The Youth of the Year title is a prestigious honor bestowed upon an exemplary young person in recognition of leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle.

Burgess is a junior at Hutchinson High School and has been a Club member for 5 years. Zion plays football for Hutchinson High School and is active in Club programs such as Passport 2 Manhood, Keystone Club, and Road Code. Zion enjoys helping kids break out of their shells and encouraging them to have a voice.

As the local Youth of the Year, Burgess will serve as an ambassador for all teens in the local Club. Burgess will receive a $1,000 college scholarship thanks to Heartland Credit Union and will compete in the Kansas Youth of the Year competition next spring.

Burgess is 2023 Youth of the Year

Davy E. Rothe, 86, of Hutchinson, died December 2, 2022, in Hutchinson.&nbsp; He was born September 14, 1936, in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of Martin W. and Mabel A. Petersilie Rothe of Ness City, KS.

Davy graduated from Ness City High School in 1954.&nbsp; He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954 -1957 as a radio operator, achieving the rank of Sergeant.&nbsp; He moved to Hutchinson in 1957 and attended Hutchinson Community College.&nbsp; Davy spent his career as a floor installer.&nbsp; He enjoyed camping, boating, hunting, carpentry, collecting toy tractors, playing cards, attending his grandchildren’s activities, games, concerts and recitals and spending time with his family.

On January, 30, 1976, Davy married Rebecca J. Koestel in Oklahoma.&nbsp; He is&nbsp; survived by: wife, Rebecca of Hutchinson; son, Clay (Karen) Rothe, Hutchinson; daughter, Laura (Andy) McReynolds, Hutchinson; daughter, Jayne Ediger, Partridge; daughter, Amy (James) Fletcher, Wichita; and son, David (Robyn) Rothe, Goddard; 13 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place.&nbsp; Private services are pending.

George Earl Sanders, Jr., 79, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2022 at KU Medical Center, Kansas City, KS.&nbsp; He was born October 3, 1943 in Kansas City, MO, to Drs. George and Caroline Sanders, M.D.

George graduated high school in Excelsior Springs, MO.&nbsp; He earned his Masters of Science in Education from Central Missouri State College in Warrensburg, MO.&nbsp; He enjoyed cooking, woodworking, restoring antique furniture, stained glass and diorama miniatures.&nbsp; He had a passion for classic cars and antique motorcycles.&nbsp; He loved interacting with nature; he nurtured swallowtail butterflies from cocoon to release every spring.&nbsp; He had a wry sense of humor which was a joy to most and an aggravation to a few.&nbsp;

In November of 1971, he married the love of his life, Freda in Lee’s Summit, MO.&nbsp; They recently celebrated 51 years of marriage.

George is survived by: his wife Freda; daughter Erin (Jason) of Hutchinson; grandchildren: Tyler of McPherson; Zaide (Rylee) of Salina; Caitlyn of Wichita; Chase of Hutchinson; and Isabella of Hutchinson; sister Christel Sanders of Corvallis, OR; brother Gene (Faye) of Excelsior Springs, MO; brother Charles (Annette) of Foley, AL; as well as his beloved nieces and nephew.

Per his wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial services.&nbsp; Cremation has taken place.

Marilyn LaVaughn Mann Bauman, 88, died December 6, 2022, at Hester Care Center, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was born May 28, 1934, in Gothenburg, NE, to Eilert Albert and Elizabeth Ann (Fickenscher) Stevens.&nbsp;

Marilyn graduated from Gothenburg High School, Gothenburg, NE, in 1952.&nbsp; She received her bachelor degree in elementary education from Sterling College in 1978.&nbsp; Marilyn then embarked on a 20-year career as a second-grade teacher at Union Valley Grade School; she loved teaching. In addition, Marilyn enjoyed traveling, dancing, and just being with people.&nbsp; First and foremost, Marilyn treasured time spent with her ENTIRE family and held a special bond with her seven grandchildren, loving them unconditionally.&nbsp; She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter HP and Emanuel Lutheran Church, Hutchinson.

