INMAN, Kan. — According to the McPherson County Sheriff's Office, the Inman Police Department and Sheriff's Office personnel, including the McPherson County SRT responded to an ongoing situation involving shots fired in the 300 block of South Maple Street in Inman, KS. The person of interest was in custody as of 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Authorities on the scene secured the area. Emergency services, including local law enforcement and medical teams assisted in the response. 

Residents in the immediate area are still asked to stay clear until the scene is released and classes in Inman USD 448 have been canceled for the day.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As an institutional member of the National Aeronautic Association (NAA), the Cosmosphere is pleased to announce that its president and chief executive officer, Jim Remar, has been elected to the NAA’s Board of Directors. 

Founded in 1905, the NAA is the oldest aviation club in the United States. The mission of the nonprofit organization is “to oversee the advancement of the art, sport, and science of aviation and space flight,” which it achieves by promoting and officiating aviation competitions and record attempts, maintaining U.S. aerospace records, and educating the public on topics related to aviation and space flight, among other methods.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — EAGLE Media Hutchinson Operations Manager and Country 102.9 morning host Pat James died at his Maize home Tuesday.&nbsp;

Pat leaves behind his wife Tracy and his two daughters Allison and Abby.

Pat was a gifted broadcaster, known best for his days with Cornbread on KFDI in Wichita and WIL in St. Louis prior to coming to Hutchinson.

James had two wins for Medium and Major Market Personality of the Year in the CMA awards and four ACM nominations, including two in 2017 and 2024 at KHUT.

"Pat's legacy in country radio is assured," said Matt Althouse, Market Manager for EAGLE Media Hutchinson. "More than that, he was a devoted father and family man, whose presence his listeners will miss every day on their radio, but we will miss just as much in our building. He was the consummate professional. Our thoughts continue to be with his family."

James was the morning host on Country 102.9 in Hutchinson since 2017.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 is actively working to use the new KESA framework for accreditation.

"We just had our visit from KSDE," said Associate Superintendent Krystal Young. "We are preparing for our school improvement day, in which will travel with, Dr. Johnson, myself and eight other staff members to Lawrence for an opportunity to connect with three other school districts that are similar to us.&nbsp; This gives us an opportunity to really dig into our data look at what's going well maybe where some improvements are needed. What we're really excited about is that it's not adding one more thing, it's a direct connection to, what's our current data, what are the goals that we have for our district and then what's our strategic plan and then just moving forward with an action plan to make gains."

One of the most important pieces of data is the rate of growth for students.

"Eighty percent of our students made a year's growth," Young said. "That was something that we were really proud of. We know that we are working hard to help our students be successful and we also know that there is room for improvement. One of the things that we talked about a lot with the board was an action plan moving forward and our board is really open to just us being innovative and looking at maybe how to structure kindergarten differently."

Kindergarten readiness is also a measure that could use assistance from the child care offerings that are going to be available in the district in the coming years.&nbsp;

"We are hopeful that when the bond passes and we can put everybody in the same place that that will be an opportunity for us to connect more with our community," Young said. "We also know that that starts as early as birth and so the connection we have with parents as teachers the connection we have with daycares the home visits that our early education staff are doing, all of those things are pieces of the puzzle."

If USD 308 receives approval from the State Board of Education in January, a $109.5 million bond issue would be voted on April 1.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Allen Samuels CDJR presented&nbsp;Harlee Ebersole, a substitute teacher at Faris Elementary in USD 308 with a vehicle in the Hope for the Holidays car giveaway on Tuesday.

Harlee was nominated by her mom,&nbsp;Ronni Baldwin.&nbsp;

"Harlee is an amazing young lady always working her tail off not only for her own needs but to help others," Baldwin said. "She has the biggest heart of anyone I know. She got into an accident and she still owed money on the vehicle that was totaled and GAP did not fully cover. She has been struggling since and has been getting rides everywhere and really needs a car. She would be the most deserving and so thankful."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A building in Hutchinson will be allowed to stand and be fixed after more than two and a half hours of discussion by the Hutchinson City Council Tuesday evening, as the council tabled a motion that would have found the building at 3405 East 4th to be unsafe and dangerous. 

