George F. Hildebrant, 96, died August 2, 2022, at his home. He was born January 7, 1926, in Hutchinson, to Frank D. and Elsie (Kearns) Hildebrant.

George graduated from Hutchinson High School and attended Hutchinson Community College. He served in the United States Army from 1944–1946, serving in the European theater. George was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he sustained in combat. He worked as a salesman for Earl Brown Wholesale and retired as manager for Namee. In his younger days, George played semi-pro baseball. He loved helping with harvest on the Leonard farm. George joined First United Methodist Church on December 4, 1932, and was an active member of the church throughout his life. He was also a member of Hutchinson-Reno Masonic Lodge #124 A.F. &amp; A.M. and American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68.

On June 29, 1947, he married Sara “Madlyn” Creech, in Hutchinson. They shared 70 years of marriage before her death on September 24, 2017.

George is survived by: his daughters, Ronda Moyers (Roy) of Oklahoma City, OK; Debra Leonard (Earl) of Hutchinson; grandson, Eric Leonard (fiancé, Katlynn Queen); and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; infant granddaughter, Haley Nichole Leonard; sister, Marguerite Cook; and brother, Bill Francis.

Graveside service will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5905 W. 4th&nbsp;Ave., with military honors conducted by the United States Army Honor Guard.

Friends may sign his memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

Mary Margaret Tharp, 79, of Herington was born October 3, 1942, in Trenton, MO to Lloyd Vanderpool and Mary (Mantlo) Vanderpool. Mary passed away on August 2, 2022, at the Herington Municipal Hospital with her daughter by her side.

Mary attended local schools in Trenton, which is where she met the love of her life Virgil Tharp. On March 3, 1959, Mary and Virgil married in Gallatin, MO. Mary then moved to Herington, following Virgil’s railroad job. Mary worked several places around Herington through the years from the Chamber of Commerce and the City of Herington. Her most favorite job was the years she spent as secretary for Herington High School. Her and Virgil owned and operated the Dairy Queen in Herington for 24 years. She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, First Baptist Church in Herington, attending Shriners Conventions with Virgil, and catering weddings in her spare time. In her later years Mary loved going on trips to the casino.&nbsp;&nbsp; Mary and Virgil loved dancing and are without a doubt dancing away with each other.

Mary is survived by her daughter; Kay Childress and husband Gary of Herington, brother William Vanderpool and wife Betty of Iowa, 2 grandson’s, 4 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. &nbsp;She is preceded in death by her parents Lloyd and Mary, her loving husband of 53 years Virgil, brothers; George, James, and Bob. Donald James Schroeder was born April 15, 1937 in Goessel, to John A Schroeder and Bertha (Frey) Schroeder.&nbsp; Don attended church as a young man with his parents and younger siblings.&nbsp; It was there, Don received Christ was baptized and joined the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church.&nbsp;

Don grew up on the family farm North &amp; West of Goessel.&nbsp; He enjoyed his daily chores of taking care of the animals and working on the farm.&nbsp; Country living stayed with him his entire life.&nbsp; Don graduated from Goessel high school.&nbsp; He took a job after high school with Hesston Corporation.&nbsp; There was a slight pause in his work career as a tool &amp; die maker when he went for 1W service at the General Rose Hospital in Denver, Colorado.&nbsp; After his service he returned to Hesston Corporation, little did he know then he would meet the young lady that would become his soul mate.

Don was married June 30, 1961 to Maris Jolene Schroeder at the Crystal Springs Mennonite Church.&nbsp; It was an extremely hot day in June, with no air conditioning in the church, but they didn’t care.&nbsp; The couple made their home at a farm they purchased in rural McPherson County.&nbsp; To this union two children came along, Stacey Jolene and Kerry James.&nbsp; Don &amp; Maris joined the Garden Church, Don spent many years as an usher.&nbsp; He most enjoyed the Bible being preached from the pulpit every Sunday.

Don worked at the factory by day, and raised crops, animals, kids, and family the other 16hrs a day.&nbsp; In the evenings he would read verses and help Stacey &amp; Kerry memorize them before bed.&nbsp; Psalms 23 was a favorite.

Family was very important and there were numerous summer vacations to, Colorado and Branson to get the family together for quality time.&nbsp; The best times were spent with the family.&nbsp; The grandkids, and great grandkids always brought a smile to his face and twinkle to his eye.

August 2, 2022 Don was called home to be with his Lord and Savior.

