Deere and Co. has filed an answer to the Federal Trade Commission’s lawsuit.&nbsp; 

That's the lawsuit that alleged they have a monopoly over its repair services.&nbsp; The lawyers who are defending&nbsp;John&nbsp;Deere in federal court deny the allegations and say that it's nothing more than technological advancements.&nbsp; 

Farmers say that it creates headaches for those who want to fix their own tractors.&nbsp; Deere does offer a different repair tool to customers and independent repair shops.&nbsp; 

The FTC claims that version is inferior to the one available to authorized dealers and is allegedly incapable of doing all repairs on Deere equipment.&nbsp;

The district is proud to announce it once again received a grant from the Myrna B. Weeks Donor Advised fund through the Hutchinson Community Foundation. These funds will provide light refreshments for each school. In addition, each student to attend will receive a personalized kindergarten welcome bag including the book, “The Night Before Kindergarten” by Natasha Wing, a fun-filled summer skills booklet with hundreds of activities, and school supplies.

The District will implement a staggered start for all kindergarten students for all elementary schools. On August 19th, boys only will attend. On August 20th, girls only will attend. On and after August 21st, all kindergarteners will attend. USD 308 announces Kindergarten Meet and Greet events 

McPHERSON, Kan. –&nbsp;McPherson College and the University of Kansas School of Medicine are partnering to promote rural healthcare in Kansas. Over the next 12 months, this collaboration will provide students with experiential, service, and research learning opportunities.

“The collaboration will offer a wide range of opportunities for McPherson College students,” said McPherson College President Michael Schneider. “Building a partnership with the KU School of Medicine expands opportunities for our students statewide and allows us to work with KU School of Medicine admissions on joint recruitment efforts. These initiatives will help better prepare students for careers in rural healthcare.”

Together, McPherson College and KU School of Medicine’s Salina campus will explore partnerships in academic health science scholarships, rural health promotion, healthcare career development, and community health resources, including joint grant funding. The collaboration also aims to establish partnerships with the Health Occupations Students of America organization, develop new service projects, and co-host tabletop simulation events.

McPherson College students will have increased access to KU School of Medicine’s Rural Scholars and Urban Scholars programs, providing guaranteed admissions for qualified undergraduates. Additionally, faculty, staff, and students from KU’s Salina campus will visit McPherson College as guest lecturers in classes and at pre-professional organization activities. The collaboration will also facilitate connections between McPherson College undergraduate researchers and KU School of Medicine students. As part of the collaboration, KU School of Medicine will provide a scholarship for one McPherson College student to participate in mentored student research and team-teaching experiences.

“Rural healthcare is in crisis,” said Dr. Tyler Hughes, dean of the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Salina. “This collaboration is aimed at helping rural students have access to the pathway that leads to a satisfying career in the medical field. Teamwork between KU School of Medicine-Salina and liberal arts colleges in Kansas will aid in building a pipeline of excellent medical professionals for rural patients throughout our state.”&nbsp;

McPherson College’s commitment to healthcare education continues to grow. In addition to its well-established natural science program, the college launched a new Health Science program in 2020, offering academic tracks in clinical, administrative, behavioral, and community health. The college also partnered with the McPherson Center for Health to provide hands-on learning experiences in clinical and non-clinical areas of the hospital. In June 2024, McPherson College received $2.1 million in congressionally directed funding from Senator Jerry Moran to support rural and community health initiatives.

She has been in a  foster home since Friday due to her being terrified of life. 

Her foster mom tells us while in their home, she has really opened up and shown her true personality! Memphis loves belly rubs, snuggles, and playing with the other animals. 

Not only that, but in the few days they had her, she has done great with crate training, leash, training, and even learned how to sit and lay down. She is an incredibly smart dog, but will need lots of socialization to ensure that she lives a happy life!

Here in central Kansas, the drought monitor shows an area of moderate drought that reaches into southwest Kansas. &nbsp;Some areas along the state line, from Gray to Cowley County are in a zone of Severe Drought. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Portions of eastern Kansas, mainly east of the Kansas Turnpike have decreased from Moderate Drought to Abnormally dry. &nbsp;&nbsp;

TOPEKA, Kan. — More than two dozen high school seniors from Buhler, Newton, and Lyons have been honored as 2025 Kansas Career and Technical Education (CTE) Scholars by the Kansas State Department of Education. The recognition was announced at the Kansas State Board of Education meeting on April 8 in Topeka.

