On Jan. 29, 2025, at 4:19 AM, officers with Hutchinson Police Department were dispatched to an address on East 2nd Avenue for a battery in progress. Timothy W. Bohannan, 38 YOA of Hutchinson, was taken into custody on scene. During the investigation probable cause was established for an arrest. Bohannan was transported to the Reno County Correctional Facility and booked on one count of Attempted Second Degree Murder.

HUTCHINSON – January 29, 2025 – The Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson is saying goodbye to three board members and welcoming three new members. Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson expresses sincere thanks to departing board members Linda Grote, JoAnn Rivera, and Perry Winter for their dedicated years of service. We appreciate their significant contributions and wish them well in their future endeavors.

The Club is excited to announce Bambi Stewart will be the Board President and Stephanie Trumpp will serve as the Board Vice President for 2025. Bambi shared that she is honored to take on the role of Board Chair for the Boys &amp; Girls Club of Hutchinson, “I look forward to working with our dedicated board members, staff, and volunteers to continue making a positive impact in the lives of our youth.”

Nancy Bether: A dedicated educator with over four decades of experience, Nancy Bether has made significant contributions to the field of education in Kansas. Her career began in 1972 as an elementary teacher in Haven, followed by a brief stint at Grandview Elementary School in Hutchinson. After a short break to raise her children, Nancy joined the Buhler USD 313 school district, where she continued to grow professionally. Nancy's commitment to education is evident through her academic achievements, including two Master's Degrees in Elementary Education and Educational Administration, as well as becoming a state-certified Reading Specialist. After retiring from the public school system, Nancy continued her educational journey by teaching at Holy Cross Elementary in Hutchinson, part of the Wichita Diocese Catholic School system.

Nancy's connection to the Club stems from her post-retirement involvement. Her passion for education and helping young people succeed led her to join the Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson, where she co-founded the EPIC Skillz program. Her desire to join the board is rooted in her ongoing commitment to young people's success and her belief that her extensive experience in education can provide valuable insights.

Wesley Vaughn: Wesley is a Lieutenant with the Hutchinson Police Department. He has over 20 years of experience in law enforcement, having served as a School Resource Officer, Investigator, Field Training Officer, and Sergeant. He particularly enjoyed his time as a School Resource Officer. To this day, he occasionally sees some of his former students, now adults raising children of their own.

His connection to the Boys &amp; Girls Club comes from his strong desire to keep kids safe within the community. He believes the Boys &amp; Girls Club provides a safe and fun environment for children and is committed to supporting the board and staff in maintaining this safe space for the community's youth.

In his spare time, he enjoys raising chickens and rabbits. As soon as spring begins, he can often be found tending to his garden.

Krystal Young: Krystal Young is the Deputy Superintendent of Hutchinson Public Schools, bringing over 20 years of experience in education. Her career spans roles as a classroom teacher, instructional coach, assistant principal, principal, and multiple leadership positions within the central office, including oversight of curriculum and human resources. Passionate about fostering student success and supporting educators, Krystal has developed a reputation for innovative leadership and a commitment to excellence.

Beyond her professional responsibilities, Krystal is deeply invested in the Hutchinson community, serving on the boards of both United Way and Rotary. Her dedication to education and community service reflects her belief in creating meaningful opportunities for growth and collaboration at every level.

Krystal Young has multiple connections to the Club through her roles in the Hutchinson community. As a dedicated community member, she values the Club’s impact on fostering growth and opportunities for youth. As an employee of Hutchinson Public Schools, she appreciates the strong partnership between the schools and the Club in supporting student success. Most personally, as a mom, Krystal experiences the Club’s positive influence firsthand through her own child’s involvement, giving her a unique perspective on its vital role in shaping young lives.

Boys and Girls Clubs of Hutchinson announces changes to Board of Directors 

MARC JACOBS -&nbsp;Hutch Post Giant Laundry&nbsp;has been sold to Busy Bee Laundry. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Robbert Garrett who owns Busy Bee laundry said that the owners of Giant Laundry were working to retire and had reached out to them. &nbsp;

Once the deal was made, they made the decision to remodel the location. For that reason, the mainstay of the northwest corner of Fifth and Adams has closed. &nbsp;

The 430 North Adams location will be closed for approximately four months as they are doing the remodeling. &nbsp;

This location will have the same features as the original location. In addition will have an area for potential commercial customers such as caterers. “The original site just wasn’t set up for this area of business, it wasn’t in the business plan” Garret tells us. &nbsp;

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 200 block of South Washington on the east side.

