The Reno County Commission will meet Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse, with a full agenda ranging from workforce development to renewable energy and employee dental insurance rates.

The consent agenda includes approval of vouchers, juvenile policy updates, final minutes from May, an addendum to the Water District 101 (Yoder) engineering contract, a conditional use permit for a manufactured home at 4501 Scotty Lane, renewal of the Detention Center’s GAINS program grant, and youth detention contracts with 20 Kansas counties.

Among business items, commissioners will hear an overview from Kansas WorkforceONE&nbsp;following the merger of Local Workforce Areas I and II, approved by Gov. Laura Kelly in January. The merger is intended to improve services for job seekers and employers, increase efficiency, and strengthen economic development efforts across the region.

A proposed Landfill Methane Agreement with Meadowlark Renewables, LLC will also be discussed. The deal would allow the company to collect and process methane gas from the landfill and sell it into a nearby gas line. Reno County would receive 18.75% of revenues, with a guaranteed minimum of $37,500 per month. Meadowlark would cover construction costs and provide financial security for removal of facilities if the project is abandoned.

The board will also consider appointments to the South Central Kansas Economic Development District (SCKEDD). County Commission Vice-Chairman Ron Hirst has recommended Michelle Inskeep of Peoples Bank and Trust to eventually succeed him on the board, and Carissa Paxton of the City of Hutchinson to replace outgoing member Jackson Swearer.

Lastly, commissioners will review the 2025-2026 health and dental insurance premium schedule. The county is recommending a 4% increase in health plan premiums to cover rising fixed costs, bringing total funding to just over $4.78 million. Dental plan premiums will remain unchanged, with one IRS-required deductible increase for high-deductible health plans.

Open enrollment for county employees begins Aug. 18, making Wednesday’s vote on premium rates time-sensitive.

After the regularly scheduled Board of&nbsp; County Commissioners Meeting, they will adjourn into a budget work session.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After another strong season and a run to the third round of the 8-Man Division I playoffs, the Little River Redskins enter 2025 focused on reloading behind a mix of proven veterans and new starters.

“Our players have had a great summer and are showing some nice improvement,” said head coach Kevin Ayers, who begins his seventh year at Little River with a 58-13 record and a 218-52 career mark. “Good numbers should lead to very competitive practices which should transfer to the game field.”

Little River finished 8-3 overall and 5-0 in Wheat State League play last year before falling to eventual champion Central Plains. The Redskins will fill four offensive and three defensive spots vacated by graduation, but return a deep group of multi-position starters and physical linemen.

Senior Ty Janette (TE/DE), Chris Norez (OL/DL), Lakin Wege (NG), and Tristan Bristow (DL) bring strength and experience to the trenches. The backfield will feature junior Jaren Garrison (QB/RB/LB), who provides versatility on both sides of the ball, and junior Logan Schubert (RB/DB).

Kelby Rice returns to the offensive and defensive line after missing last season due to injury, giving Little River another experienced presence up front. Other key returners include senior David Crandall (OL), senior CJ Herzog (TE), senior Jaxson Konen (DB), and junior Blayne Baldetti (TE/DE).

“Our goal is to play a disciplined, physical style of football and put a better team on the field each week,” Ayers said.

Little River’s option-based offense and 3-2 defensive scheme have powered the program to consistent success under Ayers. The 2025 schedule includes critical matchups with Canton-Galva, Ell-Saline, and a rematch with Central Plains.

With solid numbers and experienced leadership, the Redskins are once again positioned to contend in the Wheat State League and make another run in the 8-Man Division I postseason.

🏈 High school football preview: Little River Redskins

After an impressive 8-2 campaign in 2024, the Haven Wildcats are turning to a new wave of skill players while leaning on a seasoned senior class to lead the charge into the 2025 football season.

Co-head coaches Drew Thalmann and Thomas Cooprider, both entering their seventh season at the helm, have guided Haven to a 32-25 overall record, including a 3-1 mark in the Central Kansas League last fall. The Wildcats reached the second round of the Class 2A playoffs before falling to Hoisington.

“While Haven is looking at having another good group of seniors returning, most of the offensive production graduated from an 8-2 2024 team,” the staff stated in their preseason outlook.

