James “Jim” Kenneth Riley, Jr., 49, died at home on Sunday, January 30, 2022 in Newton.

Jim was born on May 2, 1972 in Newton, to James Kenneth, Sr. and Carolyn Faye (Beaushaw) Riley. He was the eldest of two sons.

Jim married Christine Newman on November 26, 1991 in El Dorado. They had two beautiful daughters, Jennifer Kathleen and Melissa Elaine. Jim would tell you that becoming a father was the best thing he ever did. Although the marriage would not stand the test of time their love for each other and their children certainly did.

Jim was a kind man and an animal lover. He enjoyed all outdoor activities such as camping and fishing. He was an avid fan of sports including Red Wings hockey, Kansas City Chiefs football, and NASCAR.

A Licensed HVAC Technician by trade, Jim’s true passion was Landscaping and he took great pride in pointing out locations on which he had worked.

Jim was preceded in death by his father: Kenny, and his youngest daughter: Melissa. He is survived by his mother; Carolyn; daughter: Jennifer; brother: Robert; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends whom he considered his family; and last but not least, his beloved dog Gus.

Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 12, 2022 at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Chip Bungard presiding. There will be a private family interment at a later day.

Bertha Joan Clark, 82, of McPherson, peacefully passed away on Monday, February 7, 2022, surrounded by family at her home in McPherson.&nbsp; She was retired from Sanofi Winthrop Pharmaceutical/Abbott Laboratories in McPherson.

Bertha was born on August 28, 1939, in St. Louis, MO, the daughter of Aldyth (McCall) and Thomas Presley McGinnis, Sr.&nbsp; On August 28, 1956, Bertha was united in marriage to Robert Louis Clark in Richmond.&nbsp; They were married for 65 years before his passing on December 24, 2021.&nbsp;

Survivors include: two daughters, Tamera Alexander of Newton, and Coleen Haddox (Michael) of South Coffeyville, OK; a brother, Bill West (Jan) of Las Vegas, NV; a sister, Dorothy Malone of Richmond, MO; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and three siblings, Lois White, John West, and Thomas “Sonny” McGinnis, Jr.

Gladys Charlene Anderson, 96, of Lindsborg passed Monday, February 7, 2022 at Bethany Home Assisted Living.  Gladys was born November 15, 1925, at home near Crystal Lake , IA. She was the daughter of the late Jens Christian and Esther Evelyn (Johnson) Mortensen.  

Gladys married Charlie Raymond Anderson on December 26, 1949 at the home where she was born near Crystal Lake, IA.  

Gladys was a graduate of Grinnell College in Grinnell Iowa.  She worked as a teacher in Iowa and New Mexico from 1945 until 1972, when she and her family moved to Lindsborg.  Gladys was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Lindsborg. She co-founded their business Anderson Butik with her husband Charlie in 1973.

She is survived by her sons: John Anderson (Patricia) of Flora Vista, NM, and Dean Anderson of Lindsborg;  grandchildren: Donald Anderson, of Mesilla, NM, Jeff Anderson (Jenifer Zamora), of Albuquerque, NM, Sara Anderson, of Gothenburg, Sweden, and Emma Anderson (Chad Uhl), of Stockholm, Sweden; great grandchildren: Axel Anderson and Miriam Anderson; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Gladys is preceded in death by her parents; husband: Charlie; brother: John Mortensen; sister: Laura O’Mara; and nephew: Robert O’Mara.   

Burial services have taken place and a memorial service will be announced and held in May.

Richard L. Bookout, 68, of Hutchinson, passed away February 7, 2022 at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson. He was born January 31, 1954 in Atchinson, to Lola Douglas and Paul Bookout. 

Richard was well known for tearing up the “drag strip” and going to car shows. He was married to Darlene Lemler on September 7, 1973, who preceded him in death. 

Richard's survivors include, daughter, RaChelle Rush; daughter in law, Jennifer Bookout; grandchildren and many friends. He is preceded in death by his mother, Lola; wife, Darlene and son, Brian Bookout.&nbsp;

Wesley James Bontrager, 81, of Buhler, died on February 7, 2022, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born August 2, 1940, in Hutchinson, to Andrew and Nora (Yutzy) Bontrager.

