HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As part of the city's CIP discussions in the budget process that took place in a study session Tuesday, there is a proposal to turf Hobart-Detter Field and two other fields at Fun Valley.

"I've met with the Athletic Director from USD 308 as well as HCC," said Parks and Facilities Director Justin Combs. "Both have verbally committed, we're waiting on letters, to split the cost of turf at Hobart-Detter and two fields at Fun Valley. Fields two and three, which is the home fields of the college and the home field of the Salthawks, to split those costs 50-50."

The educational entities would pay their half over 10 years.

"Our total share would be $1.2 million, in that range with a commitment from those two organizations for about $1.2 million, as well," Combs said.&nbsp;

Combs made clear that this would fix the underlying problems, too.

"The bulk of the cost of building artificial turf is not the turf itself," Combs said. "It's the underdrain system that's underneath. I've worked with three different contractors, took them on site and showed them what the drainage issue is. Most likely, we'll end up with a small retention area beyond kind of left center. It will be on past the scoreboard, so that we can get the water off the field."

There will be 12 to 18 inches of stone underneath the turf to make the drainage work. The intent at this point is to bond the project in 2024.

Hobart-Detter, two fields at Fun Valley to get turf

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Hutchinson Public Library (HPL) announced they are celebrating 60 years of participating in the Federal Depository Library Program on Friday, June 30.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"It's a historic moment for the library, it's also historic for Hutchinson," Katie Broker, HPL Adult Programing Coordinator, said. "The Hutchinson Public Library was the first public library in Kansas to become a federal depository library."

There are federal depository libraries all over the U.S., however Broker added there are only 1,150.&nbsp;

"That means our residents have the ability to walk in here, access publicly any information that we have related to government, federal document, state, and local," Broker said.

Public access to the government documents collection is guaranteed by public law under Title 44 United States Code.&nbsp;

The Hutchinson Public Library has approximately 8,000 items in their collection. This includes government magazines, such as the Smithsonian, Library of Congress, and Military Review. There are 7,300 government documents in the collection itself.&nbsp;

"Our collection includes but is not limited to, one of the most popular items that we have are maps of national parks and historical sites,"&nbsp;Gina Long, Government Documents Depository Coordinator, said. "We have items here in Kansas, for example, the&nbsp;Quivira Wildlife Refuge and refuges around it."

Long added it is little known by people that Hutchinson has two historical sites to the west. The first is Fort Larned in Larned, Kansas. The second is Nicodemus, Kansas, noted for being the furthest western settlement of freed African slaves following the Civil War.&nbsp;

People can use the federal depository collection to find locations, hours, and contact information for these historical sites and more.&nbsp;

Long said HPL also receives a lot of military history and branch-specific information for their collection.

"For example, we just got a volume in that talks about all of the commanders for the Air Force through, I want to say, 2002, with biographies and photos and everything." Long said. "That's a bound volume."&nbsp;

As part of the Federal Depository Library Program, HPL also receives import and export raw data for every port in the U.S. This is very important for the Kansas international trade business and economy, as quite a bit of the state's products are exported.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Other items include congressional hearings, particularly transcriptions relating to Reno County and Hutchinson. There are also transcriptions from the Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Land Management, Department of Defense, NASA, and the Smithsonian.&nbsp;

This is a historic milestone for the Hutchinson Public Library and the Hutchinson community and the library is looking forward to celebrating it with with their patrons just in time for Independence Day. Everyone is invited to the celebration, even if they have not been to HPL before. 

This is a great opportunity to learn about the services the library offers and meet the people that make those services possible.&nbsp;

The itinerary leading up to the day of the celebration on June 30 includes:&nbsp;

A Buffalo Hunt in the Kansas Room where all&nbsp;week long HPL will have a scavenger hunt for buffalo hidden in their Kansas room. Find one, return it to the reference desk and receive a prize. There is one special white buffalo hidden each day with a special prize. There is only one chance to find the white buffalo per day. Look for information around the Kansas Room about the white buffalo and its importance in Native American culture.

