HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Somehow, someway, the Hutchinson Monarchs found a way to win on EAGLE Night Tuesday. The Monarchs scored 11 runs in the bottom of the eighth to erase a six-run deficit to defeat the visiting Aviators.

The win didn't come without controversy. Hutch cut the lead to four when Blake Bradford was called out for interference on the base paths.

The hit barrage kept coming and forced a rare Haysville throwing error. The Monarchs took advantage of the error to send 15 batters to the plate in the bottom of the eighth.

Jaden Gustafson continued to come up with big hits with three RBI's on 2-for-4 hitting. Cooper Wesslund also knocked in three runs, going 2-for-5.

Blake Bradford homered to give the Monarchs the lead 2-1 in the fourth inning before the Aviators regained the lead, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth.

Camden Cornelius came on in relief to get the win. Reed Scott came on to close out the ninth after the first two batters got on with walks . Scott forced an infield-fly-rule out and then the Monarch's Sacket caught a rocket and doubled up the runner that was at second base for the final out with the double-play.

The evening started with an exhibition of 1860's baseball by the Hutchinson Baseball Club going five fun innings, showing the crowd of 70-plus that braved the heat how the game was played a couple centuries back.

Tuesday was also EAGLE Radio Night for <a href="https://streamdb5web.securenetsystems.net/v5/KHUT">Country 102.9</a>, <a href="https://streamdb7web.securenetsystems.net/ce/index.cfm?stationCallSign=KHMY2">My 93-1</a> and <a href="https://radio.securenetsystems.net/v5/KWBW">KWBW</a>. General Manager Matt Althouse threw out the first pitch. EAGLE Radio is the parent company of Hutch Post.

Hutch (12-5) will match up with the Aviators (14-5) Wednesday night with first pitch set for 7.

⚾  Monarchs get 11-run rally in 8th on EAGLE Night

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The USD 308 Hutchinson Public Schools Board of Education held their regularly scheduled meeting Monday, June 24th, at the USD 308 Administrative Center, 1520 N. Plum.

During the Superintendent remarks, Superintendent Dr. Johnson mentioned that the next meeting is the Organization Meeting during which the Board will elect President and Vice President. Current board president, Laura Corey has served in the role since Feb 2024.

There were three Board Action Items. The first item,&nbsp;2024-2025 District Handbooks- FIRST LOOK. The District has worked to streamline handbooks over the past few years. The handbooks, when approved will allow for combined district policies and procedures to replace building level policies and procedures where available and reduce the number of future approvals required. The recommendation for approval will come during the Organization Meeting held in July.

The Board of Education has approved a motion to approve $862,285 from the Reno County Childcare Taskforce, a combination of Accelerator grant and ARPA funds, to expand the USD 308 Child Care program for children aged 0-3. This was the second agenda item and listed as&nbsp;Child Care Expansion.

Hutchinson Public Schools has a long-standing commitment to early childhood education, proudly being the first district in Reno County to establish a child care center. The USD 308 Child Care Center has been serving Hutchinson Public Schools and the community for nearly 25 years, since 1999. With decades of experience, families have entrusted our dedicated staff with the care and education of their young children, building a reputation of trust and excellence.

These grants, funded by the Department of Children and Families (DCF) and Kansas Office of Recovery, will substantially boost local child care capabilities.&nbsp;All projects are required to meet project readiness standards and at least a 25% matching funds for their respective projects. This is a crucial step toward reducing the child care deficit in Reno County, with around 1500 families wait-listed for childcare. The Task Force remains committed to advocating for high-quality, accessible, and affordable child care in the region. During the Board’s consideration of the grant, Heather Faulkner, Director of Abundant Life Childcare, and Consultant to the Reno County Childcare Taskforce, addressed the Board, “We are hopeful that you all are wanting to expand childcare. There is a current need of about 1500 slots for ages zero to three. The big need is for zero to three.”

The third action item,&nbsp;June 2024 Board Policy Updates.&nbsp;There were two policy updates being considered. The first document outlines recommended actions on various Board policies and is titled on the agenda documents as June 2024 Red Lined All in One. This was tabled. The second policy, JBC and JBCC was approved 6-0. JBC is the Enrollment (revised). This policy was revised to remove the language regarding nonresident students due to changes in state law. Provisions regarding nonresident students are now in Policy JBCC.