On June 5, 1954, she married Norman Mann; he died September 15, 1977.&nbsp; Together, they shared over 23 years of marriage. Marilyn married Kenneth Bauman on November 29, 1980, in Hutchinson.&nbsp; They shared together almost 32 years of marriage prior to his death on May 31, 2012.&nbsp;

Marilyn is survived by:&nbsp; son, Vonn Mann (Cheryl) of Ellisville, MO, and their children and grandchildren, Abby Mulcahy (Craig), Bernie and Sydney, Joel Mann (Alyssa) and Davin, and Josh Mann (Caitlin), and son, Scott Mann (T. Pritchard-Mann) of Hutchinson, and their children and grandchildren, Taylor Elizabeth Lent (Mason), Adeline, Scott, and Herschel, Chandler Grace Best (Conner) and baby due April 2023, Jewel Stevens Mann, and Lucy Camryn Mann; stepsons and their families, James Bauman (Janice), Megan Bauman and Lindsey Bauman, Rick Bauman and his daughter, Katie Degraffenried; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by:&nbsp; her parents; husbands, Norman Mann and Kenneth Bauman; and siblings and their spouses, Genevieve Franzen (Reakus), Esther Hinze (Robert), and Lavern Stevens (Marian).

Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, December 10, 2022, at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 140 E. 30th&nbsp;Avenue, Hutchinson, with Pastor Del Strecker officiating.&nbsp; Private family inurnment will take place in the church columbarium.&nbsp; Cremation has taken place. Program growth and demand for nursing graduates requires the expansion and remodeling of the 2nd Floor of the Peel Center to allow for a second class of twenty registered nursing education students.

The Board is expected to accept the low bid from Harman Huffman Construction for the project&nbsp;in the amount of $1,287,000.

The project will be partially funded by an American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) through the Kansas Department of Commerce ($999,786.00) and the remaining portion through capital improvement funds.

HutchCC Board to approve Peel Center remodel Thursday

Pete T. Calvillo, 91, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 4, 2022, at Hospice House, Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; He was born in Hutchinson on November 9, 1931, to Joe and Micaela (Chavez) Calvillo.

Pete graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1949 and attended Hutchinson Community College.&nbsp; He was called to serve his country in the United States Army in 1952 during the Korean War.&nbsp; Cpl. Pete Calvillo was honorably discharged in 1954.&nbsp; Pete worked at Cessna Fluid and Power Division until 1974, and then finished his career at Dillons Stores Warehouse Division in 1992.

In his retirement years, he enjoyed spending time with family and his various hobbies, including tinkering with his 1930 Model A.&nbsp; Pete was a lifetime 4th&nbsp;degree honorary member of the Knights of Columbus Council 612, Hutchinson Collector Car Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and Teamsters Local 795.&nbsp; He was a longtime member of Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson.

On October 4, 1952, Pete married the love of his life, Henrietta Rodriguez, of Newton, KS.&nbsp; They shared over 70 years of marriage.

He is survived by:&nbsp; his wife, Henrietta; daughter, Karen (Larry) Hase; son, Ted (Janine) Calvillo; sister, Frances J. Garcia; grandchildren, Katie (Craig) Baskins, Emily (Chris) Calvillo, Michael J. (Lauren) Calvillo, Patrick Calvillo, Matthew Hase, Paul Hase, Marcus Hase, Allison (Tim) Penner, Peter (Michelle) Calvillo, Ryan (fiancée, MacKenzie) Calvillo, and Abigail Calvillo; and great-grandchildren, Robert Graves, Brenden Calvillo, Peyten Jane ‘PJ’ Calvillo, Myles Hase, Isaiah and Dominik Pina, Allysa and Carley Penner, and Isabella Calvillo.

Pete was preceded in death by:&nbsp; his infant brother; parents; infant grandchild; and oldest son, Michael Eugene Calvillo.

The GCAA Hall of Fame Class of 2022 was announced on Monday at the GCAA Hall of Fame Banquet at the Planet Hollywood resort.

Young, along with former Colorado State and current Louisville head coach Mark Crabtree, Oklahoma Christian coach David Lynn, and TCU head coach Bill Montigel were enshrined into the GCAA Hall of Fame.

