LOS ANGELES (AP) — Austin Barnes hit a solo shot in the eighth inning, helping the Los Angeles Dodgers win their 11th in a row with a 1-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. The NL West-leading Dodgers swept the NL Central leaders, outscoring them 14-3 in three games. The Dodgers earned their 12th shutout of the season. Lance Lynn dueled Brewers starter Corbin Burnes although neither figured in the decision. Burnes gave up two hits in seven innings, struck out nine and walked two. Barnes hit his first homer since last September and he also singled for his first multi-hit game of the season.

UNDATED (AP) — Stanford has not given up on getting an invitation to join the Atlantic Coast Conference as its fellow Pac-4 members wait and hope to rebuild their plundered league. Leaders from Stanford, California, Oregon State and Washington State spoke Thursday and Stanford told its colleagues it had informed the ACC that it would be open to joining the conference at greatly reduced or even no media rights payout for several years, a person familiar with the discussions told AP. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the schools’ were not making their internal discussions public.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The reunions of quarterbacks with coordinators at new schools could provide an offensive spark at places like No. 4 Alabama and North Carolina State. The Wolfpack brought in Brennan Armstrong as Virginia's all-time passing leader. He had thrived in his final season under new Wolfpack offensive coordinator Robert Anae. At Alabama, coordinator Tommy Rees and quarterback Tyler Buchner are together after spending last season at Notre Dame. Other schools with new playcaller-coordinator reunions this season include Pittsburgh and Louisville. At N.C. State, Armstrong says he's trying to be a “bridge” for his Wolfpack teammates in learning the new scheme.

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. (AP) — Rory McIlroy and Brian Harman share the lead at the BMW Championship at rain-soaked Olympia Fields. McIlroy is using that to his advantage. He also had a little magic on the 17th hole by going through trees and over a bunker and chipping in for birdie. Harman made two long birdies at the end. That includes a chip-in. UNDATED (AP) — Maximizing player rest and limiting travel demands were again part of the NBA’s formula for the coming regular season. That's what the league indicated Thursday when announcing the schedule for 2023-24. Teams have an average of 14 instances of back-to-back games this season, up slightly from last year’s rate of 13.3 per team. But back-to-backs involving travel are down to 9.0 on average. The rate of those last season was 9.6 per team. No team will play the day before or after high-profile national television games, such as Christmas matchups and all ABC weekend matchups.

WICHITA, KS - The Wind Surge rallied in the bottom of the ninth after being down all game and forced extra innings. Tanner Schobel was the hero of the game when he hit an RBI pinch hit single with the bases load in the bottom of the tenth for a walk off win. The Wind Surge defeated the Springfield Cardinals 7-6 and now lead the series three games to none. The Wind Surge have now won five games in a row.

The Cardinals were first to score in the ball game. L.J. Jones hit an RBI single on a sharp ground ball to left field and Victor Scott II hit a line drive to center field for a two RBI single in the top of the second. Springfield had earned themselves an early three run lead.

The Wind Surge started to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the third. Yoyner Fajardo hit a sacrifice fly deep into left field that was able to get a runner across home plate for Wichita.

In the top of the fourth Springfield got their three-run lead back when Scott II bunted a soft roller for an RBI single.

David Banuelos got active with the bat for the Wind Surge in his first game back after being activated off the injured list. He hit an RBI single on a line drive to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Cardinals’ lead was reduced to two runs.

Jones had his second RBI of the day for the Cardinals in the top of the fifth when he hit a sharp ground ball to left field for an RBI double.

Banuelos kept his bat going for the Wind Surge in the bottom of the seventh. He crushed a 429-foot solo home run that flew over the left field wall. The Cardinals’ lead was once again reduced to just two.

In the top of the eighth the Surge gave a run to the Cardinals when Jones was able to reach base on a throwing error to first and the runner scored from third. The unearned run extended the Cardinals lead back out to three.

Late game drama ensued in the bottom of the ninth. The Wind Surge were able to tie the ball game up after Aaron Sabato came in to pinch hit for a two RBI double and Dalton Shuffield hit a clutch two-out RBI single.