Hugh Gass decided to start a welding and machine workshop at 212 S. Washington. The first photo shows that business in 1917.

He started teaching welding and, by 1922, moved to 114 S. Washington to start producing boilers. The second photo shows what the 212 S. Washington location looks like today with the Salt Salon business in there now.

The Superior welding business continued to flourish and by World War II, a partnership was formed with Hugh Gass, his son, Harvey, and Clyde Anderson. The business was transformed into a training facility for 2,000 welders for the war effort. The name was changed to Superior Boilers. With 10 employees, they moved to 3406 E. 4th.

The business has continued to grow. The third photo is a 1985 aerial of the East 4th facility as it continued to spread out its footprint.

Superior Boiler has recently merged with several regional and national companies to continue its growth. It now occupies buildings on both sides of 4th street. The fourth photo shows the business offices today, now Superior Property Holdings L.L.C. at 3524 E. 4th.

TOPEKA, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a stream advisory for Little Cow Creek to Cow Creek, South of Lyons, Kansas.

The stream advisory is a result of operation problems at the city of Lyons wastewater plant. The city of Lyons is working to repair the problem.

The advisory has been issued because potential elevated bacteria and contaminants may be present in Little Cow Creek to Cow Creek, South of Lyons, Kansas. If you live or have activities near this stream, do not enter the stream or allow children or pets to enter the stream.

Kansas Department of Health &amp; Environment will rescind the advisory once plant operations are repaired and subsequent bacteria testing indicates secondary (wading) contact has been deemed safe.

Stream advisory issued for Little Cow Creek

LYONS, Kan. - Heads up if you are driving in Lyons today.&nbsp;

The Kansas Department of Transportation has temporarily closed K-14 in Rice County due to a sinkhole. The sinkhole is in Lyons between 2nd and 3rd streets.

According to KDOT Great Bend Maintenance Superintendent Mitch Jenkins, the highway is closed on the north side of Lyons between the U.S. 56/K-96 junction and the K-14/K-4 junction.

KDOT staff is working to determine how long it will take to repair the sinkhole and open the highway.

KDOT will provide more information as it becomes available.

Outlook Conference hosted by the Center for Economic Development and Business
Research (CEDBR) in conjunction with Greater Hutch, the economic development
partnership for Reno County.

Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce president Debra
Teufel talked about it during the BW Morning Show on Tuesday. 

“The Reno County Economic Outlook Conference is going to be
next Tuesday, February 4, and that is an event that we put on each year with
Wichita State University's Center for Economic Development and business
research, and Jeremy Hill used to be their director. Jeremy has moved on, and
he works for the Federal Reserve, but we have some of their experts that are
going to come over. In fact, I think Craig Compton, Jonathan Norris, and
another one of their economists, as well as Stan Longhoffer from the Center for
Real Estate, are going to be presenting regional data that is important to you
know, look at how Reno county is performing within this region, but also giving
us a little bit of a statewide outlook on the economy in Kansas.”

Chambers is the Allen Samuels CDJR First Responder of the Month.&nbsp; 

Chambers is an Fire Engineer on Truck Three blue shift based
at HFD Station on East Avenue E.&nbsp; Chambers
got his start in fire science following a layoff from a printing company.&nbsp; 

He was hooked as a kid due to visits to the fire station and
following his layoff he enrolled in an EMT class.&nbsp; Once he passed the class, he put his name on
several hire lists including with HFD.&nbsp;
While waiting for a call, he took fire science classes through HutchCC. 

His nominator, Pam Postier, in her application tells us, “Danny's
dream since he was little was to be a firefighter, he is now living that dream,
he works very hard, very dedicated to his passion, and he is now living it for
what I believe to be 18 years now.”&nbsp; 

Chambers tells us that being a firefighter “Isn’t a career,
but a lifestyle.” You never know what you are up against.&nbsp; “It could be helping someone with a water
heater, or a structure fire” so everyday is a different challenge. 

When we asked what he would tell high school students who
may be interested in the fire science, “Come do a ride along” so that they can
see exactly what it.&nbsp;

Danny Chambers is the Allen Samuels CDJR First Responder of the Month

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Debra Teufel the president of the Hutchinson/Reno County
Chamber of Commerce was in to talk about 2024.&nbsp;


“Yes, economic development last year, I feel like was a real
pivotal turning point for the community, and it a lot of work goes in behind
the scenes before you can turn projects into wins, but some terrific expansions
announced from some of our local companies.” said Teufel.

