As temperatures drop and the first hard frost settles in, Hutchinson veterinarian Dr. John Austin of Hutchinson Small Animal Hospital is reminding pet owners to stay alert to seasonal changes that affect their pets’ health and safety.

Dr. Austin says many fall allergy issues will begin to ease now that cold weather has ended the production of pollen and seasonal plant allergens. However, he cautions pet owners to continue checking for fleas, which may surge briefly as the pests seek warm hosts before dying off in the freeze.

With winter approaching, Austin urges residents to be mindful of how long their pets—especially short-haired or indoor dogs—are left outside. Animals not acclimated to colder temperatures should only be outdoors briefly once true winter weather arrives.

Microchipping and collar ID tags remain important year-round. Austin noted that a visible phone number on a collar often gets a lost pet home faster than a microchip, which requires a veterinary clinic or shelter to scan.

At his clinic, Austin reports an increase in allergies, itching, and gastrointestinal issues, often tied to plants dropping seed pods, berries, and other irritants after an unusually rainy year. He advises pet owners to walk their yards to identify anything their animals could get into.

For homeowners treating lawns or spraying for insects, Austin warns to follow product instructions carefully. Recently, one pet became ill after ingesting residue from a sprayed area. “Insecticides affect the nervous system,” he said, emphasizing the need to keep pets away from treated spaces until fully dry.

Flea-control treatments for yards should be used cautiously, he added, noting that fleas generally hide in shaded, moist areas such as landscaping beds near homes rather than open grass.

Local veterinarian shares key winter pet-care tips as seasons change

The Farm Focus Family Award began in 1985 as part of National Farm City Week.  There have now been over 100 families in Reno County that have been recognized for their contributions to Reno County Agriculture. This year’s Farm Focus Family Award goes to the Royer family.

Bill and Kelly Royer, along with their sons Alek and Koby, represent six generations of farming in Reno and Harvey counties, with roots that trace back to 1886. 

The Royer family primarily raises wheat, soybeans, and oats, and maintains a small cow-calf operation. Bill has farmed full-time for 38 years, while also working part-time as a Senior Bank Representative at First National Bank of Hutchinson. He’s served on the local school board and continues to volunteer with Haven High School’s Clay Target team.

Kelly is an Account Manager and Senior Interior Designer at the John A. Marshall Company in Wichita. She’s also an active volunteer, lending her time to school, church, 4-H, and community events over the years.

Both Alek and Koby earned agricultural degrees from Kansas State University and returned home to help continue the family legacy. Alek operates a swathing business and volunteers as a firefighter, while Koby works part-time in seed sales with Ohlde Seed.

Recently celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary, Bill and Kelly are proud to farm alongside Bill’s parents, Bill Sr. and Leta, and their sons—three generations working together to meet the challenges and opportunities of modern agriculture.

Royer family named Farm Focus Family of the year

The Agri-Business of the Year Award is intended to honor the agri-businesses in Reno County and thank them for the important role they play in strengthening the local ag economy.&nbsp; This year’s Agri-Business of the Year Award went to Bridgman Oil.

The story of Bridgman Oil began in 1960, when Bud Bridgman became a commission agent for Standard Oil in Mount Hope, Kansas, delivering fuel and oil to local agricultural customers. In 1964, Standard Oil relocated Bud to Burrton, combining the Mount Hope and Burrton territories into one.

In 1977, when Standard Oil transitioned from commission agents to jobbers, Bud purchased both the Burrton and Hutchinson locations—establishing Hutchinson as the home office of Bridgman Oil Company.

In 1989, Brad Thompson joined the company, and together, Bud and Brad have built Bridgman Oil into the trusted, service-driven business it is today. Their commitment to customer service has always been the foundation of their success.

Give blood with Red Cross this month

HUTCHINSON — Reno County Emergency Medical Services is teaming up with The Salvation Army to help families in need this holiday season through its annual “Fill the Ambulance” Food Drive, set for Nov. 14 and 15 at Dillons Marketplace.

EMS crews will be parked outside the store at 3200 Plaza East Drive, collecting non-perishable food items to fill Christmas food boxes distributed to Reno County families.

Organizers are asking community members to donate staple holiday items, including:

Reno County EMS officials say the event is an opportunity for families to spread hope during the holiday season by helping ensure local households have what they need for Christmas meals.

The collected food will go directly into the Salvation Army’s holiday food boxes, which support individuals and families across Reno County.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 100 block of South Main on the east side.

As autos started showing up in Hutchinson in about 1906, so did auto dealerships. The Hutchinson Motor Car Co. was one of the first. The first photo shows that auto dealership, already in its second location, at 116-118 S. Main St. in 1910.

Early dealerships moved often and, by 1913, it had become the Cadillac Sales Co.

In 1919, it was the A.C. King Auto Supplies.

