Robert ‘Bob’ Wesley McCullough, 83, passed away May 15, 2023, at his home.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was born November 15, 1939, in Burlington, KS, to John Dee McCullough and Lena J. (Woods) McCullough.

Bob received an Associates Degree from Hutchinson Community College and served in the United States Army.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was employed as the maintenance supervisor and an instructor in the carpentry shop at Hutchinson Correctional Facility, retiring with many years of service.&nbsp;&nbsp;After retirement, Bob managed the Farmers’ Market for more than 15 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, KS.

Bob enjoyed woodworking and could make anything from furniture to jewelry boxes.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was also into the building and the construction of homes.

On February 14, 1960, Bob married Winifred Jane Bradshaw, in Ottawa, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp;They shared over 63 years of marriage.

He is survived by:&nbsp;&nbsp;his wife, Winifred ‘Winnie’ McCullough of Hutchinson, KS; and son, Bryan (fiancée Kristina Patterson) McCullough of Hutchinson, KS.

Bob was preceded in death by:&nbsp;&nbsp;his parents; brother, Clyde ‘Mac’ McCullough; and sister, Darlene Hadden.

Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Friday, May 19, 2023, at Elliott Mortuary, with Pastor Lisa Dale officiating.&nbsp;&nbsp;Burial will be at a later date in the Bailey Cemetery, Burlington, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp;Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, 2023, and Thursday, May 18, 2023, at Elliott Mortuary.&nbsp;&nbsp;Cremation has taken place.&nbsp;&nbsp;The memorial service can be viewed online beginning at 12:45 p.m. on the day of the service, by going to Bob’s obituary on the Elliott Mortuary website and clicking on the link located at the end of the online obituary.

Sue E. Gore, 74, a retired cook and formerly of Hutchinson, died April 30, 2023, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was born August 9, 1948, in Hutchinson, the daughter of William R. and Lola Fern (Uncapher) Demoret.&nbsp;

Sue was a graduate of Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College.&nbsp;&nbsp;She married Jimmie Gore on July 24, 1988, in Hutchinson.&nbsp;&nbsp;He died August 20, 2016.

Sue is survived by: three stepchildren; her brother, Bob Demoret of Hutchinson; and several nieces, nephews, and other extended family.

She was preceded in death by: her husband; a son, Kenneth Lee Bankey, Jr.; her parents; three brothers; and one sister.

The family will celebrate Sue’s life from 10:00 a.m. until noon Saturday, May 20, 2023, at Gazebo #5, located in Carey Park near the Salt City Splash Aquatic Center, Hutchinson.&nbsp;&nbsp;Please come casual and bring a covered dish for lunch.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College has scheduled two FAST Track (Future Apprenticeship Success Training) programs this summer geared towards high school students and young adults ages 16 and up.

FAST Track programs will be offered in Construction and Manufacturing and will run from June 5 – 23 from 8 am – 5 pm each weekday. Activities will include both classroom work and industry tours, lunch is included, and participants will have the opportunity to earn college credit.

These programs will be available at no cost to the participant who will also be eligible to receive a stipend equivalent to $10/hour.

NEWTON – After two straight national tournaments of leading wire-to-wire, the No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team faces a deficit after Round 1 of the 2023 NJCAA Division I Championships on Tuesday at Sand Creek Station.

The No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons are 11 strokes off the pace of Indian Hills after 18 holes. The Blue Dragons shot a 1-over-par 289 on Tuesday.

Round 2 of the 72-hole championship is Wednesday at Sand Creek Station. First tee times are set for 7:30 a.m. The Blue Dragons, who are again paired with New Mexico Junior College and Midland College, tee off from 1:20 to 2 p.m.

The Blue Dragons had a strong start, playing the first five holes in 3-under par. Hutchinson then struggled from holes 6 through 14 with 14 bogeys and only four birdies as the Blue Dragons fell nine spots in the team standings to a tie for 12th.

Hutchinson built some momentum for Wednesday and climbed back into the Top 10 with a good finish that included two birdies each from&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/lindstrom_alex_7wqw">Alex Lindstrom</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/saffell_blake_2ov2">Blake Saffell</a>&nbsp;and a&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/galvin_louis_mscz">Louis Galvin</a>&nbsp;birdie. The Dragons played the final four holes in 3-under par to close at 289.

