KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals selected eight players on the second day of the 2023 First-Year Player Draft, including four pitchers, one outfielder, two infielders and a two-way player.

<a>In the 3rd&nbsp;round (75th&nbsp;overall), the Royals selected right-handed pitcher&nbsp;</a>Hiro Wyatt&nbsp;out of Staples HS (Conn.). Wyatt was named 2023 Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year, after going 8-0 with a 0.51 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 54.2 innings, including a 42.1-inning scoreless streak. Wyatt’s senior season included a no-hitter with a school-record 18 strikeouts on May 11. He is committed to play baseball at the University of Southern California.

Kansas City selected left-handed pitcher&nbsp;Hunter Owen&nbsp;from Vanderbilt University in the 4th&nbsp;round (106th&nbsp;overall). Owen, who is listed at 6-foot-6, 261 pounds, went 4-0 with a 3.52 ERA (25 ER in 64.0 IP), 76 strikeouts and 17 walks in 12 starts for Vanderbilt as a junior this season. He threw a 2-hit shutout on March 17 vs. Ole Miss with a career-high 11 strikeouts, earning SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week honors.

In the 5th&nbsp;round (142nd&nbsp;overall), the Royals selected left-handed hitting outfielder&nbsp;Spencer Nivens&nbsp;out of Missouri State. Nivens was named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year as a redshirt sophomore in 2023, when he hit .341 with 14 HR and 45 RBI, reaching safely in 53 of 56 games. He hit for the cycle on Feb. 24 – the eighth cycle in school history – and ranked 11th&nbsp;in the country with 6 triples. Nivens in 2023 was also named to the MVC All-Defensive Team and was named MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team.

With their 6th-round pick (169th&nbsp;overall), Kansas City selected right-handed pitcher&nbsp;Coleman Picard&nbsp;from Bryant University. Picard had a 3.43 ERA (16 ER in 42.0 IP) in 10 starts and a team-high 59 strikeouts (12.6 K/9) this season. He pitched for Wareham in the 2023 Cape Cod League and went 1-0 in 3 starts with a 1.93 ERA (3 ER in 14.0 IP).

In the 7th&nbsp;round (199th&nbsp;overall), the Royals selected two-way player&nbsp;Trevor Werner&nbsp;from Texas A&amp;M University. Werner recorded 14 homers and 52 RBI in 57 games in 2023, including a 3-homer game vs. Alabama. He last pitched in 2021, when he recorded 11 strikeouts in 9.1 innings over 9 relief outings. Werner excelled in the 2023 Cape Cod League, where he hit .343 (12-for-35) with 6 extra-base hits and 11 RBI in 10 games with Brewster.

With their 8th-round pick (229th&nbsp;overall), the Royals selected shortstop&nbsp;Dustin Dickerson&nbsp;out of Southern Mississippi. Dickerson started 208 of 209 games during his four-year collegiate career. He was named First-Team All-Sun Belt Conference at shortstop this season, when he hit a career-best .328 (88-for-268) with 11 home runs and a .971 OPS, after hitting only 2 home runs in his first three seasons. He is the son of&nbsp;Bobby Dickerson, the Philadelphia Phillies Infield Coach who played seven seasons in the minor leagues from 1987-93.

In the 9th&nbsp;round (259th&nbsp;overall), Kansas City selected left-handed pitcher&nbsp;Jacob Widener&nbsp;out of Oral Roberts. Widener, who is listed at 6-foot-7, 235 pounds, recorded a 2.90 ERA (16 ER in 49.2 IP) in 30 appearances this season with 80 strikeouts (14.5 K/9). He was supposed to pitch for Chatham in the 2023 Cape Cod League, but Oral Roberts’ run in the College World Series prevented him from doing so.

With their 10th-round pick (289th&nbsp;overall) and final selection on the second day of the 2023 First-Year Player Draft, the Royals selected shortstop&nbsp;Justin Johnson&nbsp;out of Wake Forest. He hit .324 (77-for-238) in his only season with the Demon Deacons, setting career highs across the board with 35 extra-base this (16), 76 RBI and a 1.042 OPS. Johnson was named First Team All-ACC and was the Winston-Salem Regional Most Outstanding Player.