JBCC Reads: Prior to adopting this policy, the board of education shall call and hold a hearing on the proposed policy. The board of education shall provide notice of such hearing, which shall include the time, date and place of the public hearing to be held on the proposed policy. Such notice shall be published at least once each week for two consecutive weeks in a newspaper of general circulation in the school district and shall also be posted on the school district's website. This policy was created to outline the requirements for the enrollment of nonresident students, including required actions such as determining capacity, accepting applications, and admitting nonresident students. This change was necessitated by the passage of S Sub for HB 2567 and H Sub for SB 113. This law requires the board to adopt a policy.

Board Discussions- Lance Patterson mentioned that during contract negotiations today, enrollment fees were discussed. He questioned their necessity and benefit. The Board provided guidance to Dr. Johnson that they would like to reassess the District’s enrollment fees. The topic will be presented at a future Board meeting.

The&nbsp;Superintendent’s Consent Agenda&nbsp;was passed 6-0. Items within the Consent Agenda were: Treasurer’s Report – May 2024, Annual TMA License Renewal, Revised Copier Lease Agreement, C5 and C6 2021-2024 Final Head Start Grant Reports, Annual Milk Bid 2024-2025, Essdack Erate Services, Worker’s Compensation Renewal Proposal 2024-2025, Annual End-of-Year Fundraiser Report, End-of-Year Closeout and Transfers Authorization, Surplus Items, Grants, Gifts to Schools.

The Board went into Executive Session to discuss non-elected personnel matters, and negotiations. The personnel report was approved unanimously.

USD 308 meeting notes

This is day 8 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Drew Hubbell, who farms with his dad and uncle near Spearville in Ford County, reports harvest started on June 10, and they still have about a week to go. Fields are wet from recent rains, so they have had to move from field to field to find dry enough wheat. The rains on the mature wheat have taken about 10 to 15 bushels per acre off their yield potential and caused some lodging issues. Some fields have been hailed on up to three times.

Hubbell said they needed one of these rains in April. They had so much hope going into early spring but received no moisture between February and the middle of May.

Overall, though, they are pleased with this year’s harvest. T158 continues to be a workhorse variety for them year after year. Even after the lack of spring moisture, yields are ranging from 15 or 20 bushels per acre to 60 bushels per acre – sometimes within the same field. Test weights, even after several rounds of rain, are still averaging 58 to 59 pounds per bushel, and protein is 12 to 13 percent. Hubbell said there are a lot of 40 to 50 bushel yields in the area.

Jacqueline Leffler, of Lyon County, near Emporia, started harvesting on the 10th of June and just wrapped up Tuesday afternoon. She was excited to report that their wheat has “been yielding phenomenally,” with yields anywhere from 50 to 70 bushels per acre and test weights so high that they had to lighten their loads going to the elevator.&nbsp;

During the spring, they experienced a substantial amount of moisture that often invites stripe rust and disease. They combatted this opportunity for damage with fungicide which paid off resulting in a great wheat crop.&nbsp;

Jacqueline noted a challenge that not just the Lefflers’, but many farmers faced this year was a shortage in good help. She said that, “It seems like the stars have to align to find enough people to get everything done.”&nbsp;

Despite some minor issues, she was excited about a great year for their wheat and was planting soybeans as part of their double cropping system. Lefflers double-crop almost 100% of their acres with soybeans.&nbsp;

For the Berning family near Scott City, in Scott County, this is one of their better harvests.&nbsp;

“This crop was unexpected,” he said, “Maybe some people were expecting their crop to look like this, but we weren’t.”

Starting a week ahead of normal, their yields have been highly variable with their harvested wheat exceeding 70 bushels per acre on dryland; however, with the dry spring conditions, they abandoned just under half of their wheat, which was all continuous behind corn.

Proteins for the Bernings have ranged anywhere from 14 to 15.5 percent on their wheat, with test weights above 62 pounds per bushel.

“We make sure to incorporate T158 every year,” Berning said. “It’s dad’s favorite variety, so we make sure it’s put in the ground every fall.”

Berning is also cutting KS Dallas, Canvas and Tatanka, and is pleasantly surprised with how it is looking.&nbsp;

“It seems we just got lucky this year,” he said, “if you go less than 25 miles north, guys are cutting completely different yields.”

