G. Duane Mowbray, 83, a lifetime McPherson County, KS resident, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 22, 2021, with family by his side at McPherson Hospital. He was a boiler fireman, turbine operator, and maintenance foreman at McPherson Water &amp; Electric and Board of Public Utilities for 46 years, retiring on April 1, 2003. George Duane Mowbray was born on November 1, 1937, at his home in McPherson, KS, the son of Walter and Gladys Ava (Pancost) Mowbray. He graduated from McPherson High School in 1956. On September 4, 1960, Duane was united in marriage to Betty Joyce Briggs at the Andover Lutheran Church, Windom. They celebrated 60 years of marriage before her passing on September 6, 2020. He served in the United States Army as a Medical Corpsman at the Brooke Army Medical Hospital, San Antonio, TX from October 3, 1960 to October 3, 1962. Duane was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he was actively involved in church maintenance for many years. Dolores was born in Garden City, Kansas on June 5, 1932, a daughter of Esther M. (Simon) and Henry George Erker. She attended Liberty elementary school, Riverdale, Kansas, and graduated from Wellington High School, Wellington, Kansas in 1950. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church McPherson, Kansas where she was a member of the Altar Society and was involved with weekly Adoration. Prior to marriage, Dolores worked at Safeway in Wichita in the meat department and was later a homemaker and she took great pride in providing for her family in this manner. Dolores Marie Erker was united in marriage to Raymond Allen Willems on April 7, 1956 at Wichita, Kansas. They established first home together in Wichita, Kansas. This union was blessed with the birth of six children, four daughters and two sons, Roxane, Rhonda, Renee, Rex, Raissa, and Randall. Dolores enjoyed gardening, tending to her flowers, quilting, embroidery work, and putting puzzles together. She volunteered with Meal on Wheels, made many lap quilts for Angel Arms, and tea towels for the Hospital gift shop. She also spending time with her family and has made baby quilts for all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Cox, 91, of Hutchinson, Kansas, passed away Monday, July 19, 2021 at Hospice House of Hutchinson, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born December 20, 1929 in Kanopolis, Kansas to Jesse and Furilla ( Hare) Cox.&nbsp; He served in the United States Air Force and Army National Guard.&nbsp; On January 20, 1951 he married Shirley Haas.&nbsp; Jesse and Shirley were married for 70 years.&nbsp;

Jesse is survived by his wife Shirley, Son Steven ( Linda), daughters Pamela (William) Colvin, Susan Willis, and Lois Debozy ( Matt Maier).&nbsp; Grandchildren Shawn, Jason, Bryan, Jesse, and Cody, 15 great grandchildren, and brother-in-law Law Eugene Haas.

She was a member of United Center Church of God in Christ, Mennonite in Galva, Kansas.

She was united in marriage to Stuart Wedel on September 4, 1960 at Lone Tree Mennonite Church in Galva, Kansas.&nbsp; He survives of the home.

Other survivors include her daughter, Starla (Arlo) Unruh of Galva; sons, Robert (Susan) Wedel of Galva, and Jerry (Marsha) Wedel of Vanceboro, NC; twelve grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Noah Ratzlaff of Moundridge; and sister, Dessie Wiebe of De Smet, SD.

With deepest sorrow, we announce that Ken McGuire, age 62, son, brother, uncle, family member and friend died on Monday, July 19th doing what he absolutely loved…riding his Harley with a friend.

Those who knew Ken, will miss his gift of conversation, positive attitude, kindness, humor, stories, and uncanny ability to make connections with everyone he met. Ken loved a waiting line just so that he could meet someone and get to know their story.

Ken enjoyed so many adventures in life, learned many lessons along the way and always met new friends in the multiple places he lived and worked. Mountain climbing, kayaking, sailing, camping and motor cycle riding were some of his favorite activities.  He worked in appliance repair, as an electrician, building aircraft, semi-trucks, and settled in as a conductor and train engineer for many years with BNSF.  He loved the wildlife and scenery from the engine of a train.

One of Ken’s greatest accomplishments was more than 20 years of “one day at a time” through the support of AA.  Ken had many strong mentors and was a mentor to many others participating in the program.  Everyone in the program was his extended family.

Ken was born in Rochester, Minnesota.  He was part of a very large extended family including 16 aunts and Uncles and 100 plus first cousins.  He thought the world of all of them and is again entertaining those that passed before him. Brenda and Ken’s favorite pets were their dog Riley and cat Missy.

