Lowen color graphics plays major role in launch of USPS electric vehicle fleet

HAVEN, Kan. — The City of Haven posted on social media Wednesday that when Haven residents check their mail within the next couple of days, they will see a letter coming from Waterwise Enterprise. 

Waterwise is assisting Haven in collecting information of the water systems regarding private lines, the EPA is requiring this of all municipalities, and the information is to be turned in no later than October 16, 2024.

Haven sending out mailer to fulfill water requirement

TOPEKA, Kan. — Governor Laura Kelly announced on Thursday the appointment of Hutchinson's Brad Thompson of Bridgman Oil to the Kansas Propane Education and Resource Council.

The purpose of the council is to enhance propane safety, education, and training for propane consumers and employees; to improve existing propane technology; to increase the efficiency of propane; and to develop other programs to educate the public about the safety, environmental aspects, and uses of propane.

The term of office is three years and the council meets quarterly.

Thompson appointed by Governor

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County has added a new First-Time Felony Drug Offender Diversion Program to expand diversion opportunities to previously ineligible individuals.

"This is a huge step in the right direction, right here," said Reno County Substance Misuse Health Educator Seth Dewey. "Any time that we can divert an individual to other resources within the community and potentially reduce the fact that they might have another criminal mark against them on their record, that improves the treatment outcomes, in the sense that, these individuals can then still get a job."

Prospective divertees have to go through a clinical interview with a mental health professional and have a recommendation concerning treatment, to be conducted by an approved provider.

"We're very appreciative of the District Attorney's Office and some of those measures that they are looking at to make those improvements," Dewey said. "If we can take that one potential barrier away and increase an individual's chance to get a good job, it can be one of those things that can keep them from going back to some of those things that they have previously known."

If the program is successful initially, it could be expanded in future years.

Health educator praises diversion program start

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Administrator Randy Partington explained why the county has tax credits that it is looking for buyers for connected with the work they did on the exterior of the Reno County Courthouse.

"Since the courthouse is a historical site, the Kansas State Historical Society allows tax credits for renovations, qualified renovations on the property," Partington said. "They look at our expenses. When we did the dome, the exterior, the windows and the weatherization, it was a little over $3 million project. Not all of that qualified. Architects and engineering fees may not qualify."

The amount of tax credits the county has for sale is $888,709.

"Anyone locally, if they buy tax credits, can give a bid to the county," Partington said. "Usually we get somewhere, mid 80s to low 90 percent of our tax credit. We don't get the full amount."

Sealed bids for anything up to the entire amount, but no less than $50,000 are due to the county by Feb. 26, 2024 at 5 p.m.

"The easiest or the best way is if someone wanted to buy all $800,000 plus, then we could send one tax certificate and get one check," Partington said.

Tax credits available from Reno County

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of East 11th Avenue and North Halstead.

This is part one of a three-part series on the history of golfing in Hutchinson. 

The very first golf course was at 1st and Town streets, over to Halstead Street, in 1901. It had nine holes, sand greens and a swimming pond.

From 1904 to 1906, there was a nine-hole course on the south and east sides of the old fairgrounds property, from about 11th Avenue to 13th Avenue, and east of Main Street to Maple Street. 

In 1905, Hutchinson got serious about golf and opened an 18-hole, grass-green country club just east of 11th Avenue and Halstead Street, and South to 4th Avenue. The first photo shows the Hutchinson Country Club about 1918. 

The second photo shows the clubhouse and an array of golfers posing out front with their equipment. 

Alas, bad luck beset the property. The Soda Ash plant just west of this course produced a lot of fly ash that eventually killed the trees and grass greens. This caused the club to move, with the Soda Ash plant agreeing to pay the club $400 an acre for the land in 1921. The third photo shows the property today where the Hutchinson Country Club was located, now owned by the Evergy Electric Company and used as a storage facility.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutchinson Country Club - Vol. 54

LINDSBORG, Kan. —Bethany College proudly announces the upcoming production of "The Spitfire Grill," a soul-stirring musical that promises to captivate audiences with its touching narrative and unique bluegrass-infused orchestration.&nbsp;

Scheduled to enthrall audiences in three performances Feb. 16, 17 and 18 in the newly renovated Burnett Auditorium, the show brings together a talented cast of Bethany students under the direction of Jester Award-winning set designer and director, Eric Johnson.&nbsp;

Mandy Todd ‘05, pit orchestra director, shares her enthusiasm for the distinctive musical arrangement featuring fiddles, mandolin, guitar, and accordion. 

