Penny Lee Wilkinson, 64, passed away Sunday, November 6, 2022 at Wheatland Health Care Center. She was born on December 19, 1957 in Pratt to Merlin Lavon and Norma Louise (Noble) Parker. Penny married Brad Wilkinson in May of 1975 at Pratt Free Methodist Church. They later divorced. Penny graduated from Pratt High School in 1975. She worked as a rural postal carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 38 years. She was a member of BPOE Elks Lodge #1451, VFW and American Legion. She enjoyed horses, dogs, cats, UTV's, 4-Wheeling, attending Chiefs and K-State football games, traveling, rodeoing, bonfires, social gatherings and having a toddy or a cold beer. She loved spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Natasha Wilkinson of Kingman; inherited daughter, Leslie (fiance', Rick Harrison) Cherry of Kingman; inherited sons, Wes (Amy) Cherry and family and Austin (Tracy) Caruthers and family all of Williston, North Dakota; sister, Jill (Jerry) Stone of Council Bluffs, Iowa; nephews, Joel Stone of Olathe and Chris Parker of Scappoose, Oregon; niece, Jenni (Craig) Hansen of Council Bluffs, Iowa; great-nephews, Dane Hansen and Drew Hansen both of Dallas, Texas; inherited grandchildren, Dalton Leis and Destiny Leis both of Kingman. Donald Lee Schmidt, 86, of Newton, died Wednesday from complications of pancreatic cancer at Kidron Bethel Village. Don was born at home to David and Kathryn Schmidt who farmed on hilly ground outside of Medford, OK during the Great Depression . Despite the challenging times, and despite living initially without electricity, Don and his younger brother, Lewis, grew up surrounded by love. The family found pleasure in card games, and, after electricity arrived at their home, radio shows like “GangBusters.” 

In 1948, the Schmidts moved to Newton, where Don attended First Mennonite Church and where, eventually, he graduated from Newton High School. In 1956, Don began dating the love of his life, Marlene (Kopper). They married four years later after Don graduated from Bethel College and afterward he performed 1-W service at Indiana University in lieu of being drafted into the military. In the 1960s, after jobs managing Antrim Lumber and Selling Fertilizer in York, Nebraska, he was hired as an accountant at Hesston Corporation (now AGCO), where he would spend his entire career, weathering a number of mergers and acquisitions and eventually advancing to the position of corporate controller before retiring in 2001. 

As much as Don thrived in his career, his life was defined by his faith in God, his commitment to serving his church community, and his love for his wife and the three children they raised: Mike, Greg, and Lori. Don served in a number of positions at First Mennonite, including as a deacon and congregational leader, and held positions on several boards, including at Kidron Bethel and Ten Thousand Villages. The quintessential Jack of all trades, Don not only tackled a number of projects, but also built the family’s second home with his father. A passion for golf and antique cars occupied his spare time. Whether attending Mike’s football games or Lori’s music recitals or helping Greg with various projects, Don was devoted to their well-being and encouraged them to pursue their passions. With Marlene, he enjoyed a lifelong marriage marked by many family vacations, concerts, dining out, and time spent with friends and family. 

Don was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Elda (Fast), and wife Marlene. He is survived by his children Mike, Greg And Lori, his brother, Lewis Schmidt (Dorothy), his uncle, A.D. Janzen, and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Donald L. Schmidt Memorial Fund and left with Petersen Funeral Home.

Charles Arthur Dudley Jr. was our beloved husband, father, brother, and friend. He passed away peacefully at the age of 74 on October 31, 2022.

He was born in Pittsburgh, Kansas on August 26th, 1948 to parents Charles A. Sr. and Dorothy Dudley. He was raised in Sedgwick, Kansas along side his 3 sisters, Donna Kaye, Debbie, and Delinda.

In 1969, Charles met his wife Donna working together at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He received his B.A. from Wichita State University shortly thereafter. His two children, Jeni and Jacob, were born at Wesley Medical Center.

Charles went on to achieve his MBA from the University of Dayton, Ohio. He had a successful 40 year career in healthcare retiring as the Administrative Director of the Children’s Hospital laboratory in Columbus, Ohio.

