HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Fire Department responded to 3012 Sierra Parkway at 1:35 p.m. Saturday for an apartment fire. 

Units found heavy smoke pushing out of the eaves of a two-story apartment complex. Crews made an interior attack and found fire in the attic area. Crews searched the four apartments locating one individual in one of the non-involved apartments. This person was treated by EMS at the scene for a minor injury.

Moderate damage was sustained to one apartment, one apartment suffered water damage and the other two apartments had minor smoke damage. All four apartments are inhabitable. 

Red Cross was called in to assist the residents. Fire investigators are currently working to determine a cause.

Hutchinson Fire Department was assisted by Reno County EMS, Hutchinson Police Department, Hutchinson-Reno-County Emergency Communication, Evergy, and Kansas Gas Service.

Hutch Fire battles apartment fire Saturday

HARVEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 9 a.m. Saturday in Harvey County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Chevy Cruze driven by Andrea McCurter, 48, Raymore, Missouri, was&nbsp;&nbsp;southbound on Interstate 135 six miles south of Newton.

The car struck a deer that entered the roadway causing airbag deployment.

EMS transported a passenger Erik McCurter, 36, Raymore, Missouri to Wesley Medical Center. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP. The driver was not injured.&nbsp;

Man hospitalized after car, deer crash on I-135

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Nancy Swain, current General Manager at EAGLE Media in Hutchinson, and future General Manager, Matt Althouse attended a lunch at Hutchinson Community College on Friday, October 20th&nbsp;to meet a group of Schmidt Foundation Scholarship recipients. 

These students were chosen to receive scholarships from the Schmidt Foundation through guidelines which include maintaining a great GPA.&nbsp;

“Bob and Pat Schmidt always enjoyed seeing young people succeed and their Foundation continues to provide that support for this group of students,” said Foundation President Gary Shorman.

"It was exciting to see such a fine group of young people who are working hard to achieve their goals," Swain said. "The excitement they expressed towards their fields of study and enthusiasm for Hutchinson Community College was refreshing to see! Matt and I were honored to meet each student and encourage them to continue pursuing their dreams! Hutchinson Community College is a great school and a wonderful place to begin your education!"

EAGLE Media management meets with Schmidt Foundation Scholarship recipients

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — There are just a few days left to contribute to Ineeda Cleaners Coats for Kids drive this year. The donations will be delivered to the Hutchinson Salvation Army.

"Just clean out those closets," said Rachel Nelson. "Check your kids rooms. Check the back of your car. Anything you are not using we want to find a home for it."

Nelson said the store will take donations until Oct. 31 but would like to wrap up the donation process by Oct. 27. She said Ineeda Cleaners does not have a total count on donations.&nbsp;

"I can say that it started off really strong this year with a really high number of drop offs that first ten days," Nelson said. "We felt like we were getting a really good selection and a lot of nice kids coats, so it's going well as far as good quality items coming in, so that's been a nice blessing so far."&nbsp;

Ineeda has a quality selection of kids coats this year but are in need of additional adult sized items.&nbsp;

"I do think the need is going to be really high this year," Nelson said. "And so those extra blankets, sweaters, you know the extra adult coats that would be great."

Coats for Kids drive headed down the stretch

NEWTON, Kan. —&nbsp;Work on the first new First Street Water Tank is progressing in Newton. 

The contractor poured floors on Oct. 6, all precast concrete wall panels were set with a 550-ton crane by Tuesday, and shotcrete was placed between the concrete wall panels on Thursday. 

The first tank is expected to be complete in about seven weeks. Once that tank is brought into service, the old tank will be taken down and a second tank will be built where the old one is.

The existing water tank stores all of Newton’s drinking water before it is pumped to the City’s four elevated water towers. The 3.8 million-gallon tank, which was built in 1939, is now severely deteriorated and must be replaced. 

Having two functional tanks will allow in the future for one tank to be taken down for maintenance and still leave the community with a steady water supply.

The new loan amount for the project, approved earlier this year, is $8,347,473 through the Kansas Public Water Supply Loan Fund at a gross interest rate of 1.26% per year.

HARVEY COUNTY — One person died in an accident just after 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Harvey County.

A car driven by 29-year-old Cody Pfeifer of Hutchinson, was westbound at the intersection of Northwest 12th Street and North Sand Hill Road, according to the Sheriff's Department .

A southbound SUV struck the car at the intersection.

EMS transported Pfeifer to an area hospital in critical condition. He later died&nbsp; of his injuries.

The driver of the SUV was transported to an area hospital and treated for minor injuries. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

The Harvey County Sheriff’s Office’s preliminary investigation indicates Pfeifer failed to yield to traffic at the intersection. 

