HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce and NAACP announced Tuesday they will be hosting a debate for the candidates vying for election to the Kansas Statehouse and Reno County Commission. 

On Tuesday, October 11th a Candidate Debate will be held at 6:00 p.m. at the Hutchinson Community College Stringer Fine Arts Center, 600 E 11th Ave.

Invited candidates include contested races for Kansas State Representatives and Reno County Commissioner.

Calvin Wright, President of the local NAACP of Hutchinson will serve as emcee. Richard Shank, Chamber Public Policy Committee member will act as the moderator. Candidates will have the opportunity to make opening and closing statements and during the question and answer period, candidates will be given questions and have an opportunity to provide a rebuttal. A limited number of questions will be accepted from the audience, or can be submitted in advance to <a href="mailto:ashleys@hutchchamber.com">ashleys@hutchchamber.com</a>.

There is no cost to attend. Members of the Chamber and NAACP, as well as the general public are encouraged to attend.

Hutchinson Community College sophomore linebacker R.J. Evans was tapped on Tuesday as the Jayhawk Conference’s Football Defensive Player of the Week for Week 3 of the 2022 season.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound linebacker from Hanceville, Alabama, was the leading tackler for the No. 2-ranked Blue Dragons in their 31-29 overtime victory over No. 7 Iowa Central on Saturday at Gowans Stadium.

Evans had nine total tackles with three solo stops, and made several key plays the victory where the Blue Dragon defense made a huge defensive stop on fourth –and-1 in overtime to set up the Dragons’ eventual game-winning field goal by Cole Segraves.

Evans had 1.5 quarterback sacks as well as another quarterback hurry and a deflected pass to help the Dragons make several key stops in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Evans is the fourth Blue Dragon to be recognized by the KJCCC this season. Quarterback Dylan Laible was the league’s Offensive Player of the Week in Week 1. Running back Rontavious Richmond as the Week 2 Offensive Player of the Week and Darby Roper was the Week 2 Special Teams Player of the Week.

The Blue Dragons have a bye on Saturday before opening conference play against Coffeyville on Sept. 24 in Coffeyville.

Blue Dragon sophomore defensive specialist/libero Morgan Harvey was named the Jayhawk Conference Volleyball Division I Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday.

The versatile sophomore from Hoyt, Kansas, reached double figures in digs three times and had a serve receive percentage of .931 in a 3-2 week for No. 17 Hutchinson.

Harvey averaged 3.12 digs per set in 17 sets with a weekly high of 15 in a four-set victory over No. 19 Northeastern Junior College on Saturday in Sterling, Colorado. Harvey also had 10 digs against No. 4 Indian Hills and 13 digs against No. 5 Western Nebraska.

Harvey is eighth in the Jayhawk West in digs per set at 2.33.

Harvey is the fourth Blue Dragon to earn KJCCC weekly honors. She joins Baylee Miller, who was Offensive Player of the Week in Week 1. Anna Dean was the Offensive Player of the Week and Andrea Serrano was the Setter of the Week in Week 2.

The Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team concludes a two-game homestand on Wednesday when the Dodge City Conquistadors come in for a Jayhawk West matchup.

Now ranked No. 20 in the NJCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Rankings, the Blue Dragons enter play on Wednesday with a 6-0 overall record and are tied for first place in the Jayhawk West at 3-0 (9 points). Dodge City comes into the game at 1-2-1 overall and 0-2 in the Jayhawk West.

The game will be broadcast live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network beginning around 5:50 p.m.

Hutchinson won its sixth straight to open the season on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Neosho County at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The Blue Dragons have done a majority of their scoring in the second halves of games this season. Of Hutchinson’s 18 goals scored through six games, 11 have been scored either in the second half or overtime.

Sophomore forward Hadlie Lowe is Hutchinson’s leading scorer with seven goals and two assists (16 points). She is the third-leading goal scorer in the league.

