Janet L. Daily 61, died Wednesday May 11, 2022 at her Newton residence.&nbsp; She was born on March 10, 1961 in Wichita.

She met the love of her life in 1985 at a crime prevention seminar in Wichita and on March 10, 1986 she married Jim Daily in Wichita and he survives of the home. She was a graduate of East High in Wichita, Allen County Community College and National College.

Janet was a faithful member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Newton.

Janet led a life as a servant leader. She served several Kansas communities as a police officer including Humboldt; Clearwater where she earned the rank of Deputy Chief and worked with children in the DARE program; and Hoisington. She also worked in the central Kansas community corrections as an intensive supervisory corrections officer.&nbsp; She later worked in the Barton County Attorney’s office in Great Bend.

Janet was active in the St. Mary Parish where she practiced active faith working as the food service manager and substitute teacher at the school, as a Sachraciston and Eucharistic Minister. Many people in Newton will remember Janet for her time working at the South branch of the former First Bank of Newton.

Janet’s greatest joy was being a wife, mother and aunt. She loved caring for her family. She often baked wedding and birthday cakes and shared paracord bracelets she made. She also enjoyed the hunt to add to her collection of collectable plates and spoons many dating back to the 1950’s.&nbsp; Whatever relationship you had with Janet she was your friend.

She is survived by her husband Jim of the home; daughter Alex; son’s Scott and Jason Daily; mother Theresa McPhail; brother Tom Oswald and sisters Cindy Holt and Tammy Pagget. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren and numerous nieces nephews and friends.

Merrill Bruce “Mick” Amend, 66, of Alden, passed away May 11, 2022, at his home. He was born October 6, 1955, in Advance, Indiana, the son of Donald and Barbara Caldwell Amend. 

Mick has resided in Alden since 2005, formerly of Sterling. He served in the United States Army from 1972 until 1975. Mick was a painter, machinist, welder, and HVAC technician. He had a strong faith and was a true believer in Christ. Mick was a member of the Sterling American Legion Post #128. He enjoyed fishing, loved all kinds of animals, and most of all enjoyed spending time with his family. 

On November 7, 1998, Mick was united in marriage with Robin Buster in Lyons, Kansas. She survives of the home. He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Kristie Young of Bennett, CO; two sisters, Robin Masters of Beech Grove, IN, and Janet Belford of Lebanon, IN; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mick is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, David Amend.&nbsp;

David R. Olson was born June 24th, 1950 in Newton. He was the 4th of 6 children. 

In 1968, he joined the Air Force and was stationed in Spain from 1968 to 1974 during the war in Vietnam. He always spoke fondly of his time in Spain and it was the beginning of his lifelong journey as a language learner. 

When he left his military service he worked for a number of years as a histologist in medical labs, as a school custodian and finally worked in a die shop for a plastics company. He always described himself as a biologist by training.

He moved to Lindsborg in 1990, with his wife Karen J. Olson. 

In the 70's he fell in love with martial arts, learning various styles, studying Xingyi, Taiji and Aikido up until his death. He was also an amateur photographer, and knife and jewelry maker. He enjoyed spending time in nature, and enjoyed learning the names of different trees and plants.


He leaves 2 sons, Morgan and Davin, and a daughter, Clarissa; 1 grandson, Owen, 1 brother, Tony Olson, and sisters Ann Robins and Mary Snyder.

 He was predeceased by his wife, Karen, parents John and Clarissa, and brothers John Jr and Richard.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Lois Mae Howe, 96, of Lindsborg passed away Friday, May 6, 2022, at Lindsborg Community Hospital.  Lois was born December 12, 1925, in Chicago, IL to the late Clarence F. and the late Elva (Palmquist) Nelson.  Lois was united in marriage to Donald E. Howe on August 6, 1950, in Salina, KS.

She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Lindsborg.  Lois was owner of Howe’s Building Supplies and Decorator Shop, with her husband, where she worked as the bookkeeper and interior decorator.

She is survived by her sons: Greg Howe (Angie) of Lindsborg, KS, and Brad Howe (Marsha) of Lindsborg, KS; grandchildren:  Maxwell Howe, Courtney Wylie (Chase), Jamie Howe, Emily Howe, and  Signe Howe; as well as 3 great-grandchildren.

Lois is preceded in death by her parents, husband: Donald; and brother: Dallas Nelson.

Cremation has been selected.  The family will be present for visitation from 5-7pm, Monday, June 6, at Bethany Lutheran Church.

