KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Dairon Blanco tripled, doubled twice, singled and drove in three runs and the Kansas City Royals overcame Spencer Torkelson’s two-homer night to outscore the Detroit Tigers 11-10 on Tuesday.

“You have to get ready every day,” Blanco, who ranked the day as his best ever in baseball, said through an interpreter. “A day like today you just get ready and take advantage of it.”

Blanco tripled and scored to help the Royals tie it at 2 in the third, and had a run-scoring bunt hit to cap a five-run fourth. He doubled and scored in both the sixth and eighth innings for his first career four-hit game.

“Every one of the hits was important,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “That’s what stood out to me. It was nice for him because I know he’s been pressing a little bit. To see him do that was rewarding.”

Blanco admitted he was trying for a home run to complete the cycle in his final at-bat, falling a few feet short of his first career homer, instead settling for an RBI double that made it 10-6.

“I definitely went out there looking for it,” Blanco said. “As soon as it left the bat I thought it had a chance, but as soon as I saw it hit dirt I thought I needed to find more push ups.”

Seven consecutive Royals reached safely in the fourth en route to a 7-2 lead. Freddy Fermin and Drew Waters had RBI extra-base hits and Edward Olivares slapped a two-run single through a drawn-in infield.

“Tenacity to keep adding on throughout, being advantageous there to keep grinding through,” Quatraro said. “We needed every single run we had.”

In the first inning, Torkelson blasted Daniel Lynch’s sinker 430 feet to left for his first homer since July 2 and a 2-0 lead. He had a three-run shot — his 14th of the season — to left in the fifth to cut it to 7-5.

“I was looking for the mistake and got a couple,” Torkelson said. “There was a lot of good in that game. At the end of the day we had a lot of things go for us, but they just capitalized on a couple more mistakes than we did.”

Torkelson added a seventh-inning double. He had career highs with five RBIs and 10 total bases.

Lynch (3-4) completed five innings, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks. He struck out three.

“I didn’t think I threw the ball that well,” Lynch said. “Two mistakes were magnified and I didn’t get ahead of guys as much as I would have liked to. Stuff wasn’t really where I’d like it, but the main thing is we go out there and win.”

Detroit scored four in the ninth as Scott Barlow walked three but escaped by retiring Riley Greene on a fly ball with two Tigers on base.

“It was nice to see us respond,” Tiger manager A.J. Hinch said. “Good at-bat after good at-bat against a good pitcher, so that’s a good sign. We had the right guy up at the end and a chance for a big swing and came up one run short.”

Detroit’s Tarik Skubal (0-1) made his third start of the season after missing almost a year after surgery on his left elbow. He allowed seven runs on eight hits, striking out three over four innings.

Javier Báez doubled and scored in the sixth for the Tigers. Báez had three hits and stole two bases.

Maikel Garcia drove in four runs for Kansas City.

Royals OF Edward Olivares (left oblique strain) was activated from the 10-day IL. 2B/OF Samad Taylor was optioned to Triple-A Omaha.

Tigers LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (5-5, 2.70) was set to face LHP Ryan Yarbrough (2-4, 5.29) on Wednesday.

AMARILLO, Texas - The Wind Surge out hit the Sod Poodles 17 hits to nine but could not execute on their advantage as they went three for eighteen with runners in scoring position. Amarillo took the first game of the six-game series 10-7.

The Wind Surge were the first on the board in tonight’s back-and-forth ball game. Alex Isola hit an RBI double down the third-base line in the top of the first.

Amarillo didn’t waste time in putting up some runs of their own. In the bottom of the second Ivan Melendez hit a two-run home run to give the Sod Poodles the lead.

The lead swung back to Wichita in the top of the third. Brooks Lee hit an RBI single and DaShawn Keirsey Jr. followed him up hitting a two-run home run to put the Surge up by two.

As quickly as the Surge took the lead, they lost it right back in the bottom of the third. Seth Beer hit a two RBI single to tie the game. Dyvision De Los Santos then hit a three-run home run for a Sod Poodle three run advantage.