The Longhorns have been picked atop the poll each season since 2011 and have been the unanimous choice for the past three years. The preseason poll is determined by Big 12 head coaches who are not allowed to rank their own team. BYU was picked second in its debut season in the Conference, while Baylor was selected third, marking the seventh consecutive season the Bears have been in the top three. TCU was tabbed fourth, their highest rank since 2019, while Kansas placed fifth. Houston came in sixth with Iowa State following to round out the top seven of the poll. This season marks the first year that BYU, UCF, Cincinnati and Houston will compete in the Big 12. Three of the four new members made the NCAA Tournament in 2022. This season’s league schedule includes each team playing 18 matches over 10 weeks with six series matches and six single matches. Each team will play every Conference opponent at least once during the season. In 2022 Texas, the six-time defending league champion, became the fourth Big 12 team to capture a national championship. The Conference is one of only two leagues to have a team advance to the National Semifinals in three of the last four seasons (Baylor – 2019, Texas – 2020 &amp; 2022). KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals selected three players on the first day of the 2023 First-Year Player Draft.

With the 8th&nbsp;overall pick in the 1st&nbsp;round, the Royals selected&nbsp;Blake Mitchell, a left-handed hitting catcher from Sinton High School (Texas). In the 2nd&nbsp;round (44th&nbsp;overall), the Royals selected right-handed pitcher&nbsp;Blake Wolters&nbsp;out of Mahomet-Seymour High School (Ill.). With the 66th&nbsp;overall pick in Competitive Balance Round B, the Royals selected&nbsp;left-handed hitting outfielder&nbsp;Carson Roccaforte&nbsp;out of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

Mitchell, who turns 19 next month and is committed to LSU, was named the Gatorade Texas Player of the Year in both 2022 and 2023. This season he hit .474 with 14 doubles, 6 home runs and 41 RBI. He also reached base in 70% of his plate appearances, recorded a 1.543 OPS, stole 35 bases and drew 51 walks to just 8 strikeouts.

Mitchell participated in the 2022 Under Armour All-America Game hosted at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, where he won the MVP Award after driving in 5 RBI. He was also a member of the USA Baseball 18U National Team that won gold at the WBSC Baseball World Cup in 2022, where he earned the win on the mound with 2.2 scoreless frames against Taiwan.

Wolters, 18, is listed at 6-foot-4, 210 pounds and gave up basketball for senior season, when he was named the Gatorade Illinois Player of the Year on the diamond. He recorded a 0.43 ERA in 49.0 innings this year, in which he allowed just 13 hits and recorded 106 strikeouts (19.5 K/9). Wolters is committed to the University of Arizona.

Roccaforte, 21, slashed .318/.426/.538 (75-for-236) with 35 extra-base hits and 22 stolen bases in 65 games as a junior at Louisiana-Lafayette this season. He hit .325 in his three-year collegiate career, including a .392 average during regular season play as a sophomore in 2022. He also played 22 games with Bourne in the 2022 Cape Cod League.

Allisen Corpuz wins the US Women's Open at Pebble Beach for her first LPGA title

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Allisen Corpuz picked the right time and the right place for her first big win. She won the first U.S. Women's Open at Pebble Beach, shooting a final-round 69 for a three-shot victory. The 25-year-old from Hawaii is the first American in 20 years to make the U.S. Women's Open her first LPGA win. And she made it look easy. Corpuz was the only player to break par all four days at Pebble Beach. And she kept her emotions in check the whole way until wiping away tears on the 18th green. Charley Hull and Jiyai Shin finished second.

Wimbledon 2023: Novak Djokovic will be back at Centre Court and Carlos Alcaraz plays, too

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Novak Djokovic will be back at Centre Court on Monday to try to close out his fourth-round match against 17th-seeded Hubert Hurkacz. The seven-time champion won the first two sets in tiebreakers on Centre Court when play was suspended because it was too late. Djokovic's Wimbledon winning streak is at 31 matches and counting and he's 5-0 lifetime against Hurkacz. Hurkacz hadn't dropped a set in three wins before facing Djokovic. The 23-time Grand Slam champion is trying to tie Roger Federer's record of eight men's titles at Wimbledon. No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz faces Matteo Berrettini for a spot in the quarterfinals. Defending champion Elina Rybakina takes on Beatriz Haddad Maia, and two-time champion Petra Kvitova faces 2022 runner-up Ons Jabeur.