The intent of the motion to table was to allow workers to shore up a damaged section of the building that collapsed in the spring and then go forward with further attempts at code compliance once that work is finished.&nbsp;

The council, at the suggestion of City of Hutchinson Building Official Jason Lady, will revisit the issue at their January 21, 2025 meeting to see if the building's tenant, Dan Rasure, who has a worm farm in the building, has been making satisfactory progress in the interim time.

The worm farm usage is not what it was approved to have when the Special Use Permit was issued on it in 2010 and it hasn't had a Certificate of Occupancy for at least four years. The council wants to see the code complied with, but they are trying to make every effort not to close a functioning business, if the repairs can be made.

Clinic releases additional information on BCBS decision

RENO COUNTY, Kan. — A Reno County man accused of attempted murder made his initial court appearance Tuesday. 

According to court documents filed by Reno County District Attorney Tom Stanton, Randy Colin is alleged to have attempted to kill Logan Mansur on January 22, 2022 by attempting to smother Mansur with a pillow and also attempting to strangle Mansur.

In addition to the attempted murder charge, Colin is also charged with the lesser offenses of Aggravated Domestic Battery and Domestic Battery.

MEDORA, Kan. — According to the Reno County Sheriff's Office an accident that slowed traffic near Medora Monday night could have been a lot worse. 

Around 6 p.m. Monday, deputies were dispatched to the area of Old K-61 and 85th Avenue, in the Medora area, for an injury accident. 

Investigation into the accident resulted in discovering Issac Jones was northbound on old K61 heading to Buhler. Jones vehicle ran the northbound stop sign on 85th and Old K61. Issac collided with a van driven by Emilie Harker. Emilie was eastbound with her children and mother in her van heading to Buhler. 

      The van was struck in the rear passenger side causing it to spin and roll 3 times landing on the railroad tracks. No trains were coming. The airbags deployed in both vehicles, and everyone was wearing seatbelts. 

    EMS checked everyone out and surprisingly no one was injured. Both vehicles involved were towed from the scene. Enforcement action was taken for failure to stop at a posted stop sign.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Bethany College has announced a groundbreaking 2+2 articulation agreement with Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) that will provide students with a seamless pathway to earn an Associate of Arts in Animation from HutchCC and transfer to Bethany College to complete a Bachelor of Arts in 3D Computer Animation. 

The formal signing of the agreement took place on December 11, 2024, at Hutchinson Community College, marking the&nbsp;beginning of an exciting collaboration between the two institutions.

“This partnership exemplifies our commitment to creating accessible, high-quality educational opportunities for students while supporting their professional aspirations in a rapidly growing industry,” said Interim Bethany College President&nbsp;Steve Eckman. “Together, Bethany and HutchCC are providing a unique pathway for students to combine the foundational expertise of HutchCC with the specialized, industry-connected program at Bethany.”

The 2+2 program allows students to complete the first two years of their education at HutchCC, earning an Associate of Arts in Animation. Students can then transfer to Bethany College for the remaining two years to pursue a Bachelor of Arts majoring in 3D Computer Animation. This program provides students with a cost-effective and structured way to prepare for exciting careers in digital arts, animation, and related fields.

“Our faculty have worked on such major films such as The Book of Life and on AAA game titles for Lost Boys Interactive, as well as many other award-winning short films bringing real-world expertise into the classroom,” said Sarah Mathia, Assistant Professor of Art and Director of Art and Digital Media at Bethany College.

“Through this partnership, students will gain access to cutting-edge labs, a dynamic curriculum, and mentorship from professional artists, positioning them for success in this highly competitive field.”

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that multimedia artists and animators will see a 5% growth in demand from 2023 to 2033, with median annual wages exceeding $78,000. This agreement equips students with the skills and credentials&nbsp;needed to excel in this growing field while offering a unique opportunity to study digital arts in rural Kansas.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson City Manager Enrico Villegas updated Hutch Post on the Atrium demolition process.