In 1922, the building was the Hutch Auto &amp; Tractor School in conjunction with the Salt City Business College.

By 1928, the location was Skaggs-Safeway Stores.

In 1935, the Hutchinson Electric Service.

In 1945, it was the May Way Feed Store. The second photo shows that with the employees out front.

In the 1950s it was Standard Mercantile Wholesale Liquors.

Most of us can remember when part of this location was McKenzie Body Shop Upholstery &amp; Trim from 1961 through the 1980s. The third photo shows that enterprise.

The Hutchinson Motor Car Co. was one of the first. The first photo shows that auto dealership, already in its second location, at 116-118 S. Main St. in 1910.<figure>

King Auto Supplies.In 1922, the building was the Hutch Auto &amp; Tractor School in conjunction with the Salt City Business College.By 1928, the location was Skaggs-Safeway Stores.In 1935, the Hutchinson Electric Service.In 1945, it was the May Way Feed Store. The race for the Nickerson/South Hutchinson USD 309 District 3-6 Position 6 because that race had nine people with 2 votes each. There will be a tie breaker held on Monday, Nov. 17, 2025, at 1 p.m. at the Reno County Annex.

Library to host third annual Holiday Cookie Exchange

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — During Wednesday morning’s Phone Forum program on KWBW, Hutchinson Regional Airport Advisory Committee member Jerry Kahn joined the show to clarify operations at the city-owned airport, and to shed light on how the ongoing federal government shutdown is affecting air traffic control and local aviation.

Kahn told hosts John Brennan and Max Bringle that the Hutchinson airport’s control tower remains fully staffed despite the shutdown, thanks to its designation as a non-federal tower operated under contract by Midwest ATC, which is funded through the Federal Aviation Administration.

“That airport is manned by what’s called a non-federal control tower,” Kahn said. “Those controllers are funded through a contract, and Midwest ATC has had no problems paying them. They love working there, it’s a great job and it’s run more like a business.”

While FAA-operated towers across the nation have faced numerous challenges during the shutdown, Kahn noted that Hutchinson’s contract structure has insulated its staff and kept operations running smoothly. He added that the FAA is considering expanding the non-federal model as a cost-saving measure for smaller and regional airports.

“You might see more of that because it saves the FAA money,” Kahn said. “Those non-federal jobs are great positions, they pay well, come with benefits, and the controllers are happier than in federal facilities.”

Kahn also highlighted the airport’s significance to the local economy, estimating its impact at around $26 million annually and noting the ongoing upgrades to ramp areas, taxiways and hangars to accommodate larger aircraft.

The tower is staffed daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., with pilots self-announcing after hours under Class E airspace. Kahn said operations are on the rise, averaging “tens of thousands” of takeoffs and landings per month, including both private and military traffic.

“We’re one of the few airports in Kansas authorized to fuel military aircraft,” Kahn said, crediting Wells Aircraft for securing that contract. “That’s a big part of our business here.”

As the airport continues to modernize, Kahn said several “exciting developments” are in the works, though he could not yet disclose details, and encouraged residents to consider serving on local committees to help guide Hutchinson’s future growth.

“Virtually every city or county committee is looking for volunteers,” he said. “If you care about Hutchinson’s progress, this is a great way to get involved.”

The Hutchinson Regional Airport, home to the state’s oldest operating control tower, continues to serve both local industry and visiting aircraft, including corporate jets flying in for events at Prairie Dunes Country Club or business at area manufacturers, even as federal uncertainty looms over the aviation industry nationwide.

Klemme announced that Hutchinson has been chosen as one of just three pilot communities — alongside Enid and Perry, Oklahoma — for the launch of Heartland Forward’s new Center for Investment Readiness.

Heartland Forward, a Bentonville, Arkansas-based “think-and-do tank” backed by the Walton family, focuses on building economic strength in America’s central 20 states. The new initiative will provide participating cities with access to proprietary data dashboards, performance analytics, and national-level partnerships to help measure and accelerate local development outcomes.

“This is fuel on the fire for us,” Klemme said. “It gives Hutchinson access to powerful stakeholders and national attention. It helps us attract employers, raise our economic metrics, and find new funding opportunities for local programs.”

SBIR/STTR Matching Program Opens New Doors for Tech Startups

Klemme also discussed Kansas’ newly announced Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Matching Program.
These federal Small Business Administration programs fund cutting-edge research and technology commercialization through phased, non-dilutive grants — meaning small businesses can grow without giving up ownership.

“This is a huge opportunity for innovators,” Klemme said. “Developing a competitive SBIR application is complex — this match funding helps Kansas entrepreneurs level the playing field.”

Upcoming Event: Investing in Kansas with KC Rise Fund

Startup Hutch will also host an open event next week featuring Corey Keller from the Kansas Department of Commerce and Liam Reilly, principal and general counsel of KC Rise Fund, a venture capital firm focused on western Missouri and Kansas.