Seniors Van Loop, Aiden Hoopes, and Nash Wray combined to score 41 of Haven’s 51 total touchdowns last season. Replacing their production will be no small task, but coaches noted that sophomore Cole Brawner gained valuable experience filling in for Loop, and junior Brogan Wray, Nash’s younger brother, is expected to take over at quarterback.

Senior tight end and linebacker Grant Patry returns as a cornerstone on both sides of the ball after earning first-team All-League and All-District linebacker honors, along with second-team All-State recognition. Patry also received honorable mention at tight end.

The Wildcats return eight starters on offense and six on defense, part of a 14-member group of returning lettermen. The offensive line features plenty of experience, including seniors Aaron Logan (6-0, 220) and Jacob Myers, along with junior Cody Holzrichter (6-3, 285), a second-team All-League selection and honorable mention All-District pick.

Defensively, Haven brings back its top tackler in Patry, along with senior linebacker Jackson Wilder, who received honorable mention All-District honors, and senior defensive lineman Brock Marks.

Other key contributors include Zade Turner (WR/DB), Brogan Wray (FS/QB), and Cole Brawner (RB/LB).

Strengths for the 2025 Wildcats include a “large experienced senior class,” a “very good strength and conditioning program,” and a solid foundation from the Haven youth program. However, the staff acknowledged concerns about the “development of underclassmen” and “inexperienced skill positions.”

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Nearly 25 years after a fire destroyed the area's longtime consignment auction market, the tradition has returned. Align Auction House opened Aug. 2 in South Hutchinson, marking the first local consignment auction since the blaze that ended an era in 2000.

Nick and Taylor Nelson, alongside investors Paul and Tess Phillips, opened Align Auction House LLC at 612 S. Main in South Hutchinson, drawing 87 registered bidders to the inaugural sale. The event exceeded expectations, the Nelsons said, and set the tone for what they hope will become a cornerstone of the community.

“This is about more than just buying and selling,” Taylor Nelson said. “It’s about carrying forward a legacy, reconnecting people, and creating a place where the community can come together.”

That legacy is personal. Nick Nelson is the grandson of Ron and Jenny Gingerich, longtime owners of Real Estate &amp; Investment Brokers, Inc. (R.E.I.B.), a respected name in the region for generations. R.E.I.B., acquired in 1970 by Joe Gingerich and his sons Ron and Ralph “Doc” Gingerich, and later joined by auctioneer LaVerle Pounds, built a reputation for honesty, integrity and strong business values.

The company’s original auction market served as a central hub for consignments until it was destroyed by fire in September 2000, leaving what the Nelsons call “a noticeable gap” in the community ever since.

“Nick always wanted to bring a consignment auction back to the area,” Taylor said. “When R.E.I.B. was still operating, he hoped to take it over someday, but the timing wasn’t right. Now, thanks to Paul and Tess, we’ve been able to make it happen.”

Nick serves as auctioneer, bringing more than 10 years of industry experience and training from the National Auctioneers Association in Texas. He is known for his quick cadence, high energy and deep knowledge of the trade, qualities reflected in the company’s motto: “Your Goods. Our Gavel. Fair Market Value.”

Align Auction House accepts consignments by appointment throughout the month before each sale. The goal is to sell out completely and start fresh for the next auction. Items range from household goods and collectibles to cars, trailers, equipment, mowers, guns and tools. The Nelsons avoid low-quality mass-produced goods that draw little buyer interest.

The doors open at 9 a.m. on sale days, with bidding starting at 10 a.m. The Nelsons plan to eventually add preview hours the night before and expand from monthly to twice-monthly auctions.

For now, sales are held the first Saturday of each month. The next auction is scheduled for Sept. 6 at the South Hutchinson location.

“The support from our first sale was incredible,” Taylor said. “We’re excited to keep building this, one sale, one bid, one handshake at a time.”

He is known for his quick cadence, high energy and deep knowledge of the trade, qualities reflected in the company’s motto: “Your Goods. Our Gavel. Fair Market Value.”Align Auction House accepts consignments by appointment throughout the month before each sale. The goal is to sell out completely and start fresh for the next auction. Items range from household goods and collectibles to cars, trailers, equipment, mowers, guns and tools. With a promising core of returning playmakers and an injection of new energy on defense, the Lyons Lions are aiming to take a significant step forward in 2025 under fourth-year head coach Carl Nolan.

