HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 will host its second annual Educator for a Day event in celebration of American Education Week on Thursday, November 17. &nbsp;

Educator for a Day is an immersive event that goes beyond a typical school tour. Community leaders will be paired with a USD 308 principal while engaging in classroom activities, meeting with staff, and sharing their experiences with district leaders. &nbsp;

The 2022 Educator for a Day event will host 20 area leaders. The purpose of the experience is the provide a unique opportunity to gain understanding of the challenges and rewards of education, as well as highlight the innovative ways USD 308 is investing in their staff, students and families. &nbsp;

This year’s Educator for a Day participants are:&nbsp;

“Educator for a Day is an opportunity to build partnerships in the community and show the skills and talents of our staff and students. There are great educational and extra-curricular activities happening in our buildings, and this is a great way for community stakeholders to get a first-hand look at what it means to be an educator today. We are excited to host such a diverse group of participants, and I look forward to hearing about their experiences,” said USD 308 superintendent, Dr. Dawn Johnson.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

USD 308 to host Second Annual Educator for a Day event next week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Hutchinson Planning Commission continued to discuss a draft ordinance to change city policy on the keeping of chickens at their meeting on Tuesday.

The intent is to have planning consultant Matt Williams look at the specific language to clarify that the amount of chickens, that the board hopes can be kept between eight and 20, can be restricted by the amount of area with proper fencing, rather than simply by the square footage of the lot entirely. Chickens would be allowed in the R-2, R-3, R-4, R-5, R-6 and MH districts.

All chickens must be kept within a fenced part of a yard and provided with appropriate shelter. All chicken coops, hen houses and other structures used to house chickens must be kept neat in appearance and in sanitary condition.

All chicken coops, hen houses and other structures used to house chickens must be set back a minimum of 10 feet from side lots, 5 feet from rear lot line and 50 feet from any adjacent residential dwelling, church, school or business that is outside of the owner’s property lines and shall not project closer to the front or side street than the principal structure.

No roosters shall be kept, and no public slaughtering or processing of chickens allowed.

Owners can also apply for an additional permit if they are raising chickens for their own food.

Anyone keeping chickens improperly and found to allow chickens to run from their property and damage the property of their neighbors will be subject to action pursuant to Chapter 7 of the City Code.

The zoo, veterinarians and the State Fairgrounds are exempt from the proposed regulations.

The new members of the Hutchinson Planning Commission were also introduced at the board's meeting.

Elaine Carter and Megan Rucker were approved by the City Council to take seats on the board.

Chicken ordinance not quite hatched by planning commission

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Central Christian School Stewardship Dinner Nov. 12 is booked.

"If people are interested in attending, they can call the school and get on the waiting list," said Dr. John Walker with Central Christian. "Otherwise, we are pretty full and packed out for that night, as well."

Part of the reason is a nationally known speaker is coming to Hutchinson.

"We're excited to have Dr. Everett Piper come be our speaker," Walker said. "He was the President of Oklahoma Wesleyan University for 17 or 18 years, I believe, and really just has a good message towards education, Christian education and has been featured on lots of different news outlets, speaking on religion and education and leadership and politics."

The Stewardship Dinner will again feature a mass CCS choir that combines all students from first through twelfth grade along with a performance by the high school brass ensemble. Call the school to see if there are any vacancies at (620) 663-2174.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After two years of its operation being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/christiansoupministry/">Christian Soup Ministry</a> in Hutchinson is&nbsp;back to standards and ready to serve with the 36th Annual Thanksgiving Dinner on Nov. 23. &nbsp;

The annual Thanksgiving dinner started when the ministry was still on Avenue F. It started with four turkeys. &nbsp;

Thirty-six years later, Christian Soup Ministry now cooks 20 turkeys to feed people in need. &nbsp;

“We haven’t done it for the last two years because of the pandemic, so Dillons provided a chicken dinner for us, these last two years,” explained&nbsp;Stanley Murdock, Director of Christian Soup Ministry. “But we’re back to our regular turkey dinner.”&nbsp;