Wes graduated from Central Christian High School in 1959, and Hutchinson Community College in 1964. He was a lifelong farmer as well as a Xerox technician for thirty years. Wes loved spending time with his family, farming, and basketball as well as all sports.&nbsp; He also loved his churches, Buhler Mennonite and Yoder Mennonite.

On November 26, 1965, he married Marilyn Louise Strausz, in Buhler. They shared 56 years together.

Wes is survived by: wife, Marilyn Bontrager, Buhler; sons, James (Diane) Bontrager, McPherson; Wendell (Marie) Bontrager, Haven; Warren (Emilie) Bontrager, Buhler; daughter, Nori Bontrager King (Nolan), Cochranville, Pennsylvania; 15 grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Weaver (Dick), Highlands Ranch, Colorado; and brother, Marion Bontrager (Judy), Glendale, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by: his parents Andrew and Nora Yutzy Bontrager; brothers, Maynard Bontrager, Ken Bontrager, Clarence “Clay” Bontrager; and his grandparents.

Freddie “Vico” Mendoza Jr., 81, of Hutchinson, died February 6, 2022, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born May 8, 1940, in Hutchinson, to Freddie and Rafailia (Flores) Mendoza.

Freddie attended grade school in Partridge and then Junior High in Hutchinson and graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1958. He attended Hutchinson Community College.

Freddie served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1964. He worked as a jailer for the Hutchinson Police Department for a few years before going to work as a machinist at Cessna/Eaton and worked there until he retired. Freddie was a diehard Raiders and Yankees fan. He enjoyed long bike rides and spending time with his family, just watching his grandkids at play. Freddie was especially proud of their school activities and accomplishments. He was of the Catholic faith.

On July 14, 2000, Freddie married Charlotte Ann (Meyers) Hill, in Hutchinson. She survives.

Also surviving are: his children, Jesse Mendoza of Wichita, Carmen Macias (Andres) of Brownsville, TX, Jacki Mendoza of Hutchinson, Mario Mendoza of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Dominic Mendoza, Diego Macias, Lionel Macias, Kahlil Mendoza, Kylan Mendoza, Kade Mendoza, Damian Hernandez-Mendoza; siblings, Gloria Rodriguez of Dodge City, Ernie Mendoza (Toby) of South Hutchinson; and numerous extended family members.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; siblings, Felix, Guadalupe, Margarito, Esteban, Carlos, Victor, and Linda Sanchez Hernandez.

John Leroy Scott, 65, passed away February 4, 2022, at his home, in Hutchinson.&nbsp; He was born November 16, 1956, in Hutchinson, to Graydon Leroy and Dora Mignon (Thrasher) Scott.&nbsp; John was a graduate of Hutchinson High School.

John’s passion was in the food service world and was a long-term employee of Luby’s Cafeteria in Arizona and Texas.&nbsp; He was of the Methodist faith.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Graydon Leroy Scott and Dora Mignon Scott, and a nephew, Troy Harrell.

He is survived by:&nbsp; his sisters, Laura (Jim) Harrell of Sardis, MS, and Nan (Jerry) Hawver of Hutchinson; brother, Steve (Michelle) Scott of Wichita; niece, Jill (Scott) Peck; nephews, Tab Harrell, Chris Hawver, Matt

Scott, and Corey Scott; and numerous great-nephews and cousins.

John’s constant companion was his dog, Gizmo.&nbsp; His favorite spot was the Hutchinson Dog Park, where they spent many hours together.&nbsp;

Christine’s life began on April 24, 1967, in El Dorado. She was the daughter of Robert and Janet (Patterson) Allison. 

Christine graduated from high school in California and later continued her education at Butler County Community College. She worked as a CNA and med aide for several area nursing homes including Wheat State Manor in Whitewater and Lake Point in El Dorado. Christine continued her CNA duties as a home health aid until she was no longer able to work. Three of Christine’s favorite things in life were her coffee, shopping and spending time with her grandson and family. 

She is survived by her sons Jacob (Shelby) Allison of McPherson, and Michael Allison of Newton; fiancé Kenneth Goff of Potwin, grandson Kaden Allison and her siblings Robert Allison of Potwin, Cathy Klingborn of Wichita, and Michael D. Allison of El Dorado. Christine passed away on Monday January 31, 2022, at El Dorado Health and Rehabilitation. She is preceded in death by her mother Janet. 

