Wichita State (18-15) dropped its 42nd straight game to the Sooners and 5-53 all-time against OU.The Shockers managed just four hits on the night, one each from&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/cc-wong/8967">CC Wong</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/addison-barnard/7558">Addison Barnard</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/caroline-tallent/7571">Caroline Tallent</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/jessica-garcia/7563">Jessica Garcia</a>.

<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/lauren-howell/7566">Lauren Howell</a>&nbsp;(3-3) took the loss in just 1.0 inning in the start. Oklahoma scored all seven of its runs off Howell on just three hits and five walks.&nbsp; The performance of the night belonged to&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/alison-cooper/7561">Alison Cooper</a>&nbsp;out of the bullpen. The lefty held the Sooners scoreless over the final 6.0 innings, allowing just six hits to go with one walk and five strikeouts.

Oklahoma did all of its damage in the first and second innings. A leadoff walk in the top of the first led to an RBI double from Alyssa Brito to open the scoring.&nbsp; The Sooners would tack on two more on an RBI double from Kinzie Hansen and an RBI groundout from Kasidi Pickering.In the second, an infield single and three straight walks made it 4-0. A sac fly and a two-run double upped the lead to 7-0 and that would be it for the scoring on the night.

Wichita State's best scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the sixth when Wong drew a walk and Barnard doubled to put runners on second and third with only one out, but a strikeout and a lineout left them stranded.

Wichita State heads to the Sunshine State to face South Florida for a three-game series, April 12-14.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -&nbsp;The Springfield Cardinals scored five straight runs across the middle three innings to beat the Wichita Wind Surge 6-2 at Hammons Stadium. Wichita was held scoreless over the final six innings on the road to mark their third loss in four games.

Leadoff hitter&nbsp;Emmanuel Rodriguez&nbsp;slapped his first home run in a Wind Surge uniform in the top of the third toward the left center field berm to put Wichita ahead 2-1.

After Springfield tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a run-scoring groundout, Matt Lloyd’s sacrifice fly toward left fielder&nbsp;Jeferson Morales&nbsp;gave the Cardinals an advantage they would not relinquish for the rest of the game.

Major League rehabber Lars Nootbar pulled a liner toward&nbsp;Carson McCusker&nbsp;in right field with men on the corners an inning later that clipped off McCusker’s glove and rolled toward the wall; both Cardinals runners came around to score. Nootbar advanced to third and would cross home plate as the sixth Springfield run as the following batter, Bryan Torres, singled him in on an RBI single to left field.

Kala’i Rosario&nbsp;laced a two-out double to center in the ninth with two outs and was stranded there as the game ended on a swinging strikeout by McCusker.

⚾ Springfield too Much For Wind Surge

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez hit a game-ending single in the 10th inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Houston Astros 4-3 on Tuesday night for their fifth consecutive victory.

Garrett Hampson began the Kansas City 10th on second as the automatic runner, replacing Vinnie Pasquantino. Hampson raced home when Perez led off the inning with a single to center against Wander Suero (0-1).

“We’re gonna play hard,” Perez said. “We’re gonna do our best, especially right now. We've got new comfort.”

James McArthur (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win.

Perez and Nelson Velázquez each had two hits for the Royals. Bobby Witt Jr. and Maikel Garcia each drove in a run.

Nick Anderson, Chris Stratton, John Schreiber and McArthur combined for five scoreless innings of four-hit ball in relief of Royals starter Cole Ragans.

“These guys are incredible,” Ragans said of the bullpen. “They pitched incredible. They kept us right there. That’s really, really big.”

Witt's biggest contribution may have been a diving stop on a two-out single by Jeremy Peña in the top of the 10th. Had the ball gotten past the young shortstop, the Astros likely would have taken the lead.

“I thought it did have a chance of going through,” Peña said. “I’ll shout out to Bobby Witt. (He) made a nice play.”