Coming off a 2-7 season in 2024, the Lions return a strong nucleus on both sides of the ball and are hopeful their experienced upperclassmen and rising underclassmen can help spark a turnaround.

“We are hoping to build around some returning starters,” Nolan said. “While returning a handful of starters, we will be looking at our younger classes to step up and do big things for us.”

The Lions return seven starters on offense and eight on defense, including standout Xander Young, who rushed for 600 yards and 5 touchdowns on 99 carries last season. Young was also a defensive anchor, racking up 59 tackles, including 3 for loss.

Senior Hendrix Starbuck was another two-way contributor in 2024. He led the team in tackles with 67 stops (41 solo), added 4 TFLs, 1 sack, and 3 interceptions, and returned one for a touchdown. Jace Thompson (22 tackles, 2 INTs) and Quanick Hamilton (18 catches, 285 yards, 3 TDs) also return as key contributors on both sides of the ball.

Wideout Detrell Stanley hauled in 9 receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown, while Josh Grissom, Tegan Link, and Joshsuan Hamilton round out a deep returning unit. Lyons also brings back 1st Team All-League kicker Cain Villasenor, giving them a valuable special teams weapon.

Offensively, Lyons plans to play fast and take what the defense gives them, operating with a flexible and opportunistic approach.

“This year we hope to be exciting and explosive on offense,” Nolan said. “We have a lot of key new pieces and have the ability to play fast. Our sophomore and junior classes are talented and have us excited about the future of the program.”

On defense, Lyons will debut a new 4-2-5 scheme, one focused on speed, physicality, and adaptability.

“A great defense must be aggressive and be able to blitz, while being completely sound in doing so,” Nolan said. “We must be able to identify every offensive set a team displays and both respect their offensive strengths while taking advantage of their weaknesses.”

The Lions aim to create a defensive identity built on discipline, energy, and rapid adjustments, with an emphasis on playing aggressive, fast, and fundamentally sound.

“Having the ability for a defense to recognize and adjust to a different style of offense on the fly is critical,” Nolan added. “A great defense is also able to have a short memory and learn from mistakes while on the fly.”

As the Lions build toward the future, they’ll lean on their veteran core while pushing their younger athletes into key roles early.

Nolan, who enters his fourth season with a 6-21 record at Lyons, is joined on staff by assistants Cody Bowers and Gabe Leavitt.

The Lions will look to set the tone early in non-district play before battling through a competitive district and North Central Activities Association league schedule.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Hutchinson’s Ty Adkins is set to make his debut on one of golf’s grandest amateur stages Monday at the 125th U.S. Amateur Championship in San Francisco.

The 2023 Hutchinson High graduate will tee off at 12:46 p.m. Pacific time, that’s 2:46 p.m. Hutchinson time, on the Olympic Club’s Ocean Course. He’s paired with Garrett Rank of Canada, who is also a National Hockey League referee, and Billy Davis of San Diego, who just completed his freshman season at Auburn University.

The same three will then tee off at 7:31 a.m. Pacific time, 9:31 a.m. Hutchinson time, on Tuesday.

Adkins, who recently transferred from Wichita State to South Dakota State, earned his spot with a <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/1465d6b3-6069-4f76-aa25-d4777a81c51b">6-under-par 66 in final qualifying at Milburn Country Club in Overland Park</a>. He tied for medalist honors after a blistering back nine that included a bunker hole-out eagle on the 17th hole.

It’s been a whirlwind month for Adkins, who was seventh on a waitlist just to get into his first qualifier. He advanced through local qualifying in Nebraska before sealing his trip to San Francisco.

The championship begins with two rounds of stroke play, Monday and Tuesday, before the top 64 advance to match play on the Lake Course. The event runs through August 17th.

According to Hutchinson Police, three empty railcars derailed, blocking the roadway.&nbsp;Drivers are advised to use alternate routes until the area is reopened.

No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.

Derailment blocks Halstead Street on city's east side

I stood at the edge of a two-story dock, frozen.

An hour earlier, we had left our son at a birthday party on a two-story dock overlooking the lake. While he stayed to have fun, my wife, daughter, and I joined with some friends - who also had a son at the party - on the other side of the lake.