Private graveside services will be held at a later date at Mc Gill Cemetery, Potwin.&nbsp;

Melvin Leroy Barnett, 77, passed away January 19, 2022, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.&nbsp; He was born June 14, 1944, in Paola, to Marion B. and Phoebe E. (McCarty) Barnett.

Melvin was a 1962 graduate of Parker Rural High School, Parker.&nbsp; He received a bachelor’s degree in 1968, and a Master Degree in Education in 1984, both from Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg.&nbsp; Melvin taught and coached in various public middle schools and high schools throughout Kansas, and was also an ordained minister.&nbsp; He was a member of the Hutchinson Sons of American Legion, and the Hutchinson Breakfast Lions Club, serving as Past District Governor.&nbsp; Melvin also was a member of The Father’s House, Hutchinson.

He enjoyed trains, reading Western books and novels, and was an avid John Wayne fan.&nbsp; Melvin never met a stranger.&nbsp; He held various titles throughout his career, such as teacher, coach, and administrator, but his most cherished titles were son, husband, father, grandfather, soon to be great-grandfather, brother, and friend.

On December 29, 1961, Melvin married Elizabeth Ann Prentice, in Mound City, KS.&nbsp; They shared over 60 years of marriage.

He is survived by:&nbsp; his wife, Elizabeth Barnett of Hutchinson; children, Debi (fiancé, Kirk Kinast) Barnett of Hutchinson, Becky Barnett of St. Petersburg, FL, Mark Barnett of Hutchinson, Marty (April) Barnett of Owasso, OK, and Matthew (Camille) Barnett of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Aron Kirkendoll, Haley (Shayne) Rose, Isaac Barnett, Phoebe Barnett, Elisha Barnett, Thomas Barnett, Belle Barnett, Calvin Barnett, Samuel Barnett, Leila Barnett, and Elsie Mae Barnett; great-granddaughter (due in February); and brother-in-law, John Polley of Parker.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Connie Polley.

(McCarty) Barnett.Melvin was a 1962 graduate of Parker Rural High School, Parker.&nbsp; He received a bachelor’s degree in 1968, and a Master Degree in Education in 1984, both from Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg.&nbsp; Melvin taught and coached in various public middle schools and high schools throughout Kansas, and was also an ordained minister.&nbsp; He was a member of the Hutchinson Sons of American Legion, and the Hutchinson Breakfast Lions Club, serving as Past District Governor.&nbsp; Melvin also was a member of The Father’s House, Hutchinson.He enjoyed trains, reading Western books and novels, and was an avid John Wayne fan.&nbsp; Melvin never met a stranger.&nbsp; He held various titles throughout his career, such as teacher, coach, and administrator, but his most cherished titles were son, husband, father, grandfather, soon to be great-grandfather, brother, and friend.On December 29, 1961, Melvin married Elizabeth Ann Prentice, in Mound City, KS.&nbsp; They shared over 60 years of marriage.He is survived by:&nbsp; his wife, Elizabeth Barnett of Hutchinson; children, Debi (fiancé, Kirk Kinast) Barnett of Hutchinson, Becky Barnett of St. Petersburg, FL, Mark Barnett of Hutchinson, Marty (April) Barnett of Owasso, OK, and Matthew (Camille) Barnett of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Aron Kirkendoll, Haley (Shayne) Rose, Isaac Barnett, Phoebe Barnett, Elisha Barnett, Thomas Barnett, Belle Barnett, Calvin Barnett, Samuel Barnett, Leila Barnett, and Elsie Mae Barnett; great-granddaughter (due in February); and brother-in-law, John Polley of Parker.Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Connie Polley.Celebration of Life service will be 11 a.m. Friday, February 18, 2022, at The Father’s House Church, 1505 E. 20th Street, Hutchinson.&nbsp; Graveside service and burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday, February 19, 2022, in the Parker (Highland) Cemetery, Parker.

Eugene H. “Gene” Smith, 93, died Feb. 7, 2022 in Kingman.

He was born Dec. 20, 1929, at Hutchinson the son of Linn and Mary Hess Smith.

Gene was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War.