Now in his 23rd season as the head coach of the Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team, Chris Young took a struggling Division II program and transformed it into a nationally elite NJCAA Division I powerhouse.

The last two seasons have been the most impressive as the Blue Dragons won the 2021 and 2022 NJCAA Division I National Championships. The 2022-23 Blue Dragons are currently ranked No. 2 in each of the two major men’s golf rankings.

The 2021 Blue Dragons captured the program’s first national title at The Rawls Club in Lubbock, Texas.

The Dragons defeated Odessa by nine strokes for the team championship. Ben Partridge defeated teammate Harry Crocket in a four-hole playoff to the win individual national championship. Along with Partridge and Crockett, Cameron Rios-Ceballos earned All-America honors.

One year later, the Blue Dragons went wire-to-wire for the second straight year and never looked back for a 20-stroke victory at the Odessa Country Club in Odessa, Texas. The Blue Dragons posted the largest winning margin in nearly 30 years and shot six strokes better than 2021 with a 72-hole total of 1,130.

A record four Blue Dragons earned All-America honors: Dominic Clemons, who lost a two-hole playoff for the individual national title, and Blake Saffell and Partridge were first-team All-Americans. Crockett was a third-team All-American.

In Young’s tenure, the Blue Dragons have won 10 Jayhawk Conference championships, nine Region VI titles, three District III titles and two national championships.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Dr. Ryan Diehl, son of Shirley and the late Richard Diehl, has been selected as the recipient of the 2022 National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) Ron Brandolini Award for Excellence at a Two-Year Institution. 

The award, presented by NCHC and the Valencia College Foundation, recognizes a two-year college honors director or faculty member for their outstanding contributions to the honors community. Recipients of the award must have contributed greatly to honors education and been a past recipient of a teaching award. Three letters of recommendation are also required.

Diehl has been affiliated with the Hutchinson Community College Honors Program since 2008 and became the program’s coordinator in 2011. He has worked closely with honors faculty and students to expand the program experiences both in and outside the classroom. He has mentored students who have gone on to be accepted into selective programs and win state and national scholarships.

Diehl has also been active with state, regional, and national honor organizations. He is a co-founder of the Kansas Honors Council and has helped organize the Kansas Honors Connections Conference for many years. He also has served as the archivist since 2012 and is the current president of the Great Plains Honors Council, which serves collegiate honors programs in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas. Under his leadership, the HutchCC Honors Program co-sponsored the 2022 Great Plains Honors Council Conference with the Wichita State University’s Dorothy and Bill Cohen Honors College.

At the national level, Diehl has served on NCHC committees and was one of twelve from across the country who helped create the NCHC Shared Principles and Practices of Honors Education. In addition to being on the national conference planning committee for the past two years, Diehl is a co-coordinator for NCHC’s Developing in Honors, a signature program that targets established honors deans and directors who are seeking new processes for honors education or are dealing with complex and challenging issues in honors.

Honors has been a key part of Diehl’s own academic work as well. He was an active member of an honors program when he was an undergraduate student and graduated with high honors. In 2020, Diehl completed his Ph.D. through University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Educational Administration program where his dissertation examined how honors programs at two-year institutions can provide a pathway to success for first-generation college students.

In addition to serving as the Honors Program Coordinator, Diehl is a professor and teaches both English and political science courses. He was also named HutchCC’s Dragon Educator of the Year in 2011 and 2012.

HutchCC faculty member wins national award

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville junior running back Tiyon Evans&nbsp;has declared for the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft and will forego his remaining collegiate eligibility,&nbsp;he announced Friday on social media.&nbsp;He will not play in Louisville’s upcoming bowl, as he is the first Cardinal to officially declare for the draft.

"First of all, I want to thank the Lord above for blessing me with the ability to do what I love to do,"&nbsp;he said in a graphic posted to Twitter.&nbsp;"All the trials and tribulations that I've overcome over the years have been a great piece of motivation.

"Secondly, to Card Nation, I want to thank everyone who has supported me and helped me along my journey through college. The memories and support will last with me forever. I want to thank Coach Satterfield and his staff for giving me a chance here at Louisville to be a card. I have made friendships that will last a lifetime."

