This is day 1 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Officially, the Kansas wheat harvest is now 5 percent complete, ahead of 1 percent complete last year and on average, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending June 9, 2024. Winter wheat conditions were rated at 33 percent very poor to poor, 35 percent fair and 32 percent good to excellent.

Growers on the Kansas/Oklahoma border started cutting in earnest around Monday, June 3, according to Chris Fryer, grain merchandiser with CoMark Equity Alliance, LLC. The southern tier of counties in his coverage area — Barber, Harper, Sumner and Cowley — are now about 20 to 30 percent complete with harvest.&nbsp;

Proteins are variable from field-to-field, ranging anywhere from 9.5 percent up to 14.5 percent. Moisture is dry and test weights are well above 60 pounds per bushel with several loads above 62 pounds per bushel. Overall, Fryer estimates the harvest will come in a tick higher than the five-year average.&nbsp;

“Yields are better than expected, so everyone is in a pretty good mood,” Fryer said.&nbsp;

Elsewhere in the coverage area, harvest in Sedgwick and Harvey counties is about 15 percent complete, with combines shut down by rains over the weekend. Harvest in Marion County in central Kansas is just getting started at about 5 percent complete and soft red winter wheat harvest is just beginning in Crawford County near McCune.&nbsp;

Overall, acres were stable this year and prices and yields are higher. Fryer noted most of the early wheat is going straight into the elevator bin to fill up space left empty from previous disappointing harvests. He also reported wheat is being sold to fill inelastic mill demand and they’re seeing some exports start to pick back up after last year’s dramatic drop-off related to the strong U.S. dollar and short supplies.&nbsp;

Harvest is now 20 to 25 percent complete near Clearwater, according to farmer Scott Van Allen, who reported in from the parts store where he was picking up what he needed to fix a fan belt for the combine.&nbsp;

He started cutting on Thursday, June 6, but in addition to the current equipment breakdown, he was delayed over the weekend by storms that brought straight-line winds and took him out of the field to clean up debris at his son’s place by Wellington Lake. Despite trees and irrigated corn blown down, the wheat was still standing nicely and they were back in the field on Monday, June 10.&nbsp;

Harvest has been a mix. Full-season wheat benefitted from nice filling weather and there is a lot of grain in the heads, resulting in heavy test weights of 63 to 65 pounds per bushel. Fields that were double-cropped behind soybeans were knocked back by dry weather and are more disappointing. Overall, the final yield for the farm should come in much better than last year.&nbsp;

Combines are also rolling again across Sumner County after a small rain delay, according to Chris Stevens, manager of Farmers Coop Grain Association, based in Conway Springs. Farmers in the area have been hopping and skipping around to catch ripe wheat fields and avoid green suckerheads since Wednesday, June 5. Most producers should have some good wheat, but there were fields that suffered from either a prolonged lack of moisture or drowned out in recent storms.&nbsp;

Quantity and quality exceed that of the last several years and are maybe even better than anticipated, so Stevens said no one is complaining. Test weights are good and heavy, averaging 61 to 62 pounds per bushel, and moisture has stayed dry around 12 percent.&nbsp;

It’s too early for good yield information, but Stevens said to expect a wide range from 30 to 50 bushels per acre. That is still 15 to 18 bushels per acre higher than last year’s average of 22 bushels per acre, and this year’s crop should hit within the area’s five-year average.&nbsp;

“Everyone is in a lot better mood when they are seeing the bushels coming into the bin,” Stevens said.&nbsp;

Day 1, Kansas Wheat Harvest Report

MCPHERSON COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 12:30 p.m. Monday in McPherson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by Ricky&nbsp;Collins, 64, Fullerton, Nebraska and a 2010 Yamaha motorcycle driven by Eric Whited, 40, Ord, Nebraska were southbound on Interstate 135 just north of the rest area at the New Gottland Township in the passing lane.&nbsp;

The Kawasaki struck the left rear wheel on the trailer of a 2021 Freightliner semi driven by Nurbolot&nbsp;Vhanyzakov, 27, Loveland, Ohio, who was in the driving lane. Both motorcycle riders laid their bikes over.&nbsp;