Yordan Alvarez had four hits and two RBIs for Houston, which had won two in a row. Peña had two hits and scored a run.

The Astros loaded the bases with three straight singles to start the first inning, but Ragans limited the damage to a run-scoring fielder’s choice for Yainer Diaz.

“I don’t think (Ragans) had his best stuff,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “That’s a good lineup, and they made him work. (But) if we turn that double play in the first or he’s able to get Alvarez out one of those times with two strikes, he’s coming out of there with one or maybe no runs. Credit to him really."

Alvarez singled in Peña with two out in the second, and then doubled home Mauricio Dubón in the fourth.

Ragans surrendered 10 hits in five innings for Kansas City. He struck out five and walked one.

Houston went 5 for 18 with runners in scoring position and left 13 runners on base.

“We had some opportunities to get some guys in (with) less than two outs," Houston manager Joe Espada said. "We just couldn’t capitalize.”

Houston right-hander Cristian Javier was charged with three runs, two earned, and five hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked three.

Maikel Garcia’s sacrifice fly in the fifth stopped Javier’s scoreless streak at 15 innings to start the season. Witt drove in Hunter Renfroe with a two-out triple, and then scored on an error on third baseman Alex Bregman.

Astros: Placed LHP Framber Valdez on the 10-day injured list with left elbow inflammation. They selected the contract of Suero from Triple-A Sugar Land to take his place. The Astros also recalled LHP Parker Mushinski from Sugar Land and optioned RHP Blair Henley to the minors. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Astros transferred RHP Oliver Ortega to the 60-day IL.

Royals: Acquired RHP Colin Selby from Pittsburgh for minor league pitcher Connor Oliver. To make room on the 40-man roster for Selby, LHP Josh Taylor was moved to the 60-day IL. The Royals also signed RHP Zach Davies to a minor league deal.

The Astros and Royals continue their three-game series Wednesday. RHP Spencer Arrighetti will make his major league debut for Houston against Seth Lugo (1-0, 0.71 ERA).

WICHITA, Kan. - #21 Oklahoma State jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first three innings and never looked back, knocking off Wichita State 9-5 on Tuesday night at Riverfront Stadium.

The Shockers (19-14) had several chances to get back into the game late, stranding a season-high 16 runners on base and going just 5-for-21 with runners in scoring position. Wichita State nearly doubled up the Cowboys in hits (14-8) and OSU committed two errors to Wichita State's one, but the Shockers walked 11 and hit three batters to open the door for the early offense.

After a Carson Benge RBI double in the first inning got the scoring started, the Cowboys scored three runs in the second without the benefit of a hit. A bases-loaded hit by pitch and two bases-loaded walks made it 4-0, then three more walks in the third set the stage for a Benge sacrifice fly that extended the Cowboys lead to 5-0.

Wichita State finally drew blood in the bottom of the fifth, using a walk and three consecutive singles to plate two runs against reliever Aaron Weber. But the Shockers stranded two men in scoring position in the inning, and Oklahoma State restored their cushion with a single tally in the sixth and three more in the top of the eighth to swell the lead to 9-2.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/lane-haworth/7609">Lane Haworth</a>&nbsp;rapped his third hit of the night in the bottom of the eighth to drive home a run and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/kam-durnin/7604">Kam Durnin</a>&nbsp;rifled a two-out, two-run triple in the bottom of the ninth that produced the final margin.

Tara VanDerveer retires as Stanford women's hoops coach after setting NCAA wins record this year

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Tara VanDerveer, the winningest basketball coach in NCAA history, has announced her retirement after 38 seasons leading the Stanford women's team and 45 years overall. The 70-year-old VanDerveer surpassed Mike Krzyzewski for the wins record earlier this year. The Hall of Famer departs with 1,216 victories at Idaho, Ohio State and Stanford. And as has been the plan for years, top Cardinal assistant Kate Paye is set to take over the program, and the school said negotiations with Paye are underway. Paye played for VanDerveer from 1991-95 and has coached on her staff for 17 years.