Schobel came into the ball game in the bottom of the tenth to pinch hit with the bases loaded. He hit a line drive to center field for an RBI single and the walk-off win.

Travis Adams made his 15th start of the season on the mound for the Wichita Wind Surge. He pitched three and a third innings where he gave up four runs off six hits. He struck out two batters and walked two more. Miguel Rodriguez earned the win, and his record improves to (1-1).

The starting pitcher for Springfield was Brandon Komar. He pitched five and two thirds innings where he gave up two runs off five hits. He struck out one batter and walked three more. Nick Trogrilic-Iverson was credited with the loss.

The Wichita Wind Surge improve to (22-20, 50-60) and the Springfield Cardinals fall to (20-22, 54-57).

⚾ Wind Surge come from behind walk-off win keeps streak alive

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Mariners had just squandered another opportunity on the basepaths, and seen their lead against the Royals disappear, when Julio Rodriguez stepped to the plate with two runners aboard in the eighth inning Thursday.

George Kirby knew something special was about to happen.

The Mariners' starting pitcher, whose day on the mound had long been done, proceeded to watch the 22-year-old All-Star rip the first pitch he saw from Kansas City reliever Carlos Hernandez over the left-field bullpen. The homer gave Rodriguez a career-best five hits to go with five RBIs and, more importantly, lifted the streaking Mariners to a 6-4 series-ending win that left them a half-game back of Toronto for the third AL wild card.

“Thank God for Julio,” Kirby said with a smirk, before adding: “I'd have hated to be the opposing pitcher this week.”

Rodriguez had 12 hits in the four-game set, setting a franchise record for any series, and joined some elite company in several ways: He's the fourth Mariners player with at least four hits in back-to-back games, the fifth player in club history with a five-hit, five-RBI game, and the first Seattle player with at least 20 homers in each of his first two seasons.

Oh, and to go with all those homers, Rodriguez already has 30 stolen bases this season. That puts him alongside Alex Rodriguez, Mike Cameron and Ruppert Jones as the only Mariners players in the 20-30 club.

“That's absolutely as good as you can do in this league,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said. “I don't care who you're facing.”

Cal Raleigh homered for the second straight game in the ninth inning to give Seattle's bullpen some breathing room, though it hardly needed it. Isaiah Campbell (3-0) earned the win with a scoreless seventh, Trent Thornton tossed a perfect eighth and Matt Brash breezed through the ninth to pick up his fourth save.

Carlos Hernandez (1-8) took the loss when Rodriguez pounded the first pitch he threw to left field.

“That's a great hitter,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “Put a pretty good swing on a good fastball.”

Nelson Velazquez homered for the fourth time in seven games since his arrival in a trade to Kansas City. MJ Melendez, Michael Massey and Freddy Fermin also drove in runs for the Royals during a fitting finish to a wacky series.

Each team had a player thrown out at the plate Thursday. Another was cut down on the basepaths, one was picked off first base and Seattle had a runner called out after inexplicably starting back to the dugout when an outfielder dropped his fly ball.

Velazquez's homer in the fourth tied the game 1-all, but the Mariners pulled back ahead as the chaos began in the sixth.

Royals reliever Max Castillo walked the first two batters and Rodriguez followed by scorching a liner to left. The ball cleared Melendez, who had misjudged its angle of approach, and wound up at the outfield wall. Cade Marlow scored easily but Dominic Canzone, who had entered as a pinch hitter, was thrown out trying to score from first.

Maikel Garcia was thrown out at the plate on Witt's double in the bottom of the inning, though the Royals' offense kept rolling. Massey tied the game with a single, Melendez atoned for his mistake with a go-ahead double and Fermin added a sacrifice fly — with the inning coming to a close when Melendez was thrown out at third base.

The biggest baserunning blunder came in the seventh, though.

Dylan Moore hit a flyball that Melendez raced in and laid out to catch. Moore thought he got it cleanly and, after touching first base, turned around and headed for the Seattle dugout. But the ball actually had bounced out of Melendez's glove, and he threw to first base, where the umpires ruled that Moore had given himself up.

“We screwed up. I'll be honest with you,” Servais said. “We need to tighten that up. There's no doubt about it.”