Charles created everlasting memories sailing and bowling with his wife, Donna. He once got a hole in one of the golf course! He had a passion for aviation and aircraft and, in 1973, was proud to get his private pilot’s license flying Cessna airplanes. When computers first emerged, Charles was first on the scene ordering and assembling a Sinclair computer through mail order. He shared a love for outer space watching Star Trek with his daughter, Jeni. He even attempted to paint like Bob Ross and paved the way for his son, Jacob, to become a talented artist. To his friends, he was known as a consummate gentleman.

Charles is preceded in death by Charles A. Sr. and Dorothy Dudley.

He is survived by his wife Donna Dudley, daughter Jeni Dudley, son Jacob Dudley, sisters Donna Kaye Motl, Debbie Hanson(Stuart), and Delinda Freeman(Mike).

Charles will rest peacefully in Sedgwick, Kansas, the land he loved as a child.

Alice Marie Susie Magson, 85, passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2022.&nbsp; She was born at home in Colwich, to Aloysius Nicholas "Ollie" Gehlen and Mary Elizabeth (Bayer) Gehlen.&nbsp; She lived in the Colwich and Mount Hope, area most of her life with a few years on the family farm in Elsmore. She remembers receiving a trophy for being the fastest runner in Seventh grade. In high school she attended for 3 years and then was a graduate of Elsmore High School. After graduation she received diplomas from Bryan Institute of Nursing, Social Services Designee and Career Academy of Nursing. Her family were lifetime members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Colwich. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella there also.

She enjoyed quilting, knitting, crocheting, embroidery and many other activities.&nbsp; She often made items for her family and friends.&nbsp; She had a great heart for others, yet her greatest love was her family and family activities.&nbsp;

She met and married the love of her life "Ted" Walter Edward Magson. He preceded her in death on June 17, 2011. Alice is also preceded by her parents Ollie and Mary Gehlen, brothers Elmer Gehlen and Vincent &amp; wife Betty Gehlen, sisters Theresa Born, Mary Doll and Clara Hart, niece Eileen Gehlen, nephews Stephen Born, Clarence Doll Jr and Lawrence Doll.

Alice is survived by her brothers Al Gehlen, Jerome Gehlen and Clarence Gehlen, all of Colwich, and sister Bernice Born of Eudora; many nieces and nephews, other family and friends.

Rosary will be held 9:30 a.m., with Mass at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 9, both at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Graveside will follow at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Colwich.

Caroline “Carol” Palacioz, 88, of Lyons, passed away November 1, 2022, at Grace Cottage, Wichita. She was born May 3, 1934, in Lyons, the daughter of John P. and Isidra Ramierez Barrientos. 

Carol was a lifelong Lyons resident. She graduated from Lyons High School with the class of 1957 and received her bachelor’s degree in social work from Sterling College in 1977. Carol was a housewife and ESL instructor and aide for Lyons School District USD #405 for many years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lyons and the Lyons VFW. Carol enjoyed cooking, reading, sewing, and educating people. She loved helping others, being around her grandchildren, and spending time with her family. 

In September of 1951, Carol was united in marriage with Felix Martinez Palacioz in McPherson. He preceded her in death on March 4, 2015. She is also preceded in death by her parents; son, Steven Palacioz; siblings, Frances Barrientos, Isabela Cadena, infant Elias Barrientos, Joe Barrientos, Bea Rau, infant Jaime Barrientos, and Betty Harkrader; and great-grandson, Chance Richards. 

Carol is survived by her daughter, Annalisa Richards and husband Ray of Lyons; brother, Louis Barrientos of Broomfield, CO; sister, Odelia Avila of Wichita; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jane Rosalie Brunsell, 77, of Lindsborg passed away Thursday, November 3, 2022 at Bethany Home of Lindsborg.  Jane was born January 10, 1945 in Lindsborg, to the late James W and the late Emeline (Rosander) Brunsell.  

Jane was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church, volunteering for the churches different organizations. She also sang in the Messiah Choir for many years.  Jane belonged to numerous genealogy and stamp collecting clubs. 

