NEWTON, Kan. — At a work session before Tuesday night’s meeting,&nbsp;the City Commission discussed the 2025 budget and a possible reduction in the City’s tax rate.

Newton’s assessed valuation rose by 12.7% for next year, a large increase after many years of relatively stagnant growth. If the City keeps its mill levy flat next year, it will bring in an additional $1.35 million.

<a>The proposed 2025 budget includes four new positions at least partially funded by the General Fund: an engineer, an IT technician, a Street maintenance worker and Park maintenance worker.&nbsp;</a>It also includes $477,000 for an anticipated 3% increase in employee wages following a planned classification and salary study to make sure the City remains competitive in the job market. The proposed budget projects a General Fund balance of 14% for 2025; the City strives to maintain a balance of 15%.

Commissioners said they would like to see some additional budget options that would reduce the tax rate since there was such a large jump in valuations. They also requested information on how much of that jump was from new construction in the city vs. increases on existing properties.

The City Commission has prioritized community development in recent years to help grow the tax base and create growth in valuation with new construction. Commissioners said they wanted to take advantage of that growth while also giving taxpayers a break, if possible.&nbsp;They also said they wanted to keep an eye on long-term budget projections, as continued increases in valuation aren’t guaranteed, and they don't want to reduce too much now and wind up needing large tax increases in future years.

The Commission will continue its budget discussions at a work session at 5 p.m. July 9.

This Hard White Wheat Special Edition of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports is brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Hard white (HW) winter wheat varieties continue to be popular among some western Kansas farmers for their high yields, disease resistance and quality. Kansas Wheat continues to work with the grain handling industry and Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS) to revise the grain standards to facilitate the movement of hard white wheat in domestic and international markets and lessen the burden on grain handlers.&nbsp;

Hard white wheat had been growing in export demand, primarily to Nigeria out of the Texas Gulf, but the past several years of drought-stricken production shortfalls have impacted that business for Kansas farmers.

Eric Sperber from Cornerstone Ag in Colby, who has been trading hard white wheat since the late 1990s, said, “We’ve never matched up demand with supply. Either there’s more demand and not enough supply, or more supply and not enough demand.” He said, “Unless we can get Nigeria back, it’s hard to market hard white wheat.”

Although Sperber anticipates less than 10 percent of their receipts to be hard white wheat this year, down from years past, he’s pleased with the excellent quality and quantity of wheat in the area.&nbsp;

Wheat coming into his location, both hard red and hard white, have test weights of 60+ pounds per bushel, protein averaging about 12 percent, and variable yields that will likely end up above average overall. Most farmers in his draw area of Rawlins, Thomas, Sheridan and Logan counties have been “pleasantly surprised” by this year’s wheat harvest.

Hard white wheat makes up 16.3 percent of planted acres in west central and southwest Kansas. Joe is the top seeded hard white wheat variety, making up 8.4 percent of planted acres in southwest Kansas and 7.9 percent in west central Kansas. Overall, hard white wheat was seeded on 4.3 percent of Kansas’ 7.7 million acres, accounting for&nbsp;331,100&nbsp;acres seeded to hard white wheat in the fall of 2023. KS Big Bow, being the most recent HW release and projecting to be a Joe replacement with higher yield potential, better disease package and milling and baking quality.

Overall, the quality of this year’s hard white wheat crop is excellent, in line with the quality of this year’s hard red winter wheat crop.

The Millershaskis from Lakin in Kearny County are growing both Joe and KS Big Bow, hard white wheats from the Kansas Wheat Alliance, this year.

Gary Millershaski reports that their “test weights have been unbelievable, 60 to 65 pounds per bushel.” They have very good sized berries and clean samples.

They have not tested for protein because the elevators in the area do not pay for protein.

In February, the crop looked fantastic. Kyler Millershaski said he was excited to topdress because it was looking so good.

They got a really good stand on all their acres last fall, and even had snow cover over the winter.&nbsp;

But, then the spigot turned off and they received no more moisture until late May.

“I had higher hopes,” Kyler said. "It’s disappointing.”

Even with the lack of moisture in the spring, their farm will average approximately 28 bushels per acre, down from an average in the mid-40s.

