Dennis James Larkin, 57 , of Medicine Lodge, died Saturday, August 7, 2021 at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital, Medicine Lodge, KS. He was born on February 8, 1964, the son of the late Frances Ernestine (Kahmeyer) Larkin and Kenneth F. Larkin of Medicine Lodge, KS. On August 15, 1987 he married, Debra (Yager) Larkin in Lincoln. She survives. They would have been celebrating 34 years of marriage. Surviving in addition to his wife, Debra Larkin of Medicine Lodge, are his father, Kenneth Larkin of Medicine Lodge, KS; three children, Andrew (Kristine Landwehr) Larkin, Kayla (Mark Coley) Larkin, and Breanna (Dakota Lonker) Larkin, all of Medicine Lodge; three grandchildren, Jemma Jolene Whitebread, Lainey Coley, and Jocelyn Jones; one brother, Jason (Tricia) Larkin of Medicine Lodge; one sister, Cynthia (Kevin) Regier of Great Bend; one sister-in-law, Pamela (Todd) Schimke of De Soto; seven nieces and nephews, Zachary and Avery Larkin, Jacob and Emilie Regier, and Cora, Connor, and Colton Schimke. Dennis was a contract oil pumper, following in his dad, grandpa, and uncle's footsteps. Dennis was an avid Oklahoma State Cowboys Fan. He and his family would travel to Stillwater and take in both football and basketball games. He was elated when Bre decided to attend OSU. He even drove an orange Tundra pickup for several years. Dennis was known for his friendly personality and lots of people enjoyed his teasing and wise-cracking demeanor. Over the years as his children played school and summer sports he was the team's biggest fan and cheerleader; and was just beginning to follow his granddaughter, Jemma in her athletic adventures. Dennis had recently taken up gardening. He loved being able to eat and share with others what he was able to grow. Fishing was an activity he also enjoyed with his family and friends. If you knew Dennis you knew he had a love for animals, especially dogs. He saved several animals over the years from their untimely deaths. His Cocker, Molly, rode with him for 15 years until the family had to put her to sleep this past winter and he was really heartbroken. Of all his activities and pastimes, his most cherished were Sunday night dinners surrounded by his entire family. Dennis loved spending time with his family. Even though he may have told people they were his biggest pain they were really the biggest joy of his life. Visitation will be on Friday, August 13, 2021 at Larrison Funeral Home, 120 E. admission attendant and secretary for Ellinwood District Hospital.&nbsp; She 
was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and served as the secretary 
treasurer for Cheyenne Bottoms Sportsmen Club.&nbsp; Donna enjoyed arts and 
crafts, fishing and swimming.

Survivors include husband, Curtis Klusener, of the home; one son: 
Curtis Klusener, Jr. of Great Bend; two brothers, Terry Arnold of 
Weatherford, Texas; Patrick Schreck of Wichita, and step-father Maurice

Leona Mae Lehrman, 92, passed into the loving arms of her Savior in the wee hours of August 7, 2021, at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.

Leona was born in rural Marion County, Kansas, on December 28, 1928, the daughter of Jonas and Clara (Hein) Mohn.&nbsp;&nbsp; She met Walter Lehrman in 1946, and they were married on October 10, 1948 at First Christian Church in Marion, and moved to Newton.&nbsp; Walter preceded her in death in July of 1998.

Leona had a strong faith in the Lord as her Savior and was a member of Newton Bible Church for more than 60 years.&nbsp; She was a faithful servant there and attended faithfully as weather and her health allowed.

Leona became an Avon Representative in the late 1960’s, which really suited her outgoing and friendly personality.&nbsp; Her frankness about the struggles caring for twin handicapped sons, her unwavering faith in her Savior, and her outgoing personality, helped her attain President’s Club status for top sales the last 15 years or so of her “career”, having earned many awards.&nbsp; She enjoyed getting to know the preferences of her clients and was a great encouragement to all of them.

In her later years, she enjoyed playing her piano, socializing with her friends at Hickory Homes, at church, and at TOPS/KOPS, of which she was a long-time member.&nbsp; She also loved playing dominoes at Hickory Homes, of which she was very proficient!&nbsp; She also loved flying out to California to visit her daughter, Pam, and granddaughter, Wendy.

Leona is survived by her daughter, Pamela (Dennis) Schrag of California, two grandsons, Bryan, of Texas, and Robert Michael Lehrman, of Newton, daughter-in-law Terry Lehrman, a granddaughter Wendy (Jason) Hart of California, one great-grandson, Noah, of California, one brother-in-law Otto (Phyllis) Lehrman, and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lehrman; parents, Jonas and Clara Mohn; brothers, Irvin and Ernest; sister, Barbara; sons Robert Wade Lehrman, Mark Ray Lehrman, Clark Jay Lehrman; and baby daughter Wendy Sue Lehrman.