The 5-foot-11, 210-pound running back joined the program over the offseason as a transfer from Tennessee, and instantly made a difference in Louisville's rushing attack. By the end of the regular season, he led the Cardinals in yards per carry at 6.3 on 83 total attempts, and had the most rushing touchdowns from the running back spot with six, second only to quarterback Malik Cunningham's 12.

However, the Hartsville, S.C. native struggled with an ankle injury at various points during the season, resulting in him playing in just eight games and starting only six of them. The injury limited him to just 525 rushing yards on the year, second amongst running backs on the team to Jawhar Jordan's 700.

Evans&nbsp;was Tennessee's leading rusher through most of the 2021 season, until another ankle injury forced him to sit for the final five games of the year. He ended that season with 525 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns on 81 attempts. He had a two-year stint in the JUCO ranks with Hutchinson Community College prior to his lone season with the Volunteers.

Louisville will find out their postseason draw on Sunday, Dec. 4 following the conclusion of conference championship weekend. The Cardinals finished the regular season at 7-5, and 4-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Melva Jane Tipton, 72, died November 23, 2022, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born March 1, 1950, in Cushing, OK, to Melvin Z. and Vaunita I. (Rodgers) Smith.

Melva graduated from Cushing High School in 1968, and received two associates degrees from Hutchinson Community College in 1993 and 1995.&nbsp; A resident of Hutchinson since 1972, she worked as a registered nurse at the Medical Center in Hutchinson before retiring from the City of Hutchinson as the Deputy City Clerk.

On December 23, 1978, she married Melvin Everett Tipton, in Hutchinson.&nbsp; Melva’s greatest treasure in life was spending quality time with Melvin.

Melva is survived by her loving husband of almost 44 years, Melvin Tipton, Jr. of Hutchinson; sons, Melvin L. Tipton III and Kevin D. Tipton, both of Hutchinson; brother, James Smith of Edmond, OK; grandchildren, Andrew Sanburn, Jacob Knudsen, Katana Tipton, Maleah Tipton, and Erin Tipton; two great-grandsons, Arthur Wesley Sanburn and Amitai Holmes Tipton; and numerous extended family members.

She was preceded in death by:&nbsp; her parents; sister, Pat Golliver; and daughter, Jennifer Knudsen.

Cremation has taken place.&nbsp; Melva requested no services.&nbsp; Friends may sign her book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday at Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS&nbsp; 67501.

The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team looks to rebound from a two-game losing streak as the Blue Dragons travel to play longtime rival Butler at 4 p.m. Saturday in El Dorado's Power Plant.

The meeting will be the 197th in the two stories programs histories. The Blue Dragons own a 128-67 overall record over Butler. Last season, the Blue Dragons swept the Grizzlies in two meetings. Two years ago, Butler swept the season series against the Blue Dragons.

Hutchinson has dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season, falling to No. 21 Barton 101-75 last Saturday at the Sports Arena and 111-95 on the road Wednesday at Cowley.

The Blue Dragons (8-3, 2-3) continue to lead the Jayhawk Conference and are now No. 2 in the NJCAA in scoring offense at 108.2 points per game.

Blue Dragon redshirt freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/franklin_aaron_5xfv">Aaron Franklin</a>&nbsp;leads the nation with 279 points scored and is fifth in the NJCAA in scoring average at 25.4 points per game.

Franklin comes off his fourth 30-point game of the season after scoring 34 points in Hutchinson's loss to Cowley on Wednesday in Arkansas City. Freshman guard&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/frierson_tyreece_qllh">Ty Frierson</a>&nbsp;had 23 points with four 3-pointers and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/garrison_jayden_ffgr">Jayden Garrison</a>&nbsp;added 12 points.

After shooting 55.3 percent in the first half, the Blue Dragons went cold in the second half, shooting only 33.3 percent. The Dragons and Tigers were tied at 76, but Cowley outscored the Dragons 35-19 over the final 8 minutes of the game to secure the victory.