They received a major hailstorm, which resulted in one field being a total loss and a few others with yields of only 10 to 20 bushels per acre.

They haven’t had any issues with wheat streak mosaic virus, even though some of their neighbors have it.

“Joe has been such a good staple for this area,” Gary said, referencing its wheat streak resistance.

Like Millershaskis’ operation, the Suppes’ in Lane County see farming as a family affair.

Ron, his son Shane, nephew Jace, and a skilled group of hired hands started cutting their hard white winter wheat crop on June 18. With dry weather, they expect to finish in the next seven days. They were using stripper headers, which maximize the use of straw left behind for moisture conservation and weed management.

This year they planted Joe and KS Big Bow and have been pleasantly surprised by their resilience to the spotty weather they have had. They gave some credit to timely rains during the grain filling period.&nbsp;

The family was happy to report an average of 50 bushels per acre and proteins at 12.5 percent. Their wheat crop this year faced some pressure from wheat streak mosaic virus which put a damper on yields, but was not a huge factor due to the advancements made by wheat research.

“It's the genetics shining through,” said Jace as he reflected on this season’s challenges.

Stewart Whitham, who farms near Leoti, in Wichita County said there was a tremendous amount of variability potential in this crop, just a few weeks before getting started cutting.&nbsp;

Over the course of the weeks leading up to harvest, grain filling weather was ideal, which allowed for his crop to be “better than expected.”

Whitham’s crop of KS Big Bow had average test weights of 62.7 pounds per bushel, with protein averaging 13.2 percent.&nbsp;

Hard White Wheat Special Edition Harvest Report 2024

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson is moving forward with addressing the safety concerns surrounding the Atrium Hotel and Conference Center, located at 1400 N Lorraine Street. On July 2, 2024, the City Council will meet to schedule a public hearing for August 20, 2024, to discuss the potential condemnation and demolition of the property.

The City has determined that this structure is a substandard building and constitutes an unsafe and dangerous building.

The City conducted an inspection of the Atrium Hotel and identified several critical safety issues:

• Extensive vandalism resulting in the removal of most copper wiring and rendering electrical services inoperable

• Fire suppression system broken for over three years

• Non-functional heating and air conditioning units due to stripped copper tubing and wiring

• Presence of black mold, posing significant health risks

Over the past few years, the City has undertaken temporary measures, including painting over graffiti, boarding up doors and windows, and mowing the grass. However, there are 16 unpaid invoices for these abatement activities.

According to the city’s code on unsafe and dangerous buildings, the City Council must set a time and place for a public hearing to discuss the issue. At the July 2 meeting, the Council will be asked to schedule a public hearing for August 20, 2024, at 9:00 AM. At the hearing, property owners, agents, or interested parties can present evidence, and the Building Official will provide detailed findings.

This hearing is an essential step in addressing the blight and safety hazards posed by the Atrium Hotel.

City Manager Enrico Villegas emphasized the importance of addressing the Atrium Hotel's issues promptly: "The safety and well-being of our community is our top priority.

The current state of the Atrium Hotel poses significant risks, and it is essential that we take immediate action to protect our residents."

City to set hearing on Atrium Hotel property

MCPHERSON, Kan. — Kansas U.S. Senator Jerry Moran announced on Thursday in McPherson that he has secured $2.1 million in new, congressionally directed funding for McPherson College. The federal funds will support the college’s initiative to create an educational center in Kansas for Rural &amp; Community Health Science.

"On that top list of four or five focuses of goals, is to make sure that our health care delivery system remains solid and intact in places across Kansas," Moran said. "At the current time, that is a huge and significant challenge. I used to be able to say, especially for our smallest communities, and our smallest hospitals. It's expanded beyond that, in which communities your size and larger struggle in regard to being able to provide health care to their community."

The college has made progress toward this goal by introducing a new health science program where students focus on clinical, administrative, behavioral, or community health academic emphasis. In 2019, it partnered with the McPherson Center for Health to provide experiential learning opportunities for students. This is the first time in McPherson College’s 137-year history it has secured federal funds through congressionally directed spending.