Don is survived by; a daughter, Stacey and husband Ronald Mumaw, of Hesston; a son Kerry and wife Donica, of Harper; a brother Bob and wife Gladys of Manhattan, 5 grandchildren, Michael Mumaw (Maria Foley), Cequinda Mead (Shelby Mead), Jeff Mumaw, Jason Schroeder (Olivia), Weston Schroeder, &amp; Kenton Schroeder (Katie) and 6 great grandkids; Abbigail, Aubrey, Adeline, Annabelle, Alex, &amp; Dean.

Don was preceded in death by his wife Maris, parents John &amp; Bertha, and his sisters Kathleen &amp; Carolyn.

Don will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.&nbsp; We praise God for his life and testimony.

Shirley Sue Wheatley, age 81, of Andover, was born in Yellville, Arkansas. She passed away at home and went to be with her heavenly Father on July 30, 2022, in Andover.

Daughter of the late Salitus Albert Keene and Lillian Viola Timm Keene, she was the third oldest of eleven&nbsp; children. Shirley’s life was being with her family and in her earlier years she loved her work. She worked early on in nursing and later on in the aircraft industry as an electrical mod tech. She loved gardening and most importantly being with her grand and great grand-children. Shirley knew her Lord and Savior and is living in eternity with Jesus today! She is preceding in death by her parents and five siblings.

She is survived by five siblings, and her daughters Marlenna (Bill) Berger of Wichita Falls, Tx; Melody Gard (Brad) of Blue Springs Mo; and Christina (Jeremy)&nbsp; Janzen of Newton; sons Tommy Wheatley (Joanna) of Wichita; Bradley Wheatley of Andover; and fourteen grand-children and nineteen great grand-children.

Roy Eugene Long, 81, of Windom, KS, passed away suddenly on Monday, August 1, 2022, at his home.&nbsp; Roy was born on February 16, 1941, to James and Myrtle (Griffith) Long in Hutchinson.

He retired from Johns Manville after 25 years in the maintenance department.

Roy married Bertha “Bert” L. (Hunley) Johnson on September 20, 1965.&nbsp;

He was a former member of the Windom Fire Department, Windom Lions Club, and the Windom City Council.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha “Bert”; daughters, Bobbie (Dick) Rawson of Marquette, and Robin Wilson of Windom; son, Russell Long of Windom; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, Kristen (Ryan) Leatherwood and their children, Clay and Kadee, of Wister, OK; and Jude (Zaina) Ebingha of Edmond, OK; Nicholas (Brittany) Rawson and their children, Harrison &amp; Quinten, of Lyons; Austin Wilson of Newton; Alissa (Olivier) Basabe of Miami, FL; step-granddaughter and three step-grandchildren, Gwen (Jeff) Klepper and their children, Lane, Ashtin, and Grant, of Ellinwood; sister, Janis Smyth of Hutchinson; brothers, Ronald (Jan) Long and Dean Long, all of Hutchinson; and several nieces and nephews.

Sharon Deming died at her Hutchinson home July 31, 2022, following a series of strokes that started in late February.

Sharon was a Registered Nurse who served residents as Director of Nursing and Quality Control at the Buhler Sunshine Home before retirement. She had previously worked at Wesley Towers, Hutchinson Hospital, USD 308/Hutchinson Public Schools and Johnson and Sons Funeral Home.

She was born October 27, 1944, to the late Dr. Marion E. and Dorothy (Purdy) Nunemaker. At an early age Sharon became responsible for helping with her family’s younger children because of her mother’s illness. It was a trait and practice she reflected throughout her life.

Sharon was preceded in death by: her parents; daughter, Wendy Cox; and grandson, Andrew Cox.

Survivors include: her children, Jill Leslie Muramatsu and Will Leslie, Shannon Guild, Rogers, AR; husband, Dan; sisters, Susan Blocker, Haven, Kathy Nunemaker, Boulder, CO, Mary Young, Wheat Ridge, CO; and a brother, Terry Nunemaker, Wellington.

Also mourning her loss are: much loved grandchildren, Kameko Muramatsu, Dallas, Lindsey Kilbride, Galva, Logan Rumsey, Rogers, AR; and other much loved grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Kansas and Arkansas.

Sharon was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and spent her lifetime helping support and encourage family members, friends and others she found in need. She was a former President of the Hutchinson League of Women Voters and active in programs and causes promoting women and animals. Sharon had volunteered for the Salvation Army, First Call for Help, Hutchinson Animal Shelter along with other activities aimed at benefiting those less fortunate and unable to fully care for themselves. Will Rogers said he never met a man he didn’t like. Sharon never met a cat she didn’t like with Barney and Sha-Moo among the loving survivors.