"This pit orchestra is one of the most unique instrumentations I have directed," says Todd. "I am so excited to work with these fine musicians who will provide a vibrant tonal color to this spirited show. It feels great to be back at Bethany, this time on the other side of the music stand!"

Leslie Mangrum, Assistant Professor of Music at Bethany College and the musical director of the production, praises the dedication and talent of Bethany students. 

“You won't want to miss this touching production of ‘The Spitfire Grill'," Mangrum says. "I couldn't be prouder of our talented students, whose dedication has shaped this production into something truly magical."

"The Spitfire Grill" follows the journey of Percy Talbott, a determined young woman seeking a fresh start in a small Wisconsin town after her release from prison. The musical, recognized by the American Academy of Arts and Letters with the Richard Rodgers Production Award in 2001, has garnered praise for its emotionally soaring score and engaging narrative.

The Spitfire Grill" features a talented cast of Bethany students, each bringing their unique skills and passion to breathe life into the characters. 

The cast includes Aubrey Larson, a junior from Russell, KS, majoring in Music Teaching/Vocal/Pre-K-12, Ella McNett, a freshman from Larned, KS, pursuing Music Teaching/Vocal/Pre-K-12, Gracelyn Gaskill, a senior from Lindsborg, KS, studying Chemistry and Music Liberal Arts.&nbsp; 

Elyse Boden, a senior from Goessel, KS, majoring in Music Teaching/Vocal/Pre-K-12, Coleson Reinecker, a freshman from Inman, KS, focusing on Music Teaching/Vocal/Pre-K-12, and Riley Nickel, a sophomore from Andale, KS, specializing in Music/Performance.&nbsp;

Bethany College presents "The Spitfire Grill" next month

BUSHTON, Kan. — The Bushton Proud Committee will host a Valentine’s Dinner on Saturday, February 10, at the Bushton Community Center from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. followed by cards and games through 11:00 p.m. Cocktail hour will begin at 5:00 p.m.

The dinner will include fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, a dinner roll and dessert. Cost of the dinner will be $20.00 per person.

Tickets for the dinner must be purchased no later than Friday, February 2, with full payment required at the time of purchase. Payment can be made by cash, check or Venmo.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Just before 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, Hutchinson Fire units were dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 1500 block of East 5th. Crews found a working fire there in a 1000 square foot residential home with an elderly occupant trying to self-evacuate from the front door. 

Crews moved quickly to remove the occupant and transferred them to the care of EMS, the occupant was transported to Hutchinson Hospital for further evaluation. 

Fire attack crews made an aggressive interior attack while other members searched the home for other occupants, no others were found. 

The fire was listed as under control at 9:37 a.m. and crews worked to overhaul the structure. The cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time, but it was noted that the home did not have working smoke detectors in it at the time of the fire. 

As a reminder, if your home doesn’t have a working smoke detector you can request one from the Hutchinson Fire Department by calling the Community Risk Reduction office at 620-694-2871.

City Hall closed over lunch hour Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Lisa Gleason, United Way of Reno County Executive Director, will be moving to a new state-level position with the non-profit organization, as United Ways of Kansas State Director, beginning in March. With the announcement of her new role, UWRC will be seeking a replacement to lead the local organization and the work in Reno County.

As Director of the state association, Gleason will be tasked with helping to coordinate work across the network and will spearhead efforts at the state-level to support ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constraint, Employed) programming and advocate for policy changes.

“United Way organizations in Kansas are working to make our communities the best place for all our residents,” said Gleason. “I’m excited for the opportunity to better understand and help progress our work throughout the state. 

My new role will still allow me to be be very connected to the important work happening in Reno County as well, so I’m thankful to continue working on matters that are important in my hometown.”

