The Kansas Shrine Bowl is proud to announce the selection of Dominick Dingle, Wichita Heights High School,&nbsp;and Garrett Michael, Sabetha High School, as the Head Coaches for the 52nd Kansas Shrine Bowl presented by Mammoth. 

The head coaches are selected from the group of assistant coaches from the previous year’s game. Their selection is determined by a vote from the previous year’s coaching staff, camp directors and supportstaff. The 52nd Kansas Shrine Bowl presented by Mammoth will be played on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Memorial Stadium in Dodge City, Kansas.

The West team will be led by Wichita Heights Head Coach Dominick Dingle. Coach Dingle is entering his 7th season at Wichita Heights High School, where he has compiled an overall record of 26-27. Prior to being named the Head Coach at Wichita Heights in 2018, Dingle spent ten seasons as the Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator at Garden City High School and one season as an assistant coach at Leavenworth High School.

“First, I would like to thank God for allowing me to be selected as the Head coach of the Shrine Bowl West team. I am honored and grateful that God continues to work exceedingly and abundantly in my life,” said Coach Dominick Dingle. “This opportunity is more than I could ever ask or imagine (Eph. 3:20). I am truly blessed for the opportunity to serve a role in helping the Shriners and the Kansas Shrine Bowl continue to make a positive impact on the lives of so many young people in Kansas and around the world. I would also like to thank my family, Wichita Heights players, coaching staff, administration, and the entire Falcon Family. Without your continued support and dedication this opportunity to represent Wichita Heights in the 2025 Kansas Shrine Bowl would not be possible. Westside!”

The 2025 East squad will be led by Garrett Michael of Sabetha High School. Coach Michael led the Sabetha program for 15 years as the Head Coach, compiling an overall record of 104-59. During his leadership, the Bluejays won back-to-back 3A state championships in 2017 and 2018, while also making back-to-back runs to the state semifinals in 2022 and 2023. Along with this past summer, Coach Michael previously coached in the Kansas Shrine Bowl in 2018 as an assistant coach.

The hospital kids have a spectacular view on life and their talents top the charts. This is the pinnacle of high school football. My father was the East Shrine Bowl head coach in 1985, so this is a dream come true for me. The West holds the all-time series advantage with a 31-18-2 record after the East team ended a six-year drought with a 35-26 win during the 51st Kansas Shrine Bowl presented by Mammoth. The East will be looking to win consecutive games for the first time since 2015 and 2016.

2025 Kansas Shrine Bowl Head Coaches Announced

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — There are a few rule changes to watch on Thursday evening when the Hutchinson Community College football team opens the season. The Blue Dragons host New Mexico Military Institute at Gowans Stadium at 6 p.m.

The first rule change to keep an eye on will be the two-minute timeout. Most people are familiar with the Two-Minute Warning at the NFL level, that occurs when the clock strikes 2:00, or any stoppage of play under the two-minute mark.

This past April, the NCAA rules panel approved the addition of the two-minute timeout at the collegiate level. The panel voted in favor of the two-minute stoppage in the second and fourth quarters.

Per the NCAA release, this rule change synchronizes all timing rules, such as 10-second runoffs and stopping the clock when a first down is gained in bounds, which coincides with the two-minute timeout.

HutchCC head coach Drew Dallas on the two-minute timeout and how that will change the game at the junior college level.

"Yeah, I mean obviously it's going to be a huge change for us," Dallas said. "It will change how us coaches call timeouts and manage end of the half and end of the game situations."

The other change you may notice is the use of tablets for players on the sidelines.

The NCAA rules panel approved the option for teams to use tables to view in-game video. The video can include the broadcast feed and camera angles from the coach's sideline and coach's end zone.

Although the NCAA is allowing teams to have up to 18 active tables for use in the coaching booth, sideline and locker room, the KJCCC has established that up to four tablets will be permitted to use.

