixth Blue Dragon in history to score 1,000 career points.

DODGE CITY, Kan.-It was the 21st time that the Hutchinson Salthawks had played in this prestigious basketball tournament over it's 80 year history. Touted as the longest continuous running basketball tournament west of the Mississippi, the 80th edition final day did not disappoint as the Hutchinson Salthawks outlasted the Maize South Mavericks 67 to 56 in the Championship game on Saturday night at the United Wireless Arena in Dodge City.

Hutchinson had only won this tournament two other times an that was back in the 1980's when Dan Justice brought back Championship wins to the Salt City by winning the crown in 1982 and again in 1986, plus Hutch was 3rd in 1984. Coach Phil Anderson's 2002 team was close but ended up getting edged by Wichita East 57 to 55. 

But this Salthawk team is special. Going into this game, playing a team that they had just played and beat two weeks earlier, they knew Maize South would be a challenge. But this Salthawk team just finds a way to win.

Hutch trailed early in the contest 3-0 after a Michael Kates 3 pointer from the right wing, but the Salthawks sharp shooting senior guard Garrett Robertson answered with 1 of his 4 first half long range bombs to tie it up and Hutch never looked back. The Salthawks got a lift right at the end of the first quarter when Terrell King was able to score on a lay up just as time expired to give Hutch a 17 to 14 lead at the end of the first half.

The Salthawks extended the lead to 30 to 26 at the half. The saw each team score 3 field goal apiece with Hutch going &nbsp;6 of 8 from the line and the Mavericks shooting 5 of 8 gave the Salthawks a slight 5 point lead at 42-37 lead.

Maize South turned up the pressure in the fourth quarter putting the Salthawks at the line on numerous occasions, but Terrell King, Wade Meyer, Dauntay King and Nic Lange came through shooting 13 of 16 combined plus 4 field goals to come away 67 to 56 winners.

Hutch was led by Garrett Robertson led the scoring with 19 points and Terrell King scored 17 points. Wade Meyer scored 12 points including going 8 for 8 from the line. Nic Lange had 10 second half points, Julian Smith had 3 points while Dauntay King added 5 points and Devon Spiller added a key 4th quarter lay up for his only 2 points.

Maize South was paced by Jaylen Maeze's 23 points with 14 of 18 free throws. Michael Kates had 20 points, Tatem Steinhoff 7, Tory Homan 6 and Isaiah Atwater was held to 2 points in the loss.

Things got interesting in the 4th quarter after Garrett Robertson fouled out on a technical foul, but Lange and Terrell King picked up the load in the 4th quarter to give Hutchinson the Championship.

Saturday's appearance in the Championship Game was only Hutchinson's 5th appearance since the Salthawks started attending the TOC in 1957. Hutchinson now has 3 Championship trophy's from the TOC &nbsp;and this one was special.

Hutchinson (11-0) now travels to Derby (8-3) who placed 4th in the TOC losing to Junction City 65-59. That game will be at Derby at 7:30pm next Tuesday.

Maize South (9-2) hosts Goddard on Tuesday.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — This time, Markquis Nowell led the way for No. 13 Kansas State.

Nowell had 23 points, eight rebounds and five assists, and Kansas State beat Texas Tech 68-58 on Saturday.

The Wildcats posted a dramatic 83-82 overtime win against No. 2 Kansas on Tuesday. But Nowell had just four points on 2-for-8 shooting against the Jayhawks.

“I just try to come out and be aggressive ... just play my game,” Nowell said. “And when I did that, you know, shots was falling.”

Keyontae Johnson had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats (17-2, 6-1 Big 12), who won for the 11th time in 12 games. Ismael Massoud scored 12 points.

“It’s coming easy when you play with people like Markquis and Keyontae,” Massoud said.

Kansas State trailed 33-28 at halftime. But the Wildcats used a 13-2 run to take a 50-47 lead with 9:26 remaining.