Iga Swiatek finally reaches the Wimbledon quarterfinals. Novak Djokovic's match was suspended

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Top-seeded Iga Swiatek saved two match points and came back to beat Belinda Bencic 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-3 to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time. Sunday's victory extended Swiatek's unbeaten run to 14 matches. That included a run to her fourth Grand Slam title at the French Open last month. Swiatek has won three championships at Roland Garros and one at the U.S. Open. But she never had been past the fourth round at the All England Club. Swiatek had a 37-match winning streak snapped during a third-round loss at Wimbledon a year ago. Bencic won the singles gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

Northwestern will gather more information on football hazing allegations amid Fitzgerald suspension

Uncertainty continues to swirl around the Northwestern football program after allegations of hazing led to the suspension of coach Pat Fitzgerald this week. One day after the suspension, The Daily Northwestern published a story that detailed some of the allegations while claiming that Fitzgerald "may have known that hazing took place." That led university president Michael Schill to write an open letter to the community acknowledging he may have erred in the level of punishment handed down and that he planned to speak to university leaders to determine his next steps. Meanwhile, football practice begins in just a few weeks with the season opener Sept. 3 at Rutgers quickly approaching.

Wembanyama more aggressive in stronger second Summer League game with Spurs in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Victor Wembanyama was yelling in celebration, punching the air, even got a Band-Aid on his right cheek because of some physicality. For his second act in Las Vegas, Wembanyama showed some fire. The No. 1 pick in this year's draft looked much more like himself in his second game of Summer League on Sunday. He finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds, but the Spurs lost 85-80 to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Pittsburgh selects hard-throwing LSU pitcher Paul Skenes with top pick of amateur draft

SEATTLE (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates have selected hard-throwing LSU right-handed pitcher Paul Skenes with the top pick in baseball's amateur draft. Skenes went 12-3 as a pitcher, with 209 strikeouts in 122 innings in helping lead the Tigers to the College World Series championship. The pick was announced by Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr., the top pick of the 1987 draft by the Seattle Mariners. For the second time in three years, the Pirates held the top overall selection after selecting catcher Henry Davis at the top of the 2021 draft. Davis made his major league debut last month for Pittsburgh. LSU teammate Dylan Crews went No. 2 to Washington with high school outfielder Max Clark being selected third by Detroit.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Gabby Thomas held off Sha'Carri Richardson with the best time in the world this year to win the women's 200 meters at the U.S. track and field championships. Thomas caught up to Richardson rounding the curve and powered to the finish in 21.60 seconds. The 26-year-old Thomas skipped the 100 to conserve her energy for the 200. She finished eighth at nationals last season as she dealt with a hamstring injury. Richardson accomplished what she wanted to at nationals. She qualified in both sprint events for worlds next month in Budapest, Hungary. Richardson won the 100 on Friday. In the men's 200, Erriyon Knighton held off Kenny Bednarek for the win.

Victoria Azarenka of Belarus booed at Wimbledon after loss to Elena Svitolina of Ukraine

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Victoria Azarenka says it "wasn't fair" that she was booed at Wimbledon after her loss to Ukrainian rival Elina Svitolina. Azarenka is from Belarus. She knew that Svitolina does not shake hands with Russian and Belarusian players because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, so she walked directly to the umpire to shake hands. She also seemed to give a slight wave to Svitolina, who won in a third-set tiebreaker. But boos rained down from the crowd at No. 1 Court as Azarenka gathered her equipment. Azarenka said she's not sure the crowd understood what was happening. She says she was trying to be respectful of Svitolina.

Chris Paul, formally introduced by Warriors, reveals plenty about his motivation

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Chris Paul worked out with new teammate Stephen Curry in Atlanta on Sunday morning before traveling to Las Vegas. His assessment of the session: They didn't miss too many shots. Evidently, Paul's time with the Golden State Warriors is off to a flying start. CLEVELAND (AP) — Ryan Yarbrough completed a journey he never expected to take.

Two months after suffering facial fractures when he was struck by a 106 mph line drive, Yarbrough returned to the mound Sunday and helped the struggling Kansas City Royals to a 4-1 win over Cleveland that felt extra special.

“More than I could have dreamed of,” Yarbrough said.

With his wife, daughter and other family members at Progressive Field, Yarbrough (2-4), who didn't know what the future held when he was smashed by the liner from Oakland's Ryan Noda on May 7, pitched six solid innings as the Royals ended a six-game skid.

Yarbrough's statistical line was less important than him returning from a frightening moment that could have ended his career.