Indian Hills leads the team standings after 18 holes at 10-under 278. Eastern Florida State is second at 281. Western Texas is at 282 and McLennan is fourth at 283.

This is the first time since 2019 that the Blue Dragons have not led the national tournament after a round. After no tournament in 2020 because of the pandemic, the Blue Dragons led the 2021 and 2022 championships after the opening round and never relinquished the lead.

Lindstrom, who on Monday night was named the Phil Mickelson NJCAA Freshman of the Year, led the Blue Dragons with a 3-under-par round of 69. Lindstrom had four birdies and just one bogey in his opening round. Lindstrom closed strong with birdies on Nos. 16 and 28.

Lindstrom is the only Blue Dragon currently in the Top 10, tied for seventh at 3-under par. Lindstrom was one of 32 golfers to shoot under par on Tuesday.

Galvin and fellow freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/anderson_marco_z2pq">Marco Anderson</a>&nbsp;both carded 1-over 73s on Tuesday, which is tied for 46th.

Galvin was 1-under through nine holes, but had three bogeys over the next six holes before a birdie on No. 16 and pars on the final two holes.

Anderson was 2-under through five holes, but had four birdies and five bogeys to finish at 1-over par after the first round.

Saffell was 4-over par through 13 holes, but put together a strong final five holes with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 15 and 16 and a near miss of a birdie on No. 18 to finish at 2-over 74. Saffell is tied for 61st after the opening round.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/clemons_dominic_18vf">Dominic Clemons</a>&nbsp;finished Day 1 with a 4-over 76. Clemons is tied for 85th after 18 holes.

Wallace State's Keith Hunter is the individual leader with a 5-under 67. Six golfers are one stroke off the lead after 68s on Tuesday.

⛳  Blue Dragons 8th after day 1 at NJCAA Championships

NEWTON – The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team earned several honors on Monday night at the NJCAA Division I National Golf Banquet.

Veteran head coach Chris Young and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/lindstrom_alex_7wqw">Alex Lindstrom</a>&nbsp;highlighted the night of honors for the Blue Dragons.

Young was inducted into the NJCAA Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Lindstrom was named the Phil Mickelson NJCAA National Freshman of the Year.

The two-time defending national champion Blue Dragons start their run at a third national title early Tuesday morning at Sand Creek Station in Newton.

Through his first 23 seasons with the Blue Dragons, Young's accomplishments include: + 22 consecutive NJCAA Tournament appearances; + 11 Jayhawk Conference team championships (2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023); + 9 Region VI team championships (2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2016, 2019, 2021, 2022); + 3 District III team championship (2007, 2009, 2021); + 2 NJCAA National Championships; + 1 NJCAA Individual National Champion; + 2 NJCAA Individual National Runners-Up; + 1 Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year winner; + 3 Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year finalist; + 3 Phil Mickelson National Outstanding Freshman Award winners; + 4 Phil Mickelson National Freshman of the Year finalists; + 15 NJCAA All-Americans; + 16 PING/NJCAA All-Americans; + 10 Jayhawk Conference individual league champions; + 8 Region VI individual champions; + 4 District III individual champion; + 10 NJCAA Tournament Top 10 national placings.

Young was introduced by former Dodge City head coach Casey Malek on Monday evening. The Blue Dragon head coach was also named the Central District Coach of the Year.

Lindstrom, a native of Halmstad, Sweden, is the third Blue Dragon to win Mickelson Freshman of the Year award. Lindstrom joins Charlie Crocket (2019) and Ben Partridge (2021) as Blue Dragon players to earn the Mickelson Award.

Lindstrom recorded Top-11 finishes in all seven spring tournaments, collecting individual wins at KJCCC No. 2 and the KJCCC Championship to become the fourth-straight Blue Dragon to win the Jayhawk Conference Individual Champion award.

Joining Lindstrom on the Golf Coaches' Association of America NJCAA 2023 all-Freshman team are Gaspar Glaudas of Indian Hills, Travis Robbie of New Mexico JC, Adam Vermut of Eastern Florida State, and Thomas Vestergaard of Midland.