Will Holland took a few runs off the Amarillo lead in the top of the fourth when he crushed a ball out the park for a two-run home run.

The Sod Poodles hit a pair of home runs in the bottom fourth and fifth innings. First, Neyfy Castillo hit a solo home run in the fourth and then Ivan Melendez hit a two-run home run in the fifth.

The Surge cut the Sod Poodle lead to three in the top of the sixth. Yunior Severino hit a two-out RBI double on a line drive to center field.

Carlos Luna started on the mound for the Wind Surge. He pitched four full innings where he gave up eight runs off seven hits. He also struck out five batters and walked one. He was credited with the loss.

The starting pitcher for Amarillo was Dyni Olivero. He also pitched a full four innings. He gave up six runs off 11 hits, struck out three batters and walked another. Michel Otanez got the win for Amarillo.

The Wichita Wind Surgefall to (7-9, 35-49) and the Amarillo Sod Poodles improve to (11-5, 45-40).

Alex Isola hit an RBI double down the third-base line in the top of the first.Amarillo didn’t waste time in putting up some runs of their own. In the bottom of the second Ivan Melendez hit a two-run home run to give the Sod Poodles the lead.The lead swung back to Wichita in the top of the third. Brooks Lee hit an RBI single and DaShawn Keirsey Jr. followed him up hitting a two-run home run to put the Surge up by two.As quickly as the Surge took the lead, they lost it right back in the bottom of the third. ⚾ Wichita Wind Surge drop series opener in Amarillo

Former Hutchinson Community College pitcher L.J. McDonough became the 53rd Blue Dragon in program history to reach the professional level when he signed an undrafted free-agent contract with the Atlanta Braves on Monday.

McDonough pitched for two seasons, mostly out of the bullpen, for the Blue Dragons in 2019 and 2020. He then spent two seasons at Wichita State University before transferring to Florida Gulf Coast University for his final season of eligibility in 2023.

McDonough is a hard-throwing 6-foot-4, 200-pound pitcher from Blanchard, Oklahoma. He was one of five players signed by the Braves as undrafted free agents (UDFAs) on Monday.

McDonough's freshman season had its ups and downs at Hutchinson. He made 15 appearances, including five starts, going 1-2 with one save and a 6.97 earned-run average. He struck out 53 in 31 innings, but allowed 30 hits, 30 runs and 25 walks for the 2019 Jayhawk West champion and Region VI runner-up Blue Dragons.

The 2020 season was much-improved for McDonough, but that season was cut short by the Coronavirus pandemic. In six appearances and 8 2-3 innings in 2020, McDonough was 1-0 with a 3.12 ERA and 20 strikeouts.

At Wichita State in 2021, McDonough made 16 appearances, going 1-0 with a 2.49 ERA. He was selected an NCAA Academic All-American. In 2022, McDonough was 3-2 with a 7.40 ERA in 17 appearances with the Shockers.

As Florida Gulf Coast's closer this past season, McDonough had an exceptional season going 7-2 with six saves in 20 appearances. He posted a collegiate career low 2.47 ERA and struck out 61 on 47 1-3 innings.

McDonough is the first Blue Dragon to sign an undrafted free-agent contract since Cole Donaldson signed with the Minnesota Twins after the 2019 season and he is the 14th Blue Dragon to sign a UDFA. A total of 39 Blue Dragons have been drafted by Major League teams since the program began in 1985.

The Blue Dragons have had at least one player drafted or signed in three-straight and 9 of the past 10 seasons.

⚾ McDonough signs UDFA contract with Braves

WICHITA, Kan.&nbsp;— The Wichita Wind Surge announced this morning that Riverfront Stadium will be the home to seven high school football games this fall, one of those being the Buhler vs. McPherson game on Thursday, October 19.

"You know I think it provides a really cool opportunity for our kids, our coaches and our community," Buhler athletic director Justin Seuser said. "Obviously the Buhler-McPherson game is great regardless of where it is played, but I think this will be a pretty cool opportunity and memory that our kids will be able to hold onto and remember for a long long time."