Women's NCAA title game outdraws the men's championship with an average of 18.9 million viewers

The women's NCAA championship game drew a bigger television audience than the men's title game for the first time, with an average of 18.9 million viewers watching undefeated South Carolina beat Iowa and superstar Caitlin Clark. The Sunday afternoon game on ABC and ESPN outdrew Monday's men's final between UConn and Purdue by four million. The Huskies' 75-60 victory averaged 14.82 million on TBS and TNT. The women's final was the second most-watched non-Olympic women's sporting event on U.S. television, trailing only the 2015 Women's World Cup final between the United States and Japan.

John Calipari departs Kentucky after 15 years, saying the program 'needs to hear another voice'

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — John Calipari says he is stepping down as Kentucky's men's basketball coach after 15 years. He say the "program probably needs to hear another voice" amid reports that he's closing in on a deal with Arkansas. Calipari posted a video on X in which he said that after talking with his wife, Ellen, he decided a change was needed. He didn't specifically mention the Arkansas opening. The Hall of Famer simply said, "There have been opportunities that have been presented to us, so we're discussing them as a family." Calipari leaves a Wildcats program he guided to the 2012 NCAA championship among four Final Four appearances.

Celtics become 1st NBA team to shoot no free throws. Boston, Bucks combine for record-low 2 attempts

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Bucks and Celtics combined for a record-low two free throw attempts Tuesday night, when the Celtics became the first team in NBA history to not shoot one. Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo shot the only two free throws of the game, making one, in the Bucks' 104-91 victory. The Memphis Grizzlies and Atlanta Hawks held the previous record of one attempted free throw in a game. The Bucks committed just four fouls Tuesday, the fewest in league history. The two combined attempts shattered the previous record of 11, set on Nov. 10, 2019, when Indiana shot five and Orlando had six.

The city's enduring enthusiasm will be on full display Wednesday when members of the International Olympic Committee descend on northern Utah for their final site visits ahead of a formal announcement expected this July to name Salt Lake City the host for 2034. MILWAUKEE (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo was undergoing testing after leaving the Milwaukee Bucks' game with the Boston Celtics on Tuesday due to an injury to his left calf. Milwaukee coach Doc Rivers said after the Bucks' 104-91 victory that Antetokounmpo was undergoing an MRI exam on his calf and also would have his Achilles tendon tested. Antetokounmpo was heading up the court after a 3-point basket by Boston's Derrick White late in the third quarter when the two-time MVP grabbed his left calf and took a seat on the floor before being helped off the court.

Tiger Woods has not given up hope of adding another Masters green jacket

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Tiger Woods is 48 and coping with injuries that limit his practice and how often he can play. What he hasn't lost is hope. Woods says he still thinks he can win the Masters and match Jack Nicklaus with a sixth green jacket. The evidence is stacked against him, most notably that he has played only 24 holes in one tournament this year. Woods has a chance this week to set the Masters record by making his 24th consecutive cut. Fred Couples currently shares the record and he says Woods isn't thinking about that. Couples says Woods is playing to win.

Orioles are calling up top prospect Jackson Holliday, AP source says

BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles are calling up top prospect Jackson Holliday, according to a person with knowledge of the decision. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday night because the move wasn't official yet. Holliday was the No. 1 pick in the 2022 amateur draft out of high school in Oklahoma and breezed through the minor leagues. He narrowly missed out on a spot on the Orioles' opening-day roster last month. The 20-year-old infielder hit .333 with two home runs and five doubles in 42 at-bats during a short stint with Triple-A Norfolk this season. Holliday is the game's top-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline.

