1. Wildcats Approach 200 From the Arc

• With 16 connections from 3-point range, K-State will reach the 200 made 3-point field goal mark for the third time in the Jeff Mittie era and the first time since the 2017-18 season.

2. K-State Ahead of Charity Record

• The Wildcats are shooting 78.6 percent from the free throw line this season. This would surpass the school record for free throw percentage in a season, which was set last season at 76.2 percent.

• Senior Gabby Gregory (114) and sophomore Serena Sundell (102) are the first set of K-State teammates to make 100 or more free throws in the same season since the 2018-19 season.

• According to HerHoopStats.com, the Wildcats rank 41st in the nation and third in the Big 12 in assisted shot rate (62.1) - which is the percentage of made field goals with an assist.

• The sophomore sister duo of Brylee and Jaelyn Glenn have combined for 96 steals (Jaelyn - 54; Brylee - 42). Jaelyn leads the Big 12 in total steals, while Brylee is sixth. The pair have combined for the most steals among two teammates in the Big 12 this season.

• K-State senior guard Gabby Gregory has registered her first career season with 400 or more points, 100 or more free throws made and 50 or more 3-point field goals made.

🏀 WBB: K-State Hosts Oklahoma on Sunday Afternoon

The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team and Dodge City have played four must-see games over the course of the last two seasons. All four have come down to the wire with plenty at stake.

The second meeting of the season between Hutchinson (15-10, 9-10 KJCCC) and the No. 14-ranked Conquistadors (18-6, 14-4) will be at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) with Glen Grunwald (PBP) and Dan Naccarato (color) calling the action beginning around 7:15 p.m. The Blue Dragon Sports Network will stream the game beginning at 7:15 p.m.

🏀 MBB: Blue Dragons primed for another wild matchup with Dodge City

Riding the wave of momentum from huge comeback victory on Wednesday in a pivotal Jayhawk Conference road game at Coffeyville, the Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team entertains the first-place Dodge City Conquistadors on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

Tipoff for Spring Homecoming 2023 between the Blue Dragons (19-6) and No. 11 Conquistadors (22-2) is at 5:30 p.m. The Blue Dragon Sports Network stream the game beginning at 5:15 p.m. Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) will begin its broadcast at 5:15 p.m.

With five games remaining in the regular season, the Blue Dragons took a huge step in securing a spot in the top 4 of the KJCCC standings with a 68-63 victory over Coffeyville on Wednesday at Coffeyville. The Blue Dragons trailed by 18 points with 3:42 to play in the third quarter and outscored the Red Ravens 33-10 from that point on.

The victory over Coffeyville gives the Blue Dragons (13-6 in the KJCCC) a two-game lead over the Ravens for fourth place in the league standings and Hutchinson owns a key tie-breaker over Coffeyville with a season series sweep.

Dodge City is riding quite a wave of momentum with a 15-game winning streak. The first-place Conquistadors (17-1 in KJCCC) took a 2.5 game lead in the league on Wednesday with a 70-63 victory over second-place Butler in Dodge City. 🏀 WBB: Blue Dragons to square off against 1st Place Dodge City

DENISON, Texas&nbsp;&nbsp;-&nbsp;&nbsp;The No. 17-ranked Hutchinson Community College softball team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday, falling 6-2 to Eastern Oklahoma State in the opening game of the THF Winter Blast.

Hutchinson’s second game against Grayson College was canceled because of weather conditions. Saturday’s game for the Blue Dragons (4-1) are at 10 a.m. against Paris Junior College and 2:30 p.m. against Weatherford College.

Eastern Oklahoma State took advantage of early Blue Dragon walks and errors to score five runs in their first three at-bats on Friday.

Sophomore Kierstan Weitze (2-1) started her first game of the season and allowed five hits and five runs over 2 1-3 innings. Weitze struck out two and walked three.

Freshman pitchers Korri Lies and Delaney Blakesley slowed down Eastern’s offense. Lies allowed one run with one hit and two strikeouts in three innings. Blakesley had a strikeout in a scoreless 1 2-3 innings.

Offensively, the Blue Dragons didn’t get their first hit off Eastern’s Makenzie Martin until the sixth inning, an Olivia Sandoval single.

The Dragons were held to a season-low three hits – singles by Sandoval, Allie Stipsits and Grace Sykora.

Stipsits had an RBI single with two out in the sixth inning to get the Dragons on the board, driving in Ella Dougherty. Sykora singled to lead off the seventh and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Blue Dragons were out-hit 6-3 and each team committed three errors.

Kansas improved to 15-7 on the year and 5-6 in Big 12 play with a 73-55 victory over TCU on Wednesday evening at Allen Fieldhouse. It snapped a two-game slide for the Jayhawks, who have already played four games against ranked teams during Big 12 play.

Chandler Prater led the way for KU against TCU, matching her career-high with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field in the victory. Prater hit three three-pointers in the game, establishing a new career-high, and added five rebounds and four assists.

Zakiyah Franklin scored in double figures for the seventh-straight game and 18th time this season as she totaled 18 points versus TCU. She also matched a season-best with seven assists and added four rebounds and two steals. Franklin has moved up to No. 18 on KU’s career scoring list and needs five points to reach 1,300 points in her career. She is second on the team in scoring, averaging 14.7 points per game for the season.

