KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals announced today that they have acquired right-handed pitcher&nbsp;Colin Selby&nbsp;from the Pittsburgh Pirates for minor league left-handed pitcher&nbsp;Connor Oliver. Selby, 26, was designated for assignment last Tuesday and has been assigned to Triple-A Omaha.

In a corresponding move, left-handed pitcher&nbsp;Josh Taylor&nbsp;has been transferred to the 60-day Injured List.

Selby made his Major League debut with Pittsburgh last Aug. 9 and spent the rest of the season in the Majors, were he recorded 30 strikeouts in 24.0 innings (11.3 K/9) over 21 appearances (including 5 as the opener). He began the 2023 season in Triple-A Indianapolis, where he recorded 6 saves and a 3.86 ERA (13 ER in 30.1 IP) with 41 strikeouts (12.2 K/9).

He was selected by Pittsburgh in the 16th round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft out of Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va. In parts of six seasons in the minors, he owns a 3.49 ERA (102 ER in 263.1 IP) and .209 opponents’ average with 280 strikeouts (9.6 K/9).

Oliver, 22, was selected by Kansas City in the 17th round of the 2023 First-Year Player Draft and appeared in 1 game with the ACL Royals in August.

He had a go-ahead, eight-inning single on Friday and a tiebreaking, seventh-inning homer on Saturday.

“Obviously, a little bit of luck right there," Melendez said. "I’m just thankful that I’m able to help do something to help the team win. It’s just pretty crazy.”

Kansas City added a run when Kyle Isbel reached on what was scored on an infield hit when reliever Dominic Leone failed to catch the throw to first from second baseman Lenyn Sosa.

John Schreiber (1-0) pitched a one-hit seventh and James McArthur got three outs for his second save as Kansas City completed its first four-game sweep since 2021.

Dominic Fletcher hit an RBI double in the fourth off Alec Marsh and scored on Braden Shewmake’s sacrifice fly, just the third multi-run inning of the season for the White Sox.

Center fielder Dominic Fletcher appeared to tip the ball as it struck the top of the fence, sending it over for Melendez's second homer of the year and second in three games.

"I really didn't think anyone would be able to get it out that far, with that wind," Fletcher said. "Going back, I jumped up, felt it hit my glove, but wasn't quite sure if it hit the wall first. Just going hard, trying to make a play. It was an unfortunate break for us."

After the game, White Sox manager Pedro Grifol acknowledged he should have asked for a crew chief review on whether the ball hit the wall first, which would have made it a ground-rule double.

"From our angle it looked like the ball hit the glove and went out," Grifol said. "So, I didn't go out there. But after looking at it, I should have."

Maikel Garcia knocked in another run with an infield single as Kansas City batted around in the inning.

Flexen (0-2) permitted a pair of singles to start the first, then retired 12 straight. He gave up three runs on six hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings, his longest outing since July 4, 2022.

Both starters worked quickly; the first five innings were played in 57 minutes.

Nick Anderson allowed one hit in the eighth and Chris Stratton completed the three-hitter for his first save since July 19 last year with St. Louis.

Garcia and Bobby Witt Jr. each had a pair of singles for Kansas City (5-4), which climbed above .500 for the first time since April 9, 2022.

Chicago (1-7) was shut out for the third time already this season. The White Sox have 13 runs, their fewest through eight games since scoring only eight in 1968.

"We couldn't get anything going offensively," Grifol said. "There's some urgency. A 1-7 start's not good."

White Sox OF Luis Robert Jr. was placed on the 10-day injured list with a Grade 2 right hip flexor strain.

Chicago recalled INF Lenyn Sosa from Triple-A Charlotte and traded RHP Alex Speas to Oakland for cash.

⚾ Melendez’s 2-run homer backs Wacha in Royals' 3-0 shutout over White Sox

Former HutchCC Blue Dragon football standout Cordarrelle Patterson has signed with the Steelers. Patterson played for HutchCC 2010-2012 as well as ran track in 2012 before transferring to Tennessee.

The Steelers signed running back/kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson to a two-year contract.

Patterson, who is entering his 12th season, is a four-time Associated Press First Team All-Pro selection (2013, 2016, 2019, 2020) and a two-time AP Second Team All-Pro selection (2015, 2018) as a returner. He was also selected to the Pro Bowl four times (2013, 2016, 2019, 2020).

