RENO COUNTY, Kan. — According to an update from the Kansas Department of Transportation, road work continues on K-61 between US 50 and the McPherson/Reno County line through the rest of August. 

There will be alternating lane closures, as the road is being repaved. Speed limit in the work zone outside of the city will be 55 MPH. Width limit is 16'0".

The line repainting project between Inman and McPherson is now complete.

K-61 paving project going on this month

TOPEKA, Kan. — Kansas Governor Laura Kelly reappointed Lauren Queal Sill of Hutchinson to the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission this week.

Serving as a regulatory body for KDWP, the Commission is a seven-member, non-partisan board made up of no more than four members of any one political party. Commissioners serve staggered four-year terms and advise the Secretary on planning and policy issues regarding administration of KDWP. 

All Commission meetings are accessible and open to the public, and time is always set aside for public comment on non-agenda items.

The commission works to conserve and enhance Kansas’ wildlife and provide the public with opportunities for the use and appreciation of the state’s natural resources. The governor appoints all seven members of the commission, one from each fish and wildlife administration region.

The governor’s appointments to the wildlife and parks commission are not subject to Senate confirmation.

Kelly also reappointed Emerick Cross and Warren Gfeller. Cross is from Kansas City. Gfeller is from Russell.

Hutchinson woman to stay on KDWP commission

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The USD 308 Facilities Committee announced the midway point of their year-long study of the district’s infrastructure. To date, the committee has been meeting regularly to thoroughly examine and analyze the district’s building stock as well as grappling with particularly onerous issues like declining enrollment, increased student needs, building and grade configuration, and the future of USD 308.

The committee, comprised of a diverse group of community members, educators, administrators, school board members, and experts, embarked on this important task with the aim of assessing the existing conditions of USD 308’s facilities and identifying structural priorities. The ultimate objective is to create an optimal learning environment for students, while operating in a climate where enrollment is declining, and school funding is decreasing.&nbsp;

Terry Wiggers, lead architect with the contracted firm Schaefer Architecture stated, “It’s one thing to&nbsp;work&nbsp;in a community where their&nbsp;population is growing, and they don’t have enough buildings to accommodate the rising number of students. It’s an entirely different beast when we’re&nbsp;working with districts whose enrollment is declining and&nbsp;we&nbsp;need to look at maximizing efficiencies to take into consideration future budget constraints&nbsp;of the district. Wiggers went on to say, “We’ve&nbsp;worked in both types of districts. What we’re&nbsp;seeing at USD 308, however, is the commitment and dedication by administration and the committee to make decisions based on the sustainability and values of the district. These are hard conversations, but the committee members keep showing up and keep diving deep. We’ve&nbsp;been impressed.” &nbsp;

Currently, the district owns 21 facilities within the USD 308 boundary, with 960 staff members, and almost 4,000 students. The buildings range in age from opening Allen Elementary in 1938 to the Career &amp; Technical Education Academy in 2009. “Randy Norwood, Bob Williams, and their staff have done an outstanding job maintaining our facilities,” reported Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson. “We’re fortunate to have buildings in the condition they’re in, given their age. The dilemma we’re facing with our facilities is that we have more classroom space than we can efficiently utilize. When you couple that with a teacher shortage and we can’t afford to operate the way we have in the past.”

As recently as 2013, USD 308 had an enrollment of 4,860 students. In less than 10 years, the district has declined over 1,000 students. District building capacity is nearly 5,000 students and predictions estimate enrollment dropping as low as 3,500 in another 10 years. We are graduating more students every year and enrolling fewer kindergarteners; that is the essence of the decline.&nbsp; Other schools across the state and in Reno County are facing the same challenges; this is not unique to USD 308. &nbsp;“School funding is tied to the number of students we have enrolled,” Dr. Johnson stated. “If we want to exist in 2030, 2040, and beyond, we absolutely have to assess our building stock to be more fiscally responsible and efficient.” She went on to say, "We need our buildings to accommodate those changes so we’re adhering to our values of perseverance, compassion, integrity and most significantly for me in this work; innovation."