She was united in marriage to James Slaughter on May 3, 1947. This marriage was blessed with two daughters, Mary Lou, and Donna Rae. They would later divorce. Elsie attended nursing school in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She worked as a registered nurse at Washington General Hospital in Fayetteville. Elsie later moved to Newton, Kansas where she worked at Presbyterian Nursing Home and Hesston Hospital. She later moved to San Francisco, California where she met and married Stan Jouanne. She worked at South City San Francisco Hospital for several years and later owned her own boarding and care home. After losing Stan to a stoke, she retired to Spokane, Washington to be near her youngest Daughter, Donna. Eleven years later she decided to make her home in Florence, Kansas to be near her oldest daughter, Mary.

Elsie was called to her heavenly home on February 6, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents James and Mary Mae Slape; her four brothers Melvin, Leroy, Dolton, and Orville; her youngest daughter Donna Rae.

She is survived by Mary (Ronnie) Shipman of Florence; her sister Ina Davis of Kingman, Arizona; 8 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and 9 great great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Cleola Grace Pankratz Epp Franz, age 100, died February 6, 2022, in Schowalter Villa at Hesston, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born June 29, 1921 to Peter F. and Bertha (Smith) Pankratz on a farm near Henderson, Nebraska. As a youth she was baptized by Rev. A. W. Friesen and a lifelong member of Bethesda Mennonite Church at Henderson.

Cleola was a graduate of Henderson High School in 1939 in the same class as her future husband and partner, Edwin J Epp.&nbsp; She received her Nebraska School Training Certificate from York College, York, Nebraska in August, 1941. She taught elementary school in country schools in rural York County before transferring to the Henderson area where she taught two addition years in School District 73 West.&nbsp; Her formal teaching career ended when she was married to Edwin J Epp at Bethesda Mennonite Church on August 30, 1945.

Cleola and Ed established their first home on a farm south of Henderson. At that point in her life she committed herself to being a housewife and mother.&nbsp; After twelve years of farming, she and Ed moved into Henderson when Ed changed his own career from farming to teaching at Henderson Community School. During those teaching years Cleola worked at the school cafeteria and as administrative assistant in the superintendent office. Later, Cleola helped her parents by managing their retail business, the Henderson Dry Goods Store.

Cleola was dedicated to being a mom, however, maintained her interests in education and business. She contracted with Field Enterprises, Worldbook Company, as an area manager and later with the Successful Living book company as district manager. These adventures were in her words, “contributing factors to a fulfilling life.”

On November 19, 1998, Cleola married George Franz at Bethesda Mennonite Church, following the death of her husband, Ed, in February 1985. She enjoyed eleven years of marriage to George who provided enriching companionship as they aged together.&nbsp; George died in May of 2009.

Cleola is survived by one sister, Allegra Pankratz Gunn; one daughter, Verlene Ruth Epp Garber (Ron); and two sons, Edwin LaVerne Epp (Marilyn) and Galen Wynn Epp (Cindy).

In addition, she is survived by one step-son, Greg Franz (Janet), and one step-daughter, Kathy Ripley (Roger).

She leaves to remember her eight grandchildren, Gyles (Kathy) Garber, Joel (Laura) Garber, Jarrett (Jennifer) Garber, Tyler (Melissa) Epp, Paul Epp, Susan Epp, Michael Epp, and Annie Epp.&nbsp; Also four step grandchildren, Daniel (Andria) Ripley, Andy (Amanda) Ripley and Christa Franz Fulmer (Shaun) and Lars Hakensen. These families provided Cleola with 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, all of whom survive.

Cleola was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Ed and George; one infant son, Mark Alan; sisters, Sadie Friesen and Dorthy Goertzen; and brother Harlan Pankratz.

Howard Christian Birky, 81, passed away Sunday, February 6, 2022, at Schowalter Villa, Hesston, Kansas.&nbsp;

Howard was born to Harvey Christian and Prudence (Habegger) Birky on January 27, 1941, in Goshen, Indiana.&nbsp; His sister, Grace (Birky) Busenitz, was his only sibling, born three years earlier. Howard’s childhood years were spent living in Illinois and Indiana, and then Florida and Alabama where his parents served with the Children’s Bible Mission.&nbsp; During these years, Howard realized his need for forgiveness of sin and trusted Jesus as his Savior.