The turkeys, as well as almost everything else that will make up the dinner,&nbsp;are all contributions by the community. The only things not donated by the public are pies and bread rolls, which are provided by Kroger. &nbsp;

“Our love for the community,” Murdock said. “That’s why we do the soup kitchen every day, because we love doing things for the community and we want to see people not go hungry.” &nbsp;

Christian Soup Ministry’s mission statement is: “To feed the body and soul.” &nbsp;

According to Murdock, the soup kitchen feeds around 100 people each day it is open. &nbsp;

She has been with Christian Soup Ministry for 32 years. &nbsp;

The itinerary for the Thanksgiving dinner begins with a devotion at 11:45 a.m., then the meal will be served from noon to 2 p.m.&nbsp;

“My brother, a chef with Crestview Country Club in Wichita, he comes over and makes our dressings and gravy for us every year,” Murdock said. &nbsp;

Leftovers will be sent home with attendees. &nbsp;

Murdock said Christian Soup Ministry still needs volunteers and donated foods, especially turkeys, by Nov. 21. &nbsp;

She is also encouraging people to sign up to have meals delivered to their homes if they cannot make it to the dinner. People need to be signed up by 6 p.m., Nov. 21. &nbsp;

Home deliveries will start at 10 a.m., the same day as the dinner. &nbsp;&nbsp;

“We already have about eight people that will deliver the meals,” Murdock said. “But people needing meals need to sign up and this is the one time they can sign up without a medical referral.”&nbsp;

“They just need to call me and give me their address and how many meals they need so I can get them on the list.” &nbsp;

Murdock said this is the only time of year where they deliver to everybody.&nbsp;

The dinner will take place at Christian Soup Ministry located at 301 E. Third Ave. &nbsp;

Christian Soup Ministry is open to those in need on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Meals are served at 5 p.m. &nbsp;

Soup Kitchen back to turkey for Thanksgiving dinner

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The HutchCC Board of Trustees will consider bids for the campus Courtyard and Greenspace Renovation at its meeting on Thursday. 

The recommendation is to approve the low bid from Prairie Landworks, Inc. in the amount of $1,810,000.

The Fire Science program is also upgrading from a 1995 fire engine to a&nbsp;2007 American LaFrance Custom Pumper, The recommended bid is $80,000 from Brindle Mountain Fire Apparatus.&nbsp;

The program will also be buying twelve wireless facepiece radios that are compatible with their breathing equipment at a cost of&nbsp;$ 45,197.88 from TBS Electronics.

The board will also consider a replacement to succeed Marla Eriksen. No name for any potential nominee is listed on the meeting agenda.

The Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees will hold their meeting at 7:00 p.m. in the Justice Theater of the Shears Technology Center at Hutchinson Community College at 1300 North Plum.

KINGMAN COUNTY — A K-11 bridge over Smoots Creek in Kingman County has reopened to full traffic following repairs and after being restricted to one lane since this past summer.

The bridge on K-11 is northwest of the city of Kingman and about 6 miles north of U.S. 54/400.

Traffic on the bridge had been restricted to one lane as a precaution because of deterioration of the bridge rail. The lane restriction had been in place until further analysis could be completed on the bridge and repair plans could be developed. The analysis determined the deterioration could be addressed with minor repairs. The Kansas Department of Transportation made those repairs and will continue to monitor and inspect the bridge, which had already been planned for replacement.

Construction of a replacement bridge is expected around early 2025. The current bridge was built around 1953.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The United Way of Reno County is holding their Shop Local, Give Local event tomorrow, November 9th. 

The event will have 13 local boutiques and stores and attendees will be able to enjoy shopping from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Hall.&nbsp;

There is a fashion show, appetizers, door prizes and time to enjoy connection with others. Tickets are $25 at the door. 

The boutiques will be donating a portion of sales to United Way of Reno County.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The deadline for consideration if you want to be on an appointed Hutchinson city board or commission is coming soon.

"People are always looking for ways to give feedback and input into what goes on in their community," said Dave Sotelo with the City of Hutchinson. "A lot of times that's reactive, right? Something that's already happened and then we go and try to figure out how to address what has already happened. This is a good way to stay informed of what goes on in our community, stay engaged and be proactive on the decisions that we are making for our community."