The game was originally scheduled to be played in McPherson, but will now be played at the 10,000+ seat stadium on the banks of the Arkansas River in downtown Wichita.

"I really appreciate Mac and their AD Shane Backus," Seuser said. "This was a Mac home game that they went away from to play on a neutral field, so this really means a lot to us."

With the game being played on a Thursday night late in the season, Seuser said it's a great opportunity to showcase this rivalry outside of Reno and McPherson counties.

"We should be one of the key matchups going on around central Kansas, so we're expecting and hoping for a really good crowd," Seuser said. "I know the Buhler faithful will travel well and same with Mac, so it'll be a really good experience for everybody."

The other games to be played at Riverfront Stadium this fall include Maize vs. Maize South (Sept. 29), Bishop Carroll vs. Kapaun Mt. Carmel (Oct. 6), Wichita West vs. Wichita North (Oct. 7), Wichita Northwest vs. Wichita West (Oct. 12), Andover vs. Andover Central (Oct. 13) and Derby vs. Newton (Oct. 20).

With a record of 26-9, and nine regular season games remaining plus the playoffs, the Great Bend Bat Cats were on pace to potentially break their franchise record of 33 wins that was set last year. That feat will be harder to accomplish after the organization decided Monday to not play the remainder of their league season.

While playing in Derby Sunday, many of the players’ vehicles, parked at Al Burns Memorial Field in Great Bend, were severely damaged or totaled from the severe storm that passed through Barton County. Bat Cats General Manager Roger Ward said the team decided the players should go home to get matters resolved. "This is a good club, a good group of guys and the coaching staff is doing great," said Ward. "You'd like to see that continue, but when real life things happen there is no way we can make these guys stick around and play baseball. They need support from their family." While the decision was made to not play the final seven Jayhawk Collegiate League games, Ward said the plan is to have the majority of the team return for two home games next Wednesday, July 26 and Thursday, July 27 before the Bat Cats hit the playoffs. "We've never had trouble of picking up guys to fill out the roster when it came down to postseason," said Ward. "We're going to finish strong. We're going to be a good team. We're still hopeful of getting a couple of home games for the community before postseason." By winning the first half the Jayhawk League, Great Bend already qualified for the National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series in Wichita which starts Aug. 3. ⚾ Great Bend Bat Cats shutting down but intend on playoff return

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—NFL Hall of Famer&nbsp;and&nbsp;Heisman Trophy winner Tim Brown&nbsp;visited Kansas City today to introduce the ownership group of Kansas City’s newest professional sports team, the Kansas City Goats.

Tim Brown is the Commissioner of The Arena League, a rejuvenated arena football league set to start play in June of 2024. The Kansas City Goats will play home games at Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City.

The ownership group of the Kansas City Goats includes Chiefs Hall of Famer Christian Okoye, Gates BBQ COO George Gates and sports radio personality Steven St. John.

“The excitement bubbling around this team shows with such a great group of local owners stepping forward to lead this team. This group of individuals possesses all the attributes needed to successfully run a team, both on the field and off the field,” said Tim Brown.

The Arena League announced that Kansas City would be awarded a franchise in May. When Kansas City was announced, fans were asked to submit team name suggestions to the league.

Steven St. John announced the team’s chosen name.

“There were a lot of different ideas coming from the fans. As examples of suggestions that were sent in, we had the Kansas City Potholes, the Kansas City Kings, and the Kansas City Ribs. Of the thousands of suggestions sent in, one of them stood out,” said Steven St. John.

“We will be playing our games at Municipal Auditorium. Boss Tom Pendergast was responsible for pushing through the construction of that building. His faction was nicknamed the Goats. To pay homage to our home arena and to the history of Kansas City, we will be known as the Kansas City Goats,” said Steven St. John.

This group of individuals possesses all the attributes needed to successfully run a team, both on the field and off the field,” said Tim Brown.The Arena League announced that Kansas City would be awarded a franchise in May. When Kansas City was announced, fans were asked to submit team name suggestions to the league.Steven St. John announced the team’s chosen name.“There were a lot of different ideas coming from the fans. As examples of suggestions that were sent in, we had the Kansas City Potholes, the Kansas City Kings, and the Kansas City Ribs. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Matt Vierling capped a three-run eighth inning with a two-run double that lifted the Detroit Tigers over Kansas City 3-2 on Monday night and sent the Royals to their ninth loss in 11 games.

