HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) Instrumental Jazz and Vocal Jazz ensembles are on their way to perform at the UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival in Colorado, and in preparation the community is invited for a Jazz Sendoff at the Stringer Fine Arts Center on April 18. &nbsp;

 Between the Instrumental Jazz and Vocal Jazz ensembles, 22 students will be attending the UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival from April 20 to April 22. &nbsp;

“There’s about 250 plus ensembles that perform over the course of the three days,” Greg Weis, HutchCC Instructor of Music and Jazz Program Coordinator, said. “Those are vocal jazz groups, big bands, combos, and they arrange from middle school groups to high school to college ensembles like ours.” &nbsp;

The UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival is one of the premier jazz festivals in the U.S.&nbsp;

“We get to work with some really phenomenal clinicians afterwards,” Weis said. “We’ll do our performance; they’ll give us some feedback privately in a room off to&nbsp;our own, and those are often some of the top musicians and top jazz professors from around the country that end up coming for that.” &nbsp;

The HutchCC Vocal Jazz ensemble will perform on Thursday, April 20, directed by Neal Allsup. The HutchCC Instrumental Jazz ensemble will perform on Saturday, April 22, directed by Greg Weis. &nbsp;

The instrumental ensemble will be performing four pieces, with selections by jazz legends Miles Davis and Thad Jones, as well as a modern piece&nbsp;composed by a Denver pianist. The modern piece, Jelly Beach, will feature a hip-hop and jazz blend. &nbsp;

The Instrumental Jazz and Vocal Jazz ensembles will be performing their festival pieces at the Jazz Sendoff on April 18 before they leave for the festival on April 20. The Jazz Sendoff will feature performances by the combos section too. &nbsp;

Weis sees the HutchCC jazz ensemble's journey to UNC/Greeley as a chance for the group to grow. &nbsp;

“We’re going there to perform, gain some experience, and then learn some stuff from clinicians and check out what the rest of the country sounds like,” Weis said. &nbsp;

Weis said this trip is important for his students to see what jazz programs look like at other colleges across the U.S., especially when it comes time to transfer from HutchCC. &nbsp;

He believes in building stronger performers by having his students play in front of audiences they really do not know. &nbsp;

The Jazz Sendoff will take place at the B.J. Warner Recital Hall in the Stringer Fine Arts Center located at 600 E. 11th St. in Hutchinson at 7 p.m. April 18.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HutchCC jazz to play before Colorado trip

The registration date for the annual Hard Winter Wheat Quality Tour is coming up on May 1, 2023, but hotel blocks will be released soon. The tour, sponsored by the Wheat Quality Council, brings in participants from around the world who are tied to the wheat industry, but may not have ever been in fields. These individuals are able to interact with Kansas farmers, network with their peers, learn more about wheat production and assess the condition and yield potential of the hard winter wheat crop across the state of Kansas.

This year’s tour dates will be May 15-18. Participants gain a firsthand understanding of what it takes for farmers to grow, manage, harvest and market the crop. Over the three-day tour, they will canvass the state’s wheat crop from Manhattan to Colby to Wichita and back again. Along the way, they will stop every 15 miles or so to estimate yields in wheat fields on their routes. Every car will carry at least one Wheat Tour veteran who is not only familiar with the route, but also basic agronomy and the yield estimate formula. This allows participants to ask questions about the wheat that they are seeing, as well as diseases, growing conditions, field observations and more.

“These tours are a tremendous learning experience for any new people in the industry,” said Dave Green, executive vice-president of the Wheat Quality Council. “This training and mentoring opportunity is an extremely good value for the amount of fundamental wheat industry knowledge that a person can acquire in just three short days.”

Foreign and domestic buyers of Kansas wheat will participate, giving those folks a chance to see the wheat that they trade, mill, bake and ship growing in the Kansas fields. Tours have seen upwards of 120 participants in the past, giving Kansas farmers the chance to interact with and influence their customers around the globe.

