KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez and Hunter Renfroe hit two-run homers during a five-run third inning Friday night, and the Kansas City Royals went on to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-4 in the opener of an interleague series between playoff contenders.

Perez parlayed his success in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-salvador-perez-wiffle-ball-kids-6d55a6c8be6430a3e0a6db016d83f5ce">a Wiffle ball game against neighborhood kids</a>&nbsp;a day earlier into a three-RBI night. Paul DeJong and Vinnie Pasquantino also drove in runs, helping the Royals close within a game of first-place Cleveland in the AL Central.

“The Wiffle ball yesterday got me ready for today,” joked Perez, who also went over 900 RBIs for his career. “Pretty good night.”

Michael Wacha (11-6) ran his winning streak to seven straight decisions, allowing two runs on six hits in six innings while striking out five. He hasn't lost since June 22, and he hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in a start since June 4.

Lucas Erceg worked around a leadoff double in the ninth for his 10th save and fourth since his trade to Kansas City.

“It was hard work," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “They're always going to make you work. That's a talented team.”

The troubles continued for the Phillies' Taijuan Walker (3-5), though. The veteran allowed six runs on eight hits and a walk in just three innings, and has now surrendered 30 runs on 43 hits and 18 walks over 38 innings in his eight starts.

“In the third, everything was in the middle of the plate. It was command,” said Phillies manager Rob Thomson, who declined to say whether Walker would make his next scheduled start. “It's more attacking the hitters, but then you don't want to be in the middle of the plate all the time. It's one of those things. He gets behind and then he has to come to the middle.”

Kansas City certainly made it a rude return to the area for Thomson. He played his college ball down Interstate 70 at Kansas, where his .369 average from 1983-85 remains tied for the fifth-best in school history.

Nick Castellanos, Bryson Stott and Brandon Marsh drove in the runs for Philadelphia.

The Royals began a stretch of 20 games against teams that currently hold playoff positions, including the Phillies, who began the day with a six-game cushion in the NL East. And they did it in style, racing to a 6-1 lead after their big third inning.

The Royals were still leading 7-2 in the eighth when Philadelphia tried to rally off Kris Bubic. Bryce Harper, Alec Bohm and Castellanos reached on one-out singles, and Harper scored on a wild pitch. But Bubic bounced back to get Stott to hit a sacrifice fly and got J.T. Realmuto on a groundout, preserving the Royals' three-run lead.

Erceg handled it from there as Kansas City won for the seventh time in its last eight games.

“It was nice to get the first game out of the series for sure,” Wacha said. “We're not looking ahead too far. Our mentality is to win today and worry about tomorrow when it gets here. We all feel we have a really good team to do something special.”

Phillies: OF Austin Hayes (left hamstring strain) was reinstated from the injured list and started in left field. OF Cal Stevenson was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley to make room for him on the roster.

Royals: RHP Hunter Harvey (back tightness) was planning to see doctors Friday after having two good days in the hopes of formulating a throwing plan. He received an injection Tuesday after experiencing a setback a day earlier.

Phillies: LHP Ranger Suárez is expected to return Saturday night from the injured list, where he's been since late July with lower back soreness.

Royals: RHP Brady Singer (9-8, 3.18 ERA) will try to build off six shutout innings against the Reds.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – Freshman outside hitter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/graf_viktoria_tc85">Viktoria Graf</a>&nbsp;combined for 23 kills while sophomore middle blocker&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/johnson_precious_mdlb">Precious Johnson</a>&nbsp;had 11 kills and 13 blocks to pace the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team of a split of matches on Opening Day 2024 on Friday.

Playing in the Reiver Classic at Iowa Western Community College this weekend, the Blue Dragons opened the season with a 25-21, 25-21, 25-15 victory over Jefferson College in the first match on Friday. Hutchinson then dropped a tight for-set battle with tournament host Iowa Western, 23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 21-25.

The Blue Dragons (1-1) will complete play in the Reiver Classic early on Saturday with a 9 a.m. match against No. 3-nationally ranked Northeastern Junior College and then an 11 a.m. match against Western Nebraska. Both matches will be played on the IWCC auxiliary court and no video streams will be available for either match on Saturday.

