The Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team accomplished a feat that hadn’t been done since 2014 in its final game of the BSN Sports Tip-Off Classic at the Sports Arena.&nbsp;

Freshman Hailey Jackson and sophomores Monae Duffy and Bree Horyna all posted double-doubles to lead the Blue Dragons to a huge 82-43 victory over NEO.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons improved to 2-0 with two dominant wins on opening weekend. Hutchinson plays host to Neosho County&nbsp;at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday&nbsp;at the Sports Arena.&nbsp;

The trio of double-doubles by Jackson, Duffy and Horyna was the first time that has happened in a game since Cynthia Petke, Kalani Purcell and Clemence LeFevre first accomplished that feat against College of Eastern Utah on December 29, 2014 in Las Vegas.&nbsp;

Jackson finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. She was 5 of 8 shooting from the floor and 5 of 6 from the foul line. &nbsp;

Duffy posted her 12th career double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Duffy was 6 of 9 shooting and 2 of 3 from the free-throw line.&nbsp;

Horyna’s first career double-double came with 11 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Horyna was 5 of 8 shooting with a 3-pointer. All 11 points for Horyna came in the fourth quarter.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons shot 43.3 percent from the field for the game (29 of 67), hitting 4 of 17 from the 3-point line and 20 of 29 from the foul like. The Blue Dragons were 15 of 33 (45.4 percent) in the first half in building a 43-19 lead at halftime.&nbsp;

Kiki Smith and Akaysha Muggeridge also scored in double figures for the Blue Dragons with 10 points each.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons out-rebounded NEO 63-29. The 63 rebounds are the seventh-most in Blue Dragon single-team history. &nbsp;

NEO was held to 27.4 percent shooting (17 of 63). The Lady Norse were 5 of 18 from the 3-point line and 4 of 14 from the free-throw line. NEO committed 16 turnovers.&nbsp;

After two early lead changes, the Blue Dragons went on a 11-2 run that was capped by Journey Armstead’s layup for a 13-4 led with&nbsp;4:37&nbsp;to play in the first quarter. NEO stopped that run with a Hiba Malkawi 3-pointer, but the Dragons answered that with an 8-0 run to close the first quarter. Duffy’s putback bucket to close the quarter gave Hutchinson a 23-7 lead after 10 minutes.&nbsp;

The Dragons increased that run to start the second quarter to 15-0 on baskets from Duffy, Armstead and a Jackson three-point play to lead 28-7 with&nbsp;8:22&nbsp;to play in the second quarter. Smith’s free throws with&nbsp;2:04&nbsp;left upped the Dragon lead to 27 at 41-14. NEO scored the final five points of the half to trail Hutchinson 41-19 at halftime.&nbsp;

Hutchinson outscored NEO 41-24 in the second half. Their largest lead of the game was the final margin of victory at 39 when Horyna completed her double-double with a layup with 16 seconds to play in the fourth quarter.&nbsp;

Connor Stalions, the low-level Michigan football staffer who is at the center of an NCAA investigation into impermissible scouting of opponents and sign stealing, has resigned. He had been suspended with pay two weeks ago. An AP source says Stalions failed to show up for a scheduled hearing Friday and informed the school he would not participate in any investigations. Michigan is under NCAA investigation for the alleged scheme.

World Series MVP Seager takes swipe at rival as Rangers celebrate 1st title with huge parade

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Hundreds of thousands Texas Rangers fans lined up and stacked dozens deep in some areas along a 2-mile route near the team's ballpark for a parade Friday to celebrate the franchise's first World Series championship. The parade Friday came two days after the Rangers wrapped up the World Series with a Game 5 win on the road against the Arizona Diamondbacks. World Series MVP Corey Seager even took a swipe at the Houston Astros, the team that won the AL West but that the Rangers beat in the AL Championship Series. Arlington fire officials say the crowd estimate was 400,000 to 700,000 fans.

Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw undergoes shoulder surgery, says he hopes to return next summer

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw has undergone left shoulder surgery and anticipated being sidelined until next summer.. The 35-year-old posted on social media that the surgery was to repair the glenohumeral ligaments and his shoulder capsule. Kershaw wrote that he hopes to return to play "at some point next summer." He was sidelined for six weeks by the shoulder injury and it hampered him over the final couple months of the season. Neither Kershaw nor the Dodgers ever said much about his shoulder. He got lit up by Arizona in the NL Division Series, tagged for six runs before getting an out in the first inning of the worst start of his career.