One of Sharon’s greatest sadness as her health declined was not being able to attend church and worship with others. But she maintained a close personal relationship with Jesus which, in the end, is more important. Life is full of ironies and among the biggest Sharon and her family faced is how seemingly unfair for a person who gave so much of her life assisting and comforting others needed the same help as her life came to a close. Those of us with faith must trust God’s plan even when we don’t understand and it makes no sense to us.

Special appreciation goes to Jennifer Buell, a veteran hospice aid, who has the ability to form close and meaningful relationships with her patients. Jen’s help, which developed into a memorable and lasting friendship, will never be forgotten and is emblematic of the type of care Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County provides daily. The family wants to thank and highly compliment the entire nursing and support staff for their exceptional and loving care. Special appreciation also goes to Jill, Will, Shannon, and Pastor Kim Biery, for helping with round-the-clock care as Sharon’s illness progressed.

Charles Frederick. Stinchcomb, Marion, died July 31, 2022 in Salina, Kansas at the age of 101. Born October 31, 1920 at home in Lincolnville to parents Frederick Charles and May Stinchcomb, he was one of the last Kansans to know a vast and wild prairie transitioning to a modern world. &nbsp; Growing up, he watched the Marion Lake dug by mules and dirt slips. He learned to play many musical instruments and performed in a band with his dad and grandpa at the Harvey Sampson garage, where he also learned to use a ham radio. When he was 21, he met the love of his life, Rosalene Higgins, at a picnic at the lake, and they were united in marriage October 8, 1943 in Lincolnville. The couple could not go on a honeymoon because of World War II gas and tire rations. &nbsp; He and Rosalene raised six children, first living on a farm south of Lincolnville, and later leaving after the Great Flood of 1951. He worked as a farmer, truck driver, gas station operator, oil field worker, driller, welder and ditch digger. On Saturday nights, the family gathered around the television to watch Lawrence Welk and the Ed Sullivan show. In the summer, they went to Herington to the drive-in movie. In 1967, the couple moved to a farm south of Marion and raised cattle and hogs. &nbsp; Later in life, Charles and Rosalene discovered new places in their camper, traveling through Texas, Oklahoma and Colorado. He knew what it was like to operate a 12-foot combine and then at the age of 93, cut wheat with his grandson on a 35-foot combine. He liked hotdog roasts, bike riding, ice-skating and sledding. He was a 65-year member of the Masonic Lodge. &nbsp; Charles is survived by his daughter Susanne Mueller (Richard), son Blaine Stinchcomb (Dora), daughters-in-law Barbara Stinchcomb (Charles L.) and Emma Stinchcomb (Michael) and son-in-law Ralph Janzen (Charlene). He had 17 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. He is proceeded in death by his wife Rosalene, sons Charles L., Michael and Robert, and daughter Charlene.&nbsp;

Trinidad ‘Juney’ Duarte, Jr., 71, of Hutchinson, died July 31, 2022, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born December 19, 1950, in Granada, CO, to Trinidad Avila and Ruth (Vargas) Duarte.

Juney graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1969. He joined the United States Navy right after graduation and served from 1969 to 1972. Juney retired from Eaton Corporation where he worked as a machinist for over 40 years. He was a family man who adored his grandchildren and loved spending time with his family and friends. If he was not home, you could find him at his daughter's house, the radiator shop, or another buddy’s house hanging out. Juney enjoyed fishing, watching football, basketball, golf, and other sports, and going to the movies. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose #982, Hutchinson.

He married Terry McMillen on May 17, 1985. They later divorced.

Juney is survived by: his children, Heather Duarte (Brett Buell) of Hutchinson, Trinidad “TJ” Duarte (Nikia Stone) of Salina; grandchildren, Brantley and Beckett of Hutchinson, Autumn, Colin, and Trinidad Jr. of Salina; siblings, Mary (Larry) Lingerfelt of Moorpark, CA; Bobby (Adela) Duarte of Denver, CO; Vera (Mike) Lackey of Topeka; Eleanor (Ron) Lawson of Wichita; Andy Duarte, Stevie Duarte, Billy (Shari) Duarte, and Peter Duarte, all of Hutchinson; Geralyn (Ralph) Espinoza of Wichita; and Gina (John) Glenn of Nickerson; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews.