More than 600 crop evaluations will be made in wheat fields throughout the state, and yield estimates made using a formula developed by the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Participants are sure to see drought conditions across much of the state. As of April 9, Kansas winter wheat condition rated 61 percent poor to very poor, 26 percent fair, and only 13 percent good to excellent, according to USDA NASS. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 80 percent short to very short, and subsoil moisture is 83 percent short to very short.

For Kansas farmers, you do not have to be on the Wheat Quality Council’s Hard Winter Wheat Tour to scout wheat fields and make your own estimates. Wheat Scoop: Register Now for 2023 Hard Winter Wheat Quality Tour

HAVEN, Kan. — The inspection was closed last September into the explosion and fire at the Tenawa Haven Midstream gas facility on April 14, 2022. 

The explosion left two people injured and caused extensive damage to the plant. Fortunately, there were no fatalities. OSHA spokesperson Scott Allen told Hutch Post in an email this week that the inspection was closed on Sept. 23, 2022.

"The main focus of the inspection was to determine the cause of the incident and determine if the company had followed OSHA standards and regulations," Allen said. "After examining the physical evidence, employer programs, and interviews with the employer and employees, the cause of the explosion could not be determined and no OSHA violations were discovered."

The fire forced the evacuation of numerous rural residents near the property and several businesses along the west side of Haven.

No OSHA violations found, cause still undetermined a year after explosion

RENO COUNTY, Kan. —<a href="http://www.riseupreno.org/">&nbsp;Rise Up Reno Prevention Network</a> is celebrating its 20th birthday this year.

For 20 years, Rise Up Reno has been doing hard work in the Reno County community. They specialize in substance misuse prevention, suicide prevention, school-based mentoring, strengthening families, and empowering youth leaders in the community to 'rise up' and be the change.

A lot has changed in 20 years. Rise Up Reno was originally called 'Communities that Care,' and they located in an office building in downtown Hutchinson. They have since re-branded as 'Rise Up Reno Prevention Network,' and moved into the USD 308 administration building. 

Since 2003, they have expanded their list of services, now serving on the Reno Recovery Collaborative, the Kansas Suicide Prevention Coalition, and operating the Service Learning class at Hutchinson High School. 

While a lot has changed, the most important thing has stayed the same. Prevention is the message they have shared since day one. Their mission is to help people look 'upstream' and stop the problem before it ever starts. 

Rise Up Reno strives to empower youth to make good choices, empower families to talk to their kids, and empower the community to advocate for their mental health. 

Rise Up Reno Prevention Network is thankful for the community support it has received over the last two decades and they are looking forward to 20 more years of being Reno County's local prevention specialists.

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Area fire crews were busy Thursday with at least three calls.

The first was a 911 call made for a grass fire in the ditch at Parallel and Broadacres at 9:45 a.m. Due to the extreme fire conditions on Thursday, the fire quickly spread into tall dry grass. 19 trucks from Pretty Prairie, and Fire Districts 4,8 &amp; 9, along with a command truck and support truck from Reno County Emergency Management responded. 

The fire burned approximately 100 acres and was just under one mile in length. Crews were assisted by the Reno County Sheriff’s Office, Pretty Prairie EMS, and Hutchinson-Reno County 911. 

Due to trees and brush burning, crews used fire to their advantage and conducted a burn out operation to remove dry fuels that were close to these areas to avoid a rekindle. Crews in Reno County often use fire as a tactical tool to help mitigate wildland fires and conduct back burns.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A second call was at 12:08 p.m. to the Tyson Foods plant in South Hutchinson, the third to a grass fire south of the city of Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Tyson plant employees were being allowed to return as of 2:40 p.m. The temperature Thursday was in the mid 80s with sustained winds around 30 mph. Firefighters from Hutchinson, South Hutchinson, Buhler and Pretty Prairie responded to the Tyson fire.

An additional afternoon grass fire to the south of the city stayed north of Highway 50, and south of Siemens Gamesa and was quickly contained. Hutchinson Fire is responsible for that area.