Visitation will be from 6pm-8pm, Wednesday, August 18th, at Petersen Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 10am on Thursday, August 19th, at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton with a memorial service will take place later in the day at 3pm at Newton Bible Church.

She was born March 20, 1932, at Elk City, Oklahoma the daughter of W.E. “Pete” and Bess Nicholson Thompson.&nbsp; A Kingman resident since 1956, she was a retired book keeper for the First National Bank.

Peggy was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Martha Circle, both of Kingman.

On Jan. 2, 1954, she married James A. Roberts at Putnam City, Oklahoma.&nbsp; Other survivors include sons Kenneth and Terry; brother Don Thompson; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by a son James Roberts, Jr.; and sister Wanda Thiery and Lylianne Smith.

She was a Registered Nurse and worked for the McPherson Hospital and in the offices of Dr. C.C. Cunnick and Dr. William Collier. Vicki was born on January 27, 1948, in Beloit, KS, the daughter of William “Bill” H. and Colleen J. (Coover) Hollaway. On June 8, 1969, Vicki was united in marriage to Bradley K. Giddings. This union was blessed with three children, Derric, Brandon, and Kamie. Brad preceded Vicki in death on February 29, 2016. Survivors include: two sons, Derric Giddings of Lebanon, OR and Brandon Giddings (Cari) of McPherson; a daughter, Kamie Ward (Brad) of McPherson; two siblings, Van Hollaway (Christie) of Nashville, TN and Frank Hollaway (Brenda) of Beloit; and eight grandchildren, Sierra &amp; Alex Giddings, Caleb, Halle, &amp; Holli Giddings, and Macyn, Ryker, &amp; Colby Ward. Vicky Schroeder, 71, passed away August 5, 2021, at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born in Newton, Kansas at Axtell Hospital on April 8, 1950, the daughter of Ross and Leota (Gentry) Ames. She attended and graduated from Peabody High School in Peabody, Kansas.

Vicky grew up in Walton, Kansas, where she spent lots of time in her families store, Ames Merchantile, started by her grandpa and uncle. Vicky would spend her entire life in the town of Walton and enjoyed serving the community in many ways. She especially enjoyed organizing and serving on the board of the Walton Rural Life Festival for 10 years.

On the Friday after Thanksgiving 1989, Vicky was united in marriage to Everett Schroeder in Newton, Kansas. They celebrated their 31st anniversary last year.

Vicky enjoyed cooking, sewing and creating many beautiful quilts, painting, travel, and getting her hands in the dirt, designing her lovely flower gardens. She definitely had a green thumb!

Vicky had a kind, loving, and generous personality. She was soft-spoken, but could cracks jokes even during her hardest days.

Her family will fondly remember her baking them cakes on their birthdays and for friends weddings, the warm and wonderful family holiday dinners, and her superb burrito making skills.

Vicky is survived by her husband, Everett Schroeder; son, Brian (Gale) Verschelden; Step-children, Amy (Brandon) Jameson and Chad (Laurie) Schroeder; grandchildren, Callyn, Dylan, Emma and Cohen Jameson, and Connor Haley, Luke, and McKinsey Schroeder; and sibling, Darrel (Pam) Ames.

Visitation is from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm, Monday, August, 9th, 2021 at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. Funeral service will be at 10:00 am, Tuesday, August 10th, 2021, also at the funeral home presided over by Pastor Amos McCarthy. A graveside ceremony will follow the service in Walton, Kansas.

Jonas L. Miller, 83, of Hutchinson, KS, died at 7:45 am on Monday, August 9, at Freeman Bontrager residence, Millersburg, IN. 

He had become ill while visiting this area. He was born on August 3, 1938 in Atlantic, PA, to Levi M. and Mattie E. (Byler) Miller. On September 26, 1958 in Greenville, PA he married Ruth Kauffman, she died January 17, 2011. 

Surviving are son, Melvin (Elizabeth) Miller of Hutchinson, KS; daughter, Erma Marsh of Stephenville, TX; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; half-brother, Joe (Elva) Miller of Middlefield, OH; two half-sisters, Sadie Miller of Lewisburg, KY, Clara Miller of Middlefield, OH; two stepsisters, Fannie (William) Miller of Chaseburg, WI, Bill (Lizzie) Miller of Hazen, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and infant daughter, Esther Miller; two stillborn children; two brothers, Enos and Dan Miller; sister, Amelia Mullet; half-sister, Mary Ann Fry and stepmother Rosa Miller. Jonas had been a farmer, worked in factories and most recently as a carpenter before retiring. He is a member of the Old Order Amish Church. 

Visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, August 10, at Marion and Ruby Nisley residence, 62413 State Rd. 13 Goshen; then from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 pm, Thursday, August 12, at Melvin Miller residence, 2408 East Ranger Rd., Hutchinson, KS. Funeral services will be at 9:00 am on Friday, August 13, also at the Melvin Miller residence in Hutchinson, KS. Services will be conducted by Bishop Floyd Schrock and the home ministers. Burial will be in Yoder Cemetery, Yoder, KS. Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, Middlebury and Ott Funeral Home in Haven, KS are in charge of arrangements.

Jonas L. Miller, 83, of Hutchinson, KS, died at 7:45 am on Monday, August 9, at Freeman Bontrager residence, Millersburg, IN. He had become ill while visiting this area. He was born on August 3, 1938 in Atlantic, PA, to Levi M. and Mattie E. (Byler) Miller. On September 26, 1958 in Greenville, PA he married Ruth Kauffman, she died January 17, 2011. Surviving are son, Melvin (Elizabeth) Miller of Hutchinson, KS; daughter, Erma Marsh of Stephenville, TX; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; half-brother, Joe (Elva) Miller of Middlefield, OH; two half-sisters, Sadie Miller of Lewisburg, KY, Clara Miller of Middlefield, OH; two stepsisters, Fannie (William) Miller of Chaseburg, WI, Bill (Lizzie) Miller of Hazen, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and infant daughter, Esther Miller; two stillborn children; two brothers, Enos and Dan Miller; sister, Amelia Mullet; half-sister, Mary Ann Fry and stepmother Rosa Miller. Jonas had been a farmer, worked in factories and most recently as a carpenter before retiring. He is a member of the Old Order Amish Church. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, August 10, at Marion and Ruby Nisley residence, 62413 State Rd. 13 Goshen; then from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 pm, Thursday, August 12, at Melvin Miller residence, 2408 East Ranger Rd., Hutchinson, KS. Funeral services will be at 9:00 am on Friday, August 13, also at the Melvin Miller residence in Hutchinson, KS. Services will be conducted by Bishop Floyd Schrock and the home ministers. Max Eugene Kabler&nbsp;age 92 passed away on Saturday, July 31, 2021.&nbsp; He was born in Wichita, Kansas to Roy Ivan Kabler and Cora Letta (Wright) Kabler on October 26, 1928.&nbsp; He was a life long resident of Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp; He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on April 20, 1946 and served his country for two years on the USS General William Mitchell in the Pacific theater.&nbsp; In 1949 he married Ruth Griffith and they celebrated 71 years of marriage.&nbsp; He worked for Santa Fe Railroad as a Switchman, Brakeman, and Conductor until retirement in 1987.&nbsp; He attended Church and was active at Prairie Homestead Chapel in his later years.&nbsp; He enjoyed boating, camping and trout fishing with friends and family.&nbsp; He could frequently be found in his garage creating, modifying and reinventing all sorts of projects.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his six siblings and one child, Alan Dean.&nbsp; Max is survived by his spouse, his two children, Eugenia Spady, Hays, Kansas and Marcus (Becky) Kabler, Wichita, Kansas and six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Christopher Mark Bullock, 57, passed away on Tuesday, August 3, 2021.  He was born in Odessa, Texas on June 18, 1964.  Chris attended school in Derby and Phillipsburg, Kansas. After the untimely death of his father, Chris developed a lifetime friendship with Rolf Halstensen through the Big Brother program, he was also became very close to his uncle, Ken Bullock.

Chris never knew a stranger and always had a joke to tell.  Before he became disabled he enjoyed traveling. He had a keen interest in geography and love of animals.

Chris was preceded in death by his father, Richard Bullock.

Chris is survived by his mother Mary and stepfather Loyal Smith of Newton, KS; daughter Krista (Michael) Shea of Mankato, KS; uncle Kenneth Bullock of Independence, MO; brothers Kelvin Bullock of Hays, KS and Jim (Lisa) Cude of Fall River, KS; sisters Karen (Mike) Runnion of Glade, KS and Kathy (Jamie) Whisenhunt of Seligman, MO; grandchildren Vincent &amp; Mika Joyce of Mankato, KS; 5 nephews and nieces, 7 great nephews and nieces.