"Many rural Kansans, they've got to drive a long way to get medical care," Schneider said. "Some of them aren't able to make that drive. In turn, their health might be neglected. This grant is the start of taking better care of our Kansans in those smaller communities. It places McPherson College at the forefront of this effort. This could not have happened without the Senator. As we think about this, we're excited that we see their same passion for making sure every Kansan has access to healthcare. This specific funding will help us to grow and enhance our partnerships within the state of Kansas."

The funding will allow McPherson College to modernize key parts of the Melhorn Science Hall, including significant laboratory and technology enhancements to support anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, public health, and behavioral health studies. A portion of the funding will be used for professional development to help meet new and ongoing rural healthcare needs and expand statewide health outreach programming.

Moran gets $2.1 million for McPherson College

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — At a news conference Thursday morning at the Reno County Courthouse, Kansas U.S. Senator Jerry Moran announced $408,000 of funding for the Reno County Sheriff's Department.&nbsp; The money will allow the department to purchase modernized radio systems and a body scanner.

"The Reno County Sheriff's Office modernization project consists of two parts," said Reno County Sheriff Darrian Campbell. "The first part's a radio upgrade for a fleet of vehicles and other mobile commands. The upgrade's a necessary federal mandate requiring all law enforcement agencies and dispatch centers to have all channels that are requested criminal justice information. To be broadcast over radio frequency, you must have AES encryption. There are specific radios which can hold different encryptions. Our current radios do not."

The other part will help keep everyone safe in the Reno County Jail.

"The second part of this modernization project allows the Reno County Sheriff's Office to purchase a body scanner," Campbell said. "Let me provide a little bit of background on this. During a prior incident, an arrestee was brought into the Reno County Correctional Facility. The following morning, the inmate was found unresponsive in his cell. Video from the cell revealed narcotics were pulled from the waistband and ingested. Several months later, deputies conducted a facility search of each housing unit. This took two days to conduct. Methamphetamine was discovered in one of the housing units. A strip search is done prior to being housed in the general population. However, in order to mitigate human error, we requested the purchase of a Smiths Detection B-scan Full Body, High Resolution, X-ray machine. This is a corrections-grade body scanner."

Moran said the ability to fund this through Congressionally Directed Spending was created as he and the top Democrat on the committee that oversees the Department of Justice were looking for ways to combat the defund the police movement.&nbsp;

"We decided we were going to try to find ways to further support law enforcement, not reduce its funding," Moran said. "To try to make law enforcement officials, allow them to have the necessary assets to protect themselves or to serve their community for the safety and security of the people they serve."

Moran has stops all across Kansas this week, as the Senate is not in session.

Moran announces money for Reno County Sheriff's Department

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Monarchs owner and general manager Marc Blackim announced Thursday morning that the Monarchs' game scheduled for Friday in Wichita has been moved to Hutchinson.

The Monarchs and the Dirtbags will now play at Hobart-Detter Field at 7 p.m.

Due to the change in the schedule, there will not be a livestream available on Hutch Post.

RENO AND RICE COUNTY —Resurfacing will start soon on three sections of Old K-14 in Reno and Rice counties.

The Kansas Department of Transportation project involves a mill and overlay in Reno County from the south city limits of Nickerson to the south tie-in at Dean Road. This portion of the project has been delayed.

That Reno County work is expected to begin around July 8 and be completed around July 12.

During all three phases of the work, traffic will be controlled by a pilot car and flaggers, so motorists should be prepared to stop and expect delays of up to 15 minutes.

After the initial Reno County portion is completed, the mill and overlay work will shift to the portion in Rice and Reno counties from the south city limits of Sterling to Sego Road.

That work is expected to begin around July 15 and be completed around July 19.

After the second section is completed, the third phase – through Nickerson – is expected to begin around July 22, ending around July 26.

The first map below shows the work locations through Nickerson and from the south city limits of Nickerson to the south tie-in at Dean Road. The second map shows the work location from the south city limits of Sterling to Sego Road.&nbsp;

Old K-14 resurfacing is set in Reno, Rice counties

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 600 block of North Main on the east side.