Teufel talked about the expansions and new projects that are
coming to Reno County 

“Last year, APAC, of course, announced that they're going to
be building a new headquarters building here, and so we're really anticipating
the breaking ground of that very soon.”

Teufel continued, &nbsp;“We
worked with Gunbros on an expansion that is going to happen out off of Airport
Road in our industrial area, and that's going to be a neat just addition, as
you come into town on Airport Road to see that gun range. And I'd never
realized what a what a real tourism draw that could be to have that in our
community. So that's that's going to be exciting.”

Some of the projects were out in the county. &nbsp;“Haven Steel embarked on an expansion down in
Haven, and you know, so those are some of the kind of, the bread and butter,
kind of local expansion.” 

Teufel touched on a project that the chamber worked with Reno
County on, “Superior Boiler also was adding jobs last year, and we worked with
the county on a new relocation pilot program for them.”

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A data walk through food insecurity in Reno County is being sponsored by the Reno County Community Wellness Coalition and Passageways to a Healthy Kansas.

The event is being held at the Gallery Theater at the Springer Fine Arts Center at Hutchinson Community College on Thursday Jan. 30.&nbsp; There are two sessions to the event, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It will have interactive displays that will share the stories and statistics behind food access challenges here in Reno County.&nbsp;

Using visuals and dialogue, a data walk is a powerful way to engage with real issues and help to create real solutions.

The public is invited to come and learn and share your thoughts to take action to build a healthier Reno County for all.

Food insecurity event set for Thursday 

WASHINGTON&nbsp;–&nbsp;U.S. Senator Jerry Moran – chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs – on Tuesday issued the following statement after receiving confirmation from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that there are no VA programs impacted by the federal funding pause:

“After my inquiry today, VA has confirmed that no direct benefits or assistance provided through grant partners is impacted by OMB's pause on federal funding. Veterans and their families, as well as the organizations that serve them, will continue to have access to the benefits, services and resources provided through the Department of Veterans Affairs. I appreciate the VA quickly providing answers to my questions and continuing the important programs that serve our veterans and their families.”

Moran: VA will not be impacted by federal funding pause

SALINE COUNTY —Two adults and two teens were injured in an accident just before 4p.m. Tuesday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2024 Buick Encore driven by&nbsp; Marvin Leroy&nbsp; Steenbock, 83, Longford,&nbsp;merged onto northbound U.S. 81 from westbound Interstate 70.

The SUV turned left in front of 2017&nbsp; USD 405 Lyons school bus&nbsp; transporting the girls high school basketball team and driven by Lelisa Dawn&nbsp;  Gilbert, 29, Chase. The bus struck the Buick SUV.

After impact the SUV came to rest across the center median and left shoulder. The bus struck the guardrail and came to rest in the center median.

EMS transported&nbsp;&nbsp;Steenbock&nbsp; Gilbert and two teens on the bus to Salina Regional Medical Center. The drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.&nbsp; There were 23 occupants on the school bus.

SALINE COUNTY—The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating an injury accident involving a USD 405 Lyons school bus in Saline County.

Just after 4p.m. Tuesday, Salina Police notified the KHP&nbsp;of a crash involving a school bus and a passenger vehicle that occurred slightly north of the Cloverleaf at the Interstate 135 and I-70 interchange. Multiple troopers responded to the scene.

The driver of the school bus and a couple of high school students were transported as a precaution due to slight injuries, none of which are significant.

According to a statement from USD 405, " Our high school girls basketball bus was in an accident on their way to Minneapolis. There were no apparent major injuries, although a couple were transported to the hospital for minor injuries. Parents have been notified."

The driver of the passenger vehicle was transported to the hospital with elevated, but non-life-threatening injuries, according to Trooper Ben Gardner.

STAFFORD COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 10a.m. Tuesday in Stafford County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Kenworth semi driven by Edwin Francis&nbsp;Weber, 53,&nbsp; Pratt, was southbound on Southwest 70th Avenue one and one half miles south of U.S. 50.

The vehicle traveled off the roadway to the left, stuck a field entrance embankment, went airborne and and came to rest in the field facing southeast. EMS transported Weber to the Stafford Hospital.&nbsp; He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

McPherson County Community Foundation

MC PHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson County Community Foundation (MCCF) is now accepting appointments for its newly launched Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Appointments will be available on select days from Feb. 10 through March 31.