Service will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 21, at Olliff-Boeve Chapel in Phillipsburg, Kansas. He will be laid to rest at Marvin Cemetery, Glade, Kansas.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Purple Paws Animal Welfare Society.

Patrick Boone “Pat” Staton, 64, of Sterling, Kansas, passed away August 6, 2021, at Hospice House of Hutchinson. 

He was born September 29, 1956, in Coffeyville, Kansas, the son of Jack E. and Joan Defenbaugh Staton. Pat graduated from Nickerson High School, with the class of 1975. He has resided in Sterling since 1985, formerly of Hutchinson. Pat worked for Consolidated Manufacturing in Hutchinson for 27 years tearing down engines and later becoming the leadman in the parts room. He also worked for Camp Wa-Ja-To as a grounds keeper. Pat was a member of the First Christian Church, Lyons, where he served as a past elder, deacon, financial secretary, and soundman. Pat enjoyed playing the drums, doing body work on cars, collecting cars, loved going fishing and enjoyed watching NASCAR and Western movies. On October 27, 1979, Pat was united in marriage with Debra M. “Debbie” Patterson in South Hutchinson. She survives of the home. 

Pat is also survived by his daughter, Susie Brogan and husband Shiloh of Colby, KS; three grandchildren, Kiley, Lacey, and Dylan Brogan of Colby, KS; aunt, Betty Lindbloom of Denver, CO; cousins, Brenda Smith and husband Dean of Hutchinson, and Connie Welton and husband Jay of Denver, CO; and his beloved dog, Rico. He is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Michael Staton.

Patrick Boone "Pat" Staton |1956-2021|

Dr. Ronald F. Stevens, son of Fred and Geneva Stevens, was born on January 13, 1949, in Wichita. He passed away peacefully on Friday, August 6, 2021, at Kidron Bethel, at the age of 72, surrounded by his loving family. As a devoted husband, father and grandfather Ron will be missed by many.

Ron attended Westminster College and graduated from Kansas State University before attending medical school in Guadalajara, Mexico. He then returned and did his residency at K.U. School of Medicine. He then met and married the love of his life, Pamela L. Stevens on October 24, 1982, in Wichita. He then dedicated his career to serving others as a family physician. He worked at Bethel Clinic, was a partner at Wichita Clinic; and finally retired from Via Christi/Ascension in 2016. He enjoyed getting to know and caring for his patients and their families, who in return enriched his life.

When he wasn’t working as a doctor one of Ronnie’s favorite things to do was to get away and spend time in Avon, Colorado. Over the years he took joy in hiking, biking and downhill skiing. This love of being in the mountains is being continued on the same trails by his children and grandchildren. In the last few years, you could often find him sitting in the front yard on his glider soaking in the sunshine and friendly conversations. Ron enjoyed many things such as attending Kansas State football games, going on long motorcycle rides, cruising in his classic 52’ MG TD, evening phone calls with friends, eating his tiptop from Nuway or burgers from Ty’s Diner, wearing bow ties to the office and always having crushed ice chips and a Diet Pepsi nearby. His greatest joy of all was taking his wife, children and, most importantly, his grandchildren to Disney after his retirement. With the help of his Dream Team of Doctors, Dr. Bassam Mattar, Dr. Wassim H. Shaheen and Dr. Jason Taylor, Ron was able to spend more time with those he loved most.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Geneva Stevens. He will live on in the memories of his wife, Pam, son and daughter-in-law Tyler and Ericia Stevens, daughter Lauren Stevens, Grandchildren Landyn, Oliver and Savannah Stevens; Sisters and brothers-in-laws Jan and Jim Mattingly, Stephanie and Dr. Jay Stanley Jones, and many loved cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. His memory will also live in the many patients he served and met throughout his career. A special thank you to all who helped care for Ronnie in his final days.