Lindstrom and sophomores&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/clemons_dominic_18vf">Dominic Clemons</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/saffell_blake_2ov2">Blake Saffell</a>&nbsp;were all named to the 2023 all-Central District team.

Clemons and Lindstrom were named GCAA PING All-Americans as first-team selections. Saffell was an honorable mention PING All-Americans.

Since 2019, the Blue Dragons have had 11 PING All-Americans.

The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team begins its quest for a third-straight national championship on Tuesday when the Blue Dragons open play at the 2023 NJCAA Division I Championships at Sand Creek Station in Newton.

The Blue Dragons open the 72-hole national tournament with tee times on Tuesday from 7:50 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Round 2 tee times on Wednesday are from 1:20 to 2 p.m. the No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons will be paired with No. 2 New Mexico Junior College and No. 3 Midland College in the first two rounds.

Hutchinson bids to accomplish something that hasn't been done in Blue Dragon men's golf since 2001 … that accomplishment is to win three-straight team championships. The last team to win three in a row was Central Alabama from 1999 to 2001.

The Blue Dragons started the current championship streak in 2021 at The Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas. The Dragons saw a sizable lead entering the final round dwindle to two strokes over Odessa, but went on to win the team title at 16-under par 1,136. Ben Partridge, Harry Crockett and Cameron Rios-Ceballos earned All-America honors and Partridge defeated Crockett in a four-hole playoff to earn the program's first individual national championships.

Last year at the Odessa Country Club, the Blue Dragons won a second-straight national championship with the widest margin of victory since 2000 with a 20-stroke victory over Odessa. The Dragons posted a 72-hole record of 22-under par 1,130.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/clemons_dominic_18vf">Dominic Clemons</a>&nbsp;lost a two-hole playoff for the individual national championship. Clemons, Partridge,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/saffell_blake_2ov2">Blake Saffell</a>&nbsp;and Crockett all earned NJCAA All-Americans.

Clemons and Saffell return from that championship team.

The 2023 Blue Dragons won five tournaments, tying for the second-most team wins this season. The Dragons won their fourth-straight Jayhawk Conference championship and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/lindstrom_alex_7wqw">Alex Lindstrom</a>&nbsp;became the fourth-straight Hutchinson player to win the individual KJCCC championship.

The Dragons have three golfers in the GolfStat Top 20 NJCAA rankings this season.

Clemons is ranked No. 2 in the rankings with a stroke average of 72.11. Lindstrom is seventh with a stroke average of 72.33 and Saffell is 13th at 73.11 strokes per round.

The Blue Dragons qualified for their 22nd-straight national tournament with a third-place performance at the Plains Regional Tournament at Crestview-North in Wichita two weeks ago.

Ja Rule with Disco Lines Set to Perform at Kansas State Fair September 16​

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Recreation Commission announced Friday the hiring of Denice Gilliland as its new Neighborhood Development Manager. She will begin this role on the Hutch Rec leadership team on June 1.

At Hutch Rec, Gilliland will be responsible of the work being done through the Hutchinson Healthy Neighborhood Initiative (HHNI), which works collaboratively with residents, community partners, and service/community organizations. Currently there are seven featured neighborhoods in the HHNI.

Gilliland and Adam Stewart, neighborhood development coordinator, will continue to work in the development and implementation of innovative neighborhood development strategies and programs to encourage and provide opportunities for investments that will create pride in all Hutchinson neighborhoods.

“I am excited to be working directly with the community members and helping neighborhoods dream about what is possible for them in ways that are innovative and new,” Gilliland says.

Gilliland comes to Hutch Rec after working as the Director of Community Impact for the United Way of Reno County and has a diverse background encompassing the business and nonprofit sector. She is a Hutchinson native and a graduate of Bethany College, where she majored in secondary education and political science.

Gilliland is married and the mother of three children. In her free time, she enjoys camping, allergen-friendly cooking, and cheering on her youngest daughter in competitive cheerleading.

Gilliland to join Hutch Rec

Patricia Dell Olson, 88, died at Hospice House, Hutchinson, on April 25, 2023. She was born December 9, 1934, in Anthony, to Homer and Della (Hockett) Donovan.

