HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department on Monday provided updates on their deployed firefighters for wildfires in the West.

HFD Brush 71 with Capt. Walle, Capt. Brooks and Engineer Manuel are currently assigned to Division Foxtrot working on Structure Prep and mop up operations on the Durkee Fire in Eastern Oregon. Division Foxtrot is located on the Northwest flank of the fire.

Capt. Troy Mueller has been assigned to Idaho, where he is helping with the Gwen Fire. According to the Idaho Department of Lands,&nbsp;Air resources were able to successfully drop retardant on the east side of the fire Sunday afternoon, minimizing the fire’s spread out of the river bottom.  Firefighters worked to reduce the unburned fuel load by completing burnout operations on the northern, northeastern, and eastern perimeter of the fire.&nbsp;

According to the Associated Press, more than 100 large active wildfires were burning in the U.S. on Monday.

There are also instructions on what to do about them, and who to call to report your scam information.&nbsp; After the presentation, there will be question and answer time.&nbsp; Bring a friend, and your questions and concerns for Mr. McCreary.

NAACP meeting Thursday on scams

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Commissioner Randy Parks took issue with the structure of the Love Where You Live survey that county residents are being asked to fill out by the Hutchinson Community Foundation.

"There are a couple of sections that require five answers before you can proceed," Parks said in an email to Hutch Post.&nbsp; "However, I only wanted to answer maybe two on each. We need more space to write the answers each person wants and not so many pre-written answers. That's too leading."

He said there were other questions he didn't care for, but didn't specify.

"I feel this could change the real nature of a survey to a false outcome," Parks said. "Additionally, when I was visiting with others in the community, they felt the same way I did."

This is why Parks would suggest that those who don't like the structure online ask for a paper copy.

"I know a lot of people that requested paper so they could write the things they feel were important," Parks said.

Hutchinson Community Foundation responded in an email to Hutch Post on Wednesday.

“The survey was not developed by Hutchinson Community Foundation staff. Rather, Hutch CF engaged a national firm, Innovation Economy Partners, that specializes in community data collection and survey implementation to design the survey” said Wendy Skellenger, Hutchinson Community Foundation communications officer, “so it’s IEP’s experience and expertise that has informed how the questions are structured. The assessment aims to strike a balance between gathering solid quantitative data and insightful qualitative data. We know people are paying attention to many things, and the survey offers respondents the opportunity to rate those areas. And because we know the survey may not cover all the areas that a person feels are important, the questionnaire provides space for respondents to expand on their thoughts. IEP will create reports from the surveys for communities to use in whatever way makes the most sense for them and hopefully as a starting point from which to further focus on agreed priorities.

“The Love Where You Live Community Empowerment Initiative is a three-year experience that will include resident engagement in the fall, and as we refine this process for years two and three, we are always open to feedback and welcome a conversation to discuss questions and concerns in depth by calling us at 620-663-5293.”

Julie Bugner-Smith was given the Golden Ticket by Kansas State Fair mascot, Ike the Bison and Kansas State Fair General Manager Bryan Schulz.&nbsp;

The Fairified Golden Ticket Giveaway is new in 2024 and offers Bugner-Smith and her husband the ultimate experience for the 2024 Fair, including $2,000+ worth of gate, ride, and concert tickets and featured vendor items.

"We have grandchildren now," Bugner-Smith said. "We'll probably take them. They are just about old enough, they are seven and five, to kind of experience the fair. They've gone once, but you know, they've been little, they really haven't gone to all the rides and done all the food and everything, Old Mill ride and the exhibits and everything. This will be fun for us to take them."

Bugner-Smith and her husband will also be able to attend two concerts during the fair. The promotion was really well received with 9500 entries for the single golden ticket prize.&nbsp;

The Kansas State Fair is less than 40 days away. It runs Sept. 6-15 in Hutchinson.

Thursday, March 27 will serve as an off day for the final four teams. During this off day, there will be a luncheon to celebrate the final four teams ahead of the semifinals that will be played on Friday, March 27. 🏀 MBB: All-Session Tickets now on sale for NJCAA national tournament

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — Demolition has begun on the middle school gym wall at Pretty Prairie, as they prepare to expand the gym as part of the bond projects they are getting completed.

In May 2023, voters in USD 311 passed a total bond of $7.7 million. At the elementary school, the list is secure entrances, new roof, new windows. For the middle school, it's secure entrances, new roof, new windows, repairing the auditorium ceiling and then remodeling space that the district currently has for a new gym space.