The red-brick building at 606 N. Main was built about 1920 and its first tenant was Roy Grice Confections.

By 1934, it had become the Rendezvous Restaurant, owned by John Davis.

In 1936, it changed course and became a night club. On Dec. 21, 1935, Vern Waggoner opened "The Chateau." The first photo shows the opening day announcement in the Hutch News.

In 1959, Walter McMillan purchased the building and it became the Chateau Tavern until he sold it to Harold Nevius in 1960. The second photo shows The Chateau during the 1961 Centennial Parade.

The establishment was visited many times by the Hutch Police. Harold finally had enough, so he sold the enterprise to Thomas Vincent and built the Fireside Club just outside the city limits in 1964.

In 1967, it became the Kimbell Insurance Agency.

In 1979, Don Paige started his dance studio upstairs at 606 ½ N. Main, which lasted for 36 years.

Deshazer Insurance Agency was there in 1983. Advertising Specialties was there in 1991. The fourth photo shows the building at 606 N. Main today with Kansas Secured Title doing business there. The building is owned by the Masonic Lodge of Hutchinson, Inc.

📷 Throwback Thursday: 606 N. Main - Vol. 76

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In a letter sent to local companies obtained by Hutch Post, the Hutchinson Clinic has announced it will not be doing business with Blue Cross Blue Shield in-network next year. This decision, if it stands, will effect a little over 26,000 Hutch Clinic patients.

"The Hutchinson Clinic, PA has cancelled its contract with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS) and Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) Affiliates effective January 1, 2025," the letter says. "The Hutchinson Clinic, PA plans to remain in-network with all other current national and regional health insurance plans for the 2025 year."

BCBS is still in network for the remainder of 2024.

"What the clinic requested from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas was a percent increase year over year for the next three years to account for inflationary costs related to pharmaceuticals, supplies, and labor," said Hutchinson Clinic CEO Kolbe Sheridan. "Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas has shared with us that they have one fee schedule for the entire state of Kansas and that they were unwilling to negotiate that fee schedule."

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas said in a statement provided to Hutch Post Wednesday that the reimbursement rate isn't even out yet. The statement is below, in italics.

We are disappointed that the Hutchinson Clinic sent BCBSKS a termination notice effective December 31, 2024 prior to the release of 2025 reimbursement rates. &nbsp;We hope they reconsider once the 2025 reimbursement rates are released. Our goal is to compensate providers fairly while being good stewards of our members' health care dollars.

We deliver statewide reimbursement rates to providers in July. Providers then have until September 3 to choose whether they want to remain in our network. This is the standard, annual contract procedure.

The Clinic is asking businesses to let BCBS know of their desire to have a deal struck.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to a Wednesday social media post from the City of Hutchinson, tree limb and brush drop sites will be closing permanently effective Friday, June 28th at 5 p.m. Residents are encouraged to utilize the Reno County Landfill for limb and brush disposal from this date onward.

Limb sites wrapping up Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel told Hutch Post that they are still searching for a tenant and pitching the idea of the industrial park south of South Hutchinson, even as the infrastructure is not ready to be built out yet.

"I think at this point, it would not be responsible to just start digging the line to that site," Teufel said. "Going under the river is incredibly expensive. And you want to make sure you're building the line, the water line in particular, to the size that your tenant is going to need, and so rather than getting the cart before the horse or putting water lines in the ground and then finding out that we didn't right size them, we will just wait, but have all of those studies done and the alignment study done so that we know exactly when a company is ready to go and how much volume of water they need, that there's a plan in place to deliver that."

Teufel met with engineers recently on the project.

"We're going to re-engage with the steering committee that included folks from both the city of Hutchinson and South Hutch, as well as Reno County, probably in late July or August to just give everyone a recap of where we are at currently with the master plan process and what are some dangling next steps," Teufel said. "There were a couple of things that just need cleaned up on the legal description on the annexation. It was annexed in December. So that was a big step because anybody that's gonna locate there is going to want to have assurance of where their utilities are going to come from. That was big. It is zoned for industry, but there are some things that still need to be studied about what also are the right improvements we need to make to the roadways. That too kind of is dependent on who will go in the site."

