WICHITA, Kan. — The Wichita Wizards (1-0) used a late run to build a double-digit lead and hold off the Kansas City Stealth (0-1).&nbsp;

The Wizards have been in Wichita (home games at Friends University) since 2019 but opened the 2023 season in a new league — the MABA (Mid-America Basketball Association).

"The game was a great effort by both teams. It was close all the way, but our guys don’t quit and finished strong," Mark Creed, Wizards CEO and founder of the new MABA league, said. "It was a great game to start something that we hope to grow to be an amazing league."

The Wizards were led by Parker Austin's 31 points and 10 rebounds.&nbsp;

Austin shot 13-of-20 from the floor in the 115-106 win.&nbsp;

The Wizards trailed for the first three quarters before taking over in the final frame.&nbsp;

Kaelon Gary added 26 points to Wichita's tally on 10-of-11 free-throw shooting.&nbsp;

Curtis Profit Jr. scored 16 and added six steals, four assists and five rebounds.&nbsp;

The Stealth (formerly of Topeka) join the Wizards as founding members of the MABA.

The Wizards return to Friends University April 16 at 2 p.m. to face the OKC Lightning.

🏀 Wizards sneak by Stealth

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) —&nbsp;Sonny Gray and four relievers combined on a four-hitter, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 2-0 on Saturday to open with consecutive shutouts for the first time in franchise history.

Jose Miranda had an early RBI single, and pinch-hitter Kyle Farmer added a sacrifice fly. Byron Buxton scored twice.

Gray (1-0) allowed three hits and had a strikeout and four walks, all of which came in full-count situations. Jorge Alcalá, Griffin Jax, Caleb Thielbar and Jorge López also held the Royals scoreless. Thielbar struck out three, and López got his first save of the year.

The Twins and original Washington Senators had never opened with consecutive shutouts.

“How can you not be pleased with not giving up any runs, pitching and defense?" Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “I couldn’t be happier with all the guys we’ve brought into the game and how they have been pitching. Combine that with the plays the guys are making behind them and it has looked good.”

Kansas City is 0 for 14 with runners in scoring position in its first two games.

Miranda singled to center in the first to score Buxton. Farmer came on as a pinch hitter in the sixth and hit a sacrifice fly to center, also scoring Buxton.

Christian Vázquez went 2 for 3 with a pair of singles. Buxton also had two hits.

“It is incredible watching him play and seeing what he does,” Farmer said.

In his Royals debut, Jordan Lyles (0-1) threw 5 1/3 innings and gave up two runs — one earned — on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

“His stuff was good and pace was good,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. "I thought he had some good curveballs below the bats and overall you couldn’t ask for much more.”

Salvador Perez had a double in the fifth and a single in the eighth. The Royals left eight men on base with four hits.

“We got some opportunities today, but it’s part of the game," Perez said.

Franmil Reyes became the first Royals batter called for a timer violation, during the start of his at-bat with the bases loaded in the third inning. He struck out.

RHP Joe Ryan will start the series finale for Minnesota. RHP Brad Keller will counter for Kansas City.

LOUIS (AP) — Jack Flaherty survived a career-high seven walks and a hit batter in throwing five no-hit innings, and the St. Louis Cardinals scored three unearned runs in the third on their way to a 4-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays for their first win this season. Flaherty, bothered by shoulder issues that sidelined him most of last season, had only one clean inning but it was his final one. Facing the Blue Jays for the first time in his career, he fanned four. Toronto had three hits after getting 16 singles among an opening day, club record 19 hits.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — JXander Bogaerts hit a two-run homer and Matt Carpenter added a two-run double to back fellow newcomer Michael Wacha and lead the Padres to their first victory this season, 8-4 against the Colorado Rockies on Saturday. The Padres lost consecutive games to the Rockies before playing up to the high expectations they have after making a run to the NL Championship Series last season and then signing Bogaerts to a $280 million, 11-year deal.