Ken especially adored his twelve nieces and nephews and seven (about to be 8) great nieces and nephews. Ken was a very special uncle to all of them!

Ken, tragically lost his wife of more than 15 years Brenda (Stubby) McGuire only 9 months ago and was also preceded in death by his niece Kristen.  He is survived by his parents Charles and Barbara McGuire, Brothers Mark (Janelle) McGuire and Kevin (Phoelisa) McGuire; sisters Mary (Steve) Tyrrel and Kathy (Brent) Graham, Father-in-law Donovan Stubby and brother-in-law Bryan (Kristi) Stubby.

Recently in an e-mail conversation with Mary he gave direction for his visitation ceremony!  “OK, just prop me up beside the Juke Box and have a couple cold ones. A little bit of Clint Black and some George Strait music will be fine!”

Joyce A. Swindle, 73, died July 22, 2021.

She was born Feb. 2, 1948, at Colcord, Oklahoma the daughter of Bill and Lorene Lewellyn Bishop.  A longtime resident of Kingman, she was a retired employee of Klaver Construction.

On July 13, 1964, she married Charlie Swindle at Bentonville, Arkansas; he died Feb. 24, 2007.  Survivors include a son Mick and his wife Shannon; daughter Ruthie Kerr and her husband Kenny; brothers Gene, Donald and Earl Bishop; sisters Alice Oxford and Bonnie Estep; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She was also preceded in death by a brother Larry.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, at the Livingston Funeral Home, Kingman.  The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home.  Burial will be in the Hoosier Cemetery.

He was born Dec. 12, 1934, at Peabody, Kansas the son of Elmer and Tillie Albrecht Ewy.  A longtime resident of Derby, he retired as Vice-President of IFR Systems, Inc.

Virgil was a member of the Lorraine Ave. Mennonite Church; and the K&amp;O Engine Club.

On Sept. 13, 1960, he married Alana Graber at Kingman.  Other survivors include sons Joel, Jeremy and Lael; step-brother Richard Holladay; step-sister Virginia Graber; and 4 grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father Roscoe Holladay; and sister Kerren Krehbiel.

Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at the Kingman Mennonite Cemetery with the Rev. Christina Manero presiding. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Kingman Mennonite Church. The family requests that masks be worn during the memorial service.

Hayden Bret Cook, 27, of Hutchinson, passed away July 19, 2021, in his home.  He was born December 12, 1993, in Hutchinson, to Darran and Susan (Bird) Cook.

Hayden graduated from Buhler High School in 2012 and then attended Hutchinson Community College. He was a member of Church of the Holy Cross, in Hutchinson. Hayden played football for Buhler and continued to be involved with the program after high school by taking stats at the games. He loved sports and was passionate about his teams, including: the Chiefs, Jayhawks, Royals, Blue Dragons, and Buhler Crusaders. Hayden also enjoyed fishing, golfing, and his dog, Lucy.

Rodger Carson Kelso died July 21, 2021 in Houston, Texas.&nbsp; He was born May 13, 1949 in Lyons Kansas, the youngest son of Raymond and Jessie (Raulston) Kelso.&nbsp; Rodger was raised in Chase, Kansas and graduated from Chase High School and Hutchinson Junior College before relocating to Houston, Texas in 1972 to attend Mortuary College.&nbsp; He spent over 30 years in Funeral Service in the Houston area and after retirement, began a new career in Landscape Design until the time of his death.&nbsp; Rodger was a great lover of music. He collected record albums and books; was an avid wild mushroom hunter; grower of orchids, and loved to cook and enjoy fine wines.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers: James, Darrell, Millard, and Leon.&nbsp; He is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friend Frank H. Mahy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hettie Conrad died Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at her Schowalter Villa home, at the age of 92.&nbsp; She was born November 19, 1928, in Smithville, OH, the daughter of Sadie (Smith) and Jacob Conrad.&nbsp; She received a teaching certificate from Goshen (IN) College in 1949, then married Willard Conrad, a Goshen graduate from Wayland, IA, that August.&nbsp; The two of them moved to Hesston, KS, where Willard joined the Hesston College faculty.