JEFFERSON RECAP The Blue Dragons used a balanced offensive attack to win two tight sets and dominate the third against Jefferson College in Friday's opening match.

Making her Blue Dragon debut, Graf led Hutchinson with a match-high nine kills and three block assists.

Johnson posted career highs wit six kills and six total blocks (three solo blocks and three block assists.

Suber finished with 33 set assists and five kills.

Saturday's Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team's neutral site match against Otero College has been canceled.

The game was scheduled to be played at Liberal High School in Liberal on Saturday.

Because of excessive heat forecast for Saturday – the high in Liberal is supposed to be 103 degrees – the game was called off.

The 20th-ranked Blue Dragons, who defeated NOC-Enid 6-1 on Thursday in the season opener at the Salthawk Sports Complex, will next play on Wednesday when Hutchinson plays host to Garden City in the Jayhawk Conference opener in a 6 p.m. game at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The Hutchinson-Otero game isn't expected to be rescheduled.

LANGDON, Kan. — The Fairfield High School football team is looking to build on a strong finish to last season, as the Falcons gear up for 2024.

The Falcons finished the 2023 season on a high note with a 56-46 win over Hartford, the lone win for Fairfield last fall. The win ended a 17-game losing streak for the Falcons.

"That win summed up our entire season," Fairfield head coach Kyle Finder said. "It was a hard fought game, and our guys really didn't know how to celebrate. We had to take some time to almost teach them how to celebrate with what was going on. The smiles on their face meant everything and it was a great way to end the season."

Fairfield will open the new year with Hartford, and for the second straight game, it will be on the road.&nbsp;

"It's kind of a double edge sword opening up with them," Finder said. "Yes, we beat them last season, but they were a young team and pushed us to the end. They return everybody from last season and do some things that can give us fits. They're hungry to avenge the loss and I just hope we're not looking past them. We've never really had a whole lot of success, so I just hope we're not taking this one for granted.

The Falcons return starting quarterback Connor Fowler who looks to have a strong senior campaign.

"Connor is our workhorse," Finder said. "We rely on him to do so much both offensively and defensively. This year we're hoping to increase his production while decreasing his reps. There are some guys that we feel like can step up and make Connor more productive. Some of those guys include William McIver, Brodie Snodgrass and Gage Brown."

Finder says the offensive line is mostly intact from last season and will be a big part of the success this season.

"We'll look for those guys to pave holes that anybody can run through," Finder said. "Some of those guys include Garrett Lanning, Chase Combs, Gavin Foster, Lukas and Lane Schwab, and then Braeden Witt will fill in as well."

The Falcons will host a jamboree on Friday, Aug. 30 with St. John, Bucklin and Kinsley.

"We want to continue to build on the successes that we had at the end of last season," Finder said. "We're nine months apart from the end of last season to now. We run a simple enough offense that I feel like we can pick up where we left off, and then just fly around on defense, and most importantly, I just want the guys to have fun."

Finder says his team always puts up a fight, no matter their record.

"We may have been 1-8 last season, but it was one of the most enjoyable times I've had as a coach," Finder said. "The guys have the willing to get better each and every day, they always put in the effort day in and day out. We didn't hang our heads after some close or tough losses, we just were back to work on Monday. We continued to get better as the season went on and I'm really excited to see what this season holds for these guys."

🏈 HSFB Preview: Fairfield

The NFL season begins in less that two weeks when the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs host the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 5.

Here’s a couple of big storylines as the games that count in the standings rapidly approach:

The Chiefs-Ravens game kicks the season off on a Thursday night and then the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers meet in Sao Paulo on Friday night, Sept. 6,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/packers-eagles-brazil-e59d5c05671c01cde3a27a8f5ea8deb2">for the first regular season game played in Brazil</a>. It’s the first time since 1970 that the NFL has had a Friday night game as part of its opening week schedule.

Most of the Week 1 games will be on Sunday, Sept. 8, followed by the season’s first Monday night matchup between the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers.