Abbey Hsu led the Lions with 19 points and Kaitlyn Davis scored 13. Hsu finished the season with 606 points, two shy of the program record set by Camille Zimmerman in 2016-17. Columbia won a program-record 28 games this season, three more than its previous best set when the Lions went 25-7 last season.

HOUSTON (AP) — UConn doled out another drama-free basketball beatdown, getting 21 points and 10 rebounds from Adama Sanogo to dispatch Miami 72-59 and move one win from the school’s fifth national title. Jordan Hawkins overcame his stomach bug and scored 13 for the Huskies, who came into this most unexpected Final Four as the only team with any experience on college basketball’s final weekend. In the title game, the Huskies will face San Diego State, which became the first team to hit a buzzer beater while trailing in a Final Four game for a 72-71 victory over Florida Atlantic.

HOUSTON (AP) — Lamont Butler made a jumper at the buzzer, sending San Diego State to its first national championship game with a 72-71 win over fellow mid-major Florida Atlantic in the Final Four. With FAU leading by three, San Diego State’s Jaedon LeDee hit a short jumper to cut it to 71-70. After FAU’s Johnell Davis missed a contested layup, the Aztecs didn’t call timeout and got the ball to Butler. He worked the clock down and before hitting the shot that sent the Aztecs racing out onto the floor. San Diego State will face UConn in Monday’s championship game.

DALLAS (AP) — Caitlin Clark's 100th career game at Iowa will come in the national championship game. The Hawkeyes will be looking for their first title when they take on LSU on Sunday. She will be back next season. As a 21-year-old junior, she's not eligible for the WNBA draft.

Shaka Smart was voted the AP men's basketball coach of the year after leading Marquette to regular-season and Big East Tournament titles. He received 24 of 58 votes from a national panel to beat out Kansas State coach Jerome Tang, who had 13 votes, and Kelvin Sampson of Houston, who received 10. The voting began with the conclusion of the regular season and closed before the start of the NCAA Tournament. The Golden Eagles were a No. 2 seed and lost in the second round to Michigan State. Smart is the second Marquette coach to win AP coach of the year after Al McGuire in 1971.

Sports Headlines for Sunday

We see him on the sidelines at Purdue games with his funny reactions that instantly turn to gifs. We know how legendary the former coach is and I think we all wanted him to be recognized for what he did for not just our program, but basketball in general. We are naturally an instant gratification species, it’s natural to want things right away. But sometimes the best things in life are worth waiting for and Gene Keady is finally getting something I’m sure he has waited years for. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced today that Keady will be inducted into the class of 2023 during the Final Four in Houston.

The former Purdue coach is one of the best in college basketball history. He won National Coach of the year six times and is the most successful coach in Purdue history garnering 512 wins. He won 6 of the 25 Big Ten Titles and holds the record for most Big Ten Coach of the Year awards with seven.

He took the Boilers to the NCAA tournament 17 times in his 25 years as head coach including 5 Sweet 16s and 2 elite eights.

Keady originally from Kansas was born on May 21, 1936. He attended Larned High School before attending junior college at Garden City. He was an All-American in football playing quarterback and then went on to Kansas State where he played football, baseball, track. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences and Physical Education.

He made a number of stints at schools before landing at Purdue in 1980 including Hutchinson Junior College (65-74), Arkansas (75-78), and Western Kentucky (78-80). After retiring from Purdue he was an assistant coach for the Toronto Raptors for a year but left when his late wife Patricia fell ill.

His basketball knowledge and coaching expertise extends to a vast tree with some notable coaches including Bruce Weber, Kevin Stallings, Steve Lavin, Matt Painter, Cuonzo Martin and Paul Lusk.

Keady will be adding another trophy into his case as he already been inducted into five other Hall of fames; the NJCAA Hall of Fame (1990), the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame (2001), the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame (2007), the Purdue Athletics Hall of Fame (2010) and the College Basketball Hall of Fame (2013).