&nbsp; Herbert Laverne Johnson was born July 11, 1936 in Princeville, Illinois the first of two sons of Harold Elgin Johnson and Lorene Francis Kramer Johnson. After leaving the farm near Princeville, Illinois, his family moved to Canton, Illinois, Illiopolis, Illinois, Richmond, California, Beatrice, Nebraska, Lincoln, Nebraska, South English, Iowa, McPherson, Kansas, Garden City, Kansas, Adel, Iowa, York Center, Illinois, Wyers Cave, Virginia, Mt. Morris, Illinois, Thayer, Nebraska, Elk Horn, Iowa, McPherson, Moscow, Liberal, Kansas, and Blue Eye, Missouri. His high school years were spent at Beatrice, Nebraska, Lincoln, Nebraska, Kinross High School near South English, Iowa, McPherson, Kansas and he graduated from Adel, Iowa. In 1954 he entered McPherson College as an industrial arts major but after taking several courses with Dr. Raymond Flory history/government became his major and his first professional love with industrial arts a close second. While at McPherson College he met Helen Joan Ford and they were married on August 25, 1957. They had three children Helen Rachel, Harold Lane and Hope Elizabeth. After graduating in 1958 Herb’s first job teaching at Thayer High School in Thayer, Nebraska where he organized an Industrial Arts Department. After two years at Thayer he went to Elk Horn High School in Elk Horn, Iowa where he organized a district wide Library/Media program and a High School Industrial Arts program. In 1970 Herb earned his Master's degree at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and was called to McPherson College to organize an Educational Media program for the college in Miller Library. While at the college he also started an Audio Visual Communications Department/program. In 1988 he went to Moscow High School in Moscow, Kansas where he was instrumental in the organization of a District Library/Media and Computer Program. Herb loved education and small schools. He also loved to organize new programs for those students. Some of those programs were “before their time” but they always seemed to be well received by his students. In 1998 he was granted early retirement by the Moscow school district. Then he and Joan moved to Blue Eye, Missouri near Branson. Herb had many interests hunting, fishing, collecting, travel in the United States, and architectural design. He was a student of several Native American tribes including the Mississippian Mound Builders, the American Civil War, the Trans-Mississippi West and World War II. After Joan’s passing in 1999 he spent much time fishing, reading and the pursuit of family history and genealogy. In 2010 he returned to McPherson. &nbsp; Herbert Laverne Johnson was born July 11, 1936 in Princeville, Illinois the first of two sons of Harold Elgin Johnson and Lorene Francis Kramer Johnson. After leaving the farm near Princeville, Illinois, his family moved to Canton, Illinois, Illiopolis, Illinois, Richmond, California, Beatrice, Nebraska, Lincoln, Nebraska, South English, Iowa, McPherson, Kansas, Garden City, Kansas, Adel, Iowa, York Center, Illinois, Wyers Cave, Virginia, Mt. Morris, Illinois, Thayer, Nebraska, Elk Horn, Iowa, McPherson, Moscow, Liberal, Kansas, and Blue Eye, Missouri. His high school years were spent at Beatrice, Nebraska, Lincoln, Nebraska, Kinross High School near South English, Iowa, McPherson, Kansas and he graduated from Adel, Iowa. In 1954 he entered McPherson College as an industrial arts major but after taking several courses with Dr. Raymond Flory history/government became his major and his first professional love with industrial arts a close second. While at McPherson College he met Helen Joan Ford and they were married on August 25, 1957. They had three children Helen Rachel, Harold Lane and Hope Elizabeth. After graduating in 1958 Herb’s first job teaching at Thayer High School in Thayer, Nebraska where he organized an Industrial Arts Department. After two years at Thayer he went to Elk Horn High School in Elk Horn, Iowa where he organized a district wide Library/Media program and a High School Industrial Arts program. In 1970 Herb earned his Master's degree at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and was called to McPherson College to organize an Educational Media program for the college in Miller Library. While at the college he also started an Audio Visual Communications Department/program. In 1988 he went to Moscow High School in Moscow, Kansas where he was instrumental in the organization of a District Library/Media and Computer Program. Herb loved education and small schools. He also loved to organize new programs for those students. Some of those programs were “before their time” but they always seemed to be well received by his students. In 1998 he was granted early retirement by the Moscow school district. Then he and Joan moved to Blue Eye, Missouri near Branson. Verlla Coughenour, age 91 and a longtime resident of Manhattan, died Saturday, August 7, 2021 at Bethany Village in Lindsborg.

Verlla was born on February 11, 1930 in Beaver, Oklahoma to Melvin and Pearl (Wiltfong) Hummer.  Raised on a farm in the Oklahoma/Texas Panhandle she graduated from Perryton High School in 1948.  

She attended McPherson College where she met Dean Coughenour.  They were married on August 24, 1951, and moved directly to Oberlin, Ks where Dean taught in the High School.  In 1958 they moved to Manhattan, Kansas where they owned AgPress, a publishing and printing company.  

Verlla was an active member of PEO and the First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan for over 50 years.   She was an avid tennis player, played in several bridge clubs and enjoyed traveling.