The Berning family is wrapping up harvest and expects to finish up by June 27, just in time to enjoy next week’s holiday weekend.&nbsp;

Steve Clanton of Minneapolis in Ottawa County, started harvest around June 21, which is a week earlier than normal and wrapped up Tuesday evening.&nbsp;

Clanton is seeing yields anywhere from averages of 30 to 50 bushels per acre, which he is describing this year as “strange.”&nbsp;

“Even where I thought there was going to be good wheat, it wasn’t as good as I was expecting it to be,” Clanton said, “It didn’t make sense.”

Test weights ranged anywhere from 59 to 62 pounds per bushel.&nbsp;

The next harvest report will be a special edition on hard white wheat to be published Thursday, June 27, 2024.&nbsp;

 </figure>AMELIA SCHATZ Kansas WheatThis is day 8 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.Drew Hubbell, who farms with his dad and uncle near Spearville in Ford County, reports harvest started on June 10, and they still have about a week to go. Fields are wet from recent rains, so they have had to move from field to field to find dry enough wheat. The rains on the mature wheat have taken about 10 to 15 bushels per acre off their yield potential and caused some lodging issues. Some fields have been hailed on up to three times.Hubbell said they needed one of these rains in April. They had so much hope going into early spring but received no moisture between February and the middle of May.Overall, though, they are pleased with this year’s harvest. T158 continues to be a workhorse variety for them year after year. Even after the lack of spring moisture, yields are ranging from 15 or 20 bushels per acre to 60 bushels per acre – sometimes within the same field. Test weights, even after several rounds of rain, are still averaging 58 to 59 pounds per bushel, and protein is 12 to 13 percent. Hubbell said there are a lot of 40 to 50 bushel yields in the area.Jacqueline Leffler, of Lyon County, near Emporia, started harvesting on the 10th of June and just wrapped up Tuesday afternoon. She was excited to report that their wheat has “been yielding phenomenally,” with yields anywhere from 50 to 70 bushels per acre and test weights so high that they had to lighten their loads going to the elevator.&nbsp;During the spring, they experienced a substantial amount of moisture that often invites stripe rust and disease. They combatted this opportunity for damage with fungicide which paid off resulting in a great wheat crop.&nbsp;Jacqueline noted a challenge that not just the Lefflers’, but many farmers faced this year was a shortage in good help. She said that, “It seems like the stars have to align to find enough people to get everything done.”&nbsp;Despite some minor issues, she was excited about a great year for their wheat and was planting soybeans as part of their double cropping system. Lefflers double-crop almost 100% of their acres with soybeans.&nbsp;For the Berning family near Scott City, in Scott County, this is one of their better harvests.&nbsp;“This crop was unexpected,” he said, “Maybe some people were expecting their crop to look like this, but we weren’t.”Starting a week ahead of normal, their yields have been highly variable with their harvested wheat exceeding 70 bushels per acre on dryland; however, with the dry spring conditions, they abandoned just under half of their wheat, which was all continuous behind corn.Proteins for the Bernings have ranged anywhere from 14 to 15.5 percent on their wheat, with test weights above 62 pounds per bushel.“We make sure to incorporate T158 every year,” Berning said. “It’s dad’s favorite variety, so we make sure it’s put in the ground every fall.”Berning is also cutting KS Dallas, Canvas and Tatanka, and is pleasantly surprised with how it is looking.&nbsp;“It seems we just got lucky this year,” he said, “if you go less than 25 miles north, guys are cutting completely different yields.”The Berning family is wrapping up harvest and expects to finish up by June 27, just in time to enjoy next week’s holiday weekend.&nbsp;Steve Clanton of Minneapolis in Ottawa County, started harvest around June 21, which is a week earlier than normal and wrapped up Tuesday evening.&nbsp;Clanton is seeing yields anywhere from averages of 30 to 50 bushels per acre, which he is describing this year as “strange.”&nbsp;“Even where I thought there was going to be good wheat, it wasn’t as good as I was expecting it to be,” Clanton said, “It didn’t make sense.”Test weights ranged anywhere from 59 to 62 pounds per bushel.&nbsp;The next harvest report will be a special edition on hard white wheat to be published Thursday, June 27, 2024.&nbsp;The 2024 Harvest Reports are brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council. Car runs into downtown business 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A play penned by an area director is taking the stage Thursday and Friday at the Flag Theater.&nbsp;

"I landed on this idea about a few years ago, and finally it's come to fruition," said Nicholas Amezola, the director of Concrete Garden. "I always call it semi-autobiographical, because I've dramatized a lot of it, but a lot of the experiences of it, I've actually experienced myself."