Taylor Clarke (1-4) gave up Akil Baddoo’s leadoff double, hit Riley Greene with a pitch with two outs and walked Spencer Torkelson.

“There was a lot of good in the last third of the game, offensively,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “There was a lot of good in the pitching department and our outfield defense was sensational.”

José Cuas relieved and walked Kerry Carpenter on four pitches, forcing in a run and ending Detroit’s 20-inning scoreless streak. Vierling sliced a sinker to the opposite field in right.

”The first couple of games in Seattle I hit the ball hard, had good at-bats,” Vierling said. “Talking to our hitting coaches about it, my process was good, swinging at the right pitches, so I knew something would happen at some point. Luckily it happened at that time.”

“I almost feel like we stole that win,” Vierling said. “That’s huge for us. Being able to win as many as we can, especially like that, I think it gives us a lot of confidence late in games.”

Brendan White (2-2) entered with two on and one out in the seventh and retired pinch-hitter Matt Duffy on a flyout and struck out Nicky Lopez.

Kansas City-area native Alex Lange struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 15th save in 18 chances.

“He’s very trustworthy,” Hinch said. “We’re going to give him the ball in important outings.”

Kansas City dropped to 27-68, last in the AL Central.

MJ Melendez, Freddy Fermin and Nick Pratto had consecutive singles in the fourth, the latter two driving in runs. Fermin had three of the Royals' six hits.

“He’s been swinging the bat well for the most part,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said.

Royals starter Jordan Lyles allowed three hits in six shutout innings.

“He had a really good changeup,” Quatraro said. “That was the best one of the year. Really flooded the zone, made them make decisions and the defense made plays behind him.”

Detroit’s Matt Manning gave up two runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings.

“I think I had really good command of all my pitches," Manning said. “I executed. I got ahead of guys, and that’s when I’m most effective.”

RHP Zack Greinke, placed on the 15-day IL on July 5 with right shoulder tendinitis, threw a bullpen session Sunday and is expected to return to the mound against the Tigers. “Everything was good yesterday,” Quatraro said. “We’re on track for him to make a start Thursday.”

Tigers LHP Tarik Skubal (0-0, 0.00) makes his third start of the season Tuesday, opposing Royals LHP Daniel Lynch (2-4, 4.18).

Dylan Carlson drove in the other two runs and scored three for the underachieving Cardinals, who have won six of eight but remain last in the NL Central. Miami has lost four straight.

ATLANTA (AP) — Ronald Acuña Jr. is on pace to do more than just join an elite 40-40 club in baseball history. The Braves outfielder is threatening to obliterate the previous high mark for power-speed combination in a season. Of the four players who have delivered seasons with at least 40 homers and 40 stolen bases, none accomplished the feat with more than 46 steals. Acuña is on pace for 41 homers and 77 steals. He could become the charter member of baseball’s 40-50, 40-60 and 40-70 clubs. Acuña’s 23 homers and 43 steals are big reasons the Braves boast the majors’ best record.

DALLAS (AP) — The name of the annual Texas-Oklahoma football matchup has been changed back to the Red River Rivalry, ditching the unpopular Red River Showdown used since 2014. Allstate was announced Monday as the new title sponsor of the game played every year at the Cotton Bowl amid the Texas State Fair in Dallas. The game was long known as the Red River Shootout before being changed to the Red River Rivalry in 2005. The rivalry dates to 1900 and this year’s meeting on Oct. 7 will be the 119th matchup between the Longhorns and Sooners.

NEW YORK (AP) — Past men's basketball national champions Baylor and Duke will meet at Madison Square Garden during the upcoming season. The December 20 game will be the first meeting between the two schools since an Elite Eight game in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Duke beat Baylor 78-71 in that South Regional final on way to the fourth of its five national championships. Baylor won its only national title two years ago. The Bears finished 23-11 and were 11th in the final AP Top 25 poll last season. Duke was 27-9 in coach Jon Scheyer’s first season and was ranked 12th.

