HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For the first four minutes Wednesday night, the Dragons (14-7, 8-7) could do no wrong.

Behind three Jayden Garrison treys (one from nearly 35 feet away), Hutchinson quickly built a 19-6 advantage on the visiting Pratt Beavers (12-8, 9-6).

The Beavers chipped away at that lead as the Dragons took a narrow 57-56 advantage into the locker room.

The first half featured zero ties and zero lead changes.

After 45 minutes of play, the Dragons and Beavers were tied 11 times in a game that featured five lead changes.

With 3:25 to play in regulation, Hutchinson fell behind 105-96. Nearly 1:35 later, Garrison fouled out of the contest with 16 points on 6 of 15 shooting. With less than two minutes remaining, the Dragons still trailed 106-103.

Up 109-106 with 36.6 seconds remaining and eight seconds to shoot, Pratt took its last timeout. The ensuing baseline inbound resulted in a Quintin Metcalf bunny that rolled off the front iron.

Hutchinson rushed to the other end of the court for a quick basket.

With 7.4 seconds remaining, Pratt sent Sage Koelsch into the game for his only possession of the contest. Down 109-108, the Dragons applied full-court pressure, but allowed Koelsch to split the middle of the defense.

He went to the line for bonus free throws. He hit both, but not without some drama. His first free throw hit the iron and caromed high above the rim before glancing off the backboard and back down through the hoop.

His second free throw was pure. Hutchinson had 7.4 seconds left to go the length of the court without timeouts and down 111-108.

Ra'Sean Frederick dribbled up the floor and found Kieran Carr on the wing for three. His shot tickled the twine with 0.4 remaining.

Pratt tried a desperation heave at the buzzer, but the game was headed into overtime deadlocked at 111 — or was it?

Frederick rushed to halfcourt at the regulation buzzer to bark at the Beaver bench. He was immediately assessed a Class A technical foul.

The game was still headed into overtime, but Qai Kellman got to shoot two free throws before the final five-minute frame.

Kellman hit both and Pratt went into OT with a 113-111 advantage.

Frederick finished with a double-double, 33 points and 11 rebounds. He hit 3 of 7 three-pointers, perhaps none bigger than the trey that knotted the game at 119 with 1:50 left in OT.

End-of-regulation hero Kieran Carr fouled out with 41.9 seconds left on a charge to the basket. He finished with 13 points.

Over the next 34 seconds, Pratt went up 128-123.

An Aaron Franklin three pulled the Dragons within 128-126 with four seconds left.

Franklin notched a double-double with 38 points and 14 rebounds.

The Dragons outrebounded the Beavers 51-37, but Pratt scored 78 points in the paint.

The Dragons made good on just 20 of 32 free throw opportunities (62.5%). Meanwhile, Pratt made 30 of 42 tries (71.4%).

Pratt shot 69.1% from the field, including 6 of 10 from distance.

The Dragons shot 45-103 (43.7%) and hit 16 of 46 (34.8%) from three-point land.

The Dragons were forced to foul Sterling Young with two seconds left. He hit both free throws to ice the game.

The win marked Pratt's first in the Sports Arena since 2007.

Six Beavers scored in double figures, led by Quintin Metcalf and Sterling Young (28 points each).

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas men’s basketball signee Elmarko Jackson has been named a 2023 McDonald’s All-American and will participate in the McDonald’s All-American game on March 28 at the Toyota Center in Houston.

Only 24 players among the more than 700 nominated were selected as 2023 McDonald’s All-Americans. Jackson gives Kansas 50 total signees who have earned the honor, starting with Darnell Valentine in 1977. Current Jayhawks Gradey Dick, MJ Rice and Ernest Udeh Jr. were named McDonald’s All-American last season.

A 6-foot-3 guard from Marlton, New Jersey, Jackson is nationally ranked No. 22 by ESPN.com, No. 23 by 247Sports.com and No. 27 by Rivals.com. Jackson is playing his final prep season at South Kent School in Connecticut. Jackson is averaging 19.0 points and 6.0 assists for South Kent which is currently 18-3 overall and 8-0 in NEPSAC AAA conference play.

Jackson began his prep career at St. Augustine Prep in Richland, New Jersey. He then transferred to Academy of the New Church in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania, where he earned all-state and all-league honors in 2021-22.

Earlier this season, Jackson was named to the Naismith Boys High School Player of the Year Watch List, which highlights just 50 players nationwide.

NEW YORK — Finalists for eight of the Associated Press' 2022 NFL awards, including the five players in contention for MVP, were revealed Wednesday on NFL Network's Good Morning Football. The list includes Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes joins other finalists Justin Jefferson and Jalen Hurts; those three are also finalists for the NFL’s AP Offensive Player of the Year award. Mahomes last won MVP in 2019.

The winners will be announced at NFL Honors on Feb. 9. A nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league completed voting before the start of the playoffs.

The Waxahachie, Texas, product was named the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Wednesday.

Williams became just the sixth Blue Dragon player in program history to score 1,000 career points, reaching that milestone on Sunday in a 23-point effort against Cloud County.