Denise Kay Hallman, 64, died peacefully May 9, 2022, at Diversicare of Hutchinson, with her family by her side. She was born October 2, 1957, in Hutchinson, to Victor Hugo “Vic” and Jeanette (Pohlman) Hallman.

Denise graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1975, Hutchinson Community College in 1977, and the University of Northern Colorado, with her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education.&nbsp;

Denise worked many years as an administrative assistant, but her favorite “job” was volunteering.&nbsp; She was very involved in the Hutchinson and Reno County community, and spent countless hours helping individuals and organizations.&nbsp; Since 2007, Denise had been a volunteer with The Volunteer Center of Reno County.&nbsp; Some of the organizations Denise impacted were: the Boys and Girls Club, American Red Cross, Food Bank of Reno County, Early Education Center, Hutchinson Public Library, Communities That Care, and Cancer Council of Reno County.&nbsp; She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hutchinson, spending countless hours volunteering at the church. &nbsp;Denise was also involved with the Lion’s Club, Soroptimist Club, and PEO.&nbsp; Outside of volunteering, she enjoyed being an animal lover, and spending time with her family.&nbsp; Denise was always taking care of everyone and everything, putting them above herself.&nbsp;

Vera Elizabeth Durr, 97, died May 6, 2022, at Hester Care Center, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was born January 26, 1925, in Decatur County, to Shirley Dean and Bessie M. (Coulter) Cathcart.

Vera graduated from Oberlin High School, and attended Fort Hays State University. For over 24 years, she was an elementary school teacher.&nbsp; In addition, she was a member of the Delta Sigma Epsilon Sorority, PEO Chapter EK, and Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson.

On August 1, 1948, she married Merril Floyd Durr, in Oberlin.&nbsp; He died November 24, 2011, after they shared 63 years of marriage.

Vera is survived by:&nbsp; sons, Philip Durr of McPherson and Steven Durr (Teri) of Leawood; sister, Marian Joy Votapka; grandchildren, Ezekiel Durr (Tiffany), Kelsey Heavin (Scott), and Steven Scott Durr (Gena); great-grandchildren, Karley and Chevy Durr and Dillon and Walker Heavin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by:&nbsp; her parents; brothers, Virgil Cathcart and Lester Cathcart; and daughter-in-law, Kathleen Durr.

Silas Gene Borders, died May 10, 2022 at his home in Newton.

Gene was born March 21, 1966 in Eureka, to Silas and Hazel Borders. He graduated high school and went on to get his CDL to drive semi trucks.

It was during his driving that he met Marsha, and the two were wed on June 28, 1997 in Newton.

He is survived by his wife Marsha, his two daughters Kendra and Kayla, and his sister Tabitha Johnson.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents.

William Hope "Bill" Fairbrother, 54, of Newton, Kansas, passed away due to injures received in an automobile accident, at 5:48 pm, Tuesday, May 10th, 2022 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. Bill was born in Kingman, Kansas on December 27, 1967, a son of Janet Marlene (Patterson) and Glenn Ernest Fairbrother. Bill attended the Sunset Elementary School, Santa Fe Middle School, and graduated from Newton High School, Newton, Kansas in 1986. He then attended CAD Technical School in Arizona. Bill was a member of the Boy Scouts of America. Through the years Bill worked for Hehr Manufacturing for several years as a designer and then worked for Bunting Magnetic as a designer and was currently working for Builders Concrete as a truck driver. Bill enjoyed shooting and target practicing, going camping and fishing at Table Rock Lake, and spending time with his family, especially his great-nieces and nephews in which he would be found on the floor, playing with them. He is survived by his mother, Janet Fairbrother, of Missouri; his sister, Robin Stucky and husband Glenn, of McPherson; his nieces and nephews, David Ross Stucky, Sarah Nichole Denton and husband Mark, Aaron Michael Stucky, and Laura Beth Gamble and husband Robbie; his great-nieces and nephews, Eleanor and Boone Stucky and Oliver Gamble; other relatives and a host of friends. Bill was preceded in death by his father, Glenn Fairbrother and a great niece, Amelia Grace Stucky. Dale E. McConnell, 82, of Hutchinson, died May 9, 2022, at Hospice House. He was born January 16, 1940, in Hutchinson, to Harold and Helen (Rodine) McConnell.

