This week marks the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026. There is no denying that 2025 has been a year we will never forget. Some of us would like to forget 2025 and others have had a good year. Yes, I am talking about the difference between those of us who raise crops and those of us who have cattle. It has been a year of extremes.

However, whether you liked it or hated it, 2025 is in the rearview mirror and 2026 is dead ahead. What will 2026 bring us? Who knows? It is an election year These elections have a lot riding on the line, and your involvement is critical for agriculture.

If you are a member of Voters Organized to Elect Farm Bureau Friends (VOTE FBF), thank you and now is the time to start researching the candidates in your area so you can have an informed opinion about which candidate could help agriculture the most. If you have not yet contributed to VOTE FBF, I would encourage you to do so right now and you can make your voice heard when the County Evaluation Committee or CEC meets and chooses candidates to support.

Every member’s opinion is important when the VOTE FBF board makes its selections both for the primary and for the general election. We know that increasingly farmers and ranchers are becoming a smaller and smaller portion of the population, so it is important that we band together to have a louder voice.

Agriculture is the largest industry in Kansas, and it is critical that we elect officials who understand agriculture and the importance of what we do. We need officials who are at least receptive to hear the message Kansas Farm Bureau brings to the Capitol, both in Topeka and Washington D.C.

That all starts with you being involved with the individuals we send to represent us. We must get to know them before they are elected, and it is just as important that they know who the members of Kansas Farm Bureau are too.

VOTE FBF has a tremendous history of backing winners in the election. That is because the recommendations come from our county Farm Bureaus, not the top down. Each county has the opportunity to submit their recommendations, and they carry a great deal of weight when VOTE FBF makes endorsements.

Now, over the coming months, take the time to meet the candidates and understand where they stand, especially on issues affecting farming and ranching. Make sure your CEC knows how you feel and then watch for the VOTE FBF endorsed candidates both before the primary election and again before the general election.

I am proud to be part of an organization that puts so much emphasis on decisions at the grassroots level. That is why candidates prize the endorsement of VOTE FBF so much, it truly is from the electors themselves. Again, I urge you to contribute, do your homework and take part in the CEC process and help determine who we send to Topeka and D.C. As we turn the calendar and start an election year, our work isas important now as it has ever been.

Kansas farmers are facing one of the most difficult economic periods in years, even after producing record crops during the 2025 growing season, according to U.S. Senator Jerry Moran.

Moran said timely precipitation last summer led to exceptional yields across much of the state, particularly for grain sorghum and corn. Producers in western Kansas reported especially large milo crops following years of persistent drought. While the rainfall created an ideal growing season, the resulting surplus has created new challenges.

“The output costs are less than the input costs,” Moran said, explaining that while crops were plentiful, the cost of producing them has skyrocketed. Fertilizer, fuel, seed, and other inputs remain high, while commodity prices have dropped due to excess supply. As a result, farmers are often selling crops at a loss.

Moran said that in his years representing Kansas producers, current conditions rank among the most difficult he has seen. He noted that the strong harvest followed three to five years of significant drought across much of the state, leaving farmers financially weakened and ill-positioned to withstand another tough year.

“Farmers are not in a position financially to take on more difficulty,” Moran said, adding that weakened balance sheets make it harder for producers to secure financing from lenders.

The senator also pointed to the loss of international markets as a major contributor to the crisis. Kansas produces far more agricultural commodities than it can consume domestically, making exports critical to farm profitability. Moran highlighted the absence of China as a buyer, particularly for grain sorghum and soybeans.

Kansas is the nation’s leading producer of grain sorghum, and China was once a major purchaser. However, Moran said China has shifted its buying to Brazil, and without regaining that market, it is difficult to see how global demand can absorb Kansas’ surplus production.

Moran said federal officials are working to address the issue through trade negotiations. He chairs a committee that funds the U.S. trade ambassador and said hearings have focused on reaching agreements that would reopen markets for American agricultural products.