Sophomore midfielder Julia De Souza has six points in her last two games with a goal and two assists last week against Garden City and a huge insurance goal in the 87th minute of Saturday’s win over Neosho County. She has two goals and four assists for the season.

Defensively the Blue Dragons have posted three-straight shutouts and have allowed just one shot to reach either goalkeeper Olivia Felix-Cardona or Madison Quarles over that 270-minute scoreless stretch.

Dodge City opened the season with a 3-0 victory over Southeast Community College and tied Pratt 2-2. The Conquistador have dropped two straight – 9-1 to Barton and 2-0 at Coffeyville.

The Blue Dragons have a big week ahead. After Wednesday’s home matchup with Dodge City, Hutchinson travels to Johnson County (4-4, 1-2) at 5 p.m. on Saturday in Overland Park.

Juanita Jane Carmichael, 89, went to her heavenly home, Sunday, September 11, 2022, at Diversicare of Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was born February 12, 1933, in Montezuma, to Amos Robert and Hazel Nadine (French) Jantz.

Juanita graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1951, and Salt City Business College.&nbsp; She worked as a lead in the seat installation department for Collins Industries. &nbsp;Juanita’s faith and family were vital in her life.&nbsp; She had no time for hobbies, as Juanita was always taking care of her family and friends with unconditional love.&nbsp; Juanita was a member of Full Gospel Fellowship Church, praying daily and relying on her Lord and Savior for guidance.

On October 28, 1976, she married Jerry Faye Carmichael, in Hutchinson.&nbsp; They met while working at Collins Industries.&nbsp; He passed April 26, 2021, after sharing 44 years of marriage.

Juanita is survived by:&nbsp; daughters, Linda Bush of Wichita, and Jo Ann Stofer of Hutchinson; stepchildren, Elaine Gaskel (Nick), Christina Frost (Doug), all of Joplin, MO, Jerry Carmichael (Diana) of South Hutchinson, and John Carmichael (Carla) of Hutchinson; brother, Marvin Jantz (Agnes) of Colorado; sister, Myrna Moore of Iola; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, Jerry; son, Marvin Borntrager; brother, Harold Jantz; and sisters, Barbara Rowles and Mildred Griffin.

After going 2-2 at the Sheila Worley Invitational in Sterling, Colorado over the weekend, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team remained at No. 17 in the NJCAA national rankings, which were released Monday.

Hutchinson fell to the fourth and fifth-ranked teams in the nation in Indian Hills and Western Nebraska, while defeating Casper College and No. 19 Northeastern Junior College. The Blue Dragons swept Casper 3-0 and beat Northeastern 3-1.

The Blue Dragons are on the road for a Wednesday night Jayhawk West battle at Colby, which starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Colby Events Center. Colby is 8-4 overall with all four losses coming in Jayhawk West play. Hutchinson is currently 15-5, 3-1 in the conference and have won 5 of its last 7 games.

Florida Southwestern owns the No. 1 ranking for the fourth week in a row and received all first place votes, sitting at a 9-0 record. Indians Hills, who the Blue Dragons have lost to in both meetings so far this season, went from No. 4 to No. 2. Salt Lake is ranked at No. 4, and Western Nebraska, who topped Hutchinson 3-1 in Colorado, is fifth.

Seward County is the highest-ranked Jayhawk West team at No. 12. Butler received votes in this week’s rankings.

The Blue Dragons are 3-5 this season against nationally ranked competition with two wins over Top 3 teams.

The Dragons have been ranked in three consecutive polls.

The Hutchinson Community College football team withstood its first Top 10 test of the year, topping No. 7 Iowa Central 31-28 in overtime last Saturday at Gowans Stadium. The victory moved the Blue Dragons into sole possession of No. 2 in the latest NJCAA Division I National Football Rankings, which were released Monday.

Hutchinson was tied for second with Iowa Western in last week's national poll, who had a bye week prior to those rankings. Hutchinson received three first place votes, and New Mexico Military Institute, who remains the top team in the nation in the NJCAA, earned seven first place votes.