In the next steps, Wiggers and his team from Schaefer Architecture, will combine the data accumulated over the past 6 months of work with the committee to offer solution proposals for consideration. Key issues the committee has addressed thus far include grade and building configuration, neighborhood schools, attendance centers, as well as early childhood program locations. Kari Jackson Mailloux and Jordan Fee have been serving as the committee’s cochairs. Both Mailloux and Fee have young children in the district and have repeatedly stated the importance of ensuring the long-term viability of our beloved district. Fee, says, “I loved being a Salthawk and am proud to serve as a cochair of this committee. I want my kids to be Salthawks and in order to guarantee the future of USD 308, we have to have the kind of tough conversations that this committee is tackling.” &nbsp;

Once Schaefer Architecture presents multiple concepts&nbsp;to the facilities committee, next steps in the study process will be to review the,&nbsp;concept options,&nbsp;engage community stakeholders, hold community meetings,&nbsp;receive feedback,&nbsp;refine the concepts and finally present a master plan recommendation to the Board of Education by the end of the calendar year. Collaboration and community engagement will be paramount in any recommendation being made to the Board. The district will be seeking input and involvement on any proposals to ensure transparency, garner support, and foster a shared commitment to the district’s facilities.&nbsp;

The USD 308 Facilities Study Committee’s report will serve as a roadmap for the future of the school district’s infrastructure. It will outline a comprehensive plan that aligns with the district’s mission, vision, and values. The district administration appreciates the dedication and expertise of the committee members and their commitment to enhancing the educational experience for all students in USD 308. The collaborative efforts undertaken in this study signify a significant step toward a better future for the school district and the Hutchinson community as a whole.

USD 308 Facilities Committee releases mid-study update

NEWTON, Kan. —&nbsp; At Tuesday night’s meeting, the City Commission approved a revised agreement with Newton USD 373 to provide three school resource officers (SROs) to work in Newton schools.

The City Commission first considered the agreement in June and expressed some concern about the level of compensation provided by the School District, originally proposed at $35,000 per officer, or $105,000 total. City and school staff then collaborated to revise the district’s contribution to $43,000 per officer or a total of $129,000 per year.

The total annual cost for one entry-level officer is about $84,000 for salary and benefits. The SROs work primarily on-campus in the district when school is in session, while they remain City employees under the supervision of the chief of police. During summer and other school breaks, the officers work regular patrol duties for the City.

The agreement covers issues such as access to school records, information sharing, roles and restrictions for each party involved, and includes a comprehensive job description of the SROs. The term of the agreement is one year, giving the opportunity to make future changes as needed.

The SRO program in Newton began in 1998 for the purpose of reducing crime, violence, and drug abuse, and to build relationships between law enforcement and students and school staff. Both the City and School District have considered it a huge success.

The Board of Education is expected to consider the agreement at its next meeting on Aug. 14.

Newton renews SRO agreement

RENO COUNTY — The Reno County Planning Commission will meet Thursday to discuss one zoning case and do more work on the commercial solar regulations.

The zoning case is a request by Jack Redman to vacate a portion of a 40-foot easement for future road and utilities located on Lot 6, Block 1 of Rolling Dunes Subdivision. The address of the property is 803 E. Rolling Dunes Road.

Public comments will be allowed on that zoning case.

The Planning Commission will also continue its work on&nbsp;potential text amendments to the county's Zoning Regulations regarding commercial solar development.

No public comment on the regulations was taken at the April 20 meeting, as it took them more than two hours just to read through and discuss the first draft provided by staff and make some initial edits.&nbsp; No public comment on that topic was taken at the May 18 or June 15 or July 20 meetings or will be taken on Aug. 17. Once a final draft is ready for discussion, notice will be given so the public can comment on the proposal.&nbsp;

MCPHERSON COUNTY—Crews were on the scene of a fire Thursday afternoon at McPherson Metals, 1060 Woodside Street, on the west edge of McPherson.

The fire started when a welding torch cutting a metal tank set residual oil sludge on fire, according to Fire Chief T. J. Wyssmann.

Crews let the fire burn itself out and it created heavy smoke in the area. There were no injuries, or air quality issues as a result of the fire, according to&nbsp;Wyssmann.