Shea Langeliers hits 3 home runs, leads Athletics over Rangers 4-3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Shea Langeliers hit three home runs, including a two-run drive in the ninth inning that lifted the Oakland Athletics over the Texas Rangers 4-3. Langeliers, a 26-year-old who entered with 29 career big league homers, hit solo drives in the second off Nathan Eovaldi and in the seventh against David Robertson. Domantas Sabonis' double-double streak ends at 61 games as Kings lose to Thunder

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Sacramento Kings center Domantas Sabonis' double-double streak has ended at 61 games. Sabonis had eight points and 13 rebounds in Sacrament's 112-105 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night. Sabonis owns the seventh-longest streak of double-doubles in NBA history. He had just moved past Elvin Hayes' stretch of 60 straight from Oct. 30, 1968, to Feb. 22, 1969. His streak was the longest since the NBA and ABA merged for the 1976-77 season. He broke Kevin Love's mark of 53 straight since the merger last month.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Salthawks dropped a pair of games to the Maize South Mavericks on Tuesday evening at Hobart-Detter Field. Maize South won the opener, 10-6 before winning the second, 3-2.

Game 1: Maize South 10, Hutchinson 6

Hutchinson jumped out to lead in the first inning following a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly by Cole Bleything to put the Salthawks on the board first. The Salthawks added one more following a wild pitch to score Caiden Beavers.

The Salthawks added two more in the second on an RBI double by Carter Morgan and another wild pitch that plated Morgan.

Maize South plated four runs in the top of the third inning to take a 5-4 lead. 

Hutchinson scored two in the bottom of the fourth inning to regain the lead on a two-run single by Cole Bleything to put the Salthawks up 6-5.

Maize South scored a single run in the fifth and sixth inning and then added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh.

Morgan and Bleything each finished with a two-hit game and drove in all four runs, three for Bleything and one for Morgan.

Game 2: Maize South 3, Hutchinson 2

The Salthawks' rally in the bottom of the seventh came up just short, stranding the bases loaded with one out in the inning.

Maize South scored the first two runs of the game, coming on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly in the second inning.

Hutchinson scored its first run in the third inning on a wild pitch that plated Morgan.&nbsp;

The Salthawks added one more in the fourth on an RBI triple by Jack Yoder, plating Lakin Franz to tie the game at two.

The final run in the game was scored in the top of the sixth inning on an error by the Salthawks.

Hutchinson loaded the bases with one out in the seventh but were unable to score any runs.

The Salthawks are now 4-7 overall and will travel to Haysville on Friday to play the Campus Colts at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team capped off its unbeaten and national championship season with a celebration on Tuesday at the Sports Arena.&nbsp;

Hundreds of attendees were able to hear speeches from freshman Kiki Smith, freshman Hailey Jackson, head coach John Ontjes, Sports Information Director Steve Carpenter, HutchCC President Dr. Carter File, city of Hutchinson interim City Manager Mary Grace Clements, and Voice of the Blue Dragons, Sean Boston. HutchCC Public Address voice and My 93-1 personality Daren Dunn announced the team, as well.&nbsp;

The HutchCC athletic department also put together several highlight videos to show off the accomplishments throughout the entire season, plus a special presentation of highlights from the national championship run in Casper, Wyoming.

🏀 WBB: Blue Dragons put bow on season with national championship celebration

McPherson High School is excited to announce Clint Kinnamon as the next head coach of the Lady Pup Basketball Program! Coach Kinnamon comes to MHS with 32 years of head coaching experience, that includes 15 state tournament appearances, four state championships, three runners-up, two third place finishes, and one COVID final four.