New Mexico Military Institute escaped Navarro's upset big over the weekend, winning 40-35 after Navarro led 21-7 at the end of the first quarter. Iowa Western, which is now outright third in the national rankings, defeated Garden City 43-13 to drop the Broncbusters to 0-3.

After halting Iowa Central on downs in the Tritons' opening drive of overtime, the Blue Dragons won the game with a 39-yard field goal by freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/segraves_cole_2w5s">Cole Segraves</a>. The Maize High School product had to kick the game winner into a 15 to 20-mph wind, securing the Blue Dragons' second Top 15 win of the year.

Hutchinson will have a bye week this week before hitting the road to open the Jayhawk Conference season at Coffeyville for a 7 p.m. kickoff Saturday, Sept. 24 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Coffeyville.

Coffeyville dropped out of the rankings this week, but is still receiving votes after an 18-5 loss to Independence on Saturday. The Pirates move back into the rankings at No. 15.

Northwest Mississippi remains at No. 4 and Kilgore jumps into the fifth spot. Butler dropped two spots to No. 10 after falling to Snow in overtime, 50-49, on Saturday in El Dorado.

🏈 HutchCC FB: Dragons stay No. 2 in latest rankings

Off to one of its best starts in the past seven seasons, the Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team is finally ranked in the NJCAA national rankings.

The Blue Dragons were ranked No. 20 this week in the NJCAA Division I Women's Soccer national rankings, release on Monday. This is the program's first national ranking since Oct. 17, 2017. At that time, the Blue Dragons were ranked No. 18, the last season the Blue Dragons started 6-0 was also in 2017.

The national ranking comes following back-to-back shutout wins over Garden City and Neosho County last week. The Dragons defeated Garden City 5-0, with four goals coming in the second half, and Neosho County 2-0, both goals in the second half.

The Blue Dragons are now 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Jayhawk West.

The Blue Dragons join Butler, Cowley, Barton, and Coffeyville as Jayhawk Conference teams ranked in the Top 20 – Coffeyville ranked No. 17, No. Barton at No. 13, Cowley at No. 12 and Butler at No. 6. Western Wyoming, a team the Blue Dragons defeated 1-0 in the home opener on September. 4, was receiving votes this week.

Eastern Florida State reigns as the No. 1 team in the nation with all eight first-place votes. Tyler Junior College is ranked second and Seminole State College) is at No. 3. All three teams in the rankings remain undefeated.

The Blue Dragons have two games this week, both conference games. Hutchinson plays host to Dodge City at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Salthawk Sports Complex. The Blue Dragons travel to Johnson County for a 5 p.m. kickoff on Saturday in Overland Park.

HutchCC Sports InformationOff to one of its best starts in the past seven seasons, the Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team is finally ranked in the NJCAA national rankings.The Blue Dragons were ranked No. 20 this week in the NJCAA Division I Women's Soccer national rankings, release on Monday. This is the program's first national ranking since Oct. 17, 2017. At that time, the Blue Dragons were ranked No. 18, the last season the Blue Dragons started 6-0 was also in 2017.The national ranking comes following back-to-back shutout wins over Garden City and Neosho County last week. The Dragons defeated Garden City 5-0, with four goals coming in the second half, and Neosho County 2-0, both goals in the second half.The Blue Dragons are now 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Jayhawk West.The Blue Dragons join Butler, Cowley, Barton, and Coffeyville as Jayhawk Conference teams ranked in the Top 20 – Coffeyville ranked No. 17, No. Barton at No. 13, Cowley at No. 12 and Butler at No. 6. Western Wyoming, a team the Blue Dragons defeated 1-0 in the home opener on September. 4, was receiving votes this week.Eastern Florida State reigns as the No. 1 team in the nation with all eight first-place votes. Danny Lee Brunsell, 60, of Lindsborg passed away, Friday, September 9, 2022 at home in Lindsborg.  Danny was born December 15, 1961 in Hutchinson. He was adopted by the late DeLon and the late Virginia (Coleman) Brunsell.  