Sept. 8, Rams at Lions: The game features the quarterback matchup of Jared Goff vs. Matthew Stafford. Stafford was the longtime QB for the Lions before getting traded to the Rams for Goff and then leading L.A. to a Super Bowl title in 2022. Goff&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lions-rams-score-playoffs-stafford-goff-f5fd70546e6e7aa2f1c1da20687b8d02">led the Lions past the Rams in the playoffs last season</a>. Both QBs performed well in last year’s playoff matchup and more fireworks are expected in Week 1.

Sept. 9, Jets at 49ers: This should mark the return of New York quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who lasted just three official snaps last year before&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/aaron-rodgers-new-york-jets-2fcf29ffc02a439bbff0914cb1d2abdc">an Achilles injury cut his 2023 season short</a>. The four-time MVP will face a tough test against a 49ers defense that’s been among the league’s best for the past few seasons.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sept. 15, Bears at Texans: If all goes well, this should be the second NFL game for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bengals-bears-score-8b46acaaa86ed419aacd98bf59b60786">rookie quarterback Caleb Williams</a>, who was taken by the Bears with the No. 1-overall pick out of USC. Williams gets a Week 2 matchup against Texans QB C.J. Stroud, who was the AP’s Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023.

Nov. 25, Ravens at Chargers: This one is later in the schedule, but features a coaching matchup between brothers John and Jim Harbaugh. Jim was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/la-chargers-jim-harbaugh-2b8eb8ef9e0a934b066936c6e57e64f1">hired by the Chargers</a>&nbsp;in the offseason after leading Michigan to a national championship. The action on the field should be good as well — Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson and L.A.'s Justin Herbert are two of the league’s top quarterbacks.

The NFL has overhauled its kickoffs, with the new format using elements of rules from the XFL and tweaking them for use&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-owners-meetings-new-kickoff-rules-fc1bf4fddc86ef03cf6fbc44ba6c26a0">in the NFL beginning this fall</a>. The rules will be in play for one season on a trial basis and then be subject to renewal in 2025.

🏈 The NFL season is approaching. Here’s a look at some of the big games and rules changes

NICKERSON, Kan. — Nickerson High School football coach Taylor Bauman took advantage of the first possible second his team could practice to open the 2024 season, at midnight, Monday.

"It was a lot of fun," Bauman said. "This was the first year we've done it and I think the guys really enjoyed it. It was kind of a spur of the moment idea I had this summer and talked with the coaching staff and some of the guys and they were all in for it. It's something we get to do together as a team and an experience you only get as a high schooler."

The Panthers finished the 2023 season with a 1-8 record, but Bauman likes the experience his young team has had the past couple of seasons.&nbsp;

"We've talked a lot over the offseason about what it's going to take to get back to where Nickerson has been in the past," Bauman said. "Our guys know what it takes to be successful, and we're looking for the guys to take that next step to truly be successful. We can do it, we know what we need to, but we need to make sure we're taking that next step when things get hard. We need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable."

Bauman says the experience will help heading into this season, especially on the offense.

"We had some young guys that had to fill in last year when maybe they weren't ready, after some injuries to seniors," Bauman said. "So the benefit to that is now they're all coming back. We had nine starters last year that were either freshmen or sophomores. That experience will really come in handy this year as we continue to grow."

The Panthers' defense should be better this year, too.

"We had some guys that're seniors this year that stepped up as juniors last year," Bauman said. "Keastin Abernathy is a beast out there on the defensive edge. Addrick Nelson and Landen Hays back there as safeties, between those three seniors out there, they kind of just run the defense."

The class 3A district the Panthers had been in the past two seasons was arguably the toughest one in the state of Kansas with Andale, Cheney, Pratt and Smoky Valley.

"Andale and Cheney are obviously two powerhouses," Bauman said. "Cheney overtook Andale for the 3A title, but those two have won the past two titles. When you're going up against those teams every week as freshmen and sophomores, it makes you grow up pretty quick."

Nickerson will open the season Sept. 6 at Conway Springs, the defending class 1A state champions.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragon Athletic Department has released its home game themes for the 2024 Blue Dragon football season.