Gleason touts a 19-year history with UWRC, beginning with the organization as a volunteer campaign chair. She then served on the board and was later hired as the organization’s first Community Impact Coordinator. She has led the team as Director for the past six years.

"On behalf of the board, we are incredibly grateful for the unwavering leadership and compassion Lisa has shared with all in our community. Although we are saddened to see her departure as our Executive Director, we know she is destined to make a positive impact at the state level. Gleason to become United Way State Director

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— Reno County Substance Misuse Health Educator Seth Dewey sees improvement on the Reno County Overdose Dashboard when he looks at 2023.

"This is our third year of collection of data, when we started ODMAP and our dashboard. In 2021, we saw 23 overdose fatalities, in 2022, we saw 22, so we saw that reduction," Dewey said. "Right now, we are awaiting still, a couple toxicology reports, is what we've been told by our Reno County death scene investigator, but we're projected to look at potentially 19 or 20, but we're still looking at a reduction."

The number of non-fatal overdoses is up, but Dewey sees that as better reporting.

"It sounds crazy, but this is actually a good thing," Dewey said. "We have some things happening here. We have individuals that are benefitting from the education in our community that's being put out on multiple levels, knowing what to look for in an overdose and also knowing the instructions to call 911, to administer Narcan or Naloxone and things like that."

Though Fentanyl is getting the headlines, that is not the main problem in Reno County, according to the dashboard.

"We're still seeing the main one be methamphetamine," Dewey said. "As we've known in rural America for a long time,&nbsp;methamphetamine has been, a lot of times, the drug of choice in these particular areas. We do see an increase in fentanyl overdoses, but still predominantly, by a large number,&nbsp;methamphetamine still takes the large majority."

Unlike opioid overdoses, which can be reversed by naloxone, there is no medication treatment for methamphetamine overdose. Sleep and food can help counteract some effects of&nbsp;methamphetamine, however.

Fatal overdoses down in Reno County

Ewing to lead Andover venue

NEWTON, Kan. — At Tuesday night’s meeting,&nbsp;the Newton City Commission approved a request from the Harvey County Health Department to close several downtown streets on April 28 for a new community Open Streets event.

Healthy Harvey Coalition Coordinator Lorrie Kessler said the idea is to take the street and turn it into a place for people.

“If you think about it, the Taste of Newton is already an Open Streets event, but there’s so much going on in the street that there’s not a place for people to ride their bikes, to roll, to skateboard, to roller skate, to walk, to play,” Kessler said. “The idea is that this would be more open and allow people to congregate and make the street into a park for a while.”

The event is described as a free community-building event to bring together Newtonians of all ages and fitness levels to promote healthy, active living and social engagement. The idea is based on the annual Open Streets ICT event in Wichita.

The street closures will include the 100 blocks of East Fifth and East Sixth, Oak Street between Fifth and Seventh, and the intersection of Broadway and Oak.

The Health Department says the event will provide more than just opportunities for physical exercise – it’s an exercise in building community, cultural identity, and social engagement. The organizers are still working out plans for food trucks, vendors, and entertainment.

Newton to hold Open Streets event

MOUNDRIDGE, Kan. — Moundridge Parents and Teachers Together is a member of the first class of Planning and Programming Grant awardees from the Kansas Department of Transportation's Safe Routes to Schools program. 

The KDOT SRTS Program is looking forward to work with communities across the state to create SRTS plans and fund effort that will get SRTS momentum going in those communities.

The Kansas Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program remains an eligible program under the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), signed into law November 2021, which reauthorized transportation funding and includes significant increases and changes to active transportation funding programs. 

Through the Kansas SRTS Program, funds are available to provide resources, technical assistance, and project funding to encourage and enable students in grades K–12 to walk, bike, or roll to school. A comprehensive approach to SRTS includes both infrastructure and non-infrastructure countermeasures and programs.

Moundridge gets planning grant

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— The January edition and 10th anniversary edition of Talk20 Hutch is coming up January 26 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Hutchinson Public Library.