The story is going to be dramatically read.

"There's not a full choreography or set and costumes. It'll just be 13 people, just having music stands in front of them, with the script in front of them, and we're just acting and singing at each other," It'll still be an acted-out experience, rather than just monotone reading, but there won't be a whole song and dance, literally."

The story is about the main character's spiritual journey.

"He starts off as just not believing in anything because of an experience he had with his father, who passed away," Amezola said. "As he progresses through the story, he learns to grow more in his faith. He loses it when COVID comes around, and at the end of the story, it's kind of ambiguous whether he's going to go back to it or not. Yeah, it's just kind of outlining what a religious journey can look like."

Concrete Garden is this Thursday and Friday, June 27 and 28 at the Flag Theater. It will start at 7 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door. They're just $5.

Heat Advisory in effect for Tuesday afternoon

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Fire Marshal Mike Cain says that after changes last year, the regulations are the same this year as they were in 2023.

"The dates are June 30 through July 4," Cain said. "Shoot dates are the same. It was a pretty major change. We went back to basically everything, aerial fireworks, along with the old Safe and Sane. It's the same throughout the county now."

Firefighters still do patrol around the city during the shooting period.

"The complaint calls are coming down," Cain said. "They're still up there. We'll probably do over the entire five days, we'll probably do 50 to 60 just complaint calls, but those are tending to come down. Most of what we do is our patrol, is our just driving around. We see something, we stop and talk to people, let them know they can't be now, they can't be shooting out in the street and doing stuff like that."

The reason you can't shoot in the street is the danger from cars, not from fireworks.

"That seems to be our biggest complaint on both sides," Cain said. "You have everybody that wants to shoot and wants to shoot out in the street because they can't shoot in their driveway because of trees and so forth. Their biggest argument is it's safer to shoot out in the street away from the house. The problem becomes, on these side residential streets, it is so dark that even as we're patrolling, until we roll up on somebody actually out in the street, we can't see them unless they're shooting, and the way people drive these days, they're not going to be paying attention driving up and down those streets. So if you've got especially little kids out in the middle of the street shooting those off, it's a dangerous situation."

Cain said to talk to your neighbors ahead of the opening of the fireworks stands, so that everyone is on the same page about what needs to be done to keep everyone safe.

Fireworks dates in Hutch are June 30-July 4

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Adopt-A-Pet event at the EAGLE Media studios was a success Saturday, but that has not come close to fixing the overall problem. 

"We had 6 dogs at the adoption event and 3 cats at the shelter get adopted on Saturday," said Michaela Schommer with the Hutchinson Animal Shelter.&nbsp; "We also took in 2 dogs and 4 cats that day. Sunday was much the same, 3 adoptions and two dogs reclaimed by their families, but we took in 6 animals. It’s a revolving door and the incoming numbers are often higher than the outgoing numbers."

Unfortunately, some area shelters have just made it a habit not to take in any more pets if they are full, and so that makes shelters like Hutchinson's that determine capacity on a case-by-case basis, less likely to get emptied to the point that it solves the problem.&nbsp;

Next event in CHIP speaker series is Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Brush Up Hutch program, a partnership between Interfaith Housing &amp; Community Services and the City of Hutchinson, has witnessed significant growth and expansion, thanks to substantial funding from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

This initiative, which focuses on providing much-needed exterior paint for homes, was originally only available for residents in Hutchinson. With new ARPA funding, it has broadened its reach to encompass Reno County, amplifying its impact. Prior to the infusion of ARPA funds, the program averaged the painting of five homes per year with a $10,000 city allocation, which often remained underutilized. In contrast, the 2023 program saw the issuance of 95 vouchers to participants and the expenditure of $113,958 in ARPA funding, underscoring a dramatic increase in scale and effectiveness.

This expansion is a testament to the power of community collaboration and adequate financial support. The Brush Up Hutch program not only addresses the practical needs of homeowners but also fosters a sense of community pride and cohesion.