The accident remains under investigation.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Public Works Street Division will be making street repairs on West 30th Ave between North Jefferson St. and North Madison St., scheduled to commence on October 24th, 2023.

The repair work is anticipated to be completed by October 30th, 2023.

Westbound traffic will be detoured at Adams St. to 27th Ave.&nbsp;Eastbound traffic will be detoured at Monroe St. to 27th Ave.

Both detoured routes will reconnect with 30th Ave. by utilizing Monroe St. for westbound and Adams St. for eastbound traffic. These detours are in place to ensure the safety of commuters during the repair process.

The Public Works Street Division understands the inconvenience these detours may cause and appreciates the community's cooperation during this essential maintenance project.

Reno County Sheriff's Office finds missing child

NEWTON, Kan. — Chisholm Middle School Assistant Principal, Chad Nulik, has been named 2023-2024 Kansas Assistant Principal of the Year. Nulik has been with USD 373 at Chisholm since August 2020. He received the news on Friday morning at school along with Chisholm and USD 373 staff and his family.

"Chad Nulik has been a vital part of the positive culture that we have worked to establish at Chisholm Middle School," Principal Joey Menninga said. "He knows how to handle difficult situations, challenges students and staff to be their best, but also knows when they need encouragement and support. He is a big reason why so many in the community are saying positive things about Chisholm Middle School."

Nulik is known for being student-centered and teacher-friendly. “He is a master at developing positive relationships with students and has been able to help many students through difficult behaviors and struggles because of the connections he has made,” part of his nomination read.

Another nominator credited Nulik’s dedication for making the school a better place, tacking behaviors and In-School Suspension procedures that led to positive impacts on student behaviors. 

“He brings a tenacity to the position through which he attacks problems with the intention of making situations better for students and staff," Superintendent Fred Van Ranken said. "He also brings that same approach to learning new things that will not only help him, but also support student learning. I am very thankful to have Chad on the USD 373 administrative staff. He is very deserving of this award."

Newton Assistant Principal wins award

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The unemployment rate in Reno County fell for the month of September 2023.

According to the Kansas Department of Labor, the jobless rate for the county went down six tenths of one percent to 2.9%. The jobless rate for the same period in 2022 was 2.7%.

There were 866 county residents out of work.&nbsp;

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a&nbsp;<a href="https://klic.dol.ks.gov/admin/gsipub/htmlarea/uploads/Press%20Release/LR%20Sep2023%20SA%20Rate%20Chart%20File.pdf">seasonally adjusted unemployment rate</a>&nbsp;of 2.8% in September. This is an increase from 2.7% in August and a decrease from 2.9% in September 2022.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 4,200 from August. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers.&nbsp;<a href="https://klic.dol.ks.gov/admin/gsipub/htmlarea/uploads/Press%20Release/LR%20Sep2023%20SA%20PrivateEmpl%20Chart%20File.pdf">Private sector jobs</a>&nbsp;increased by 4,000 over the month, while government increased by 200.

Reno County unemployment rate falls

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — National ‘Move Over’ Day is this Saturday, Oct. 21 and Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas is asking drivers to pay attention to what's going on around them.

"Be aware of workers alongside the roads," Steward said. "Law enforcement, tow truck drivers, roadside construction crews, all those folks are working mere feet away from speeding traffic. It's just really important that we as drivers take their lives into consideration and have safety in mind and slow down and move over a lane to keep them safe."

According to data analyzed by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, almost 2,000 people were killed in roadside crashes over the five-year period from 2017-2021, and nearly 1,500 of those deaths occurred after dark.

"Here in Kansas, 28 people died in roadside crashes while outside a disabled vehicle between 2017 and 2021," Steward said. "75% of those fatalities occurred after dark."

Kansas’ Move Over law requires all motorists to slow down and when possible, move over a lane, away from first responders, tow trucks, road maintenance, and utility vehicles at the roadside. Those who do not abide by the law are subject to a fine and court costs that can total $300 or more.&nbsp;

"One weakness of our law is it does not include stationary and disabled consumer passenger vehicles on the side of the road," Steward said. "For that reason, AAA Kansas and other traffic safety partners are leading an effort with Senate Bill 142 in the coming legislative session to include those disabled vehicles in the law and enhance the safety element for those vehicles on the side of the road."

Nineteen states already include stationary/disabled passenger vehicles in their Move Over law to protect individual motorists and passengers stranded along the road.

AAA: Move Over is still the message, even after dark

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Talking Tombstones continues its residency at Eastside Cemetery at 500 South Cleveland in Hutchinson this weekend.

"Five of them are buried in Eastside," said Kris Anshutz with Stage 9. "We're still going to do it in the round. It will still not be a walking tour. We have considered many times whether to go back to that, but there are so many more people who can attend now, because it's not a walking tour."