Howard attended high school at Ben Lippen, a Christian boarding school in Asheville, North Carolina, and graduated from Bethany Christian High School, Goshen, Indiana, in 1959.&nbsp; Howard attended Goshen College for three years and then transferred to Grace University, Omaha, Nebraska, graduating with a B.A. degree in 1965.&nbsp;

Howard and Anna Beth (Unruh) were married June 25, 1966, in Hesston, Kansas.&nbsp; Immediately they entered Mennonite Voluntary Service where they served 18 months in Marlboro, Alberta, Canada, supporting the local church program in a Metis Indian village and were active in community development.&nbsp; After completing their voluntary service assignment in Corpus Christi, Texas, they studied at the Spanish language school in Edinburg, Texas, and assumed leadership responsibilities in a Spanish mission church in Premont, Texas.&nbsp; During this time, their daughter Mary was born.

In early 1973, Howard entered training with Provident Bookstore in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, for seven months, and their daughter Elisabeth was born.&nbsp; Howard worked at Provident Bookstore in Goshen, Indiana, and later as a graphic arts buyer at Scripture Press in Wheaton, Illinois, an organization producing Christian curriculum materials.&nbsp; During this time, Sara, Hannah, and John joined the family.

In the early 1980’s, Howard and Anna Beth moved to central Kansas to be closer to relatives.&nbsp; The Birky family lived in Hesston, Kansas, for six years.&nbsp; Howard taught two years at the Newton Bible Christian School, and then worked at King Construction and later AGCO, from which he retired in 2010.&nbsp; During his early retirement, he had several surgeries.&nbsp; He recovered to the extent that he could still do outdoor work, which he enjoyed so much.&nbsp; Howard’s dream to have “a place in the country” came true when the family purchased and moved into the Unruh family home place near Goessel.&nbsp; He thoroughly enjoyed working outside on the three acres.&nbsp; He has left his imprint on the home place, lived in for more than 33 years.

Howard enjoyed other interests as well, encouraging and facilitating men’s ministry activities in the churches attended.&nbsp; He also thoroughly enjoyed serving as a board member of Goessel’s Mennonite Heritage &amp; Agricultural Museum for a number of years.&nbsp; Howard was faithful to his family, his church, and his Lord Jesus.

Preceding Howard in death were his parents, Harvey and Prudence Birky; sister, Grace Busenitz; and brothers-in-law, Bob and Jim Unruh.&nbsp; Howard is survived by his wife Anna Beth of Goessel; five children and their spouses:&nbsp; Mary (Mark) Collier of Omaha, Nebraska; Liz (Chad) Peters of Lincoln, Nebraska; Sara (Ted) Tucker of Dayton, Tennessee; Hannah (Mike) Kroeker of LeRoy, Minnesota; and John (Lisa) Birky of the Middle East; 16 grandchildren; brother-in-law, William Busenitz, Potwin, Kansas; and sister-in-law, Karen Unruh, Hesston, Kansas.

Linda June Beyer, 73, passed away February 6, 2022, at Wesley Towers Thorne Center, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was born June 26, 1948, in Great Bend, KS, to Alvin and Irene (Gliessner) Holopirek.

Linda was a 1966 graduate of Otis Bison High School, Otis, KS, and a 1968 graduate of Salt City Business College, Hutchinson. She was employed as a receptionist at the State of Kansas Unemployment Division for over 30 years. Linda was active for many years, serving in various roles in Beta Sigma Phi. and a member of Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson.

Linda was an extremely active member of the V.F.W. Bob Campbell Post #1361 Ladies Auxiliary of Hutchinson, for 31 years, serving as district and local board member positions. You would often find Linda decorating the Post for every holiday, organizing party events and making sure the Post was in order.

Linda loved to go antiquing with her daughters, visiting with friends, adored playing and caring for her cats, gardening, and most importantly, loved the time she shared with her four grandchildren.

On August 1, 1970, she married James Albert Beyer in Timken.&nbsp; They shared over 51 years of marriage.

Linda is survived by:&nbsp; her husband, James Beyer of Hutchinson; daughters, Leslie (Jordan) Hind of Gardner, and Patty (Brian) Teufel of Goddard; granddaughters, Katy Teufel, Ali Teufel, Juneau Hind, and River Hind; and brother, Perry (Karla) Holopirek of Great Bend.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Terry Holopirek.