Danny graduated high school and attended Colby Community College.  He worked as a rural mail carrier and farmer.  Danny had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel, especially to, out of the way, places and countries.   

Survivors include his brother: Dean Brunsell (Jan) of Salina; twin brother: Daryl Brunsell (Sandra) of Lindsborg; as well as numerous extended family members.

Danny is preceded in death by his parents; and his sister: Janita Gregoire.

Visitation will be Wednesday, September 14 from 5-7p.m. at Crick-Christians Funeral Home, Lindsborg.

The funeral will be held 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 15 at the Evangelical Covenant Church, 102 S. Washington, Lindsborg, KS with Pastor Jeff Waugh officiating.  Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

Leslie “Randal” Baugh was born August 29, 1950, in Hutchinson, to two loving parents, Harold and Phyllis Baugh. He passed away on September 8, 2022, at the VA Medical Center in Wichita.

Randal was raised in Hutchinson and graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1968. He attended Hutchinson Community College, playing basketball under legendary coach, Gene Keady. Randal served his country in the Navy during the Vietnam War in 1971. He began his career as a truck driver for Krause Plow (formerly) for over 25 years. Randal retired from driving in 2020, after several years as an independent contractor. He was known and loved for his quick wit, infectious smile, strong work ethic, and love for his family. Randal loved spending time with his loved ones and talking about sports and life.

He raised three sons with Sheri Lynn: Jason, Marques, and DeAndre Baugh.

Randal is survived by: his children, Jason, Marques, and Deandre Baugh; brothers, Ricky and Roger; sister, Roxanne; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews; and countless lifelong friends.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; a sister, Ruth; and nephews, Xavier and Todd Baugh.

His legacy will be carried on by his 5 loving grandchildren who loved their papa very much.

His life will be celebrated and honored at 11 a.m. Friday, September 16, 2022 at Elliott Chapel, with a celebration of life to follow at the Homebuilder’s Shelter in Carey Park.

STERLING, Colorado – Saturday had a slow start for the No. 17-ranked Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team, but it closed strong on the final day of the Northeastern Junior College Sheila Worley Invitational at the Bank of Colorado Event Center.

Facing another rugged weekend schedule dotted with three nationally ranked opponents, the Blue Dragons finished 2-2 for the weekend after splitting matches on Wednesday.

In a rematch of a five-set season-opening loss to No. 4 Indian Hills, the Warriors dominated the Blue Dragons on Saturday with a 25-21, 25-10, 25-18 victory. The Blue Dragons then faced tournament host and 19th-ranked Northeastern and finished the weekend with a four-set win over the Plainsmen, 25-23, 16-25, 28-26, 25-23.

Hutchinson is now 15-5 heading into a Wednesday Jayhawk West road match at Colby, the Blue Dragons’ only action of the entire week.

Middle blockers Anna Dean and Blondie Penaflor led the way for the Blue Dragons to capture their third victory of the season over a nationally ranked opponent. Hutchinson is 3-5 against ranked competition this season.

Dean had 11 kills and three total blocks to pace the Blue Dragons. Penaflor was right behind with nine kills and five total blocks. Alejandra Briseno also had nine kills.

Setter Andrea Serrano had 35 assists to guide a balanced offensive attack for the Blue Dragons. Serrano posted her fifth double-double of the season with 11 digs.

Morgan Harvey finished with 15 digs to lead the Dragons on the back row. Perrine Blanc had eighth digs. Harvey and Samantha Saunders had two service aces each.

Hutchinson had 13 team blocks and seven service aces.

The Blue Dragons couldn’t generate a consistent offense against the Warriors.

Briseno led the Dragons with six kills. Sophie Connor and Dean had four kills each and Taniya Golden had three kills.