“We moved into this house in 2013, and the exterior was in dire need of repair and painting. I contacted Interfaith Housing, completed a simple application process, and was thrilled to learn that they would provide the paint for us,” said Ron Nisly, a recipient of the Brush Up Hutch program. “It was exhilarating to participate in a community project like this and to witness the collective effort to enhance our neighborhood. When residents take pride in their homes, it has a positive ripple effect throughout the community.”

Red, White & Brews Friday and Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach received news Monday in an ongoing case where several states are challenging the Biden Administration's authority to forgive student loans.

"That seems to be a pretty naked political ploy to win the votes of people who may have student loan debt by getting out there, right after the Supreme Court last year said they couldn't do it, then they said, well, we'll just do it again and we'll do it in a slightly different way," Kobach said. "Even though the Supreme Court very clearly said this was beyond the executive branch's authority to just unilaterally forgive these debts."

Kobach's office has argued that the administration is reading authority into a statute that just isn't there.

"The decision was based on a number of factors and the Biden administration is trying to say, well, we claimed our authority under the HEROES Act, which was a post 9-11 act, and now we're claiming authority under the Higher Education Act," Kobach said.&nbsp; "They're saying it's different this time, but in fact, most of the same arguments apply and their claim that the statute itself gives them authorization to do this, it's a pretty weak claim."

The statute says that the Department of Education can change the terms of loan repayment.

"Maybe they extend the number of years or change the interest rate, but it still calls for the word repayment," Kobach said. "The Biden administration is saying, well, we can change the terms so that in effect there's no repayment, and that's part of the argument we've been having in the court."

An injunction preventing the program from being implemented was ordered on Monday by Judge Daniel Crabtree.

RENO COUNTY —A Reno County man was injured in an accident just after 1:30 p.m. Monday.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Cadillac DTS driven by Edward E. Rush, 75, Abbyville, was westbound on U.S. 50 three miles west of Burrton. The car crossed the roadway, entered the south ditch, struck a tree and traveled through a fence.

EMS transported Rush to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.&nbsp; He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Reno Co. man hospitalized after car crash into tree, fence

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — DCI Park, located at the corner of 2nd and Main, will have a new look on Mondays.&nbsp;

"Every Monday, what you see here today, is pretty much going to be here every Monday," Executive Director of Hutch Rec Tony Finlay said.&nbsp; "We'll have two food trucks. We'll have yard games. We are bringing in shade. Depending on how the weather goes, we might bring in water. I don't know. We'll see how that goes but looking forward to the Mondays moving forward."&nbsp;

DCI Inc., Hutchinson Community Foundation and Hutch Rec hosted the kick-off event for Project Park at DCI Park on Monday, June 24.&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/b67d25c0-4abe-4680-bbda-c486483e118e"> The project is a collaborative effort across multiple organizations designed to transform underutilized spaces in Hutchinson to better serve the community and foster connections.</a>

"We've been trying this in different places across the county and community for many years in different ways," Hutchinson Community Foundation Director of Strategic Initiatives Kari Mailloux said. "What's different about this point is that the Kansas Arts Commission invited Hutchinson to be a part of a learning cohort across the region a year ago called the Engaging Placemaking for Innovative Communities (EPIC Pilot Program)."

Mailloux said a group of seven spent multiple sessions learning about creative placemaking and thinking about how they might approach that in Hutchinson.&nbsp;

"We looked at the fact that the Downtown Master Plan was also about to be finished and thinking about what the community was saying they wanted more of was active public spaces," Mailloux said. "Places for people. And that's what we love about placemaking, that its people driven, design second. People inform how you use spaces and what they become and so that felt perfect for this space, and perfect as a partner for DCI that has this beautiful space and they are kind of willing to loan this space to community partners in lots of different ways throughout the year. So we brought this idea to DCI and they said yeah let's try it."&nbsp;

President and CEO of DCI Inc. Sarah Fankhauser said DCI is honored to be chosen as one of the first locations in town to be able to share their space.&nbsp;

"This is just a great avenue for all of Hutchinson but a little bit selfishly, this is an incredible for our employees at DCI as well," Fankhauser said. "We are very very strong on supporting community at DCI and supporting local and supporting Hutchinson, and this is just a win-win for all of us. Of course to DCI but then all the rest of us in the community as well. We look forward to visiting other locations as well, but also really, really enjoy welcoming everybody from the town here to join in with us every Monday so I hope you all are enjoying yourselves and we look forward to many more Mondays. "