UNDATED (AP) — The NCAA has announced it is creating another women’s basketball tournament that it will operate like the men’s NIT as a second option for 32 teams that do not make the NCAA Tournament. The Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament will debut in the upcoming season. It brings the men’s and women’s NCAA postseason opportunities to an equal number. An NCAA-operated second option for women was one of the key focuses of an external gender equity report on the NCAA. Women’s teams that didn’t make the NCAA Tournament in the past had the opportunity to play in an independently operated WNIT. The WNIT says the tournament will continue with 48 teams.

HOYLAKE, England (AP) — Cameron Smith never gets emotional about anything. That changed Monday when he had to return the claret jug as the defending British Open champion. Now it's about winning it back, and Smith knows that won't be easy. He says it's still hard to believe it's been a year since he won at St. Andrews. So much has changed, starting with his defection to LIV Golf. Golf is more chaotic than ever with the PGA Tour striking a deal lacking many details with Saudi Arabia's golf interests. Smith feels confident about LIV Golf's future. For now, he wants that jug back.

LOUDON, N.H. (AP) — Martin Truex Jr. mastered another Monday matinee to win at New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the first time in 30 career Cup races at the track. Joey Logano finished second. Kyle Larson, Kevin Harvick and Brad Keselowski rounded out the top five. Truex won his second Monday race of the season and fourth of his career. He dominated in the No. 19 Toyota en route to his third win of the season.

HAYSVILLE, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Monarchs scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning to come from behind and defeat the Haysville Aviators, 10-8 on Monday night, and take the series two games to one.

Will Edmunson led off the Monarchs ninth with a single and was one of 11 Hutchinson (13-14) batters to come to the plate in the inning. Brett Black pulled the Monarchs within one when he doubled home two runs to get within 8-7. Paris Pridgen then reached on an error that scored a run to tie the game at eight. Cal York and Hogan Shelby each drove in a run with RBI singles.

After Haysville (13-16) took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning, the Monarchs tied the game with three of their own in the fifth. Edmunson delivered with a single to pull within 3-1, and then Jaden Gustafson tied the game with a two-run triple.

The Monarchs scored one more in the sixth on an error to grab a 4-3 lead. The Aviators responded with three in the bottom half to go back in front, 6-4.

Edmunson led the Monarchs with a 4-for-6 night at the plate, while Gustafson and York each had a two-hit night. Gustafson and Black had a two RBI game. The Monarchs out-hit the Aviators, 12-6, while both teams had 10+ strikeouts (Hutchinson 14, Haysville 11).

Since 1991, The NCAA Woman of the Year program has recognized graduating female student-athletes for excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership throughout their college careers. A Norborne, Mo. native, McKinney earned her bachelor's degree in criminal justice in May from Wichita State. She is a three-time American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team member and an Easton/NFCA&nbsp;All-America Scholar Athlete. On the field, her numbers are well documented. She holds several career and single season records at Wichita State, while also racking up 378 career hits - fifth most in NCAA history. McKinney is currently in the midst of her first professional softball season with Athletes Unlimited. She was the No. 1 pick in the 2023 AU College Draft. 🥎 McKinney nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Head Coach Stanley Redwine announced the 2023 cross country schedule today, July 17, which includes one home event and six other events across five states.

The Jayhawks will kick off the season by hosting the annual Bob Timmons Cross Country Classic, hosted at Rim Rock Farms on Sept. 2. Last fall, the Kansas men claimed a first-place finish, led by Chandler Gibbens who is entering his senior season. The women placed second as a team, but Lona Latema raced to the best time in the event.

Following the Bob Timmons Classic, KU will head north to Lincoln, Nebraska to compete in the Woody Greeno/Jay Dirksen Invitational on Sept. 16. &nbsp;Last year, the men earned a podium finish as a team, placing third.