Dale worked as and equipment supervisor for L.R. Foy Construction. Dale loved to spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Watching game shows was his favorite past time, especially Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune and he also enjoyed mowing his lawn and other outdoor tinkering projects. Dale was an avid Jayhawks and Chiefs fan.

On March 10, 1961, he married Donna Sue “Susan” Ruble, in Hutchinson. He loved being with Susan, they were together from the time they were 14 years old. They shared 60 years of marriage.

Dale is survived by: daughters, Kelly Everhart (Tracy) and Shannon Redenbaugh; son, Johnathan McConnell, all of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Sarah Stucky, Shelby Stucky, Kren Littrell (Curtis), Katie Young (Michael); and great-grandchildren, Hayden, Liam, and Brinley Littrell, Jacob and Korbin Young; siblings, Larry McConnell (Betty), Cheryll McConnell, and Caryl Woerz (Alan).

He was preceded in death by: his parents; wife, Susan McConnell; son, Michael Dale McConnell; granddaughter, Casey Marie McConnell; brothers, William “Bill”, Jay Dee, Doug, and Loren McConnell; and son-in-law, Arlan Redenbaugh.

Geraldine Madge “Jerry” Samms, 98, of Sylvia, died May 9, 2022, at Good Samaritan Society – Hutchinson Village. She was born November 30, 1923, in Sylvia, to Jerome J. and Marie M. (Josephson) Book.

Jerry graduated from Sylvia High School in 1941. She was a co-owner of E &amp; J Grocery Store in Sylvia for many years and was also the Postmaster of the Sylvia Post Office for many years before she retired. Jerry was an avid KU Jayhawks fan, but also cheered for K-State, the Royals, and the Chiefs. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and working crossword puzzles. &nbsp;Jerry was of the Methodist faith.

She married Edwin C. Samms. He died July 22, 1960.

Jerry is survived by: her son, Jeffrey Samms of Sylvia; grandchildren, Jennifer Adkins of Sergeant Bluff, IA, Patrick Samms of Hutchinson; great-grandson, Nathan Sevier of Wichita; and many extended family members.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; son, Kevin Samms; sisters, Betty Jean Book, Marilee Gatewood, Kathy Moffett; and brothers, Mike Book and Richard D. Book.

Along the way, on August 31, 1968, in Furley, Susie married David Ulbrich and became a military spouse and enjoyed becoming a loving mom to her beautiful children.

Susie loved camping, boating, playing pitch, and sewing. She never turned down a good cup of coffee. Family, especially her grandkids, were very important to Susie. She loved spending time with them and attending their sporting events. Not only did Susie enjoy watching the kids play basketball, but she also loved watching KU basketball!

Quinnie is survived by her daughters Lavona Christner of Herington, and Marchia (Mike) Havard of Liberty, MS; grandchildren Paul and James (Kate) Christner of Herington; great grandchildren Evan, Caden and Natalie Christner, sister-in-law Margaret Duck of Baker, LA, and niece Angie.

Theoplis “Theo” Johnson Jr., 59, passed away May 8, 2022 at
Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson.&nbsp; He was born August 7, 1962 in Hutchinson, the
son of Theoplis Johnson Sr. and Claudia (Brown) Hawthorne.

He attended Hutchinson High School. He worked at
Consolidated Manufacturing in maintenance.&nbsp;
He also worked for Stutzman’s Greenhouse.&nbsp; Theo has many interests and talents.&nbsp; He was an avid motorcyclist and played the
drums at McGee Chapel Church of God in Christ in Hutchinson where he was a
member.&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Theo was preceded in death by his father; a maternal
grandmother, Lou Brown; one aunt, Neva Lewis, and one uncle, Cedrick Jackson.

He is survived by his mother, Claudia Hawthorne; three
daughters, Tameila Johnson, Giselle Johnson and Karlee Caudill; one son,
Theoplis Johnson III; two grandchildren, Yasmene Carter and London Vassell; one
aunt, Shirley Owens; and two uncles, Charles Johnson and Donald Jackson. 

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m.,
Saturday, May 21, 2022 at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel &amp; Crematory,
Hutchinson, with Reverend William Green officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 20,

Army.&nbsp; He served in the Korean War and
was honorably discharged on April 22, 1955.&nbsp;
Earnest married Shirley Nickels on June 24, 1967 in Nowata, OK. She
passed away in 2016.&nbsp; Earnest was a longtime resident of Pretty
Prairie.&nbsp; He worked for Ford as a farm tractor mechanic and retired after
36 years.