As we arrived, I witnessed one of my friends hurl himself into the water. This dock was two stories high as well. As he surfaced, he turned toward me and shouted, “Your turn!”

I barreled up the stairs like I’d done it a thousand times—no big deal, I thought, until I reached the edge.

I’ve climbed mountains, parachuted from planes, even swum with sharks—but today, my legs trembled, my muscles froze, and my heart rate rose. I couldn’t move.

There was no danger—no jagged rocks, no strong current, no real reason not to jump.

And yet, you’d think I was standing on the edge of a skyscraper, being asked to leap without a parachute.

The night before, my young son had been overtired. My wife and I asked him to go upstairs and brush his teeth. He refused.

Not just a firm “no”—a full-blown fit. My usually sweet child transformed from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde. Tantrums and tears, he swore burglars might get him because it was dark.

We knew this wasn’t rational. He’d gone up by himself many times before. But no amount of logic calmed him. For ten minutes, he and I argued—me reasoning, him resisting, both of us escalating.

At the time, I was frustrated. He wasn’t listening. He wasn’t being logical.

But when standing on that dock, feet locked in place, I gained a deeper understanding of my son.

What I was experiencing wasn’t logic either—it was fear. Irrational, involuntary, and very real.

As I stood fighting between fact and fear, my friend and his six-year-old daughter blew past me, jumping in—twice!

The part of the brain that processes fear—the amygdala—doesn’t distinguish between real threats and imagined ones. It reacts the same way whether we’re running from a bear or peering off a perfectly safe platform into a calm lake. The fear feels just as real.

My son wasn’t being stubborn. The fear I felt now was the same fear he had faced the night before. His brain, like mine, was trying to protect him—even when there was nothing to be protected from.

As I emerged from the water, I felt exhilarated—not just from the jump, but from a deeper understanding of my son’s fear and what it takes to inspire courage.

Courage doesn’t mean being unafraid; it means choosing to move forward in spite of the fear. In that quiet realization, I gained a new appreciation for what my son had gone through the night before.

When we picked him up from the birthday party later that day, he was full of swagger.

“Dad! I jumped off the second-story dock five times! It was awesome!”

My daughter chimed in, “Daddy did too—but only once! You should’ve seen how scared he was!”

“We all get scared sometimes,” he grinned. “I might’ve been, too, if it was at night.”

He wasn’t wrong. We do all get scared. Age doesn’t insulate us from fear—it just gives us better words to hide behind. But fear isn’t something to defeat. It’s something to understand. And when it comes to parenting, that understanding might be the most important tool we have.

Because kids don’t need us to be fearless—they need us to show them how to move forward when fear shows up. They need calm more than control. Validation more than correction. Presence more than persuasion.

We all get scared. The key is not to stand paralyzed at the edge forever.

How one jump helped me understand my child’s fear

After opening last season with seven straight wins and posting its best record since 2017, Hesston enters the 2025 football season with high expectations and an experienced core ready to push the Swathers deeper into the Class 3A playoffs.

Head coach Tyson Bauerle, now in his ninth season at Hesston and tenth overall, brings a 58-40 career record, including 48-31 with the Swathers. His team went 8-2 in 2024, falling just short in the regional round with a 9-7 loss to Scott City after a season highlighted by dominant wins over league and district opponents.

“Swather Football enters 2025 with high expectations,” Bauerle said. “2024 was the best start to the season (started 7-0) since 2014 and matches the most wins since 2017. However, Swather Football 2025 plans to end the streak of 3 Regional Championship Round losses in a row and begin a new streak of reaching further into the playoffs.”

Despite graduating 11 seniors, Hesston returns 23 letter winners, including seven offensive starters and six on defense. Leading the charge is junior quarterback Jerick Humphreys, who stepped in last fall due to an injury and threw for 1,687 yards and 14 touchdowns.

“Jerick led the offense to a highly productive and balanced year in his first season as a starter,” Bauerle said. “The offense rushed for 1,841 yards and passed for 1,687 yards averaging 32.4 points per game.”

Humphreys is supported by a talented backfield of senior Blayne Wilson and junior Tim Rhodes, who both return with experience and complementary skill sets. Fullback Josh Duerksen is also expected to take on a larger role.