There's also some outside work being done outside of any of the government or the Chamber's control.&nbsp;

"I would say the one thing that's holding us back a little bit is Evergy is embarking on some studies right now around how much power they can deliver to projects across the state," Teufel said. "Until they figure out some of their own capacity constraints, they have been a great partner when we have pitched the site on projects, but there's also some work to be done just to make sure that we can give any end user the assurance that they can get the water and the power they need."

The bottom line is that it will likely be some months before we have real movement on the industrial park, unless the perfect project comes along.

Work behind the scenes continues on industrial park

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — U.S. Term Limits (USTL), the leader in the national, non-partisan movement to limit terms for elected officials, is gathering support from state lawmakers across the nation. Its mission is to get 34 states to apply for an amendment proposal convention specific to term limits on Congress. Kansas state house Rep. Jason Probst (District 102), has committed support for term limits on Congress by signing the term limits convention pledge.

USTL President, Philip Blumel, commented on Probst's pledge saying, “Jason's strong support of term limits shows that there are individuals who are willing to listen to the majority of voters who want term limits. America needs a Congress that will be served by citizen legislators, not career politicians.”

The U.S. Term Limits pledge is provided to candidates and members of state legislatures. It reads, “I pledge that, as a member of the state legislature, I will cosponsor, vote for, and defend the resolution applying for an Article V convention for the sole purpose of enacting term limits on Congress.”

In the 1995 case, Thornton v. U.S. Term Limits, the Supreme Court of the United States opined that only a Constitutional Amendment could limit the terms of U.S. Senators and House Representatives. According to Nick Tomboulides, Executive Director of USTL, the best chance of imposing term limits on Congress is through an Article V Proposal Convention of state legislatures.

“The Constitution allows for amendments to be proposed by either 2/3 of Congress or 2/3 of the states.&nbsp;While we’d like for Congress to take the high road and propose term limits on itself, our goal is to trigger the latter, a national convention specifically for a term limits amendment,” claims Tomboulides. “That is why it is important to get buy-in from state legislators,” he added. Once proposed, the amendment must be ratified by 38 states.

Tomboulides noted, “More than 87% of Americans have rejected the career politician model and want to replace it with citizen leadership. The way to achieve that goal is through a congressional term limits amendment. Jason knows this and is willing to work to make sure we reach our goal.”

Probst signs term limits convention pledge

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A case that is still pending before the U.S. Supreme Court is of particular interest to those who want to see the adminisrative state limited, and make sure that Congress needs to act for a law to change.

"There's actually two cases that are kind of joined together," said Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach. "One is called Loper Bright and the other one is called Relentless. Those are the names of plaintiffs or parties in the case. It would roll back the so-called Chevron Doctrine. It's called Chevron because of another case decades ago. The Chevron Doctrine said that an agency is given special deference in the courts when someone challenges the way an agency is interpreting its own authority under the law."

The conventional wisdom believes that with the court's current makeup, it will likely roll back at least some of Chevron's protections, though the specifics won't be known until a decision happens.

"That has been part of the problem for several decades, but especially problematic because the Biden administration has abused it and pushed its authority beyond the clear wording of the statutes," Kobach said. "There are two cases that clearly challenge it. Many justices have over the past few decades expressed concern with that doctrine, and I'm optimistic that this week we will find that the Chevron Doctrine is no longer."

Traditionally, the Supreme Court hands down all of its decisions by the end of June.

Kobach awaiting SCOTUS hand down of important decision

The lives of one Kansas farm family were forever changed after a large and violent long-track tornado tore across north central Kansas on May 25, 2015. Ranking as one of the most violent tornadoes of the season with an EF4 rating and estimated winds of 180 miles per hour, the funnel was on the ground for more than a staggering 90 minutes, bending railroad tracks and snapping trees three or four feet wide in half.&nbsp;

The worst damage was to a single farmstead one mile southwest of Chapman, where the home and all the outbuildings were completely blown away as the operation’s matriarch hid in the basement underneath pillows. But what could be only a story of devastation is also one of hope, community and resilience for Ken and Deb Wood, who shared their story with Aaron Harries, Kansas Wheat vice president of research and operations and host of the Wheat’s on Your Mind podcast.