A Monument Match, which will be&nbsp;a monument matching game to play all week at the library. People can visit the GovDocs display by the reference desk and match the 3D model to the monument name for a prize.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The day of the 60th anniversary celebration will have cake from Holly's Sweet Treats in Hutchinson, ice cream, and more activities.

Additionally, there will also be a historic photo display featuring the library and Downtown Hutchinson from the Reno County Museum. 

Dillon Nature Center and the Cosmosphere will also be part of the celebration with activities and information inside the library on the second floor. 

Live music from the Hutchinson Mountain Dulcimers will be in the Kansas Room.

Hutchinson Public Library: 60 years of federal partnership

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 Director of Nutrition Services Jennifer Tatro notes that though the Summer Nutrition Program isn't quite as large as the daily lunch during the school year, it's still significant in terms of getting Hutch kids fed.

"We employ roughly 20 staff members over the summer," Tatro said. "The meals are prepared at HMS-7 and then they are transported to the various sites. All of our meals are to go. We are open Monday through Friday for lunch service from 11 a.m to 12 p.m. at the Fairgrounds Splash Park. The Hutchinson Public Library is open from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. We are also open at HMS-7 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m."

One of the more difficult parts of the job is knowing how much food to send to each site, so the district needs information to accomplish that.

"There's no preregistration required," Tatro said. "Some days we might serve 500 at a site and other days, we might serve 250."

Children need to be present to receive meals for the first time at a site.

"Once you bring all your children in to us the first time, we will issue you a meal pass with the number of kids that you brought," Tatro said. "From that point going forward, any adult can bring in that meal pass and show it to us and they do not have to have their children present in order to get the number of meals on the meal pass."

The Summer Nutrition Program runs weekdays through July 28, 2023. There will be no meals served on July 3, 2023, and July 4, 2023.

Tatro: Hutch kids get fed through Summer Nutrition Program

This is day 3 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Combines are kicking into gear across a wider swath of central and eastern Kansas. Officially, the Kansas wheat harvest is now eight percent complete, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending June 18, 2023.

Winter wheat conditions were rated at 54 percent very poor to poor, 30 percent fair and 16 percent excellent. The conditions echo farmer sentiments about persistent drought conditions tempered by selective, better-than-expected fields as harvest progresses.

Harvest is further along in Sedgwick County at 20 to 25 percent complete as producers spot around for dry wheat to cut for the territory covered by the Famers Coop Elevator Company. Shawn Talkington reported from Cheney that harvest started with below-average yields but above-expected quality with test weights of 62 to 64 pounds per bushel. Test weights have fallen to 58 to 61 pounds per bushel after the last rain. Farmers are now fighting weeds coming up through the canopy, including crabgrass, palmer amaranth and kochia.

“All in all, quality is better than expected,” Talkington said. “Just due to the year that we’ve had, it’s just going to be kind of disappointing as far as yields go.”

In Marion County, Kansas Wheat caught up with Paul Penner, who was harvesting a field of 15-bushel wheat on Tuesday. This is one of his poorer fields this year with others averaging up to the mid-40s.

Normally, he would expect this field to average 55 to 65 bushels per acre. The field received a half to three-quarters of an inch of rain at planting, had a good stand in the fall and looked good all winter. But, then the rain ran out and Penner didn’t receive any more moisture until late spring. Now, weeds can be seen between the thin rows, so Penner said he wanted to get the field cut before the weeds got any taller.

Penner expects harvest to wrap up in one week. Averaging out better fields with poorer ones, he expects overall yields to be about half his normal. AG Radical from AGSECO is proving to be a good variety that is holding up better to the drought and has fusarium resistance. Moisture is coming in at 12.8 percent, and a sample tested at 13.6 percent protein. Test weights are light, and the tested sample had many shriveled kernels.

Localized conditions continue to reflect better harvest results where scattered showers came. While the area has gotten quite a bit of rainfall since May, Marion County is still rated in D3 (extreme) drought with moisture at a deficit of three to five inches for the year.

Variability is also evident in Saline County, where Gareth Pettijohn also started harvesting on Monday and in his second field on Tuesday. Just east of Salina, he expects to cut most of the acres he planted with two fields insured out due to drought.