EMS transported Collins and&nbsp;Whited to Wesley Medical Center.&nbsp; &nbsp;Vhanyzakov was not injured.&nbsp;Whited  was not wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

2 hospitalized after motorcycle struck rear wheel of semi trailer

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Olen Mitchell, a WWII veteran and Wesley Towers resident made his way to <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/abddc481-0c2a-4487-9028-1f6dd9f37d93">Normandy, France with his great great nephew Jordan Mitchell for the 80th anniversary of D-Day</a>.&nbsp;

According to Mitchell Theaters-Doric Theaters, when the plane landed in Dallas on Friday night, several veterans were taken to a Dallas hospital as a precautionary measure after the busy week and long flight home. Difficulty breathing, dehydration, anxiety, irregular heartbeats, and exhaustion were the main symptoms exhibited by a few of the passengers. 

Mitchell was one of those experiencing some trouble and was admitted to the hospital for observation. Family members were en route On Friday night so his nephew Jordan Mitchell could get back to California later on Saturday.

According to Mitchell Theaters, they do not think any of the issues are serious. However, they wanted to let everyone know so you can keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they continue to make their way back home.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As of Sunday, Mitchell is still in the hospital. He is experiencing A-fib, which is causing an irregular heartbeat. The cardiologist plans to perform an electrical cardioversion on Monday.

WWII veteran recovers in Dallas hospital after 80th anniversary trip to Normandy 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;According to a Monday email sent to Hutch Post, the completion of the Woodie Seat Freeway Phase 1 is just a few weeks away.

Justin Karam, Construction Manager for the City of Hutchinson, said that the current tentative opening date for the Woodie Seat is July 1, but that is subject to weather.

South Hutchinson City Administrator Jeff Schenk said at Monday night’s city council meeting that he’d like to see Woodie Seat open a few days earlier.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; “I’m going to call them tomorrow and ask them to see if they can open it the Friday before because I really would like that to open on the 28th,” Schenk said. “And if it opens on the 29th, it would be really handy for people.”&nbsp;

This is the completion of Phase 1. Phase 2 is out for engineering work and will likely begin in the 2025 construction season.

Woodie Seat to reopen next month

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to a <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/posts/jadepiros_broadband-digitalequity-internetforall-activity-7204604084618723329-DRXD?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop">LinkedIn post</a> she made on June 7, former Hutchinson Mayor Jade Piros de Carvalho was let go from her position as the leader of Kansas Office of Broadband Development.

"As you may have heard, I am no longer with KOBD," Piros de Carvalho said. "I will dearly miss the team and the entire <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/kansas-department-of-commerce/">Kansas Department of Commerce</a> staff. If you are a Kansan, you need to know how hard the Commerce team works for the state."

Piros de Carvalho didn't go deeply into details, but here is her description of what caused her termination.

"This was not my decision," Piros de Carvalho said. "Tuesday brought the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. At 9:00 a.m. I was taking a selfie with the Governor and listening to her sing my praises to a room full of my peers at the National Governors Association broadband workshop. It was truly a career high. I adore her. By that afternoon, I was told that my job was on the line. I said the wrong thing to the wrong person, who made a phone call and I was gone."

She won't name the person who overheard her.

"We live in a very litigious society so you will not pry the person’s name out of me," Piros de Carvalho said. "I’m not interested in being sued."

Piros de Carvalho is going to take time with her family this summer while she considers what's next.

"I’m just not sure I’m built to last in the public sector," Piros de Carvalho said. "I don’t like to move slowly and I don’t like to parse my words. But I also can’t get out of bed every morning for a job that doesn’t make a positive difference in the world."

Piros de Carvalho left Hutchinson two years ago for the post in Topeka.

Former Hutchinson mayor let go by state

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two significant retirements of department heads at Reno County will be commemorated at Wednesday's Reno County Commission meeting.

According to agenda documents,&nbsp;Barbara Lilyhorn began her career with Reno County on April 5, 2010 as the Aging and Public Transportation Director. She has served in this capacity for the entirety of her career with Reno County.

Barbara served for almost 20 years with the K-State Research and Extension office prior to coming to Reno County. Barbara has an extensive history of serving her community and has done so through her many roles within the community. Barbara leaves Reno County on June 24, 2024 to begin the next chapter of her life. 