He was a long time resident of Valley Center where he attended school and church with his family. As a young boy he enjoyed trips to the Grandmas' in Oklahoma to their farms.

At Valley Center High School he was part of Pop Choir and assisted with stage productions and worked part time at Dekalb wheat research farm. He graduated in 1977 with a scholarship to WSU. At WSU, Gary studied computer science. After finishing a semester at WSU, he enjoyed working back stage with the Valley Players Summer Theatre with a nickname of "Woody". He drove delivery trucks and worked warehouse for Wichita Frozen Foods with a nickname of "Giant". He stayed with the same basic wholesale food company as it was bought out by Cloverdale, F &amp; E Wholesale, and Ben E Keith Wholesale until he retired. After working night shifts, Gary remained a night owl. His hobbies were reading sci-fi books and watching movies and programming his computer. Gary also enjoyed playing cards with family and friends.

Gary is survived by his sister Linda Woodring, brother Reece Woodring, and sister Gale Nachtigal (Kelly); other family and friends.

Graveside Service at Resthaven Cemetery in Wichita, Kansas, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, August 8, 2022.&nbsp; A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11 a.m. at LifePoint Church in Valley Center, Kansas.

Clifford D. Kater, 90, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.

He was born to Otto and Ella Kater on July 27, 1932 in Newton.

Cliff worked as a supervisor of building and grounds for Junction City school district.&nbsp; He was an educator, owned a driving school and a custodial supply company.

You could often find Clifford enjoying a peaceful day of fishing or spending quality time with his beloved grandkids.

Clifford made a point to be thoughtful and kind to every person he met. He loved making people smile, even on his final day he was in good spirits and winning the affections of his nurses and those nearby.

Cliff is survived by his brother, Jack Kater of Sedgwick; son, Dale D. Kater of Phoenix, AZ; daughter, Tamlette V. Pouncil of Wichita; as well as six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Donna June Kater on July 8, 2022.

Dean attended Hutchinson High School and graduated from Hutchinson Community College.&nbsp; He retired after five years of service as a case manager at Horizons Mental Health Center.&nbsp; Dean could often be found outside fishing, barbequing and smoking meat, and tinkering.&nbsp;&nbsp; His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren.&nbsp; Dean was a member of Partridge Community Church.

On July 4, 1987, he married Janice (Stiggins) Landon, in Partridge.&nbsp; They recently celebrated 35 years of marriage.

Dean is survived by:&nbsp; his wife, Janice “Jan” Richardson of Partridge; bonus son, Terry Landon (Toni); grandchildren, Jessica Woodyard (Greg) and Turner Landon; great-grandchildren, Jovie Harrison, Jhett Woodyard, and Jagson Woodyard; sisters, Joann Engelhardt (Steve) and Ellen K. Morgan Rochelle Smalley was born December 28, 1990, in Kansas City.

She died unexpectedly July 28, 2022, at her parents’ home in Augusta.

Morgan grew up in Goddard, and Seattle, Washington. She loved reading and writing from her earliest years, producing and selling her own books for a time. Morgan graduated from Goddard High School in 2009 and subsequently earned her bachelor’s degree in Art History from the University of Kansas.

Most importantly she acquired an adventurous spirit leading to her world travels. Morgan worked as an English teacher in Hong Kong, witnessing the Chinese oppression and freedom protests there, and in Krakow, Poland, where her heart broke for the flood of Ukrainian war refugees she observed and assisted.

Her wanderlust lasted to the last of her days, including hopes to travel to South America to see Machu Pichu, to visit the Hermitage Art Museum of St. Petersburg, Russia, and observing Passover in Jerusalem.

Passionate and energetic in her convictions, Morgan graciously accepted divergent points of view and people from all walks of life.

Morgan was also passionate in her affections for her family and the far-flung flock of friends she collected around the world.

She is survived by her parents Jack and Annette Smalley, and her sister Megan of Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Grandparents Norman and Barbara Smalley, Harriet and Richard Nelson, aunt Marcy Smalley and aunt and uncle Marcy and Roger Clegg, survive to mourn her passing. Her maternal grandfather Keith Armstrong passed away in 1992.