The Kansas CTE Scholar program honors outstanding seniors who demonstrate excellence in career and technical education through advanced coursework, community involvement, and technical skill development. Each scholar receives a commemorative pin, certificate, graduation honor cord, and is recognized statewide for their achievements.

Buhler High School (USD 313) – 13 Scholars

These students earned distinction for their work in either Animal Science or Power, Structural and Technical Systems pathways:

Newton High School seniors earned honors across a wide range of CTE pathways, including health science, engineering, digital media, and more:

RENO COUNTY, Kan - This Sunday and Monday, April 13th&nbsp;and 14th, 2025. trained volunteers will be out in select neighborhoods across Reno County collecting input from residents through a survey as part of the 2025 Community Health Assessment (CHA).

Conducted every three years, the Community Health Assessment is a collaborative effort to evaluate the overall health and well-being of Reno County residents. The results will help shape health programs and services provided by local health partners, including Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, the Reno County Health Department, Horizons Mental Health Center, and PrairieStar Health Center. These organizations, in collaboration with the Reno County Community Wellness Coalition, rely on CHA data to identify pressing health needs and direct resources effectively.

The data gathered also helps inform the community about the challenges residents face and the ongoing efforts to address them and improve overall well-being in Reno County.

This year’s assessment uses a rapid needs assessment model to collect household-level data. In total, 30 census blocks have been randomly selected, with seven households targeted in each block—yielding 210 total survey responses. Volunteer teams of two will visit assigned addresses to ask residents to complete a short survey and engage in a brief conversation about health in the spaces where they live, learn, work, and play.

As a thank-you for their time and insights, each participating household will receive a $25 gift card to either Dillons or Amazon.

A Wednesday afternoon car crash sent two people to the hospital &nbsp;

According to the Hutchinson Police department they responded to an injury accident at 2nd and Adams Steet shortly after 1 p.m.. &nbsp;

Upon arrival emergency personnel discovered a 1991 Mazda Miata had left the roadway and struck a traffic signal and a brick wall. &nbsp;The Miata driven by Christopher Roberts age 21 of Hutchinson along with a passenger were transported to Hutchinson Regional Hospital. &nbsp;The passenger was later transported to a Wichita Hospital for their injuries.&nbsp;

The investigation into this accident is ongoing and anyone who may have information on this accident is asked to call the Hutchinson Police Department and ask for Officer L Hammond or J Gilmore at (620) 694-2854. &nbsp;

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of West 17th and Halsey Drive.

Around 1960, the Dillons Co. decided to get into the convenience store business.

After building its first Hutchinson Kwik Shop at 507 E. 30th Ave., it built its second Kwik Shop at 1008 W. 17th Ave. in 1965 and Robert Shank was made the manager. The only thing at this location previously was Margaret's Place at 4 Halsey Drive. The first photo shows Kwik Shop with its 32-cent gas pumps, another new idea, right about 1970.

In 1973, the address assignment was changed to 2 Halsey Drive.

In 1980, this location was closed and the Kwik Shop was rebuilt at 1701 N. Monroe St.

In 1992, Bob Lyon purchased the building and remodeled it to become the Lyon Home Center. The second photo shows the home center in its heyday about 1998.

The last business listing for the Lyon Home Center was in 2003, with no business yet to replace it. The third photo shows the building and property today at 2 Halsey Drive, still owned by Jesse Robert Lyon.

NEWTON, Kan. — Harvey County RSVP has been awarded a $75,000 grant from AmeriCorps Seniors to expand its volunteer services across the community in fiscal year 2025.

AmeriCorps is the federal agency for national service and volunteerism. The funding will support RSVP’s efforts to strengthen local food security, aid nonprofits, and increase volunteerism among residents age 55 and older.

“We’re delighted to be selected as an AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP grant recipient. It’s a rigorously competitive process,” said Lona Kelly, director of the Harvey County Department on Aging. “RSVP is committed to the support of volunteers across Harvey County who commit their time and talents and strengthen the capacity of the community.”

The grant will help RSVP volunteers deliver meals, shop for the homebound, and provide service support for area food banks, charities and nonprofit organizations.

“These programs empower adults over 55 to gain valuable skills through service,” said RSVP Coordinator Mary Wilson. “It increases their ability to return to the workforce or share their passion and purpose by volunteering in the Harvey County community.”

Harvey County RSVP has provided Healthy Futures projects locally since 1983.

AmeriCorps Seniors programs operate nationwide, helping meet local needs, promoting civic engagement and empowering older adults to improve lives and communities.

