MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Tameiya Sadler scored all 10 of her points in the second half to lead a balanced scoring attack and No. 5 seed Colorado beat four-seed Kansas State 63-50 on Sunday to advance to the Sweet 16.

The Buffaloes (24-9) will face the winner of Monday's game between No. 1 seed Iowa and No. 8 seed West Virginia Saturday in Albany, N.Y.

This was the first home sellout for Kansas State since they hosted No. 1 UConn on Dec. 11, 2016.

Colorado, which had six players with nine or more points, used an 11-2 run in the third quarter to grab its largest lead of the game at 48-41. The Buffaloes outscored K-State 19-7 in the third quarter to take a 52-42 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats (26-8) had multiple chances to trim the deficit to three in the fourth quarter, but couldn't get the shots to fall.

Gabby Gregory scored 12 points to lead Kansas State. Ayoka Lee added 10 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks.

Neither team could grab control in the first half. The first quarter ended with the score tied at 14. Kansas State used an 8-0 run early in the second quarter to open a 22-15 advantage, the largest by either team to that point.

Serena Sundell hit a 3-pointer later in the quarter and sank an accompanying free throw to give K-State a 33-24 lead. But Colorado responded with a 9-0 run to tie the game at 33-33.

Colorado: The Buffaloes were not intimidated by the partisan crowd. Every time K-State grabbed the momentum and the crowd got louder, the Buffs responded.

Kansas State: The Wildcats will be totally different next year without Lee, who anchors the middle on offense and defense. With 13 assists, K-State set a school record for assists in a season with (631). And with eight blocks, the Wildcats established a school record for blocks in a season 178.

Colorado: The Buffaloes will go to Albany to play the winner of Monday's game between No. 1 seed Iowa and No. 8 West Virginia.

Kansas State: The Wildcats are done for the season.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— The Cowley Tigers scored 58 points in the paint to Allegany Maryland's 14 for a win in the first round of the tournament. No. 9 Cowley beat the No. 24 seed Allegany Maryland Trojans 87-64 on Sunday afternoon.&nbsp;

Sophomore forward Jeff Nwankwo scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for Cowley. Sophomore guard Arzhonte Dallas scored 19 points, dished out five assists and had five steals.&nbsp;

Sophomore guard Jason Thomas scored 16 points for Allegany.&nbsp;

At halftime, Cowley led Allegany 39-24 and maintained their lead through the second. Cowley shot 50% from the field, 30% from the 3-point line and 57.1% from the free throw line.&nbsp;

Four players from Walters State scored in double figures. Sophomore forward Ramondo Battle led the Senators with 26 points. Battle scored 14 in the first. Freshman guard Terrance Jacobs scored 12 points and dished out seven assists.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Sophomore guard Kylin Green scored 17 points. for Daytona State. Sophomore guard Josue Grullon had 16 points.&nbsp;

Walters and Daytona were tied up 39-39 with a little over 1:30 remaining in the first. Dayton led 42-41 at halftime.

Battle picked up his third foul six minutes into the second half. He picked up another late in the second. Six other players from Walters roster also got into foul trouble.&nbsp;

Daytona State led 66-65 with eight minutes left in the game. Despite being in foul trouble, Walters State took back the lead and gained momentum for a 10 point lead (79-69) with a little over four minutes to go.&nbsp;

Walter's Jaylen Wharton fouled out late in the second half. Daytona made it a 3-point game with 27.5 seconds left on the clock but ultimately came up short.&nbsp;

Longtime Baltimore Orioles owner Peter Angelos dies at 94

BALTIMORE (AP) — Longtime Baltimore Orioles owner Peter Angelos has died at the age of 94. His family announced in a statement that Angelos, who had been ill for several years, died Saturday. Angelos was owner of an Orioles team that endured long losing stretches and shrewd proprietor of a law firm that won high-profile cases against industry titans such as tobacco giant Philip Morris. Angelos' death comes as his son, John, is in the process of selling the Orioles to a group headed by Carlyle Group Inc. co-founder David Rubenstein. Peter Angelos purchased the team for $173 million in 1993, at the time the highest for a sports franchise. His public role diminished significantly in his final years.

Carlos Sainz wins F1 Australian GP after Verstappen retires early with engine fire

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Ferrari's Carlos Sainz ended Red Bull's Formula 1 winning streak when the Spaniard took advantage of Max Verstappen's early retirement to win the Australian Grand Prix just two weeks after missing the previous race in Saudi Arabia due to an emergency appendectomy. Sainz, who started on the front row alongside Verstappen, kept his place into turn one, but passed the Dutchman on lap two at turn nine for the lead and took control once his rival retired two laps later with a fiery mechanical failure. Verstappen had won the first two F1 races of the season in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Sainz led home teammate Charles Leclerc for Ferrari's first 1-2 finish since the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix, with McLaren's Lando Norris finishing in third for his first podium at Albert Park.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Gonzaga played a nearly perfect second half, busting open a back-and-forth game with a 15-0 run Saturday to pull away from Kansas for an 89-68 win and extend its nation-best streak of trips to the Sweet 16 to nine.