The event will explore startup investment, innovation strategy, and economic development through entrepreneurship — and offer local business owners a chance to meet investors and state-level innovation leaders.

“If you’re a Reno County business in search of venture capital, this is a must-attend,” Klemme said.

Strategic Plan Aligns Local Economic Goals

Finally, Klemme discussed the release of Reno County’s new five-pillar economic development strategic plan, developed in collaboration with the City of Hutchinson, the Chamber, Startup Hutch, and other regional partners. The plan identifies entrepreneurship as a core driver of growth and highlights data-based priorities — from addressing low wage levels to leveraging manufacturing strength and educational assets.

“This plan gives us a common framework,” Klemme said. “Everyone’s now working toward the same vision for where Hutchinson and Reno County can be in five to ten years.”

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Kansas farmers wrapping up harvest season are being urged to stay alert to crop diseases that could impact next year’s yields, according to Rodrigo Onofre, row crop plant pathologist with K-State Extension.

For soybean producers, the primary concern remains the soybean cyst nematode (SCN) — a microscopic pest responsible for the greatest yield losses in U.S. soybeans.

“The soybean cyst nematode is the number one yield-limiting pathogen of soybeans,” Onofre said. “In Kansas, we’re seeing high levels of SCN, especially in central Kansas.”

The nematode has now been identified in 64 Kansas counties, accounting for more than 85% of the state’s soybean production. Because it often causes no visible symptoms during the growing season, Onofre said it can silently rob producers of 2 to 10 bushels per acre.

“It’s a difficult pathogen to identify in the field,” he said. “Sometimes we don’t even see it during the year, but then the harvested crop is lower than usual.”

Onofre recommends testing fields for SCN soon after harvest when soil conditions are good for sampling. “It’s going to be easier for you to collect those samples and start planning for next year — either for a better variety, a rotation, or even a seed treatment, depending on your levels,” he said.

Samples can be sent to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.plantpath.k-state.edu/extension/plant-disease-diagnostic-lab">K-State Plant Diagnostic Lab in Manhattan</a>, or producers can contact their local extension agent for&nbsp;<a href="https://www.plantpath.k-state.edu/extension/plant-disease-diagnostic-lab/collection-guidelines">help submitting soil samples</a>.

Corn growers, meanwhile, face increasing challenges from tar spot — a fungal disease that has expanded its reach across Kansas in recent years.

“Tar spot has been in Kansas for three or four seasons now,” Onofre said. “We’ve seen it move toward the western and central parts of the state. That worries me a little bit because those were late-season detections.”

The disease has been especially active in northeast Kansas, but recent reports in Lincoln and Smith counties mark its westward spread. Western Kansas’ reliance on irrigation, coupled with cooler fall temperatures, can create ideal conditions for the disease to thrive.

“Producers should still be scouting for tar spot, but consider adding a corn hybrid that is resistant to tar spot,” Onofre said. “Through resistance alone, we can see yield benefits of up to 10 bushels compared to susceptible hybrids.”

He advised producers to watch for black lesions that resemble insect droppings but don’t rub off the leaf surface. Crop rotation offers limited protection, he added, so hybrid selection remains the best long-term defense. In-season fungicides may also provide benefits.

This fall’s wetter-than-average weather has also increased the risk of corn ear rots, including Diplodia, Gibberella and Aspergillus.

“Moisture is a good thing, but it brings humidity and lower temperatures, which are ideal conditions for moldy ears and potential mycotoxins,” Onofre said.

Diplodia ear rot does not produce mycotoxins, but Gibberella does — posing risks to livestock if infected corn is fed as grain or silage.

Between now and Thanksgiving Day, the donor will contribute $1 for every new Facebook follower — up to $5,000 total — to the Food Bank’s Nourishing Our Future capital campaign.

“This challenge gives everyone with a Facebook account a simple, no-cost way to make a difference,” said Angela Penner, executive director of the Food Bank of Reno County. “Every click of the ‘Follow’ button adds $1 to the campaign and helps us spread the word about the good work happening here.”

HUTCHINSON — The Reno County Board of Commissioners will meet Wednesday, November 12, with a full agenda that includes a proposed development agreement with Wifco Steel Products, Inc., participation in a state grant program for small public water systems, and discussion of commissioner compensation.

The county’s proposed development agreement with ADE-Wifco Steel Products, Inc. outlines a job-creation incentive designed to encourage the Hutchinson-based company to expand operations in Reno County. In exchange for tax or infrastructure incentives, Wifco commits to meeting specific job-creation and investment benchmarks within a defined timeframe.

The agreement includes accountability provisions — allowing the county to audit job numbers and investment levels — and claw-back clauses to recover benefits if performance goals are not met. County officials say the deal supports economic growth while protecting public funds through measurable outcomes.