DENVER (AP) — Nikola Jokic finished an assist shy of a triple-double and the Denver Nuggets held off the Dallas Mavericks 125-114 on Friday night to open the NBA's inaugural In-Season Tournament. Jokic had 33 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists. He was 14 of 16 from the field, Michael Porter Jr. scored 24 points, and Jamal Murray had 18 points and 13 assists for the NBA champion Nuggets, who led by 20 points in the third quarter before seeing Dallas trim it to eight late in the game. Jokic made a cutting layup with 1:11 remaining to seal it. The Mavericks lost for the first time this season. Luka Doncic finished with 34 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists but also had nine turnovers.

Gauff will face her good friend and doubles partner Jessica Pegula in the semifinals. The other semifinal Saturday in Cancun, Mexico, will be No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka vs. No. 2 Iga Swiatek. Gauff took five of the match's last six games to improve to 2-1 at the season-ending championship. Swiatek won their group by going 3-0, finishing with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ons Jabeur. Sabalenka defeated Elena Rybakina 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team overcame an early nine-point deficit to earn their 16th consecutive opening-night victory on Friday night top open the BSN Sports Tip-off Classic.

Six players scored in double figures as Hutchinson rallied to defeat North Idaho College 91-82.

Hutchinson (1-0) meets No. 23 NEO (0-1) in the final game of the BSN Classic at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. North Idaho will play No. 18 Barton at 3 p.m.

The Blue Dragons trailed 28-19 with 8:31 to play in the opening half. Hutchinson's offense got untracked by outscoring 23-8 over the final 8 minutes to lead 42-36 at halftime. Hutchinson then trailed 43-42 with 16:17 to play in the second half. The Dragons took the lead for good when&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/thomas_kamryn_j9zm">Kamryn Thomas</a>&nbsp;– a transfer from North Idaho – hit a 3-pointer to give the Blue Dragons the lead for good, ultimately building a double-figure lead in the game's final minute.

The Blue Dragons shot 41.5 percent from the field (34 of 82). Hutchinson finished 12 of 37 from the 3-point line, hitting 7 of its final 13 attempts from long range. The Dragons were 11 of 25 from the free-throw line. Hutchinson had 18 turnovers.

J.P. Ricks and Thomas had 14 points each to lead six Blue Dragons in double figures. Both Ricks and Thomas had three 3-point goals each. Ricks had eight assists in his Blue Dragon debut.

Austin Johnson and Vaughn Weems scored 16 points each to lead North Idaho.

The early stages of the first half had five lead changes. Trailing 17-14, a Simon 3-pointer with 11:39 to play tied the game at 17-all. The Cardinals then went on an 8-0 run over the next 2 minutes, 8 seconds to lead 25-17 after a Weems putback hoop with 9:31 remaining.

Tayshawn Colvin gave North Idaho its largest lead of nine points with a 3-pointer for a 28-19 lead with 8:31 to go in the half.

Trailing 30-24, the Blue Dragons grabbed the lead with a quick 9-0 run. Weathers' transition dunk with 3:56 tie the game and Hutchinson took a 33-30 lead on a Thomas 3-pointer with 3:03 to go in the half. The Dragons built a 40-34 lead with 40 seconds to go on a Bundy fastbreak hoop.

North Idaho scored the first seven points of the second half over the first 1:43 of the period for a 43-42 lead. Thomas' 3-point jumper on the next Hutchinson possession gave the Dragons a 45-43 lead. Another Thomas 3-pointer pushed the lead to 48-43 with 17:39 to play.

North Idaho grabbed three one-point leads, the third coming at 73-72 with 4:44 to play in the game. Tied at 75-all with 3:54 to go, the Blue Dragons closed the game with a 16-7 run.

The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team started its 50th season with a dominant performance against Eastern Oklahoma State in the BSN Sports Tip-Off Classic on Friday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons won their eighth-straight season opener after an 87-56 victory over the Mountaineers in the 2023-24 season opener.

Hutchinson (1-0) plays NEO (0-1) at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. No. 20 Barton (1-0) plays Eastern Oklahoma State (0-1) at 1 p.m.

🏀 WBB: Season No. 50 starts with Blue Dragon win over EOSC

MAIZE, Kan. — It was a tale of two dominant quarters on Friday night at Maize South High School. 

Hutch High had the dominant second quarter, outscoring the Mavericks 20-7 in the second period for a 13-point halftime lead. 

Maize South had the dominant third period, scoring two touchdowns to take a 21-20 lead after three quarters, but then both teams battled all the way through the fourth and Maize South made just enough plays to hold on to their one point lead and advance to play Kapaun Mt. Carmel in the next round of the Class 5A playoffs.