“Replacing Karter (Gonzalez) will be tough,” Bauerle said, “but the skill sets of all three returning backs match well with Humphreys’ skill set.”

The offensive line features standout seniors Ethan Coutre and Brody Martin, and juniors Gunner Goalden and Levi Flaming. Bauerle said the competition along the line this summer will determine how the pieces fit to form a cohesive unit.

“Although we return experience up front, we need to get the right combo to be a complete unit,” he said. “We have some depth but the best OL are also the best DL.”

Hesston’s leading receiver, senior Daxon Deering, returns as a home-run threat. Tight end Drew Bartell adds size and blocking strength, while players like Max Phillips, Kason Landes, and Eli Haug offer flexibility and depth.

“Daxon Deering had a breakout season and is a deep threat on every play,” Bauerle said. “We’ll need 3-4 guys to step up to be a threat in our passing game to complement Deering.”

On defense, Hesston returns a formidable front in Coutre and Goalden, who combined for more than 120 tackles, 10 sacks and 19 tackles for loss.

“This returning combo might be the two best DL in the area,” Bauerle said. “Coutre is one of the most explosive players this staff has had. At 6’3, 230 lbs, he was the anchor of one of the fastest 4x100 squads last track season. That is impressive for a returning All-State Defensive Lineman.”

Linebacker Josh Duerksen is the lone returning starter at that position but is expected to be a leader on and off the field. In the secondary, Jamison Kohl, Gavin Larson, and Eli Haug form a seasoned group with multiple years of starting experience.

“The defense showed major improvements last season,” Bauerle said. “With six guys returning overall and many others with experience, this group could continue what was built last year.”

Hesston’s defense allowed two touchdowns or fewer in seven of 10 games, including two shutouts.

His team went 8-2 in 2024, falling just short in the regional round with a 9-7 loss to Scott City after a season highlighted by dominant wins over league and district opponents.“Swather Football enters 2025 with high expectations,” Bauerle said. “2024 was the best start to the season (started 7-0) since 2014 and matches the most wins since 2017. However, Swather Football 2025 plans to end the streak of 3 Regional Championship Round losses in a row and begin a new streak of reaching further into the playoffs.”Despite graduating 11 seniors, Hesston returns 23 letter winners, including seven offensive starters and six on defense. Leading the charge is junior quarterback Jerick Humphreys, who stepped in last fall due to an injury and threw for 1,687 yards and 14 touchdowns.“Jerick led the offense to a highly productive and balanced year in his first season as a starter,” Bauerle said. “The offense rushed for 1,841 yards and passed for 1,687 yards averaging 32.4 points per game.”Humphreys is supported by a talented backfield of senior Blayne Wilson and junior Tim Rhodes, who both return with experience and complementary skill sets. Fullback Josh Duerksen is also expected to take on a larger role.“Replacing Karter (Gonzalez) will be tough,” Bauerle said, “but the skill sets of all three returning backs match well with Humphreys’ skill set.”The offensive line features standout seniors Ethan Coutre and Brody Martin, and juniors Gunner Goalden and Levi Flaming. From clothing closets to mentoring programs, Salthawk Community Support is working to meet the needs of students at Hutchinson High School and HMS 8.

The nonprofit, formed through a partnership of local churches, businesses, and civic organizations, operates closet spaces in both schools stocked with clothing, toiletries, and other necessities. The items are available to any student, no questions asked.

Coordinator Katie Brown said community donations — both gently used and new — keep the closets full. Items can be dropped off at Trinity United Methodist Church on Main Street, the donation box outside Credit Union of America, or arranged for pickup through the group’s Facebook page.

“We’ve never had a shortage of clothing, which is a big blessing,” Brown said. “We also receive new items like deodorant, shampoo, and conditioner from generous donors.”

Beyond clothing, Salthawk Community Support helps fund needs such as graduation tassels, prom tickets, and transportation for students. The organization also facilitates mentoring and tutoring programs in partnership with Rise Up Reno Prevention Network, providing one-on-one connections for students who need academic or personal support.

Volunteers are essential to the group’s work, from sorting clothing to mentoring students. Financial donations also play a key role in supporting programs.