Fortunately for the Mariners, Rodriguez was there to rescue them one more time with his no-doubt shot the very next inning.

“Today was about Julio,” Servais said. “We're all real heavy on his back right now.”

Mariners: RHP Eduard Bazardo was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma and RHP Ryder Ryan was optioned to the same club. Bazardo was acquired from the Orioles on Aug. 1 for minor leaguer Logan Rinehart.

Royals: Kowar was recalled from Triple-A Omaha for the fourth time and RHP James McArthur optioned to the same club.

Mariners: RHP Bryan Woo (forearm inflammation) threw a bullpen session before the game. Servais said if all goes well, Woo would be activated around the time he is eligible to come off the injury list on Aug. 20.

Royals: 1B Nick Pratto (left groin strain) planned to begin a rehab assignment with Omaha on Thursday night. ... LHP Jake Brentz (elbow surgery) got two outs in his rehab assignment at the Arizona Complex League on Wednesday night. It was the first time Brentz had pitched since April 29, 2022.

Mariners RHP Bryce Miller (7-4, 4.04 ERA) starts the opener of a three-game series in Houston on Friday night.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas junior wide receiver Lawrence Arnold has been named to the watch list for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, which recognizes the nation’s outstanding Division I college offensive player who was either born in Texas, graduated from a Texas high school or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.

From DeSoto, Texas, Arnold enters his junior season at Kansas after graduating from DeSoto High School in the class of 2020. He has amassed 69 receptions for 958 yards and seven touchdowns during his time at Kansas, including a career-best 44 receptions last season. Arnold led the Jayhawks with 716 receiving yards, including three 100-yard receiving games, and he capped off the season with career-highs of eight receptions and 119 receiving yards in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl against Arkansas. Arnold has previously earned Preseason All-Big 12 recognition from Athlon and Phil Steele, who both selected him as a fourth team selection.

ABU DHABI, U.A.E. -- Paul Stoll's free throws with 11.7 seconds left in the fourth quarter proved to be difference, as Team Mexico held on late to knock off Kansas State, 83-81, in an exhibition game on Thursday night (August 17) at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. It was the Wildcats' second exhibition game of their historic 10-day trip to Israel and Abu Dhabi, which began Wednesday, August 9 and runs until Sunday, August 20.

Team Mexico, which is in Abu Dhabi training for the FIBA World Cup in Manila, The Philippines at the end of the month, used a pivotal 7-0 run to rally from a 4-point deficit midway through the final quarter to take an 80-76 lead with under 2 minutes to play. However, K-State took advantage of a pair of technicals from Mexico’s&nbsp;Israel Gutierrez&nbsp;(with graduate transfer&nbsp;Tylor Perry&nbsp;making both free throws) followed by a 3-pointer from Perry to regain the lead at 81-80 with 38.6 seconds remaining. The Mexicans tied it at 81-all on a free throw with 27.9 seconds left before Stoll’s game-winning free throws a few seconds later. The Wildcats had one more chance with 11.7 seconds remaining but could not convert.

Team Mexico is rated 31st&nbsp;in the world in the latest FIBA World Rankings.

Perry led all scorers with 18 points, as he went 5-of-10 from beyond the arc and 3-of-4 from the free throw line, to go with team-tying 3 assists before fouling out with just under 30 seconds to play. Three other Wildcats scored in double figures, including 15 from senior&nbsp;Nae’Qwan Tomlin, 11 from junior&nbsp;Cam Carter&nbsp;and 10 from freshman&nbsp;Macaleab Rich. Tomlin and redshirt sophomore&nbsp;Jerrell Colbert&nbsp;each grabbed a game-tying 7 rebounds.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Team Mexico was led by&nbsp;Gael Bonilla, who scored 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting to go with 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals in playing all 40 minutes. Bonilla currently plays for the NBA G-League’s Mexico City Capitanes. Fellow G-Leaguer and Capitanes’ teammate&nbsp;Moises Andriassi&nbsp;had 16 points off the bench, including 4 3-pointers.