Below is a list of the people being commemorated and the performers for the event.

The first deceased character is Barney Shamberg, who moved to Hutchinson, opened a Mercantile and spearheaded a campaign to open a Jewish Center here.

Father Ted Blakeley will portray Barney’s life from Germany to Hutchinson.

W.C. Boyd is next. He was gruesomely murdered, but who was the culprit. Joe Woody will relate the sordid tale full of twists and turns.

Returning to tell her woeful tale is Mattie Blanchard, whose five children were bludgeoned to death and left to die in a house fire. P.J. Ford will explain the heinous crime.

Two well-known sisters will also make an appearance. Isabel and Phyllis Obee were pioneering women at the beginning of the 1900s and both excelled in law and politics. Diane Roth will depict Phyllis, a teacher and politician. Deanne Martin will become Isabel, who became a renowned Garden City lawyer.

Ellen Fairchild, played by Rachel Hein ,was a child of pioneers. She will relate the stories of frontier life, traveling and living in Kansas and Oklahoma and meeting some famous people.

James O’Loughlin returns with a somber firefighter’s tale. Tony Carpenter plays James, a hardworking man with little luck who died early in life from a fatal accident.

Auriol Lee, actor, director, and pilot joins us because she made an offhand remark to a friend about where to be buried. Deb Teufel will paint a vivid portrait of this famously talented woman.

John Shamberg, portrayed by Matt Christian, will be the finale for this year. John was Barney Shamberg’s son and became an eminent Kansas Lawyer, always battling injustice for famous and ordinary people.

The process when you attend is straightforward.

"They need to come on Ford Street, where the mausoleum is," Anshutz said. "There will be a tent where they can buy tickets. Tickets this year are a lot less expensive than years past. It's $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students. They find that tent, they pay, they bring their lawn chairs. They can even bring a picnic supper if they want to and bring a blanket and sit in front and watch."

There will be two performances Saturday at 5 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m.

Talking Tombstones this weekend

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For Allen Samuels CDJR Teacher of the Month, Morgan Elementary kindergarten teacher Celestia Rich, building the foundation for further learning is important to her.

"You really get the chance to teach them everything that you don't really have to do in second grade or first grade, even," Rich said. "We start at the very basics, like, this is how we sit at the carpet and this is how we listen. I think that was a big adjustment, just starting at the foundation things that they need, so that their first and second grade teacher can take them and use those skills."

There can be a large variance in what kids know when they come to kindergarten.

"You have kids who start out knowing all their letter names and sounds and kids who have never learned how to sit on the carpet before," Rich said. "The first, I would say, nine weeks, I think we're still in it. You are praising those kids who can do it. Those kids that can do it, I usually ask them to help model, like, oh, can you show so and so how to sit nicely at the carpet? I have kids who maybe had a really rough preschool year who came to me and I think, just the routine and the structure and just the explicit modeling of this is how we sit, this is how we listen, this is how we talk to each other, I really think, over and over and over, eventually, it kicks in."

The other thing about kindergarten is that they haven't been to school in a COVID year, except for a handful of three-year old preschoolers that would now be six, so things can go somewhat back to normal for them.

"They don't know what that meant," Rich said. "They didn't know what Zoom school was, or those apps we had to get on. It is kind of refreshing. Kindergarten teachers get that luxury of getting that first wave of kids."

She was nominated by Megan Baughman for her calm and patience in the classroom. Rich is also expecting her first child and says that the kids are excited for her and want to help her where they can.

I have kids who maybe had a really rough preschool year who came to me and I think, just the routine and the structure and just the explicit modeling of this is how we sit, this is how we listen, this is how we talk to each other, I really think, over and over and over, eventually, it kicks in."The other thing about kindergarten is that they haven't been to school in a COVID year, except for a handful of three-year old preschoolers that would now be six, so things can go somewhat back to normal for them."They don't know what that meant," Rich said. "They didn't know what Zoom school was, or those apps we had to get on. It is kind of refreshing. Kindergarten teachers get that luxury of getting that first wave of kids."<figure>

Plaid Friday coming up next month

From beautiful hand-crafted wheat weaving to stunning captured moments of the growing season to hefty jars and bags filled with wheat kernels, Kansas Wheaties brought their best entries to the Kansas State Fair. With ribbons awarded and entries taken home, Kansas Wheat recognizes the winners of annually sponsored contests at the statewide event, including the Market Wheat Show, Open-Class Division — “It’s All About Bread,” Kansas Wheat Photography contest and Wheat Weaving.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“A little friendly competition can be fun, and the Kansas State Fair is the perfect statewide showcase,” said Cindy Falk, Kansas Wheat nutrition educator. “Kansas Wheat sponsors a wide variety of contests, so there’s something for everyone in the family to participate in and enjoy.”