"I think that's a great rule change for us," KJCCC supervisor of officials Craig Helser said. "It will let our coaches be able to show their players film during the game, so that's a nice rule change."

Dallas also thinks it will be a great addition to the conference this season.

"We'll have a couple in the press box and a couple down on the field for our guys," Dallas said. "Obviously that's going to play a big part in games to identify what teams are doing offensively, defensively and on special teams. I think it will give us a chance to make better in-game adjustments if we use it properly."

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Three people familiar with the deal say All-Pro wide receiver CeeDee Lamb has ended his holdout with the Dallas Cowboys by agreeing to a $136 million, four-year contract. Lamb is going into the last year of his rookie contract after being drafted 17th overall in 2020. He is a close second to Minnesota receiver Justin Jefferson as the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. Lamb led the NFL in receptions last season with 135 and was second in yards receiving with 1,749 and third in touchdown receptions with 12.

Danny Jansen plays for both teams in Blue Jays-Red Sox game, an MLB first

BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox catcher Danny Jansen became the first player in Major League Baseball history to appear in the same game for both teams when he took the field for Boston in the resumption of a rain-delayed game he started for Toronto back in June. Jansen was in the Blue Jays' lineup at catcher and batting in the second inning on June 26 when the game was suspended. He was traded to the Red Sox last month, and on Monday he took his position behind the plate as pinch-hitter Daulton Varsho completed an at-bat that Jansen started.

Coco Gauff begins her US Open title defense with an easy win after a two-match losing streak

NEW YORK (AP) — Coco Gauff's U.S. Open title defense is off to a successful start. The 20-year-old American beat Varvara Gracheva 6-2, 6-0 in just 66 minutes on Monday. Gauff had lost two matches in a row on hard courts before arriving in New York, where she won last year's championship for her first Grand Slam trophy. Other winners on Day 1 included No. 7 Zheng Qinwen, No. 14 Madison Keys, No. 4 Alexander Zverev, No. 6 Andrey Rublev, No. 8 Casper Ruud and Americans Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton. Shelton beat 2020 U.S. Open champion Dominic Thiem, who is retiring after the season.

Dak Prescott figures to get paid one way or another. The star Dallas quarterback would love for that to be with the Cowboys, but the question lingers in the final year of his current contract. The U.S. Tennis Association is flipping the script on pickleball by promoting its own short-court version of tennis called "red ball tennis." Backers bill it as the ideal way for people of all ages to get into tennis, and say the best place to try it is on pickleball courts.

Viva La México: NASCAR to take Cup Series international for 1st points race of modern era

NASCAR will take its top Cup Series international for the first points-paying race outside the United States next year with a June stop in Mexico City. The Cup Series will race at storied Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez and have a Tuesday morning news conference in Mexico City to discuss the event. The Cup race will be June 15 and NASCAR's second-tier Xfinity Series and NASCAR Mexico Series will be part of the weekend. The Cup Series has never gone international in the modern era for anything besides exhibition races. It held exhibitions in Japan between 1996 and 1998, and once in Australia in 1988. The only two points-paying Cup races previously held internationally were in Canada, in 1952 and 1958.

NASCAR appeal officer upholds decision to revoke Austin Dillon's playoff berth after win at Richmond

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Austin Dillon's overly aggressive victory at Richmond Raceway won't land him a spot in the Cup Series playoffs. A NASCAR appeal officer on Monday upheld the sanctioning body's decision to revoke Dillon's automatic postseason berth that came with his controversial win at Richmond on Aug. 11. Dillon intentionally wrecked Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano coming out of the final turn to take the checkered flag for his first victory in two years. Three days later, NASCAR announced that Dillon's victory "crossed a line." Richard Childress Racing appealed. A NASCAR "final appeal officer" upheld the penalties and said race data indicated "that more likely than not a rule violation did occur."