Patterson's honors don't stop there. He was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Month twice (Sept. 2013, Nov. 2019), NFL Special Teams Player of the Week twice (Week 8 of 2013, Week 11 of 2022), NFC Offensive Player of the Week (Week 3 of 2022) and selected to the NFL All-Rookie Team in 2013.

In addition, he was voted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame All-2010s team as a kick returner.

Patterson holds the NFL record for most kickoff returns for a touchdown with nine. He also led the NFL in kickoff return average three times, and twice led the league in kickoff return yardage.

Patterson was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, the 29th overall selection. He spent four seasons with the Vikings, before signing with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2017. He was traded to the New England Patriots in 2018, then signed with the Chicago Bears in 2019, where he spent two seasons. Patterson spent the last three years with the Atlanta Falcons, where Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith was the head coach.

Patterson has 273 career kickoff returns for 7,989 yards, a 29.3-yard average, with nine touchdowns. He has a career-long 109-yard touchdown return his rookie season, as well as five other 100-plus yard returns for touchdowns in his career. Patterson is ranked second among qualified returners in NFL history with a 29.8 kickoff return average, behind only Pro Football Hall of Famer Gale Sayers (30.8).

WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita Wind Surge won 13-3 from Riverfront Stadium against the Frisco RoughRiders on Saturday, April 6. The win gives Wichita their first win of the 2024 MiLB Season and a 1-1 record on the young campaign.

Aaron Zavala struck first for Frisco on an RBI single against Wind Surge starter&nbsp;Travis Adams&nbsp;in the top of the third. The following batter Liam Hicks doubled the RoughRiders advantage to 2-0 on a sacrifice fly the next at-bat.

In the bottom of the third, Wichita brought four runs to the plate to match their total from the previous night.&nbsp;Emmanuel Rodriguez&nbsp;started with an RBI single to score&nbsp;Kyler Fedko. Rodriguez later scored alongside&nbsp;Alerick Soularie&nbsp;on a two-run double by&nbsp;Tanner Schobel&nbsp;off the base of the left center field wall.&nbsp;Kala’i Rosario&nbsp;then worked an RBI single to bring home Schobel.

While four runs in a half-inning is a solid feat, the Wind Surge topped that with five more in the last of the fourth.&nbsp;Andrew Cossetti&nbsp;floated a two-RBI single to shallow center field.&nbsp;Ben Ross&nbsp;singled in Cossetti, and then Ross scored alongside Rosario on a two-run line drive back up the middle to make the score 7-2 Wind Surge.

Schobel pushed his RBI tally on the night to three with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. Frisco also found their third run in the top of the sixth when Zavala came in on a balk by Wind Surge reliever&nbsp;Taylor Floyd.

For the cherry on top for Wichita, Kala’i Rosario hit a three-run home run just over the wall in right field in the bottom of the eighth inning to push the game to an eventual 13-3 final. Adams earned the win after five innings of one-hit baseball with four strikeouts.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — MJ Melendez broke an eighth-inning tie with a single to help the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 2-1 on Friday night.

In the ninth inning, Luis Robert Jr. doubled down the left-field line with one out, pulling up lame at second with a left hip flexor injury. Robert suffered a similar injury in 2021, missing over three months of the season.

James McArthur entered the game with the tying run at second and induced an ending double-play grounder for his first save.

“It was a hard-fought game,” White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said. “We really didn’t get much going until the later innings. We had a couple of opportunities to do something and didn’t capitalize.”

The Royals opened the scoring in the first inning on the first of Salvador Pérez’s three hits, a two-out RBI double off the top of the wall in center. Pérez is tied for second in the American League with nine RBIs.

Melendez, Pérez, and Bobby Witt Jr. rank among AL leaders in slugging, homers, and OPS.

“Last season, I faced immense pressure to perform at the plate, which affected my mental preparation” Melendez said. “I made adjustments in the second half of the season and worked on my swing during the offseason.”

Gavin Sheets tied it with a leadoff homer in the second, lifting starter Brady Singer’s slider 391 feet down the line in right.

After the homer, Singer retired the next 15 hitters consecutively on 48 pitches, striking out four and getting nine ground balls.

“We made a lot of quick outs,” Grifol said. “Got to give credit to Singer. He was really pounding the strike zone, keeping the ball down (with) heavy sink. He was a ground-ball machine today.”