Terms are for three years and will begin Jan. 1.

Those wishing to apply should submit their applications as soon as possible, but no later than Nov. 14. The previous process ended up with a very 'insider' feel to it, in that either current board members or city staff made most of the suggestions.

"They are likely to recommend people that are already represented, because they were part of that board already," Sotelo said. There are three seats being voted on today for Reno County Commission. One is the seat being vacated by Ron Sellers in District 1. Randall Parks is on the ballot for that seat, with Cris Corey staging a write in campaign. Also up for grabs are the two new seats with the expanded commission that was approved by the public. In District 4, Democrat Michael Jobe and Republican Mark Reese are facing off in the general election. In District 5, Don Bogner won the primary, but Penny Poitras is staging a write in campaign.

Also up today is the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican Jerry Moran. He has two opponents in that race, Libertarian David C. Graham and Democrat Mark R. Holland.

Also up are all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Kansas Governor's race is also being contested between four candidates, incumbent Democrat Laura Kelly, Libertarian Seth Cordell, Republican Derek Schmidt and Independent Dennis Pyle.

There are also races for Secretary of State, Attorney General, Treasurer, and Insurance Commissioner.

All 125 state house seats are up for election.

Two Reno County judges are up for retention, Trish Rose and Daniel Galligan.

The State Board of Education seats are also up.

Six of the seven Kansas Supreme Court seats are up for retention, as are seven on the Court of Appeals.&nbsp;

The quarter-cent sales tax renewal in the City of Hutchinson is on the ballot, as is a special question in Arlington for a 1% sales tax increase for 10 years for road and street operation and maintenance.

General election today; Polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

A Hutchinson woman is raising money for her boyfriend who recently underwent brain surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) in Omaha, Neb., to remove a tumor on Nov. 7. &nbsp;

To offset the costs of&nbsp;her boyfriend’s medical expenses the woman, Cassie Withington, is making and selling cancer ribbons of any color, as well as&nbsp;puzzle pieces for Autism.&nbsp;

Withington said the&nbsp;tumor was discovered in the last full week of October&nbsp;after her boyfriend, Jesus Reyes, had suffered a pair of seizures. &nbsp;

“There were no strange behaviors, nothing out of the ordinary, every once in a while, he’d fall down,” Withington said. “But it really started to be concerning when he was driving to work one morning, and he had a seizure behind the wheel.”  &nbsp;

Doctors found a low-to-medium grade tumor in Reyes. They will know&nbsp;more, including if the tumor is cancerous, following removal and subsequent study by pathology. &nbsp;

“Scared. Stressed. We were just in awe,” Withington said, when describing how she and Reyes felt upon finding out his condition. 

Reyes had been seeing a local Hutchinson provider for bad migraines. 

According to Withington, the provider told Reyes to medicate with Tylenol and claimed it was just his sinuses from working around dust and dirt.&nbsp;

"That’s what he was doing, and then it just got progressively worse,” said Withington.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Worse culminated&nbsp;when Reyes was&nbsp;working in Nebraska for Hutchinson-based Longfellow Foundations. While driving to a job site, Reyes had his first seizure behind the wheel of his vehicle. He then had another episode at the job site. &nbsp;

He was transported to a hospital in Bellevue, Neb., where staff found the tumor.&nbsp;&nbsp;

From there, Reyes was transferred to&nbsp;UNMC, where doctors ran more tests, including MRIs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“They sent him home for two weeks so we could get stuff figured out with our boys,” Withington said. “When they found the tumor, the doctor said he could not work any more until this was taken care of.” &nbsp;

On Nov. 2, Withington and Reyes went back to Omaha, where they have resided for the last two weeks. &nbsp;

Reyes went in for a craniotomy on Nov. 7, with the intention of removing 80% to 90% of the tumor, subject to location in the brain. &nbsp;

Withington has spent $1,854 for gas, hotel fees, food, and a babysitter for their sons. &nbsp;