Blue Dragon football, the 2020/21 NJCAA Division I national champion, is set to host six home games this fall, including a 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29 kickoff against the 2021 NJCAA national champion New Mexico Military Institute.

INMAN, Kan. — The Inman High School football team is young, but optimistic heading into the 2024 season.

"We're going to be young, but I think we're as talented as we've been in the state runs," head coach Lance Sawyer said. "I think as long as we trust the process and continue to get better everyday, I think we'll be OK."

Sawyer enters his ninth season as the head coach of the Teutons and 18th year overall as a head coach. He has guided Inman to a 50-36 overall in his first eight seasons, while compiling an overall record of 84-85.

The Teutons were hit hard by graduation and departures following the 2022 season, leading to a 3-6 mark in 2023. Inman finished the 2022 year with an 11-2 record, falling to St. Marys in the 1A state title game.&nbsp;

Sawyer is excited to see what the offense can do this season, especially with the speed in the backfield.

"We might have as much speed as we've had in those state runs," Sawyer said. "Korbyn McClellan is as fast as Harrison Brunk and Tanner Heckel, so he could be a really special kid. I think offensively as a whole we'll be young, but we'll be pretty talented."

As far as the defense goes, Sawyer thinks that may be more of a question mark.

"The defense is really yet to be known," Sawyer said. "I think we'll be OK, we may switch up schemes from what we've done in the past to fit our personnel better. I think we'll have a strong defensive line with Cooper Wiens, Evan Kamczynski and Gage Sisson will all help anchor that unit. The linebacker group will be good with Dylan Larson, Sebastian Martinez, Carson Seidl and Braxton Malloy."

The Teutons open the season Sept. 6 at home against Trinity Catholic before traveling to Wichita to face Trinity Academy on Sept. 13. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Teutons and the Knights.

"Everybody in our league had to go find one game outside to fill our schedules," Sawyer said. "So the Heart of America paired up with the Central Plains League and us and Wichita Trinity each had an opening in Week 2."

Sawyer is very familiar with Trinity Academy head coach Trey Hall.

"My first game ever coaching is now their coach," Sawyer said. "He was at Sunrise Academy 18 years ago and I was at White City 18 years ago, so we'll meet up again."

🏈 HSFB Preview: Inman

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson High School football team is gearing up for the 2024 season, and the Salthawks will rely heavily on its senior class heading into the new year.

The Salthawks finished the 2023 season with a 7-3 record, falling to Maize South in the second round of the class 5A playoffs, 21-20.

"We're a bit thin compared to previous years, but I think we have really good football players," Salthawks seventh year head coach Mike Vernon said. "We're going to have to make sure that we take care of them and they don't get hurt along the way. We have a pretty high ceiling, just got to make sure everyone stays healthy."

The Salthawks may also have to turn to some of the youth on the team at certain points this season.

"During the season we need to make sure that we develop some depth and that will be where this season is made," Vernon said.&nbsp;

Vernon is very optimistic about his defense coming into the year.

"Our defense is going to be pretty dang good," Vernon said. "Our linebackers are all back, and we need to have a couple of defensive linemen step up, but I think that will happen. Secondary will be really good."

Although starting quarterback from last year, Robert Hunter, transferred to Wichita East, Vernon is excited for what the offense can accomplish this fall.

"We've got three offensive linemen that are phenomenal," Vernon said. "We'll have two guys that are going to have to work their way through it, but I know they'll do a great job. Fullback Kade Smith is going to have a really good year. He's a hard runner and just does amazing things."

Senior Terrell King will miss time early in the season with a broken foot, but Vernon is confident the all-state selection will be back sooner than later.

"He'll be back second week hopefully," Vernon said. "He's a phenomenal football player, maybe the best football player in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League. Once we get him back and make sure to keep him healthy then good things will happen."

The Salthawks will have back-to-back home games to open the season. Andover Central comes to Gowans Stadium on Sept. 6 and Valley Center on Sept. 13.