"This was the last measure that we wanted to employ, but it is good to see a sense of relief and with the change order that is on the agenda. that will take into account the condition of the parking lot that just with stormwater runoff it could be an issue down the road now that there's no longer a structure there.&nbsp; With heavy construction equipment in and out it has busted up the parking lot even more so it just makes sense to scrape the entire lot and put back grass."

The Hutchinson City Council meets Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.

PRATT —A&nbsp; man died in a house fire in Pratt on Monday.

Just after 2:30p.m. crews were dispatched to a house fire in the 700 block of W. 3rd Street in Pratt, according to a media release. 

First responders reported a woman and her two children escaped the fire and had non-life-threatening injuries. One person was still inside the home. Firefighters from the city of Pratt were able to get the 38-year-old man out of the house. He later died of his injuries.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The State Fire Marshal's office sent two special agents to investigate. The cause of the fire was determined an accidental electrical fire.

The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire. Two Special Agents assisted in the investigation, according to Lance Feyh with the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Authorities have not released the name of the man who died or his cause of death.

"After you turn in the application, then you have an interview process," USD 308 Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson told the USD 308 Board of Education on Monday. "It is nice that they're making all of those virtual now, so you don't have to drive all the way to Topeka and have a 20-minute meeting to drive all the way back, so those will be virtual."

Johnson will be meeting with a four-person committee who will go over the 200 page packet the district sent in to the state.

"Mostly in that 20 minutes, they're going to hear a brief description of the project, why it's needed, the cost, the mill rate," Johnson said. "What was the process determined? How did you involve the community in that? Was the board unanimous in their support of this? Who will lead the effort in the community? Any extracurricular projects? So they'll be kind of just looking at that, just trying to get an overview of that."

There is a statewide bond cap. A lot of districts are looking for bond issues this year, so it isn't clear who will get them and who won't at this point.

"In that state statute, they talk about four criteria that they want to evaluate as to who gets access to the bond cap and who doesn't," Johnson said. "If you don't have any state aid whatsoever, it doesn't matter. We do have state aid, 17%. So if you don't have state aid, then you don't go against the bond cap, but some of the things that they're looking about to prioritize who gets into the bond cap is unsafe buildings, this is in the statute. Are buildings unsafe, are kids there a potential harm? Is there student growth, like you're just not going to have room if you don't make this project happen? Or some instructional focus and then energy efficiency. So those are the kind of things that are in the statute."

If all else is equal, then it's first come, first served. The State Board of Education meeting where the official word will come down one way or the other is in mid-January. If approved, the election would be April 1.

SALINE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 1 p.m. Monday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Honda Accord driven by&nbsp; Matthew Wilson, 37, McPherson, was northbound in the&nbsp; 11000 block of Gypsum Valley Road.

The car traveled off the road to the left and into the ditch. The car continued in the ditch, hit a field entrance, went airborne and struck a power pole.

EMS transported Wilson to&nbsp;Salina Regional Health Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kansas man hospitalized after car strikes power pole

HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. —&nbsp;USD 373 has concluded the internal investigation of the events that took place concerning the evacuation of a school bus on Friday afternoon, December 13, 2024.

The bus driver stopped on South Kansas Avenue near SE 14th Street and asked the students to exit the bus.

Based upon the internal investigation, 37 students were onboard the bus that was evacuated due to fumes from a punctured Axe body spray aerosol can. Students were directed to stay onsite. The district says seven students returned to the bus to be taken home while the remaining students left the scene on foot. The release from the city says there were eight students. Regardless, all students made it home safely.

At that time, another bus was dispatched to assist in picking up students as well as administrators and other school personnel in personal vehicles. Transportation personnel reviewed bus video, confirmed student rosters and communicated with parents until the district was able to determine all students made it home.