Serrano had only 17 assists. Harvey had 10 digs and three service aces.

Second halves and the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team have become great partners this season.

After scoring 4 of its 5 goals against Garden City in the second half earlier in the week, the Blue Dragons broke a scoreless tie on Saturday with two second-half tallies to defeat Neosho County 2-0 in a Jayhawk Conference contest at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The Blue Dragons start a season 6-0 for the first time since 2017 and are 3-0 in the Jayhawk West. The Dragons play host to Dodge City at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Neosho County dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the Jayhawk East.

After being tied 0-0 at the half, the Blue Dragons started to generate more quality possession in the second half. The Dragons had one goal disallowed in the second half.

Sophomore Zara Lawless finally broke the tie with a strong shot from 28-yards out that carried against the wind and sailed into the top corner of the goal to put the Blue Dragons up 1-0 in the 78th minute. The goal was Lawless’ first of the season and second of her career. The goal was also her first career game-winning goal.

Similarly, in the 87th minute, sophomore Julia De Souza blasted a powerful shot from just outside the penalty box to give the Blue Dragons a 2-0 lead. De Souza’s goal is her second of the season. She has scored goals in back-to-back games.

The Blue Dragons posted their third-consecutive shutout and it was the second time this season and 50th time in program history the Blue Dragons did not allow a shot on goal. Hutchinson out-shot Neosho County 12-0.

Blue Dragon sophomore goalkeeper Madison Quarles (3-0) recorded her second straight shutout.

Hutchinson is now 14-2 all-time against Neosho County and have defeated the Panthers 14 consecutive times.

The No. 2-ranked Hutchinson Community College football team withstood four near-disastrous turnovers and walked off with an overtime victory in Saturday's NJCAA Top-10 clash at Gowans Stadium.

<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/segraves_cole_2w5s">Cole Segraves</a>&nbsp;kicked a game-winning 39-yard field goal into a feisty north wind to close out a 31-28 come-from-behind victory over No. 7 Iowa Central.

The Blue Dragons improve to 3-0 heading into the first of two bye weeks before traveling to Coffeyville on September 24. Iowa Central, playing its third-straight nationally ranked opponent, slipped to 2-1.

Segraves became the first Blue Dragon place kicker to boot a walkoff field goal since Luke Niemeyer kicked a 37-yard double-overtime game winner through the same north goal post at Gowans Stadium that Segraves kicked into on September 23, 2017 against Highland.

Getting to that point on Saturday was tenuous for the Blue Dragons.

After scoring the game's first points just 2 minutes, 3 seconds into the contest, Iowa Central scored the next 21 points unanswered and led 21-7 with 10:30 to play in the second quarter.

Hutchinson battled back to take a 28-21 when&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/simmons_jaheim_h2xm">Jaheim Simmons</a>&nbsp;scored on a 5-rush run with 6:27 to play in the third quarter. The Dragons then had to endure three fourth-quarter turnovers just to get to overtime.

The second Dragon turnover of the quarter led to the Tritons marching 67 yards in nine plays and tie the game at 28 on Keon'tay Fowler's 7-yard touchdown reception with 3:57 left in regulation.

Hutchinson was on the march for a potential game-winning score in regulation time. The Blue Dragons drove from their own 21 to the Triton 10 before losing a fumble with 12 seconds remaining.

Iowa Central had the first possession of overtime. Triton quarterback Omarion Bartlett was stuffed for no gain on fourth-and-1 at the Dragon 16 by&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/kirksey_terry_evb1">Terry Kirksey</a>&nbsp;and Jerrell Boykins to keep ICCC off the board.

Facing third-and-7 from the Triton 24 on their first overtime possession, Blue Dragon running back Tre Bess, who was Hutchinson's leading rusher with 89 yards on 18 carries, got a key 2-yard rush to the 22. That set up Segraves' game-winner from 39 yards out that, thanks to a 15 mph north wind blowing in his face, barely cleared the cross bar for the game-winner.