"It's always nice to stay home, especially at the beginning when things are so new, especially for younger starters and younger kids," Vernon said. "Andover Central and Valley Center are both really good programs and it will be a good start for us. It will get us really ramped up for later on when we get into Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League play."

Hutch High opens AVCTL play at Maize in week three and then a rare Thursday night game on Sept. 26 at Salina South.

"I'll have to call up some of the guys in the Kansas City area that are used to playing Thursday night games and see how we want to attack that," Vernon said. "I think this is probably going to be something that's going to be in the future anyways, so might as well get used to it now and start figuring it out."

The Salthawks have been playing in a jamboree in the week prior to the first week of the regular season, but that will not be happening this season.

"We were in with McPherson and Valley Center last year," Vernon said. "Valley Center didn't want to be in a jamboree when they'll play us the second week, so we decided with how thin we are we'll just scrimmage ourselves and make sure that we're ready to go for that first game."

 </figure>SEAN BOSTON Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson High School football team is gearing up for the 2024 season, and the Salthawks will rely heavily on its senior class heading into the new year.The Salthawks finished the 2023 season with a 7-3 record, falling to Maize South in the second round of the class 5A playoffs, 21-20."We're a bit thin compared to previous years, but I think we have really good football players," Salthawks seventh year head coach Mike Vernon said. "We're going to have to make sure that we take care of them and they don't get hurt along the way. We have a pretty high ceiling, just got to make sure everyone stays healthy."The Salthawks may also have to turn to some of the youth on the team at certain points this season."During the season we need to make sure that we develop some depth and that will be where this season is made," Vernon said.&nbsp;Vernon is very optimistic about his defense coming into the year."Our defense is going to be pretty dang good," Vernon said. "Our linebackers are all back, and we need to have a couple of defensive linemen step up, but I think that will happen. Secondary will be really good."Although starting quarterback from last year, Robert Hunter, transferred to Wichita East, Vernon is excited for what the offense can accomplish this fall."We've got three offensive linemen that are phenomenal," Vernon said. "We'll have two guys that are going to have to work their way through it, but I know they'll do a great job. Fullback Kade Smith is going to have a really good year. He's a hard runner and just does amazing things."Senior Terrell King will miss time early in the season with a broken foot, but Vernon is confident the all-state selection will be back sooner than later."He'll be back second week hopefully," Vernon said. "He's a phenomenal football player, maybe the best football player in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League. Once we get him back and make sure to keep him healthy then good things will happen."The Salthawks will have back-to-back home games to open the season. Andover Central comes to Gowans Stadium on Sept. 6 and Valley Center on Sept. 13."It's always nice to stay home, especially at the beginning when things are so new, especially for younger starters and younger kids," Vernon said. "Andover Central and Valley Center are both really good programs and it will be a good start for us. It will get us really ramped up for later on when we get into Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League play."Hutch High opens AVCTL play at Maize in week three and then a rare Thursday night game on Sept. 26 at Salina South."I'll have to call up some of the guys in the Kansas City area that are used to playing Thursday night games and see how we want to attack that," Vernon said. "I think this is probably going to be something that's going to be in the future anyways, so might as well get used to it now and start figuring it out."The Salthawks have been playing in a jamboree in the week prior to the first week of the regular season, but that will not be happening this season."We were in with McPherson and Valley Center last year," Vernon said. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2024-25/bios/marx_katharina_gwqa">Katharina Marx</a>&nbsp;scored a career-high six points Thursday night and provided a needed wake-up call for the 20th-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team in its 2024 season opener.

With Hutchinson trailing by a goal just 7 minutes into its matchup with Northern Oklahoma College-Enid, Marx scored the game-tying goal and then provided the assist on&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2024-25/bios/artmann_kira_vs31">Kira Artmann</a>'s go-ahead goal, leading the Blue Dragons to a 6-1 victory.

Opening their 20th season on Thursday night, the Blue Dragons (1-0) are now 16-4 in season openers and 17-3 in home openers. The Blue Dragons are now 2-0 all-time against NOC-Enid (0-1).

Hutchinson's neutral-site game against Otero College scheduled for Saturday in Liberal as been postponed because of forecasted dangerous heat. The Blue Dragons return to action next Wednesday, opening Jayhawk Conference play vs. Garden City at the Salthawk Sports Complex in a 6 p.m. kickoff.