All of his wheat was planted following soybeans. With the drought, there has been no disease pressure, but bindweed came in with the late rains. Pettijohn based inputs on the results of Haney soil tests, resulting in only one round of fungicide application and putting down 30 pounds of nitrogen versus the normal 100 pounds.

Pettijohn is seeing distinct differences between good ground in the river bottom where the wheat is up to the belly button and rocky hilltops where it may reach the middle of the shin. Some of the poorer fields did not even put berries all the way up the head. His first two fields were making 36 bushels per acre to low-40s with 60-pound test weight and 11.5 percent protein.

Day 3, Kansas Wheat Harvest Report

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Downtown Hutch announced on June 20, they and the City of Hutchinson will present the 2023 Chalk the Town in partnership with artist and Hutchinson teacher, Kara Vaughn on July 1 and July 2. 

The event is inspired by the overwhelming response to Vaughn’s viral video. TikToks documenting her chalk art have attracted local media coverage, over 30 million views and 418.4 thousand followers.

The inaugural event will consist of a kick-off celebration from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 1 in George Pyle Park. The kick-off event will consist of food and family-friendly entertainment and chalk art opportunities.&nbsp;

On Sunday, July 2, there will be a scavenger hunt from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to find chalk icons created by Vaughn. These chalk icons represent five downtown business sponsors.&nbsp;

Check-in will start at 10 a.m. A free Chalk the Town 2023 t-shirt sponsored by Sleep Shoppe will provided to the first 150 participants that complete their scavenger hunt passports.

Upon check-in, participants will receive a map, chalk, and passport. The map will guide participants to each of the five locations in Carey Park to find a chalk icon representing a business sponsor. At each location, a volunteer will provide a sticker with one of the letters C, H, A, L, and K to represent that each icon is found on the passport. Once the word CHALK is completed, participants can provide their contact information on the back of the passport and enter into a drawing at check out. 

The scavenger hunt will close at 6 p.m., and the winner will be announced on Facebook Live and TikTok.&nbsp;

Business sponsors are invited to provide a booth in the park along with more family-friendly entertainment and more opportunities to chalk the town.&nbsp;

Chalk the Town event to be held early July in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss believes that even though the Federal Reserve didn't raise rates this month, that doesn't mean they are done raising rates entirely.

"I think they are going to raise interest rates at the end of July," Goss said. "That's a real concern. Inflation is coming down dramatically. In other words, the Producer Price Index, that's in terms of agricultural prices and so on, coming down very quickly right now. Year over year numbers are negative right now, in terms of producer prices. Of course, in terms of farm land prices, that's continuing to grow despite these lower inflation readings."

The rate fluctuations really concern the bankers that are part of the Creighton University Rural Mainstreet Index.

"They are concerned about what the Federal Reserve is doing right now to them, in terms of what they have to pay for deposits," Goss said. "In other words, on the short end, bankers are having to pay more and more, higher and higher interest rates for their deposits. At the same time, they are not getting those same higher interest rates on their loans that they make to businesses and to farmers."

Goss also is concerned about the overall world economy and how that can impact agriculture, in particular.

"China's economy is slowing down, down, down," Goss said. "Of course, there's the issue with Taiwan. Mexico is the number one export destination for most of the states, except the northern states, Minnesota and North Dakota, it's Canada, but nonetheless, that's a concern of mine going forward."

Though agricultural commodity prices have been strong, weather does have a negative effect on yields, particularly in wheat country this year.

MCPHERSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The McPherson Chamber of Commerce will be announcing their 70th E-Loan recipient in July. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The McPherson Chamber recently received&nbsp;the E-Community Loan Activity Award at the 2023 NetWork Kansas Annual Retreat for the highest number of E-Loans distributed. The McPherson Chamber of Commerce is a partner of NetWork Kansas and administers the McPherson County Entrepreneurship Community program.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Since 2012, the McPherson County E-Community Loan Program has approved 69 low interest loans.&nbsp;The recipient of the 70th E-Loan represents over $2.6 million dollars invested in the McPherson&nbsp;community. These investments include many added jobs and growth over the years. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Through the McPherson Chamber’s E-Community partnership, they have limited access to low interest loans and resources to assist entrepreneurs with gap financing in McPherson County. Funds are flexible and can be used for a variety of business purposes, including startup costs, purchasing an existing business, business expansion, working capital, inventory, and more.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

In addition to financing, local businesses and youth have also benefited from business education programs. The McPherson Chamber has facilitated a yearly Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge event (YEC) since 2018 and has offered various entrepreneurial programs since 2012 including:&nbsp;the Ice House Program, Growing Rural Businesses, Destination Bootcamp, and the Maker Space Boot Camp.&nbsp;

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) announced that the investigation into around 100 suspicious letters sent to legislators and public officials has now expanded beyond Kansas, so the FBI will now be the agency leading the investigation.

The KBI will continue to work with all law enforcement partners to bring these incidents to appropriate resolution.

“Our focus remains on ensuring the safety of Kansans, and holding those responsible for these crimes accountable, said KBI Director Tony Mattivi. “The KBI is so appreciative of the incredible coordination and outstanding response by countless federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, as well as by fire departments, and hazmat teams to this unprecedented event.”

Since the first letters were handled and reported by officials, the KBI had over 60 special agents, forensic scientists and employees devoted to safely collecting or screening evidence, or managing and tracking response to the incidents. Additionally, 17 hazmat teams and 12 bomb squads responded across the state.

It remains important to be vigilant when handling mail. Report any letters containing an unknown white powder to the KBI at 1-800-KSCRIME or the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or&nbsp;tips.fbi.gov.

"At this point, it appears over 100 elected state and legislative officials have received threatening letters filled with a suspicious powdery substance. Thankfully, the KDHE is saying the substance is presumptively negative for any biologicals. While this is certainly good news, it has nonetheless been a stressful last few days for our families and other citizens impacted by this cowardly attempt to intimidate the legislature. We urge all of our members to please remain vigilant and cautious when opening their mail as this case is still developing.

"We want to thank the leaders and agents of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, local law enforcement and fire departments, the Kansas National Guard, KDHE, the FBI, the Office of the State Fire Marshal and everyone else involved in the massive process of safely retrieving these envelopes. Many of these same people are also hard at work trying to find those behind this terrible act and we appreciate their expertise to quickly find those responsible and hold them accountable.

Preliminary tests have returned from this lab indicating the substance is presumptively negative for common biological agents of concern. Further and more complete testing will be conducted on this sample, as well as on additional letters that have been collected, in an effort to determine the components of the substance.

The investigation is ongoing. Nothing further will be released at this time.

Junction City Republican Representative Jeff Underhill confirmed to the Post that he was one of the lawmakers to receive mail, but that he had received communication from legislative leadership about suspicious letters generally before going to his Post Office box.&nbsp;

He said a powder was folded up between the pages of a letter 'wishing him ill', and that in his case it appeared to come from a local address.

Republican Rep. Kenny Titus from Wamego also confirmed receipt of a letter on Friday, though he was unable to comment further on Friday.

McPherson Republican Sen. Rick Wilborn said he contacted the KBI about a piece of mail he received, as well, though he didn't open it after having received correspondence from the Senate President's office and Legislative Administrative Services alerting him to the possibility of suspicious mail.

Wilborn updated Hutch Post Saturday morning, saying that he had heard that 65 Republicans and Attorney General Kris Kobach had received letters as of Friday night.

Law enforcement is working to safely collect the letters and investigate the incidents. Currently, no injuries have been reported, but law enforcement asks everyone to remain vigilant in handling mail. Any similar incidents should be reported to the KBI at 1-800-KSCRIME.

Republican Rep. Paul Waggoner, who serves portions of Reno and McPherson Counties, sent Hutch Post two photos of the letter he received.

He said that the return address on his envelope, 4310 North Monroe, matched the address of the church he attends, Crossroads Christian Church and that it was 'very creepy'.

He compared the powder to flour, but doesn't know what it was.

Leadership told Waggoner to call the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, which he did about 5 p.m. Friday.