In addition to trade efforts, Moran said renewable fuels could provide an additional outlet for Kansas crops. He also pointed to global hunger programs as another opportunity, saying surplus grain should be used to help feed people worldwide rather than sitting unused in Kansas.

“We don’t want grain piled on the ground in Kansas while people are starving around the globe,” Moran said.

Ultimately, Moran said resolving trade disputes and securing agreements that allow U.S. agriculture to compete globally is essential to restoring farm profitability.

“The goal has to be to sell,” he said. “We need trade agreements that allow us to sell what we produce here in Kansas and across the country.”

City Desk is designed to give residents a relaxed setting to visit one-on-one with City Commissioners and city staff, ask questions, share feedback, or simply stop by to say hello. The series emphasizes accessibility, transparency, and meaningful engagement by meeting residents where they already are—out in the community.

The 2026 City Desk schedule begins Friday, January 16, with the first stop at the Newton Public Library, located at 223 E. 7th Street, from 10 to 11 a.m.

Three-day Outlook

It’s a New Years question etched in dichotomous reflection as we find ourselves thinking back and looking ahead at the same time. A conundrum summed up by When Harry Met Sally’s Harry Burns (aka Billy Crystal) “Does that mean we should forget old acquaintances? Or does it mean that if we happened to forget them, we should remember them, which is not possible because we already forgot ‘em?”

As we reflect on Kansas political affairs circa 2025, these four notable “acquaintances” caught my eye as maybe something we should have forgotten.

· Property Tax Cuts (cough) – The Kansas Legislature leadership had made property tax cuts the first, second, and third priority of the 2025 session. By the end of the session, they had saved a $200,000 homeowner $35 in property taxes and passed the largest income tax cut since Brownback. Furthermore, any future budget savings are dedicated to lowering income taxes until it hits 4%. Gov. Laura Kelly proclaimed this switcheroo the “kiss of death for the Kansas budget”. Meanwhile, a November legislative post audit found substantial underfunding of counties for mandated state services like elections, law enforcement, and motor vehicle registration which Counties primarily funded with…you guessed it…property taxes.

· Gerrymander Fever – Was there a more undemocratic contagion threatening the sovereignty of states than the presidentially induced re-districting for partisan control of the U.S. House? Kansas statehouse legislative leaders – Ty Masterson and Dan Hawkins – caught the fever boldly proclaiming their desire to gerrymander Kansas’ only Democratic congressional representative (Sharice Davids) out of existence in a special session. The fever was broken by a handful of inoculated GOP House members only to be petulantly banished by Hawkins to the political equivalent of Siberia. But Masterson, a GOP candidate for governor, has vowed to rally a veto-proof supermajority in 2026. Gov. Kelly says its unpopular with Kansans.

· Town Hall Flex – The federal government wasn’t the only thing shut down in 2025. In March, videos surfaced of U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall ending his own town hall early in Oakley after calling the crowd “one of the rudest audiences I’ve ever had” and being pressed on health care for veterans in light of massive DOGE cuts. Sen. Marshall didn’t answer. He walked out. Town halls are not political rallies. It’s one of the few

chances our elected officials in Washington get to face the people they serve. Listening is their job. Contrast this with Kelly’s People’s Budget listening tour which drew mockery from Speaker Hawkins. Marshall is up for re-election in 2026. Hawkins is running for Insurance Commissioner.

· Farm Blues – It’s been a rough 2025 for the Kansas farmer. First, DOGE put USAID and Food for Peace through the woodchipper, decimating wheat farmer exports without warning. Thanks to Sen. Moran, Food for Peace was re-appropriated $1.2 billion in 2026. Secondly, farmers became entangled in President Trump’s tariff/trade wars. China finally resumed soybean and sorghum commitments late this fall which is important to Kansas as the leading sorghum-producing state ($1.1 billion in exports). A $12 billion federal bridge payment for farmers softened these self-inflicted “market disruptions” but stands as a conspicuous indictment of federal ag policies and the first of more bailouts.