Memorial liturgy will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 18, 2022, at Elliott Mortuary, with Father Aaron Spexarth officiating.&nbsp; Celebration of Life gathering will follow the service at the V.F.W., 328 N. You would often find Linda decorating the Post for every holiday, organizing party events and making sure the Post was in order.Linda loved to go antiquing with her daughters, visiting with friends, adored playing and caring for her cats, gardening, and most importantly, loved the time she shared with her four grandchildren.On August 1, 1970, she married James Albert Beyer in Timken.&nbsp; They shared over 51 years of marriage.Linda is survived by:&nbsp; her husband, James Beyer of Hutchinson; daughters, Leslie (Jordan) Hind of Gardner, and Patty (Brian) Teufel of Goddard; granddaughters, Katy Teufel, Ali Teufel, Juneau Hind, and River Hind; and brother, Perry (Karla) Holopirek of Great Bend.She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Terry Holopirek.Memorial liturgy will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 18, 2022, at Elliott Mortuary, with Father Aaron Spexarth officiating.&nbsp; Celebration of Life gathering will follow the service at the V.F.W., 328 N. Phillip Benecio Caudillo, 88, passed away February
5, 2022 surrounded by his family.

He was born on August 22, 1933 in Hutchinson, to Sebastian F. and Sanjuana Mora Caudillo.

He married Katherine Pritchard in Newkirk,
Oklahoma.&nbsp; She survives.

He is also survived by his children Steve
(Dolores), Robbie, Robin (Richard) Hobbs, Randy (Christa), Renee (Vernon)
Miller, and Rachelle (Tim) Crater.&nbsp; He
adored his 26 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and expecting a great-great
grandchild in June.&nbsp; Also surviving are
brothers, Gabe and Sebastian, and sister, Irene Owston.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, sons,
Rickie and Ronnie, brother, Carmen, and sisters Mary Mendoza and Judy Ruiz.

He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps
from 1951 to 1953.&nbsp; He was a Korean War Veteran
and was honorably discharged.&nbsp; He had the
opportunity to go on a Kansas Honor Flight where he had the privilege of
setting the wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Phil was an extraordinary man with a personality
loved by all.&nbsp; He was friendly, kind,
genuine, honest, dependable, and quick-witted.&nbsp;
He was a talented, skilled handyman who enjoyed helping anyone who had a
project or service to be done.&nbsp; He never said
“no” when he was asked to help no matter the job.

Richard Dean Isaacs, 55, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2022 at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis. He was born on December 12, 1966 in Topeka to Danny Edward and Carol Jean (Cloud) Isaacs. He was later adopted by his grandmother, Glenda Isaacs at the age of 7 and resided with her until the early 1990's. In 1994 he made Medicine Lodge his home and most recently lived in Wichita. Richard enjoyed many things, but the top of his list were garage sales, thrift store shopping and driving around on dirt roads listening to music. He would proudly display his treasures that he would find on his dresser or nightstand for all to see. He enjoyed going out to eat, but always ordered a cheeseburger no matter where he went. He loved his coffee and sweet treats, calculators, flashlight, joking with his friends and any opportunity to be around animals. He is survived by his twin brother, Robert Isaacs. Richard is preceded in death by his grandmother, Glenda Isaacs. Cremation has taken place. A graveside memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge.&nbsp;&nbsp;

James “Jim” Kenneth Riley, Jr., 49, died at home on Sunday, January 30, 2022 in Newton, Kansas.Jim was born on May 2, 1972 in Newton, to James Kenneth, Sr. and Carolyn Faye (Beaushaw) Riley. He was the eldest of two sons.Jim married Christine Newman on November 26, 1991 in El Dorado. They had two beautiful daughters, Jennifer Kathleen and Melissa Elaine. Jim would tell you that becoming a father was the best thing he ever did. Although the marriage would not stand the test of time their love for each other and their children certainly did.Jim was a kind man and an animal lover. He enjoyed all outdoor activities such as camping and fishing. He was an avid fan of sports including Red Wings hockey, Kansas City Chiefs football, and NASCAR.A Licensed HVAC Technician by trade, Jim’s true passion was Landscaping and he took great pride in pointing out locations on which he had worked.Jim was preceded in death by his father: Kenny, and his youngest daughter: Melissa. He is survived by his mother; Carolyn; daughter: Jennifer; brother: Robert; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends whom he considered his family; and last but not least, his beloved dog Gus.Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 12, 2022 at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Chip Bungard presiding. Karen Jones, 85, died January 29, 2022 at Pine Village in Moundridge Kansas. &nbsp;She was born on March 5, 1938 in Hutchinson.&nbsp;&nbsp; Her parents were A.E. (Earl) Jones and Helen Edith (Phillips) Jones.