Area firefighters busy Thursday, no injuries reported

KINGMAN COUNTY—One person died in an accident just after 2 a.m. Thursday in Kingman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Kenworth semi driven by Lawrence Eugene Kempf, 57, Amarillo, Texas, was westbound on U.S. 54 four miles east of Kingman.

The semi struck a pedestrian identified as Daniel&nbsp;Guevara, 63, Kansas City, Missouri, who was in the roadway near the center line.&nbsp;

Guevara was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Livingston Funeral Home.

&nbsp;Kempf was properly restrained and not injured, according to the KHP.

Pedestrian killed in Kingman County

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson police announced the arrest of a man connected with an armed robbery that took place earlier this week.

According to the release, shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday, officers responded to a home in the city with an armed intruder. A victim was forced into a bedroom at gunpoint and the suspect, later identified as William J. Alexander, stole the person's car and fled.

Alexander was also a suspect in a burglary in the same area of the city. 

Wichita police located the vehicle Wednesday and brought Alexander back to Hutch, where he was booked Wednesday evening on aggravated kidnapping, aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and burglary-residential.

Alexander is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. 

The Hutchinson Police Department Investigations Division is still seeking additional information in this case. Police arrest aggravated robbery suspect

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Dillon Nature Center and EARTH MATTERS are honoring Earth Week by bringing Charles “Chick” Keller to speak on Thursday, April 20. His talk is titled “Climate Change: What Legacy Are We Leaving?”

"He has said that there will be over $100 trillion of economic construction and destruction in the next few years," said Beth Southern with EARTH MATTERS. "Climate change is real. It's a bigger problem than all of us know about. We have good plans to slow down that climate change. He will be talking about those plans."

The event will take place at Dillon Nature Center’s main building. There will be a light dinner at 5:30 p.m. with the talk following at 6:00 p.m. Reservations are required. The event $15 for members of DNC and $20 for non-members. The speech will examine the cause of climate change, the impacts to mankind driven by climate change, the plan and schedule to thwart climate change, and finally how mankind is reacting to the enormous impacts of climate change.

"Americans are aware of climate change," Southern said. "We need to do a little bit of changing our own lifestyle, too."

Charles “Chick” Keller is a retired executive who has been teaching classes in climate change for the last three years. He held senior positions at both Sprint and Black &amp; Veatch in Kansas City. Additionally, he was a professor in the Master of Engineering Management program at Kansas University where he taught classes in finance and strategic planning.

EARTH MATTERS hosting speaker next week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce will hold its April Legislative Forum on Saturday.

The Legislative Forum will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Gallery Theatre in the Stringer Fine Arts Center.

"It's a great opportunity to hear from the legislators what's been happening in Topeka," said Chamber CEO Debra Teufel. "They've all been invited. My understanding is that we have Representative Paul Waggoner and Representative Probst planning to be there."

The forum will be live-streamed on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/HutchChamber">Hutch Chamber Facebook page</a>.

Written questions will be accepted that morning.

Hutch Chamber Legislative Forum this weekend

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Reno County residents will soon have another option for a cool drink on a hot day later&nbsp;this summer. Thomas Tea Company LLC is bringing Texas-based iced tea franchise HTeaO to Hutchinson. &nbsp;

The project came together with the help of a $390,000 loan package.&nbsp;

“It is fortunate that we have great partners like NetWork Kansas,” Jackson Swearer, Entrepreneur Navigator and Director at <a href="http://www.startuphutch.com/" target="_blank">StartUp Hutch</a>, said. “They worked with us to layer together the necessary gap financing to get this new venture off the ground. Just like customers will be able to layer together flavors of iced tea at HTeaO.”&nbsp;

Thomas Tea Company, co-owned by Darren Thomas, Jacqueline Thomas, and Jacob Thomas, utilized several StartUp Hutch loan programs to acquire the necessary capital,&nbsp;to bring HTeaO to Hutchinson, including E-Community, StartUp Kansas, and new GROWKS funds. &nbsp;

These funds are all made available to Reno County businesses and startups through a partnership with NetWork Kansas, the statewide network for entrepreneurship communities.