Marx's career-high six-point game – two goals and two assists – bested her 2023 Blue Dragon debut when she had a five-point effort against Northeastern Junior College. Marx posted her third career two-goal game and her second career multi-assist game.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2024-25/bios/rogers_haley_tzll">Haley Rogers</a>&nbsp;had a goal and an assist for the Blue Dragons. Making her Blue Dragon debut after missing 2023 with an injury, Rogers made a bit of Blue Dragon history on Thursday. She became only the second Blue Dragon player ever to score directly off her own corner kick attempt. The other came from Blue Dragon Hall of Famer Alicia Robinson, who did so to score the game-winning goal in overtime of the 2010 Region 6 Tournament championship game over Butler.

Marx had a goal and two assists in a five-goal first-half for the Blue Dragons that saw five different Hutchinson players connect for goals.

After the Jets took a 1-0 lead just 7:07 into the first half, the Blue Dragons took control of the game from that point, out-shooting NOC-Enid 17-0 over the remainder of the game. For the game, the Blue Dragons out-shot the Jets 36-3 and created 13 corner-kick attempts. Thirteen different Blue Dragons attempted shots in the game.

The Blue Dragons got off to a shaky start. The Jets' early pressure led to a turnover in the Hutchinson defensive end that Enid's Alyssa Harvey turned into an unassisted goal and a 1-0 Jet lead with 37:53 to play in the first half.

That seemed to be the wake-up call the Blue Dragons needed.

Almost immediately after the Jet goal, the Dragons turned the game around. Almost 4 minutes later, Marx tied the game with her first goal coming from a&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2024-25/bios/salkeld_jessica_p5by">Jessica Salkeld</a>&nbsp;assist with 34:54 to play in the half.

The Blue Dragons took the lead 15 minutes later when Marx made a strong run around the left side of the Enid defense and put a pass right in front of the next for Artmann to hammer home for a 2-1 lead with 18:01 remaining in the first half.

The Dragons made it 3-1 after Marx made another strong run at the right side of the goal and delivered a perfect pass to the left side of the goal that Edwards scored from with 13:46 to play in the half.

Hutchinson's fourth goal came on a free kick where Pokrandt lofted a kick from about 40 yards out and near the sideline over Jet goalkeeper Karen Avalos for a 4-1 lead with 11:16 remaining in the game.

The Dragons made it a five-goal half when Rogers bent in her corner kick attempt, which came from the left corner of the goal into the upper-right corner for a 5-1 lead with 3:36 left in the first half.

Hutchinson's lone goal of the second half came after a pair of Rogers' shot were blocked on Jet defenders, but the ball rolled right to Marx, who blasted a shot from eight feet out for a 6-1 lead with 25:30 to play in the game.

Sophomore goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2024-25/bios/slothower_karsyn_oxul">Karsyn Slothower</a>&nbsp;was credited with the win – her 13th career victory. ⚽ Marx sparks No. 20 HutchCC to season-opening triumph

When asked to analyze the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team's overall play in 2023, head coach Delice Downing hit upon several key points that came up as negatives.

Point 1 – A Lack of consistent passing, which doesn't allow team to transition from defense to offense effectively and not push a middle attack.

Point 2 – Feeding the outside hitters almost exclusively and not utilizing a middle attack.

Point 3 – Production from the right-side hitters.

With those issues in mind, Downing hit the recruiting trail looking to shore up those deficiencies.

"I think we've got the pieces," said the fifth-year Blue Dragon head coach whose team opens the 2024 this weekend at the Iowa Western Reiver Tournament in Council Bluffs, Iowa. "Recruiting is always important, but this year it was extra important. We are going to be very young this year. We are very athletic. We're hungry. Now its going to be about getting them to play smart and buy into the process."

The Blue Dragons open the 2024 season with four stern tests from traditional NJCAA volleyball powers in Jefferson College, Iowa Western, No. 3 Northeastern Junior College and Western Nebraska this weekend.