Butler enters Saturday's game with an impressive signature and comeback win on Wednesday over No. 11 Coffeyville. The Grizzlies trailed 32-18 at halftime and roared back to outscore the Red Ravens 53-32 in the second half and came away with a 70-64 road victory. Tahjae Hill sparked the comeback with 20 points off the bench for Butler. Isaiah Williams chipped in 12 points. Butler's defense forced 17 Red Raven turnovers.

The 196 games played against Butler represent the most games played by the Blue Dragons against any single opponent. The 128 wins vs. the Grizzlies are the third most against a single opponent. The Blue Dragons own 151 wins over Pratt and 140 victories over Garden City.

🏀 Blue Dragons, Grizzlies to clash for 196th time on Saturday

Normally when the Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team and the Butler Grizzlies get together, there is a lot on the line.

Saturday's 2 p.m. encounter at the Power Plant in El Dorado will be no different for yet another Top 25 showdown between the two Jayhawk Conference powers.

However, both the No. 11 Blue Dragons and No. 222 Grizzlies enter Saturday's contest smarting a bit as both Hutchinson and Butler come off losses in midweek games on the road.

The Blue Dragon women fell behind Cowley 9-0 before scoring, rallied to take a one-point lead, but a late 6-0 Tiger run was too much to overtime in a 55-49 loss on Wednesday at Cowley.

The Blue Dragons had a season-low offensive out and hit a season-low 3 for 21 from 3-point range.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/duffy_monae_4kqq">Monae Duffy</a>&nbsp;led the Blue Dragons.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/williams_mya_wx3b">Mya Williams</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/armstead_journey_v4yx">Journey Armstead</a>&nbsp;had 11 points each.

Butler also was right in the thick of its game on Wednesday at Coffeyville. Tied at 49 after three quarters, the Grizzlies were outscored 19-11 in the final 10 minutes and dropped a 68-60 decision to the Red Ravens for their first loss of the season. Jada Knight had 11 points to pace the Grizzlies.

As rough as things have been for the Blue Dragons offensively, the defense has been stellar, especially over the last three games. Hutchinson is allowing only 54.3 points per game. Opposing teams have shot only 32.1 percent and the Dragons are forcing an average of 19 turnovers per game.

Once again, the Blue Dragons face one of the top defensive teams in the KJCCC in Butler. The Grizzlies are allowing 55.2 points per game, which is second-best in the Jayhawk. Butler is allowing opponents to shoot 38.9 percent and the Grizzlies lead the league in steals with 16.1 picks per game.

The Blue Dragons complete a stretch of playing on the road in 4 of 5 times. So far the Dragons are 2-2 in that stretch.

The next week is also a critical week with a home game against Coffeyville and road game at Dodge City next Week.

Tied at 49 after three quarters, the Grizzlies were outscored 19-11 in the final 10 minutes and dropped a 68-60 decision to the Red Ravens for their first loss of the season. Jada Knight had 11 points to pace the Grizzlies.As rough as things have been for the Blue Dragons offensively, the defense has been stellar, especially over the last three games. Hutchinson is allowing only 54.3 points per game. Opposing teams have shot only 32.1 percent and the Dragons are forcing an average of 19 turnovers per game.Once again, the Blue Dragons face one of the top defensive teams in the KJCCC in Butler. The Grizzlies are allowing 55.2 points per game, which is second-best in the Jayhawk. Butler is allowing opponents to shoot 38.9 percent and the Grizzlies lead the league in steals with 16.1 picks per game.The Blue Dragons complete a stretch of playing on the road in 4 of 5 times. HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Starting today, Dec. 2, join the Hutchinson Friends of the Zoo for the first three Fridays and Saturdays of December for the seventh annual Nights Before Christmas light show. &nbsp;

“Nights Before Christmas is a fundraiser for Hutchinson Friends of the Zoo, it's one of our largest fundraisers,” Nicole Mantz, Director of Hutchinson Zoo, said. “Hutchinson Friends of the Zoo is our nonprofit arm, and they support the zoo, both in our regular operations and in creating new and improved areas here at the zoo.” &nbsp;

According to Mantz, in the past, the Nights Before Christmas event has received as much as $5,000 to $7,000. &nbsp;