Pat graduated from Claflin High School in 1952. She went on to get degrees from Kansas State Teacher’s College, Wichita State, and Emporia State University. Pat taught in several places, including: Burlingame, Garden City, Norton, Haven, and Parsons. She taught French, English, and Spanish. Pat loved to bake and was an avid reader. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting, and quilting. Pat also enjoyed genealogy and would research family history for her and her husband. More than anything she loved to travel and take RV trips with her husband, Everett and their rat terrier, Button.

On October 25, 1974, Pat married Everett Lee Olson, in Garden City. They shared 45 years of marriage before his passing on April 12, 2020.

She is survived by: daughters, Patricia (Frank) Geiger, Erie, Connie (Tom) Ankenman, Hutchinson, and Debbie (Larry) Schiffelbein, Garden City, Diana Brooks, Salem, Oregon; four grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.

Pat was preceded in death by: her parents, husband, and son.

Graveside service will be 2:00 Friday, June 2, 2023, at Odense Cemetery, Erie, Kanas. Friends may sign the book from 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday during the month of May at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Hospice House, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

HutchCC hosting summer camps

Janet Gail (Epperson) Nichols, 79, passed away peacefully at her home in Lenexa, Kansas on Monday, May 8, 2023.

Janet was born on August 10, 1943, in Reno County, Kansas as the oldest of two daughters to Galen and Parkalene (Coffey) Epperson. She graduated from Partridge High School in Partridge, Kansas. She received her Bachelor of Science in Education from the Emporia State Teachers College with an emphasis in Home Economics, and her Master of Science in Education from the University of Kansas. She began her teaching career at Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kansas, where she met the love of her life, her husband Charlie. Janet and Charlie were married on December 27, 1967, and enjoyed a very long, happy, loving marriage until her death.

The majority of Janet's teaching career was spent in Family and Consumer Sciences, taking great joy in teaching sewing and cooking to both junior and senior high school students at Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kansas and Hillcrest Junior High School/Westridge Middle School in Overland Park, Kansas. She also served as a school counselor at Central Junior High School in Kansas City, Kansas. She retired from teaching in 1998.

Throughout her life, she took great joy in her family and many friends. Her creativity and exceptional culinary skills made every holiday and family dinner an event to remember. Her amazingly positive outlook brought happiness and joy to everyone she met. Her strength through adversity served as an inspiration to her family and friends.

When she was diagnosed with Sjogren's Syndrome, very little was known about the disease and little to no resources were available to patients. She spearheaded the efforts to develop the Greater KC Sjogren's Syndrome Support Network, bringing in physicians and other medical professionals to monthly meetings to educate and inform not only Sjogren's patients but their families as well.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Galen and Parkalene Epperson and her stepmother, Vada Epperson Lewis.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Nichols of the home, her children Karen (Terry) McAbee of Olathe, KS and Matthew (Enki) Nichols of Lone Tree, CO, and grandchildren Michael McAbee, Kansas City, MO, Christopher McAbee, Phoenix, AZ, Jacob Nichols, Seattle, WA, Julia Nichols, Emilie Clements, Erin Clements, Lone Tree, CO., sister Patti (Steve) Yust, Sylvia, KS, nephew, Rob (Jen) Tope, Iva, S.C., two nieces, Shelly (Mike) Todd, Baldwin City, Ks and Sheri (Terry) Van Buren, Hutchinson, KS and great nieces &amp; nephews.

Future fire and EMS camp filling up fast

Vernon Wier Norton, 77, passed away May 9, 2023, at Hospice House, Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was born December 6, 1945, in Eye, England, to Kenneth W. Norton and Netta (Jolly) Norton.

Vernon was a graduate of Kermit High School, Kermit, TX, and earned an Associate Degree in Law Enforcement from Seward County Community College, Liberal, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp;He served in the United States Navy from April 1965 to November 1968.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

On July 4, 1970, Vernon married Rosemary E. Lucas, in Denver, CO.&nbsp;&nbsp;They shared over 52 years of marriage.