Taiyanna Jackson battled foul trouble against TCU, but still managed to record her 15th double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds in 25 minutes of action. She was 6-of-8 from the field, improving her field goal shooting to 66.2 percent, which ranks fourth nationally. Jackson has been named one of the Top 10 candidates for the 2023 Lisa Leslie Award, which is presented to the top center in NCAA Division I women’s basketball and she is one of 15 players named to the 2023 Naismith Women’s Defensive Player of the Year Watch List.

KU has won three straight matchups against Texas Tech and will be searching for a season-sweep of the Lady Raiders. The Jayhawks got 26 points apiece from Holly Kersgieter and Franklin, along with a double-double of 15 points and 18 rebounds from Jackson in a 77-59 victory over Tech on Jan. 4 in Lawrence.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.—Both of the Hutchinson High Salthawk basketball teams got wins over the visiting Maize Eagles on homecoming night at the Salthawk Activity Center on Friday, with the Salthawk Girls (12-4) slipping past Maize 32 to 28 and the boys winning the late game in fine fashion 62 to 49.

The two wins set up a show down in Maize on Tuesday night as Hutchinson travels to Maize South on Valentine's Day to take on the Mavericks.

The Salthawk girls started the night without one of their main players with Grace Posch sidelined with a turned ankle that she hurt in practice on Thursday.&nbsp; They also ended the night without their point guard Josie McLean as she had to leave the game with a possible concussion that happened on a baseline drive in the second half.

In addition to being without two of their starters, Hutch went scoreless in the 3rd quarter and only led by 1 point, 22 to 21 going into the final period. Things looked very bleak for the Salthawks, but that is when senior forward Libby Jackson took over by knocking down a trey from the right corner, then scoring an basket while being fouled for an and one late in the 4th. Jackson scored all of her 7 points in the 4th quarter and the Salthawk girls went on to hold the Eagles to only one basket in the final stanza to win 32 to 28.

Hutch was led in scoring by McLean with 11, Aliyah Green had 9, Jackson 7 and Hannah Ames scored 5.

Maize was led by Brynley Smith with 13, Mattie Brownell had 10, Maggie Salsbury chipped in 4 and Adley Pierce had 1.

Julian Smith knocked down a guarded three point shot right before the half to tie the game at 28, then Hutchinson used a 22 to 9 run in the 3rd quarter to take control of the game and cruise to their 16th win of the season 62 to 49 over the Maize Eagles Friday night.

Hutchinson found themselves in a little foul trouble in the second half, but got solid play from Devon Spiller off the bench to help get the win. 

Wade Meyer had another solid night to lead the team in scoring with 17. Garrett Robertson had 12 points, while Terrell King went 8 for 9 at the foul stripe in the second half to finish with 11. Nic Lange scored 8 including a key offensive rebound and put back in the low block that he scored on and was fouled to finish a three-point play at the line. Julian Smith ended the night with 5 points as did Dauntay King. Spiller also had 3 points on a key old fashioned three point play in the second quarter.

This win sets up a key matchup on Tuesday at Maize South as the Salthawks have defeated the Mavericks twice. Those are Maize South's only 2 losses on the season to this point. Maize South got by Andover Central 51 to 49 in a close game on Friday night. 

It will be a good matchup on Tuesday in Maize. Coverage begins on KWBW with the girls pregame at 5:45 p.m.

The game of baseball has been overrun with analytics.

Players and coaches have so many numbers at their disposal now that the mass of information can be a daunting task to figure out and go out and execute the game plan.

As Ryan Schmidt begins his 11th season on Saturday as the Hutchinson Community College head baseball coach, he is looking to take that analytical stress off his players and "simplify" the game for his players.

"We got off to one of the worst starts in a long time," said Schmidt, whose team begins the 2023 season on Saturday against the Southeast (Nebraska) Storm in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Hobart-Detter Field. "It took us a while to find our stride, but I was happy with some of the performances from our players late in the season.

"This season, we have a lot of strike throwers on the mound. We have a lot of really good hitters. We have to put our rotation together and put our lineup together. We will have to bring our defense along."

The Blue Dragons finished 38-23 last season after a dreadful 7-13 start. Five position players and nine pitchers return for the 2023 season for Schmidt, who is 354-192 at Hutchinson and 461-363 in 15 seasons as a head coach.

Third-year sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/sommer_braedyn_eehb">Braedyn Sommer</a>&nbsp;returns as the Blue Dragons' leading hitter from 2022. Sommer batted in the leadoff spot and hit .366 with a .475 on-base percentage. Sommer had 16 extra-base hits of his total of 48, including seven home runs. The sophomore outfielder, who was the primary designated hitter in 2022, drove in 31 runs, score 44 and stole 10 of 10 bases.

Corner infielder&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/henderson_ryan_sab3">Ryan Henderson</a>&nbsp;smacked 10 home runs from the middle of the order this season. Starting the 2023 season at first base, the Buhler product hit .311 with 56 total hits, 17 doubles and 45 RBIs.