Crews extinguish fire at McPherson metal plant

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Thursday, VA announced that Veterans and survivors who apply (or submit their&nbsp;<a href="https://www.va.gov/resources/your-intent-to-file-a-va-claim/" target="_blank">intent to file</a>) for PACT Act benefits by 11:59 p.m. Eastern on Monday, August 14, 2023 will be eligible to have their benefits backdated to August 10, 2022 – the day that President Biden signed the PACT Act into law.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"The easiest way for folks to sign up for PACT Act benefits is to go to <a href="https://www.va.gov/disability/file-disability-claim-form-21-526ez/introduction">VA.gov</a>, and click on a button there to apply for a disability claim," said VA Press Secretary Terrence Hayes. "What that does is, even if you don't have all the necessary documents, you're filing an Intent to File and it holds your place in line and you, too, will be eligible for those backdated benefits."&nbsp;

VA has made this decision out of an abundance of caution after experiencing technical difficulties with <a href="https://www.va.gov/resources/the-pact-act-and-your-va-benefits/">VA.gov/PACT</a> in recent days. Specifically, due to extremely high demand, some Veterans who have sought to submit their&nbsp;<a href="https://www.va.gov/resources/your-intent-to-file-a-va-claim/" target="_blank">intent to file</a>&nbsp;for PACT Act benefits have received error messages while doing so.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Despite these messages, VA has successfully logged every one of these <a href="https://www.va.gov/resources/your-intent-to-file-a-va-claim/">intents to file</a> – meaning that every Veteran or survivor who has received an error message while applying for PACT Act benefits can consider their intent to file complete. VA is working on contacting these Veterans to clarify their status.

"It takes maybe five or ten minutes for you to actually do it," Hayes said. "We're routing folks to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.va.gov/disability/file-disability-claim-form-21-526ez/introduction">VA.gov</a>&nbsp;to apply today."

You do not have to have all of your paperwork in order to submit an <a href="https://www.va.gov/resources/your-intent-to-file-a-va-claim/">Intent to File</a>. It is important to do so in order to get access to the backdated benefits for the past year.

PACT Act backdated deadline extended to Monday

RENO COUNTY — Reno County Youth Services received a two-year grant award of $326,281.06 through the Kansas Department of Corrections for a new program serving juvenile offenders in the community.

This new program is called Project YES, Youth Empowerment Services, and will provide individual plans of support and rehabilitation services for juvenile offenders ages 10-17 in Reno County who are referred by Juvenile Intake &amp; Assessment. This program bridges the gap between juvenile intake and court action. Project YES will address risk factors related to juvenile offender behavior including but not limited to education/employment, personality/behavior, and attitudes. In addition, the program will review and address interpersonal interactions among family members and recommend appropriate resources.

This program is under the direction of David Patterson of Project YES, Inc. and he can be reached at <a href="mailto:david.patterson@projectyesks.com">david.patterson@projectyesks.com</a>. The Juvenile Corrections Advisory Board and Board of County Commission will provide local oversight of the program. The current grant award is for July 1, 2023 - June 30, 2025. Project YES is a program for youth and families who want or need additional support to make positive changes.

“We have youth advocacy workers to help fill in the gaps,” said Patterson. “Project YES will create an IPS or Individual Plan of Success with the youth and create a list of goals. The youth are also given help if they have an addiction, support in getting a driver’s license, shown how to increase their job interviewing skills and assistance in preparing to obtain a job.”

KanDrive is now KanDrive.gov

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners approved disbursing funds for a new industrial park south of South Hutchinson at their meeting on Wednesday.

"Last year,&nbsp;Growth Inc., a separate entity but managed by the Chamber, was able to use our own internal funding, through some other gifts and pledges from donors, to acquire 154 acres on K-96 for the future development," said Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber CEO Debra Teufel.

Growth Inc. will now receive ARPA funds in the amount of $1.2 million for the development of a K-96 industrial park that is in an unincorporated area of Reno County. The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber also received $2 million from the State of Kansas' Base Grant 2.0 for the project. Teufel sees a great opportunity for return on the county's investment, but they have to get water to the site.