He is survived by:&nbsp;&nbsp;his wife, Rosemary Norton of Hutchinson, KS; children, Vikki (Christopher) Mader of Nickerson, KS, and Brenton (Lindsay) Norton of Katy, TX; grandchildren, Kalie Mader, Brandy (Rex) Farmer, Jacob (fiancée Kadie Smith) Mader, Sophie Mader, Luke Norton, and Blake Norton; and brother, John Norton of Kermit, TX.

FORT SCOTT – Held to three total hits on Wednesday, the Hutchinson Community College baseball team dropped Game 1 of the Region VI (Plains District) Tournament opening-round series on Wednesday at Lions Field.

Fort Scott hit six home runs and two Greyhound pitchers kept the Hutchinson offense quiet as the Blue Dragons dropped an 11-0 decision in seven innings to trail the best-of-3 series 1-0.

Game 2 of the series will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Lions Field.

Fort Scott, the leading home run-hitting team in the KJCCC this season, showed that power off in Game 1. The Greyhounds led off with home runs from Brody Szako and Evann Long. Szako hit two home runs in the game. The final homer, a two-run blast by Ayden Slott, ended the game in the seventh inning.

Blue Dragon starter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2022-23/bios/smith_justin_u248">Justin Smith</a>&nbsp;(2-2) pitched two-plus innings. He left the game in the third with an injury he sustained in the first inning when he was struck with a hard ground ball up the middle.

The last time the Blue Dragons dropped Game 1 of an opening-round series and rallied to win the series game in 2019. The Dragons dropped the opening game to Labette and Hobart-Detter Field and won the next two games 13-4 and 2-0 to advanced to the eight-team double-elimination tournament.

⚾ Blue Dragons fall in game 1 to Fort Scott

The 2023 Jayhawk Conference champion Hutchinson Community College softball team landed 11 players on the All-Jayhawk Conference/All-Region VI postseason teams, which were released on Wednesday.

Blue Dragon single-season and career record holder&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/goetz_aspen_qe50">Aspen Goetz</a>&nbsp;and 17-game winner&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/pennycuff_morgan_4wht">Morgan Pennycuff</a>&nbsp;led the Blue Dragon contingent as first-team selections.

Pitcher&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/wertz_riley_hm55">Riley Wertz</a>, third baseman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/sandoval_olivia_qojo">Olivia Sandoval</a>&nbsp;and outfielder&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2022-23/bios/darnell_jaeleigh_lirb">Jaeleigh Darnell</a>&nbsp;were second-team selections. The Blue Dragons won the Jayhawk Conference league title for the first time in 31 years and set a school record for wins with a 44-8 record. The team set seven team records and tied another this season that ended in the Region VI championship game.

ASPEN GOETZ – 1st Team A sophomore first baseman from Rose Hill, Goetz put together one of the best single seasons in Blue Dragon history – a season that included numerous career, season and single-game records.

Goetz set both single-season and career records for home runs with 20 this season and 27 for her career. She obliterated the Blue Dragon single-season RBI record with 98 this season. That mark ranked fourth in the NJCAA at the end of the regular season.

Goetz owns the top two single-game RBI performances in program history. She had 10 RBIs against Seward County on March 22. She followed that with nine RBIs in a home game against Seward County on April 27 at Fun Valley.

For the season, Goetz posted a .462 batting average (No. 3 in Blue Dragon season history) with 80 hits (No. 3 in Blue Dragon season history). She had 17 doubles and scored 61 runs. Goetz's .908 season slugging percentage is second-best in single-season history.

Goetz tied for a season-high 23 multiple-hit games, including one five-hit game and a record-tying six-hit game against Seward County on March 22. She had six games of five or more RBIs.

MORGAN PENNYCUFF – 1st Team A sophomore pitcher from Augusta, Pennycuff had the most pitching wins in a single season since 2018, going 17-3 this season. Pennycuff earned two Region VI Tournament wins.

Making 23 starts and 24 overall appearances, Pennycuff worked a season high 87 1-3 innings with a 3.29 ERA. She had four complete games, two shutouts and combined on six other shutouts. She was part of one combined no-hitter against Northwest Tech.

Pennycuff had 82 strikeouts and walked 30. Opponents hit just .228 against her.

Pennycuff helped the Blue Dragons post a team 2.80 earned-run average, the second-best team mark in program history. She allowed less than one hit per inning, giving up 74 total hits.