Jane graduated high school and secretarial school at Brown-Mackie College.  She worked for a while as a secretary and bookkeeper at various places.  She was also the longtime local rural mail carrier. Jane was one of the first registered EMTs in Lindsborg and volunteered with EMS until 2016.  She also held numerous odd jobs throughout the Lindsborg community.  She was the sexton and caretaker for Elmwood Cemetery in Lindsborg for many years.  She also did sexton work for Smoky Hill Cemetery and Rose Hill Cemetery.   

Survivors include her brother: Keith W. Brunsell (Joyce) of Lindsborg;  niece: Rachel McCullick (David) of Falun; nephew: Scott Brunsell (Alison) of McPherson; niece: Kelsey Brunsell (Nick Miller) of Canton.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents and beloved friend: Charlotte Ternstrom.

Cremation has been chosen.  The family will greet friends at visitation from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 8 at Crick-Christians Funeral Home, Lindsborg.

Gretta spent 10 memorable years living in Germany and traveling through much of Europe before returning to the States where she taught school in Oklahoma, and later edited medical research papers at the University of Texas Research Center until her retirement, moving to Lindsborg, Kansas in 2003.


Gretta is remembered by her surviving cousins and friends as a spirited woman with unmatched musical talent, intelligence, and a great sense for beauty.

Joan Irene (Stucky) Goering, 70, of Inman, passed away November 5th at Pleasant View Home after a battle with cancer.

Joan was born August of 1952 in Newton to Winton and Irene Stucky. She grew up behind the counter of her family's grocery business in the Hesston and Moundridge communities. She graduated from Moundridge High School in 1970 where she met her high school sweetheart Russell Goering.&nbsp;

In August of 1971, Joan was united in marriage to Russell in Moundridge. They resided in Manhattan, Lost Springs and Newton prior to moving to Inman in 1980. In 1989 they adopted their son Drew and in 1994 their daughter Mikayla, both from Guatemala. In 2022, Joan and Russ celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with their family.

Joan had a front row seat to countless sporting events as a coach’s wife. She would be in the stands cheering on the teams both at Centre High School for five years and for over 40 years at Inman High School. She also spent time working as the IHS Secretary when Russ and her first moved to Inman.

She was grateful to work with many farmers and insurance agents across South Central Kansas during her career in crop insurance. Her most treasured job was being a mother. She always had the right words to say, enjoyed celebrating the Christmas season and instilled a strong faith within her family.&nbsp; She was a member of Grace Bible Church in Hutchinson and was a former member of Bethel Mennonite Church in Inman.

Joan leaves to mourn her husband Russ, Inman; children: Drew, Lincoln, Nebraska and Mikayla, Manhattan; brothers: Scott Stucky (Min-Wei) Phoenix, Arizona, and Randy Stucky (Rita), Halstead; fraternal nieces: Chien-Chien Jaques (Paul), Beltsville, Maryland and Chee-Chee Gossage (Clint), Scottsdale, Arizona, and many relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents, and other close aunts and uncles.

Joan had a difficult fight with cancer yet she held a positive attitude during that time. Even though she struggled she continued to think of others before herself. The family wants to acknowledge and thank the care team members of: Traditions Health, Pleasant View Home, The Cancer Center of Kansas, Partners in Family Care, Dr. James Ratzloff, and Dr. Seth Page.

While Joan’s smile, caring nature and genuine friendship will be missed, we know she is pain-free enjoying her mansion in the sky.

Robert (Bob) Frederick Selm was born on February 19, 1952 to Robert and Rowena (Brown) Selm in Aberdeen, Maryland. &nbsp;

Bob, known to many childhood friends as Squab, spent most of his life in Salina growing up with his siblings, Rosalie, Linda, and Mike, being pulled through snow by their beloved Huskies and avoiding “groads” at all cost. Bob took part in many mischievous acts such as Ding Dong Ditch, jumping out of trees to frighten trick-or treaters (who may or may not have then dropped their candy), and misappropriating funds for Tasty Freeze and M&amp;Ms.

Bob attended school at Salina High School and then the University of Kansas where he donned his spandex and flexed his pecs performing the Iron Cross. He returned to Salina and began a career at Westinghouse Electric (later Philips Lighting) where he spent the next 33 years and formed lifelong friendships.