Williams had games of 28 points in a road win against Independence and 23 against the Thunderbirds. She also averaged 4.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 4.5 steals last week. Her career-high six steals also came in the Cloud County game.

Williams is the fourth-leading scorer in the KJCCC at 18.0 points per game. She is No. 3 in the KJCCC in free-throw shooting at 84.1 percent and her 49 3-pointers are tied for fourth in the KJCCC.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.:&nbsp;(Transcript from KWBW Sports)&nbsp;7:10 am on BW Radio, time to turn to sports.&nbsp;&nbsp;A lot of it will start with high school basketball. Hutchinson High School, a standalone game last night, in Derby came from behind to win 55-50. Wade Meyer hit his only basket of the game, a three pointer to give Hutchinson a 48-47 lead with 2:18 to play.

It was free throws, basically the rest of the way as the Salt Hawks hold on to push their record to 12 and 0. 

Duantay King had a career high 24 points to lead the #2 ranked team in 5A Hutchinson to that victory.

Derby High School's Addison Brown has been named to the McDonald's All-America basketball team, just one of 24 players in the nation named to that squad. The All-America game will be played in Houston March 28.

 #12 Iowa State holds on to beat #5 K-State 80-76. What a game in Ames. Marquese Noel led K-State with 23 points. They now dropped to 17 and 3, 6 and 2 in the Big 12. That conference is just loaded with talent. 

The NJCAA has announced details for the 2023 NJCAA Division 1 Men's and Women's Basketball Championship Finals. Both national championship contests will be nationally televised for the first time on ESPNU as part of a multiyear meteorites agreement with ESPN. The D1 Men's Championship here in Hutchinson will be Saturday, March 25th at one. The women's Championship final will be on Monday, March 27th at 7:00. 

Hutchinson sophomore guard Jaiden Garrison named the Jayhawk Conference D1 Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Tuesday. The Sophomore from Little River averaged 16 and a half points, shot 48% from the floor in wins over Indy and Cloud. 

Mya Williams of the women was named the Jayhawk Women's Basketball Player of the Week yesterday, as well as Williams had games of 28 in a road win against Independance and 23 against Cloud County. 

Jason O'Toole, athletic director at Cowley College and long time employee there, has resigned effective February 28. O'Toole declining to comment on his resignation when reached by the phone by several sources at Cowley College.

 Sophomore Demitri Brown broke a meet record on Saturday and posted the fourth best indoor long jump in Blue Dragon Men's Track and Field History. For that he has been named the Jayhawk Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week. 

And finally the Royals announcing that they have acquired left handed pitcher Josh Taylor from Boston for infielder Alberto Mandisa and a player to be named later. Taylor, who will be 30 on March 2nd, missed the 2022 season with a back injury and three seasons in the majors with Boston from 2019 to 2021 pitched to a 3.69 era, pitched in six of Boston's 11 postseason games and was very impressive with an era in the low twos. He has held left handed batters over his career to a .174 average. Mondesi, 27, was maybe the most injured Royals player in the history of that franchise. Never could stay on the field and the Royals have unloaded him.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Head coach Lance Leipold announced the addition of 13 newcomers to the Kansas football roster today. All 13 student-athletes are on campus and enrolled at Kansas for the 2023 spring semester.

Among Kansas’ newcomers, 12 come from Division I programs. Combined, they have played in 250 career games prior to coming to Kansas.

The Jayhawks added six pieces to the defensive side of the ball, including defensive end Austin Booker (Minnesota), linebacker JB Brown (Bowling Green), defensive end Patrick Joyner Jr. (Utah State), defensive tackle Gage Keys (Minnesota) cornerback Damarius McGhee (LSU) and defensive tackle Devin Phillips (Colorado State).

On the offensive side of the ball, Kansas added offensive lineman Logan Brown (Wisconsin), running back Dylan McDuffie (Georgia Tech) offensive lineman Spencer Lovell (Cal), offensive lineman Hunter Barlow (Hutchinson CC) and tight end Max Muehlberger (Oklahoma State). The Jayhawks also added two specialists in Seth Keller (Texas State) and Charlie Weinrich (Nebraska).

This newest group of Jayhawks join the 2023 recruiting class announced in December and are enrolled at Kansas for the 2023 spring semester. Freshmen Calvin Clements, Surahz Buncom, Jaden Hamm and Tony Terry are also enrolled for the 2023 spring semester.

Both national championship contests will be nationally televised for the first time on ESPNU as part of a multi-year media rights agreement with ESPN. The DI Men's Championship will be played on Saturday, March 25 at 2:00 PM ET / 1:00 PM CT. The DI Women's Championship final will be on Monday, March 27 at 8:00 PM ET / 7:00 PM CT.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Division I Men's Basketball Championship will begin Monday, March 20 in Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; This year's national tournament marks the 75th anniversary of the tournament being played inside the&nbsp;historic Hutchinson Sports Arena.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Division I Women's Basketball Championship tips off on Wednesday, March 22, and will be played at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, TX, for the eighth consecutive year.
