HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department is reporting a noticeable increase in cases of Hand, Foot, and Mouth (HFM) disease across the county, particularly among young children.
Though typically mild, HFM is a highly contagious illness that can affect people of all ages. It often begins with a fever followed by a rash and painful sores on the hands, feet, and inside the mouth. Symptoms usually last between 7 and 10 days.
While Hand, Foot, and Mouth is not a reportable disease, local healthcare providers, schools, and residents have alerted county health officials to a recent uptick. The virus spreads primarily through respiratory droplets from coughing, sneezing, talking, and contact with blister fluid.
To help prevent infection, health officials recommend:
- Washing hands frequently with soap and water
- Avoiding touching your face with unwashed hands
- Disinfecting shared and frequently touched surfaces
- Limiting close contact with individuals who are sick
“We’re encouraging parents to keep their children home from school or daycare while they’re symptomatic, even though exclusion is not required,” the department said in a statement.
Residents with concerns are encouraged to contact their healthcare provider or reach out to the Reno County Health Department’s Epidemiology Department at 620-694-2900.