Some of his best times were spent on motorcycle trips with Tony, Mark and Ed and included adventures to California where they got their money’s worth on All-You-Can-Eat-Shrimp, a sensational deal on fuel, and enjoyed the stunning peaks of Black’s Beach. He enjoyed storytelling and perpetrating the illusion of Mr. Wizard with his siblings.

Bob met Becky Vogelman in 1978 when she moved into his apartment building. He was a man who knew what he wanted, and wasn’t renowned for his patience. His mischievous nature reappeared as he employed various methods of outfoxing the competition. The two were married at the Candlelight Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas on August 1, 1982 and honeymooned in San Diego among familiar landmarks. Bob introduced Becky to NFL football, travel and photography, three passions that endure to this day. They made a point to travel to Seahawks games, fell in love with Yellowstone during a driving trip to Seattle, and discovered the love of the ocean on a trip to the Cayman Islands. Bob’s mischievous nature rubbed off on Becky when she convinced him to get his SCUBA certification so that they could return to other island destinations.&nbsp;

Bob and Becky have two children, Michelle (Mika) Hutton nee Selm (Bunny Pie to Bob) and Ashley Haller nee Selm (Buggie to Bob). Bob’s award-winning parenting techniques included making spooky werewolf sounds outside their bedroom windows at night, fabricating names, facts, habitats and mating rituals of birds, and taking the children out to chase tornados. His Parent of the Year award has strangely not arrived yet. Bob instilled a love for SCUBA diving in both daughters, and Becky’s plan for island time worked beautifully.&nbsp;

Bob single handedly dictated their taste in music and television, including Heart, Queen, and Star Trek. Bob’s biggest influence on Mika is her love for all things astronomy. His greatest impact on Ashley came from the times they spent together doing fixity things that revealed her mechanical aptitude. Bob loved his family immensely.&nbsp; Bob faced health challenges throughout his life that would have taxed the most resilient among us but he refused to accept defeat and tinkered his way around obstacles. He was the king of modifying literally everything to accommodate his needs, whether it was creating personal electronic devices, modifying furniture for accessibility, or even engineering his own medical equipment, often with a sense of warped humor. His 3D printer never stopped in spite of the challenges presented by Parkinson’s Disease. He loved his cats, his family, remote controls and the Starship Enterprise.&nbsp;

Bob passed away peacefully on October 31, 2022 surrounded by loved ones. He leaves behind his wife Becky Selm; daughters Michelle (Jon) Hutton of Aurora, Colorado and Ashley (Jason) Haller of Salina; grandchildren Emerson Hutton, Elora, Barrett and Bowen Haller; siblings Linda (Roy) Partridge, Foristell, MO and Mike (Amy) Selm, Topeka. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert P and Rowena Selm and his sister Rosalie (Roger) Pace.

A gathering for family and friends is planned for spring of 2023 at Rocky Mountain National Park to celebrate his life and love for the area where many happy memories were made.&nbsp;

Ann Aldrich Shuey Rudd, 83, passed away on October 31, 2022, at Hutchinson Health and Rehab, Hutchinson.

Ann was born July 22, 1939 in Berkeley, CA to Edward and Dorothy Shuey.&nbsp; She was raised in Orinda, CA. &nbsp;Ann graduated from Acalanes High School in Lafayette, CA and the University of California, Davis campus with a BA in Zoology.

She married James Rudd in 1963 and had four children.&nbsp; Jim died in 1997.

Ann is preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter, Rebecca Shannon.

She is survived by her four children, Tami Rudd of Halstead, KS, Edward Rudd of Panacea, FL, Heidi Botkin of Hutchinson, KS, and Jennifer Newman of Clearwater, FL; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sister, Wendy Gleason of Bowling Green, KY, and brother Ed Shuey, Jr. of Las Vegas, NV.

Margaret Jean Cabbage, 91, died November 5, 2022, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was born September 18, 1931, in Topeka, to Orlo Harry and Elva Gertrude (Street) Moore.