Just one starter and three reserves return from last season's 24-15 Blue Dragon team that finished fourth in the KJCCC with an 11-5 conference mark. The Blue Dragons were upset in five sets in the opening round of the Region 6 Tournament by Dodge City.

Hutchinson is picked to finish fifth this season in the annual preseason KJCCC Coaches' Poll.

The 2023 Blue Dragons hit .210 as a team and averaged 11.53 kills per set. Defensively, the Dragons averaged 15.18 digs and 2.45 blocks per set.

The lone returning starter is 5-foot-10 middle blocker&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/murphy_mckenzie_tghh">McKenzie Murphy</a>, who hit .293 on 1.26 kills per set. Murphy averaged 1.07 blocks per set in earning all-KJCCC postseason honors as a freshman.

"Kenzie has the most experience coming back," said Downing, who is 87-53 in her first four seasons with the Blue Dragons. "We have to get better at utilizing the middle. Kenzie is explosive and we have other middles who can be effective. Now we have to work to get them the ball."

Sophomore setter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/wilson_shelbi_f4d1">Shelbi Wilson</a>&nbsp;saw limited action in 19 matches last season. She averaged 2.86 assists and 1.17 digs per set. Also back is setter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/stuhlsatz_ryleigh_x8fj">Ryleigh Stuhlsatz</a>&nbsp;and middle&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/johnson_precious_mdlb">Precious Johnson</a>. In limited playing time, Stuhlsatz averaged 0.41 assists per set. Johnson hit .063 and 0.62 kills and 0.86 blocks per set.

Now to the pieces Downing searched for in the recruiting process.

To improve the Dragons' passing, Derby freshman Addy Foster is slated to be the starting libero.

"We wanted to find a libero who can take a lot of seams, take a lot of court and we think we found that in Addy Foster," Downing said. "She is long in the back row and very scrappy."

In addition to Foster in the back row will be freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/sanchez_siani_k5i7">Siani Sanchez</a>&nbsp;and setter-turned-defensive specialist&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/carvalho_beatriz_rmp3">Beatriz Carvalho</a>.

To pick up production on the right pin, Downing is excited to see how 5-foot-10 transfer&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/simmons_tiana_pzqy">Tiana Simmons</a>&nbsp;fits into the rotation. Simmons, who is an instate high school product from Blue Valley High School, did not play at Chaminade University last season.

"When you have a dominant right-side hitter, the game changes," Downing said. "Merritt Beason at Nebraska can dominant from the right side and it changes the game for them. We think we have that in&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/simmons_tiana_pzqy">Tiana Simmons</a>. She definitely going to open the court up more for us."

Downing is also excited to see the development of freshman outside hitter Atlan Proctor, who is an athletic, dynamic hitter from western Canada.

The 2024 Blue Dragons also have some versatile players who will swing between the middle and right side in sophomore transfer&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/oyoyo_genavi_njup">Genavi Oyoyo</a>&nbsp;(Texas-El Paso) and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/follmer_kierny_indv">Kierny Follmer</a>. Also look for freshman outside hitters&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/graf_viktoria_tc85">Viktoria Graf</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/raschen_priscilla_efw5">Priscilla Raschen</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/galey_brooklyn_309m">Brooke Galey</a>&nbsp;as well as freshman setters&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/suber_ellie_z1k4">Ellie Suber</a>&nbsp;and Angela Rupena to make runs for playing time.

Now Downing wants to take those pieces and put together the best rotations possible.

"We are looking for the right core of girls who can play together and be ready for what's to come," Downing said. "This weekend will be a great tournament to do that in. We want to become a family and we want to mature."

The Blue Dragons have an odd schedule this season where the first 16 matches they play will all be on the road. Hutchinson doesn't open at the Sports Arena until September 18 against Dodge City.

"That time is going to be about the growth of our team," Downing said. "By the time we finally play at home, we are going to have a lot of things worked out."

“The guys performed tonight. They performed not only in games but in practice,” Bears coach Matt Eberflus said. “I've always said that, you see in the games what you see in practice every single day out there, and the guys are giving tremendous effort.”