The VITA program, operated by the IRS for over 50 years, provides free tax help to qualified individuals who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. This will be the first tax season that MCCF will serve as a VITA site, with all volunteer tax preparers being locally sourced.

To qualify for the program, individuals must meet one or more of the following criteria:

Appointments will be one hour long, with two volunteers reviewing each return. Available appointments are limited and must be scheduled in advance.

LINDSBORG, Kan. (Bethany College) — The Bethany College Presidential Search Committee is excited to announce campus visits by three candidates for the 16th President of Bethany College.

The visits are scheduled for Feb. 3, 11, and 13. The Smoky Valley community is invited to meet the candidates from 5 PM to 6 PM on each of these days in the Chapel of the Welcome Center on the Bethany campus.

These visits represent the culmination of eight months of work by the Search Committee, which involved screening 55 applications, conducting many Zoom interviews, and holding in-person interviews. The campus interview is the final step before presenting the candidates to the Bethany Board of Directors.

Bethany College announces campus visits for presidential candidates

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Maria Newboles is the Allen Samuels CDJR Teacher of the Month for January.&nbsp; She teaches religion and social studies to fifth and sixth graders at Holy Cross Catholic School in Hutchinson.

Newboles comes from a family of teachers.&nbsp; She didn't plan to become a teacher, but as a Hispanic immigrant from Venezuela, she had to learn English when she moved to the United States.&nbsp;

Newboles said one day she was thinking about her future, and being bilingual becoming a teacher was a natural for her. Newboles has taught at all grade levels, from second grade to the current fifth and sixth grade level.&nbsp;

Her religion is important to her. Especially teaching about her faith and Jesus. She added the best part of her day is when you know and see that you have reached your students.&nbsp;

Said Belen Dryden who nominated Newboles, "“Maria has had my daughter as a student. The impact she made on her is so comforting. and unconditional that now she moved on to junior high she still asks to go see Maria and say she misses her so much Maria's heart is so big for all her students she is the kindest person ever she now has my son in her class and he loves her.”

Newboles' class received Pizza Hut pizza and ice cream from Braums to commemorate her honor.&nbsp;&nbsp;

 </figure>MARC JACOBS Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — Maria Newboles is the Allen Samuels CDJR Teacher of the Month for January.&nbsp; She teaches religion and social studies to fifth and sixth graders at Holy Cross Catholic School in Hutchinson.Newboles comes from a family of teachers.&nbsp; She didn't plan to become a teacher, but as a Hispanic immigrant from Venezuela, she had to learn English when she moved to the United States.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>Newboles said one day she was thinking about her future, and being bilingual becoming a teacher was a natural for her. Newboles has taught at all grade levels, from second grade to the current fifth and sixth grade level.&nbsp;Her religion is important to her. Especially teaching about her faith and Jesus. She added the best part of her day is when you know and see that you have reached your students.&nbsp;<figure>

The impact she made on her is so comforting. and unconditional that now she moved on to junior high she still asks to go see Maria and say she misses her so much Maria's heart is so big for all her students she is the kindest person ever she now has my son in her class and he loves her.”Newboles' class received Pizza Hut pizza and ice cream from Braums to commemorate her honor.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🎧 AP Early Morning Sports Wrap for Tuesday

NEWTON, Kan. — The Fourth of July holiday is a little over five months off, but the newton city council will be taking up the issue of fireworks sales and discharge dates for the holiday.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fireworks sales year were from June 27 through July fourth.&nbsp; Discharge dates last year were June 28 and 29 and July fourth&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Last year there were nine fireworks permits issued and those vendors have been notified of the agenda item and may attend to provide input.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Other items on the agenda include a request to close athletic park circle on april 25 from 8 to 11 for the NBCS Eagle 5k, and consideration of funding the downtown facade improvement program.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The city council meets at Newton city hall in the commission chambers. The meeting begins at 7 PM.&nbsp;

Newton City Council to meet Tuesday evening

MCPHERSON COUNTY—One person died in an accident just after 11p.m. Monday in McPherson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 driven by&nbsp; &nbsp;Sam E&nbsp; Dial, 51, Newton, was northbound on 16th Avenue one half mile west of of Interstate 135. The road dead-ended at U.S. 81. 

The pickup continued northbound and struck the dead-end guardrail and a culvert.

&nbsp;Dial was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the&nbsp; Sedgwick Regional Forensic Science Center. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.