Keady will be in good company and is joined with Pau Gasol, Dwayne Wade, Dirk Nowitzki, Tony Parker, Gene Bess, David Hixon, Gregg Popovich, Becky Hammon, Gary Blair, Jim Valvono, and the 1976 U.S. Women’s Olympic Team for the Class of 2023 inductees. The event will take place on August 11-12 in Springfield Massachusetts.

Chandler Prater added nine points, 11 rebounds and four steals for Kansas (25-11) and Wyvette Mayberry scored 12 points. The Jayhawks finished with their most wins since the 1997-98 team that also won 25 games and set a program record for home wins in a season with 19.

This season Kansas made its first appearance in the AP Top 25 in nearly a decade after the Jayhawks — who won 21 games last season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013 — set a program record with 10 consecutive wins to open the season.

Columbia (28-6) struggled offensively against the length and athleticism of the Kansas defense. The Lions, who went into the game ranked No. 13 nationally in scoring offense (78.8 per game) and No. 12 in rebound margin (plus-8.5), were held to fewer than 60 points for just the third time this season and outrebounded (49-41) for just the fourth time.

Franklin scored eight straight Kansas points in a 12-5 spurt that gave the Jayhawks a 29-25 lead — the largest by either team to that point — with a minute to go in the first half. After Kitty Henderson hit a 3 for the Lions, Chandler Prater's jumper made it 31-28 at intermission. Henderson hit a 3-pointer, Abbey Hsu made a jumper and Jaida Patrick added another 3 in the first 68 seconds of the third quarter to put Columbia ahead by five before a 15-0 spurt gave Kansas the lead for good.

Columbia missed 10 consecutive field goals and made just one of its next 15 from the field after Patrick's 3 and Kansas never trailed over the final 18 minutes.

Hsu led the Lions with 19 points and Kaitlyn Davis scored 13. Hsu finished the season with 606 points, two shy of the program record set by Camille Zimmerman in 2016-17.

Jackson had three blocks to extend her single-season Kansas record to 109.

Columbia is the first team in Ivy League history to advance to the WNIT's championship game. Last year, the Lions were the first team in conference history to make it to the Great Eight, where they fell to Seton Hall, 78-75.

Columbia’s 28 wins this season are a new program record, three more than the previous record set last year when the Lions went 25-7.

🏀 WBB: Kansas beats Columbia to win WNIT championship

GREAT BEND, Kan. — The Hutch Salthawk &nbsp;baseball team made its debut Friday on the road &nbsp;with a pair of run-rule loses to Great Bend. The Panthers took game one 13-3, then won the nightcap 16-6.

11 of the 13 Panther runs in game one came in the first three innings, including a 6-run third.&nbsp;

Hutchinson scored the first four runs of game two. The Panthers answered with four runs in the second inning, then went on to lead 7-5 with two runs in the fourth. But it was a 9-run sixth inning that ended things early.

The Salthawks will open the home part of their season schedule at Hobart-Detter Field on Wednesday, April 5th with a doubleheader against Newton beginning at 4pm.

The loss ended a tremendous season for the defending champion Gamecocks. They finished 36-1.

NBA, players reach deal for a new labor agreement

The NBA will have labor peace for years to come. The league and its players came to an agreement early Saturday on a new seven-year collective bargaining agreement. The deal will begin this summer and will last at least through the 2028-29 season. Either side can opt out then; otherwise, the new deal will last through 2029-30.

DALLAS (AP) — LSU is going to the women's national championship game for the first time. Alexis Morris scored 27 points, Angel Reese had 24 and the Tigers beat top-seeded Virginia Tech 79-72 in a national semifinal game. The Tigers are in their second season since coach Kim Mulkey returned to her home state to take over an LSU program that once lost five consecutive national semifinal games. LSU will play Sunday against the winner of the South Carolina-Iowa semifinal. Elizabeth Kitley had 18 points for Virginia Tech, the ACC champion that was in the Final Four for the first time.