Let’s raise a cup of kindness to these “acquaintances” and in the words of Sally Albright (aka Meg Ryan), “…remember that we forgot them.” Or would like to.

Darrin Truan to Take Seat on Hutchinson City Council Next Week

A new face will join the Hutchinson City Council next week as Darrin Truan prepares to be sworn in as the city’s at-large council member.

Truan was elected in November and will officially take his seat during the council’s first meeting of the year, scheduled for Tuesday evening. The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at Hutchinson City Hall.

Truan brings 24 years of local law enforcement experience to the council, having retired from the Hutchinson Police Department in July 2024. He moved to Hutchinson in 2000 to join the department and raised his family in the community.

“I’ve lived and worked here for a long time,” Truan said during a recent interview on the BW Morning Show. “Hutchinson has been home, and I’m excited to give back in a new way.”

During his campaign, Truan emphasized what he called the “three P’s” as his top priorities: public safety, potholes, and plumbing. He said those issues represent the core responsibilities of city government.

“We have to take care of the necessities first,” Truan said. “Fire and police services, our streets, and our water and sewer infrastructure are critical to the city’s success.”

Truan said his years in law enforcement gave him firsthand experience with many of the challenges the city faces, particularly in public safety and infrastructure-related issues. He believes that background will help inform policy decisions at City Hall.

One of his stated goals is improving how the city works with residents and businesses, particularly when it comes to permits, zoning, and development.

“I’ve heard from a lot of people that the city can be quick to say no,” Truan said. “I think we can take more time to look at issues and see how we can help people move projects forward while still following the rules.”

Truan acknowledged he still has much to learn about city processes and plans to spend time working with city staff and the planning commission to better understand how decisions are made and where improvements may be possible.

Water and sewer infrastructure — and the rate increases tied to those improvements — have been a major topic at City Hall over the past several months. Truan said communication with the public will be key moving forward.

“I really encourage people to come to council meetings,” he said. “There’s public comment at the beginning of meetings and on agenda items. Attending meetings or watching them online helps people understand what it takes to run the city.”

Truan also said he plans to remain accessible to residents. He noted that council members’ contact information is available on the city’s website and that he is active on social media and will soon have an official city email address available.

As Hutchinson continues to see new housing developments and major projects such as the Evergy plant, Truan said cooperation between the City of Hutchinson, South Hutchinson, and Reno County will be important.

“No matter where development happens, it benefits the entire area,” he said. “We all need to work together.”

Truan said he is grateful for the support he received during the election and is eager to begin his term.

The Quadrantid meteor shower peaks Friday night into Saturday morning,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.amsmeteors.org/meteor-showers/meteor-shower-calendar/#Quadrantids">according to the American Meteor Society</a>. In dark skies during the peak, skygazers typically see around 25 meteors per hour, but this time they'll likely glimpse less than 10 per hour due to light from Saturday's supermoon.

“The biggest enemy of enjoying a meteor shower is the full moon,” said Mike Shanahan, planetarium director at Liberty Science Center in New Jersey.

Meteor showers happen when speedy space rocks collide with Earth’s atmosphere, burning up and leaving fiery tails in their wake — the end of a “shooting star.” A handful of meteors are visible on any given night, but predictable showers appear annually when Earth passes through dense streams of cosmic debris.

Supermoons occur when a full moon is closer to Earth in its orbit. That makes it appear up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter than the faintest moon of the year, according to NASA. That difference can be tough to notice with the naked eye.

Supermoons, like all full moons, are visible in clear skies everywhere that it's night. The Quadrantids, on the other hand, can be seen mainly from the Northern Hemisphere. Both can be glimpsed without any special equipment.

To spot the Quadrantids, venture out in the early evening away from city lights and watch for fireballs before the moon crashes the party, said Jacque Benitez with the Morrison Planetarium at the California Academy of Sciences. Skygazers can also try looking during early dawn hours on Sunday.

Wait for your eyes to get used to the darkness, and don’t look at your phone. The space rocks will look like fast-moving white dots and appear over the whole sky.