For more than two decades, the two lived in the Hesston community, with Willard teaching and Hettie taking primary responsibility for raising their five children.&nbsp; In 1971, Willard made a career change. &nbsp;He spent the next 25 years in Mennonite pastorates in Indiana, Illinois, and Colorado.&nbsp; Hettie thrived in the role of pastor’s wife.&nbsp; She and Willard made many pastoral visits together over the years, and Hettie hosted many gatherings in their home.&nbsp; During Willard’s last pastoral assignment and for several years thereafter, the couple made their home in Colorado Springs.&nbsp; Hettie loved being near the mountains and made many dear friends during those years in Colorado.

In the year 2000, Willard and Hettie returned to Hesston after nearly 30 years of absence, to retire at Schowalter Villa.&nbsp; There, Hettie enjoyed various volunteer activities, foremost among them quilting.&nbsp; She spent many hours, as long as her health permitted, quilting in an alcove near the main entrance to the Villa, always with a friendly greeting to visitors and fellow residents as they came and went.&nbsp; Willard died at the Villa in 2013.

Hettie’s survivors include a brother, Carl Conrad, of Smithville, OH, and a sister, Annabelle Hughes, of Cleveland, OH.&nbsp; Her children are Cathy Conrad, of Albuquerque, NM; Daniel and wife Mary Ann, of Albuquerque, NM; Stephen and wife Sandy, of Goessel, KS; Sarah and husband Timothy Yoder, of Alamosa, CO; and Nancy and husband Ronald Schroeder, of Moundridge, KS.&nbsp; In addition, Hettie has 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.&nbsp; She was much loved and will be warmly remembered by all of them, as well as many friends she made over all the years of her life.

Iva Elnora Nusser, 106, died June 23, 2021, in Laguna Woods, CA.  She was born February 24, 1915, in Langdon, Kansas to Alpha and Jennie (Bonine) Cramer. 

Iva is preceded in death by her husband, two step sons, three brothers and one sister.

Iva reared her girls and worked as a sales clerk until she moved to California.  She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and gardening. She attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Kansas and Christian Mayflower Church in Laguna Woods, CA.

Iva is survived by: daughters, Janice Bruner of California and Sharon Bartz (Jerry) of Florida; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Vada Jewell Lieurance Call left her home in Eureka, Kansas on July 13, 2021 to reunite with her husband, Robert “Pat” Call, who had been awaiting her arrival since February 12, 2003. She is now dancing as much as her heart desires as they celebrate their belated 72nd&nbsp;wedding anniversary, which was July 4, and her 91st&nbsp;birthday, upcoming on August 5th.

Those who are thrilled she is dancing again, but saddened by her departure include daughter Terri Call of Eureka, daughter Linda Bock and husband Richard of Lebanon, Kansas, and granddaughter Amy Call of Wichita, Kansas. Additionally, she leaves behind seven nieces and nephews as well as many great nieces and nephews whose company and conversation she enjoyed as often as possible.

On a Saturday night, you might have found Vada camping at Fall River, listening to Pat play guitar at the V.F.W, or baking her signature breads and pies for a Sunday family gathering.&nbsp; After her retirement from Call Retail Liquor in Eureka, she also enjoyed making beaded Victorian lampshades, relaxing with her beloved Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Baby and watching NBA and college basketball, particularly her favorite KU Jayhawks.

Vada previously resided in Hutchinson and Burrton and worked at several different cafes and restaurants, including the Hutchinson Town Club. She also worked at R.L. Polk for many years and gained cherished friends from the hours spent in those workplaces. &nbsp;

She was preceded by her parents, Florence and Olda Lieurance, brothers Verle and Ervin Lieurance and many other treasured family members.

Per her final wishes, a private family service was held and she was laid to rest in the Greenwood Cemetery in Eureka. Memorials may be sent to the Kansas Humane Society or the charity of your choice in her honor.

Linda Marlene Chaney, 72, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly at 8:51 a.m., Wednesday, July 21st 2021 at her home.

Linda was born in St. Edward, Nebraska on June 21, 1949, a daughter of Nina Olga (Navarre) and Robert Leroy Striker, Sr.

Linda attended the Hastings grade school, Hastings, Nebraska, and graduated from Ewing High School, Ewing, Nebraska in 1967. She then attended Central Christian College of Kansas, McPherson, Kansas where she received her associates degree.

At the age of 12 Linda and her little sister, Donna age 7, became part of the Walter and Alice Miller family.

She was a member of First Christian Church McPherson, Kansas.