Waggoner believes the mail may have come from transgender activists, saying, "They were the most negative and hateful mail we received all session."

UPDATE: FBI now lead agency in letter investigation

RENO COUNTY, Kan. —&nbsp;Reno County Public Works announced on Tuesday that 95th Avenue between Jordan Springs Road and Raymond Road will be closed to all through traffic beginning Tuesday, June 20 through Thursday, June 22 for crossroad pipe replacement.

Due to unsuitable detour routes between Jordan Springs Road and Sylvia Road, this road closure must be extended from Jordan Springs Road to Raymond Road.

Work on 95th Avenue continues

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council adopted new regulations for chickens in the city as part of the larger update to the city's zoning regulations at their meeting on Tuesday.

Below is the new text of&nbsp;Section 27-919 as proposed to the council.

The Keeping of Chickens shall be permitted as an accessory use to any principal lawful use in the R-2, R-3, R-4, R-5, R-6 and MH districts provided that:

A. A maximum of 8 chickens may be kept in the side or rear yard only on any zoning lot listed above. For rear yards over 2,000 sq. ft. 1 additional chicken may be kept for each additional 250 sq.ft. up to a maximum of 20 chickens.

B. All chickens must be kept within a fenced part of a yard and provided with appropriate shelter. All chicken coops, hen houses and other structures used to house chickens must be kept neat in appearance and in sanitary condition.

C. All chicken coops, hen houses and other structures used to house chickens must be set back a minimum of 10 feet from side lots, 5 feet from rear lot line and 20 feet from any adjacent residential dwelling, church, school or business that is outside of the owner’s property lines and shall not project closer to the front or side street than the principal structure.

E. No public slaughtering or processing of chickens allowed.

F. Nothing in this section shall be construed to apply to zoos, animal exhibits, veterinarian services, pet stores or the State Fairgrounds.

G. Anyone keeping chickens improperly and found to allow chickens to run from their property and damage the property of their neighbors will be subject to action pursuant to Chapter 7 of the City Code.

Staff is going to take an additional look at specifically the TA and R-1 districts to decide how best to handle those, as especially the TA district is more agricultural in nature, but there was a lot of public input on the issue.

"We had a gentleman who was a proficient winner of chicken raising categories one evening," Seitnater said. "He brought a whole new perspective to things. It wasn't an overwhelming amount of public input, but those that were interested tended to come. We probably had ten to a dozen different people speak over the course of the meetings."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson amended its fireworks ordinance at the City Council on Tuesday.

"This change now includes the sale and discharge of aerial fireworks," said Fire Marshal Mike Cain. "The dates stay the same. The times stay the same. The only other real minute change is you're not allowed to discharge except on private property unless you get a special use permit."

The reason to add the special use permit is because that's what block parties that close the streets already have to do to get them closed in the first place.&nbsp;

"That was one of our biggest issues over the years," Cain said. "People have a block party. Those streets are barricaded. I don't see the issue with them shooting in the street if the street is barricaded I don't see the problem with them doing that during a block party, if they go through the process of getting the special use permit."

However, shooting in the street when streets are open is against the new ordinance, because that is not private property. The only specific device prohibition in the new regulations is no bottle rockets. Also, a regulation against Sky Lanterns or Aerial Luminaries is being allowed to continue to stand that is part of another section of city code. Also, adults will be held responsible for juvenile offenses of the new regulations.

"If you want to let your kids out and shoot, great," Cain said. "If they are doing something illegal with them, then the adult is now responsible and is assumed to have given them consent or permission to do that illegal activity."

Other than that, fireworks will be generally allowed from 8:00 a.m. on June 30 through 11:00 p.m. on July 4. Those are the same hours when fireworks will be able to be legally sold. The county will take up its new fireworks regulations next week, but they are expected to be the same.

Fireworks changes approved Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) has been selected as the recipient of a $25,000 grant from the Arconic Foundation. The investment has allowed HutchCC to expand its Automation Engineering Technology (AET) labs.