US Open fans can move around in the stands and don't need to wait for changeovers to enter or exit

NEW YORK (AP) — Fans at the U.S. Open now have the freedom to do what fans at other sporting events take for granted. They can get out of their seats and move around during the action. Etiquette at tennis matches has long demanded that no one gets in or out during a game. But under a new policy instituted this year, people with tickets for certain sections at every court can move around whenever they want, even during play. Fans who spoke to The Associated Press on Monday said they liked the change. For players, it takes a little getting used to, but most don't see it as a big deal.

US Open: 16-year-old Californian Iva Jovic beats Magda Linette in the first round

NEW YORK (AP) — Iva Jovic is a 16-year-old from California who has became the youngest American to win a women's main-draw match at the U.S. Open since 2000. She eliminated 2023 Australian Open semifinalist Magda Linette of Poland 6-4, 6-3 on Monday. Katrina Scott of the U.S. was 16 when she won a match at the U.S. Open four years ago. Last year, Mirra Andreeva of Russia was 16 when she did it. Here's one indication of Jovic's youth: She still is planning to enter the junior event later in the tournament. Here's another: Jovic is still in school, taking online courses through a program she described as "convenient and ... very lenient."

CLEVELAND (AP) — Salvador Perez hit a grand slam and drove in a career-high six runs as the Kansas City Royals completed a doubleheader sweep of Cleveland, beating the Guardians 9-4 on Monday night to pull within one game of first in the AL Central.

The Royals won the opener 4-3 as Bobby Witt Jr.’s 27th homer — and 11th since July 19 — snapped a tie in the eighth inning.

After being nine games back in early July, the Royals have chipped away at Cleveland’s lead by posting an AL-best 22-13 record since the All-Star break. They can now move into a tie for the division lead with a win Tuesday.

“You couldn't ask for any more,” manager Matt Quatraro said. “By no means does that mean anything is done. But these guys played extremely hard today after getting beaten up the last couple days (losing back-to-back blowouts to Philadelphia) and put that behind them.”

In Game 2, the 34-year-old Perez, who served as DH after catching the opener in hot conditions, hit a solo homer in the fifth inning — after nearly striking out — and then connected for his sixth career slam in the sixth off Tim Herrin.

The nine-time All-Star catcher has 17 career multi-homer games, tying him with Hall of Famer George Brett for the most in Kansas City history.

“He's remarkable,” Quatraro said. “To catch that first game he was drained, you could tell, physically and mentally. Then to go out there and put those at-bats together was remarkable.”

The Guardians, who have led the Central since April 14, dropped to 0-8 in doubleheaders this season and 1-15 the last two.

But manager Stephen Vogt doesn't see any heads hanging.

“They're pros,” he said. “They know it was a rough day. Every time we have a tough day, they come back ready to win. This group’s not going to get discouraged. It’s not in their DNA. They all know where we’re at.”

Leading 5-4 in the sixth, the Royals loaded the bases and had a runner forced at the plate before Perez drove his 25th homer 457 feet into the bleachers. Perez's shot tied him with Frank White for the most slams in Royals history.

José Ramírez had three doubles, giving Cleveland's star third baseman two or more extra-base hits in 109 games to tie him with Tris Speaker for second in club history behind Earl Averill (135). Ramírez has also reached 30 homers, 30 doubles and 30 steals in a season for the second time.

Perez's homer in the fifth off Logan Allen (8-5) came one pitch after he caught a break.

He fouled back a 3-2 pitch that catcher Bo Naylor appeared to snare before it hit the ground. But plate umpire John Tumpane looked into Naylor's glove and noticed dirt on the ball, giving Perez new life.

With another chance, he pulled his 24th homer into the bleachers to give Kansas City a 5-4 lead.

Tumpane made the same call in the sixth, and this time Guardians pitching coach Carl Willis was ejected for arguing.

Willis not only felt Perez swung and missed, but that he didn't make contact.