After Pop Isaacs hit a tying 3-pointer for Texas Tech, Kansas State went ahead to stay with a 10-0 spurt. Johnson capped the decisive stretch with two foul shots that made it 60-50 with 2:57 to go.

“We needed him,” Kansas State coach Jerome Tang said of Johnson. “We told him, ‘Hey you need to be more aggressive,’ ... because him taking a tough shot is sometimes better than somebody taking an open shot.”

“That’s what big teams do,” Texas Tech coach Mark Adams said. “Credit goes to those guys. ... They executed really well.”

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Shahada Wells scored 17 points as No. 14 TCU beat No. 2 Kansas 83-60 on Saturday in one of the worst losses in Bill Self’s 20-year coaching career with the Jayhawks.

It was Kansas’ second-largest loss at home under Self. The Jayhawks fell 84-59 to Texas on Jan. 2, 2021.

The loss snapped a 16-game winning streak at home for Kansas. The Jayhawks (15-3, 5-2 Big 12), who lost 83-82 in overtime at Kansas State on Tuesday, had not lost consecutive games in the state since 1989, when it had home losses on Jan. 28 to K-State and on Feb. 1 to Missouri.

Kansas trailed by 10 at halftime and never closed the gap within single digits. TCU extended the lead to as many as 24 points. The Jayhawks shot only 32.1% in the second half.

TCU (15-4, 4-3 Big 12), which shot 54.4% (31 of 57) from the field, got 15 points from Mike Miles Jr. and 11 from Damion Baugh.

Jalen Wilson led Kansas with 30 points. He was coming off a career-high 38 on Tuesday against K-State. Kevin McCullar with 10 points was the only other Jayhawk in double figures.

TCU’s Eddie Lampkin was hobbled with a left ankle injury suffered late in the first half. An erroneous tweet at halftime said he had a ruptured Achilles but a school spokesman later said it was a high ankle sprain. He returned and finished with 8 points and 4 rebounds.

TCU used a 19-0 run early in the first half to open a 33-13 lead, forcing Self to use three of his four timeouts in the first 9:10 of the half. The Horned Frogs hit 13 of their first 15 shots. They finished the half shooting 58.6% (17 of 29).

Kansas trailed by as many as 22 points (37-15) before going on an 11-0 run. The Frogs led 48-38 at halftime, the closest Kansas had been since early in the big TCU run.

Patrick Mahomes remains good at football even on one ankle. Mahomes hurt his ankle in the first half, but returned to lead the Kansas City Chiefs past the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-20 on Saturday in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs. The Philadelphia Eagles cruised past the New York Giants 38-7 a few hours later. There will be two more games Sunday. Buffalo hosts Cincinnati in the afternoon while Dallas is at San Francisco at night. The Chiefs and Eagles didn’t have to play during last weekend’s wild-card round because the top-seeded team in each conference received a bye to the divisional round.

Even on one ankle, Patrick Mahomes remains good at football.

There will be two more games Sunday with Buffalo hosting Cincinnati and San Francisco hosting Dallas.

The Chiefs and Eagles didn’t have to play during last weekend's wild-card round because the top-seeded team in each conference received a bye to the divisional round.

The Chiefs did have some nervous moments against the Jags, particularly after Mahomes limped off the field with an ankle injury in the second quarter. Henne, a 37-year-old backup, filled in admirably while the former MVP was out and threw a touchdown pass to push the Chiefs ahead 17-7.

Mahomes returned in the second half and did enough to lead the Chiefs to the win. He completed 22 of 30 passes for 195 yard and two touchdowns with no interceptions.

Saturday's relatively drama-free day of football was much different than last weekend's wild-card round, when no lead was safe.

Multiple games were decided in the final minutes. The Bengals beat the Ravens 24-17 after Sam Hubbard returned Baltimore quarterback Tyler Huntley’s fumble 98 yards for a tiebreaking touchdown in the fourth quarter, a surprising turn of events after the Ravens were poised to take the lead.