The group hosts several fundraisers throughout the year, including a fall chili feed, the popular Men Cook event in January, and a first this summer, a car show, which brought in more than $1,000.

Brown credits the success of the program to its network of partners, including USD 308, local churches, civic groups, and area businesses.

Salthawk Community Support provides support for HHS, HMS-8 students

A new era of Sedgwick football kicks off this fall under longtime Kansas coaching veteran Lee Weber, and despite roster turnover and a late-spring coaching change, the Cardinals have no plans of slowing down.

“I think we have a very hungry group of young men,” said Weber, who begins his 23rd season overall as a head coach, but his first at Sedgwick. “Our hope is to execute at an even higher level in the future.”

Sedgwick finished 8-2 in 2024, going 5-1 in the Heart of America League and 3-1 in district play. The Cardinals return six starters on offense and five on defense, highlighted by a veteran core of skill players and offensive linemen that have helped maintain Sedgwick’s fast-paced spread identity.

Seniors Owen Luper (589 yards, 5 TDs) and Noah Little (469 yards, 7 TDs) lead a dynamic receiver group, while Maverick Stauth returns to the backfield after averaging 6.2 yards per carry and scoring four touchdowns last season. Stauth also led the defense with 86 tackles, 4 sacks, 8 tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles.

“Offensively, we return several starting receivers including Owen Luper and Noah Little,” Weber said. “Stauth and [defensive lineman] Riley Queen provide a one-two punch in the backfield.”

The offensive line brings back three starters, Cole McGinn, Michael Petersen, and Layton Benjamin, from a unit that averaged 270 passing yards and 150 rushing yards per game in 2024. Sophomore Holden Ferralez is expected to step in at quarterback after a promising sub-varsity season cut short by injury.

Defensively, Sedgwick will lean on a mix of returning starters and rising contributors. Luper and Little anchor the secondary, while Henry Morse, Max Lynch, and others will take on larger roles at linebacker and along the line.

“Our defense needs to hold opponents under two scores and be the best tackling team in the state,” Weber said. “Special teams being special and an advantage is critical to our success next year.”

Despite stepping into the role in late May, Weber said the summer program has been strong and productive. “We’ve taken some major steps in the right direction,” he said. “Our linemen have really done a great job putting in work, and our skill players are committed to honing the passing game that Sedgwick has been known for.”

Weber inherits a program that’s made the playoffs in each of the last several seasons and is known for its speed, discipline, and offensive firepower. His staff includes seasoned assistants Doug Mabry, Tim Hendrickson, Carey McFann, and new quarterbacks/corners coach Cory Ferralez, who brings high-level 7-on-7 experience to the mix.

As for 2025, the expectations remain high.

“Our number one goal is to go 1-0 each week,” Weber said. “We want to be a team that overachieves and is recognized for its speed, toughness, discipline, and will to win. We have some definite holes to fill, but we have hungry kids that are ready to work for it.”

“We want to take the next step as a program and compete at the high level we believe we can play at,” said Counts, now in his second season leading the Railers. “Our goal is to definitely get into the win column this season.”

Newton returns a strong core of contributors on both sides of the ball, including 11 returning starters, and brings momentum from a focused and productive offseason.

“We had a heck of an offseason and look forward to seeing that hard work carry over onto the field,” Counts said.

The Railers will lean on senior quarterback Kolbie Espada, who passed for 583 yards and four touchdowns last year, and top target Jonathan Hill, who caught 22 passes for 340 yards and two scores while also contributing 24 tackles on defense.

The backfield will feature junior Kingston Henry, who rushed for 354 yards and two touchdowns, and junior Kane Wise, who led the team with 42 tackles from his defensive back position. Kaleb Jacobs, a senior fullback and linebacker, adds experience and toughness to both units.

Other key returners include Major Giles, Clyde Thomas, Christian Henderson, and Orlando Gonzalez. Henderson made a significant impact up front last year, recording 21 tackles and 7 tackles for loss in just five games.

Special teams will be handled by junior Emerson Gering, returning as both kicker and punter.

Now competing in a competitive Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division II, Newton will look to translate offseason gains into Friday night success. The Railers are aiming to improve execution, close the gap in league matchups, and lay the foundation for long-term growth.