"We have 10 presenters that each tell a story in 20 slides and only 20 seconds per slide," said organizer Kari Mailloux. "6:40, rigid structure, each time we do this. It's based on a format out of Japan called Pecha Kucha."

The ten presenters each have local ties and are talking about issues relevant to the community.

"One of them will be Hillary Barragan, who will talk about living with borderline personality disorder and finding healing and hope here in Hutchinson," Mailloux said. "We've got John Depew, who is a local musician. He's going to talk about writing music. Melissa Evans, who is an HMS-7 Assistant Principal, talking about some of the educational issues happening right now. Jesse Garcia Juma, a local community champion, he's going to talk about Hutchinson's legacy with music and maybe what our future potential legacy could be. Sandra Milburn has been covering Reno County through photography and now writing for 33 years. She was at the Hutchinson News for 32, and now she's at the county. Cody and Becca Ruebke are going to talk about the new ESports league they have started here in Hutchinson. Ruth Seeliger will be talking about turning disability into a superpower. Luke Tee, he's going to talk about loving our neighbors, how he does that here at home, but also in his work overseas. Kara Vaughn, who is a local artist, who kind of went viral this past year doing her chalk art and had the local chalk art festival, we'll hear from her and finally, Adam Weishaar who works for the county doing Emergency Management. He's going to talk about the phases of Emergency Management."

The first Talk20 Hutch was held on January 24, 2014 in the upstairs auditorium of the Library, and it overflowed into the hall and onto the floor, with nearly 150 people in attendance. It moved to the main floor of the Library for the second and each subsequent event, with the Library staff getting continually more creative about how to fit in more chairs. Talk20 Hutch coming up Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson’s Historic Fox Theatre is excited to host the inaugural Mardi Gras Gala Fundraising event on Saturday, January 27th, 2024. “Fundraising is vital for the preservation of our historic theatre, which turned 92 years old this past June”, states Penny Bettles, Development Administrator at Hutchinson’s Historic Fox Theatre. “On either side of the footlights, those involved, whether on or off the stage, represent a diversity of age, culture, life experience, and a strong appreciation of the importance of the arts”.

Indulge in a feast for the senses during the pre-party event complete with hor d'oeuvres, expertly crafted cocktails sponsored by DJ’s Liquor, and a special musical performance by Ben Eisiminger. The pre-party event will be held in the Wiley Building, in the space formerly occupied by TECH, from 6:00-7:00 p.m.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education (BOE) member Kail Denison resigned effective immediately at the school board meeting Monday night.&nbsp;

"She served in various roles on the board," USD 308 Director of Communications Stacy Goss said. "We respect her decision and we thank her for her service."

Denison said on her <a href="https://www.facebook.com/denisonusd308">USD 308 School Board Facebook page</a> that she resigned to help a new teacher explore employment opportunities within the district.&nbsp;

"My time on the USD 308 Board hasn't always been easy...far from it most days," Denison said via Facebook. "A pandemic, school threats, teacher shortages, budget concerns, and political agendas had been unforeseen challenges and caused many sleepless nights. I have never volunteered for something so hard and all consuming..... but easy is rarely fulfilling, and it has also been some of the most fulfilling work I have ever done."

Denison has served on the Hutchinson USD 308 BOE since 2015.&nbsp;

HARVEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 8:30a.m. Tuesday in Harvey County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Ford Edge driven by Sarah Elizabeth Martin, 28, Newton, was westbound Kansas 196 just east of East Lake Road.

The SUV traveled left of center, entered the eastbound lane and struck a 2018 Peterbilt semi driven by Brentley Foster Wood, 35, Great Bend, head-on.

After impact the Ford came to rest in South ditch. The semi continued southeast into the field.&nbsp; &nbsp;EMS transported Martin to Wesley Medical Center.&nbsp; Wood was not injured. Both driver were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

KHP Trooper Joe Owen wrote, "here’s a sobering reminder for all of us to slow down and drive safely during winter weather."

That's in eastern Harvey County, west of Whitewater. Both eastbound and westbound traffic is closed on the roadway due to the accident.The accident involved a semi and a car. First responders are on scene.