The district will add on about 6300 square feet to complete the gym remodel. That will replace the current competition gym. Then, at the high school, it will be secure entrances, a new roof, new windows, there will also be a breezeway to connect the middle school and the high school.&nbsp;

The district will additionally focus on ag shop ventilation and electrical upgrades, as well as the high school science lab will get electrical and ventilation and gas repairs.

HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. — The Harvey County Road and Bridge Department will begin a regrade project Wednesday on South East Lake Road between Southeast 48th and 36th streets.

East Lake Road will be closed to traffic during daily construction, but will reopen to traffic after work concludes each day. Residents will continue to have access to their properties, but delays may be possible.

KDOT announces approved July bids

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson is holding a community meeting on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Stringer Fine Arts Center on the HutchCC campus.

"We are going to have more of an interactive town hall," said city spokesperson Jessica Woodyard. "It's going to be questions like, what are your top issues that the city should prioritize? How do you like to receive your information? What are better ways that the city can communicate with you? We'll also ask questions like, what concerns you about our community? What are some things that the city is doing well?"

The intent is to have those that are closest to the issues be in attendance.

"We will have city council present," Woodyard said. "We will also have many department heads, representatives from all departments there, to engage in conversation. We'll have questions posted around the room. We invite residents to walk through and make their own notes, write down their thoughts, so we can collect these ideas and really put it to good use for the future of Hutchinson."

The idea is that it can be a one stop shop if you have an issue with the city, so you don't get the communication breakdown that can sometimes happen.

"We want to put all of those questions in front of the right people to answer them, and also bring more conversation out of it, not just a question and answer," Woodyard said. "Real conversation, to talk about some of these things that the public is wanting to know answers on."

All Hutchinson residents are encouraged to attend.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The water agreement to mitigate the nitrate issue in Yoder Water District 101 is on the agenda for the Board of County Commissioners at their meeting on Wednesday.

According to agenda documents,&nbsp;Yoder Water District has been negotiating the terms of a water purchase agreement with the City of Hutchinson for several months. Without additional water supply the Water District will not be able to serve all of its consumers, and the City of Hutchinson is the most convenient option. Presented for approval is the final agreement written by the City of Hutchinson. Once approved by Reno County it must be approved by the City of Hutchinson.

The water rates paid by Yoder Water District consumers may be increased to account for the price of purchasing water from the City of Hutchinson at the rates in the agreement.

The specific amount of the charge is put into agenda documents by reference to Hutchinson city code and is consistent with charges to other outside entities to which the city provides water. The numbers themselves are not in the agenda documents.

The Board of County Commissioners meets Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse.

"Then we are also on Monday, Aug. 5 12 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 6 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Wednesday, Aug.7 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church."

The need is always great in the summer months.

"We continue to stress that blood and platelet donors are critically needed right now to support life saving transfusions this summer," Davison said.&nbsp; "You know, full summer calendars, holiday plans often prevent donors from being able to donate. We definitely could use the support to help finish off the summer."

Blood drive starts Friday 

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— Reno County Commissioner Ron Hirst said in a conversation with Hutch Post that the property tax portion the county receives is not a majority of what is assessed.

"The percentage that the county receives from ad valorem taxes, property taxes is about just under 22%," Hirst said. "About 46% give or take a percent or so is Hutch Juco and USD 308 and about 24%, it goes to the city itself and the rest are other items, Hutch's library and Hutch Rec and so forth. The county is the one that does the appraisal, though that is based on state statute and they are the one that sends out the bill, but they don't get to keep even most of the money, and inflation is impacting government just like everywhere else.

"There's really not much government can do, and I've said this before a few times, but to provide the needed services, you either, as inflation eats into all of us, including our home budgets, you either have to decrease the services or decrease what you're doing at home," Hirst said. The Board of County Commissioners meets the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month at 9 a.m. at the Reno County Courthouse, and they have the option to meet the fifth Wednesday, when there is one, as they are doing in July.

Hirst: County sends the bill, but others get majority of property tax

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The new graduation requirements for high school students in Kansas start with the class that will be freshmen in the 2024-2025 school year.

"The ELA portion of it, the English/Language Arts, that's in the communications piece," said Buhler High School principal Michael Ellegood. "You say, well, English is communications. It is, but the major change that they are making there is they are making speech, debate, journalism and forensics required for all students, at least a semester worth of that."

Ellegood said HutchCC provides some of those classes and the rest are covered by Debate and Forensics coach Mr. Yates. There's also going to be a change in the STEM requirements.

"They have added a STEM elective," Ellegood said. "That just means that they have to take an advanced course. That can be in technology, it can also be in computer science, math or science, but the other one that's really fortunate for us is that it can be in agriculture. We're very fortunate to have one of the largest ag programs in the state of Kansas."