She is survived by her three children, Tim Coughenour of Lawrence, Susan Coughenour Lundstrom (Greg) of Lindsborg and Evan Coughenour (Diane) of Manhattan; two grandchildren Eric Lundstrom (Erin) and Bebe Coughenour Juen (John); six great grandchildren Carter, Beckett, Harper, Isis, Tala and Kai; nine nieces and nephews and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dean Coughenour, parents Melvin and Pearl Hummer, brother Lloyd Hummer and infant sister Genevieve. 

Memorial Services will be held Saturday, August 14, at 2:00pm at the First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan.  A private family inurnment will precede the service.

Sadie Decker of Peabody, Kansas, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and friend to many passed away peacefully on July 31, 2021. 

Sadie was born July 17, 1917 on her family’s farm six miles south of Galva, Kansas. She was the third youngest of eight children born to Isaac and Carrie Jantz. Sadie grew up on the family farm and attended school completing her sophomore year of High School.  In her late teens she performed housekeeping for several families in the McPherson area. She met and started dating her future husband, La Verne Decker of Moundridge, at her 21st birthday party organized by her younger sister, Elda. They were married on May 24, 1939 at the Emmanuel Mennonite church with a reception at the Jantz family farm. The newlywed couple moved immediately to their farm outside Peabody, Kansas where the first order of business was to get the spring crops planted. They established their farm in Peabody and became firmly established in the community during the 1940’s. One of the major events during this time was getting electricity to the farm in February 1941; she always said that was a special day. During World War II, Sadie was active in the USO in Newton Kansas, providing meals for soldiers traveling across the country by rail.

Sadie was a homemaker, raising two boys, while helping with many farming chores that needed to be done. She was an exceptional seamstress, making her own clothes; Afghans and quilts for her two sons and their families. Another area where Sadie excelled was her cooking; she spoiled her family with excellent meals using fresh farm produce. Her cinnamon rolls, fresh pies and cakes were always a hit with the family. Sadie kept active in many social and educational groups; Belleview study group, Kansas State University Home Extension Units, Stitch and Chatter club, and Sorosis club.

Sadie and La Verne stopped farming in 1986, and were able to travel; trips to Alaska and Hawaii were her favorites. Her husband La Verne passed away in November 1999; Sadie continued to live on the farm until December 2000, when she moved into Peabody. She lived in Peabody for another 19 years, keeping active in the Methodist Church, Senior Center and managing the family farm. She moved to El Dorado in November 2019 where she remained until her passing. A life well lived, her legacy will be carried warmly in our hearts

Sadie was preceded in death by her husband La Verne and her eight siblings. She is survived by her son Rodger and wife Sharon of El Dorado, Kansas;  Darrel and wife Helen of Westminster, Colorado;  grandchildren Danielle, Carissa (Chris), Alan(Jonette), Karla(Craig) Laura (Adrian); great grandchildren Cole, Jacob, Kaelyn, Brody, Dylan, Rylan, Lyanna, Samantha, Austin and Avery.

Fred Vague was a hero to his sons.  His life was simple but complex.  Life was difficult but he made the most of every opportunity.  From his birth in Castleton, Kansas, to his death in Wichita he did not physically stray from his roots.  However, that did not stop his active mind from going to far places and exploring complex things with his mind.  This was a result of the cruel act of blindness. 

Fred Robert Vague was born on July 31, 1925, to Frederick and Viola Mae (Dague) Vague.  He died on August 1, 2021 at the age of 96. He was a loving husband to Cristel Erlee (Higgins) Vague and the Father of Rex R. Vague and Ron A. Vague.  He had two siblings, Helen Ann McClellan and Melvin Vague.  “Fred R” or “Zeke” as many called him, had a long and fruitful life.  He grew up in the town of Hutchinson, Kansas, graduating from Hutchinson High School in 1943.  He joined the Navy on September 15, 1943 during World War II.  He advanced to the rank of Motor Machinist Mate 2c. And was honorably discharged from the Navy on May 19, 1946.  He attended Hutchinson Junior College from 1946 to 1948.  He married Cristel Erlee Higgins on July 30, 1948.  He attended Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas and after graduation with a law degree in 1951 moved to Wichita, Kansas to live.  Fred was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa and subsequently progressed to total blindness.  He worked for the Travelers Insurance Company in Wichita for 25 years as a claims attorney, and was the Supervising Adjustor of the Claims Department. 