Linda Marlene Striker was united in marriage to Michael Ray Chaney on June 3, 1972 at the Free Methodist Church, McPherson, Kansas. The young couple established their first home together in McPherson. This union was blessed with the birth of two children, one son and one daughter, James and Carla.

Linda worked for Farmers Alliance as a secretary for four years. Linda was a homemaker and she took great pride in providing for her family in this manner. After the kids were in school she started working for U.S.D. 418 Food Service and she retired in 2012.

Linda volunteered at Save-N-Share. Linda enjoyed her home and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of over 49 years, Michael Chaney, of McPherson, Kansas; her children, James Chaney and wife Ramona, of Wichita, Kansas and Carla Unruh and husband Phil, of McPherson, Kansas; her siblings, Donna Arehart and husband Tom, of Orchard, Nebraska, Ann Davis and husband Gary, of San Bernardino, California, Robert Striker and wife Ruby, of College Station, Texas, Dan Miller and wife Jan, of Springfield, Nebraska, and Ruth Hawk and husband Mark, of Elk Horn Nebraska; her favorite grandson, Danial Chaney; other relatives and a host of friends.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents; her foster parents; and four brothers Edward Striker, Donald Striker, Michael Striker, and Charles Striker.

Gregg Nolan Schmidt, 60, passed away on July 14, 2021 at Diversicare of Hutchinson, Kansas.  He was born November 18, 1960 in Dodge City, Kansas, the son of Norman J. and Ruth A. Schmidt.

Gregg was a carpenter for over 30 years in the Hutchinson area.  He had multiple outdoor passions, such as fishing, biking, skiing, and golf.

Dominic graduated from Hutchinson High School in 2020. He worked as a collections clerk at Portfolio Recovery Associates and as a paralegal specialist in the Kansas Army National Guard. Dominic thoroughly enjoyed life. He attended Hutchinson Wesleyan Church.

Betty Ann Dukes Chambers, 89 passed away on July 20th, 2021 in Cunningham, Kansas.

She was born June, 11th 1932 in Delaware County near Jay Oklahoma in Yellow Bird Holler. Betty was born to John Blake Dukes and Blanche (Walker) Dukes.

Betty married Lowell Andrew Chambers in December of 1950 in St. John Kansas. They were married for 19 years. Betty and Lowell resided in Cairo, Kansas. And to this union were born 6 children.

Betty was a homemaker up until the time of her husband’s death in 1969. The family moved to Pratt, Kansas in 1969. Betty was initially employed at Ruth’s Café and worked at various restaurants as a waitress for an extended period of time.

Betty subsequently moved into the health care field and began working at Siesta Homes. She began acquiring education and certifications related to the health care profession. Betty received her LPN from Pratt Community College in 1988.

She transitioned from Siesta Homes and began working as a private health care nurse during the 1990’s. Betty provided private health care services for numerous individuals during this time period.

Eventually Betty went to work as an LPN at the Haviland Assisted Living Facility in 2005. Betty continued to work as a nurse until she finally retired at the age of 84.

Betty had a quick wit. Her happy place was any clear cold river in the Ozarks. She loved gardening. She dedicated her life to taking care of people and she will be dearly missed by all those who knew her.

She is survived by a daughter, Tracy Chambers (Larry Preisser), and sons, Casey Chambers, Mickey Chambers, and Dave Kip Chambers (Janet) and Ryan Chambers. There are 9 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl, her husband, Lowell, a son, Bryan, and 2 grandchildren, Corey and Joshua.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 22, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m., with family receiving friends from 6-8 at Larrison Mortuary, 300 Country Club Road, Pratt. Robert S. (Bob) Ensign peacefully passed away on July 19, 2021 in Wichita, Kansas.  

Bob was born in Findlay, Ohio to Sidney Benjamin Ensign and Orpha Mae (Newman) Ensign on September 17, 1928.  He has lived in Wichita, Kansas for the past 11 years, but still considers Concordia, Kansas to be his hometown.  He attended high school in Coffeyville, Kansas and graduated from Wichita University with a Master's Degree in music.  He met his wife, Jean Kiser, during this time at WU and they wed on May 28, 1949.  Bob then served in the Air Force and directed the United States Air Force Band in Europe.  He was stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany.  Upon his return to private life he taught music first in Peabody and then Marysville, Kansas before finding his home in Concordia where he spent most of his career. 