Graduates will also need two post-secondary assets.

"Post-secondary assets can be anything from some of the testing that we give, college credits, WorkKeys tests, ACT score of 21 or higher, CTE scholars, attendance, participation in activities, we have a high percentage of students there, it can be Eagle Scouts, or Gold Scouts, there's a list from the state of about 30 or 40 things that they allow us to do."

KSDE would also like to see all students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, but students can opt out of this.

If you'd like to have your car in the car show on Saturday Aug. 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the entry fee is just $15, but you need to call ahead to get on the list by Aug. 29 at (620) 663-9195.

The band Fifty Years Late is scheduled to play.&nbsp;

Originally formed in 1957 by two Oxford, KS high school students, the group broke up in 1961 as they headed off to college and reformed in 2011 after the band members entered retirement. The trio plays early rock 'n' roll, performing in the style of legendary 1950s and 1960s acts such as the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Johnny Rivers and more!&nbsp;&nbsp;

Proceeds from the car show will benefit the Alzheimer's Association.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— Gas prices are still lower in Kansas than most of the country.

"We've really been stable here for the last couple of weeks," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "We did see a bit of a jump here in Kansas earlier in the month around the July 4th holiday, but it's been fairly stable over the last few weeks. We're at $3.17 a gallon right now on average across Kansas, and that's $0.34 less than the national average of $3.51 a gallon, and that puts us eighth lowest in the nation. So, we have seen a little bit of an uptick over the last week. We're up one cent, and from a month ago, we're up nine cents here in the state. But overall, not too bad, especially when we look at the national average, and we look back a year ago here in Kansas, and we were at $3.42 a gallon, so about a quarter more than we are now."

Area county prices are on either side of the state average.

"Oil prices have fallen quite a bit," Steward said. "Back in April, a barrel of oil was in the upper $80, but today we're about almost $10 a barrel cheaper than that, around $77. So, that might mitigate any upward pressure on pump prices in the near term."

Kansas and points to the south are the cheapest section of the country at the pumps generally.&nbsp;

"Kansas has been in the top 10 in terms of cheapest average gas prices in the nation for quite a while now, so that's generally where we fall, so it's a good place to be. You know, it's obviously much higher gas prices, especially when you head out to the Mountain West or the West Coast, and certainly the East Coast is quite a bit higher than us as well."

The lowest state in the continental U.S. is Mississippi, at an average of $2.99 a gallon as of Friday.

AAA: Kansas still well below national gas price average

At the end of HRMF’s fiscal year, a budget of $750,000 was solidified to support this new program and initiative, which focuses on a three-year commitment from the provider in exchange for a housing incentive to purchase a home in Reno County.

“Hutchinson has a history of being a place of opportunity for people to create their own paths and have a direct impact on the improvements they want to see in the area. With excellent school systems and a small-town community feel with access to major highways and metropolitan areas, this is an ideal place to raise a family, make a difference and grow your career. This program invites providers into our community,” says newly appointed Foundation Board Chairman Ann Bush. The program is extended to doctors, advanced practice providers and therapists at this time.

Because Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System is the county’s leading employer, there are major benefits to providers living in Reno County. “In addition to improving access to healthcare services, there are economic impacts for our community,” explains Benjamin Anderson, President and CEO of the healthcare system. “We are so proud to call this town home, and our system is strategically seeking out providers to join our call to live among our neighbors, families and friends.”

The first recipient of the program is Dr. Doug Moore, who has moved his family of 11 to Reno County and will begin providing services later in August.

WICHITA, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College football team is favored to win the Jayhawk Conference, the conference announced at its Media Day on Friday at Riverfront Stadium.

The Blue Dragons have now been the preseason favorite to win the title for six straight seasons.

"This conference is a gauntlet, and you've got to bring your 'A' game each and every week," HutchCC head coach Drew Dallas said.

Dallas has a record of 38-4 entering his fifth season as the Blue Dragons head coach.

"I'm really excited about the football team we have put together," Dallas said. "It all starts with our staff who's gone out and recruited a good group of guys and just continues to develop them."

Dallas spoke about the depth of this years team and how that will be a big factor entering the season.

"You're going into a new season and constantly looking at a depth chart and a roster of who you've got and trying to build a team," Dallas said. "I really like the development we've had in the weight room, on the field conditioning wise, and just the maturity this team has. I think one thing that is going to be big for us is just having good quality depth."

Hutchinson finished the 2023 season with a 10-1 record, its only loss coming in the NJCAA national semifinal to East Mississippi.