Today, Ken is a retired wheat farmer, who has served on the boards of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers and the National Association of Wheat Growers. He still serves as a board member for the National Wheat Foundation. Deb works as a family resource management agent for K-State Research and Extension in Salina.

The day the tornado struck wasn’t expected to be a very severe weather day. Ken was away in Hays for KAWG meetings and Deb went to and came home from work like normal. Their farmstead was picturesque, located in a river bottom with a traditional farmhouse, nine outbuildings and all the machinery you would expect on a working farm – minus the combines that were stored at a different location. Ken had all his corn and about half of his soybeans planted and he recalled he was three weeks to a month out from wheat harvest.

Deb came home like any other day, got a bite to eat and had the news on. There was a storm building east of Bennington, but it was Kansas and May, so thunderstorms and tornadoes are just part of the normal weather broadcast.

“There’s tornadoes around Kansas all the time, so I didn’t think too awful much of it until things started getting closer,” Deb said. “Looking back, if I knew then what I know now, I would have put as much stuff into my vehicle as I possibly could have and gotten the heck out of Dodge.”

Ken stayed in Hays for supper. He got an alert on his phone that there was some severe weather developing, but he just watched as it developed like a normal storm. He got on the road and headed for home, but the longer he drove, the more he realized the storm was developing into something dangerous.

In Kansas, tornadoes typically move from the southwest to the northeast or due north. This night’s tornado moved west to east, took a right turn, went south across I-70 and hit the Wood’s farmstead out of the northwest as a monster.

“When you live in Kansas, you spend a lot of time in the basement when there’s a warning,” Deb said. “Most of the time, I go downstairs and I just kind of sit there, listen to the radio and wait for it to be over with. I had done that and then I had gone back up as I was getting texts from people. And that’s when I started worrying.”

Deb quickly gathered what she could – some medicine, work clothes and, importantly, Ken’s work boots. Then she ducked under a desk in the basement, taking pillows off the bed in the room and stuffing them around her. Still, it didn’t occur to her that the storm would take everything else.

Then the storm hit. The glass broke. The subfloor was totally blown away. And the entire house was gone.

“There was nothing left at the farm and I mean nothing left,” Deb said. “There was just nothing. It just chewed everything up into little pieces.”

The glass all broke, it ripped off the subfloor totally.&nbsp;The house’s center beam broke into two and a wall landed on Deb. Then it started raining and then it started hailing. Still, Deb kept her cool.

“I called Ken to let him know we’d taken a direct hit, but I was fine, but I couldn’t get out,” Deb remembered.

A local fireman who had lost part of his own farming operation in a 2008 tornado that hit nearby Chapman was first on the scene. Deb could hear him calling for her, so she started hitting on top of the wall. He removed what he could but had to wait for help to get her out entirely.

Ken got the call when he was in nearby Abilene. He raced down the road but was stopped on his normal route on Old 40 Highway because there were poles across the road. When a deputy came flying around the corner and heading north towards I-70, Ken got behind him and followed him all the way – not stopping at a single stop sign, only slowing when they hit a heavy hailstorm.

By the time Ken got home, it was still light enough to see the damage. Deb had very deep bruises on her back, but no broken bones. Although they had no house, no clothes, no food, the community immediately rallied together. Ken and Deb stayed that night at Ken’s brother’s house, but neither slept a wink.

The next morning brought help that did not stop – from family, friends, neighbors, the community, former co-workers, the KARL program, the wheat family. Anyone and everyone who could offer help did. Two former teachers of Ken offered to rent them a two-story farmhouse west of Junction City that was fully furnished. The couple moved in with half a trash bag full of clothes and a pan of lasagna from a neighbor and lived there for 10 months. Although, the fridge was already so full of offerings that the lasagna barely fit.

In addition to the farmhouse and yard, the couple lost irrigation pivots, bins, other buildings and a couple of pieces of equipment.&nbsp;But one of the hardest chores was cleaning up all the acres where debris was scattered like crumbs.

