The Rice County Sheriff’s Office is helping establish a Neighborhood Watch program.&nbsp;

Sheriff’s Sergeant Josh Blank recently attended a meeting a Crosspoint Church in Sterling to help establish a neighborhood watch program. &nbsp;The initiative is in the planning stages, with input and help by the Rice County Sheriff’s Office and local law enforcement. &nbsp;

The office in a Facebook post said “We're proud to partner to enhance community safety. By working together and involving more eyes and ears in the community, we can make their jobs easier and ensure a safer environment for everyone. During the meeting, we were present to answer questions and provide information to those interested in joining the program.”&nbsp;

The sheriffs department added that, Together, we can make a difference and ensure a safer, more connected community. If you're interested in starting or joining a Neighborhood Watch group, contact us at 620-257-2363.”&nbsp;

Hutch Rec closings and delays for Wednesday 

HUTCHINSON, Kan.,&nbsp; – The Cosmosphere is honored to receive a donation of fifteen Kansas state flags from Moon walker and former NASA astronaut Charlie Duke. 

Duke took the flags with him to the Moon on Apollo 16 in 1972. “We are grateful to General Duke for this generous contribution to the Cosmosphere’s collection,” said Cosmosphere CEO Jim Remar. “Tangible artifacts that have been to the Moon strengthen the connection between present and past, solidifying historic events in our collective memory.

 The Cosmosphere will use these flags to continue to inspire the future through space exploration.” At least one of the flags will become part of the Cosmosphere’s extensive collection, which includes artifacts from NASA’s Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs, as well as the largest collection of Soviet space artifacts outside of Moscow.

Winter Storm Watch / Warning issued

At its February 3 special meeting, the Hesston USD 460 board of education voted unanimously to approve a contract to Dr. Benjamin Proctor as the district's next superintendent.&nbsp;&nbsp;Proctor will take the reins on July 1, 2025, following the retirement of Kevin Logan.

Dr. Proctor is no stranger to USD 460, having served as superintendent from 2015-2022 and as principal of Hesston Middle School from 2012-2015.&nbsp;&nbsp;For the past three years, Dr. Proctor has held the position of Deputy Commissioner of Education for the Kansas State Department of Education, where he “collaborated with some of the best and brightest educational leaders in Kansas and across the country and . . . served on teams that are working to positively and fundamentally improve education for students across our state.”

Proctor has broad educational experience as a teacher, principal, and superintendent.&nbsp;&nbsp;In his previous term as USD 460 superintendent, Proctor led the community engagement process that resulted in the $33.85 million bond project, which is nearing completion.&nbsp;&nbsp;Under his leadership, the district responded creatively to the COVID-19 pandemic to minimize educational disruption and expanded career and technical education opportunities for high school students.&nbsp;&nbsp;He holds a bachelor’s degree in History Education from McPherson College, a master’s degree in School Leadership from Baker University, and a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership from Wichita State University.

Regarding his selection, Proctor said, "Given the opportunity to return home to USD 460, my desire is to help make Hesston the premiere school district in our state.&nbsp;&nbsp;I know what it takes to improve professional practices that will lead to positive outcomes for our students, and I know how to build the systems to sustain these practices and outcomes over time.”

Board president Layne Frick says that Dr. Proctor emerged from a thorough search process as the right candidate to lead USD 460.&nbsp;&nbsp;"The Board is confident in our choice of Dr. Ben Proctor and certain that under his leadership, USD 460 will continue to be recognized as a top school district in the State.

Hesston USD 460 names new superintendent

A new text scam is making its way to a cell phone near you. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The text scam says that you need to pay your FastTrak lane tolls by February 9, 2025, to avoid a fine and keep your license. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The text provides a link to a website that is fake. &nbsp;&nbsp;

It also says to reply Y, then exit the text message and open it again to activate the link or copy it into your browser and then open it. &nbsp;

According to authorities, the scam began in California, but several people in Kansas have reported getting the text. &nbsp;

If you get the text, do not click on the link or reply to it. &nbsp;If you receive the text, block the number and file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center. &nbsp;

The City of Hutchinson is beginning repair work at a couple of intersections in southwest Hutchinson. &nbsp;

Repairs are being made at the intersections of Avenue B and Adams, and Avenue C and Adams. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The intersection of Avenue B and Adams will be closed at the north and south ends of the intersection for both directions of travel. &nbsp;East and westbound traffic will flow without any interruptions &nbsp;

The intersection of Avenue C and Adams will be closed to all traffic. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The City of Hutchinson has posted the following detour routes. &nbsp;North and Southbound traffic will be redirected to Washington Street, located one block east of the closed intersections. &nbsp;

East and westbound traffic on Avenue B will remain open and drivers can use this route to detour around the closure at Avenue C and Adams.

City to begin work on two southwest Hutchinson intersections 

TOPEKA, Kan. - The state is preparing for the worst as this week’s back-to-back winter storms could cover the state with snow, making travel treacherous and causing power outages. 

With a pair of winter storms expected this week with the first arriving tonight into tomorrow and the second storm to pass through Wednesday into Thursday.  