Anton Watson shot 8 for 11 for 21 points on an afternoon when basically everyone in a navy jersey was a star, especially after halftime.

The fifth-seeded Zags (27-7) made their first five 3-pointers of the second half, not missing from long range until 1:30 remained and the game had long entered extended garbage time.

Mark Few's team will make its regular trip to the second weekend to play the winner of Sunday's game between Purdue and Utah State.

Nolan Hickman finished with 17 points for the Zags, and big man Graham Ike had 15 points and nine rebounds, going toe to toe with KU’s Hunter Dickinson, who finished with a quiet 15 points. Making all the Bulldogs look good was Ryan Nembhard, who blew off a rough shooting night (1 for 6) and finished with 12 assists.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Zakiyah Franklin scored 22 points, including&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/MarchMadnessWBB/status/1771627653616865626">a tying 3-pointer that bounced on the rim and dropped</a>&nbsp;with 12 seconds left in regulation, and Kansas beat Michigan 81-72 in overtime in the first round of the women's NCAA Tournament on Saturday.

“My coach said you must be living right,” Franklin said, grinning.

Wyvette Mayberry and S'Mya Nichols added 15 points each and Taiyanna Jackson had 14 points and eight rebounds for the eighth-seeded Jayhawks (20-12).

“March is about getting everyone's best basketball,” Nichols said. “It was exciting, back and forth, not easy.”

The Jayhawks rallied in the fourth quarter, when they outscored the Wolverines 23-14. Then Kansas stepped up its defense and controlled the five-minute extra session, 14-5.

“They never fragmented,” Kansas coach Brandon Schneider said. “They just stayed the course and made some really big plays that were preceded by stop after stop.”

Lauren Hansen's 3-pointer pulled the Wolverines within 75-72. Franklin missed, but the 6-foot-6 Jackson grabbed the rebound. Nichols scored and drew the foul, extending the Jayhawks' lead to 78-72.

Franklin stole the ball with 22 seconds left and Nichols got fouled and made both.

After Franklin's tying 3-pointer, Hansen's potential game-winning 3 missed for Michigan.

The Jayhawks got within 65-62 on a free throw by Jackson. With Kansas pressuring and the shot clock winding down, Phelia raced in for a layup that extended Michigan's lead to 67-62.

SURPRISE, Ariz.—The Kansas City Royals and Bally Sports Kansas City today announced the team’s 2024 regular season television schedule, with all 162 games airing regionally or nationally.

The doubleheader sweep was the first since the Salthawks swept Wichita West in the 2021 season.

Hutchinson (2-1) won game one, 6-1, before completing the sweep with a 10-7 come-from-behind win in game two.

The Salthawks will travel to Wichita to face McPherson in a doubleheader on Tuesday at Riverfront Stadium, home of the Wichita Wind Surge.

The Greenbacks travel to Great Bend for a doubleheader on Saturday.

GAME 1: Hutchinson 6, Pratt 1 Juju Lyons pitched 4 1/3 strong innings on the mound to earn the win, while allowing four hits and striking out two.&nbsp;

Hutchinson tied the game with a four-run third inning thanks to four Pratt errors. The Salthawks' only hit in the inning was a single by Beavers.

Cole Bleything gave the Salthawks a 6-4 lead in the fifth inning with a two-run double over the right fielders head, scoring Franz and Beavers.

Pratt answered right back with a three-run inning, as four straight Greenbacks reached to start the inning. The Greenbacks led 7-6 heading to the sixth inning.

Hutchinson tied the game on an RBI double by Parks in the sixth inning that scored Jack Davis.

The Salthawks then scored three in the top of the seventh inning, including a big RBI double by Gabe Valadez and an RBI single by Morgan. The Pratt defense struggled once again, committing two errors in the inning to help lead to a Salthawk run.

Morgan shut the door in the bottom of the seventh inning on the mound, including catching a comebacker to double-off a Greenback at first. He would earn the win, tossing three innings of shutout baseball.

Parks (2 for 5, RBI) and Beavers (3 for 4) each had a multi-hit game for the Salthawks offense. Hutchinson pounded out a season-high 12 hits in the win.

SAO PAULO (AP) — Former soccer star Robinho has started serving a nine-year prison sentence in his native Brazil more than 10 years after he was first accused of raping a woman in Italy. The 40-year-old Robinho left his apartment building in the beachfront city of Santos, outside Sao Paulo, in a black police car after losing a bid to remain free pending appeals. A Brazilian high court ruled Wednesday that Robinho must serve his sentence in his home nation as a result of his 2017 rape conviction in Italy.