“I don't think that it hit the bat,” Willis said. “They made the call they made, and the next pitch goes over the wall, then a half-inning later kind of a replay of the same scenario. That kind of set me off a little bit.”

In the opener, Witt connected on a 0-1 pitch from rookie Hunter Gaddis (4-3), driving it 413 feet into the left-field bleachers.

The All-Star shortstop came in batting .417 since the break, the fourth-highest average (with at least 125 at-bats) in the second half since World War II. Only Ted Williams (.454 in 1957), Ichiro Suzuki (.429, 2004) and George Brett (.421, 1980) have hit higher.

It was just another noteworthy moment of many in 2024 for Witt.

“He's always present,” Quatraro said. “He doesn't care what he's done prior or what he's going to do tomorrow. He's going to be in that box and trying to beat you right there. Bobby's a special player.”

MJ Melendez belted a three-run homer and made a sensational catch in left field for the Royals in Game 1.

John Schreiber (4-3) worked 1 2/3 innings and Lucas Erceg put the tying run on with a walk in the ninth before getting his fifth save since coming to Kansas City in a July 30 trade from Oakland.

Reliever Nick Sandlin made his first major league start for Cleveland in the opener. The right-hander hadn't started a game since his junior year at Southern Miss in 2018.

Royals: LHP Will Smith (back spasms) was placed on the 15-day injured list, one day after he allowed five runs in one inning against Philadelphia. Quatraro said Smith's back issue has “been lingering for a while.”

Guardians: RHP Alex Cobb (broken fingernail) didn't have any problems while throwing a bullpen session Sunday. He's scheduled to throw live batting practice Tuesday. Cobb was acquired at the trade deadline from San Francisco.

Guardians RHP Gavin Williams (2-6, 5.13 ERA) starts Tuesday against Royals RHP Michael Lorenzen (7-6, 3.47), who threw seven scoreless innings in his most recent outing.

⚾ Royals sweep Monday doubleheader

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — The Pretty Prairie High School football team hopes to keep the momentum going into the 2024 season that it ended the 2023 year with.

The Bulldogs finished last year with a 2-7 record, but those two wins came in the final two games of the season.

Although Pretty Prairie lost a lot of talent from last season, third-year head coach Blake Lee is excited about this year.

"We've had a lot of really good effort early on," Lee said. "It's been awesome to see. We lost some key pieces from an offense that struggled some last year, but really came on strong late. These guys this year have stepped up to the challenge and brought great energy out, especially with the heat we've had so far."

&nbsp;One of the big reasons the Bulldogs thrived late in the season was the change of the offense.

"We switched up our offense," Lee said. "We went from a pure zone scheme back to a gap scheme. We're ready to take up 40 seconds off the play clock every play and shorten the game."

The Bulldogs will have a young quarterback behind center.

"We've got a sophomore out after sitting out his freshman year," Lee said. "Emmett Harbaugh will play quarterback for us, he's picking up things really quick."

Pretty Prairie will have it's leading rusher back from last season in sophomore fullback Weston Smyth.

"He's a rodeo kid," Lee said. "He's a smash mouth kid, he loves to run into people. That's his favorite thing to do. He could have an open field on the left and somebody on the right, he'd run to the right and go hit them."

&nbsp;The reason for the Bulldogs changing the offense is in honor of the 1993 state championship team, which Pretty Prairie honored last fall.

"They ran it, so we kind of put it in a little bit to honor them and give them credit," Lee said. "We ran it a couple times in practice and the coaching staff all thought it looked pretty good. I like the zone scheme, but sometimes high school kids just need to know to run to this hole and we're just going to go. I think our kids really liked that and we kind of just went with it and it really worked."

Defensively the Bulldogs will mix that up some this year with its four-man front.

"Christian Chandler is going to make plays without making tackles from his defensive end spot by turning guys in," Lee said. "Weston Smyth at the middle linebacker will make plays for us. Rylan Reyes is a big sophomore that will turn guys in and make plays for us, as well."