K-State is now 72-21 all-time in exhibition play dating back to the first such competitions in 1964, including 28-14 against international competition. This was the first meeting with a team from Mexico. The current international tour is the program’s first since 2016 when the Wildcats played 5 exhibition games in Italy and Switzerland.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

K-State will make a quick turnaround on Friday (August 18) when the Wildcats play their third and final game against Sharjah at 4 a.m., CT/1 p.m., local time in Abu Dhabi. On the game… “This was exactly what our staff wanted. We wanted to be able to play all 10 guys, and try to balance the minutes. And we knew that Mexico had a really good team, so we were going to find out a lot about our guys today. There was one spurt where it was, TP (Tylor Perry), RJ (Jones), Quan (Tomlin), Cam (Carter) and Jerrell (Colbert) and I thought we looked pretty good. And so right now, we don't need to look 40 minutes good. But it was good to see spurts of what it could be like. And I couldn't have asked for anything better, except for, maybe not turning it over as much as we did and not having, TP (Tylor Perry) and Quan (Tomlin) at the end of game. But it put other guys in situations that maybe they don't have to be in during the season. They're going to be able to revert back to this and know what to what not to do with that.”

On the growth of the freshmen… “I love their growth. I mean, Buddy (Macaleab Rich), we started him today because we wanted to get him more minutes. And he really gave us a lot to start the game. And then like most freshmen late in the game, his body kind of cramped up on him and, and so conditioning and some more experience will help with that. Both RJ (Jones) and Dai Dai (Ames), they did a great job and I was really pleased what they did defensively more than what they did offensively.”

Team Mexico shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57), including 33.3 percent (9-of-27) from long range, and 73.3 percent (22-of-30) from the line.

The Mexicans held a 30-26 advantage in the paint, while the Wildcats took advantage of their 11 offensive rebounds to post a 19-4 edge in second-chance points.

The Blue Dragon Athletic Department has announced its five themes for the five home games for Blue Dragon football.

🏈 HutchCC releases themes for Blue Dragon home games

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs plan to play Patrick Mahomes and the rest of their starters for the first half of their preseason game in Arizona, where they were last seen walking off the field hoisting their second Lombardi Trophy in four years.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said upon wrapping up training camp at Missouri Western on Thursday that the starters would get the first half and backups would split the second half. That's in line with what Reid has done since the league trimmed the preseason to three games and is designed to help Mahomes and the rest of his guys get ready for the speed of the regular season.

“They have to get ready for the game,” Reid said ahead of Saturday night's game against the Cardinals, “and at the same time, I think it's tough going into the first game — the first regular-season game. It's going to be fast, much faster than you can present in practice. So this is at least another step up from that, another kick up speed-wise to the game.”

Mahomes and the starters played only one series in their preseason opener in New Orleans, putting together a promising drive that ultimately stalled near midfield on a failed fourth-and-short conversion attempt. The second preseason game is closer to a dress rehearsal for their Sept. 7 opener against Detroit, which is why Mahomes will play into the second quarter.

Nevertheless, Reid acknowledged a balancing act between preparing for the season and the risk of injury in a preseason game.

“That's all part of the game," he said.

The Chiefs need look no further than last season's playoffs for proof that injuries can happen suddenly.

Mahomes was twisted to the turf in the divisional round against Jacksonville, sustaining a high ankle sprain that he had to manage the rest of their Super Bowl run; he even aggravated it in the championship win over Philadelphia, limping through most of the second half.

Even if Mahomes doesn't necessarily need the preseason reps, the rest of the Chiefs offense probably does.

They allowed both of their starting offensive tackles to leave in free agency, and Jawaan Taylor and Donovan Smith are still getting comfortable as the replacements. They also lost veteran wide receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman, which means the Chiefs could lean heavily on two players yet to take a regular-season snap in Rashee Rice and Justyn Ross.

“I thought those guys got better and better (in camp),” Mahomes said of his wide receivers Thursday. “They learned how to finish and keep that mentality throughout practice. They have a lot of talent but you have to learn how to be consistent every day, and I thought they got better and better at that as they went.”

Mahomes also was pleased with the way Taylor and Smith have worked with perhaps the league's best interior offensive line, anchored by Pro Bowl center Creed Humphrey with guards Joe Thuney and Trey Smith on either side of him.