“I have an understanding of what happened and coming back from it and what could have been and how lucky and blessed I am,” said the 31-year-old left-hander. “It’s just been great and the amount of support from the guys, especially after the game. It's been great.”

Yarbrough's return was a huge boost for the Royals, who haven't had much to celebrate so far this season.

“Incredible," said center fielder Kyle Isbel, who homered and made a game-saving catch in the ninth for Kansas City. "That’s not just a baseball injury. That’s life. Seeing him walk into the dugout today, the energy he had was really incredible and it really sparked the dugout.”

Yarbrough said the quick response by Kansas City's medical personnel played an important role in his recovery. He feels lucky that he didn't need stitches or surgeries.

Once his facial bones healed, Yarbrough was determined to get back quickly.

"I don’t think anybody knew what the time frame was going to be or how long it was going to be,” he said. “It was just kind of a waiting game. Extremely blessed.”

After his first pitch, Yarbrough let his instincts take over.

“It was great. I felt like I’ve been able to soak it in the last couple days and really just try to think about it as going to back to work as much as possible," he said.

Carlos Hernández pitched two scoreless innings and Scott Barlow finished up for his 11th save, but not without some nervous moments.

Barlow gave up a pair of two-out singles in the ninth before Myles Straw sent a pitch toward the gap in right center. But Isbel got a nice jump and raced to his left before making his diving grab as Kansas City avoided a winless road trip.

“I just put my head down and ran to the spot,” Isbel said. "I stayed aggressive the whole time and I knew I could get to it.”

Michael Massey hit a two-run triple in Kansas City's three-run sixth off Shane Bieber (5-6), who came in 6-0 in 14 career starts against the Royals. The right-hander allowed four runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Kansas City staggered into the All-Star break at 26-65 — the second-most losses before the break in franchise history.

Cleveland reached the season's unofficial midpoint in first place in the AL Central and at .500 (45-45) or better for the seventh year in a row.

It's not certain how much longer Bieber will be around.

The Guardians will consider trading the 2020 Cy Young Award winner, who is only under contractual control through next season, before the Aug. 1 deadline. Cleveland could be enticed to move the 28-year-old for the right package to help them this season or in the future.

Isbel led off the fifth with his second homer, a shot over the wall in right-center, to tie it 1-1.

Bieber then hurt himself by hitting Perez — with an 0-2 pitch — and Kansas City's All-Star catcher scored on Fermin's double. After Isbel singled, Massey made it 4-1 by pulling his two-out triple into the right-field corner.

Kansas City's Nicky Lopez made his MLB debut in the outfield and had one of the game's biggest plays.

Lopez threw out Cleveland's Amed Rosario trying to go from first to third in the sixth inning. Rosario was initially ruled safe, but the Royals won the replay challenge.

“I knew they might be a little aggressive knowing it was my first time in the outfield in professional baseball,” said Lopez, who has played shortstop, second and third.

Lopez, who hadn't played the outfield in a game since high school, has been shagging flies over the past two weeks so he'd be ready to play if needed.

Royals: OF Edward Oliveras (oblique strain) was placed on the 10-day injured list but mostly to insure Kansas City was at full strength for the series finale. Manager Matt Quartaro called Oliveras' injury “extremely mild.” He was scratched from Saturday's lineup with back tightness.

Guardians: 1B Josh Bell (knee soreness) was held out of the starting lineup after fouling a ball off his knee in Saturday's win. He pinch-hit in the seventh and grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Royals: It won't get any easier for Kansas City, which will return from the break to host AL East-leading Tampa Bay. RHP Alec Marsh (0-2, 7.00 ERA) will start the series opener against Rays RHP Tyler Glasnow (2-3, 4.10).

Guardians: Cleveland will open the unofficial second half on the road in Texas for three games against the Rangers (July 14-16) with RHP Aaron Civale (3-2, 2.56) starting the opener.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Monarchs defeated the Great Bend Bat Cats, 9-2 on Sunday evening at Hobart-Detter Field for their third straight win and second consecutive over the Bat Cats. 

The win also goes down in the history books as the 400th win in Monarchs' program history, which started in 2009.&nbsp;

The Monarchs are now 3-0 since the All-Star break and have won three straight games for the first time this summer.&nbsp;

Hutchinson (10-11) starting pitcher Brady Beverman went seven scoreless innings on the mound, striking out six and walking none. Beverman earned the win, his first of the season.