RILEY WERTZ – 2nd Team Earlier this season, the sophomore closer from Maize became the Jayhawk Conference career record holder for saves. After eight saves in 2023, Wertz now has 17 career saves in her two years as a Blue Dragon.

Wertz made 36 appearances this season, posting a 3-2 record with a 1.88 ERA, the sixth-lowest ERA in single-game Blue Dragon history. Over 67 inning of work, Wertz struck out 117 batters, 13th most in single-season history.

For her career, Wertz went 16-3 with 17 saves and a 1.59 earned run average. In 149 2-3 innings, Wertz had 269 career strikeouts, fifth most in program history.

OLIVIA SANDOVAL – 2nd Team The freshman third baseman from Newton broke the Blue Dragon single-season record for doubles with 22 this season. Her 77 total hits ranked No. 4 in single-season Hutchinson history.

Sandoval hit .435 with two home runs and 59 RBIs. She scored 60 runs this season.

Sandoval had 22 multi-hit games with a season-high four hits. She closed the season on a 16-game hitting streak, which is the fifth longest in program history.

JAELEIGH DARNELL – 2nd Team A freshman outfielder from Auburn, Nebraska, Darnell hit .394 this season with 41 total hits. She had nine doubles, a triple and four home runs. She had a .615 slugging percentage and a .515 on-base percentage. Darnell drew 23 walks. She scored 32 runs and drove in 34 RBIs.

Darnell had 10 two-hit games this season. She hit a big three-run home run against Barton on April 12 at Fun Valley, helping the Dragons to a 9-1 victory.

MADISON GRIMES – Honorable Mention A third-year sophomore from Andale hit better than .400 for the second time in her Blue Dragon career, Grimes hit .415 with a .459 on-base percentage and .596 slugging percentage. Grimes had 71 total hits with 14 doubles, four triples, three homers and 55 RBIs. Grimes also led the team with 22 stolen bases. Grimes scored 69 runs and produced several incredible defensive players as shortstop.

For her Blue Dragon career, Grimes is the career leader in batting average (.444), at-bats (482), hits (214), runs scored (180), RBIs (174), doubles (42), triples (11), total bases (335) and extra-base hits (72). She is No. 2 in stolen bases with 81.

Grimes' 214 hits are third most in Jayhawk Conference history.

RILEY WERTZ – Honorable Mention At the plate this season, Wertz hit .381 with 40 hits. She had six doubles and 10 home runs, which ties for ninth most in single-season history. Wertz had 46 RBIs and her .724 slugging percentage ranked No. 13 in program history.

Wertz produced the third-highest single-game RBI total in program history when she drove in eight RBIs against Northwest Tech on April 19.

ALLIE STIPSITS – Honorable Mention A sophomore catcher from Olathe, Stipsits had a solid season hitting .296 in 50 games this season. Stipsits had 45 total hits with 11 doubles, three home runs and 22 RBIs.

Defensively, Stipsits had a .991 fielding percentage, throwing out 5 of 44 stolen base attempts. She had just three errors on 327 total defensives chances.

EMILY MUNSON – Honorable Mention A sophomore starting pitcher from Omaha, Nebraska, Munson had a 7-1 record with a 3.84 ERA in 19 total appearances and 16 starts. Over 54 2-3 innings of work, Munson allowed 64 hits and 34 runs with 34 strikeouts and 16 walks. Opponent hit .287 against Munson this season.

KORRI LIES – Honorable Mention A freshman multi-position player from Cheney, Lies hit .301, starting 39 games in center field this season. Lies had 28 total hits with 11 doubles with 34 runs scored and 20 RBIs.

ALEXIS MASTIN – Honorable Mention A freshman outfielder from Maize, Mastin was 1 of 3 Blue Dragons with 10 or more home runs this season, including one in the Region VI Tournament. Mastin hit .372 with 51 total hits and 14 doubles. Mastin had 50 RBIs, 14 doubles and 43 runs scored.