"In order to really ready a site that could be prepared for projects that require 200, 300, perhaps even 400 or more acres, we have started engineering studies to make sure, what are the infrastructure requirements and the ability to extend infrastructure. There was the question about water. We've had several meetings between the intergovernmental agencies to talk about water service to this site and the other projects that you have on your radar that were mentioned earlier with Yoder and HABIT. Initially, some of those discussions were about infrastructure that could be one combined line. Then, I think it became evident the timeline to get water to Yoder was so imminent that would need to move forward. It's probably a smaller sized line than would be required for industry. Hutchinson, the city of Hutchinson has been at the table talking about this as well and starting their own studies about their own water rights and how much water they have that they could sell to an industrial park of this nature that would be outside their city boundaries."

Part of what the county money will go for is the engineering to figure out where the water line can go and also, it's possible some of it could be used to buy more land.

"As we are able to attract industry, our goal is then that the industry would purchase the ground, which then would reimburse the money that we've already put into that first piece of the development, could potentially reimburse for land that could be acquired with these funds and that really could then be used as a driver for the future," Teufel said. "None of these dollars are being used for staffing costs. All of it is for site development and it will be an asset that yes, can be monetized to the sale of industry and really create a return. The projects in the pipeline that are looking at Reno County right now, we have submitted on several, but they are in the scale of billion dollar investments. We've talked about what could that mean to the property tax base of Reno County and the communities involved and it's hard to make predictions, but some of the projects alone, valuation of the project would be greater than the whole valuation of Hutchinson today."

The approval for the funding was unanimous.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners on Wednesday held three separate non-elected personnel executive sessions with physicians regarding the Consulting Physician position to assist Reno County's Local Health Officer. 

This is required because the County's Local Health Officer is not a doctor. According to the Request for Qualifications issued earlier this year, the consultant’s responsibilities are as follows:

1. Direct the Local Health Officer on program and related medical and professional matters when requested by the Public Health Officer or County Board of Health.

2. Provide qualified, licensed, and professional medical advice to the Local Health Officer as required by K.S.A. 65-201.

3. As needed, be available for phone consultation with public health staff on medical-related matters.

4. Except for emergency events which may require additional hours of service, the Consultant is expected to provide minimal amounts of service each month. Applicants should provide in their response a monthly contract at an hourly rate for services.

5. The Consultant shall communicate with the County’s liability insurer and follow procedures of that insurer, if any, as necessary to comply with any requirements of the County’s liability insurance.

This is for public health. This isn't just all general health items at the Health Department. This medical consultant is only for public emergencies. The most recent such emergency was the COVID-19 pandemic.

The intent is to have a decision either later in August or in early September.

Conversations with medical advisor candidates held Wednesday

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 3700 block of North Pennington Road on the west side. 

Rustic Isle was built in 1939 by Robert W. Nelson, co-owner of Nelson Manufacturing and Supply (plumbing supplies), at 612 E. 1st. Rustic Isle was Nelson's personal 93-acre playground. It included a nine-room, two-story cabin; stone barbeque pit; a lake with a concrete and timber boat landing; and a 50-foot dam. 

There was a 200-foot-by-50-foot island on Cow Creek, connected by a 52-foot rustic bridge. It had a large timber gate with wagon wheels and concrete lion heads. 

In the 1940s and '50s, an in-ground swimming pool was added, along with dressing rooms with showers and restrooms. Also, the place had an enclosed picnic area and outdoor theater with dual 35mm projectors and sound system. Some adult movies were shown. 

In 1956, a small airport was added. The first photo is a postcard showing the celebration of the airfield opening.

Bob Ging later purchased the property around 1960. Vandalism took its toll after that and the property improvements were eventually cleared away. 

The second photo is a Google Earth view of the property today at 3700 N. Pennington Rd. where Rustic Isle was located. The property is now owned by the Albert and Rebecca Miller Living Trust.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 30

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The grand opening of the HTeaO location is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 11 at noon. Thomas Tea Company LLC is bringing Texas-based iced tea franchise HTeaO to Hutchinson.&nbsp; There will be half price drinks and half price gallons all day.

According to StartUp Hutch, the project came together with the help of a $390,000 loan package.&nbsp;

Thomas Tea Company, co-owned by Darren Thomas, Jacqueline Thomas, and Jacob Thomas, utilized several StartUp Hutch loan programs to acquire the necessary capital,&nbsp;to bring HTeaO to Hutchinson, including E-Community, StartUp Kansas, and new GROWKS funds. &nbsp;

These funds are all made available to Reno County businesses and startups through a partnership with NetWork Kansas, the statewide network for entrepreneurship communities.