Meeting the needs of customers is important to any business, and wheat farming is no exception. The Kansas Market Wheat Show exists to educate Kansas wheat producers of all ages on the factors that they can control, to some extent, to grow high-quality wheat. Entries into the Market Wheat Show include five pounds of wheat grown by the exhibitor in the current year. Entries are then judged on protein, test weight, dockage, shrunken and broken kernels and milling and baking scores. Kansas Wheat also sponsors Division 121 - Wheat, which ups the sample size to 20 pounds of wheat in any container, all of which must be the same variety.&nbsp;

In the Market Wheat Show, the division champion went to Jay Derley from Lewis with his entry of HRW wheat, with Greg Turek from Caldwell receiving reserve champion. Derley also won the Market Wheat Sweepstakes for Western Kansas and Turek won the sweepstakes award for Eastern Kansas. In Division 121, Cameron Peirce from Hutchinson won the division champion award.&nbsp;

For those with a keen eye, the Kansas Wheat Photography Contest is a perfect fit. The contest is open to both amateur and professional photographers, who are challenged to capture the story of Kansas wheat across all aspects of the industry from seeding to storage to wheat fields, harvest, grain trade, milling, baking and anything else that captures the photographer’s imagination. This year’s contest winner was Loribeth Reynolds from Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Wheat weavers combine nimble fingers with pure artistry to make intricate creations from amber waves of grain. Divisions include everything from holiday designs to jewelry as these artists utilize traditional patterns and draw upon their creative talents to come up with new and contemporary designs. This year’s division champion was Angela Harlan from Viola, and the reserve champion was Donna Morgenstern from Salina.

And no state fair is complete without food. In the “It’s All About Bread” category, bakers exhibit their best recipes from sourdough bread, holiday bread and whole wheat quick bread. This year’s winners combined tasty ingredients with perfect technique to make winning entries of Rosemary Parmesan Sourdough Bread (Sourdough Division), Whole Wheat Honey Applesauce Pecan Quick Bread (Whole Wheat Quick Bread Division) and a Holiday Kolache Bouquet (Holiday Bread Division).

While the contests and categories for the 2024 Kansas State Fair won’t be open for entry until next summer, there’s no need to wait to try out a new recipe, break out the camera to capture wheat planting in action or try your hand at a new craft. HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; Union Pacific released its third quarter numbers on Thursday.

The nation's largest railroad is continuing a strong 2023, where it reported third quarter net income of $1.5 billion, or $2.51 per diluted share.

This compares to 2022 third quarter net income of $1.9 billion, or $3.05 per diluted share.

“We faced many challenges in the quarter, including continued inflationary pressures and a drop in carloads,” said Jim Vena, Union Pacific Chief Executive Officer. “Operationally we gained momentum through the quarter, which positions us to provide our customers with great service. Operating and safety metrics are showing solid improvement, as we increase asset utilization. We are aligning the team around our strategy focused on being the best in safety, service, and operational excellence as we drive growth to the railroad. Through our day-to-day actions, we will continue to make improvements as we exit the year.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Business volumes, as measured by total revenue carloads, were down 3%.&nbsp;

UP operates about 25 trains per day in Reno County, which include intermodal and grain shipments.

UP releases 3Q results

BUHLER, Kan. — According to a Public Notice placed on Thursday, the City of Buhler is approaching the water rights allowed for the year. 

Last year, 2022, the City went over the allotted water rights and was fined by the State of Kansas. They are asking that citizens conserve water as much as possible at this point. 

"The City is hoping to not have to take more drastic measures to keep water use low," they said. "Please help us out and conserve your water. Thank you."

Buhler issues water warning

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas is continuing to see prices go in a downward direction for drivers.

"The downward trend at the pumps has continued," Steward said Thursday. "We're down to $3.39 a gallon on average in Kansas. That's down eight cents in the past week. I think we were down eight cents the previous week. We're looking at a reduction of about 35 cents a gallon on average in Kansas over the last month."

Prices are a little inconsistent across central Kansas.

"It's a seasonal trend that we see in most years," Steward said. "We start to see gas prices fall in the fall and winter as temperatures drop. It's interesting that in the last few weeks, we haven't really seen a reduction in gas demand, but we have seen oil prices being fairly stable."

More than half of the price of a gallon of gas at the pump has its foundation from the price of the crude oil from which it is refined.

"The U.S. has lifted some oil sanctions on Venezuela, which could lead to a 200,000 barrel per day increase in U.S. exports from that country," Steward said. "That would certainly help our supply."

Steward said if this trend continues, we could see gas as low as $3 a gallon, depending on how winter weather slows demand.