 Construction has begun on the new HTeaO building at 1619 E. 30th Ave.  with plans to open in late summer 2023.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Darren Thomas said he and his wife Jacqueline Thomas, “are excited to serve Hutchinson by providing a place everyone can come and refresh.” &nbsp;

New tea franchise financed, aiming to refresh Hutchinson

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 2300 block of East Avenue G on the south side. 

In 1915, airplane flight was in its infancy. Hutchinson had no airport at that time, but it did have Emerson Carey! He was Hutchinson's most-notable entrepreneur and visionary. 

Carey took a section of his farmland and turned it into a landing field. He made his sister, Mrs. W.E. Albright, the live-in manager of the property and the Albright Airfield was born. 

There were many national, as well as state, notables who made their way through this facility. Carey even started the Hutchinson Airways Corp. for transporting mail and small packages. The first photo shows that plane.

 He also started a pilot training school, known as the Mid-American Air College. The second photo shows that plane.

 Carey named his son, William, as president of both the airways and the college with both offices located at 1326 E. Ave. A, where Interfaith Housing is now located. 

The field was abandoned in 1930 to construct a cement runway airport at 4th and Airport Road. Its dedication was June 6, 1930. That property was also owned by Emerson Carey. 

At the dedication, there were 23 airplanes and two gliders shown for the celebration. The third photo shows an aerial of the Albright Airfield location between Lorraine and Halstead on the south side of East Avenue G.

 </figure>STEVE HARMON Hutch Post ContributorToday's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 2300 block of East Avenue G on the south side. In 1915, airplane flight was in its infancy. Hutchinson had no airport at that time, but it did have Emerson Carey! He was Hutchinson's most-notable entrepreneur and visionary. Carey took a section of his farmland and turned it into a landing field. He made his sister, Mrs. W.E. Albright, the live-in manager of the property and the Albright Airfield was born. There were many national, as well as state, notables who made their way through this facility. Carey even started the Hutchinson Airways Corp. for transporting mail and small packages.  </figure> Carey named his son, William, as president of both the airways and the college with both offices located at 1326 E. Ave. A, where Interfaith Housing is now located. The field was abandoned in 1930 to construct a cement runway airport at 4th and Airport Road. Its dedication was June 6, 1930. That property was also owned by Emerson Carey. At the dedication, there were 23 airplanes and two gliders shown for the celebration. The third photo shows an aerial of the Albright Airfield location between Lorraine and Halstead on the south side of East Avenue G.<figure>

DODGE CITY, Kan. — A former Hutchinson teacher and a former Sterling teacher are part of the 2023 class for the Kansas Teachers' Hall of Fame.

Russell (Rusty) Allan Hilst, a long-time math instructor in Hutchinson USD 308 and Dan Whisler, a long-time science instructor in Sterling USD 376 are among this year's eight inductees.

The Class of 2023 will be the 47th class inducted into the Kansas Teachers' Hall of Fame. A luncheon and the induction ceremony will be held June 3 in Dodge City.

Over 450 teachers have been inducted thus far. Each inductee must show evidence of outstanding teaching, positive interactions with students and parents, qualities that set the teacher apart from other educators, a continued pursuit of educational opportunities throughout their career, a willingness to share ideas by conducting workshops or classes for parents and teachers, involvement in community activities, educational recognition and awards and a philosophy of education that is a positive example for others.&nbsp;

Nominees must have taught in Kansas for at least 25 years.

Hilst, Whisler to be inducted into Kansas Teachers Hall of Fame

NEWTON, Kan. — At Tuesday night’s meeting, the Newton City Commission adopted changes to City water and sewer rates that include gradual increases over the next several years.

Rates have remained flat for the past seven years, and operational costs have increased dramatically. In recent years, City staff have cut the utility budgets, postponed purchases, increased efficiencies, and drawn down reserve funds to meet the budget.

After a series of work sessions in the past few months, the City Commission on March 14 directed staff to bring back ordinances that eliminate the 38% Sewer Plant Upgrade Fee and stop paying off the plant loan early, keep the property-tax relief transfers to the General Fund intact, and gradually increase rates over the next few years to keep the utilities solvent.