Journal, Houston, TX.&nbsp; On December 21,
1995, Carolyn married Jimmy Hersman in Houston, TX.&nbsp; 
 
She is survived by her mother, Mary Lou; her husband, Jimmy; two children, Lisa
(Mike) Sallee of Smyrna, TN.&nbsp; and Eric L.
(Pippa Robertson Lambert) Hornbeck of Austin, TX.; three grandchildren, Treyton,

Wayne David Konkel, 90, passed away Saturday, July 30, 2022 at Grand Plains Skilled Nursing. He was born on May 9, 1932 in Haviland to Clarence Dale and Gertrude Ellen (Rice) Konkel. Wayne married Margaret Helen (Bragg) Konkel on March 25, 1960 in Guymon, Oklahoma. They were married for 62 years. Wayne attended Haviland High School. He worked for National Helium Corporation. He was a member of Church Of The Nazarene. He enjoyed collecting toasters and taking care of his vehicles. He is survived by his wife, Margaret and sister, Marthena DeGarmo of Nebraska. Wayne is preceded in death by his parents; son, Johnnie Wayne Konkel; sisters, Margaret Davis, Mabel Baker, Marcheta Monaghan and Joann Parker; brothers, Fay Konkel, Eddie Konkel, Frank Konkel and Johnny Konkel; and an infant brother and sister. Bonnie Kay Haile, 81, of Sterling, passed away July 30, 2022, at the Sterling Village, Sterling. She was born January 25, 1941, in Rice County, the daughter of Benjamin and Evelyn Mills Morley. 

Bonnie was a lifetime Rice County resident. She graduated from Sterling High School with the class of 1959. Bonnie was a housewife, secretary for Haile’s Dirt Construction in Sterling, and was a clerk for Lantz Clothing Store in Lyons. She was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Sterling, and was a board member at the Coronado Quivira Museum in Lyons. Bonnie enjoyed refinishing furniture in her spare time. 

On May 12, 1960, Bonnie was united in marriage with Guy “Fuzz” Haile in Sterling. He survives of the home. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Nellie Haile of Park City; sister-in-law, Doris Morley of PA; five grandchildren, Ashley Tanner and husband Jed, Erin Haile, Jeremiah Haile, Zechariah Haile, and Gracie Haile and fiancé Levi Maxson; two great-grandchildren; Delanie Ann Haile and Gavin Boele; nephew, Billy White; niece, Pamela Shaud and husband Kevin; and adopted daughter, Patty Wagerle and husband John of Sterling. Bonnie is preceded in death by her parents; grandmother, Elsie Mills; two sons, Phillip and Jerry Haile; brother, Leland Morley; and sister, Wynona White.

Gerald Julius “Jerry” Konen, 96, of Little River, passed away July 28, 2022, at Sandstone Heights Nursing Home, Little River. He was born June 21, 1926, in Piqua, the son of Bernard H. “Ben” and Julia J. (Ulrich) Konen. 

Jerry has resided in Little River since 1962, formerly of Hugoton and Piqua, Kansas. He served in the United States Army during World War II from December 11, 1944, until August 21, 1946. Jerry retired from Santa Fe Railroad as a depot agent telegrapher after 39 years of service. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Little River, where he served as sacristan, Eucharistic minister, church treasurer, PSR teacher, altar boy, and altar boy trainer. Jerry was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #7422 of Lyons, member of the Sandstone Heights building committee, and former mayor and judge of the City of Little River. 

On January 3, 1949, Jerry was united in marriage with Dorothy Westerman in Piqua. She survives of the home. He is also survived by his four sons, Michael Konen and wife Debbie of Little River; Mark Konen and wife Mary of Little River; Steven Konen and wife Kathy of Clearwater; and Gregory Konen and wife Carrie of Edmond, OK; three daughters, Julita Konen of Little River; Mary Ramage and husband Rex of Collinsville, OK; and Brenda Wright and husband Brian of Little River; thirty-one grandchildren; thirty-eight great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Jerry is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Konen; sister, Mary Frances Thummel; and great-granddaughter, Hazel Ramage.

Edwin L. Wiard, 90, died July 26, 2022, at Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.&nbsp; He was born July 10, 1932, at Greensburg, the son of Ralph and Laura Ellen Carithers Wiard.&nbsp;

A longtime Enid, Oklahoma, resident, previously of Pretty Prairie, Edwin was a life-time railroader beginning with the Santa Fe.&nbsp; He also railroaded with the Rock Island, MKT, OKT railroads and retired in 1993 with the Union Pacific Railroad.&nbsp; Upon retirement, he volunteered for the railroad museum in Enid.&nbsp;

On December 31, 1953, he married Carolyn McCubbin.&nbsp; She preceded him in death January 23, 2017.&nbsp; Edwin is survived by his sons Buck (Denise), Hutchinson, and Chad (Kristin), Broken Arrow; five grandchildren and their spouses Brett and Diana Wiard, Mindy and Justin Tankersley, Chelsea and Jeramy Pappas, Katrina and Vadim Narudsky and MacKenzie and Matt Thorne; twelve great-grandchildren; sister, Donna Stucky.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his wife, sister Evelyn Pettay and brother, Darwin Wiard.