During her time with Reno County, Barbara has been responsible for growing the services that Reno County provides to residents including many support services for the elderly population and coordinating the awnings for the bus stops.

Also to be honored,&nbsp;Mike Mathews began his career with Reno County as a Field Appraiser for the Reno County Appraiser’s Office on March 26, 1990. During his tenure in the Appraiser’s office, he held the positions of Residential Appraisal Coordinator, and GIS Manager. On August 1, 1998, Mike was appointed to the Information Services Manager under the County Commission. Mike served under the County Commission until December 26, 1999 when the Commission moved IT into it’s own department and Mike was named as the Information Services Director. 

Mike was the only member of the Information Services department for 2-3 years until he was approved to hire his first support staff member.

Information Services now has 7 staff members and has been renamed to be the Information Technology Department. Mike has served the County in a manner to be proud of and will be leaving after 34 years of service. 

Mike’s last day will be on June 24th, 2024.&nbsp;

Reno County thanks both Barbara and Mike for their service.

The Board of County Commissioners will meet at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse.

 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two significant retirements of department heads at Reno County will be commemorated at Wednesday's Reno County Commission meeting.According to agenda documents,&nbsp;Barbara Lilyhorn began her career with Reno County on April 5, 2010 as the Aging and Public Transportation Director. She has served in this capacity for the entirety of her career with Reno County.Barbara served for almost 20 years with the K-State Research and Extension office prior to coming to Reno County. Barbara has an extensive history of serving her community and has done so through her many roles within the community. Significant retirements part of County Commission agenda

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Democratic Rep. Jason Probst said he expects the special session later this month to result in a bill that looks a lot like the ones Gov. Laura Kelly vetoed already.

"Her argument on this is that the overall cost is too expensive, that we can't afford it over every year going forward over the next five years," Probst said. "I think there's a lot of us that disagree with this. You know I'd remind you that two of these tax bills came out of the house unanimously."

Kelly thinks the state will run out of money sooner than the Legislature does.

"We think that some of budget profiles that have been produced are a little too dramatic in in the anticipation that there's going to be a lot of reduction in revenue," Probst said. "We think that we can afford the tax,&nbsp; probably most of us in the house do anyway. I think we can afford some of these tax cuts. I expect we'll pass something that looks very similar to the last two that we've sent to the governor."

The intent is to get the work done as quickly as possible.

"The anticipation is, and everything that I've heard is, that we'll be there for two days. That we'll be there the 18th, 19th," Probst said. "Special sessions are historically unpredictable and you know once you call a special session and you leave it open any topic can come up for discussion and so it'll be an interesting time."

We'll see what other topics, if any, are raised in the special session, as well.

Probst: Tax bill in special session likely 'very similar' to those vetoed

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — B&amp;B Theatres will start their summer kids series on Tuesday, June 11.&nbsp; With 57 B&amp;B locations across 15 states, the Hutchinson Mall 8 location will take part in the series.&nbsp;

"It's just a great opportunity I think to kind of celebrate what makes summer fun," Executive Director of Communications and Content at B&amp;B Theatres Paul Farnsworth said. "You know we have great new first run content like blockbuster films on the big screen that are coming from Hollywood, but there's a lot of sort of beloved family titles too that people want to see on the big screen and frankly a lot of kids who attend some of these features, have not seen those movies before on that format. It's just a great way to have some additional entertainment options at a more agreeable price point."

Kung Fu Panda, Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse and Minions: Rise of Gru are a few of the films that will play this summer in the series. Farnsworth said the film selections are a collaborative process with B&amp;B's booking department and partners at the film studios.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"Not every older title is available, and so we work with reps from Warner Bros. and Sony and Paramount to determine what those titles are going to be and a lot of times they are very excited to give exhibiters or movie theater companies the opportunity to get these films back on the big screen," Farnsworth said. "In certain cases also, there might be a title early in a series for example, like Despicable Me that might lead into another title that might be releasing later on in the summer which is sort of the case this time around."