SEDGWICK, Kan. — Two unauthorized individuals gained access to a Sedgwick school building on Tuesday afternoon, prompting a swift response from staff and law enforcement, according to USD 439 Superintendent Dr. Rae Niles.

In a message sent to parents and guardians, Niles said the incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. when two men entered a school building through a side door. A high school senior working as a student aide initially turned the pair away at the grade school entrance, instructing them to go to the high school’s main entrance. The men then spent nearly an hour wandering school grounds before being let in by a student through a side door.

Once inside, the men ended up in the school courtyard, where Mavis, the district’s therapy dog, alerted staff to their presence. Librarian Leah Gaede spotted the intruders and contacted elementary principal Julie Scott, who escorted them to the high school office before they were removed from the building.

“There could have been a far worse outcome, but it was a frightening situation nonetheless,” Niles wrote.

Authorities later identified the two men, who were located at their home in Park City. Niles said they are not connected to the Sedgwick community and have never attended school there. The district worked with local police to issue trespass orders against both individuals. Photos of the men have been distributed to staff and posted in school offices.

Emergency staff meetings were held Wednesday morning to reinforce security protocols and remind employees of the importance of reporting unauthorized individuals. Students were also briefed on safety practices, including the district’s “See Something, Say Something” policy.

Niles emphasized that the district will be reviewing and strengthening safety procedures in the coming weeks and thanked families for their continued support.

“We know we can always do better,” she said. “Keeping your child safe is our top priority.”

Unauthorized entry at Sedgwick school prompts security response, policy review

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County commissioners have officially declared April 6–12 as Crime Victims’ Rights Week, highlighting the importance of community support and connection in helping survivors heal.

Board chair Don Bogner read the proclamation during Wednesday’s meeting in the Reno County Courthouse, emphasizing the theme of “kinship” as a vital foundation in victim advocacy. He noted that kinship builds bridges to services, fosters resilience, and creates pathways to healing for those affected by crime.

The proclamation reaffirmed the county’s commitment to trauma-informed care, community alliances, and ongoing efforts to strengthen the criminal justice response. It also recognized the dedication of local service providers, advocates, and law enforcement professionals working to support victims year-round.

Following the proclamation, Reno County District Attorney Tom Stanton spoke about the importance of recognizing and protecting the rights of crime victims across the justice system.

“I appreciate very much the board recognizing Victims’ Rights Week,” Stanton said. “In this county, we have striven for years and years to protect victims. We look a lot of times towards victims of the most serious crimes, but my office protects victims from businesses who experience thefts, all the way up to the families of those who are murdered.”

Stanton also acknowledged several members of his staff who were present at the meeting and highlighted their work with victims.

“With me today is my Deputy District Attorney Andy Davidson, and Sarah McReynolds, our victim rights coordinator, who sets up meetings regularly for me and other attorneys in the office with victims so we can discuss their cases and they can have personal input,” he said.

He went on to address the broader challenges victims face in the court system.

“Victims’ rights are often put aside in the court system,” Stanton said. “We have a system that is designed to protect the defendant — and rightfully so, that’s what our Constitution demands of us — but we also have a system that allows victims oftentimes to be underserved or be ridiculed just for being victims. We fight vigorously against that, and we hope the community will support us in our efforts to protect the rights of victims.”

Stanton closed by inviting the public to take part in a local observance of Crime Victims’ Rights Week.

“I would like to invite everyone here, especially the commission and the members of Reno County, to our candlelight lighting service tomorrow at 6:30 at the South Hutchinson Community Center — that’s at 101 W. Ave. C in South Hutch,” he said. “I have been honored by the presence of members of the commission coming to this before and I really appreciate those of you who take time to do that. RENO COUNTY — Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire at a rural home in Reno County.

Just before 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, crews responded to a fire in the 1600 block of North Wilson Road, according to a media release from Jeremy Unruh, division chief of operations with the Hutchinson Fire Department.

First-arriving crews found a single-story home with heavy fire involvement. A detached garage and a 28-foot camper were also fully engulfed. Firefighters began a defensive attack, and rural water supply operations were initiated with help from mutual aid water tenders.

Crews were eventually able to knock down most of the fire and enter the home. No one was home at the time. The garage and camper were a total loss, and the fire damaged approximately 70% of the house. Wind was a significant factor in the fire’s behavior. No injuries were reported.