Fred will be remembered as an active man that nothing seemed to bother much.  Considering his condition and the hardships it placed on him, that outlook on life was exceptional.  His active mind and inquisitiveness about all things served him well throughout the years.  He bowled on the Blind Bowlers League in Wichita for many years. He was a ham radio operator, wood worker and loved all things mechanical.  He was the builder, mechanic and pit crew for his sons 10 year Go Kart racing hobby.  He had a love and passion for automobiles and books, and although finances were tight managed to obtain several cars that are considered classic by today’s standards, as well as an extensive library. He read every day, first reading Braille, then listening to Talking Books furnished by the Kansas State Library, and went through a prodigious number of them over the years.  He was an avid Shocker fan, and enjoyed listening to WSU games whenever he could.  He also enjoyed attending the Drum and Bugle Corps competitions when they came to the Wichita area.   He and Erlee resided in the north Wichita area in the house of their dreams for 43 years.  Fred was an amazing man who accomplished many things even with his visual disability. Family and friends remember Fred as being sweet, tenderhearted and smart.  He leaves a legacy of love and integrity.  He will be greatly missed.

Ralph Kier Crockett, 91, a long-time resident of Lyons, Kansas, passed away August 7, 2021 in Denver, CO after a long illness. 

Ralph was born February 19, 1930, on a farm near Gentry, MO. He was the fifth of eight children born to Oliver Monroe and Stella Beatrice (Kier) Crockett. He attended grade school at the Shockley school near the farm and is a graduate of Albany High School where he played football. After graduating, he worked in St. Joe and attended Maryville College for a short time. He was drafted into the US Army and served two and a half years, which included time overseas in the Korean War. He was awarded a Commendation Medal for meritorious service. On September 5, 1952, he married Marsha M. Murray. They moved to Lyons, Kansas in 1954, where Ralph worked as a mechanic for Bay Petroleum in Chase, KS. They were lifelong members of the First Christian Church in Lyons. Ralph worked for many years at what is now the Kinder Morgan compressor station near Alden. His work took him around Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Iowa, and the Gulf Coast. Always a dedicated family man, Ralph’s interests included hunting, football, car and engine maintenance, and farming. He had many vacations with family in Kansas City, the Ozarks, Nebraska, and California. He and Marsha were drawn back to Albany, MO for many occasions and enjoyed class reunions and lifelong friendships there. 

Ralph is survived by his daughter, Gayle Crockett of Denver; brother, Olen Crockett of Denver; and sister, Nadyne Parman and husband Don of West Lafayette, Indiana. Ralph was preceded in death by his beloved wife Marsha in 2014; his parents; and siblings, Eldon, Velma, Ruth, Robert, and Arlene. 

Funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, August 21, 2021, at the First Christian Church, Lyons with Pastor Thom Scott officiating. She was the daughter of Raymond James and Minnie Augusta (Krause) DeBus. Dian was a 1950 graduate of Herington High School and was a majorette in the band. She was united in marriage to Paul William Hegle on June 16, 1951, in Freemont, NE. Dian worked as a store clerk most of her working career. She was a window dresser and store clerk for JC Penney and Dreiling’s Store. Dian enjoyed flower gardening, baking for her family, loved to fish, loved to take walks and socializing with her friends. 

Her greatest joy was her family including her children Cindy (Gary) Floyd of Herington, Kimberly (Scott) Erickson of Salina, and Tracy (Robert) Gilbert of Groveland, FL; grandchildren GP (Amber) Floyd, Danny Floyd, Nicholyn Strome, Clansey (Emily) Strome, Sarah (Aaron) Wendt, Madeleine Gilbert and Mason Gilbert; great grandchildren Amanda, Tana, Brantley, Wesley, Matthew and Liam, Cleveland, Ivy, Barrett; and great great grandchild Sadie. 

Dian passed away on August 5, 2021, at Herington Hospital. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Paul, and siblings Jimmy, Johnny, Woodie, and Kenney DeBus, Lee Rose Valentine, Ella Mae Taylor and Betty Nely. Her family will gather with friends on Monday August 9th from 5-7 p.m. at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home.

Wayne’s life began on October 4, 1951, the son of Virgil and Mary (Barron) Wisdom in Bonne Terre, Missouri. Virgil "Wayne" Dewayne Wisdom |1951-2021|

Gerald’s life began on February 25, 1953, in Herington. He was the son of Charles and Alice Mae (Diepenbrock) Dittman. He was a 1971 graduate of Hope High School. Gerald was united in marriage to Diana Evans on December 7, 1974, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lyons Creek. At the time of his death, Gerald was a school bus driver for Hope Schools. Gerald enjoyed riding his motorcycle and making wine and home brewing beer. He was a great cook and computer hobbyist, as well as doing some woodworking. Gerald was a member of the American Legion Post 12 and at the time of his death was the current commander.