Dudley Owen Burgess, 75, of Hutchinson, died July 26, 2022, at Hospice House in Hutchinson, after a long struggle with prostate cancer. He was born January 22, 1947, in Lacrosse, Wisconsin, to Lawrence Burgess and Dorothy (Ellis) Burgess.

Within days of his birth, his parents relocated to Topeka and eventually to Hutchinson, where he built the R-B Drive-In Restaurant located at A &amp; Poplar. Dudley spent his early childhood playing and fishing on the banks of the Cow Creek, located behind the restaurant. Fishing remained his only hobby for the rest of his life.

Dudley graduated from Hutchinson High School with the class of 1965.

In 1967, he married Karen Kay Poulton. To them one son was born, Darin Owen Burgess.

Dudley went to work as a salesman, working for several car dealerships in Hutchinson. After selling his first car within hours of being hired, the dealership manager stated that he was “a born salesman, who could sell ice cubes to an Eskimo”.

In the early 1980's Dudley attained his license to sell real estate, which led to him building and selling speculation homes. He led a full life, that always led back to fishing. Toward the end of his life he had special fishing buddies that assisted him in getting to the lakes. These friends were: Earl Barnes, Dick Swisher, Gary Vincent, and Larry Montandon. He really appreciated those buddies.

Dudley was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Bradley Burgess.

He is survived by: his wife, Karen, Hutchinson; son, Darin, South Hutchinson; sister, Pam Wheeler (Charles),Hutchinson; sisters-in-law, Nancy Lane and Sharon Sue Poulton, both of Hutchinson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Per Dudley's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services at this time. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

Paul Arthur Friesen, age 98, died May 30, 2022 at the Schowalter Villa in Hesston.&nbsp; He was born September 10, 1923 at Bethel Deaconess Hospital in Newton; the 9th child and 5th son of Peter Abram Friesen and the first child of the union of Peter Abram Friesen and Florence Cooprider Friesen.&nbsp; 

He was preceded in death by his wife Wilma Wenger Friesen and by 4 half sisters, 4 half brothers, one sister, a son in law Stanley Roth, and daughters in law Jane Friesen and Kathleen Friesen.&nbsp; Survivors include his children;&nbsp; Kelvin Friesen (Karen) of Archbold, OH; Janice Roth West (Tom) of Wichita; Eric (Wanda) of Cimarron; Gregg (Joanna) of Newton; Jon (Kristeen) of North Newton; Jennifer LeFevre (Dennis) of Woodland Park, CO, along with 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.&nbsp;

At age 3 months Paul traveled with his family by ship from New York to Bombay, India and from there by train to Central India where his parents served as missionaries with the Mennonite Church; his mother a physician and his father an evangelist.&nbsp; His early years were spent playing with his younger sister (Grace) and children from the village of Sankra in the Central Provinces where the family lived.&nbsp; At age 5 he began school in Landoor (U.P India) at Woodstock School in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains.&nbsp; He recalled being capable of speaking in English, Hindi (including the local Chitisgarri dialect from where he grew up), and Urdu.&nbsp; While he initially dreaded boarding school, it was that setting that gave him a peer group with diverse interests and, up to his death, he retained a fondness for the school and its mountainous setting. &nbsp; In the early 30’s the family returned to the states for two years with one year in Iowa and one in Chicago.&nbsp; In the end, the return to India was a welcome relief. &nbsp; His time in India left Paul with a bounty of stories of snakes, leopards, tigers, and long travels by bike or train.&nbsp; It was not unusual for him to bike 30 to 40 miles on dusty roads to visit friends, hike in the mountains, or to swim in the headwaters of the Ganges.&nbsp; It was perhaps that setting and those experiences that led him to develop an ability to delight others with stories that held the attention of his children and others.&nbsp; The family returned to the states in 1941.