There was no way to know this at the time, but the missed extra point following Hutch High's first touchdown with 11:27 to go in the first half would end up being their undoing.&nbsp;

Hutch had rushing scores from Kade Smith, Robert Hunter and Skyler Graham in the second quarter.

Maize South's Tate McNew threw for a late second quarter score, then added another touchdown pass with 5:11 to go in the third and then executed a perfect naked bootleg run with 27 seconds left in the third to tie the game and a Sam Parks extra point gave the Mavericks the lead that they held on to.

Hutch High ends their season at 7-3. Maize South improves to 8-2 and will play Kapaun Mt. Carmel who won over Great Bend 36-34 Friday.

Hutch High had the dominant second quarter, outscoring the Mavericks 20-7 in the second period for a 13-point halftime lead. Maize South had the dominant third period, scoring two touchdowns to take a 21-20 lead after three quarters, but then both teams battled all the way through the fourth and Maize South made just enough plays to hold on to their one point lead and advance to play Kapaun Mt. Carmel in the next round of the Class 5A playoffs.There was no way to know this at the time, but the missed extra point following Hutch High's first touchdown with 11:27 to go in the first half would end up being their undoing.&nbsp;Hutch had rushing scores from Kade Smith, Robert Hunter and Skyler Graham in the second quarter.Maize South's Tate McNew threw for a late second quarter score, then added another touchdown pass with 5:11 to go in the third and then executed a perfect naked bootleg run with 27 seconds left in the third to tie the game and a Sam Parks extra point gave the Mavericks the lead that they held on to.Hutch High ends their season at 7-3. Maize South improves to 8-2 and will play Kapaun Mt. Carmel who won over Great Bend 36-34 Friday.

The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College football team goes after a fourth-consecutive Jayhawk Conference championship on Saturday.&nbsp;

In order to clinch the 11th overall league title, the Blue Dragons (8-0, 5-0 KJCCC) will travel to play the Independence Pirates (3-5, 1-3) at 1 p.m. at Emmot Field in Independence.&nbsp;

The game will be streamed live and free on the Blue Dragon Sports Network beginning at 12:30 p.m. with Countdown to Kickoff. The game will also be broadcast of Blue Dragon Flagship Station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5).&nbsp;

Hutchinson enters the game coming off two defensive struggles - a 27-18 victory over Garden City on October 21 and a 13-0 triumph at Highland last Saturday to run their Jayhawk Conference winning streak to 13 games in league designated games and 17 straight overall when postseason games are added.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragon defense didn’t allow a point for the second time this season - Hutchinson beat Iowa Central 27-2 - liming the Scotties to 131 total yards. The Dragon defense had three takeaways, including two interceptions from Ryan Nolan.&nbsp;

The Pirates blitzed Ellsworth two weeks ago. The Pirates has season highs for points scored and threw for 252 of their 302 total-yardage output. Defensively, Independence held Ellsworth to four first downs and nine total yards of offense.&nbsp;

Hutchinson will be playing another top nationally ranked defense in the Pirates this season. Independence leads the KJCCC and is second in the NJCAA in rushing defense allowing 49.4 rushing yards per game.&nbsp;

In fact, the last four opponents on Hutchinson’s schedule - Garden City, Highland, Independence and Iowa Western next week - along with the Blue Dragons take five spots in the NJCAA team Rushing defense Top 6 (Kilgore is the only non-KJCCC team in that list).&nbsp;

One year ago, the Blue Dragons had the exact same scenario with a chance to clinch an outright KJCCC title heading into the Independence game. The Dragons passed that test with a resounding 53-0 victory over the Pirates at Gowans Stadium.&nbsp;

🏈🎥 WATCH: Nov. 4 KJCCC, KCAC, MIAA schedule

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If you think you have heard a new voice on the KWBW Morning Show since February or on both Hutch High and HutchCC football games, you would be correct.

Newton native Sean Boston is the newest addition to the Eagle Media Hutchinson team of sportscasters and will make his debut tonight calling the action of the HutchCC Blue Dragons as they open the 2023-24 basketball season versus Eastern Oklahoma State College.

Boston joined the Eagle Media Hutch sportscast team this past February, accepting the Assistant Sports Director/Account Executive position.

"It's time to wind down a little," Glen Grunwald, radio voice of the Blue Dragons, said. "I started calling games for Hutch at the beginning of the 1998-1999 season, assisting Rusty Hilst with football and doing the play-by-play for basketball that fall." Grunwald has called more than 3,000 sporting events since he began sports broadcasting as a hobby in 1985 at KANS in Larned. 