His loving family includes his wife Diana of Hope, children Erin (Keith) Day of Krum, TX and Megan (Greg) McPherson of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren Tobin and Caitlin Day; siblings Sharon (CJ) Cross of Salina, Duane (Brenda) Dittman of Lincolnville, Janice (John) Fenske of Valley Center and Charlotte (Jim) Schultz of Hope and many nieces and nephews.

Thelma Pauline Hutchinson, 84, of Great Bend, Kansas, and former 
Russell and Paradise, Kansas, resident, died on Friday, August 06, 2021,
 at the Azria Health Care Center in Great Bend, Kansas.

Thelma was born on December 26, 1936, in Wichita, Kansas, the 
daughter of Lester R. and Helen Maude (Dodson) Pfortmiller.&nbsp; She was 
raised by her grandparents Henry and Anna Pfortmiller and grew up and 
attended school in rural Paradise, Kansas, and lived in the Russell, 
Osborne and Barton County, Kansas areas most all her life. &nbsp;She was 
married to Tom Hutchinson on January 25, 1954 in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; From 
this union Thelma and Tom were blessed with 3 children Sheryl, Randy and
 Bruce.&nbsp; She was a hard-working wife and mother who enjoyed taking care 
of her husband and children. &nbsp;She worked as a certified nurse’s 
assistant and physical therapy aid at the Russell Regional Hospital from
 1980 to 1995.&nbsp; She was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in
 Russell and Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp; She was 
also a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, KOOD, ROAR and Palco Art 
Club.&nbsp; She enjoyed being a talented artist creating beautiful oil and 
water color paintings and wood carvings.&nbsp; She enjoyed listening to music
 and watching football on television.&nbsp; Most of all she enjoyed spending 
time with her family and close friends.

Surviving family include her daughter Sheryl Corn and husband Steve 
of Great Bend, Kansas, sons Randy Hutchinson and wife Stephanie of 
Falun, Kansas and Bruce Hutchinson of Hoisington, Kansas; sisters Sue 
Koehler and husband Dan of Lawrence, Kansas and Loa Gordon of Auburn, 
Kansas; 9 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and one great-great 
grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents Lester Pfortmiller and Helen
 Burger and grandparents Henry and Anna Pfortmiller; sister Alice Wiggs 
and one great grandchild Fayelle Hutchinson. A celebration of Thelma’s 
life will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, August 13, 2021, at the 
Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; Visitation will be 
from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Thursday, August 12, 2021, at the mortuary with
 family greeting guests from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M Thursday evening.&nbsp; 
Memorials may be given to the Palco Art Club and sent in care of the

Sonya Kay Chambers, 79, died August 3, 2021, at The Arbors at Waldron Place, in Hutchinson. She was born September 8, 1941, in Los Angeles, CA, to Hershel and Dorothy (Oeser) Gum.

Sonya graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1961. She worked as a secretary and in sales before joining her sister, Carolyn, in her cleaning business, “A Woman’s Touch”. Sonya also worked as a private duty caregiver. She was an avid walker, enjoyed playing tennis, and loved cats. Sonya was a member of First Christian Church.

She is survived by: sons, Adam Chambers of Topeka, Shaun Chambers of Meriden; granddaughters, Crystal Puglisi (Nicholas) of Lawrence, Caitlin Chambers of Topeka, Kyra Chambers of Tooele, Utah; sister, Carolyn Bennett of Hutchinson; half-sister, Sheila Miller of Sterling; and numerous extended family members.

Sonya was preceded in death by her parents.

Cremation has taken place. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, August 14, 2021, at Fairlawn Burial Park, 2401 Carey Blvd., Hutchinson. Emily Rozan Wilson, 86, passed away Friday, August 6, 2021, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson, KS.

Rosie was born September 12, 1934, in Little River, KS, the daughter of Lemuel R. and Ruth T. (Bates) Hendrickson.  On May 10, 1952, she married Robert (Bob) Wilson, to this union they were blessed with four children, Robert Jr., James, Mark and Christina.

Rosie was a native of Little River and then moved to San Diego, CA. when she and Bob were married. They later moved back to Hutchinson where they raised their children.   She loved working in her garden and baking for her family. Rosie worked for the Hutchinson Library and retired after 19 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; step- father, Marvin F. Naylor; son, Robert L. Wilson Jr.; two sisters, Marjorie Stiggins and Twila Elmore and three brothers, Lee Hendrickson, Jim Hendrickson and Donnie Hendrickson.

Rosie is survived by her husband, Bob; daughter, Christina R. Wilson of Mexico, NY; two sons, James W. Wilson and Mark R.