The Monarchs scored one in each of the first three innings to lead 3-0 after three. Hutchinson added three more in the fifth on three hits, including an RBI single from Cal York and Caleb Cotton. Hutchinson scored two more in the sixth to extend its lead to 8-0 after six innings.

HutchCC product Will Edmunson, who had five RBI on Saturday night, homered to dead center in the seventh to lead 9-0 after seven.&nbsp;

The Bat Cats scored their lone two runs in the eighth inning off of Monarchs reliever Cole Torreau. Great Bend (17-7) had 11 hits in the game, but also struck out 11 times and stranded 10 baserunners.

Jaden Gustafson and Edmunson both led the Monarchs offense with two hits apiece. Hogan Shelby and Cal York each drove in two runs in the victory.

The Monarchs will go for the sweep on Monday night in Great Bend, when they face the Bat Cats at Al Burns Memorial Field for a 7 p.m. first pitch. The Monarchs return to Hutchinson on Wednesday to open a series against the Derby Twins at Hobart-Detter Field.

⚾ Monarchs win third straight, earn win No. 400 in program history

TULSA, OK - Aaron Sabato hit a two-run home run in the top of the eighth to tie the game and then a solo home run by Alerick Soularie gave the Surge the push they needed to rally and defeat Tulsa. Wichita won the fifth game of the series 4-3 and Tulsa now leads the series three games to two.

The Drillers scored first during the bottom of the second. Yusniel Diaz hit a two-run home run over the right field wall.

Seth Gray hit a ball straight over the center field wall for a solo home run and gave the Wind Surge their first run of the ball game in the top of the fourth.

Tulsa added one more run in the bottom of the fourth. Diego Cartaya hit an RBI single to left field.

A two-run home run hit over the right field wall by Aaron Sabato tied the ball game in the top of the eighth inning.

The Wind Surge took the lead in the top of the ninth. The tie-breaking run and the third home run of the day came at the hands of Alerick Soularie when he hit a solo home run 371 feet over the left field wall.

⚾ Wind Surge rally to down Tulsa

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Monarchs defeated the Great Bend Bat Cats in the series opener, 10-5 on Saturday evening at Hobart-Detter Field. The win for the Monarchs was the second straight win to start the second half of the season.

HutchCC product Will Edmunson broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning with a grand slam off the clubhouse in left field to give the Monarchs a 6-2 lead, marking the third grand slam hit by the Monarchs this summer. Edmunson finished the night going 3-for-5 with five RBI&nbsp; and two stolen bases.&nbsp;

The Bat Cats pulled within 6-4 in the top of the seventh inning to get within striking distance. The Monarchs answered with a run on an RBI single through the left side from Paris Pridgen.&nbsp;

Hutchinson (9-11) added three more runs in the eighth inning, as Austin Coyle, Blake Bradford and Edmunson all scored a run to extend the lead to six, 10-4. Great Bend (17-6) scored one in the top of the ninth inning, but that would be the only damage done.

Justin Smith earned the win for the Monarchs, going five innings, allowing three hits, two runs (one earned), and five strikeouts. Noah Kelley went two innings of relief, as did Carson Cornelius, who earned his third save of the season.

TULSA, OK - Wichita put men on base but failed to take advantage of their opportunities as they hit two for nine with runners in scoring position. Game four of the series went to Tulsa as they defeated the Wind Surge 6-4. The Drillers lead the series three games to one.

Wichita scored the first run of the game in the top of the second. Seth Gray was able to reach home after a wild pitch blew by the Drillers catcher. The Wind Surge scored one more run when Alerick Soularie stole home after a botched dropped third strike throw allowed for the opportunistic base running.

The Drillers tied the game in the bottom of the third. Eddys Leonard hit an RBI when he grounded into a force out at second then Imanol Vargas hit a sacrifice fly that scored the tying run.

Tulsa took a big lead in the bottom of the fourth. Kody House hit a solo home run and Leonard hit a two-run home run. Deigo Cartaya then hit an RBI single to wrap up the four-run half-inning.

The Surge tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth but came up short. Drillers pitching walked Brooks Lee with the bases loaded that forced a run in. Yoyner Fajardo then hit an RBI on a ground ball into a force out at second.