“It literally just chewed stuff up and so there was a lot of stuff that was spread out over the fields,” Ken said. “Little pieces. You’d find a handle off a truck, and there was a lot of things that you couldn’t tell what they were.”

In addition to picking up individual pieces of debris, Ken and his helpers burned wheat stubble and then had to mine the debris hidden under the stubble. It couldn’t be done all at once, so it was done one smoky, dusty terrace at a time.

Within just a few weeks, it was time for wheat harvest. Luckily, Ken was no stranger to borrowing trucks or tractors from his brother or neighbors. And wheat harvest felt like a return to something normal.

“That was the first thing that felt like I was doing something that’s not picking stuff up and not tornado-related,” Ken said. “Although harvest was a real trip, cutting around stuff out in the wheat fields, that was what got me back into the right frame of mind to at least start a plan.”

The couple navigated insurance and deciding where and how to rebuild their farmstead. The home builders broke ground at the end of September and they moved into their brand-new home the first weekend of the next April.

Their story does not end there. When health issues popped up, Ken made the difficult decision to retire. One of the neighbors who stepped up after the tornado and brought out a loader to help out had a son coming home and wanted to expand his operation. So Ken and Deb made the calls – first to their landlords and then to others – it was time to turn over the operation to a new generation.

“One weekend, that’s about all I did was call people and let them know,” Ken said. “As it turned out, I’ve been way healthier than I was expecting to be from this whole deal, so I could have kept going. But once you make the decision, I’ve been at peace with it pretty much.”

While COVID-19 disrupted retirement travel plans, the Woods have found themselves as busy as ever. Deb now helps share her story about taking an inventory of both everything in the machine shed and in the house, but also putting together a grab-and-go box with all the policy and phone numbers needed if the worst happens. And Ken found he missed serving on wheat industry boards, so he quickly applied when a spot opened up for the board for the National Wheat Foundation.

“Now I’m probably busier than I want to be, but it’s self-inflicted,” Ken said. “So I’m good with that.”

Through it all – farming, tornadoes, rebuilding a home, retiring – Ken and Deb know one truth above all else – it’s the people around you that matter most.

“I feel like we’ve come out on the other side stronger and more resilient,” Deb said. “All of the people that helped us get through the recovery; we couldn’t have done it without them. Building those relationships and keeping in touch with people and having that community – it really helps you get through things like this.”

