NEWTON, Kan. — After years of planning, Newton Fire/EMS finally implemented Mobile Data Terminals (MDTs) in our fire and EMS apparatus.
MDTs are computerized devices that communicate directly with Harvey County Communications. This allows Newton Fire/EMS personnel to access critical real-time information while en route to emergency operations. MDTs are equipped with technology to provide mapping and specific information about an incident or a patient. MDTs allow for constant communication of vehicle location and availability status between dispatch and other responders.
The MDT project was funded by a grant award from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The main goals of the project were to improve efficiency, minimize over-the-air radio communications, and improve the accuracy of call times.