⚾ Wind Surge leave runners on base in Tulsa

CLEVELAND (AP) — Aaron Civale struck out a season-high nine over seven innings and Josh Bell hit a two-run homer, sending the Cleveland Guardians to a 3-0 win over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

Civale (3-2) allowed two hits and did not walk a batter while throwing 100 pitches, 70 for strikes. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 2.56 in his seventh start since missing two months with a strained left oblique.

“Aaron was lights out with nine punchies, only two hits,” Bell said. “When we get an outing like that with our bullpen, we should win. Once we get going and things click, we’ll be all right.”

Trevor Stephan worked the eighth and Emmanuel Clase picked up his 25th save, wrapping up the two-hitter. Cleveland (44-44) won its second straight and improved to .500 for the first time since April 28, when it was 13-13.

“The last couple of times out, Aaron is commanding so well and he’s been throwing strikes, it’s fun to watch,” Guardians manager Terry Francona said. “He was working so fast tonight. Heck, everybody was.”

The game was completed in 1 hour and 51 minutes, making it the shortest nine-inning contest in the history of Progressive Field, which opened in 1994.

Bell’s blast onto the home run porch in left came off Royals starter Daniel Lynch (2-4) and extended the Guardians’ lead to 3-0 in the fourth. Josh Naylor singled home Amed Rosario in the first, then singled and scored on Bell’s ninth homer of the year.

Naylor and Bell are responsible for 35.7% of Cleveland’s RBIs, the most by a duo in the majors. Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor of the Mets are second at 30.7%.

Bobby Witt Jr. doubled in the fourth, MJ Melendez doubled in the fifth and Maikel Garcia walked in the ninth for Kansas City’s only baserunners.

“I’m trying to make sure that I’m focused and have conviction with each pitch,” Civale said. “After my injuries the past few years, I need to give it my best effort because I know I have to make the most of it.”

The Royals are 0-5 on their seven-game trip, totaling 26 hits while being outscored 31-8. Lynch gave up three runs and six hits in six innings.

Civale struck out Salvador Perez and Nick Pratto in all six of their plate appearances. Pratto was caught looking all three times, the last of which caused his frustration to surface. He was ejected by plate umpire Brennan Miller.

“Nick took it a little too far, but I understand because our guys aren’t getting results,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “Sometimes, it feels like it’s you against the world and I think that’s what’s happening.”

Royals third baseman Maikel Garcia fouled a pitch off the right side of his face in the fourth, but remained in the game.

Guardians C Bo Naylor received one-on-one instruction from hitting coach Chris Valaika before the game and was not in the lineup.

The rookie and younger brother of Josh Naylor is batting .149 with 18 strikeouts in 47 at-bats since he was recalled on June 17 from Triple-A Columbus.

“Catchers have a lot on their plate, so we’re trying not to give him too much,” Francona said. “He’s got some adjustments to make, and we think he can.”

Royals: RHP Brad Keller (right shoulder impingement) has made two starts among three rehab appearances for Triple-A Omaha, going 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA. Keller has not pitched for Kansas City since May 15 at San Diego.

Aaron Civale strikes out season-high 9, Guardians blank Royals

Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball coach Tommy DeSalme has announced a pair of changes to his staff – one promotion and one new hiring – effective for the 2023-24 season.

DeSalme has promoted assistant coach Eric Nitche to Associate Head Coach and announced the hiring of Kyle Pugh as an assistant coach.

Nitche will begin his third season with the Blue Dragons in 2023-24. He has been an assistant with DeSalme for nine seasons, the first seven while at Cowley College in Arkansas City. The Blue Dragons have gone 46-21 in the past two seasons with one NJCAA Tournament appearance.

“This promotion is well deserved,” DeSalme said of his long-time assistant. “I believe Eric is one of the best coaches in the country and he is a great representative of Hutch CC.”

Pugh joins the Blue Dragon staff this season after spending the last two years at Cloud County Community College as an assistant.

Originally from Champaign, Illinois, Pugh has coaching experience at Cloud County, Jacksonville University and the University of Illinois under coaches John Groce and Brad Underwood. Pugh started as a student coach at Parkland College, an NJCAA Division II school in Champaign, Illinois.

“We are so excited to add Kyle to our staff,” DeSalme said. “He comes with great experience for a young coach.  He knows the Jayhawk Conference and has an incredible work ethic.  He will be an addition not just to our team, but to the college and community.”