“Those funds go towards the daily operations of [Hutchinson] Friends of the Zoo and the improvements,” Mantz said. &nbsp;

Mantz said this is Hutchinson Friends of the Zoo’s largest fundraiser and the Hutchinson Friends of the Zoo are taking a different approach to this year’s Nights Before Christmas. &nbsp;

“We have lights throughout the zoo, so we have a walk-through light show this year,” Mantz said. “In the past it’s been just a light show set to music, that you just stand and watch and listen to the music. Now you’ll get to walk through the experience and be a part of it, as you listen to the music.” &nbsp;

Along with the Hutchinson Zoo’s light display, other&nbsp;lights are provided by other local nonprofit groups. &nbsp;

Taking the cold into account, there will be a heated portion of the zoo that will allow people to sit with their refreshments. &nbsp;

The Blue Dragons of SkillsUSA and Hutchinson Community College have digitally enhanced some of the Hutchinson Zoo’s areas to help exceed expectations with extraordinary displays.&nbsp;

“Our Nature Play area will be previewing again, and so there’s some Christmas lights out there,” Mantz said. “And then of course the&nbsp;train. You’ll be able to ride the train . . . and we have some kind of stories and animals getting ready for Christmas as you ride the train that you get to see.”&nbsp;

Following the light show, cookies and cocoa will be available while people wait with their children to visit Santa Claus. &nbsp;

Cost of entry to the event throughout December is $10 per person, and family packs are available. Family packs are $30 for&nbsp;four individuals. Tickets are buy three, get one free. &nbsp;

Tickets&nbsp;can be purchased the day of and online on the Hutchinson Zoo’s <a href="http://www.hutchinsonzoo.org/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=76" target="_blank">website</a>.&nbsp;

Tickets are non-refundable and must be provided at the gate to ensure entry. &nbsp;

People can pick any day to attend from Dec. 2-3, Dec. 9-10, and Dec. 16-17.&nbsp;

Tickets include access to the light show, refreshments, pictures with Santa, and the holiday train ride. &nbsp;

Donations are always welcome. Volunteers will be present to collect cash donations each night.&nbsp;

Nights Before Christmas throughout December

Keith A. Wetzel, 76, of Hutchinson, passed after a courageous battle against an unyielding illness at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born May 30, 1945, in Parkville, Missouri, to George and Tena Wetzel.

Keith married Maribell S. Chiles on March 30, 1985. &nbsp;His love for family was obvious to everyone who knew him. Keith would say God’s greatest blessing to him was his son, Reed, and granddaughters, Amity and Isla.

Keith graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1963, and attended Hutchinson Community College and Wichita State University. &nbsp;He enlisted in the Army Reserves and was an MP in the 346th&nbsp;Military Police Company for those years enlisted.

Keith started his retailing career working for Calhouns in Wichita. He also worked for Klines and Sheplers, furthering his career in men’s clothing. &nbsp;Keith was part-owner of Havners, where he excelled in buying and selling men’s fine clothing. In addition, he and his father were partners in T &amp; G Investments for twenty years. During that time, they invested in local real estate and stock.

Keith had a love for cars before he could even drive. During his lifetime, he enjoyed owning many classic cars, which he refurbished and entered into various car shows. Keith’s favorite car was a 1958 Impala that placed in many local car shows. He enjoyed meeting and discussing the finer points of not only his own cars but those of others.

Keith enjoyed golf, playing cards, and the comradery of his friends as a member of Prairie Dunes Country Club. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, where Keith attended as a child and rejoined when returning to Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Keith was also a Boy Scout leader for many years. He loved camping and helping boys earn a variety of merit badges. Keith and his son, Reed shared many fond memories participating in summer camps, weekend outings, and learning different skills.

Keith is survived by: his wife of 37 years, Maribell of Hutchinson; son, Reed Allen Wetzel, and wife, Danielle; two granddaughters, Amity Marie and Isla Sue, all of Wichita, Kansas; and a sister, Dr. Linda Erickson of Hutchinson.