Bob enjoyed fishing and golfing, but most of all loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren.  He was a very giving man and spent many years caring for and serving others in various capacities because, as he said, "God put me in the position to do so for a reason".

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney B. and Orpha M. Ensign, his sister Rosemary Kern, and wife Jean Isabelle (Kiser) Ensign.  He is survived by his children David Ensign (Deborah) of Louisville,KY, Jane Laible (Les) of Topeka, and Steven Ensign (Gail) of Wichita; grandchildren Chelsea Reed (Nathan), Susanne Larson (Travis), Grace Remines (Adam), Anne Ensign Urteaga (Adam), Parker Ensign, Jacie Gunter (Justin), Linda Laible, Erin Laible, and Jennifer Laible.  He is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren; many other family and friends.

A graveside service will be held at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Concordia, Kansas at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 22, 2021.

She was born October 2, 1924 in Nashville, KS the daughter of William and Rosa Hageman Becker. A Kingman resident since 1979, moving from Willowdale, she was a homemaker and retired farmer. She loved to sew and make beautiful quilts for her family. She also loved to bake goodies. She always had cookies or cakes in the freezer for anyone that came to visit. She especially liked keeping monster cookies in the freezer when her grandkids came to visit. One of her biggest joys was family time with her kids, grandkids and great grandkids but also getting together with her siblings, that was always a blessing to witness. So many wonderful memories of the love and laughter that was shared with all of them.

She was a member of St Patrick Catholic Church, Kingman, KS

In 1947 she married Delbert Schwartz, who preceded her in death.&nbsp; Survivors include Sons Steve (Doris), Wayne (Debra), Craig, and daughter Carolyn Jantz (Kevin). Brothers: Walt Becker, Victor Becker, Gene Becker, and Don Becker. Sisters: Gladys Randolph, Irene Spade, Carolyn Dyche, and Pat Zrubek. She also was blessed with 10 Grandchildren and 16 Great Grandchildren.

Rhoda Louise Medlam, 92, passed away July 19, 2021, at McPherson Health and Rehab, McPherson.  She was born November 10, 1928, in Danville, KS, to Charles Floyd and Hazel Mina (Schwab) Crum.

Louise was a graduate of Harper County High School, Harper, KS.  She enjoyed playing cards and games, candlewicking, and needle punch.  Louise was a member of the ‘FAD of the Month Club’ that provided information to its members concerning various sewing and craft projects.

On August 18, 1950, she married Carl E. Medlam, in Hutchinson.  They shared over 43 years of marriage, prior to his death on February 3, 1994.

Louise is survived by:  children, Danny (Roxane) Medlam of Burrton, Carla Rae Medlam of Hutchinson, and Annette (Butch) Badgett of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Carl (Heidi) Badgett of Nixa, MO, Brandon (Emily) Badgett of Hutchinson, Nathanael (Amy) Medlam, Bethany, OK, and Ethan Medlam of Lawrence, KS; great-grandchildren, Gavin, MacKenzie, and Cameron Badgett, and Aiden and Malachi Medlam; and siblings, Wilma Hallda of Burrton, and Ralph Crum of Texas.

Rhoda Louise Medlam, 92, passed away July 19, 2021, at McPherson Health and Rehab, McPherson. She was born November 10, 1928, in Danville, KS, to Charles Floyd and Hazel Mina (Schwab) Crum.Louise was a graduate of Harper County High School, Harper, KS. She enjoyed playing cards and games, candlewicking, and needle punch. Louise was a member of the ‘FAD of the Month Club’ that provided information to its members concerning various sewing and craft projects.On August 18, 1950, she married Carl E. Medlam, in Hutchinson. They shared over 43 years of marriage, prior to his death on February 3, 1994.Louise is survived by: children, Danny (Roxane) Medlam of Burrton, Carla Rae Medlam of Hutchinson, and Annette (Butch) Badgett of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Carl (Heidi) Badgett of Nixa, MO, Brandon (Emily) Badgett of Hutchinson, Nathanael (Amy) Medlam, Bethany, OK, and Ethan Medlam of Lawrence, KS; great-grandchildren, Gavin, MacKenzie, and Cameron Badgett, and Aiden and Malachi Medlam; and siblings, Wilma Hallda of Burrton, and Ralph Crum of Texas.She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; and seven siblings.Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, July 22, 2021, at Fairlawn Burial Park, 2401 Carey Blvd., Hutchinson, with Pastor Bob Phipps officiating.