“The offensive line did a great job throughout camp just battling,” Mahomes said.

Mahomes was asked Thursday how he would feel stepping on the field in Arizona, where the Chiefs rallied to beat the Eagles in February. But in typical fashion, Mahomes preferred to talk about what the Chiefs must do to get back to the Super Bowl, rather than look back on winning his second championship ring.

“We have a lot of stuff we have to continue to work on,” Mahomes said. “I said it after the ring ceremony, ‘That’s it.' We're going to go back and try to get another one.”

NOTES: Reid said the Chiefs have checked on the playing surface in Arizona, which has a history of problems, and were told that “it's gripping well.” Chiefs DB Trent McDuffie and K Harrison Butker were hurt playing their regular-season opener on the same field last season. ... Chiefs DT Chris Jones continued his holdout through the entire portion of camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, getting fined $50,000 for each day he has missed. “When he gets in,” Reid said, “he's going to have to get caught up.” ... 🏈 Mahomes, other starters to play first half in preseason game Saturday

The Kansas City Chiefs concluded their 13th year of training camp in St. Joseph Thursday with a short, 10-10-10 practice at Missouri Western.

The Chiefs came down the hill an hour earlier than normal at 8 a.m. and worked for just over an hour in half pads.

Head coach Andy Reid has overseen 10 training camps in St. Joseph and was once again very complimentary of Missouri Western's hospitality.

That, and the energy of Chiefs' Kingdom, who sat out in the heat for the last three weeks just to watch practice.

"Thanks to Missouri Western State University here, man," Reid said. "They've been tremendous again for us. Treating us well, feeding us well and the hospitality is second to none."

"And the fans coming out here. They've been incredible every day."

The Chiefs had 19 total training camp practices in St. Joseph since July 23.

There was no official injury report after Thursday's practice. Kadarius Toney (knee), Nikko Remigio (shoulder), Nic Jones (hand), L'Jarius Sneed (knee), Chris Jones and Turk Wharton (knee) didn't practice.

Nick Allegretti (shoulder) was present, but didn't work. Receiver Kekoa Crawford was absent Thursday, but a Chiefs spokesperson said it wasn't due to an injury.

Tight end Jody Forston, who's on injured reserve, revealed on social media Wednesday that he has undergone a successful shoulder surgery.

Kansas City now turns its attention toward their second preseason game at Arizona, which comes up this Saturday at 7 p.m. Coach Reid says the starters will play most of the first half, with the "twos and threes" rotating in the second half.

Patrick Mahomes says he wants the first-team players to get off to a better start than they did this past Sunday when the Saints raced out to a 17-0 lead.

"I just think having a better urgency from the get-go and throughout the entire game," he said. "Not necessarily (about) the result, you obviously want to win, but you want to have that mentality throughout the entire game."

Overall, Mahomes says it was a productive camp for their unit and the entire team.

"We improved on a lot of stuff," he said. "We didn't add a lot of receivers, but getting those new receivers in and flying around. Those guys here for a second year, you could see the improvements in how they practice. I thought it was a good camp. Offense, defense, special teams. We just flew around and competed every day, which is what you always want."

"You started this foundation," Reid said, recounting his final message to the team as camp adjourned.

"This is where it starts. You're building this thing as it goes up. Every week is different. Every day is different in this thing. But, you've accomplished some things here that will help carry you through during the season in a positive way."

(AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs plan to play Patrick Mahomes and the rest of their starters for the first half of their preseason game in Arizona, where they were last seen walking off the field hoisting their second Lombardi Trophy in four years.Chiefs coach Andy Reid said upon wrapping up training camp at Missouri Western on Thursday that the starters would get the first half and backups would split the second half. That's in line with what Reid has done since the league trimmed the preseason to three games and is designed to help Mahomes and the rest of his guys get ready for the speed of the regular season.“They have to get ready for the game,” Reid said ahead of Saturday night's game against the Cardinals, “and at the same time, I think it's tough going into the first game — the first regular-season game. It's going to be fast, much faster than you can present in practice. So this is at least another step up from that, another kick up speed-wise to the game.”Mahomes and the starters played only one series in their preseason opener in New Orleans, putting together a promising drive that ultimately stalled near midfield on a failed fourth-and-short conversion attempt. The second preseason game is closer to a dress rehearsal for their Sept. 7 opener against Detroit, which is why Mahomes will play into the second quarter.Nevertheless, Reid acknowledged a balancing act between preparing for the season and the risk of injury in a preseason game.“That's all part of the game," he said.The Chiefs need look no further than last season's playoffs for proof that injuries can happen suddenly.Mahomes was twisted to the turf in the divisional round against Jacksonville, sustaining a high ankle sprain that he had to manage the rest of their Super Bowl run; he even aggravated it in the championship win over Philadelphia, limping through most of the second half.Even if Mahomes doesn't necessarily need the preseason reps, the rest of the Chiefs offense probably does.They allowed both of their starting offensive tackles to leave in free agency, and Jawaan Taylor and Donovan Smith are still getting comfortable as the replacements. They also lost veteran wide receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman, which means the Chiefs could lean heavily on two players yet to take a regular-season snap in Rashee Rice and Justyn Ross.“I thought those guys got better and better (in camp),” Mahomes said of his wide receivers Thursday. “They learned how to finish and keep that mentality throughout practice. U.S. women's national team coach Vlatko Andonovski has resigned, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The move comes less than two weeks after the Americans were knocked out of the Women's World Cup earlier than ever before. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the move has not been officially announced. The four-time tournament champions struggled throughout this World Cup. The Americans played well in the Round of 16 against Sweden, but ultimately fell on penalties after a scoreless tie. The U.S. scored just four goals over the course of the tournament. The United States had never finished worse that third in the tournament.

Detmers takes no-hitter into 8th inning, Ohtani hits 42nd homer as Angels beat Rangers 2-0

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Angels left-hander Reid Detmers took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and two-way star Shohei Ohtani hit his 42nd home run as Los Angeles beat the AL West-leading Texas Rangers 2-0. The Rangers got their first hit Wednesday when Marcus Semien lined a double into the left-center gap with one out in the eighth on the 108th and final pitch by Detmers. Reynaldo Lopez and Carlos Estevez finished off the Angels' eighth shutout this season. Ohtani, the designated hitter whose turn in the starting rotation this week was skipped because of arm fatigue, went the opposite way for a 437-foot homer to left-center in the first inning off Jon Gray.

Colorado coach Deion Sanders gets hackles up over some of his players not joining in fight at camp

MASON, Ohio (AP) — Novak Djokovic had a short night in his first singles match in the U.S. since 2021, beating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Western &amp; Southern Open after the Spaniard retired early in the second set with a lower back injury. The second-ranked Djokovic won the first set 6-4, then two points into the second set, Davidovich Fokina hunched over in pain following his return and ended the match after 46 minutes. Djokovic, 36, lost in doubles on Tuesday in his return to the country after missing events because of COVID-19 vaccine restrictions.

Yormark: Big 12 had conversations with UConn, Gonzaga but is done expanding

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark says his conference is done expanding, shutting down the possibility of adding UConn and Gonzaga after engaging with the basketball powerhouses on potential membership. Less than two weeks after the Big 12 announced Pac-12 schools will switch leagues and join the conference next year, Yormark appeared on the "Marchand and Ourand Sports Media Podcast" and revealed other potential moves. WASHINGTON (AP) — The ranking Democrat on the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Reform is asking the Republican chair in charge to refer former Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder to the Department of Justice for lying under oath. Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin wrote a letter Wednesday to Kentucky Rep. James Comer urging him to send Snyder's case to the DOJ to determine if Snyder should be prosecuted for making false statements in his deposition and obstructing a congressional investigation. Raskin pointed to the results of the NFL's independent review that contradicted Snyder's testimony. The league fined Snyder $60 million for sexual harassment and financial improprieties last month as part of his sale of the team.