Lost in the smoke of Hutchinson's overtime victory was the fact that Blue Dragon sophomore quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/laible_dylan_elo2">Dylan Laible</a>&nbsp;became the program's career leader in touchdown passes. Laible threw career touchdown passes 50 and 51 on Saturday to surpass Luke Barnes as Hutchinson's career leader. Receiver&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/woods_micah_qrwd">Micah Woods</a>&nbsp;caught both the tying and record-breaking touchdowns. The record-tying TD was from 15 yards out with 11:58 to play in the first quarter. Laible then moved past Barnes when his 36-yard strike to Woods tied the game at 21-21 with 10:17 to play in the third quarter.

The Blue Dragons out-gained Iowa Central 394-372 to extend their winning streak to nine games dating back to last season. The Dragons rushed for 161 yards and passed for 191. Iowa Central rushed for 169 yards and passes for 203 yards.

Laible completed 20 of 36 for 233 yards with two touchdowns and his first interception of the season. He was sacked three times.

In addition to Bess,&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/richmond_rontavious_a45a">Rontavious Richmond</a>&nbsp;had 66 yards on 17 carries. Simmons scored two rushing touchdowns of 1 and 5 yards and finished with 20 rushing yards on seven carries.

Woods had four catches for 73 yards and two touchdowns.

The Blue Dragons had five quarterback sacks, but for the first time in three games this season, did not get a takeaway.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Superior Boiler has been a part of Hutchinson for more than 100 years. The company started as a welding shop and quickly grew to the company it is today. The company just completed a major expansion last year with the relocation of its watertube boiler facility from Richmond, Virginia, to Hutchinson.

The company manufactures industrial watertube and flextube boilers, scotch marine and vertical firetube boilers for process steam, hot water and waste heat recovery, and high-efficiency hot water condensing boilers. In addition to boilers, Superior Boiler also manufactures boiler room equipment items and parts, and provides 24-hour service. Superior Boiler employs approximately 150 people at its Hutchinson locations.&nbsp;

The company is in a unique situation compared to most manufacturers. That’s because Superior Boiler still relies heavily on non-computer controlled welding. Many of the components on the products the company makes are hand welded. The need for such skilled labor is great.

The making of boilers is a long and complex task, whether it's a firetube boiler or a watertube system. For a firetube boiler, it starts with taking a solid sheet of steel and fabricating it into a large vessel. In the watertube area, it means fabricating tubes that will be carried inside a very large containment area. Both require dozens of steps.&nbsp;

Each boiler starts in a design room where space needs are determined. How the boiler is going to service the facility is also determined. The process is necessary because each boiler is handmade to fit into a particular space. Each boiler has its own book of instructions, blueprints and details of how it will be built. Each step is closely watched by a quality control person. 

Once each step is finished, it is signed off and even stamped onto the boiler. The book moves from step to step with the boiler throughout its manufacturing process. 

Because no two boilers are alike, manual welding is so important to the company. While most of the boilers are made by hand, there are computers that cut parts and pieces as needed. 

Another machine in the watertube division can be programmed to bend steel tubes into a specific configuration to fit into a particular design.&nbsp;

The process for a firetube boiler versus a watertube system is very different. The watertube systems are extremely large and are built inside a housing. Some designs use a flatbed trailer. That trailer becomes a permanent part of the system once it is delivered to its location. A conventional boiler is also large, but is shipped by truck and then placed in its designated location.

Once the tubes are in place, the vessel is fitted inside the holding area and the rest of the system is assembled. This requires some very heavy lifting of steel plates that weigh several thousand pounds. Gantry cranes move back and forth across the facility doing the heavy lifting.

On a firetube boiler, the vessel is welded on until all connections are attached. The vessel then moves into an oven where it is heated to 1,100 degrees. That hardens the welded connections, making the boiler stronger.&nbsp; 

Once that process is finished, the vessel moves across the street for its final assembly and painting. The boiler’s controls and valves are installed and the boiler is painted either in traditional Superior Blue or whatever the customer orders. All of the components in this area come from vendors.