Margaret graduated from Topeka High School in 1949, and Washburn University in 1953, with her bachelor’s degree.&nbsp; While at Washburn, she was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. When her daughters were young, she was a fixture in helping with Girl Scouts, PTA, and at their schools. She continued to volunteer in elementary school classrooms through the years.&nbsp; In addition, Margaret was passionate about promoting and helping with programs for individuals with disabilities, volunteering countless hours at the Early Education Center. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter BL and Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson. Margaret was active in local and district United Methodist Women and instrumental in establishing Trinity Treasures.&nbsp; She enjoyed sewing, gardening, and reading.&nbsp; Above all, her number one priority was her family; Margaret was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.&nbsp;

On April 11, 1953, she married Elwin F. Cabbage, in Topeka.&nbsp; He died August 22, 2017, after they shared 64 years of marriage.&nbsp;

Margaret is survived by:&nbsp; her daughters, Janeal Cabbage of Olathe, Beth Horth (John) of Winston-Salem, NC, and Marcy McAfee of Shawnee; grandchildren, Jeremy Horth of Winston-Salem, NC, Joshua Horth of Tempe, AZ, and Meghan McAfee of Shawnee.&nbsp;

Melissa graduated from Hoisington High School in 1991. She then attended dental school through the American Red Cross at Carswell Air Force Base.&nbsp; Melissa worked as an account manager for the family business, AnswerLink of Kansas for over 20 years. In her spare time, Melissa enjoyed camping, riding four-wheelers, spending time at the river, and enjoyed reading.&nbsp; Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, friends, and dog, Lucy.&nbsp; Melissa was a devoted wife, daughter, mother, sister, aunt, and friend.&nbsp; She was a member of Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson.

On April 29, 1995, she married Patrick John Cowles, in Hutchinson.

Melissa Ann  (Stoss) Cowles  |1973-2022|  

Lawrence L. “Larry” Jordan, 87, died November 3, 2022, at Thorne Care Center. He was born December 21, 1934, in Winside, Nebraska, to Leo and Marion (Behmer) Jordan.

Larry graduated from high school in Carroll, Nebraska, in 1952. In 1954, he joined the United States Army and served for two years. Following the military, Larry earned his degree from the University of Nebraska. He worked in banking for 49 years in Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Larry worked for First National Bank in Hutchinson for 31 years before his retirement on February 19, 2005. He was a recognized collector of toy farm equipment and was featured in publications. Larry was a member of Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson.

On January 3, 1974, he married Jeane Woodall in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They shared 48 years together.

Larry is survived by: wife, Jeane Jordan, Hutchinson; daughters, Julie, Union Star, Missouri, Sheri, Olympia, Washington; granddaughter, Abby, Olympia Washington; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; and brothers, Richard and Robert Jordan.

Memorial service will be 11 am Thursday, November 10, 2022, at Church of the Holy Cross, with Father Will Stuever officiating. Burial will follow at a later date in Nebraska. Friends may sign the book from 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary.

He worked in banking for 49 years in Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Larry worked for First National Bank in Hutchinson for 31 years before his retirement on February 19, 2005. He was a recognized collector of toy farm equipment and was featured in publications. Larry was a member of Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson.On January 3, 1974, he married Jeane Woodall in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They shared 48 years together.Larry is survived by: wife, Jeane Jordan, Hutchinson; daughters, Julie, Union Star, Missouri, Sheri, Olympia, Washington; granddaughter, Abby, Olympia Washington; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.He was preceded in death by: his parents; and brothers, Richard and Robert Jordan.Memorial service will be 11 am Thursday, November 10, 2022, at Church of the Holy Cross, with Father Will Stuever officiating.  on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott 
City, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born on July 28, 1933, in Tribune, Kansas, the 
daughter of Charles Hugo and Mary Elizabeth Swilley Thon.&nbsp; A resident of
 Scott City, Kansas, since 1996 moving from Stillwell, Oklahoma, she was a
 retired Med Tech &amp; Nurse Aide at Park Lane Nursing Home and a Home 
Health Nurse.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas.&nbsp; 
Letha enjoyed music, playing the piano, singing in the church choir, 
teaching Sunday school and cooking and cleaning at the church.

In 1948, she married Bobby Lloyd Wishon in Lamar, Colorado.&nbsp; He passed away August 1, 2015, in Dodge City, Kansas.

Diane Branning 60 died October 30, 2022, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. She was Born August 11, 1962, in Wellington, to Darrell and Shirley (Bradt) Branning. On September 19th&nbsp;she celebrated 41 years with her life partner Patty Kreier.