The new HTeaO is located at 1619 E. 30th Ave.

HTeaO to open Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Creekside Neighborhood will meet Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. in Conference Room 2 on the second floor of the Hutchinson Public Library at 901 North Main to discuss the possibility of getting involved in Hutch Fest in October.

The Creekside Neighborhood is an area bounded by Main Street, Fourth Avenue, Cow Creek and 11th Avenue with Main as the eastern boundary.

The neighborhood was formally introduced in 2019.

PRATT COUNTY—Three people died in an accident that occurred just after 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Pratt County.

According to Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Chad Crittenden, a 2021 Nissan Kicks driven by Lilia Jasmin&nbsp;Barajas, 32, Wichita, was westbound on U.S. 54, just west of SW 19th Avenue and rear-ended the trailer of 2014 Peterbilt semi hauling sand that was stopped in a construction zone.

Barajas and two children in the back seat died, according to Crittenden. The driver of the semi Pedro Guilloty-Rodriguez, 38, Haines City, Florida, was not injured.&nbsp; &nbsp;Barajas was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Kansas woman, 2 children dead after rear-end crash

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of Reno County Commissioners tabled the choice of a new county newspaper to a future meeting at their meeting on Wednesday. There are ongoing questions regarding the legal status of the Rural Messenger and its status with the Postal Service.

"When the RFP was returned, the Rural Messenger's status with the U.S. Postal Service was they had an application pending," said County Counselor Patrick Hoffman. "They were optimistic that by this point, they would have a determination by the U.S. Postal Service that approved their standing as a periodical, but as of today, they don't have that yet. I would suggest at the very least, tabling the whole issue until it's determined by the Postal Service whether or not they are a periodical."

Nancy Stucky with the Ninnescah Valley News raised questions about the overall process, after the commission allowed the Rural Messenger to match her price, which is not how they normally handle requests for proposal.

"In May, I submitted, in good faith, my response to the RFP," Stucky said. "I didn't have to change my address, and I didn't have to lower my advertising rates. I don't understand why the Rural Messenger was allowed to do that. They shouldn't have even been considered, since their response to the RFP didn't qualify."

Commissioners understood Stucky's point, and furthermore, chair Daniel Friesen raised the question of why counties have to have a designated newspaper at all, since cities are able to opt out of that through home rule statute.

"Frankly, I think we would all agree we don't need to publish in a print paper anymore," Friesen said. "The circulation on any of them is too low to really be effective. It's available online and people have public access to the internet if they don't have it at home."

The issue will come back at a future meeting, though, as the Kansas Association of Counties has not yet been successful in changing the statute to allow for counties to opt out of having a paper.

County tables newspaper question

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Quality of Life is a play at Stage 9 in Hutchinson taking the stage this weekend. The play revolves around two couples dealing with moral, ethical, and religious beliefs as one couple faces the murder of a daughter and the other couple faces cancer.

This poignant drama deals with issues many of us face with hope providing a motif throughout the play. Stage 9’s production is directed by Jo Stropes. There is also quite a bit of humor in the play.

"The author, Jane Anderson, is very good at sprinkling humor throughout the script," Stropes said. "The audience isn't brought to a terrible state of depression by the time they leave the theater. It's quite a funny show."

Much of the humor comes from the different social experiences of the two couples in the play. Dinah (Lisa Sack) and Jeanette (Gaye Tibbets) are distant cousins, both geographically and spiritually. Dinah and Bill (Mike Saunders) are Midwesterners holding fast to their Christian beliefs while mourning the death of their daughter. Jeanette and Neil (Ron Sylvester) are free-spirited academics clinging to their own spiritual beliefs while dealing with tragedy. They have been burned out of their home and are living in a yurt while Neil battles terminal cancer. Anderson was a writer on the AMC show Mad Men shortly after writing this play.

"If you think of Mad Men and those dialogues, you have these long passages, but then you have these really, really short back and forth conversations," said Ron Sylvester, who plays Neil. "To me, those are the hardest to remember, when you only have two words, but you have to put them in at the right time. It's really got a nice rhythm to it."