The team set seven team records and tied another this season that ended in the Region VI championship game.ASPEN GOETZ – 1st Team A sophomore first baseman from Rose Hill, Goetz put together one of the best single seasons in Blue Dragon history – a season that included numerous career, season and single-game records.Goetz set both single-season and career records for home runs with 20 this season and 27 for her career. She obliterated the Blue Dragon single-season RBI record with 98 this season. That mark ranked fourth in the NJCAA at the end of the regular season.Goetz owns the top two single-game RBI performances in program history. She had 10 RBIs against Seward County on March 22. She followed that with nine RBIs in a home game against Seward County on April 27 at Fun Valley.For the season, Goetz posted a .462 batting average (No. 3 in Blue Dragon season history) with 80 hits (No. 3 in Blue Dragon season history). She had 17 doubles and scored 61 runs. Goetz's .908 season slugging percentage is second-best in single-season history.Goetz tied for a season-high 23 multiple-hit games, including one five-hit game and a record-tying six-hit game against Seward County on March 22. She had six games of five or more RBIs.MORGAN PENNYCUFF – 1st Team A sophomore pitcher from Augusta, Pennycuff had the most pitching wins in a single season since 2018, going 17-3 this season. Pennycuff earned two Region VI Tournament wins.Making 23 starts and 24 overall appearances, Pennycuff worked a season high 87 1-3 innings with a 3.29 ERA. She had four complete games, two shutouts and combined on six other shutouts. She was part of one combined no-hitter against Northwest Tech.Pennycuff had 82 strikeouts and walked 30. Opponents hit just .228 against her.Pennycuff helped the Blue Dragons post a team 2.80 earned-run average, the second-best team mark in program history. She allowed less than one hit per inning, giving up 74 total hits.RILEY WERTZ – 2nd Team Earlier this season, the sophomore closer from Maize became the Jayhawk Conference career record holder for saves. After eight saves in 2023, Wertz now has 17 career saves in her two years as a Blue Dragon.Wertz made 36 appearances this season, posting a 3-2 record with a 1.88 ERA, the sixth-lowest ERA in single-game Blue Dragon history. Over 67 inning of work, Wertz struck out 117 batters, 13th most in single-season history.For her career, Wertz went 16-3 with 17 saves and a 1.59 earned run average. In 149 2-3 innings, Wertz had 269 career strikeouts, fifth most in program history.OLIVIA SANDOVAL – 2nd Team The freshman third baseman from Newton broke the Blue Dragon single-season record for doubles with 22 this season. Her 77 total hits ranked No. 4 in single-season Hutchinson history.Sandoval hit .435 with two home runs and 59 RBIs. She scored 60 runs this season.Sandoval had 22 multi-hit games with a season-high four hits. 🥎 Goetz, Pennycuff lead 11 Blue Dragons on All-KJCCC Softball Team

For the second-straight season, the Hutchinson Community College baseball team opens its postseason march in Fort Scott.

The 11th-seeded Blue Dragons (30-26) play the sixth-seeded Greyhounds (35-21) in the opening game of the best-of-3 Region VI Tournament Opening-Round series.

Game 1 of the series at Lions Field in Fort Scott is Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. Game will 2 on Thursday and Game 3, if necessary, on Friday. All games are scheduled for 1 p.m. All games will be streamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network.

Hutchinson enters the Region VI Tournament winning three games in a row after losing the series opener against Colby in extra innings last Thursday. The Dragons rallied from four runs down to defeat Colby 8-7 in the final game of the regular season on Saturday at Hobart-Detter Field.

The Blue Dragons finished tied for fifth in the Jayhawk Conference with an 18-14 record. The Dragons were one of six teams in the Jayhawk West with winning records within league play.

The Dragons bring a .298 team batting average into the series with Fort Scott. Averaging 7.37 runs per game. The Dragons hit 62 home runs this season, fifth-most in the KJCCC, but fourth most in the Jayhawk West.

Hutchinson has a team ERA of 6.09 and allows 6.29 runs per game.

Fort Scott is the top home-run hitting team in the league with 127 and owns the top-two home runners in the KJCCC this season. Sophomore Brody Szako has 25 home runs and Jaret Nelson has 21 homers.

Fort Scott had a 14-game winning streak heading into the final weekend of the regular season, but lost 3 of 4 to Cowley. The Greyhounds finished third in the Jayhawk East this season with a 19-13 record.

The series features 2 of the top 3 hitters in the KJCCC this season.