She graduated from Wellington High School, Fort Hay State University with a degree in Psychology and minor in Business, and The University of Kansas with a master’s degree in Social Work.

Following College she worked at Prairie View, Youthville and Eldorado Correctional Facility. She loved working varying jobs and the people she worked with.

Diane was co-owner of The Station House Restaurant in Walton, Kansas, and Kansas Photobooths. She enjoyed photography, spending time with her family and friends and making people laugh and reading a good novel.

Diane is survived by her partner Patty; five sons Donald Brown (Elizabeth Furness); Walter (Amanda) Stagner; Chad Kreier-Branning; Tyler Kreier-Branning; TJ (Meagan) Branning and daughters Hollie Kreier-Branning and Ashley Kreier-Branning. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and four brothers; Darrell Branning Jr; Terry (Pam) Branning; Kenny (Lori) Branning and Ricky Branning and many nieces and nephews.

Miriam Hawthorne passed away in her San Antonion home, on Tuesday, 25 Oct 2022 just three days from her 97th birthday. &nbsp;Miriam Lee Smith Hawthorne, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Irving B. Smith was born 28 October 1925 in Hutchinson. 

She was a graduate of Vogue School of Design in Chicago and had been department manager for American Millinery Company in Chicago. Here she mastered her craft as millenarist. Miriam met her husband on a blind date and married Francis Earl Hawthorne of Akron, OH on 1 February 1948 at Pratt First Christian Church. &nbsp;They settled in Junction City where Earl was stationed at Fort Riley. The couple traveled twenty years for Air Force and retired in San Antonio, TX. Twenty years later, they retired for the final time from Air Force civil service. Miriam was a devoted wife, mother, and Christian. She was an active member, holding numerous officers’ positions, of various women’s clubs in San Antonio. Miriam was the happiest in preparing holiday dinners for her family, decorating her home, and completing sewing projects.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Earl Hawthorne, son Kirkwood Smith Hawthorne and son-in-law Ronald James Oliva.

Miriam is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Oliva of San Antonio, Texas; step-grandchildren, Roland Oliva and wife Lindy of Katy, Texas; Annie Oliva Rodriguez of Roseville, CA. The Hawthorne family thanks Ms. Gloria Saldana for her eighteen years of care to the family.

Gordon S. Fitz John, 98, of Wichita, Kansas passed away on Friday, October 28, 2022.&nbsp; He was born in Neosho, Missouri to James Franklin Fitz John and Gladys (Higganbotham) Fitz John. Having been raised in the Neosho area where she attended school and was a graduate of Neosho High School.&nbsp; Gordon served in the U.S. Army and was a WWII Veteran.&nbsp; He married the love of his life Imogene on September 15, 1946.&nbsp; He retired from Cessna Aircraft. After retirement with his mechancial gift he helped others by having a lawnmower business working and fixing lawnmowers.

He was preceded in death by his wife Wylma Imogene Fitz John, son Carol and daughter-in-law Jennifer, parents James and Gladys, brothers Ronald and Charles, sisters Miria Pound, Shirley Reding and Phyllis McClary.