Adopt a Furry Friend: Bird

RENO COUNTY, Kan. — One person was injured in a two-vehicle crash just after 6 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2005 Dodge Dakota driven by Noah Jeffrey Edwards, 26, of Republic, Missouri, was westbound on Kansas 96 about one mile east of Yoder Road when it rear-ended a 2014 Honda Accord driven by Zandre DeBeer Wiggins, 29, of Hutchinson. Both vehicles traveled into the north ditch after the impact.

A passenger in the Dodge, Sara Elizabeth Muzzy, 35, of Hutchinson, was taken by EMS to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.

Neither driver was injured. Both were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

RENO COUNTY, Kan. — One person was injured in a two-vehicle crash just after 6 p.m. Tuesday.According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2005 Dodge Dakota driven by Noah Jeffrey Edwards, 26, of Republic, Missouri, was westbound on Kansas 96 about one mile east of Yoder Road when it rear-ended a 2014 Honda Accord driven by Zandre DeBeer Wiggins, 29, of Hutchinson. Both vehicles traveled into the north ditch after the impact.A passenger in the Dodge, Sara Elizabeth Muzzy, 35, of Hutchinson, was taken by EMS to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.Neither driver was injured. Both were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The grant through FHLBank Topeka’s Affordable Housing Program (AHP), which is made in partnership with FHLBank Topeka’s member financial institutions, will make improvements to 20 homes in Sterling and Alden, Kansas. The funds will improve the livability of qualifying owner-occupied homes in the two communities. Qualified applicants must be at or below the set household income limit as specified in the full application.

“Providing these grants through our members each year is a cornerstone of our mission," said Jeff Kuzbel, President and CEO of FHLBank. "The commitment of FHLBank members and the innovative spirit of community builders across our district are showcased by the diverse projects receiving funding.” He continued, “This year’s AHP projects will profoundly impact many lives."

Each year, FHLBank Topeka allocates 10% of its prior year’s earnings to AHP. Nonprofit groups, for-profit developers, government agencies and public entities apply for the grants for rental and owner-occupied housing projects through an FHLBank member like First Bank.

“We could not have done this without our community partners. The cities of Alden and Sterling, Interfaith Housing, and Clelia McCrory have played an integral part in moving this grant forward and improving housing options,” said Jeﬀ Laudermilk, President of First Bank.

Interfaith Housing seeks to alleviate poverty and build community through housing assistance, financial education and individual empowerment. They do this by providing people with the knowledge and tools to achieve financial self-sufficiency and access to housing that is affordable to their level of income, their level of need and where they can live in safety with dignity.

“We are thrilled to partner with First Bank Sterling and to participate as the sponsor and general contractor for this AHP award,” said Clint Nelson, President and CEO of Interfaith Housing. Interfaith’s goal is to support communities in evaluating their housing strategies and assisting through tailored housing revitalization actions.

Reno County Commission to discuss solar regulations, among other items Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 57th annual Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale is set for Friday and Saturday at the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

The event raises money for the Mennonite Central Committee, a Christian relief and development organization founded in 1920 that supports communities in need across North America and around the world.

“The last couple of years we’ve been able to top $600,000,” said Jim Robb, board chair. “A few years ago, because of some of the donations we had at that point, we were able to donate over $700,000 to Mennonite Central Committee.”

Funds raised go toward MCC-supported missions in 45 countries, including the United States and Canada.

A major draw of the event is the food, with more than 35,000 New Year’s cookies and 17,000 verenike made by nearly 1,000 volunteers.

Robb said estimating attendance has become difficult, though there was once a method.

“Years ago, when the cars came in, there would be people who had a clicker and they would count the cars,” he said. “Then they would multiply by three, and that was how they determined the attendance. We don’t do that anymore, so it’s really hard to tell.”

The two-day event features live music, children’s activities, and five auctions.

“One of those is the general auction, which also has an online component,” Robb said. “That starts at 8:45 a.m. Saturday. We also have a preview auction Friday night at 6 p.m. that lasts about an hour.”

More than 200 quilts will be sold during the quilt auction, which also begins at 8:45 a.m. Saturday. A children’s auction will be held in the Pride of Kansas Building, alongside kid-friendly activities.

“We hope that the children will gain an understanding of auctions and learn that the money helps someone else,” Robb said.

The sale is organized by a 24-member board representing communities and churches across the state.

“They come from a wide range of areas,” Robb said. “We’ve had members from as far south as Harper County, and from places like Topeka, Reno, Harvey, McPherson and Saline counties. Some represent churches, others represent communities — it’s a diverse group.”

Robb is not sure how many attendees they will have, but shared a story of how they used to figure the attendance.