The Bulldogs will do the best it can with 13 total players out for football.

"The dropdown to 8-Man Division II has been really good for us," Lee said. "Our girls programs at Pretty Prairie have been really good over the past several years, but we're low in boys numbers."

Pretty Prairie will open the season on the road with defending state champion, Lyndon.&nbsp;

"It's going to be a dogfight," Lee said. "We can step up there and let people know that we are here. We are ready to go this year."

CLEVELAND (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. homered leading off the eighth inning to break a tie as the Kansas City Royals pulled closer to Cleveland in the AL Central with a 4-3 victory over the Guardians in the opener of a day-night doubleheader Monday.

Witt connected on a 0-1 pitch from rookie Hunter Gaddis (4-3), driving it 413 feet into the left-field bleachers for his 27th homer of the season — and his 11th in 34 games since the All-Star break.

Witt came in batting .417 since the break, the fourth-highest average (with at least 125 at-bats) in the second half since World War II. Only Ted Williams (.454), Ichiro Suzuki (.429) and George Brett (.421) have hit higher.

MJ Melendez belted a three-run homer and made a sensational catch in left field for the Royals, who pulled within two games of the first-place Guardians. Cleveland has led the division since April 14.

It was the first of seven games over the next 10 days between the Guardians and Royals.

Logan Allen is set to be recalled from Triple-A Columbus to start Game 2 for Cleveland against Royals right-hander Alec Marsh.

Kansas City starter Cole Ragans was lifted while leading 3-2 lead in the fifth inning because of cramping in his left calf and hamstring.

After issuing a leadoff walk, Ragans was replaced by closer James McArthur, who got two outs before intentionally walking Josh Naylor.

Rookie Jhonkensy Noel followed with a shot toward the corner in left. Melendez raced across the grass and was able to snag it with a headfirst catch before sliding across the warning track to save at least two runs.

Melendez’s 17th homer gave the Royals a 3-2 lead in the fourth.

Vinnie Pasquantino reached when Cleveland shortstop Tyler Freeman couldn’t corral his pop to shallow left and Perez followed with a single. Melendez then lined a 0-1 pitch off the railing just above the right-field wall.

The Guardians scored twice in the second with help from Ragans, who walked in a run with the bases loaded. Cleveland’s second run scored on a passed ball by catcher Salvador Perez, who appeared to get crossed up by Ragans.

Reliever Nick Sandlin made his first major league start for Cleveland in the opener and pitched one inning. The right-hander hadn’t started a game since his junior year at Southern Miss in 2018, when he went 10-0.

Royals: LHP Will Smith (back spasms) was placed on the 15-day injured list, one day after he allowed five runs in one inning against Philadelphia. Manager Matt Quatraro said Smith’s back issue has “been lingering for a while.”

Guardians: RHP Alex Cobb (broken fingernail) didn’t have any problems while throwing a bullpen session Sunday. He’s scheduled to throw live batting practice Tuesday. Cobb was acquired at the trade deadline from San Francisco. The teams completed the swap Monday, with Cleveland sending INF Nate Furman to the Giants.

Smith-Schuster was released from the Patriots earlier this month, one year into his three-year, $25 million contract. He played one season in Kansas City in 2022 before that deal, catching 78 passes for 933 yards and three touchdowns while helping them reach the Super Bowl, where he caught seven passes for 53 yards in a 38-35 win over the Eagles.

The Chiefs had one of the least-productive wide receiver groups in the NFL last season, when they beat the 49ers for their second straight Super Bowl title. They tried to rectify it by signing Marquise Brown in free agency and using a first-round pick on Xavier Worthy, but Brown’s availability for the start of the season is in question after he dislocated his shoulder in the preseason.

The Chiefs also have Rashee Rice, a breakout star a year ago, who has been dealing with legal problems in Texas. At this point it appears that there will be no NFL suspension before the start of the season, but that could happen eventually.