Coach Kinnamon has a proven track record leading several successful programs that include the girl’s program at Claflin, and the boy’s programs at Arkansas City, St. John-Hudson, Wichita-East &amp; Remington, amassing a 520-240 career record as a head coach. His St. John’s teams hold the state record for winning percentage in all classes at the state tournament, 85.6% (18-4), and set the state record for consecutive wins at 63 (2013-15). Kinnamon has helped develop multiple players that have made the jump to the next level after high school, including Jackie Stiles at Claflin, and Dean Wade at St. John. Coach Kinnamon has been honored as the Topeka Capitol Journal Co-Coach of the Year (‘15), KBCA Basketball

Coach of the Year 4X (‘07, ‘13, ‘14, ‘15), Sports in Kansas Coach of the Year 3X (‘14, ‘15, ‘20), Varsity Kansas Coach of the Year 3X (‘14, ‘15, ‘20), Kansas Coaches Association Coach of the Year (‘14), Western Kansas Coach of the Year 8X (‘94, ‘95, ‘96, ‘04, ‘06, ‘07, ‘08, ‘15) and Ark Valley League Co-Coach of the Year (‘01).

Coach Kinnamon, who is a graduate of Hutchinson Community College and McPherson College, will teach in the McPherson Alternative Center at MHS beginning next fall.

McPherson Activities Director, Shane Backhus, said this about the hire: “We are very excited for Clint Kinnamon to lead the McPherson High Girls Basketball Program into the future. We did a state wide search, and had excellent applicants and interviews. Coach Kinnamon set himself apart through the interview process with his passion and knowledge of the game, experience, and ability to build great relationships with students and players. Our interview committee was extremely impressed with his desire to develop teams with high character and tough competitors. Coach Kinnamon has the experience and ability to lead our program into the future, and carry on the traditions of success, which were established by former coaches Scott Schafer and Chris Strathman.”

Coach Kinnamon shared these thoughts as he makes the transition to MHS: "Following two highly successful coaches is never an easy task. Coach Schafer and Coach Strathman both did an amazing job leading the Girls Basketball program for many years and have left it in great shape. I'm extremely excited to become part of the tradition that is Bullpup Girls Basketball and will try to continue and build upon their success. There is a lot of talent in McPherson and I am thrilled to get the chance to meet the high school, middle school and youth players to talk about my vision to lead the program for years to come."

The event will take place from 6-8 p.m. in the Sports Arena with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. The celebration will feature introductions, speeches, autographs, pictures and many more fun festivities.

The event is free and open to the public.

The Blue Dragons defeated Northwest Florida State on Monday, April 1 to win the first title in the 50-year history of Blue Dragon women's basketball. Hutchinson won the game in overtime, 88-80.

UConn was efficient on offense but won this with defense. The Huskies limited the country's second-best 3-point shooting team to a mere seven shots behind the arc, and Purdue only made one. 18.7 million: Early figures from NCAA women's title game make it most-watched hoops game in 5 years

BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — South Carolina's victory over Caitlin Clark and Iowa in Sunday's women's NCAA championship game had a preliminary audience average of 18.7 million on ABC and ESPN. The only sporting events in the United States to draw a bigger TV audience since 2019 have been football, the World Cup and the Olympics. The audience numbers are expected to increase when Nielsen releases its final numbers on Tuesday. Nielsen says the audience peaked at 24 million. It's the most-watched basketball game since 2019, when the men's NCAA title game between Virginia and Texas Tech averaged 19.6 million on CBS.

Tony Finau played a chip on the 11th hole he couldn't keep on the green. Tiger Woods was out early with Will Zalatoris for nine holes. Among those who used Monday as a day of rest was Akshay Bhatia. And for good reason. He just got into the Masters by winning the Texas Open.

NAIA all but bans transgender athletes from women's sports. NCAA vows to ensure 'fair competition'

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced a policy that all but bans transgender athletes from women's sports. The NAIA is the governing body for mostly small colleges, covering about 83,000 athletes across the country. The NAIA's Council of Presidents approved the policy in a 20-0 vote. The NAIA is believed to be the first college sports organization to take such a step. The NCAA responded by saying it remains committed to "fair competition for all student-athletes in all NCAA championships."