Each movie is $5 per child and $3 for those who are a part of B&amp;B's Backstage Loyalty Program. Minions: Rise of Gru is the first film in the series and will play on June 11, 12 and 13. Showtimes start at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.&nbsp;

B&B Theaters kids series to begin this week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education will deal with a request from HCTEA at its meeting on Monday.

According to agenda documents, HCTEA is asking for approval to purchase 10 Lincoln Electric 300C welders for the Welding Technology program. These welders are multi-process machines that meet industry standards and curriculum outcomes set by the Kansas Board of Regents Welding program alignment, as well as course competencies for the Kansas Department of Education Manufacturing Pathway. These welders will replace existing equipment. Trade-in’s of the existing welders were included in 2 of the 3 sealed bids from vendors.

The welders will come from Lampton Welding Supply at a cost of $108,667.60.

New welders for HCTEA on BOE agenda

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Roger McEowen, the Professor of Agricultural Law and Taxation at Washburn University School of Law said he's read the drafts of the Farm Bill so far, and he's dubious that it will get done quickly.

"We're early in the process and I'm one of those that thinks that we won't actually get a farm bill this year," McEowen said. "I think this is the road to nowhere. We'll just get another extension in my view, as things look to me like right now, which the 2018 farm bill was already extended into 2024. We got an extension through the end of this government fiscal year, which is the end of September. I think frankly, they'll do the same thing, but we do have the chairman's mark, which passed out of committee on May 23. There are not enough votes. They're going to have to have more support across the aisle on the Senate side."

There are some issues that are going to hang up the bipartisanship necessary to get this across the line.

"The vast majority of the spending of a farm bill is going to the nutrition title, which is food stamps," McEowen said. "We don't call it that anymore. That's the old food stamp program that's there, but yeah, that's what it is. And that's where a lot of the contention comes in, particularly on the Senate side. The other thing that's contentious here would be the conservation title of this bill. And the House, the chairman's mark removes the requirement that funding that was contained in the so-called Inflation Reduction Act in 2022 be committed to certain, what they call climate smart ag practices. And it repurposes those funds to more traditional type conservation programs, and the Democrats are not going to like that on the Senate side. That's going to be another bone of contention there. That's another area where I just can't see them getting past an impasse on that."

The problem with trying to get anything done in an election year is timing.

"I think a lot of farmers, frankly, could live with another year extension of the existing farm bill," McEowen said.&nbsp; "The thing is for most farmers, they just want to know what the policy is going to be sooner rather than later. And we may not know that until we get into September."

Action has to happen for either an extension or the passage of a new farm bill by September 30.

HESSTON, Kan. —&nbsp;The community is invited to join Schowalter Villa residents and their families for a vintage car show on Saturday, June 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Mullet Place Assisted Living parking lot at 445 S. Main St., in Hesston. The event will also feature grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, drinks and chips for purchase.

“The car show is always a highlight for Schowalter Villa residents because they enjoy reminiscing about the vehicles that were part of their own life,” said Cherie Wohlgemuth, car show organizer. “It’s a great way for everyone to celebrate Father’s Day weekend!”

In addition to the car show activities, those who are interested are welcome to stop into Mullet Place Assisted Living and visit an open home, or stop by Hesston Bakery and Cafe for treats.

Schowalter Villa, a life plan community part of Bluestem Communities, is home to more than 435 residents living in health care, assisted living and independent living neighborhoods.

Entrepreneurship Connections is June 18

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As the Federal Reserve prepares to meet Tuesday and Wednesday, Europe has already decided to cut interest rates and Creighton University economist Ernie Goss sees that as a potential negative for this part of the country.

"That really hurts exports," Goss said. "Of course, this part of the country, certainly including Kansas, depends on exports of agricultural goods, export of manufactured goods, and when the dollar rises in value, which is what that would produce, that makes it more difficult to sell goods from this part of the country or the U.S. in other parts of the world. That's a real concern, is the rising value of the dollar because of holding up interest rates too high for too long."

Even though the short term may be negative, Goss is still optimistic, on the whole.

"We're in the best spot of the best nation on the face of the earth, and we're going to do well in the long run," Goss said. "In other words, Boeing is going to find the solution to those problems and outcompete Airbus. I can't believe Airbus could ever outcompete Boeing, and they won't in the long term. Likewise, our agriculture, our manufacturing is going to come back. It's just right now, we've got to figure out this issue with debt. Americans are covered up with debt, and we're moving in the wrong direction."