Over the weekend Governor Laura Kelly verbally declared a disaster emergency. This declaration will allow for the use of resources to provide state assistance.  

“Kansans have faced challenges due to winter storms this year,” Kelly said in a statement. “The key to meeting those challenges is to be prepared. As i did during past storms, i urge all Kansans to take measures to make sure their families are ready by making a home emergency kit and emergency plan.” 

The Kansas Division of Emergency Management recommends that residents be prepared with home emergency kits, including a battery-operated radio, flashlight and batteries, extra blankets and warm clothing, nonperishable food, high-energy snacks, and drinking water, at least one gallon per person per day, for a minimum of three days.

🎧 AP Early Morning Sports Wrap in a Minute for February 10th, 2025

For the fourth consecutive year, Buhler High School seniors Isaak Neighbor and Andrew Morgan have qualified for the state championship in the KidWind competition.&nbsp;

The KidWind Challenge is a STEM based competition open to elementary, middle and high school students. The competition kicked off in 2009. &nbsp;

It is held annually and allows students to explore the power of the wind. &nbsp;The building and testing of wind turbines and then compete against teams in their age division. &nbsp;

The turbines are built and placed in a 48-inch by 48-inch wind tunnel. The turbines are then tested to see how much energy is produced. &nbsp;

Other parts of the competition are a knowledge quiz, a panel presentation and an instant challenge. &nbsp;

The pair will be competing in the state event in Salina on April 5. &nbsp;

Andrew will be attending Kansas State-Salina, and Isaak will be attending the University of Wyoming next year. &nbsp;

A Pretty Prairie graduate has been named as a Goldwater Scholarship finalist.&nbsp; Kai Smith was named one of four finalists by the University of Kansas.&nbsp;

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships are regarded as the premier undergraduate award to encourage excellence in science, engineering and mathematics.

Kai Smith is the son of Patrick and Andrea Smith and a graduate of Pretty Prairie High School. He is majoring in biochemistry and minoring in astrobiology. After graduation, he plans to pursue a doctorate in biochemistry with the goal of achieving a career in academia. 

Smith, a member of the University Honors Program, serves as an astrochemist in the CO-ACES research group, studying prebiotic molecules that form in interstellar media. Outside of the research lab, his current goal is to expand his STEM outreach program in rural areas, providing scientific demonstrations for underprivileged schools to foster broader community engagement.&nbsp;

 He also aims to increase KU student participation by involving students from disciplines beyond the Biochemistry and Microbiology Club. Additionally, Smith serves as a Payload Team mass spectrometry expert, has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and has worked with the National Radio Astronomy Observatory School. 

He has received the Jayhawk Undergraduate Research Training Fellowship, the Honors Opportunity Award, the University of Kansas Traditions Scholarship and the ASBMB Travel Award. Smith also works as a Polish saber expert at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival.

Pretty Prairie student nominated for Barry Goldwater Scholarship finalist 

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Former Iowa player and Nickerson High School standout Ava Jones announced on social media Saturday that she has cancer.

Jones said on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/avajones_35/p/DF0uLFnxNcZ/" target="_blank">Instagram</a>&nbsp;that she has Hodgkin lymphoma.

Just days after she committed to play for the Hawkeyes in 2022, Jones and her family were struck by a car in Kentucky. Her father, Trey Jones, died and she suffered a brain injury. Her mom was also injured.

“I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma after the results from the biopsy came back,” she wrote. “This is the news no one ever wants to get, but especially after spending the last 2 and a half years working my butt off and recovering from getting hit by a car. My body is very strong and I am confident in the doctors here at Iowa.”

Her former teammate Caitlin Clark commented on Jones’ post writing, “Praying for you kid."

Jones' scholarship was honored by Iowa and she was on the basketball team as a freshman before she&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iowa-ava-jones-retires-2b80c94b58f419264a4db5fb96a741a1" target="_blank">medically retired</a>&nbsp;eight months ago. She had several surgeries to address the brain injury as well as the multiple torn ligaments in her knees. She redshirted last season with hopes of playing at some point during her career at Iowa.

“It is with great sadness to announce that I am medically retiring from college basketball. My coaches, doctors, teammates and trainers have been amazing since the accident,” Jones said when she retired. “While I will no longer be a member of the women’s basketball program, I will still be on scholarship, receive a world-class education and forever be a Hawkeye. I’d like to thank my family for the never-ending support and I am excited for the next chapter of my life.”

Former Nickerson player Ava Jones reveals cancer diagnosis

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Jan. 31, 2025 – Evergy, Inc. filed a request and supporting documentation with the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) to recover recent investments made to improve reliability and strengthen the power grid for customers in its Evergy Kansas Central service area (green shaded area on the map below). Today’s filing begins an eight-month process where the request will be evaluated before the KCC, with new prices becoming effective in late September 2025. Prices for Evergy Kansas Metro, which serves customers in Lyndon, Edgerton, Overland Park and other communities near the Kansas City metro area (the gray shaded area on the map below), will not be impacted.