Earnest was preceded
in death by his parents; wife, Shirley; two sisters, Norma Jean Scott and Joyce
Elliot; and two brothers, Don Sterling and Richard Sterling. 
He is survived by his children; Shawn Sterling, Arlington, Jody Harris,
Emporia, Rodney Sterling, Hutchinson, Todd Sterling (Meghann), Hutchinson, his
sister, Jan (Rick) Jensen; six grandchildren, Amber (Kris) Kohlhoff, Justin

Warren Robert Schmitt, age 101, passed away on April 9, 2022, at Pleasant Hills in Hutchinson. He was born on March 18, 1921 in Hutchinson to Albert and Elsie (Benscheidt) Schmitt. He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1939 and from Hutchinson Junior College in 1941. He also attended the University of Kansas and Carnegie Tech in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.

Warren enlisted in the Army following the attack on Pearl Harbor and served as a Sargeant in the 285th&nbsp;Field Observation Battalion. He landed at Utah beach two weeks after D-Day and served in a forward observation unit during the Battle of the Bulge. He was one of the few survivors of the Malmedy Massacre, in Belgium on December 17th, 1944, and later provided eyewitness testimony in the Nuremberg war crime trials.

He and Phyllis J. Rostine were married on June 22, 1946, at the First Presbyterian Church in Hutchinson and they shared 61 years together before her death in 2008, They had four children, all currently living in Hutchinson: Linda Schmitt (Brian Lingle), Kyle Philbeck (Tom), Lisa Barker (Stan), and Phil Schmitt (Cindy).

After returning from the war, Warren joined his family’s business, Western Foods. In 1954, he left to start his own homebuilding business, Warren Schmitt Construction Company.&nbsp; It evolved to become Warren Schmitt Realty and Construction in 1962 and Warren Schmitt Century 21 in 1979. Over the course of his career, he built close to 400 homes and commercial buildings in the greater Hutchinson area, designing many of them himself. The additions that he developed include: Prairie Village, Northglenn, and Kisiwa Creek. Warren was a founding member and president of the Hutchinson Homebuilders Association and was president of the Kansas State Homebuilder’s Association. He also served as president of the Hutchinson Board of Realtors and served on the Hutchinson Planning Commission.

Warren had many interests and hobbies. He was an accomplished wood carver and enjoyed building and flying radio controlled model planes with the Hutch Bunch RC Club. He was an early member and chief cook of the Ninnescah Recreation and Hunting Club.&nbsp; In retirement, he enjoyed being a docent at the Cosmosphere and was part of the Liberty Bell 7 restoration team. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

He was known for his eternal optimism and positive approach to life that he kept until his last day. His greatest joy was his family.

Warren is survived by his children and 9 grandchildren: Nate Schmidt (Jennifer) Birmingham, AL; Evan Schmidt (Patrick Huber) Davis, CA; Mike Schmidt (Abigail Chin) Arlington, MA; Christopher Philbeck (Sarah) Atlanta, GA; Dan Barker (Nicole) Lenexa; Ross Barker (Chelsea) Olathe, KS; Brett Barker (Abby) Olathe; Alex Schmitt, Wichita; Zach Schmitt, Kansas City, MO, and 15 great-grandchildren.

Warren was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Phyllis in 2008, brother Gene who died in Belgium in the Battle of the Bulge, infant son Michael, and granddaughter Brooke Barker.

Warren will be buried with his wife, and granddaughter, Brooke in a private inurnment at Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson, with military honors conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.

A celebration of his life will be held
in the Sky Lab room at the Cosmosphere at 1100 North Plum St. from 12:00 to
3:00 on Saturday, May 21, 2022.

Warren R. Schmitt  |1921-2022|

Martha Krueger, 93, died May 6, 2022, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.

She was born on July 11, 1928, in Newton, the daughter of John and Cecelia (Newbold) Stamm.

On December 7, 1947, Martha was united in marriage to Paul Calvin Krueger. They were married for 55 years at the time of his passing in 2002.

For many years Martha worked at Southwestern Bell / ATT&amp;T, where her friendly demeanor and hard work earned her the nickname of “mighty mouse”.

Martha was a kind, loving and caring person. She loved animals (especially dachshunds) and enjoyed spending time volunteering at Caring Hands Humane Society.

With a passion for cooking, Martha was always happy to read and add a new cookbook to her collection. Her favorite thing to make was her famous “Martha’s Mashed Potatoes”.