He was preceded by his parents, George and Tena Wetzel.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 5, 2022, at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 140 E. 30th&nbsp;Avenue, with Pastor Del Strecker officiating.&nbsp;&nbsp; Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson, with military honors conducted by the Kansas Army National Guard.&nbsp; Friends may call from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Hutchinson Animal Shelter or Emanuel Lutheran Church, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS&nbsp; 67501.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Glenn Koster, Sr., a resident of South Hutchinson who holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Western Governors University (WGU), has been named to the fully online, nonprofit university’s 2022 class of Distinguished Graduates. &nbsp;

The award is given to WGU alumni who have used their education to help improve the lives of others in their communities. &nbsp;

Koster was one of 25 Distinguished Graduates to be recently recognized by WGU.&nbsp;

Koster, who overcame many challenges in his youth and is now an ordained pastor, has dedicated his life to helping others. &nbsp;

Abandoned by his birth parents and moved through the foster care system until he was successfully adopted, Koster has made headlines for his walks across the country. &nbsp;

One walked was in 2018-2019, when he walked 4,310 miles from Florida to Washington in support of children in foster care. &nbsp;

His leadership and awareness efforts have helped raise more than $10,000 for Central Kansas children's organizations. &nbsp;

He earned his bachelor’s degree from WGU in 2013. nearly 40 years after he first attempted college. He&nbsp;has used his degree to improve effectiveness and help those in need. &nbsp;

Koster is also a published author, with two additional books slated for completion this year. &nbsp;

His first book is titled,&nbsp;Life is a Long Story Short: Lessons from Living through Abuse, Abandonment, and Adoption.&nbsp;

“Getting my degree from WGU meant the world to me, and this award proves that my education was worthwhile,” Koster said. “This recognition gives me credibility, which is useful for what I seek to do going forward."&nbsp;

Each year, WGU accepts nominations for Distinguished Graduate candidates online. &nbsp;

Duggan is the first quarterback to earn the award since Kyler Murray (OU) in 2018.</li><li>Felix Anudike-Uzomah is the fifth K-State player to win Defensive Player of the Year, and the first since Jordan Willis in 2016. Arthur Brown (2012), Terence Newman (2002) and Mark Simoneau (1999) comprise the other Wildcats who have received the distinction.</li><li>Dillon Gabriel captured Oklahoma’s fifth Offensive Newcomer of the Year award, joining an esteemed list that includes Jalen Hurts (2019), Dede Westbrook (2015), Adrian Peterson (2004) and Josh Heupel (1999).&nbsp;</li><li>TCU’s Johnny Hodges became the second Horned Frog to win Defensive Newcomer of the Year, joining Ben Banogu (2017).</li><li>Richard Reese is the third Baylor player and first Baylor running back to be selected as Offensive Freshman of the Year, joining quarterbacks Charlie Brewer (2017) and Robert Griffin III (2008).</li><li>Kendal Daniels is the second consecutive Defensive Freshman of the Year from Oklahoma State, and the fourth winner from the school. Last season, Collin Oliver (2021) joined Shaun Lewis (2010) and Andre Sexton (2006) as Cowboys who have earned the distinction.&nbsp;</li><li>Derius Davis is the first TCU player to garner Special Teams Player of the Year.&nbsp;</li><li>Cooper Beebe joins Dalton Risner (2018) and B.J. Finney (2014) as Offensive Lineman of the Year from Kansas State.</li><li>Felix Anudike-Uzomah becomes the first two-time winner of Defensive Lineman of the Year since the inception of the award in 2006. It is the fifth time a Wildcat has been honored, joining Anudike-Uzomah’s previous award (2021), Jordan Willis (2016), Ryan Mueller (2013) and Meshak Williams (2012).</li><li>Sonny Dykes has been named Chuck Neinas Big 12 Coach of the Year. He is the only coach to win the award in their first year as head coach of the program. He and his dad, the late Spike Dykes (Texas Tech, 1996), are the only father-son duo in the Big 12 to win the award.</li><li>Oklahoma has won the most individual awards in the 27-year history of the Big 12 with 48. K-State is second (37), followed by Texas (32), Oklahoma State (25), Baylor (23), Iowa State (22), TCU (14), West Virginia (10), Kansas (8) and Texas Tech (8). &nbsp;</li>