Ken was away in Hays for KAWG meetings and Deb went to and came home from work like normal. Their farmstead was picturesque, located in a river bottom with a traditional farmhouse, nine outbuildings and all the machinery you would expect on a working farm – minus the combines that were stored at a different location. Ken had all his corn and about half of his soybeans planted and he recalled he was three weeks to a month out from wheat harvest.Deb came home like any other day, got a bite to eat and had the news on. There was a storm building east of Bennington, but it was Kansas and May, so thunderstorms and tornadoes are just part of the normal weather broadcast.“There’s tornadoes around Kansas all the time, so I didn’t think too awful much of it until things started getting closer,” Deb said. “Looking back, if I knew then what I know now, I would have put as much stuff into my vehicle as I possibly could have and gotten the heck out of Dodge.”Ken stayed in Hays for supper. He got an alert on his phone that there was some severe weather developing, but he just watched as it developed like a normal storm. He got on the road and headed for home, but the longer he drove, the more he realized the storm was developing into something dangerous.In Kansas, tornadoes typically move from the southwest to the northeast or due north. This night’s tornado moved west to east, took a right turn, went south across I-70 and hit the Wood’s farmstead out of the northwest as a monster.“When you live in Kansas, you spend a lot of time in the basement when there’s a warning,” Deb said. “Most of the time, I go downstairs and I just kind of sit there, listen to the radio and wait for it to be over with. I had done that and then I had gone back up as I was getting texts from people. And that’s when I started worrying.”Deb quickly gathered what she could – some medicine, work clothes and, importantly, Ken’s work boots. Then she ducked under a desk in the basement, taking pillows off the bed in the room and stuffing them around her. Still, it didn’t occur to her that the storm would take everything else.Then the storm hit. The glass broke. The subfloor was totally blown away. And the entire house was gone.“There was nothing left at the farm and I mean nothing left,” Deb said. “There was just nothing. It just chewed everything up into little pieces.”The glass all broke, it ripped off the subfloor totally.&nbsp;The house’s center beam broke into two and a wall landed on Deb. Then it started raining and then it started hailing. Still, Deb kept her cool.“I called Ken to let him know we’d taken a direct hit, but I was fine, but I couldn’t get out,” Deb remembered.A local fireman who had lost part of his own farming operation in a 2008 tornado that hit nearby Chapman was first on the scene. Deb could hear him calling for her, so she started hitting on top of the wall. He removed what he could but had to wait for help to get her out entirely.Ken got the call when he was in nearby Abilene. He raced down the road but was stopped on his normal route on Old 40 Highway because there were poles across the road. When a deputy came flying around the corner and heading north towards I-70, Ken got behind him and followed him all the way – not stopping at a single stop sign, only slowing when they hit a heavy hailstorm.By the time Ken got home, it was still light enough to see the damage. Deb had very deep bruises on her back, but no broken bones. Although they had no house, no clothes, no food, the community immediately rallied together. Ken and Deb stayed that night at Ken’s brother’s house, but neither slept a wink.The next morning brought help that did not stop – from family, friends, neighbors, the community, former co-workers, the KARL program, the wheat family. Anyone and everyone who could offer help did. Two former teachers of Ken offered to rent them a two-story farmhouse west of Junction City that was fully furnished. The couple moved in with half a trash bag full of clothes and a pan of lasagna from a neighbor and lived there for 10 months. Although, the fridge was already so full of offerings that the lasagna barely fit.In addition to the farmhouse and yard, the couple lost irrigation pivots, bins, other buildings and a couple of pieces of equipment.&nbsp;But one of the hardest chores was cleaning up all the acres where debris was scattered like crumbs.“It literally just chewed stuff up and so there was a lot of stuff that was spread out over the fields,” Ken said. “Little pieces. You’d find a handle off a truck, and there was a lot of things that you couldn’t tell what they were.”In addition to picking up individual pieces of debris, Ken and his helpers burned wheat stubble and then had to mine the debris hidden under the stubble. It couldn’t be done all at once, so it was done one smoky, dusty terrace at a time.Within just a few weeks, it was time for wheat harvest. Luckily, Ken was no stranger to borrowing trucks or tractors from his brother or neighbors. And wheat harvest felt like a return to something normal.“That was the first thing that felt like I was doing something that’s not picking stuff up and not tornado-related,” Ken said. “Although harvest was a real trip, cutting around stuff out in the wheat fields, that was what got me back into the right frame of mind to at least start a plan.”The couple navigated insurance and deciding where and how to rebuild their farmstead. The home builders broke ground at the end of September and they moved into their brand-new home the first weekend of the next April.Their story does not end there. When health issues popped up, Ken made the difficult decision to retire. One of the neighbors who stepped up after the tornado and brought out a loader to help out had a son coming home and wanted to expand his operation. So Ken and Deb made the calls – first to their landlords and then to others – it was time to turn over the operation to a new generation.“One weekend, that’s about all I did was call people and let them know,” Ken said. “As it turned out, I’ve been way healthier than I was expecting to be from this whole deal, so I could have kept going. But once you make the decision, I’ve been at peace with it pretty much.”While COVID-19 disrupted retirement travel plans, the Woods have found themselves as busy as ever. Deb now helps share her story about taking an inventory of both everything in the machine shed and in the house, but also putting together a grab-and-go box with all the policy and phone numbers needed if the worst happens. And Ken found he missed serving on wheat industry boards, so he quickly applied when a spot opened up for the board for the National Wheat Foundation.“Now I’m probably busier than I want to be, but it’s self-inflicted,” Ken said. “So I’m good with that.”Through it all – farming, tornadoes, rebuilding a home, retiring – Ken and Deb know one truth above all else – it’s the people around you that matter most.“I feel like we’ve come out on the other side stronger and more resilient,” Deb said. “All of the people that helped us get through the recovery; we couldn’t have done it without them.