Justin Watson, Skyy Moore and Mecole Hardman also are likely to make the team when rosters are trimmed Tuesday, but that leaves a seventh wide receiver spot available. Kadarius Toney has dealt with penalties, mental mistakes and dropped passes in his time in Kansas City, while Justyn Ross has been unable to seize the job when given chances in the preseason.

Smith-Schuster would provide another veteran presence in an otherwise young wide receiver room. He’s caught 430 passes for 5,048 yards and 30 touchdowns during seven seasons in the league, the first five of them spent with Pittsburgh.

The 27-year-old’s best season was 2018, when he made the Pro Bowl with 111 catches for 1,426 yards and seven scores.

WICHITA, Kan. &mdash; Wichita State was picked second in the American Athletic Conference preseason poll announced Monday. With the departure of 2023 conference champion SMU to the ACC, The American now has 13 teams. The AAC has also brought back the postseason conference tournament, which will take place in Wichita from November 22-24. The winner of the conference tournament receives the AAC&apos;s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament field. Stout and Strand both earned preseason accolades after strong 2023 campaigns. Stout was named Second Team All-American Athletic Conference, hitting .347 for the third-best percentage in the American Athletic Conference. The native of Fowler, Kansas averaged 2.42 kills per set, ranking third among middles in the AAC, and had 14 matches with double-digit kills. She was nearly unstoppable in the NIVC tournament, earning a spot on the All-Tournament team with 47 kills at a .438 hitting percentage. Defensively, Stout established a new career high with 120.0 total blocks, averaging 0.95 per set. Strand was&nbsp;named Second Team All-American Athletic Conference and Honorable Mention All-Region North, the first Wichita State setter to earn All-Region honors since Emily Hiebert in 2017. She was at her best during the Shockers run to the NIVC championship, securing NIVC Most Valuable Player after averaging 11.2 assists per set over the course of WSU&apos;s five matches. The transfer from UC San Diego started all 34 matches and played in all 128 sets, pacing the conference and ranking&nbsp;fifth nationally with 1,340 assists, the sixth-most in a single season in program history and third-most in the rally scoring era. Keegan Bradley goes from last man in to BMW Championship winner and on to East Lake

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (AP) — Keegan Bradley has gone from the last man in the BMW Championship to the winner. He held off mistake-prone Adam Scott, Ludvig Aberg and Sam Burns to win at Castle Pines. And it changed everything so quickly for the Ryder Cup captain. Bradley went from No. 50 in the FedEx Cup to the fourth seed at the Tour Championship. He'll start four shots behind in a chase for the $25 million bonus. He also enters the conversation for a Presidents Cup pick for Montreal next month. Bradley is the first Ryder Cup captain to win on tour in nine years.

Lydia Ko completes 'Cinderella-like story' by winning Women's British Open soon after Olympic gold

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (AP) — Lydia Ko has captured her third major title and first in eight years by winning the Women's British Open by two strokes at the home of golf at St. Andrews. It capped a summer when she also took gold at the Olympic Games. The 27-year-old New Zealander made birdie at the storied 18th hole on the Old Course to shoot 3-under 69 and finish ahead of top-ranked Nelly Korda, defending champion Lilia Vu and two-time champion Jiyai Shin. That quartet of past or present No. 1s shared the lead at one point down the stretch. It's been a golden summer for Ko, who qualified for the Hall of Fame by winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics.

NEW YORK (AP) — Tennis fans who can't decide which players have the best shot at doing well at the U.S. Open aren't the only ones. Even the players themselves are not sure who will be at their best on New York's hard courts when the year's last Grand Slam tournament begins Monday. There is the usual uncertainty that comes at the U.S. Open thanks to the vagaries of injuries and the grind of a long season. One additional factor this time could be all the surface-switching: Tennis at the Summer Olympics was on courts at Roland Garros, also the French Open site. So players went from clay in Paris to grass at Wimbledon, then back to clay, before shifting to hard courts.