Karen attended Mitchell Grade School, graduated from Hutchinson High School, received her Bachelors of Science degree from Bethany Nazarene College (SNU), in Bethany Oklahoma, and a Master’s Degree from Kansas State University.

She taught Middle School, Home Economics in Newton, Kansas for thirty five years at Chisholm Middle School.&nbsp; She was active in the National, State, and local Home Economic Organizations; and the Kansas National Educational Association.

Karen enjoyed cooking, sewing, doing receptions, preparing meals for various groups at her church, and cheering the KSU Wildcats.

She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Leonard Earl Jones, Dr. Richard (Helen Marie) Jones, and sister Helen Louise (Arlo) Newell.

Karen is survived by her sister Barbara Jean Jones of Newton, and her extended family Jerry and Joanne Supernois of Newton, Mark and Holly Supernois of Wichita, Lisa (Dan) Timmons of Newton, Kristi Bueno of Newton, and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as great and great-great nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the First Church of the Nazarene, 1000 North Main, Newton, at 10:30 a.m., Friday February 11, 2022.&nbsp;&nbsp; Visitation will be Thursday, February 10, 2022 at Petersen Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.&nbsp;

 She was a 1945 graduate of The Rayen School and was voted "most athletic" by her high school classmates.&nbsp; 

On September 10th, 1946, Toni and James became life long partners for 53 years.&nbsp; She then attended Youngstown College Business School while working as a bookkeeper until she had her first child.&nbsp; She then graduated from Beauty School in 1956.&nbsp; To enable her to be at home with her children, she later opened " Toni's Beauty Salon" in her home in 1962.&nbsp; She worked again as a bookkeeper for St. Paul's Catholic Church in Westerville, Ohio from 1982 until she retired in 1998.&nbsp; She will always be remembered for her unconditional love for her children and always referred to them as her "babies" no matter their ages.&nbsp; She loved watching football, especially the Ohio State Buckeyes.&nbsp; She also enjoyed putting puzzles together which numbered close to a thousand.

She is survived by her seven children; Drew ( Mickey) Hutson, Galena, OH; Beth ( Tom) Warner, Napoleon, OH; Bea (Denice) Hutson, Inman; Jimmy ( Sandy) Hutson, Wauseon, OH; Toni ( Mike) Dziak, Lorain, OH; Timmy ( Sandy) Hutson, Defiance, OH; Toby ( Angela) Hutson, Westerville, OH.&nbsp; Also survived by 18 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild, along with several nieces and nephews.

Dee Dee’s life began on October 7, 1954, in Dalhart. She was the daughter of Jake and Margaret (Doss) Barlow. 

She worked as a bartender in Guymon, OK,  and was part of the doctoring crew at Hitch’s feedlot in Hardesty, OK. She worked hard and loved to learn. All of her friends’ kids were hers too, she was Mama DeeDee to many. She had a quick wit and enjoyed music, dancing, playing pool and get-togethers with friends and family. She was well known for her fiery spirit and red hair. She dearly loved animals. Legend has it that her mother wore combat boots. 

Dee Dee was united in marriage to Steve Lang on November 18, 1983, in Hardesty, OK.  Dee Dee’s greatest joy was her family which includes her husband Steve Lang of Greeley, CO; daughter Lindsey Lang of Greeley, CO; sister Cheryl January of Pryor, OK; brother Joe Barlow of Amarillo, TX; mother-in-law Frances Gehrke of Herington; sisters-in-law Susan Sponsler of Montague, CA; and Sheri Alvey of Herington; brother-in-law Scott Lang of Abilene; grand-dogger Ginger of Greeley, CO and several nieces and nephews. 

 Dee Dee passed away on February 3, 2022, at the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, CO. She is preceded in death by her parents, father-in-law Richard Gehrke, niece Jill Coburn, step-son Brandon Lang, and nephew Josh Lang. Her family will gather with friends on Thursday February 10, 2022, from 5-7 p.m. at Yazel Megli Funeral Home, Herington. Her funeral service will be held on Friday February 11, 2022, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Herington. She will be laid to rest in Sunset Hill Cemetery.