Devastated Tuohys ready to end conservatorship for Michael Oher, lawyers say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A lawyer for a prominent Memphis couple with a longstanding relationship to former NFL player Michael Oher says that they want to end a conservatorship that he's challenging in court. Lawyer Randall Fishman says Wednesday that Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy intend to enter into a consent order to end the conservatorship. Oher filed a petition Monday in Tennessee accusing the Tuohys of lying to him by having him sign papers making them his conservators. Oher, now 37, wants a full accounting of assets. He says he received nothing from the Oscar-nominated movie "The Blind Side." The Tuohys have called the allegations ridiculous and part of a shakedown attempt.

Cuba welcomed at Little League World Series and holds Japan to a run but gets no-hit in 1-0 loss

SOUTH WILIAMSPORT, Pa, (AP) — A long way from home and playing in its first Little League World Series game ever, Cuba allowed just one hit Wednesday, but got no-hit in a 1-0 loss to Japan in an opening round game. The Cuban team received a polite reception from the nearly 8,000 people in Volunteer Stadium, typical of the appreciation international teams receive at the LLWS. But the Cubans didn't have many true fans. As Japanese players embraced their parents after the win, manager Vladimir Vargas said no families of players made the trip directly from Cuba to South Williamsport for the game and the players had only teammates for support.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Teoscar Hernandez hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the eighth inning and the Seattle Mariners beat the Kansas City Royals 6-5 on Wednesday night.

Julio Rodriguez had four hits for Seattle, including a ninth-inning single that provided an insurance run the Mariners wound up needing. Cal Raleigh added a home run and a double.

“Obviously Julio had a huge night for us,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said. “Probably the most impressive thing he did for us was take the (single) into right field in the ninth inning. We needed all the insurance runs we could get. That proved to be the winning run in the ballgame.”

Dylan Moore opened the eighth by reaching on an error and came around to score on Hernandez's fly to make it 5-4. The ball ended up close to the tarp down the right-field line, and Moore knew he was going.

“It was foul, so I was definitely tagging no matter what,” Moore said. “The closer it got to the tarp, I thought it might be a weird angle. It was definitely shallow, but I thought he might have to jump or get out of the way of something.”

Luis Castillo (9-7) allowed four runs on nine hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out three.

“It was a really good effort by Luis Castillo,” Servais said. “He knew we needed him to get deep in the game. It took him a while to kind of get into his stuff, but we've seen that from Luis once in a while. He did find it and was able to get through seven.”

Matt Brash picked up his third save despite allowing Nelson Velazquez's homer in the ninth.

Dylan Coleman (0-1) took the loss for Kansas City. James McArthur, who made his first major league start as the opener for the Royals, allowed three runs on three hits in one inning.

The Mariners wasted no time in foiling the Royals' opener plan. Rodriguez led off with a double to the gap in right-center. He scored on Ty France's single, and France scored on Raleigh's two-run homer. Castillo had a three-run lead before he threw his first pitch.

Maikel Garcia extended his Royals rookie-record hitting streak to 18 games with a double on the first pitch from Castillo. It's the longest active streak in the majors. Garcia went to third on a groundout by Bobby Witt Jr. and scored on a sacrifice fly by Michael Massey.

The Mariners answered the Royals' run with another in the second. Rodriguez drove home Jose Caballero with a single.

The Royals got another run in the second on a sacrifice fly, this one by Kyle Isbel, scoring Drew Waters, who led off the inning with a triple. They drew within one in the third on a two-out double by MJ Melendez, scoring Salvador Perez from first.

“We weren't able to produce big numbers, but overall we did a good job,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said of his offense. “They had good at-bats right from the get-go. I was really pleased.”

The Royals loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth, but they only got the tying run. Velazquez grounded into a double play to squash the rally.

Mariners: C Tom Murphy was placed on the 10-day Injured List with a left thumb sprain, retroactive to Aug. 14. In a corresponding move, the Mariners selected C Brian O’Keefe from Triple-A Tacoma.

Royals: RHP Nick Wittgren was optioned to Triple-A Omaha following last night's game. RHP John McMillon was selected from Double-A Northwest Arkansas. The Royals also transferred RHP Brad Keller to 60-day Injured List.

The Mariners and Royals will compete their four-game series with a Thursday matinee. Seattle will send RHP George Kirby (10-8, 3.32 ERA) to the mound. Kansas City will counter with LHP Angel Zerpa (1-1, 7.71 ERA).