Meteor showers are named for the constellation where the fireballs appear to come from. The Quadrantids — space debris from the asteroid 2003 EH1 — are named for a constellation that's no longer recognized.

The next major meteor shower, called the Lyrids, is slotted for April.

The Farm Service Agency is offering youth loans to help young people establish and operate agricultural income-producing projects through 4-H, FFA, and other approved agricultural organizations.

The program is designed to give youth hands-on experience in planning, managing, and operating a small agricultural business while developing financial and leadership skills. Projects must be conducted under the guidance of an organization advisor and structured to generate enough income to repay the loan.

Youth loans may be used for a variety of modest agricultural projects, including livestock, crop production, equipment, or other approved enterprises tied to a supervised program of work. The maximum loan amount available through the program is $10,000.

To qualify, applicants must be between 10 and 20 years of age and either be a U.S. citizen or a legal resident alien. Applicants must also meet general FSA eligibility requirements and demonstrate the ability to manage the project with guidance from an approved project advisor. A project supervisor is required to recommend the youth loan applicant and provide ongoing supervision throughout the project.

Local assistance is available through the Reno County USDA Service Center, which can help families and advisors prepare and submit application forms.

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran says a new $222 million infusion of federal funding will provide critical relief for Kansas hospitals and help keep rural communities viable across the state.

During a recent interview, Moran discussed visits to hospitals in Russell and Belleville, where administrators echoed what he has heard statewide: Kansas hospitals are financially fragile, and the new funding arrives at a pivotal moment.

The dollars come through the Rural Health Transformation Act, included in the federal reconciliation package addressing Medicaid policy. Moran said lawmakers were concerned that changes to Medicaid reimbursement could further strain already vulnerable rural hospitals.

“I don’t think there’s a hospital in Kansas that’s not fragile,” Moran said. “The finances of our health care system are fragile as well. We were looking for ways to make certain that hospitals in our state did not suffer significant consequences financially.”

Moran said he advocated strongly for the program and pushed to ensure it did not require a state match — a key provision, he noted, that allows Kansas to fully access the funds. The state is expected to receive $222 million this year, with similar amounts projected annually for the next five years.

Those resources, Moran said, should help keep hospital doors open across Kansas, though he cautioned the funding will not make hospitals flush with cash.

“No hospital is going to be swimming in money,” he said. “But it’s certainly going to make staying in business and keeping the doors open a bit easier.”

Moran emphasized that health care access and agriculture are inseparable pillars of rural Kansas. Without hospitals, he said, communities risk losing pharmacies, businesses, and families.

“If our hospital doors close, there’s no pharmacy on Main Street,” Moran said. “Young families won’t take the chance of raising their kids where there’s not access to health care, and senior citizens are often told they need to move where there’s a doctor and a hospital.”

He pointed to western Kansas communities where struggling farm economies combined with hospital closures could accelerate population decline.

“Often the hospital is the largest employer in a small town,” Moran said. “So the consequences ripple through the entire community.”

Moran said preserving rural hospitals and supporting a strong farm economy have long been central to his work in Washington, dating back to conversations he has had with Kansas broadcasters and constituents over many years.

“A significant component of why I asked for this job was to fight to keep rural Kansas — rural America — alive and well,” Moran said. “At the top of the list is access to health care and a successful farm economy. Those two things determine whether towns like my hometown of Plainville, and communities across Kansas, have a future.”

Moran said he will continue working to ensure the funding produces the intended results and helps strengthen rural Kansas in the years ahead.

“We want to grow Kansas and make sure the entire state has a bright future,” he said. “These two topics — health care and agriculture — really help determine whether that happens.”

But farmers say the aid&nbsp;won't solve all their problems&nbsp;as they continue to deal with the soaring costs of fertilizer, seeds and labor that make it hard to turn a profit right now. Some agricultural trade groups have said they worry that thousands of farmers could go out of business, but others have said they believe most farmers have the financial resources and equity needed to survive.