Markley Harold “Mark” Zwink, age 68, passed away on January 25, 2022, in Boulder, CO.&nbsp; Born on May 9, 1953, at Newton; he was the son of Robert A. and Vivian M. (Barsell) Zwink.

Mark graduated from Macksville High School in 1971 and later joined the US Navy.&nbsp; After completing his military service, he moved to Larned, which would be his home for the rest of his life.&nbsp; Mark attended Barton County Community College.&nbsp; He was a member of the First Christian Church of Larned.

Mark held a number of jobs in Larned.&nbsp; He worked at KANS Radio as a broadcaster and in other capacities.&nbsp; There, on occasion, he greatly enjoyed serving as sportscaster for local and area high school games.&nbsp; He later was employed by The Tiller and Toiler newspaper, where his duties included writing the column Zwink or Zwim, which often included Mark’s unique perspective on local events and personalities.&nbsp; He then worked on the custodial staff for the Fort Larned School District, making many lifelong friendships with fellow school employees and students.&nbsp; At the time of his death, he was a part-time employee at the Larned Community Center, helping with activities and events and assisting regulars and visitors young and old.&nbsp;

Mark was an avid sports fan, enthusiastically following his favorite teams and athletes whether they were at the professional levels or in the youth leagues. He was a genuine people person.&nbsp; His easy smile, wry wit, sense of humor, and colorful, engaging personality will be missed by many.&nbsp;

Mark was preceded in death by both parents. He is survived by brothers David Zwink, Mississauga, ON, Canada; Timothy (Ann) Zwink, Piedmont, OK;&nbsp; Joel (Patti) Zwink, Pacific City, OR; and Jonathan (Janice) Zwink, Topeka; and sister Debra (George) Susoeff, Mapleton, OR; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews; and his many, many friends in the Larned community.

Mark’s family would especially like to extend its heartfelt thanks to those close friends of Mark who assisted him during his last, brief illness.

He is survived by brothers David Zwink, Mississauga, ON, Canada; Timothy (Ann) Zwink, Piedmont, OK;&nbsp; Joel (Patti) Zwink, Pacific City, OR; and Jonathan (Janice) Zwink, Topeka; and sister Debra (George) Susoeff, Mapleton, OR; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews; and his many, many friends in the Larned community.Mark’s family would especially like to extend its heartfelt thanks to those close friends of Mark who assisted him during his last, brief illness.Memorial services are pending and will be announced at a later date.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Farmington Cemetery, Macksville.

Kent W. Pruett, 56, died Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at Stafford County Hospital, Stafford.&nbsp; Born April 16, 1965 at St. John he was the son of Harvey and Joan Hathaway Pruett.&nbsp; 

He was Public Works Superintendent for the City of Stafford.&nbsp; On September 5, 2018 he married Tammy Johnson at St. John.&nbsp; Kent is survived by his wife: Tammy.&nbsp; Daughter: Brittany (Matthew) Petler.&nbsp; Step-children: Jamie (Isaac) Downing, Shayla (Theron) Puls, Dalton Osenbaugh, Billy Pfister, Danny Pfister and Bobby Farr.&nbsp; Brothers: Dan Pruett, Jack Blazier and Bobby (Denise) Applehans. Five grandchildren.

Junior Jay Base, 67, of McPherson, KS, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 4, 2022, at McPherson Hospital. He worked at Central Plastics, McPherson as a fork lift &amp; grinding operator and most recently worked in the fabrication department. Junior was born on November 27, 1954, in Moundridge, KS, the son of Ralph and Lavada Marie (Nightingale) Base. On April 4, 1982, Junior was united in marriage to Darla Koehn. He later married Jill Anderson on February 14, 1987. Survivors include: his daughter, Mariah (Travis) Sawyer of McPherson, KS; one grandson, Jordan Sawyer of McPherson, KS; a brother, Earl (Chloe) Base of Galva, KS; two nieces, Teri (Dwayne) Mastre of Galva, KS and Audrey (Brandon) Koehn of Galva, KS; and many extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law, Verna Base. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Monday, February 7, 2022, at Stockham Family Funeral Home.