Martha is survived by her daughter, Pam McKellip; many extended family. &nbsp;She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Krueger; parents, John and Cecelia Stamm; and brothers, Sanford, Chester, and James Stamm.

A visitation will be from 1 pm to 5 pm on Sunday, May 15th, 2022, at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. A private family burial will then take place at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton

Martha Krueger, 93, died May 6, 2022, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.She was born on July 11, 1928, in Newton, the daughter of John and Cecelia (Newbold) Stamm.On December 7, 1947, Martha was united in marriage to Paul Calvin Krueger. They were married for 55 years at the time of his passing in 2002.For many years Martha worked at Southwestern Bell / ATT&amp;T, where her friendly demeanor and hard work earned her the nickname of “mighty mouse”.Martha was a kind, loving and caring person. She loved animals (especially dachshunds) and enjoyed spending time volunteering at Caring Hands Humane Society.With a passion for cooking, Martha was always happy to read and add a new cookbook to her collection. Her favorite thing to make was her famous “Martha’s Mashed Potatoes”.Martha is survived by her daughter, Pam McKellip; many extended family. &nbsp;She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Krueger; parents, John and Cecelia Stamm; and brothers, Sanford, Chester, and James Stamm.A visitation will be from 1 pm to 5 pm on Sunday, May 15th, 2022, at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. Kade graduated from Macksville High School in 2009. He graduated from Kansas State University with a construction science degree. On Sept. 20, 2014 he married Megan (Welch) at Belpre. Kade was a member of the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and was a Third Degree Knights of Columbus member at Council #2131, Kinsley.

Enedelia Riojas Guerrero, 64, of Ellinwood, passed away May 8, 2022, at Swedish Medical Center, Englewood, Colorado. She was born August 28, 1957, in Piedras Negras Coahuila, Mexico, the daughter of Miguel Riojas and Fidencia Moreno. 

Enedelia has resided in Ellinwood for many years, formerly of Chase,&nbsp; and Dublin, Texas. She was a homemaker. Enedelia was a member of the Nueva Esperanza Church of Great Bend. She enjoyed going to church, fishing, buying plants and gardening, and most of all spending time with her family. 

On July 7, 1978, Enedelia was united in marriage with Luis Antonio Guerrero. He preceded her in death on August 17, 2020. She is also preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Maria Sotelo Guerrero; sister, Yolanda Riojas; brother, Juan Ignacio Riojas; grandson, Jaden Guerrero; and a granddaughter, Chassidy Guerrero.

Victor ‘Vic’ C. Volker, 86, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2022, at his daughter’s home, surrounded by family.&nbsp; He was born June 22, 1935, in Zenith, KS, to Roy ‘Cotton’ Clyde and Velma Ruth (Fee) Volker.

Vic was a graduate of Stafford High School, Stafford, KS. According to Vic, he was the ‘bus driver’.&nbsp; He drove a horse drawn wagon and gave his siblings and neighbors a ride to and from school every day.&nbsp; While Vic didn’t mind that job, his true passion was sports and hunting.&nbsp; He was quite the all-around athlete, but the basketball court and softball diamonds were where his heart truly was.&nbsp; The way Vic’s eyes lit up as he told stories about either sport, spoke volumes of his love for the game.&nbsp; He went from being an athlete, to watching his children, then grandchildren from the stands, loving that his competitive passion had been passed down the line to share. Vic also shared his love of hunting.&nbsp; Each child and grandson can fondly look back on happy memories of cutting school and spending it in the freezing cold with smiles on their faces as they hunted with him.&nbsp;

Vic was a hard worker.&nbsp; His years inspecting and auditing grain brought him much joy and fulfillment.&nbsp; Vic loved to drive around and look at the crops. He enjoyed camping with friends, playing cards, and&nbsp;was a pretty amazing bowler.&nbsp; Vic’s infectious smile reflected the person that he was, and drew people to him, both young and old.&nbsp; His impact on young people, even in his last days was incredible.&nbsp; Vic was a kind man that would give the shirt off his back to help another.&nbsp; He loved Jesus and was ready to be with Him in heaven.&nbsp; Vic’s love for Jesus was evident in the way that he lived and cared for others.

On October 15, 1963, he married Mary Louise Smith, in Hutchinson, KS. They shared over 53 years of marriage, prior to her death on September 2, 2017.