UConn players navigate Ramadan fast during Final Four

HOUSTON (AP) — For UConn players Adama Sanogo, Samson Johnson and Hassan Diarra a traditional pregame meal before Saturday night's national semifinal against Miami won't be possible. The three are Muslims who observe Ramadan and adhere to a strict fast from dawn until sunset daily until April 20. With the sun setting in Houston just 10 minutes before the 7:49 p.m. tipoff, the players will only have time to scarf down a snack and down a drink before taking the court.

All female officials in women's Final Four for 1st time ever

DALLAS (AP) — The NCAA has an entirely female crew working the national semifinals and championship game at the women's Final Four this weekend. It's the first time that's ever happened according to the organization. The NCAA is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Title IX this year, which makes it fitting that there's all-female crews. Virginia Tech coach Kenny Brooks is only the third Black male to lead his team to the Final Four. He joined good friend Quentin Hillsman, who took Syracuse to the title game in 2016. Winthrop McGriff helped Cheyney make the Final Four in 1984.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Taking a break in the paddock after watching Max Verstappen during a practice session at the Australian Grand Prix, Melbourne teenager Kaitlyn Bourne was loving her day at the track. The 17-year-old Bourne was wearing a clear plastic poncho over a Red Bull sweater on a wintry day at Albert Park. She is a massive fan of Australian Formula One driver Daniel Ricciardo, who is sitting out this season. Bourne, who comes from a motorsport-loving family and watches every Grand Prix race, hopes that one day she will have the chance to support a female F1 driver. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said this week in Melbourne he believes gender equality in the sport is inevitable.

Sports Headlines for Saturday

WICHITA, Kan.—In a game that included big leads by both teams, then went back and forth through most of the second half, the Wichita Sky Kings earned their eighth win of the year 99-94 over the Enid Outlaws (4-5) Friday night at Wichita State's Koch Arena.

The Sky Kings jumped on top and led by 10 points at the 7:54 mark of the 1st quarter before the Outlaws went on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 18-18 with 3:29 to go in the 1st quarter. Wichita had a 24-20 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.&nbsp; That was short lived as Enid bounced back to take their first lead of the night 31-29 at the 7:59 mark of the the 2nd quarter and they extended that lead to enjoy a 51-45 half time lead.

But then it was blow after blow in the 3rd and 4th quarters, as this game produced 16 ties and 24 lead changes over the course of four quarters.

Finally, momentum swung over to the Sky Kings when Teddy Allen was fouled on a fade away corner left jumper that rattled home to tie the game at 87-87. Allen made the and 1 and that four point play gave the Sky Kings the lead at 88-87.

An Enid basket by Kaylon Tippins gave the Outlaws the lead 92-90 with 2:23 remaining.

Wichita answered right back with an Isaac Johnson euro-step basket to tie with 2:04 to go.&nbsp; Then Derick Colter took over and stroked a 15 footer from the left side of the free throw line to give the Sky Kings the lead 94-92 with 1:29 to play. Add another Johnson Free throw to extend the lead to three with :48 seconds to go, then Colter iced the game by hitting four straight free throws to preserve a 99-94 Sky Kings victory.

Teddy Allen returned to the line up after missing the past two games with an eye injury to score 30. Johnny McCants was solid with 14 points, Colter and Kam Williams had 11 each, Simmons added 8 and that included a sweet three point runner that ended the third quarter to give the Sky Kings a three point lead at the time. Johnson added 7, Charles Marquardt 4 and Terrell Brown and Justin Winton both had 2 points each.

The Outlaws put five in double figures being led by Julian Smith with 20 points, Tippins Ruston Hayward and Marvin Johnson each added 14 points, Martaveous McKnight and Ethan Chargois each had 11.

Wichita travels to Little Rock for a game on Saturday with a 6 p.m. tip and then play again on Sunday with a key match up with the Potowatomi Fire in Shawnee Oklahoma at 3 p.m. Potowatomi is 7-1 on the season after bouncing back from a loss to Enid earlier in the week to get a 25 point win over Shrevport Friday night 131-106.