"My college roommate, Dennis Franz, owned KANS and asked me to step in and do color for their play-by-play guy for football," Grunwald said.

"Little did I know that, by basketball season, that gentleman would be moving away and I was tossed the ball to start doing play-by-play for the rest of the sports season," Grunwald chuckled.

Ironically, Larned's basketball coach was Kevin Abbott, who lives just around the corner from Grunwald in Hutchinson.

In 1990, the Barton County Cougars came calling and Grunwald started calling their basketball and national volleyball tournament runs until Dan Deming gave him a call and talked him into making the switchover to Hutchinson in the summer of 1998.

So 38 seasons later, 26 as the voice of the Blue Dragons, the time has come to transition to the future.

"Hutchinson has always had great sportscasters. Go way back to Tom Hedrick, who got his start with KWBW in the late '50s. Gary Bender, John Rooney, Hod Humiston, Bob Watson, Jerry Kershaw, and, most recently, Rusty Hilst," Grunwald added. "I'm so proud to be part of that great group of local sportscasters."

"Sean will do a great job. We've been talking about this being a possibility for about three-years-plus. He is a great young man that has called the Hutchinson broadcast job a 'dream job.' I'm looking forward to watch him grow and prosper and couldn't be more proud of how he has embraced the position," Grunwald said.

Boston has a vast history behind the mic for being so young. The Halstead High School and Butler Community College graduate called a state championship football season for Bishop Carroll just a few years ago. He served as an intern with the KJCCC office, helping with a number of events. He has also called arena football in both Wichita and Dodge City, and was part of the Dodge City broadcast team for both Dodge City High and Dodge City Community College for 3 1/2 years. In addition to all that, he had a short stint with Eagle Media Hays in 2022.

"Sean recently got married (to Liz Reifschneider) and became a new dad when he adopted Liz's two young boys, so he is happy to make the Hutchinson area home," Grunwald added.

"It's truly an honor to be a part of the Blue Dragon broadcast crew," Boston said. "I've always had tremendous respect for HutchCC athletics and am looking forward to this opportunity. The passion that the city of Hutchinson and the surrounding areas have for Blue Dragon athletics is truly one-of-a-kind."

Both Boston and Grunwald will continue to provide broadcast coverage for the NJCAA volleyball and basketball championships when they take place in the Sports Arena.

Grunwald will continue to call Hutch High athletics for at least another year with his good friend, Dan Naccarato. Naccarato will assist Boston and Grunwald with the home Blue Dragon games, while Daren Dunn will continue to assist on the road.

"I think the transition will be great. I thank HutchCC Athletic Director Josh Gooch for allowing me to make this transition and continue this year behind the mic. Special thanks to all the fans that have made the past 26 years so very, very special," Grunwald said.

Glen Grunwald isn't going away, he will still continue to call HutchCC men's basketball who also open the season versus North Idaho at the Sports Arena Friday night. Grunwald will only call the home games for the men, while Boston will call the road women's and men's contests.

Twenty win seasons are normally the magic marker for a successful season for college basketball teams.

Finishing 20-12 last season, the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team felt like it underachieved and look to an almost entirely new cast of players to make its run for third-year head coach Tommy DeSalme.

"I'm really excited for this season," said DeSalme, who is 45-21 in his first two seasons on the Blue Dragon bench. "I think we have a team that has lots of room for growth and is versatile."

The all-time NJCAA leader in program victories with 1,894 opens its 92nd season on Friday with North Idaho in the BSN Sports Tip-Off Classic at 7:30 p.m. at the Sports Arena.

The 2022-23 Blue Dragons were the second-highest scoring team in the NJCAA last season at 97.2 points per game. Leading scorer Aaron Franklin, the Jayhawk Conference's leading scorer from last season, moved onto Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Returning players for DeSalme this season are guards&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/bundy_kernan_hvu2">Kernan Bundy</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/wagler_landon_xlpj">Landon Wagler</a>&nbsp;and forward&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/weathers_dadrevius_3k80">Dadrevius Weathers</a>.

Bundy (6-foot-3, 190, Overland Park) started in 29 of 32 games last season and is the leading returning scorer. Bundy averaged 9.1 points per game while shooting 37.2 percent overall and 29.1 percent from 3-point range. He had a career-high 28 with five 3-pointers against Northwest Tech last season.

Wagler (6-5, 200, Lenexa) battled through injuries in his freshman season and played in 24 games. The fourth-generation Blue Dragon averaged 1.3 points in 4.0 minutes per game.