(AP) — Lathan Norton scored from second base on an overthrow at first as Lake Mary, Florida, rallied Sunday to beat Taiwan 2-1 in eight innings and claim the Little League World Series championship. This is the first championship in nine tries for Florida, which also came from behind in its 10-7 semifinal win over Texas on Saturday, scoring five runs in its final at-bat. Taiwan was a dominant team at the LLWS from 1969, when it won its first championship, to 1996, when it claimed its 17th. But it had only made the title game once since, in 2009, a loss to California, before Sunday.

Double Duty: For Danny Jansen, playing for both teams in same game is chance at baseball history

BOSTON (AP) — Boston Red Sox catcher Danny Jansen is enjoying his odd slice of baseball history as he prepares to become the first major league player ever to appear in the same game for both teams. Jansen was in the lineup for the Toronto Blue Jays when their June 26 game in Boston was suspended because of rain. It was scheduled to be made up on Monday, Toronto's first trip back to Fenway Park. In the meantime, Jansen was traded to Boston. Red Sox manager Alex Cora has said he will put Jansen in the lineup when the game resumes.

Fanatics refiles lawsuit against Cardinals' Marvin Harrison Jr., adds father and fraud allegations

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Apparel manufacturer Fanatics has refiled its lawsuit against Arizona Cardinals rookie receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., adding his father, Marvin Harrison Sr., and fraud allegations in addition to breach of contract. The lawsuit was originally filed in New York Supreme Court this spring, claiming Harrison Jr. did not fulfill his obligations from a May 2023 deal he signed with the retailer and estimated the damage in "millions of dollars." The amended lawsuit adds that Harrison Sr. "aided and abetted Harrison Jr.'s fraud on Fanatics."

Former NASCAR champion Martin Truex Jr. is nearly a lock to make the playoffs. It's shaky for others

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Martin Truex Jr. should feel safe heading to Darlington Raceway for the NASCAR Cup Series' regular-season finale. The 2017 series champion has a 58-point cushion in the playoff standings. It's likely enough considering the most any driver could make up is roughly 60. Thirteen of the 16 postseason spots are locked, with Harrison Burton surprisingly securing the latest at Daytona International Speedway. Truex has a strong grasp on one of the remaining three, so NASCAR essentially has two bids up for grabs at the track nicknamed "Too Tough to Tame." It will make for an intriguing race next weekend, with Ty Gibbs, Chris Buescher, Bubba Wallace and Ross Chastain vying for one spot based on points and nearly two dozen others needing to win to get in.

Will Power leads wire-to-wire at Portland to remain in IndyCar championship fight

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Will Power remained in the IndyCar championship hunt with a wire-to-wire victory Sunday at Portland International Raceway. Power started second alongside polesitter Santino Ferrucci. Sixty-six points behind championship leader Alex Palou at the start of the race, Power vowed to be aggressive at the start and drive like three-time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen. The 43-year-old Australian was serious about it, too, as he slid ahead of Ferrucci entering the first turn. Power now trails Palou by 54 points with three races remaining. Palou finished second at a track where his win last year wrapped up a second IndyCar title.

Michigan receives notice of allegations from NCAA related to sign-stealing investigation

Michigan has received the final version of a notice of allegations from the NCAA related to an investigation into an in-person scouting and sign-stealing operation being run by a football staffer. The NCAA and Michigan both confirmed that the NOA had been received by the school. Michigan previously received a draft of the NOA that included allegations of violations by former head coach Jim Harbaugh, current head coach Sherrone Moore, former recruiting analyst Connor Stalions and several other members of the staff. Michigan has 90 days to respond to the allegations in the notice.