Singer faced two more than the minimum in completing 6 1/3 innings, while allowing a run on two hits and one walk with four strikeouts.

Royals starters lead the majors with seven quality starts.

White Sox starter Erick Fedde worked five innings, allowing a run on six hits and two walks, with four strikeouts. He exited in the sixth after allowing a leadoff hit to Pérez and a walk to Melendez.

Reliever John Brebbia retired the next two batters, leaving after injuring his right calf while fielding a soft grounder. Steven Wilson struck out Hunter Renfroe to end the threat, stranding a runner at third.

Chicago has played five one-run games, losing four.

White Sox OF Eloy Jiménez was placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Tuesday because of a left adductor strain.

Clark was honored Thursday as The Associated Press women's basketball Player of the Year. She received 34 votes from the 36-member national media panel that votes on the AP Top 25 each week. Cameron Brink of Stanford received the other vote.

Chiefs' Rashee Rice was driving Lamborghini in Dallas chain-reaction crash, his attorney says

DALLAS (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs' player Rashee Rice's attorney says the wide receiver was the driver of one of two speeding sports cars who left after causing a chain-reaction crash on a Dallas highway over the weekend. Attorney and state Sen. Royce West says Thursday that the reason Rice left Saturday's crash was under investigation and he declined to elaborate. West spoke at a news conference without Rice. West said that Rice was driving the Lamborghini sport utility vehicle that was involved in the crash. He also said the other speeding sports car belongs to Rice, but no information has been released on the driver.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The Athletics will leave Oakland after this season and play temporarily at a minor league park near Sacramento until their planned new stadium in Las Vegas is built. The A's announced the decision to play at the home of the Sacramento River Cats from 2025-27 with an option for 2028 after being unable to reach an agreement to extend their lease in Oakland. The A's announced their intention last April to move to Las Vegas. The decision angered the fans in Oakland and the team's previously low attendance dropped precipitously with the club drawing a league-low 832,352 fans to the outdated Coliseum last season.

Vingegaard has collapsed lung after crash in Basque Country race. Tour de France defense is in doubt

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Two-time defending Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard remains hospitalized in Spain a day after he broke his collarbone and several ribs in a bad crash with other top riders during the Tour of Basque Country. The Danish rider's Visma-Lease A Bike team says that further tests revealed the Vingegaard also suffered a collapsed lung and a pulmonary contusion. Remco Evenepoel broke a collarbone and a shoulder blade in the pileup. The accident comes less than three months before the Tour's start on June 29 when Vingegaard is scheduled to to again face off against top rival Tadej Pogačar. That highly anticipated rematch is now in doubt.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Nelson Velázquez and MJ Melendez each homered and drove in two runs, leading Seth Lugo and the Kansas City Royals to a 10-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night.

Right fielder Hunter Renfroe threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the sixth inning before Kansas City broke it open with eight runs in the seventh.

Velázquez drove in the first two runs of the game with a single and a homer.

“I was just trying to make contact,” he said. “I’m feeling good, trusting in everything we have been working on since spring training.”

Lugo (1-0) allowed one run and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings for his first win with the Royals. It was the latest quality outing by one of Kansas City's starters, who have a 1.43 ERA.

“Seth attacked from the beginning,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “He threw a ton of strikes and mixed in all his pitches. He gets a lot of groundballs.”

Lugo struck out three and walked two. Angel Zerpa retired Andrew Benintendi with a runner on second to end the seventh, preserving a one-run lead.

“I thought I made some good pitches,” Lugo said. “They had some soft hits.”

Michael Soroka (0-1) gave up two runs and six hits over six innings in his second start for the White Sox.

Kansas City scored in the second on an RBI single by Velázquez.

The White Sox loaded the bases with one out in the third on a pair of singles and an error by shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., but Witt redeemed himself by turning an inning-ending double play.

“Ironically, before the game we were looking at it, we had only turned one double play prior to tonight," Quatraro said. "I don’t know how many it was tonight, three or four, but that was the key in keeping out of trouble along with throwing out the run at the plate.”

Velázquez made it 2-0 in the fourth with a 429-foot homer into the fountains in left-center.