Judy (Judith) Rae Stancer, 76, of Valley Center, KS, went to be with the Lord with family by her side on November 2nd, 2022. Judy was preceded in death by her Brother Douglas Griffin, Father Don Griffin, and Mother Jeanne Griffin. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 58 years James H. Stancer, and sons Don Stancer, Michael Stancer (Anita), and Lee Stancer (Gracee). She was blessed with four grandchildren (Riley, Ashlynn, Bradyn, Eli). She was well loved by her sisters Gwen Stith, Ann McKay (Michael), sister in laws JoAnn Seyb (John Seyb), Judy Kasper, and Sue Griffin (Doug). She cherished 10 nieces and nephews Deborah Walters, Deanna Bartonek, Darren Seyb, Noah McKay, Kate McKay, Bobby Griffin, Christina Kratky, Ronda Patrick, Randy Lauppe, and Donna Morgan, great nieces/nephews, cousins, and friends. Judy graduated from Wichita West High School where she met her husband Jim the very first day of high school. Jim and Judy were never separated from each other after that day. She later went on to earn her BA from Pittsburg State University and became a teacher in the Parsons, KS school district. She served her community by providing in home daycare for 43 years where she helped raise hundreds of children. Judy touched many lives through her kindness, faith, service, and love. Judy was very grounded in her faith. She served her church for 39 years (Life-point Church in Valley Center, KS), serving as a Sunday School Teacher and active member of the Church. Judy focused on teaching children about Christ, the value of community, and caring for one another. Judy was selfless and gave her time generously to all. She loving gave her advice and was always there to lean on. Most importantly, Judy was a loving wife and mother to her family. She was one of the most patient, loving, thoughtful people the world has ever known. Judy was loved by all who knew her, and she will be greatly missed… especially her laugh and sense of humor. Judy was very grounded in her faith. She served her church for 39 years (Life-point Church in Valley Center, KS), serving as a Sunday School Teacher and active member of the Church. Judy focused on teaching children about Christ, the value of community, and caring for one another. Judy was selfless and gave her time generously to all. She loving gave her advice and was always there to lean on. Most importantly, Judy was a loving wife and mother to her family. She was one of the most patient, loving, thoughtful people the world has ever known. Judy was loved by all who knew her, and she will be greatly missed… especially her laugh and sense of humor. Jack Hatchel, 84, of Haven, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at his home. He was born August 30, 1938 in Champaign County, Illinois, the son of Eddie Sylvin and Pearle (Bridges) Hatchel. He graduated from high school in Atwood, Illinois with the class of 1956. Jack worked for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline for 41 years as a controls technician. He retired in 1997. He was a lifelong member of the NRA (National Rifle Association). He was an avid KU fan, along with Chicago Bears and Cubs. He was united in marriage to Carol Jo Christian on February 6, 1959 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pesotum, Illinois. She survives after 63 years of marriage. Marlena Sue Powell was born March 15, 1948 in Hutchinson, KS to Paul and Vera Koontz. She graduated from Mt. Hope High School in 1966, just before Mt. Hope consolidated with Burrton. She was a member of Haven Baptist Church where she was active in choir, Sunday school teacher and Vacation Bible School. Her spiritual birthday was the summer of 1956 at age 8 when she accepted Christ as her Savior while attending Bible School in Edna, KS. Marlena worked a short time for USD 312 Haven School District serving as secretary at Yoder Grade School. Later in life she worked full time for Eby Construction Company as project manager assistant for 13 years. She did cash deposits for Dillards, which opened a door to transfer to Phoenix, AZ for four years. When she returned home to Kansas she became a property manager for 14 years with Weigand Omega Company. Throughout her life she enjoyed making crafts, gardening, tinkering around in the garage, and reading her Bible. Marlene’s happiest moments were spent sharing her testimony in song singing at various churches, senior facilities, and other community gatherings in and out of state. She had the privilege to attend the Stamps-Baxter School of Music in Nashville and appeared on television stations for the Nashville Revue Record Industry Showcase. She valued spending her time with her son, Cody teaching him to enjoy God’s creation and things she had learned from her years spent on the farm. Every year plans were made for a vacation filled with learning experiences and fun. Her most blessed adventure was an opportunity to see the Holy Land where she found it to be true that once a person experiences this trip they truly do not return the same spiritually, but rather you find your walk with God has deepened your desire to know Jesus Christ more. She delighted in giving more than receiving. She never recalled a time in her life where God ever let her down or failed to meet her needs in her darkest moments. Marlena is preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Vera Koontz. She is survived by her brother, Wesley and wife Vicki, Hutchinson, KS; son, Cody and wife Stacy, Santa Fe, TX; grandsons, Dalton and Ryan; many nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews. Margaret Louise (Ruby) Hein was born on June 16, 1926. She passed away on November 1st, 2022 at the age of 96. She was born the 5th child, to Walter and Wilhelmina (Remmers) Ruby, in Marion, Kansas. There were 8 children, all predeceased; Catherine Hein, Joe Ruby, Fred Ruby, Art Ruby, Annabelle Gaffney, Lucille Weyer, and Ralph Ruby. She went to a one room School (Pleasant Valley) for the first 8 years. The summer prior to high school, Margaret began working outside the home. She worked for several families, doing child care, cooking, cleaning, laundry and ironing. In those days, this was quite a chore because you had to fill the iron with kerosene and pump air into it, and it was very heavy.