MIDLAND, Texas—The Wichita Wind Surge lost the series finale 4-1 to the Midland RockHounds at Momentum Bank Ballpark. After four straight runs scored for the RockHounds, all Wichita managed on offense was a bases-loaded walk in the seventh.

Shane McGuire stroked a two-run double to left field in the bottom of the third. McGuire had each of the first two hits for Midland, and both of them were two-baggers.

Daniel Susac left the yard on a solo home run, his 11th of the season, into the Wind Surge bullpen in left field to create a 3-0 RockHounds lead in the home half of the fifth. A sacrifice fly by Euribiel Angeles went deep enough to left to score Henry Bolte to add another run in the next inning.

Wichita loaded the bases on a double and two walks in the top of the seventh, and&nbsp;Noah Cardenas&nbsp;stepped up to the plate. Cardenas saw seven pitches and drew the third walk of the inning to bring in the first run for the Wind Surge, though they still trailed 4-1 with men at all three bases after the following batter struck out.

Over the eighth and ninth innings, Wichita went six up and six down, losing the series against Midland.

Cory Lewis&nbsp;took the loss to become 1-4 on the season. Over three and one-third innings, he surrendered two earned runs on four hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

⚾ Wind Surge drop series final to Midland Sunday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kyle Schwarber had two hits and three RBI and Garrett Stubbs had a career-best four hits to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to an 11-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

After Garrett Stubbs opened the third inning with a triple into the right-field corner, Schwarber hit a double to right-center. Alec Bohm's two-out hit scored Schwarber, giving the Phillies a 2-0 lead. Schwarber added RBI on a bases-loaded grounder in the fourth and a single that capped a three-run sixth inning.

Philadelphia scored five in the eighth, highlighted by Bohm’s two-run single and Nick Castellanos’ two-run homer, his 17th of the season.

Needing a home run to complete the cycle, Stubbs singled in the eighth and was hit by a pitch in the ninth.

“I’ve never been mad to get a single, but sure as (heck) was trying to hit a homer,” Stubbs said. “(Today) was about as good as you can ever feel. Obviously, it helped us get to 11 runs and kind of cruise toward the last few innings.”

Kolby Allard (2-0) worked five innings, allowing two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.

“The changeup was really good today,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. “The first two guys get on in the first inning and he works himself out of it. That tells me something about him.”

Kansas City’s Seth Lugo (14-8) allowed six runs and 11 hits.

“A lot of contact today, so give them credit,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “But it was a very unfortunate run for Seth because a lot of that contact wasn’t hard.”

Lugo has surrendered at least four runs in five of his last seven starts.

“It’s been a tough run of luck,” Quatraro said. “But he’s throwing the ball fine.”

The Phillies went 7 for 14 with runners-in-scoring position.

“It was pretty frustrating,” Lugo said. “I felt like I was making pitches. I wanted a little bit more swing-and-miss, but that’s a good lineup.”

After matching a season high with 18 hits in Saturday's 11-2 win, the Phillies banged out 16 hits on Sunday and 45 hits while outscoring the Royals 26-12 to take two games of the three-game series.

“We got our approaches back,” Thomson said. “Our at-bats the entire series were really good.”

Bobby Witt Jr., Maikel Garcia and MJ Melendez hit solo homers for the Royals.

Tyler Gentry made his major league debut for the Royals, flying out as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning.

Position player Garrett Hampson pitched a hitless ninth for Kansas City.

Phillies recalled Allard from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and optioned RHP Max Lazar to Lehigh Valley.

Royals OF Hunter Renfroe placed on 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain. OF Tyler Gentry recalled from Triple-A Omaha.

Phillies: RHP Zack Wheeler (12-6, 2.73 ERA) gets the start for their home series opener against Houston's Justin Verlander (3-3, 3.92) on Monday.

Royals LHP Cole Ragans (10-8, 3.31) and RHP Alec Marsh (7-7, 4.41) will face the Guardians in day/night doubleheader. Host Cleveland has not named starters.