Chicago got a run off Lugo in the sixth, snapping a scoreless streak of 25 innings. Andrew Vaughn lined a single to score Yoán Moncada. Lugo escaped further damage when Braden Shewmake flied out and Renfroe cut down Gavin Sheets at the plate tagging up from third.

The Royals busted it open in the seventh. Deivi García issued a pair of one-out walks and a single to pinch-hitter Adam Frazier. Kyle Isbel drove in two runs with a single and Maikel Garcia drove in another, chasing García. Dominic Leone walked Witt before a two-out error by Shewmake at shortstop scored three more.

“(The walks) really opened up the floodgates,” Chicago manager Pedro Grifol said. “Anytime you walk two guys, you’re asking for trouble. It’s just one inning of baseball that got away from us. We made a couple of mistakes, both fundamentally and physically, that we’ve got to clean up.”

Melendez then smacked his first homer of the season, a two-run shot.

“It was a good ballgame until the seventh inning and we let it get away from us there," Grifol said. "Crooked numbers, they always have a walk in there somewhere. Walks will kill you.”

Chicago signed RHP Mike Clevinger to a $3 million, one-year contract and optioned him to the minors. To make room on the 40-man roster, INF José Rodríguez was designated for assignment.

The teams play the second game of a four-game series Friday.

The celebration will take place from 6-8 p.m. and will allow the public to take photos with the student-athletes and coaching staff, as well as get autographs and hear speeches.

HutchCC capped off an unbeaten season, 37-0 on Monday evening with a <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/03303cb3-2957-412e-92a1-33edbc221ecf">national championship win over Northwest Florida State, 88-80.</a>

The win gave the Blue Dragons it's first-ever national title in program history.

The game will be played at the Wolstein Center on the Cleveland State campus.

Gregory will suit up for either Team Lieberman or Team Miller, which will be coached by Naismith Hall of Famers and basketball legends Nancy Lieberman and Cheryl Miller, respectively.

Gregory completed her two seasons with the Wildcats as the first player to transfer to K-State and then reach the 1,000- and 1,500-point marks in her collegiate career as she finished with 1,753 (12.4 ppg). Gregory scored in double figures in 44 games at K-State and 85 games in her career. She ranks fifth in program history for career free throw percentage (.803).

The product of Tulsa, Oklahoma, was named a 2024 All-Big 12 honorable mention recipient as she averaged just under 10 points per game this season (9.4) and established a career-high for assists with 114 (3.4 apg). When combined with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/serena-sundell/11197">Serena Sundell's</a>&nbsp;189 assists, the tandem ranked second in school history for combined assists in a season (303). Gregory ranked 12th in the Big 12 in assists per game and was sixth in the league in assist-turnover ratio (1.78).

Gregory led the Wildcats in their two NCAA Tournament games with 17.0 points on a .458 field goal percentage. She tallied a season-high 22 points against Portland in K-State's first round win.&nbsp;

K-State (26-8) completed the 56th season in program history, as the Wildcats achieved its 18th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history and collected 26 wins for the first time since the 2002-03 season. A 5-foot-11, 175-pound guard, McDaniel arrives at K-State after 2 seasons (2022-24) at Michigan, where he led the Wolverines in scoring (16.3 ppg.), 3-point field goals (56), assists (4.7 apg.), steals (1.1 spg.) and minutes (35.4 mpg.) as a sophomore in 2023-24. In his 2 seasons in Ann Arbor, he averaged 12 points on 40 percent shooting (255-of-639), including 36.3 percent (89-of-245) from 3-point range, to go with 4.1 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.1 steals in 32.8 minutes per game while playing in 60 of a possible 66 games with 52 starts.

“It’s always a great day to be a Wildcat but even better when you get to welcome a player like Dug and his family to K-State,” said Tang. “Obviously he’s a tremendously skilled basketball player with a history of winning at both Paul VI and Team Takeover. He scored in double figures 13 times, including a season-best 20 points in an overtime win over Wisconsin on Feb. 26, 2023. He led the Wolverines in assists (122), while he was second in steals (38) and fourth in scoring. He was the first freshman to post a 100-plus assist season since&nbsp;Trey Burke&nbsp;in 2011-12.McDaniel was a consensus Top 100 recruit out of St. Paul VI Catholic High School in Chantilly, Va., leading the Panthers to a 31-5 record and VISAA (Virginia Interscholastic Athletic Association) Division I State Championship as a senior in 2021-22.