Rounding out the month of September, Kansas will travel to Columbia, Missouri to race in the Gans Creek Classic on Sept. 29. Gibbens again paced the way for the Jayhawks, finishing in second with a time of 23:39.1.

Next, Kansas will take its longest trip of the season as it travels to Charlottesville, Virginia to compete in the Pre-Nationals Invite on Oct. 14. On Oct. 28, KU will compete in the highly competitive Big 12 Championship, being held in Ames, Iowa this year. Last season, the men placed fifth while the women placed eighth.

Last fall, the Kansas men claimed a first-place finish, led by Chandler Gibbens who is entering his senior season. The women placed second as a team, but Lona Latema raced to the best time in the event.Following the Bob Timmons Classic, KU will head north to Lincoln, Nebraska to compete in the Woody Greeno/Jay Dirksen Invitational on Sept. 16. &nbsp;Last year, the men earned a podium finish as a team, placing third.Rounding out the month of September, Kansas will travel to Columbia, Missouri to race in the Gans Creek Classic on Sept. 29. Gibbens again paced the way for the Jayhawks, finishing in second with a time of 23:39.1.Next, Kansas will take its longest trip of the season as it travels to Charlottesville, Virginia to compete in the Pre-Nationals Invite on Oct. 14. On Oct. 28, KU will compete in the highly competitive Big 12 Championship, being held in Ames, Iowa this year. HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Monarchs defeated the Haysville Aviators 11-5 on Sunday evening at Hobart-Detter Field to even the series up at a game apiece. 

The game saw a 1:40 minute weather delay after the first inning.

The Monarchs avenged a 11-1 run-rule defeat on Saturday by pounding out 13 hits in the six-run victory.

Hutchinson (12-14) broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run third inning, highlighted by a two-run home run from HutchCC product and Arkansas Razorback signee, Will Edmunson. The Monarchs never surrendered the lead again.

After Haysville (13-15) scored two in the fifth inning to pull within one, the Monarchs responded with two of their own to extend the lead back to three. The Monarchs added three in the seventh and one in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

The Monarchs had four players with a multi-hit game, led by Hogan Shelby's 3-for-4 night with three RBI. Max Buettenback (2-for-5), Jaden Gustafson (2-for-3) and Drew Bugner (2-for-4) all joined in with two hits each.&nbsp;

The Aviators were led by Sam Wiese who finished with a 2-for-5 night.

Cole Toureau earned the win on the mound, going three innings after the game resumed play from the delay. Toureau was one of five pitchers used by the Monarchs in the game.&nbsp;

Pierce Levinthal suffered the loss for the Aviators, going three innings and allowing five runs on seven hits.

The two teams will close the series out tonight in Haysville at 7 p.m. The Monarchs return to Hobart-Detter Field on Wednesday to begin a three-game series against the Kansas Cannons with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans hope they've filled their major need at wide receiver with three-time All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. A person familiar with the agreement said Sunday the Titans have agreed on a two-year deal worth $26 million with incentives that could push that to $32 million. The Titans had the advantage of being the first NFL team Hopkins visited after his release by Arizona in May. The person confirmed the agreement to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Hopkins hasn't signed the contract. Hopkins would immediately boost a receiving group for a team whose head coach had more career NFL touchdown catches than anyone currently on the roster.

Fans roared as Curry hit the shot on the 152-yard par-3 seventh hole at Edgewood Tahoe, ripped off his hat, held a finger in the air and sprinted to the hole. The eight-point ace helped Curry maintain the lead in the modified Stableford event, three points ahead of Dallas Stars forward Joe Pavelski and former tennis player Mardy Fish. Players also receive a point for par, three for birdie and six for eagle and are deducted two points for double bogey or worse. Curry had 50 points after his 23-point round. The history of golf courses serving as a boardroom with grass is a lengthy one. Corporate executives and politicians have used the game as a chance to make deals and generate influence for years. That is unlikely to change after the stunning merger of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. If anything, some in and around the corporate world are looking to find ways to make sure the sport is more inclusive. Some schools are offering workshops on golf as a networking opportunity because they understand the doors that can be opened by being around the game at a corporate level.