USD 373 will be reaching out specifically to the families impacted by the incident regarding potential witness interviews.&nbsp;

A school resource officer made a preliminary review of the video footage from the bus on Friday, and the Police Department is now in the process of obtaining that video and audio evidence. Police are also interviewing the driver and each of the students.

“We understand parents’ frustration,” Chief Craig Dunlavy said. “We all want to know exactly what happened, but this will take some time to investigate thoroughly, especially with so many juveniles involved.

Some initial reports to police were that the incident took place in the Walmart parking lot because so many of the kids wound up there. Store staff helped gather them at customer service to be taken home.

“Kudos to the Walmart staff who helped round up the kids,” Dunlavy said. “That was a big help in accounting for them and getting them home sooner.”

 </figure>Newton USD 373 and City of NewtonHARVEY COUNTY, Kan. —&nbsp;USD 373 has concluded the internal investigation of the events that took place concerning the evacuation of a school bus on Friday afternoon, December 13, 2024.The bus driver stopped on South Kansas Avenue near SE 14th Street and asked the students to exit the bus.Based upon the internal investigation, 37 students were onboard the bus that was evacuated due to fumes from a punctured Axe body spray aerosol can. Students were directed to stay onsite. The district says seven students returned to the bus to be taken home while the remaining students left the scene on foot. The release from the city says there were eight students. Regardless, all students made it home safely.At that time, another bus was dispatched to assist in picking up students as well as administrators and other school personnel in personal vehicles. Transportation personnel reviewed bus video, confirmed student rosters and communicated with parents until the district was able to determine all students made it home.USD 373 will be reaching out specifically to the families impacted by the incident regarding potential witness interviews.&nbsp;A school resource officer made a preliminary review of the video footage from the bus on Friday, and the Police Department is now in the process of obtaining that video and audio evidence. Newton USD 373 with more bus incident details 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Captain Haida StarEagle, the first Native American woman to become an intelligence officer in the Space Force and founder of the Future Indigenous Trailblazers in STEM (FITS) foundation, will embark on a cruise to Antarctica from December 19 to December 29, 2024. On this cruise she will present several Cosmosphere educational activities across her social media platforms. Presented by the Future of Space (FoS) organization, the cruise, called Space2Sea, brings together scientists, science educators, entertainers, and notable members of scientific fields to communicate the importance of space science and exploration to guests on the luxury ship. 

Speakers on the cruise will include Moonwalker Charlie Duke, astronauts Scott Kelly and Jose Hernandez, and others.

Captain StarEagle’s involvement with the Cosmosphere began in the summer of 2024 when she was invited to serve as a subject matter expert for Cosmosphere Camps. During that summer, she invited several Native American students to attend the science education center’s space-themed camps with the support of a group of space enthusiasts known as the Space Hipsters. While at the Cosmosphere, she expressed her passion for science education, saying, “I love seeing that moment when it just clicks.” StarEagle plans to return for the Cosmosphere’s 2025 camps and will bring more Indigenous girls to experience the camp.

StarEagle to give Cosmosphere lessons this month

I still have my very first pocketknife, a Henckels three-bladed stockman with a red bone handle. It’s safely stowed in a drawer now because its everyday utility was long ago surpassed by its sentimental value.

It was a gift from my father, as should be the case for every child’s first pocketknife. But it was so long ago I can’t remember if it was a birthday or Christmas present. I do know I was still young enough that opening the blades was somewhat difficult.

The clip, or the largest of the three blades, was by far the easiest to dislodge from its safe resting place. Its size compared to the smaller sheepsfoot and awl blades also made it the blade of choice for an impressionable youngster who might have seen “Rambo” far too early.

Consisting of polished steel and a deeply grooved handle, this pocketknife – my pocketknife – was similar yet different from other knives I’d briefly held to open a present on Christmas morning. My knife didn’t have the patina I’d seen on my father’s and grandfather’s. The handles on theirs were also smoothed by years of handling.

Still, I knew my knife was more than a physical gift. It was a signal my father had trust in me to possess a dangerous object. I have no doubt I tested this trust from time to time, but I would like to point out I still have all 10 fingers. I do carry a couple scars from a misplaced blade, but those came when I definitely knew better.