The play revolves around two couples dealing with moral, ethical, and religious beliefs as one couple faces the murder of a daughter and the other couple faces cancer.This poignant drama deals with issues many of us face with hope providing a motif throughout the play. Stage 9’s production is directed by Jo Stropes. There is also quite a bit of humor in the play."The author, Jane Anderson, is very good at sprinkling humor throughout the script," Stropes said. "The audience isn't brought to a terrible state of depression by the time they leave the theater. It's quite a funny show."Much of the humor comes from the different social experiences of the two couples in the play. Dinah (Lisa Sack) and Jeanette (Gaye Tibbets) are distant cousins, both geographically and spiritually. Dinah and Bill (Mike Saunders) are Midwesterners holding fast to their Christian beliefs while mourning the death of their daughter. Jeanette and Neil (Ron Sylvester) are free-spirited academics clinging to their own spiritual beliefs while dealing with tragedy. They have been burned out of their home and are living in a yurt while Neil battles terminal cancer. Anderson was a writer on the AMC show Mad Men shortly after writing this play."If you think of Mad Men and those dialogues, you have these long passages, but then you have these really, really short back and forth conversations," said Ron Sylvester, who plays Neil. "To me, those are the hardest to remember, when you only have two words, but you have to put them in at the right time. Quality of Life opens Thursday

HAVEN, Kan. — Haven Police posted on social media on Tuesday that passing a school bus with the stop arm out is an expensive ticket. 

In Haven, this fine on the first violation is $315 plus court costs of $92.50. A total of $407.50. 

Please stop when the arm is out. Forget the fine, remember the life the sign is there to protect.

The state law changed in 2018.&nbsp;A third violation anywhere in the state will cost a driver more than $1,000.

Haven USD 312's first day of school is Wednesday, August 16.

Haven police remind residents not to pass stopped school buses

MUNICH, Germany — Siemens Energy announced on Monday its results for the third quarter of fiscal year 2023 that ended June 30, 2023.

“Our third-quarter results demonstrate the challenges in turning around Siemens Gamesa. The strong performance of our other business areas gives me confidence in our company’s ability to put businesses back on a strong footing”, says Christian Bruch, President and CEO of Siemens Energy AG.

Siemens Energy’s results of the third quarter were impacted by charges at Siemens Gamesa. These relate mainly to quality issues of certain onshore platforms as well as increased product costs and ramp-up challenges in the offshore business.

Siemens Energy continues to benefit from a favorable market environment. Orders of €14.9bn reflect 54.2% growth on a comparable basis (excluding currency translation and portfolio effects), primarily driven by large orders at Siemens Gamesa and Grid Technologies (GT). 

The Book-to-bill ratio (ratio of orders to revenue) came in at 1.98 and led the order backlog to a new record of €109.0bn.

Siemens Energy reported a Net loss of €2,931m (Q3 FY 2022: Net loss €564m), including negative tax effects from valuation allowances on deferred tax assets in connection with the charges at Siemens Gamesa. Corresponding basic earnings per share (EPS) were negative €3.42 (Q3 FY 2022: negative €0.58).

In light of the developments at Siemens Gamesa, management adjusts the outlook for Siemens Energy. Due to the aforementioned challenges at Siemens Gamesa, management now expects for Siemens Energy Group comparable revenue growth to be in a range of 9% to 11%, a Profit margin before Special items between negative 10% and negative 8% and a Net loss of around €4.5bn. Free cash flow pre tax now is expected up to a negative low triple-digit million € amount. Management maintains its revenue and Profit margin assumptions for the segments GS, GT, and TI.

Siemens Gamesa has a nacelle facility in Hutchinson.

Siemens Gamesa's issues have effect on 3Q results for Siemens Energy

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The last Saturday Night at the Y event of the 2022-23 school year will be held this Saturday, August 12, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the YMCA at 716 East 13th in Hutchinson.

Saturday Night at the Y will not meet in September due to the State Fair and will resume in October for the 2023-2024 school year.

After normal business hours on the second Saturday of the month the Y opens their doors to area middle schoolers where they can play basketball in the gym, workout, swim and more.

The event is for 6th through 8th graders from Reno County.