Once back in the United States, Paul attended Hesston Academy and College where he met Wilma Wenger of Wellman, IA.&nbsp; They were married after he graduated from Goshen College where he completed a Bachelors of Theology degree.&nbsp; Together he and Wilma worked in church planting in Highway Village, IL and Sterling, IL where their first two children were born.&nbsp; A call from Hesston College led to a career change when the college recruited Paul to develop an art program for the college.&nbsp; That prompted further education and an eventual MFA from Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; His teaching career included work at both Bethel and Hesston Colleges where he focused on ceramics and sculpture.&nbsp; He continued to preach and through his life worked in various roles within the church.&nbsp; His sermons were remembered as much for their stories as for their theological content. &nbsp; Paul saw himself first as a pastor and his art work often embodied elements of his faith. Following retirement Paul worked in his studio doing ceramics and working with both wood and stone to create works of art.&nbsp; His final commissioned sculpture piece was completed in his 97th year and his final work of ceramics, a burial urn for a close college friend, at age 98.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In addition to his family, Paul’s passions included teaching, gardening, a love of Indian food, and travel.&nbsp; With his family of six children he and Wilma camped from Idaho to Virginia.&nbsp; He instilled in his children a cooperative and congenial sense of family that continues to this day.&nbsp; Paul was passionate about life.&nbsp; While his legacy includes a wealth of art work, both publicly and privately held, his greatest legacy lives in the lives of his family and in the students he taught and mentored over a long and productive life.&nbsp; This world, it can be said, is a better place because of him.&nbsp; Interment will be at Eastlawn Cemetery in rural Harvey County.&nbsp; Services at the Hesston Mennonite Church will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 30, 2022.&nbsp;

Paul Arthur Friesen, age 98, died May 30, 2022 at the Schowalter Villa in Hesston.&nbsp; He was born September 10, 1923 at Bethel Deaconess Hospital in Newton; the 9th child and 5th son of Peter Abram Friesen and the first child of the union of Peter Abram Friesen and Florence Cooprider Friesen.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his wife Wilma Wenger Friesen and by 4 half sisters, 4 half brothers, one sister, a son in law Stanley Roth, and daughters in law Jane Friesen and Kathleen Friesen.&nbsp; Survivors include his children;&nbsp; Kelvin Friesen (Karen) of Archbold, OH; Janice Roth West (Tom) of Wichita; Eric (Wanda) of Cimarron; Gregg (Joanna) of Newton; Jon (Kristeen) of North Newton; Jennifer LeFevre (Dennis) of Woodland Park, CO, along with 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.&nbsp;At age 3 months Paul traveled with his family by ship from New York to Bombay, India and from there by train to Central India where his parents served as missionaries with the Mennonite Church; his mother a physician and his father an evangelist.&nbsp; His early years were spent playing with his younger sister (Grace) and children from the village of Sankra in the Central Provinces where the family lived.&nbsp; At age 5 he began school in Landoor (U.P India) at Woodstock School in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains.&nbsp; He recalled being capable of speaking in English, Hindi (including the local Chitisgarri dialect from where he grew up), and Urdu.&nbsp; While he initially dreaded boarding school, it was that setting that gave him a peer group with diverse interests and, up to his death, he retained a fondness for the school and its mountainous setting. &nbsp; In the early 30’s the family returned to the states for two years with one year in Iowa and one in Chicago.&nbsp; In the end, the return to India was a welcome relief. &nbsp; His time in India left Paul with a bounty of stories of snakes, leopards, tigers, and long travels by bike or train.&nbsp; It was not unusual for him to bike 30 to 40 miles on dusty roads to visit friends, hike in the mountains, or to swim in the headwaters of the Ganges.&nbsp; It was perhaps that setting and those experiences that led him to develop an ability to delight others with stories that held the attention of his children and others.&nbsp; The family returned to the states in 1941.Once back in the United States, Paul attended Hesston Academy and College where he met Wilma Wenger of Wellman, IA.&nbsp; They were married after he graduated from Goshen College where he completed a Bachelors of Theology degree.&nbsp; Together he and Wilma worked in church planting in Highway Village, IL and Sterling, IL where their first two children were born.&nbsp; A call from Hesston College led to a career change when the college recruited Paul to develop an art program for the college.&nbsp; That prompted further education and an eventual MFA from Fort Hays State University.&nbsp; His teaching career included work at both Bethel and Hesston Colleges where he focused on ceramics and sculpture.&nbsp; He continued to preach and through his life worked in various roles within the church.&nbsp; His sermons were remembered as much for their stories as for their theological content. &nbsp; Paul saw himself first as a pastor and his art work often embodied elements of his faith. Dorothy Ann Gregory, 93, of Buhler, passed away on July 29, 2022. She was born July 15, 1929 in Stapp, Oklahoma, the daughter of Rosser A. and Jettie I. (Wood) Scott.