🏀 Wichita Sky Kings prevail over Enid Outlaws in back and forth battle

HUTCHINSON, Kan.—Can't get enough March Madness? Let it extend into April at the Sports Arena Saturday.

State Tournaments all across Kansas wrapped up March 8-11. The NJCAA D1 Men's Tournament had a great stay in Hutch March 20-25.&nbsp; This week, the NCAA NIT Men's Tournament wrapped up, KU's Women's team is in the WNIT finals. It's final 4 weekend in Houston, and the 43rd HutchCC Quarterback Club Mid Kansas Classic will get under way at the Sports Arena.

This event shows off the "best of the best" high school basketball athletes from all across the state of Kansas.

The Sports Arena doors will open at noon. Please enter through the East side of the Sports Arena. The girls game will tip at 1 p.m. and the boys at 3 p.m.

Gate admission is $5; children 5 and younger are free.

There will be a girls 3-point shooting contest at halftime.

The Kansas City Chiefs have extended their agreement with Missouri Western State University to make St. Joseph the home of Chiefs Training Camp&nbsp;through the 2024 season.

“We are thrilled to announce that we will return to Missouri Western State University and the St. Joseph community for another two years,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said. “Missouri Western and St. Joseph have warmly hosted our team and fans for the past 13 years – a welcome start to the NFL season.

"I want to thank President Dr. Elizabeth Kennedy and Director of Athletics Andy Carter for their leadership throughout this process, and we look forward to starting our 2023 season at Missouri Western again this summer.”

Dick started all 36 games for the Jayhawks and averaged 14.1 points while shooting better than 40% from 3-point range. He made 83 3-pointers, a program record for a freshman.

🏀 MBB: Gradey Dick to leave Kansas for NBA draft after 1 season

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas football head coach Lance Leipold on Friday announced the addition of coaching veteran Sean Snyder to the staff as special Assistant to the Head Coach.

Snyder, an experienced college football coach for more than 20 years spent the 2022 season as the special teams coordinator/specialists coach at Illinois. Snyder spent the previous two seasons as the special teams coordinator at USC.

Snyder spent more than two decades at Kansas State, where he served as special teams coordinator/associate head coach from 2011-18 and special teams analyst in 2019 before moving to USC.

Snyder began his career at Kansas State as a part-time assistant coach in 1994 and 1995, then served as director of football operations from 1996 to 1998, assistant athletic director for football operations in 1999 and 2000, associate athletic director in 2001 and senior associate athletic director from 2002 to 2010. He then moved into his role working with the program’s special teams.

During his tenure, Kansas State ranked in the Top 15 of the ESPN Special Teams Efficiency rating five times, including first in 2017, second in 2015 and third in 2012. The Wildcats also were in the Top 25 of the Football Outsiders Special Teams Rating six times since 2011, including first in 2017, third in 2014 and 2019 and sixth in 2012. Snyder was named the national Special Teams Coordinator of the Year in 2015 by FootballScoop and Phil Steele and in 2017 by Phil Steele.

In 2020, USC’s special teams were ranked No. 1 nationally by Football Outsider and the Trojans were in the national Top 25 in NCAA statistics in kickoff return defense (10th at 17.0) and net punting (25th at 40.8). &nbsp;True freshman Parker Lewis was 20th nationally in field goals (1.6), Gary Bryant Jr. (also a true freshman) was 22nd in kickoff returns (26.2), Ben Griffith’s 46.4 punting average was the highest by a Trojan since 2003 and snapper Damon Johnson was a Mannelly Award finalist.

His 43.0 career punting average was a school record. &nbsp;He played in the 1992 Blue-Gray Game. He was inducted into Kansas State’s inaugural Ring of Honor Class in 2002 and into its Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016.

Snyder redshirted at Iowa in 1988, then saw action in two games for the Hawkeyes as a redshirt freshman in 1989 before transferring to Kansas State. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Kansas State in money and banking in 1994.