Margaret attended Marion High School, graduating in 1944. During her high school years, she worked several jobs, including J. C. Penney Co., and then Seymore Packing Company, both in Marion. She worked here as a bookkeeper and was there 4 years. After this, she worked at the Tip Top Creamery in Hillsboro.

Margaret used to go to the Marion skating rink where she met Edward Ray Hein. Margaret grew up Catholic and Edward was Mennonite. This was an obstacle to deal with for both families, and after several years of dating and being very sure of their love for each other, they eventually married in the EUB Church in Marion, now Eastmoor United Methodist , on August 10, 1948. They became members and were very active in the church for nearly 73 years. She was a SS teacher and also taught Bible School for many years, and later served on the kitchen committee.

Margaret was active as a farm wife, working side by side with Ed. They did outside jobs to supplement the farm income in their early years. During this time, they started a family, and 3 children were born in just over 3 years; Karen, Janet, and Dean. She kept very busy on the farm, but was also active in EHU. As the girls entered college, Margaret took a job as a cook at Tabor, where she worked for about 10 years. She enjoyed this work and made many friends there. Everyone enjoyed Margaret’s cooking, from family and friends, to hired hands. She hosted many large family dinners, and even hosted these into her 90’s! They had lots of friends they got together with frequently, playing cards or games, or having picnics or outings together. The family took time out for a vacation every summer, and later Margaret and Ed took bus tours, which produced lasting friendships. They celebrated milestone anniversaries by taking the family on trips, creating many fond memories with children and grandchildren. Margaret adored her grandchildren and they all adored her too!

A highlight of their years together was building a new home on their farm in 1980. In March 2018, they moved off their beloved farm, into Parkside Assisted Living. Margaret made friends wherever she went, and she loved reaching out to others. She loved visiting with anyone who stopped by. On July 22, 2021, Ed passed away. Shortly after this, Margaret developed health issues, with frequent falls and her cancer returning. Margaret continued living in their apartment until her passing on November 1st. She had wonderful caregivers, with Traditions Health and Parkside Assisted Living staff. They took such good care of her and it was apparent they cared for her as much as she cared for them. The family would like to thank them all for their wonderful care, which was so appreciated!

Margaret is survived by her daughters: Karen (Greg) Jaworsky of Newton, Jan (James) Britton of Denver; son, Dean (Beth) Hein of Hillsboro. Susan Nell Schrepel, 86, died peacefully on September 23, 2022, in Lawrence, surrounded by her children. Susan was born in 1936 in St. Louis, MO, to Charles and Nellie Lee Frederick. Susan married Dan F. Schrepel on July 19, 1958. Susan was preceded in death by her husband, Dan; parents, Charles and Nellie Lee Frederick; and brother, Bob Frederick. She is survived by her children: Ann Klockau (Chris), Jane Schrepel (Eric Boldt), and Robert Schrepel (Kelli Ziegler); grandchildren: Emily Keizer (Dustin Jones), Patrick Keizer, and Henry Boldt; step-grandchildren: Kate Klockau (Ryan Mazur) and Kit Klockau (Gabrielle); sister-in-law, Margey Frederick; and four nephews and their families. Susan graduated from the University of Kansas in 1958 with a degree in education. While at KU she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, elected to the Mortar Board, and President of Associated Women Students. She later earned a Master of Education from Wichita State University. For 27 years she was an educator with the South Central Kansas Special Education Cooperative. Susan and Dan raised their family in Pratt. Susan loved being a part of the community and was active in many civic organizations, including the Pratt Public Library, the Vernon Filley Art Museum, Pratt Regional Medical Center, and P.E.O. She was also a dedicated member of the Pratt Presbyterian Church. All who knew Susan experienced her gift of hospitality. She welcomed friends and family into her home with open arms, hosting many dinner parties, pool parties, and holiday gatherings. Susan will be remembered for her smile that lit up a room, kind heart, and generous spirit. After a life well lived, Susan is now a lively addition to God’s kingdom.