Their&nbsp;first hospital bill has not been posted, but is well over $5,000.&nbsp;

Following the operation, Reyes will be out of work for four-to-six weeks and will be severely limited in activity.  &nbsp;

Post-initial surgery procedures&nbsp;for Reyes could be anything from radiation therapy or chemo therapy, depending on what pathology determines.&nbsp;

Withington said she decided on her method of raising money, using her Cricut machine to make cancer ribbons and puzzle pieces for Autism, following a conversation with Reyes’ aunt. &nbsp;

“He got me the Cricut for my birthday,” she said. &nbsp;

So far, Withington has only sold two of her products. She is charging between $10 and $15 for a cancer ribbon of any color or a puzzle piece for Autism awareness. &nbsp;

Withington and Reyes are also interested in trying a cooking fundraiser, based off Reyes’ love for cooking, to raise money for expenses incurred during this tough time in their lives. &nbsp;

Longfellow Foundations has rallied to Reyes and Withington’s aid.&nbsp;

“Jason Holt, the vice president, we went in and talked to him before we went to Nebraska and that company is amazing,” Withington said. “Because I had mentioned his health insurance and he said, ‘don’t worry about his Blue Cross and Blue Shield, we will pay his premium.’ We just have to pay his out-of-pocket.” &nbsp;

Hutchinson couple raising funds for medical bills

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson woman was arrested on rape charges on Monday.

According to a release from Hutchinson Police, they found out on September 30th that there may have been unlawful sexual acts between 32-year-old Tyann White and two juvenile males. Since then, two more boys have been identified as additional victims.

White was arrested on suspicion of four counts of rape, three counts of aggravated sodomy, three counts of aggravated indecent liberties and indecent solicitation of a child.

White is being held at the Reno County Correctional Facility with a bond of $420,000.

This investigation is still ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.

Hutchinson woman arrested on rape charges

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Police arrested a man who injured an officer while resisting on Sunday afternoon. 

Officers were sent to the 300 block of East 8th just after 4 p.m. Sunday for a loud music complaint. Forty-five-year-old Gary McQueen was acting disorderly and so officers attempted to arrest him. McQueen resisted and one of the responding officers was injured.

The officer was transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment and later released.

McQueen was arrested for (1) Aggravated Battery of a Law Enforcement Officer and (2) Interference with Law Enforcement and transported to the Reno County Correctional Facility.

Hutch PD officer injured while making Sunday arrest

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Deputy Elections Clerk Jenna Fager said that the advance voting numbers were significant through the end of the special hours on Saturday.

"At the close of that, we had 4,787 people come in and vote early," Fager said. "I looked back at 2018 and I think by the end, we had about 5300."

Hutch Post does not yet have Monday numbers, as advance voting closed at noon. However, you can vote at your regular polling place on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

"You can go to <a href="https://www.renogov.org/138/Elections">our website</a>, or you can go to <a href="https://sos.ks.gov/elections/elections.html">VOTEKS.gov</a>," Fager said. "It is a pretty lengthy ballot this go around, so we recommend you definitely look your ballot up and do your research and look at the issues that are on it, before you go to the polls."

Advance numbers significant, turnout likely similar to 2018

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Seth Dewey, Health Educator with the Reno County Health Department, won the 2022 Kansas Prevention Community Leader Award, recognizing his outstanding contribution to community prevention efforts. Dewey was presented the award during the annual Kansas Prevention Conference October 27-28, 2022, in Wichita.

The award is given to an individual who has shown leadership in their community prevention efforts and leads in a way that others want to follow. The person awarded has shown to be a leader for local community action and change.

Dewey said that he was nominated for his work with the Reno Recovery Collaborative, which consists of Reno County citizens and organizations who are committed to the reduction of harm caused by the substance use epidemic. The web site, <a href="http://www.renorecoveryks.com">www.renorecoveryks.com</a>, is a resource tool created for Reno County citizens. The site is designed to help the community overcome the dangers of substance abuse by providing online digital resources and screening tools for people who may be struggling with substance abuse.

Dewey has been with the Reno County Health Department since January 6, 2020.