Finlay said in addition to the traditional Monday activities at DCI Park, some special events on Saturday mornings and implementation of temporary art installations is in the works as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to information provided by Hutch Rec, Project Park is supported by the Hutchinson Community Foundation - Fund for Reno County, Patterson Family Foundation and the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.&nbsp;

Project Park starts at DCI Park

HESSTON - Gunnar Lewis knew he wasn’t a DI baseball prospect coming out of Hesston High.

“I’m blessed, it hits you early in high school that you won’t be a DI out of high school kinda guy,” the recent Swather graduate said. “So I looked in to juco options early and Butler was always my favorite. I’m grateful and excited for this opportunity.”

The all-time hits leader at Hesston chose Butler this spring.

“My goal is to have two great years and find a home at a DI spot or a great DII,” Lewis said.

The Hesston middle infielder describes himself as quick and athletic.

“With a little power can hit a lot of doubles and have a couple leave the yard here and there,” he said. “Fast runner, aggressive on the bases and stretch singles to doubles and doubles to triples.”

I had a hit streak up to 29 games. Hesston is a young program and I’m excited to see who breaks the record.”“Passionate, attention to detail, fierce, willing and wanting to win, big time,” Gunner Goalden said of Lewis.Lewis batted .450 his senior season with 11 doubles, three triples and one home run. He started every varsity game in his career except for two because of covid. Lewis ended with a .400 career batting average with 23 doubles, 11 triples and three homers.“I would describe Gunnar Lewis as a great teammate,” Keldon Lange said. “He motivated me to work hard in practice when we would do running or a team competition. He would make sure to be the one leading and to encourage his teammates a lot. He’s a great person, too.”“I’ve always worked to better my craft,” Lewis said. “I’ve had a great hitting coach the last couple years who has really carried me to where I am today. Staying motivated and trying to love the journey instead of always thinking about the destination.”“Gunnar always makes the game fun and loose on the field and in the dugout,” summer league teammate Logan Renken of Little River said. “One of the best gap to gap hitters I have played with and he just seems to never get out. He is never tight or pressed about a situation and I think he is going to do big things at the next level.”His Swather teammates mentioned Lewis and the positivity he maintained.“He’s a great person to his teammates and he helped us out so that we would succeed and achieve new things,” Lange said. “In JV he helped a lot of us work on things to get to the varsity level also so I would describe him as a great player.”“Gunnar is and always has been a great leader. Whenever something goes wrong instead of being negative he always stays positive and encourages everyone to keep working hard,” Josh Koehn said.“Gunnar since freshman year has always been one of our main guys to lead the team,” Layne Clark said. “His passion for the game always helped fuel the energy in the dugout and on the field.”Lewis said the middle school self would be a little surprised how he’s turned out.&nbsp;“High school me grew a lot and got a lot bigger. The height and weight difference from eighth grade to my senior year is about 10 inches and around 75 pounds,” said the current 6-foot, 180-pound Lewis. “I switched from second base to shortstop my sophomore year because of how much stronger my arm got. And I finally found power in my bat in high school which I never had.”“He’s a hard working teammate who puts his body on the line for the team and is also a great friend,” summer teammate Sam Soderstrom said.“He makes all the plays you need an infielder to make and can range both ways to give you a show at third,” Renken said.His Swathers reached the state tournament twice in Lewis’ four years.“I had always dreamed of winning a state championship but unfortunately it never happened,” Lewis said. “Individually I received all league honors three times and was second team all state this last season. I am very grateful to have received these awards.”“He was a good high school player because he was a leader,” Goalden noted. “And he wanted to make him and his team better everyday.”“He could become a great and amazing player in college if he decides to do the right thing at all times,” Lange said. “He would get along with a lot of people and be an amazing player.”Lewis hopes his legacy has been established for future Swather stars to follow.“It being a young program I just want to be a good first step in things to come,” Lewis said. “A lot of middle schoolers and younger kids came to games and I hope some of those diving plays or great hits I may have had made them interested in baseball and I hope they can keep the Hesston Baseball Program respectable.”