Tiger talks: Zalatoris leans on advice from Woods in return from back surgery to play the Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — If anybody knows what Will Zalatoris has gone through as he tries to return from back surgery to play competitive golf again, it just might be his playing partner during Monday's practice round for the Masters. Five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods has undergone the same procedure several times to alleviate pain caused by a herniated disc. Zalatoris says most of Woods' advice has been about the rehabilitation process and how to be patient in the recovery. But it was somehow fitting that the two were first off the tee together one year to the day that Zalatoris was on the operating table.

ATLANTA (AP) — Baseball's Hall of Fame will unveil a bronze statue of Hank Aaron on May 23 on the first floor of its museum in Cooperstown, New York. And the U.S. Postal Service will release a commemorative stamp picturing Aaron in his batting stance wearing his Atlanta Braves uniform. Both announcements came on the 50th anniversary of Aaron's 715th home run, which topped the record 714 hit by Babe Ruth. Aaron hit 755 home runs from 1954-76, a mark that stood until Barry Bonds hit 762 from 1986-2007, a feat assisted by performance-enhancing drugs. Aaron was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1982. A 25-time All-Star, he set a record with 2,297 RBIs.

Guardians' Shane Bieber emotional in discussing elbow injury, uncertain future with surgery looming

The 28-year-old is in his final season under contract with Cleveland, which has offered him a long-term deal in the past. GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — A basketball beatdown. A coaching clinic. A double-digit domination.

Take one guess who finished off a romp through college basketball again. You bet, it’s UConn — a team built to win now, and often, and by a lot every time it takes the court.

Coach Dan Hurley's Huskies delivered the latest of their suffocating hoops performances Monday night, smothering Purdue for a 75-60 victory to become the first team since 2007 to capture back-to-back national championships.

Tristen Newton&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/MarchMadnessMBB/status/1777529515146727550">scored 20 points</a>&nbsp;for the Huskies, who won their 12th straight March Madness game — not a single one of them decided by fewer than 13 points.

UConn was efficient on offense but won this with defense. The Huskies (37-3) limited the country’s second-best 3-point shooting team to a mere seven shots behind the arc and only a single make, while happily allowing 7-foot-4 AP Player of the Year Zach Edey to go for 37 points on 25 shot attempts.

<a href="https://twitter.com/CBSSports/status/1777541833658187900">UConn won its sixth overall title</a>&nbsp;and joined the 2006-07 Florida Gators and the 1991-92 Duke Blue Devils as just the third team to repeat since John Wooden’s UCLA dynasty of the 1960s and ’70s.

“I just think it’s the best two-year run in a very, very long time, just because of everything we lost from last year’s team,” said Hurley, whose top two scorers from last year now play in the NBA. “To lose that much and do it again, it’s got to be as impressive a two-year run since at least prior to Duke.”

The 2024 Huskies are the sixth team to win all six tournament games by double-digit margins. They won those games by a grand total of 140 points, blowing past the 1996 Kentucky team, which won its six by 129.

In a matchup of two top seeds, they wore down the Boilermakers (34-5), who made it this far a year after becoming just the second No. 1 in the history of March Madness to fall in the first round. But Purdue left the same way it came — still looking for the program’s first NCAA title.

So much for the free-for-all this new age of the transfer portal and name, image and likeness deals was supposed to become. UConn has figured out how to dominate and replenish its roster with players who understand their roles.

Cam Spencer, a transfer from Rutgers, Stephon Castle, a blue-chip freshman, and Alex Karaban, a sophomore from last year’s team, spent the night guarding the 3-point line and making life miserable for Purdue’s guards.

“They just made a decision — we can defend the perimeter, and we can take this away from you, you’re going to get the ball to your best player, he’ll be 1-on-1, and that’s that,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said.

This was only the second time this season Purdue didn’t put up 10 3-point attempts, and how ’bout this final score: Edey 37, the rest of the Boilermakers 23.

How serious was Hurley about defending the perimeter? When Braden Smith wiggled loose for a semi-open look to make Purdue’s first 3 of the game with 2:17 left in the first half, the coach bolted onto the floor and called timeout.