The other two position returnees from 2022 are outfielders&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/babin_kael_ibra">Kael Babin</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/edmunson_will_rdcc">Will Edmunson</a>.

Babin hit .308 with 41 hits, five doubles and 30 RBIs. He stole 17 of 19 bases last season. Edmundson hit .289 with 13 total hits, four doubles and 10 driven in.

The fifth returning players missed 2022, but returns this season in middle infielder&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/powell_christian_dv61">Christian Powell</a>, who hit 200 in 13 games in 2021.

Right-handed starter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/dandelet_ben_xj34">Ben Dandelet</a>&nbsp;draws the Game 1 start on Saturday for the Blue Dragons. Dandelet struck out four and scattered eight hits in that game.

Sophomore right-hander&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/scott_reed_03bo">Reed Scott</a>&nbsp;had a strong first season out of the bullpen. Wickersham started as the closer last season but struggled through the middle stages of the season and produced a 3-2 record with three saves and an 8.19 ERA.

The obvious reasons for simplification for Schmidt are these … offensively, the Blue Dragons in 2022 hit .319 and averaged 8.5 runs per game. They produced those numbers with 460 strikeouts last season. The pitchers allowed 265 walks and hit 96 batters last season in a team 6.65 ERA, the highest of the Schmidt era.

"We had a lot of pitching issues early," Schmidt said. "We couldn't throw the ball over the plate. We had some games in a really good spot. We had two eighth-inning leads against No. 1 McLennan last season and we didn't hold them. That scared us out of the strike zone and we didn't think our stuff was good enough.

"This year, we are looking to simplify. We aren't making things more difficult; we are keeping a very simple approach and we are going to through the baseball over the plate with as much conviction as we can on every pitch."

Looking ahead to this season, the Blue Dragons open the season with four games against Southeast – two on Saturday and two more on Monday in Beatrice, Nebraska. The starting rotation will have Dandelet,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/smith_justin_u248">Justin Smith</a>, left-handed freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/mckee_gus_hrea">Gus McKay</a>&nbsp;and Wickersham.

"Reed is a guy the team trusts and he's been in the fire before," Schmidt said. "The sophomores are throwing the ball well, but they are going to have to prove it. The freshmen are guys who are saying, 'coach, we can pitch, too.' "

The Blue Dragons will have two freshmen catchers in&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/gunderson_cody_4bzo">Cody Gunderson</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/cymbalista_colin_zaji">Colin Cymbalista</a>. Schmidt already feels very good about his first-year catchers.

"I love our catching corps," he said. "They catch the ball extremely well. They have a chance to be some of the best catchers we've had here. Gunderson might have a higher (batting) average and Cymbalista has more thump. But I feel really good about how they receive and throw the baseball. They can play at a high level."

The infield will have Henderson at first half, Powell at second base, freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/wesslund_cooper_zdq0">Cooper Wesslund</a>&nbsp;at shortstop and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/childress_max_4ayg">Max Childress</a>&nbsp;will be at third.

"Cooper has been a pleasant surprise for us," Schmidt said. "He's owned that spot since Day 1 of fall ball. We are excited about what he can do. He's a great athlete. We knew he had the capability of being our shortstop and he's earned it.

"Max is a guy who won the job because he's been one of our most productive hitters. He finds a way to drive in runners and move runners."

With Babin, Sommer and Edmundson back, the outfield is the most experienced group. Babin, slated for centerfield, but has been slowed some by injury, showed he can go gap-to-gap to chase down balls. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/bradford_blake_qa9v">Blake Bradford</a>, the son of former Blue Dragon and major league draftee Josh Bradford. Will be in the lineup and likely in the No. 2 spot in the order.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/davis_jon_ucpo">Jon Davis</a>&nbsp;is another outfielder who will warrant playing time.

"We have a lot of good pieces," Schmidt said. "We just have to piece them all together."

The Blue Dragons were picked to finish fourth in the Jayhawk West preseason coaches' poll. The Blue Dragons finished fifth in the league last season, the lowest finish since 2013.

"It took us a while to find our stride, but I was happy with some of the performances from our players late in the season."This season, we have a lot of strike throwers on the mound. We have a lot of really good hitters. We have to put our rotation together and put our lineup together. We will have to bring our defense along."The Blue Dragons finished 38-23 last season after a dreadful 7-13 start. ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals acquired left-hander Anthony Misiewicz from their cross-state rival Kansas City Royals for cash considerations on Wednesday.

To make room on the 40-man roster, St. Louis designated right-hander James Naile for assignment on the Missouri native's 30th birthday.

The 28-year-old Misiewicz, who was expected to compete for a spot in the Royals bullpen, split last season between the Mariners and Kansas City. He went 1-2 with a 4.34 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 29 innings.

Misiewicz was expendable when the Royals bolstered their bullpen with a series of recent moves, trading outfielder Michael A. Taylor to the Twins and injury-prone shortstop Adalberto Mondesi to the Red Sox to net a trio of pitching prospects. The Royals also signed reliever Aroldis Chapman to a $3.75 million deal for 2023 in the hopes the seven-time All-Star can bounce back from a disappointing season with the Yankees.