Dorothy graduated from Broken Arrow (Oklahoma) High School with the class of 1946. In 1950, she graduated from Northeastern State College, Tahlequah, OK with a bachelor’s degree in Business Education.

She was a member of the Buhler Mennonite Brethren Church and a past member of the Evening Star Quilt Guild in Hutchinson.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Marcus Leon Gregory on November 22, 1950 in Cleveland, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on February 2, 2009.

Dorothy taught school in Oklahoma and also at Daisy School near Yoder, in the early 1950s. She and Leon founded Gregory, Incorporated in 1956, where she worked as a bookkeeper and accountant for 64 years. She enjoyed sewing and quilting, organic gardening, reading, and cooking and she gave generously of her time, talents, and treasure to her church, family, and numerous charitable organizations.

She is survived by her sons: Timothy Gregory and wife Donna of Nixa, MO; Jonathan Gregory of Lincoln, NE; and David Gregory and wife Beth of Cornelius, NC; a daughter, Sarah Kuykendall and husband Todd of Enid, OK; daughter-in-law, Valerie Gregory of Buhler; eight granddaughters: Leah Yoder and husband Greg of Burbank, CA; Lindsay Butler and husband David of Scarborough, ME; Claire Bowling and husband Jacob of St. Louis, MO; Andrea Gregory of St. Louis, MO; Joanna Gregory of Springfield, MO; Abigail Gregory of Cornelius, NC; Grace Gregory of Greenville, SC; and McKayla Bishop and husband Payton of Piedmont, OK; four grandsons, Andrew Gregory of Hutchinson; Aaron Gregory and wife Morgan of Springfield, MO; Jedidiah Gregory of Charlotte, NC; and Christopher Kuykendall and wife Morgan of Cashion, OK; twelve great-grandchildren: Gavriel and Lily Yoder; Vienna, Oliver, and Cora Butler; Asher and Aiden Gregory; Ella, Everett, Ezra, and Eli Kuykendall; and Max Bishop; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Marcus L. (Mark) Gregory; brother, Paul Scott; and sister, Ella Jane Dozier.

Viewing and burial will be held at Buhler East Cemetery at 9:45am, August 5. Memorial service will follow at 11:00am at Buhler MB Church, followed by a luncheon. Family will greet friends at a viewing at Buhler Mortuary from 6:00-8:00pm on Thursday, August 4.&nbsp;

Wayne Roger Neufeld, 70, of Buhler, KS, went home to be with Jesus on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at the Hospice House in Hutchinson, Kansas after a courageous fight with Cancer and Parkinson’s Disease.

He was born September 19, 1951 in Hutchinson, KS the son of Wilbur John Neufeld and Rachel Ann (Esau) Neufeld. He grew up in Buhler, KS, graduating from Buhler High School with the class of 1969. Wayne attended Emporia State Teacher’s College (Music Education) and Hutchinson Community College (Associate Degree in Business Management).

While attending college in Emporia he met his future wife, Pamela. On July 3, 1971, Wayne was united in marriage to Pamela J. Cezar of Dwight, KS. They shared 51 years of loving marriage.

Wayne worked for Jackson Ice Cream for 31 years beginning as a truck driver and working his way up to management. He then worked for Peel’s Beauty Supply and Reno County Education Cooperative (Buhler Schools).

Wayne enjoyed reading, singing, playing golf, spending time with his family. He was undefeated in the family games of Trivial Pursuit and Scrabble. He was a faithful Christian and spent many years as a youth Bible school leader.

Wayne was preceded in death by his father, Wilbur Neufeld; mother, Rachel (Esau) Neufeld; and sister, Jane Neufeld.

He is survived by his loving wife, Pamela Neufeld (Buhler, KS); son, Kelly Neufeld and wife Stacy (Baldwin City, KS); son, Corey Neufeld and wife Michelle (Manhattan, KS); daughter, Kasey Noggle and husband Monty (Inman, KS); grandchildren, Madeline Neufeld (Baldwin City,KS), Karly Neufeld (Baldwin City, KS), Chloe Neufeld (Baldwin City, KS), Alissa Torres and husband Leo (Manhattan, KS), Kelsey Neufeld (Oklahoma City, OK), Kolby Noggle (Inman, KS), Karter Noggle (Inman, KS), Kamilyn Noggle (Inman, KS); sister, Lindy Hildebrandt (Hutchinson KS); and father-in-Law, William “Doc” Cezar (Dwight, KS).

Wayne will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his family.