“Evergy continues to focus on keeping rates as low as possible despite inflation and the need to invest in maintaining and improving our system to meet the needs of our customers,” said David Campbell, chairman and chief executive officer. “Investments supporting reliable service are at the core of our request. Since the formation of Evergy in 2018, our Kansas electricity rates have become more competitive against regional peers, and we will maintain that focus.”

From 2017 to October 2024, Evergy Kansas Central residential rates have increased 5.6%, while the average increase for other states in our region has been about 17% over the same time period. The consumer price index for the period, by comparison, increased by 25.7%.

In the request filed, Evergy asked to increase rates by $196 million for its Evergy Kansas Central service area, which includes approximately 735,000 customers in Topeka, Pittsburg, Wichita and other communities Evergy serves in the eastern third of Kansas. If the Commission approved the full amount requested, the average residential bill would increase about $13.05 (10.36%) per month (based on average residential household usage of about 900 kWh per month).

As part of this filing, Evergy also proposed a new program to help qualified income-eligible Kansas customers remain current on their account and avoid potential disconnection. The Evergy Stay Connected Pilot program is a three-year program that will offer monthly bill credits and help income-eligible Kansas residents remain current on their account. To enroll, customers must be current on their account or enrolled in a payment plan. Evergy’s Stay Connected program is modeled on Evergy’s&nbsp;successful Economic Relief Pilot&nbsp;Program in&nbsp;Missouri, which has provided assistance to low-income customers in that state for more than 15 years.

Since its last Kansas rate review in 2023, Evergy has invested nearly $1 billion in infrastructure that serves Evergy Kansas Central customers. These infrastructure investments include technology upgrades and grid improvements to replace aging equipment, creating a smarter, more resilient power grid that is more reliable and efficient for customers. Grid investments were focused on outage prevention and response, including automation and sensor technology used to better identify outages and isolate outages to fewer customers. In 2024, Evergy completed the installation of an advanced distribution management system, a new software platform that will allow Evergy to optimize its distribution network and increase automation of outage restoration. &nbsp;

Evergy is not seeking recovery of costs related to the Panasonic battery plant under construction in DeSoto, Kan.

Included in the nearly $1 billion invested in Kansas are projects at Evergy’s Jeffrey, La Cygne and Lawrence power plants that help ensure their availability to customers now and for years ahead. The $1 billion investment made over the past three years is benefiting established customers today. A reliable power grid with capacity to serve growing electricity needs is important to all communities.

“Our investments are making the power grid that serves today’s customers more resilient,” Campbell said. “Our rate request will position Evergy to continue to maintain our system, reliably serve existing and new customers and to support economic development in Kansas.”

Last year Evergy announced a proposal to build two new baseload natural gas power plants and additional solar energy in Kansas. The two new natural gas plants will be the first baseload 24/7 generation plants built since the Wolf Creek nuclear plant was commissioned in 1985. These new gas plants are needed to ensure Kansas has the energy necessary to reliably power its economy well into the future and to serve the needs of customers by increasing generation capacity in times of high demand.

These proposed new power plants are&nbsp;not&nbsp;part of this rate review. Evergy is currently seeking approval from the KCC to build these plants and expects a decision later this year.&nbsp;

Evergy partners with the state of Kansas and local municipalities to attract investment and economic development. Large new customers bring billions of dollars of investment and thousands of jobs to Kansas, benefiting communities across the state. Kansas is successfully attracting companies in advanced manufacturing, health sciences, and aerospace, as well as technology companies building data centers. To ensure that new and large customers pay their share of energy costs, Evergy will be asking the Commission to establish a new rate structure to serve prospective large new industrial customers in a separate proceeding that would establish rates that ensure new customers pay costs associated with serving them, including the use of the shared power grid, and credit them for grid benefits they may bring such as private generation or demand response capability, which can lower costs for all customers in the future.

MARION COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 5p.m. Saturday in Marion County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1991 Chevy Silverado driven by Sutton M. Redger, 16, Hillsboro, was southbound on Jade Rroad North of 170th Street.&nbsp; After traveling through a low-water crossing, the pickup left the roadway to the east and entered a field. The vehicle became unstable and rolled approximately three times before coming to rest.

&nbsp;Redger was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Jost Funeral Home. EMS transported a passenger Sean D.&nbsp;Mader, 16, Hillsboro, to&nbsp;Wesley Medical Center. The teens were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

Kansas teen dead after pickup rollover accident

Our tree nursery, located just east of the McQueen ballfields, has been home to several large trees that we've been unable to transplant due to a lack of equipment.

Although the nursery was established years ago, it hasn’t been used for tree production as it wasn’t cost-effective. However, we’ve got some amazing, quality trees just waiting for the right home!

Thanks to FEMA funds received after the storms we experienced this summer, we’ve been able to partner with Shady Waters Landscaping to help with the transplanting process. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be spading and relocating 16 beautiful trees from our nursery to the Carey Park golf course.&nbsp;

This move will help address the significant tree loss the golf course has faced over the years, with many trees succumbing to age and storm damage.