“Coaches made a point that we’d be really locked in if we controlled their 3-point attempts,” Spencer said. “Holding them to seven shows we were locked in on making sure their guards didn’t get involved in the game.”

With his Xs-and-Os masterpiece, Hurley joins former Florida coach Billy Donovan in the back-to-back club, and is in company with Bill Self and Rick Pitino as only the third active coach with two championships. News broke over the weekend that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kentucky-calipari-arkansas-570669b80b59b362ab2d75d83246f36b">it appears there's a job opening at Kentucky</a>, and the UConn coach's name has come up there.

“I don't think that's a concern,” Hurley said. “My wife, you should have her answer that.”

No way the Huskies would want to lose him.

Hurley earned every penny in this one. In the first half, he begged with, swore at and generally berated the refs about over-the-backs, elbows and hip checks that weren’t called.

Once, when that didn’t work after Edey set a hard (and probably legal) pick against Castle, Hurley started in on Edey himself as the center walked toward the Purdue bench for a timeout.

But the coach’s best work came in whatever hotel room he used to draw up the game plan.

“The whole game plan was no Smith, no Loyer, no Jones, no Gillis,” Hurley said, as he ticked off the last names of the Purdue guards. “We knew if we keep them below 18, 20 points as a group, and they had no chance to win, no matter how well Zach played.”

It's no slight on Edey, who battled gamely, finishing with 10 rebounds to record his 30th double-double of the season. But this game proved the number crunchers and analytics experts right. UConn let Edey back in and back down all night on 7-2 Donovan Clingan, giving up difficult 2s in the post in exchange for any 3s.

“They only doubled late in the second half, but by that point we had dug ourselves too deep of a hole,” Fletcher Loyer said.

The defensive dominance put the finishing touch on a tournament in which UConn's average margin of victory was 23.3 points. Sure, Hurley might have to replace two or three of these players, but the coach said he'll worry about that in a week or two.

🏀 UConn runs to its 2nd straight NCAA title, beating Zach Edey and Purdue

&nbsp;KJCCC commissioner Mike Saddler had a difficult choice to make.

Saddler had to replace 25-year veteran women’s basketball officials supervisor Monty Applebee. Monty basically invented the position, and had selected and mentored a corps of young referees and veteran officials.

But Applebee retired at the end of the 2023-24 basketball season, and Saddler began his search for a replacement.

He did not have to look for very long, as several worthy candidates stepped forward almost immediately to replace Applebee.

Gary Pauls emerged from the stacked field, and was named the new supervisor of women’s basketball officials for the conference this week.

“Gary’s resume as an official is outstanding,” said Saddler. “He has spent many years working in the KJCCC as an official, and has worked at national tournaments at multiple levels.”

Pauls voiced his feelings about the profession of basketball official.

“What keeps me interested in officiating is my passion for ‘what we do’ and giving back to the profession that has been very good to me,” said Pauls. “This opportunity gives me the platform to be able to continue the strong foundation and reputation of the women's officials in the KJCCC.”

“In addition to our current procedures, I will be implementing new ideas and processes which will continue to improve the product we put on the floor,” said Pauls.

Pauls has officiated at the collegiate level for 15 years. He begins the KJCCC supervisor position immediately. Pauls will coordinate game assignments, and oversee summer development camps. He will continue to referee at the high school level, and that will aid him in identifying new young officials.

“We will recruit and train officials so that our&nbsp;staff is in a position to maintain the highest level of refereeing,” said Pauls. “My role will be to develop our officials, and work with the KJCCC schools, administrators, coaches, and players to create an atmosphere of cooperation and accountability.”&nbsp;

Saddler is confident Pauls is the right man to fill the supervisor’s role.

The rosters for the 2024 Kansas Volleyball Association All-Star game have been announced. The game will be held at 4:30 p.m. June 1 at Washburn’s Lee Arena in Topeka.