Weathers (6-7, 180, Phenix City, Alabama) threw down some show-stopping dunks in his freshman season. He averaged 5.8 points per game in just under 10 minutes played per game.

"We have three strong returners," DeSalme said. "All three of those guys have put in hard work and improved and I look for great seasons by them."

The Dragons have xx transfers added to the mix this season.

"There are lots of new faces," DeSalme said.

"I'm looking forward to watching our lead guard group (Ricks, Holman, Branch and Smith). They all have the ability to play the pace offensively and defensively that we need to have for success.

"We have lots of hybrid players who can play guard and forward positions (Thomas, Whitney, Adeoye, Simon and Daniel). Thomas and Simon are transfers who give us some experience. Daniel and Simon and Thomas can all play well with back to basket as well."

The Blue Dragons were picked to finish sixth in the Jayhawk Conference preseason coaches' poll.

🏀 MBB: Blue Dragons look for rebound season in 2023-24

Ever since John Ontjes took over the Hutchinson Community College women's basketball program before the 2007-08 season, one thing has always been a constant entering each and every season.

The 2023-24 Blue Dragon women face those same lofty hopes as the season opens Friday with the Eastern Oklahoma State Mountaineers in the BSN Sports Tip-Off Classic at 5:30 p.m. at the Sports Arena. Hutchinson plays NEO at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons are picked to finish second behind Butler in the preseason Jayhawk Conference Coaches' Poll, but are unranked in the NJCAA national preseason rankings.

One of the reasons for the lack of national attention was the way Hutchinson ended the 2022-23 season. The Blue Dragons were stung 73-68 by Coffeyville in the quarterfinal round of the Region VI Tournament, ending last season with a 23-8 record. The Dragons were 17-7 in the KJCCC last season and finished fourth.

Ontjes, who has built a 446-96 record in his first 16 seasons at Hutchinson, returns four players from last season, including two starters.

First-team All-KJCCC forward&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/duffy_monae_og8s">Monae Duffy</a>&nbsp;(6'0, Lafayette, LA) is the leading returning scorer for Hutchinson. Last season, Duffy averaged 13.1 points per game and shot 48.1 percent from the field. She ranked third in the KJCCC in rebounding at 8.7 boards per contest.

Duffy had nine double-doubles last season with season highs of 25 points against Northwest Tech and 21 rebounds against Independence. Duffy had two of the top five all-time single-game rebound marks last season.

Sophomore point guard&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/armstead_journey_w1mg">Journey Armstead</a>&nbsp;(5'8, Tulsa, OK) was fifth in the Jayhawk Conference last season in assists, averaging 4.1 assists (141 total assists). Armstead averaged 9.6 points per game and looks to improve her shooting percentage from 33.1 percent overall and 20.1 percent from 3-point range.

Armstead had two 10 assist games last season and eight games of seven or more assists.

A pair of in-state players round out the group of returning Blue Dragons.

Forward&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/horyna_bree_rg28">Bree Horyna</a>&nbsp;played in all 31 games, starting two. The 5'10 forward from Liberal averaged 2.4 points and 2.9 rebounds. Five-7 guard&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/mccormick_brynn_gver">Brynn McCormick</a>&nbsp;played 13 games and averaged 1.7 points per game. She shot 28.6 percent from 3-point range.

The Blue Dragons look to improve an offense that struggled at times in 2022-23. Last season, the Dragons averaged 71.3 points while shooting 39.9 percent overall and 28.9 percent from 3-point range. Defensively, the Dragons allowed 59.2 points per game with opponents shooting 28.9 percent.

Ontjes welcomes two transfers into the program this season.

Mosley appeared in 12 games for the Lions as a guard off the bench while averaging 2.6 points, 0.9 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 0.3 steals in 5.2 minutes per game.

Guard&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/muggeridge_akaysha_rpaz">Akaysha Muggeridge</a>&nbsp;(5'9, Rockhampton, Australia) was at Sacramento State University last season. She appeared in six games last season.

Five freshman also join the Blue Dragons this season. Guard&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/smith_kiki_x1vf">Kiki Smith</a>&nbsp;(5'7, Topeka) was a highly south in-state prospect. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Kenny Pickett threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Diontae Johnson with 4:02 remaining and the Pittsburgh Steelers slipped past the Tennesee Titans 20-16. The Steelers (5-3) bounced back from a dismal loss to Jacksonville by doing what they've done fairly regularly this season: hung around long enough to pull it out in the end.