The concern Goss sees is that the federal government may make it easier for people to borrow against their homes, driving them further into debt, rather than giving them reason to pare back their lifestyles and begin to pay it down. Ultimately, that could hit small community banks hard, if the value is siphoned off of those investments and then people can't pay those loans back.

"These community banks serve their customers," Goss said. "They know their customers. They know the agricultural economy. You have J.P. Morgan, for example. Does Jamie Dimon, head of J.P. Morgan, does he really understand agricultural lending? The answer is no, but so we need these community banks."

Inflation is still the concern that the Fed is watching, as they try to keep growth at a slow but sustainable rate.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Zoo celebrated the opening of the Gateway to the Prairie exhibit Friday afternoon with a Hutch Chamber ribbon cutting ceremony.&nbsp;

"Not only does this give the opportunity for our guests to get to see these animals and really fall in love with them up close and personal, but this feeding space especially gives our staff the opportunity to manage our bison in a protected contact but in positive reinforcement situations," Zoo Director Nicole Mantz said.&nbsp;

The new exhibit is home to pronghorn, whitetail deer, mule deer and bison. In the portion of Gateway to the Prairie where the bison reside, a feeding station is available for guests.&nbsp;

The bison already resided at the zoo prior to the new exhibit opening, but in the last year, a pronghorn and two-white tailed deer were added.&nbsp;

Justin Combs, director of parks and facilities for the City of Hutchinson said the Gateway to the Prairie exhibit project isn't exactly what he would call city-led. He said the city had very little financial involvement.

"I think in 10 years we are going to look back at this," Combs said. "This is a really important project for the growth of the zoo because now we are really inviting our guests much deeper into the heart of the zoo and expanding to some spaces we never had guests. Beyond just the bison experience, I think just getting visitors back here is a huge step in the right direction so I'm super excited about that."&nbsp;

Mantz said the project cost a little over $200,000. A portion of the project was funded through a contribution from Dan and Shirley Power for $103,000. In September of last year, the Hutchinson Zoo celebrated the couple's donation for the new area and the donation of their 15-year-old Bison Norman. He was donated to the zoo's herd in September of 2021.

In the portion of Gateway to the Prairie where the bison reside, a feeding station is available for guests.&nbsp;The bison already resided at the zoo prior to the new exhibit opening, but in the last year, a pronghorn and two-white tailed deer were added.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>Justin Combs, director of parks and facilities for the City of Hutchinson said the Gateway to the Prairie exhibit project isn't exactly what he would call city-led. He said the city had very little financial involvement.<figure>

 </figure>"I think in 10 years we are going to look back at this," Combs said. "This is a really important project for the growth of the zoo because now we are really inviting our guests much deeper into the heart of the zoo and expanding to some spaces we never had guests. Beyond just the bison experience, I think just getting visitors back here is a huge step in the right direction so I'm super excited about that."&nbsp;Mantz said the project cost a little over $200,000. A portion of the project was funded through a contribution from Dan and Shirley Power for $103,000. In September of last year, the Hutchinson Zoo celebrated the couple's donation for the new area and the donation of their 15-year-old Bison Norman. He was donated to the zoo's herd in September of 2021.<figure>

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Westlake Ace Hardware is back with its annual Fan Drive, supporting The Salvation Army. While stocking up on hardware supplies this spring, you can donate by rounding up your purchase at the register. Every single penny given goes directly toward fans to benefit our local community! The local Salvation Army at 700 North Walnut will be giving out fans by appointment until the end of July. During heat advisory days, The Salvation Army will have it’s doors open as a cooling center and will have bottles of water available. Major James said, “Summer is known to be a fun time of year with kids being out of school, and getting back to making our yards look beautiful. However, summer can be a dangerous time for many with the extreme heat that we face in Kansas.”

Typically, The Salvation Army gives out close to 400 fans each year, however the cost of fans have increased greatly with inflation. The Salvation Army currently has just over 100 fans on hand to get started, but they will need help to have enough fans for those in need this season.