The Blue Dragon men’s basketball team will open the 2023-24 season with the Blue Dragon Classic on November 3 and 4 at the Sports Arena.

Cleveland brings nearly two decades worth of coaching experience at UAB (2002-06), Missouri (2006-11), Arkansas (2011-19) and most recently&nbsp;St. John's (2019-23).&nbsp;Widely regarded as one of the top young coaches in the game, Cleveland has established a reputation as an avid and adept recruiter. TULSA, OK - Wind Surge batters were walked a season record breaking 13 times in tonight’s ball game. This proved to be the deciding factor and helped Wichita defeat Tulsa 8-2 despite the Drillers out hitting the Surge six hits to five.

Wichita drove in the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. Patrick Winkel hit an RBI single into left field that gave the Surge the lead.

Alerick Solarie extended the Wind Surge lead in the top of the fifth. He crushed a ball over the left field wall for a solo home run.

Tulsa got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Ismael Alcantara hit a line drive RBI single to center field. Austin Gauthier then hit a ground ball that was able to drive in another run for the Drillers and tied the game.

The Wind Surge were able to take the lead back in the top of the sixth. Drillers pitching walked four straight Wind Surge batters that forced a run to score and then Will Holland hit a two RBI single into center field.

Alex Isola hit a solo home run to kick off the top of the seventh inning. The Surge then added two more runs in the inning. First off a wild pitch where Winkel was able to reach home, and then Holland hit his third RBI of the game on a single to third base.

Chad Donato got his first start in a month and pitched four solid innings, gave up two hits and gave up no runs. He also struck out six batters. Hunter McMahon earned the win off his two and two thirds innings pitched where he allowed no runs off no hits and struck out four batters.

Kyle Hurt was the starting pitcher for Tulsa. He also pitched four innings, gave up two runs on two hits and struck out six batters as well. Ben Harris was credited with the loss.

The Wichita Wind Surge improve to (5-4),(33-44) and the Tulsa Drillers fall to (3-6),(33-45). Tulsa leads the Coors Light Propeller Series 11-4 with nine games to play.

The Monarchs scored one in each of the first two innings, and then exploded for nine runs in the third. The big blow in the third inning was a grand slam hit by Jarrett Flaggert down the left field line to extend the lead. Hutchinson sent 13 to the plate in the inning and did so on only four hits.

The Black Sox scored all of its runs on one swing of the bat, a three-run home run to left from Chris Pate. Pate, Mitch Loucks and Kyle Elliott each had two hits to account for the six total team hits.

Hutchinson (8-11) tallied seven hits in the game, led by Will Edmunson with two hits. Flaggert had a team-high four RBI, while Edmunson, Caleb Cotton and Jaden Gustafson each had two RBI.

Alec Stanfield made his debut on the mound for the Monarchs, earning the start and the win. He went two innings, striking out four and only allowing one baserunner, a hit batter. Camden Cornelius, Brady Bell, Cole Tourreau, Reed Scott, and even Monarchs manager Casey Lippoldt each threw an inning of relief each.&nbsp;

The Monarchs return to the diamond on Friday night, when they open a three-game series against the Great Bend Bat Cats. The use of a one-way communication device between a coach in the dugout and a team’s catcher for the purposes of calling pitches will be permitted in high school baseball beginning in 2024.

This change to Rules 1-6-2 and 3-2-5 was one of five rules revisions approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Baseball Rules Committee at its June 4-6 meeting in Indianapolis. The recommendations were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

The new rules prohibit coaches from communicating with any other player besides the catcher on defense and with any player while batting. The coach must also be in the dugout when using the communication device.

“This change is consistent with the growth of the game and is indicative of a measured and responsible approach to enable technology into our level of competition,” said Elliot Hopkins, NFHS Director of Sports and Educational Services and liaison to the Baseball Rules Committee. “The committee has made these changes to maintain the balance between offense and defense; increase the pace of play; and will responsibly manage technology so there is no advantaged gained by schools that have more available resources than some of their contemporaries. Creating a level playing field is paramount to education-based athletics.”

Game management by umpires was addressed with a change to Rule 10-2-3h. The edit removes spectators’ behavior from the umpire-in-chief’s jurisdiction when deciding to forfeit a contest. Only infractions by players, coaches or team/bench personnel are under the umpire’s jurisdiction. The committee agreed that poor behavior by spectators should be handled by game administration.