After the initial euphoria of becoming a pocketknife owner wore off, I did experience some disappointment. It turns out that while I could be trusted with the sharp blades, I couldn’t seem to find a reason to use them regularly, but it wasn’t for lack of trying. Just as someone holding a hammer begins to see nails everywhere, I used my knife to cut any loose strings on clothing, trim my nails or just whittle points on sticks.

While my first pocketknife is no longer in use, that doesn’t mean I no longer have a use for a pocketknife. Rather, it’s such an indispensable tool I now have several of them. The nicer ones are strewn about the house with one on my dresser, one on the table near my recliner and another on my desk. There’s at least four in my truck and two in my tacklebox, not counting the filet knife.

Some are similar to my original three-bladed knife, while others are single-blade folding knives that can be opened with the flick of a finger. There’s a boot knife or two included in the accounting as well (for whittling really big sticks).

Though I’ve purchased and inherited some of this collection of sharp objects, I’ve received the vast majority of knives as gifts.

While the first gift taught me there are limits to the uses of a pocketknife, it’s true treasure has been understanding it’s far better to have one and not need it than need one and not have it.

Insight: Pocketknives and treasures

HARVEY COUNTY — A man is dead after a weekend hunting accident south of Burrton.

The Harvey County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched Saturday at 7:10 a.m. to the 8200 block of South Prairie Lake Road.

Reports indicated three people were hunting in a duck blind when one individual accidentally discharged a shotgun. The gunshot fatally wounded one hunter. No one else was injured.

Aaron Snook, 41, of Goddard, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Sheriff’s Office has concluded its investigation, ruling the death accidental. No foul play was suspected.

UPDATE: Goddard man dies after hunting accident in Harvey County

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Police announced an arrest on sex crime charges that took place last week. 

On Wednesday, Dec. 11, detectives with Hutchinson Police Department Investigations Division, Special Operations Division, and Reno County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit arrested Johnathon T. Carson, 41-year-old of Hutchinson, for sex and drug charges.

Indecent Solicitation of a Child to Commit or Submit to an Unlawful Sexual Act, Electronic Solicitation of a Child 14-15 YOA, Sexual Exploitation of a Child, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Violation of Parole. 

Carson is being held in the Reno County Correctional Facility in lieu of a $100,000 bond.

The free event is on Tuesday, Dec. 17 on the second floor of the Hutchinson Public Library and will go from 4 to 6 p.m.

There are several different resources that will be available, including the Hutchinson Fire Department providing winter fire safety tips, plus you can sign up for LIEAP Assistance (Low-Income Energy Assistance Program), get free warm clothing, complete an application for Project Deserve Assistance home improvements, free weatherization kits (while supplies last) and free smoke detector sign ups.

Individuals that attend are asked to bring their photo ID, proof of income and utility bills.

Civitan service club has reached out and they will match $20 bills this week donated at the Dillons on 5th&nbsp;and Adams, and Cross Point Church’s Caffrey Grow Group is matching $20 Bills donated at the Dillons on 30th.

"We are way behind in both kettles and our overall fundraising goal," James said. "People usually wait to do most of their giving after Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving was a week later."

Please keep The Salvation Army in mind as you think of who to give to this year.&nbsp; There are many groups and organizations seeking donations this time of year, but The Salvation Army fell way short last year and they are trying to avoid that this year.

NEWTON, Kan. — The Harvey County Commission recently approved moving ahead with construction to remodel the county-owned building at 215 S. Pine St. in Newton, and there is an item on Tuesday's meeting agenda to set the amount of changes that can be approved without going through the commission process. The suggestion is that anything under $15,000 be able to be approved by staff.

The commission accepted a bid from Vogts Construction for $1,877,000 for the project. Vogts' was the lowest of four bids received. The project is anticipated to fall under budget - the commission set aside about $4.1 million in its adopted 2025 budget for the total costs of the renovation.

The county began the process to buy the three-story building in 2022.