Kentucky soybean farmer Caleb Ragland, who was president of the American Soybean Association until recently, said the aid is “a Band-Aid on a deep wound. We need competition and opportunities in the market to make our future brighter.”

The President of the National Corn Growers Association Jed Bower also urged the Trump administration to focus on cultivating additional uses for their crops. Farmers will benefit from having more buyers whether it is for ethanol and animal feed at home or for international markets.

“Corn growers have been sounding the alarm about the fact that farmers have been faced with multiple consecutive years of low corn prices and high input costs,” Bower said. “While this financial assistance is helpful and welcomed, we urgently need the administration and Congress to develop markets in the United States and abroad that will provide growers with more long-term economic certainty.”

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said that is the goal and promised to continue working to open new markets while strengthening the safety net for farmers.

Minnesota Soybean Growers Association President Darin Johnson said the aid number for soybeans fell short of what farmers had been hoping for, so more help could be needed, though this package will help.

Most farmers remain steadfast supporters of Trump even after the disruptions caused by the trade war. They generally support many of his other policies and believe they will get a better trade deal in the end.

White House and farmers encouraged by China's purchases

These aid payments will add up to $11 billion for row crop farmers who raise corn, soybeans, wheat, sorghum and other crops. Another $1 billion has been set aside for specialty crops and sugar, but the administration hasn't released any details of aid for those crops.

After Trump met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in South Korea in October, the White House said Beijing had promised to buy at least 12 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans by the end of the calendar year, plus 25 million metric tons a year in each of the next three years. Officials have said China is on track to meet the 12 million metric ton goal by the end of February.

As of Dec. 18, China had bought about 6 million metric tons of soybeans, according to the latest USDA’s weekly report. Separately, the federal agency reported that China since then bought at least three more batches totaling 600,000 metric tons.

Beijing has yet to confirm any commitment to buying 12 million metric tons of soybeans for this season, but the Chinese embassy in Washington said earlier this month that “agricultural trade cooperation between China and the United States is proceeding in an orderly manner.”

However, the recent increase in international purchases is encouraging to farmers, said Tim Lust, CEO of the National Sorghum Producers, who has seen more than 1 million metric tons of sorghum purchased in just the past few weeks. Like soybeans, more than half of the sorghum crop is exported each year with China traditionally being the biggest buyer.

The aid payments will be capped at $155,000 per farmer or entity, and only farms that make less than $900,000 in adjusted gross income will be eligible. During the first Trump administration, a number of large farms found ways around the payment limits and&nbsp;collected millions.

The USDA says&nbsp;the average size&nbsp;of the 1.88 million farms nationwide was 466 acres last year, but many farmers are much larger than that as larger operations have continued to buy up neighboring farms over time.

FHSU and Kansas Community Colleges announce guaranteed admission program in psychology

The year began with a landmark agreement expanding access to higher education across the state. I was joined by Kansas Association of Community Colleges Director Heather Morgan and leaders from all 19 Kansas community colleges to sign a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a guaranteed admission pathway into FHSU’s clinical and school psychology programs.

Students completing an associate degree at a Kansas community college can now transition seamlessly into FHSU bachelor’s programs—and, uniquely, the guarantee extends through the master’s degree level for both clinical and school psychology, provided GPA requirements are met. The initiative directly addresses workforce shortages in mental health and education while removing barriers for students seeking advanced degrees in critical service professions.

Applied Technology achieves 100 percent graduate job placement

FHSU’s Department of Applied Technology has reached a milestone that speaks volumes about its hands-on approach to education: a 100 percent graduate job placement rate. Department Chair Kim Stewart credited the achievement to long-standing partnerships with industry and a robust internship requirement embedded in the curriculum.

With nine credit hours of internships, roughly equivalent to two summers of professional experience, students graduate not only with degrees but with practical skills, employer connections, and real-world readiness. For a department that has consistently hovered near a 98 percent placement rate, the milestone reinforced FHSU’s reputation as a workforce-driven institution.