The area has its own shop where any part can be made, including one-of-a-kind parts as needed. The area even has its own wood shop to build the shipping crates needed to transport orders. The shop has carts to transport parts and pieces that will be assembled in the main plant. Each has a number matching the vessel across the street.

Each boiler can take 14-20 weeks to complete, depending on its size, and can weigh up to 60 tons. Watertube boilers can take up to 32 weeks to complete. They are shipped all over the world. Superior has a strong order list, but is fighting to find the skilled labor it needs to fulfill those orders — a problem many in the industrial sector are facing.

🎥A Day in the Life: Superior Boiler

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — No. 2 Hutchinson Community College looked poised to take the game-winning kick with the wind Saturday afternoon at the end of regulation.

With the game knotted at 28, week two hero Rontavious Richmond fumbled for the second time. Iowa Central took over with 12 seconds and took a knee.

Overtime would not have been possible without a big extra point from Cole Segraves. The freshman kicker needed a 35-yard extra point with 10:17 left in the third quarter after Micah Woods caught a 36-yard touchdown pass and let the Iowa Central defense know about it.

The 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty was added to the try, but Segraves made good on the attempt.

It was not the last time he would be called upon to make a big kick into the wind and rain.

Hutchinson got off to a hot start after Woods caught the first TD of the day from Dylan Laible. The 15-yard strike tied Laible for the most touchdown passes in Dragon history. His 50th TD tied Luke Barnes.

The next 21 points belonged to No. 7 Iowa Central. Four quarterbacks played for the Tritons. Zach Marker started the day under center, but left after going 0-5 passing.

Justin Silverstein had better success. He only went 9 of 21, but notched two touchdown passes. One to Cal Weidemann to tie the game late in the first quarter and later in the second quarter on an 18-yard pass to Colton Hoag.

The two air strikes and a long TD run from Jadon Washington (69 yards), had the Dragon defense stunned.

Coach Drew Dallas said it was uncharacteristic of his defense to give up such a run.

"With the exception of the long run, we played good defense," Dallas said. Outside of the long run, the Dragons yielded 106 yards on the ground on 36 carries (2.94 yards per carry). The Dragons gave up 174 rushing yards in all and 198 through the air.

Dallas knew each Iowa Central quarterback had the ability to hurt his team in a different way.

Listed as an "athlete" on the roster, John Holcombe rushed for 36 yards and threw for another 49.

The final Triton to make an appearance at QB was Omarion Bartlett. He went 6 of 7 for 46 yards and rushed for another 36.

Hutchinson helped Iowa Central by giving up the ball four times (muffed punt, two fumbles and one interception).

"We gave them four extra tries and they took advantage of them," Dallas said about the turnovers. Iowa Central did not fumble or throw an interception, but did turn the ball over a few times on downs.

Bess put the Dragons in a first and goal-to-go situation, but exited the game with an injury.Last week's rushing hero (Richmond: 158 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, one receiving touchdown), fumbled the ball away with 12 seconds to go as Hutchinson tried to put the ball in the middle of the field for a game-winning kick.Iowa Central played for overtime and lost the toss.Hutchinson elected to play defense first and stopped the Tritons on a 4th and 1. Terry Kirksey had his biggest tackle of seven on the day when he stopped the run short.Starting from the 25 yard line, Hutchinson moved the ball enough to put Segraves in position to make the game-winning kick.Segraves missed from 40 and 41 in week one, but hit from 50 (on a play that was blown dead). Segraves hurt himself against Navarro and did not get to try the 50-yarder again in week one (Connor Gellender stepped in and left the attempt just short).With the wind and rain in his face, and the game on the line, Segraves had to wait for his big kick after Iowa Central tried to ice him.After the timeout, Segraves sent the 39-yarder sky high in the wind.