”Arconic’s support of our AET program is greatly appreciated,” said Dr. Carter File, President of Hutchinson Community College. “With their support, we have been able to expand our student capacity by 25%, preparing even more students for careers in this high-demand, high-wage field”.

The Arconic Foundation seeks partnerships to create skill-building learning experiences that enhance individual opportunity, specifically within STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and manufacturing workforce development.

HutchCC receives Arconic Foundation grant

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;<a href="https://www.interfaithks.org/" target="_blank">Interfaith Housing and Community Services</a> has taken a major step for their new Veteran Housing Project thanks to a generous donation of $20,000 from Cargill and the Central Kansas Veteran Community Partnership (CKVCP). The announcement came on Flag Day, June 14.&nbsp;&nbsp;

With the grant, the pre-development costs for the new Patriot Place, to be located in South Hutchinson, has been funded.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

"This has been a long time coming in multiple directions. This has been prayed for," Raechel Manley with First National Bank of Hutchinson said. "This has been brought to fruition by many organizations and hopes. When we saw that there was a need, and Interfaith stepped up and found a way to make it happen."&nbsp;

Providing safe and affordable housing, mostly for seniors, has been Interfaith’s mission since its founding in 1989.&nbsp; Interfaith, as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, runs on donations, volunteers and grant funding.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Their most recently completed project was the <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/4d57d1ea-e3f8-4643-9b96-6f093ed83b2d" target="_blank">LightHouse housing and resource program for young adults</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to Clint Nelson, Interfaith Housing CEO, the land for Patriot Place was acquired from Steve Schowalter, and the house on it was removed and the land was scraped.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"We are seeking to develop a 1000 square foot community room and 20 units surround that community room," Nelson said. "These we smaller units, efficiency units, one-bedroom units. Master-metered, so when we have our clients move in, they don’t have to worry about setting up utilities. We’re going to scale the rent accordingly and in a lot of cases that will likely be no rent in coming in."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Nelson looks forward to continuing the partnerships that have made Patriot Place more of a reality in the community.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"We are certainly going to continue to seek out partnerships with the CKVCP, with the VA,&nbsp;VFW, Knights of Columbus, and all the other agencies that we know are going to be bringing strength to this project," Nelson said. "As with any of these high mission projects, there are some early expenses that are sometimes hard to cover when you're talking about architectural work, design, zoning, and some of those things. With this commitment from Cargill, we will be able to fully fund our predevelopment work and we're off and running to see this project actually come to fruition."&nbsp;

According to Danny Wilson with Cargill, the Cargill Cares Council worked with an almost $80,000 budget in the last few years that they were able to put into grants for things like Patriot Place. In their last fiscal year, Cargill was able to turn that money into $120,000. &nbsp;

"With donations from corporate, we can get a 100% match, so we take $10,000 generally when we do a grant out of our local," Wilson said. "That’s why we’re excited to give this $20,000 check to the CKVCP."&nbsp;

Interfaith moving forward with Veteran Housing Project

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel said that local officials should find out about the Child Care Capacity Accelerator Grant later this week.

 </figure>NICK GOSNELL Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel said that local officials should find out about the Child Care Capacity Accelerator Grant later this week."The Reno County Childcare Task Force was in the lead on making sure that we are uncovering every opportunity to bring new dollars to the table for Reno County for childcare," Teufel said. "When the Child Care Accelerator Grant was announced, we had about a month or six weeks to put an application together. The task force has hired Crossalign Consulting to work on the grant writing aspect. They worked hand in hand with the task force and eligible projects, to put together kind of a collaborative application, that hopefully will help fund about six different expansion opportunities of childcare in the community."There are facilities in Haven USD 312, at Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System at Abundant Life, at Central Christian School and elsewhere across the county that all are hoping to get a piece of the funding to create more childcare slots. Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman is excited about her district's portion of the idea."We're looking at two facilities, two different ones," Couchman said. "They would be 70 slots total. About 35 slots in each one. What we're looking at is a building over at Buhler Grade School and a building over at Plum Creek Elementary."Teufel said each of the centers that are part of the application worked hard to get ready."All of them had to jump through a lot of hoops themselves," Teufel said. "Having an approved site plan, that went into that application.