Snyder signed as a free agent with the Phoenix Cardinals in 1993 and the San Diego Chargers in 1994. He and his wife Wanda raised a daughter Katherine and sons Tate and Matthew. CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Cubs right-hander Marcus Stroman committed Major League Baseball’s first pitch-clock violation in the third inning of Thursday’s opening day game against the Milwaukee Brewers. With no outs, rookie Brice Turang on second base and Christian Yelich at the plate, plate umpire Ron Kulpa called the violation on Stroman at Wrigley Field. NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge rang in opening day the same way he marked many nights last season: with a home run. In his first game as New York Yankees captain, Judge hit a solo drive in the first inning off San Francisco’s Logan Webb, a 422-foot shot into the netting above Monument Park in center field. Judge hit a thigh-high cutter on the outside part of the plate for a 109 mph drive and his first opening-day home run. Judge hit an American League-record 62 home runs last year, one more than Roger Maris’ total with the 1961 Yankees.

HOUSTON (AP) — The college basketball season started with familiar faces and ended up with an unexpected Final Four. North Carolina was the preseason No. 1-ranked team only to miss the NCAA Tournament. Fellow bluebloods like Duke and Kentucky all fell out of the rankings at points. And reigning champion Kansas was among the first No. 1 seeds to fall short of making even the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight. The transfer portal allowing players to move freely is a factor in redistributing talent to quickly change rosters. That meant more opportunities for some and tougher roads for some traditional top programs.

HOUSTON (AP) — Alabama All-American forward Brandon Miller is heading to the NBA after displaying versatile talent and potential in his lone season of college basketball. But that season was also blemished by revelations that he was present at a fatal shooting near campus in January. The 6-foot-9, 200-pound freshman told ESPN his decision to leave for the NBA. A person with knowledge of the decision confirmed that decision to The Associated Press, but spoke on condition of anonymity pending Miller’s official declaration. He is projected as a potential top 5 draft pick.

EL DORADO – Freshman catcher&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/cymbalista_colin_zaji">Colin Cymbalista</a>&nbsp;hit his first home of the season and drove in a career-high five runs to lead the Hutchinson Community College baseball team to an 11-1 run-rule victory over Butler in eight innings and split the first two game of a Jayhawk West Series on Thursday at McDonald Stadium.

The Blue Dragons' eight-inning win over the Grizzlies snapped a four-game losing streak after Butler won the series opener 8-3 on Thursday. Games 3 and 4 will be played at Hobart-Detter Field beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

GAME 2 RECAP Cymbalista's big day in Game 2 started with his two-out two-run single in the first inning to give Hutchinson a 3-0 lead. He then capped off the Blue Dragons' eight-run eighth inning with a three-run home run for an 11-1 Hutchinson lead.

Cymbalista led the Blue Dragons' 13-hit attack, going 4 for 5 with five RBIs. He also scored two runs. Cymbalista also was strong defensively, throwing out a runner at second base trying to advance on a wild pitch to end a Butler threat in the fourth inning.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pablo Lopez and four Minnesota relievers combined on a two-hitter as the Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 2-0 on a breezy opening day Thursday.

Trevor Larnach and pinch-hitter Donovan Solano each drove in a run. Lopez allowed both Kansas City hits while walking three and striking out eight in 5 1/3 innings, outpitching former Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke.

A trio of Twins relievers easily ushered the game to Jhoan Duran, who worked around a walk in the ninth to earn the save on an overcast afternoon at Kauffman Stadium.

Greinke, who also lasted 5 1/3 innings, delivered a solid start for Kansas City to begin his 20th season in the big leagues. The 39-year-old right-hander allowed both runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four.

The Twins won despite leaving the bases loaded three times and 12 on base in all.

Salvador Perez and Kyle Isbel had the Royals' only hits.

Even though Greinke and Lopez matched scoreless innings through the fifth, both had to wiggle out of trouble.