Ben Schears named Vice President for Economic and Workforce Development

Leadership for economic growth took a major step forward when Ben Schears, president of Fort Hays Tech | Northwest, was named FHSU’s Vice President for Economic and Workforce Development. In this role, Schears leads efforts to align education, innovation, and workforce needs across the region.

In the opening months that Schear has served in this role, he has worked with Strategic Affiliation partner Fort Hays Tech | North Central to assist High Plains Mental Health and Fort Hays Tech | North Central in addressing the workforce needs associated with their expanding operations. Now in the works is a new associate’s degree program at Fort Hays Tech | North Central that will help High Plains Mental Health staff entry-level positions. The goal of this partnership is to create seamless educational pathways that enable students to earn and learn as they advance in their careers.

Under his leadership, FHSU was selected to serve as one of six entities in the Heartland Rural Innovators Initiative hosted by the Center on Rural Innovation (CORI). Sponsored by the Patterson Family Foundation, the initiative aims to create local efforts that focus on closing the growing gap in tech sector jobs in rural America. The effort will consolidate existing assets across Ellis County to create a robust entrepreneurial ecosystem that supports tech sector jobs.

Grace McCord Selected as a Finalist in Truman Scholar Competition

Fort Hays State University Political Science major Grace McCord was selected as one of just 200 finalists in the national competition for the Truman Scholarship, selected from 800 highly accomplished applicants nominated by their universities. Truman Scholars are college juniors chosen for their commitment to pursuing a career in public service. Truman Scholars receive a scholarship for graduate study funded by the Truman Foundation, which was created to honor the values of President Harry S. Truman.

Grace served her community through a number of service projects, including work with Jana’s Campaign and the Celebration Community Church Quilting Ministry, among other activities. In her career at FHSU, she has led the American Democracy Project and served as a senator in the Student Government Association, where she currently serves as the Legislative Affairs Director, as well as holding leadership roles in the Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honor Society and her sorority, Alpha Gamma Delta.

Dr. Lisa Goddard McGuirk named athletic director

Dr. Lisa Goddard McGuirk joined FHSU as its new Athletic Director, bringing with her a national reputation for excellence in Division II athletics. Previously serving as athletic director at Gannon University, she was named NCAA Division II Athletic Director of the Year in 2024.

Under her leadership, Gannon achieved top national rankings in the Learfield Directors’ Cup, a benchmark of athletic and academic success. At FHSU, Goddard McGuirk’s arrival marked a new chapter for Tiger Athletics, one focused on competitive excellence, student-athlete success, and national visibility.

Business Retention and Expansion Program launches regional pilot

Professional and Continuing Education at FHSU launched an innovative pilot program designed to strengthen local economies through business retention and expansion strategies. This initiative was led by representatives from FHSU, Fort Hays Tech | North Central, and Fort Hays Tech |Northwest. Class cohorts were formed in Beloit, Goodland, and Hays, and participants included leaders from business, government, education, and economic development. The program curriculum focused on applying practical tools to support community growth. This initiative highlighted the power of regional collaboration and FHSU’s leadership role in rural economic development.

Corey Isbell named president of Fort Hays Tech | Northwest

Corey Isbell, Ed.D., was named president of Fort Hays Tech | Northwest, succeeding Ben Schears. With more than 25 years of experience in technical education across rural Kansas, Isbell brought a deep understanding of workforce training, student success, and community engagement.

His appointment ensured continuity and momentum within the Fort Hays State system, reinforcing strong partnerships between FHSU and technical education institutions across the region.

FHSU Stroup Hall breaks ground to expand nursing program

On August 21, Fort Hays State University broke ground on a $15.4 million project to expand Stroup Hall. The project will add 30,000 additional square feet and unite the Departments of Nursing and Allied Health under one roof. This expansion will allow the two departments to collaborate more closely in training the next generation of students. Funded by the Kansas Legislature, the new Stroup Hall will include simulation labs, updated classrooms, and hands-on training opportunities, with completion expected in December 2026.