The new rates will take effect in January 2024. The ordinances provide for six years of gradual increases, with a review at least every three years to determine if adjustments are needed. The utilities will still spend down reserves for the next few years.

The total utility bill (water/sewer/trash) for a user of 300 cubic feet of water is $96.21 today. In 2024, their bill will be $96.62. For a 600 cubic feet user, the total bill today is $151.32. In 2024, their bill will be $151.97.

Newton water and sewer rates to increase

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Naismith Hall of Fame coach and two-time national champion Bill Self will be presenting the second Dillon Lecture of the 2023 Series. Self’s lecture will be held Tuesday, April 18 at 10:30 a.m. at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

"We're excited to have him here," said HutchCC spokesman Denny Stoecklein. "We've had great response. Historically, we sell some tickets in advance, but not a significant number. It's a general admission event. We have seen a significant increase in the advance ticket sales for this one, and even added a few more patrons that want to have the opportunity to go to the patron luncheon with Coach."

Tickets to the lecture will be available beginning at 9:45 a.m. the day of the lecture at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. Self's medical issues that came forward during the run up to the NCAA tournament are unique among DLS speakers, at least in the time Stoecklein has been with the school.

"In the eight years I've been at the college, almost eight years, the only thing that I can think of off the top of my head that has impacted it was not them, but it was COVID."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Hutchinson Police Department is investigating an April 12 crash in connection to the death of a 76-year-old man.

At 10:48 a.m., HPD officers, Hutchinson Fire Department, and Reno County EMS were dispatched to the 1700 block of E. 30th Ave. for a single vehicle crash.&nbsp;

It was discovered a 76-year-old man was driving westbound on E. 30th Ave. when his vehicle left the roadway and struck several objects including a light pole.&nbsp;

The accident caused an outage, affecting many residential customers.&nbsp;

"Power went out just shortly before 11 a.m., we had just about 640 people out," Kalie Bohlen, Evergy Communications Manager, said. "Pretty quickly, we were able to pick up 450 customers, and then they finished up those repairs and had everyone back on by 11:40 a.m."&nbsp;

Bohlen said the outage lasted about 40 minutes.&nbsp;

The man was transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center by Reno County EMS, where he was pronounced dead.&nbsp;

As of this writing, the victim's immediate family has not been notified, so no names will be released.&nbsp;

The crash is being investigated by the Hutchinson Police Department Traffic Unit. This is an ongoing investigation.&nbsp;

"Pretty quickly, we were able to pick up 450 customers, and then they finished up those repairs and had everyone back on by 11:40 a.m."&nbsp;Bohlen said the outage lasted about 40 minutes.&nbsp;The man was transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center by Reno County EMS, where he was pronounced dead.&nbsp;As of this writing, the victim's immediate family has not been notified, so no names will be released.&nbsp;The crash is being investigated by the Hutchinson Police Department Traffic Unit. One person dead in Wednesday crash

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Hutchinson Police are investigating a robbery that occurred on April 11 at the Subway sandwich shop at 1620 E. 30th Ave.&nbsp;

Around 9:18 Tuesday morning, police responded and they were told that the suspect knocked on the back door. An&nbsp;employee opened the door, at which point the suspect entered the business and demanded money. 

According to HPD, after obtaining roughly $300 in cash, the suspect left in a blue/gray minivan. 

Officers were unable to locate the suspect. 

The only thing reported stolen was cash. No employees were injured in the robbery.

Investigation continues into Tuesday robbery

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Third Thursday in Downtown Hutchinson is all about fighting spring fever by being outdoors&nbsp;on April 20. &nbsp;

 </figure>By JUDD WEIL&nbsp; Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — Third Thursday in Downtown Hutchinson is all about fighting spring fever by being outdoors&nbsp;on April 20. &nbsp; “We’re celebrating spring fever,” Loribeth Reynolds, Hutch Rec Marketing Manager, said. “Cure your spring fever by getting outside in beautiful Downtown Hutchinson.