NFL retirees who say the league's disability plan is a sham can proceed to trial

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A judge says a federal lawsuit against the NFL's disability plan can proceed to trial. The potential class action on behalf of retired players accuses the league of routinely denying valid injury claims so that it won't have to make disability payments. The judge said the plan's six-member board will remain as defendants but she's removed individual board members and Commissioner Roger Goodell. The lawsuit says the disability board favors doctors who are more likely to deny claims. It says one neuropsychologist who was paid more than $800,000 examined 29 former players and found none were disabled. An NFL spokesman didn't immediately comment on Thursday.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Nicolas Timberlake of Kansas swears he got fouled. If he did, Samford’s A.J. Staton-McCray insisted, then “I guess Casper hit him.”

The fourth-seeded Jayhawks took advantage of what looked like a phantom foul in the waning seconds Thursday night that set up two key free throws by Timberlake for a 93-89 victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The 13th-seeded Bulldogs used their frenetic press and deep bench to trim a 22-point deficit to one with less than a minute left. They were trapping KU in the backcourt when Timberlake took a long pass in stride as he was streaking toward the basket.

As he went up to dunk, Staton-McCray came from behind and blocked the shot, appearing to touch nothing but ball.

The whistle blew and Timberlake calmly made both free throws with 14.7 seconds left to help Bill Self's team push the lead to three and set up a second-round meeting against Gonzaga.

“I was definitely fouled on the breakaway,” Timberlake said.

 </figure>SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Nicolas Timberlake of Kansas swears he got fouled. If he did, Samford’s A.J. Staton-McCray insisted, then “I guess Casper hit him.”The fourth-seeded Jayhawks took advantage of what looked like a phantom foul in the waning seconds Thursday night that set up two key free throws by Timberlake for a 93-89 victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.The 13th-seeded Bulldogs used their frenetic press and deep bench to trim a 22-point deficit to one with less than a minute left. They were trapping KU in the backcourt when Timberlake took a long pass in stride as he was streaking toward the basket.As he went up to dunk, Staton-McCray came from behind and blocked the shot, appearing to touch nothing but ball.The whistle blew and Timberlake calmly made both free throws with 14.7 seconds left to help Bill Self's team push the lead to three and set up a second-round meeting against Gonzaga.“I was definitely fouled on the breakaway,” Timberlake said.Well, maybe not, according to Staton-McCray.“I feel like it was a great play by me,” he said “Terrible call.”The debate will play out for about a day back in Lawrence, where bigger things await, but will linger longer in Birmingham, where tiny Samford, champion of the Southern Conference, was denied the first tournament victory in program history.“I thought A.J. made an incredible play, you know what I’m saying?” Samford coach Bucky McMillan said. “I’m not faulting the call. You can see it different ways. But I was really proud of our guys’ ability to go make a play.”The call certainly didn't detract from the game Hunter Dickinson had for Kansas.Playing with a sleeve on to protect his recently dislocated right shoulder, the KU center finished with 19 points, 20 rebounds and four blocks. KJ Adams Jr., led the Jayhawks with 20 points, while Timberlake finished with 19 after his two game-deciding free throws.Self’s team came into the tournament slumping — a popular pick to go down early without leading scorer Kevin McCullar Jr. (knee) and having lost four of its last five.The Jayhawks play on. But the Kansas coach wouldn't play into the good call-bad call debate.“I thought Nic attacked the basket well,” Self said. “He’s a much better athlete than what a lot of people think. He attacked it strong, just like he should.”That he had legs left to do that was a feat, given the way Samford played fullcourt basketball for 40 minutes, slowly wearing down a KU rotation that had essentially been reduced to six players.Achor Achor had 23 points and eight rebounds for Samford, including a tomahawk jam with 38 seconds that cut the Bulldog deficit to two.Dickinson then hit Adams with a long pass for a dunk, but Jaden Campbell (18 points) answered with a 3-pointer for the Bulldogs to set up the crazy finish.Kansas, and the refs, walked off the court to lusty boos from the rowdy Samford contingent, many of whom stuck around, calling up replays of the foul call on their phones.The Jayhawks won this game, but they were forced to do it Samford’s way. The Bulldogs rushed Kansas into tying its season high with 18 turnovers.The tradeoff was that Kansas shot 60% from the floor and made this look like a dunk contest at times. Of KU's 35 field goals, 14 were layups and eight were slamsThe biggest shot, though, was the one that didn’t go in by Timberlake.“I’m not blaming the whistle (but) if there is no whistle, we’re going to have the numbers advantage going the other way to advance to round two,” McMillan said. "That’s how close the game was and that’s how well our guys played when we were down 22.”UP NEXTThe first tipoff Saturday in Salt Lake City will be at 10:45 a.m. local time between Arizona and Dayton, with the Kansas-Gonzaga matchup to follow. This will mark the third matchup between the programs; they split the last two.MYSTERY TECHA technical foul on the Samford bench gave Kansas two easy points in the first half that turned out to be important in a game this close. Samford officials said they weren't told which coach was slapped with the ‘T,’ which was officially charged to the bench.
