Taylor ‘Frankie’ Francis Terry, 31, of Hutchinson, died September 25, 2023. He was born February 21, 1992, in Wichita, to Tracy Sherman and Elizabeth Mary (Halula) Terry.

Taylor graduated from Central Christian School and then attended Hutchinson Community College. He worked as an arborist for BARC Tree Care in Hutchinson.

Frankie was a very artistic and creative person. He enjoyed music, playing piano, drawing, and building things with his hands. His artistic skills were evident in other areas of his life and he enjoyed staying busy and always had multiple projects going on at the same time, including but not limited to working on his vehicles, woodworking, building pergolas, tables, and any other projects that he thought his loved ones would enjoy. He also enjoyed being outdoors and any outdoor sport, especially kayaking, wildlife and nature. Taylor was a very caring soul, he showed compassion and love to all people he met. He was a devoted son, brother, uncle, and friend. &nbsp;

Taylor is survived by: his parents, Tracy Terry of Hutchinson and Elizabeth (Dennis) Goff of Holton; sister, Brittney (Jake Neff) Terry of Goddard; niece, Lydia Mazur; nephew, James Mazur; significant other, Michaela Schommer; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by: his paternal grandparents, Kenneth and Ina Terry; maternal grandparents, John and Sharon Halula; uncles, Brian and Matthew Halula.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 30, 2023, at Elliott Chapel with Pastor Philip Lee officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may sign his book Wednesday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Boys and Girls Club received a $20,000 grant to open a Cox Innovation Lab at their Avenue A location. The lab opened on Tuesday with a ribbon cutting.

Since 2003, Cox has provided more than 100 innovation labs for boys and girls clubs.&nbsp;

"That's where Cox  comes into play,"said Mandy Wilbert with Cox.&nbsp; "We are really focused on making sure every kid has the opportunity to learn." Every kid has the opportunity going forward. We are going to bridge this gap together with the Boys and Girls Club."&nbsp;

Community leaders and members of the Boys and Girls Club were present to see the new lab. Senior Vice President and Regional Manager for Cox Coleen Jennison talked to club members about the importance of the lab and internet access.&nbsp;

Jennison told the children that their generation has taught adults the importance of using the internet for educational uses in every day life.&nbsp;

"We would not be here celebrating this Cox Innovation Lab at your club without you all," Jenison said to the kids. "Did you know that? You guys are the rock stars."&nbsp;

The lab's purpose is to provide assistance for youth with homework, research, employment and college preparation.&nbsp;Local youth will also have the opportunity to learn about robotics, STEM and 3-D printing.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Treasurer's office has partnered with American Century Investment Management, Inc. to offer the Learning Quest 529&nbsp;Education Savings Program.&nbsp;

"If we don't plan, with the increasing costs of college, it starts to take options off the table," said Kansas State Treasurer Steven Johnson. "We want to help Kansas families to prepare, so that whatever the best education route for their student is, it is something they are able to do, that they don't have to rely on debt. Just in Kansas, student debt tops $12 billion. The average student is $32,000 in debt. We don't want that to have to be the central cornerstone, where someone is starting out with that liability. This is just a great way to plan ahead."

Money from a 529 plan can be used for more than just traditional college tuition.

"While it is college savings month and we want to celebrate that, with the 529 plan, it can now be used for K-12 tuition," Johnson said. "It can be used for tuition or tools at vocational school. My nephew worked with diesel mechanic school. You could use that to buy those tools that are required to get through that program and actually be set up for the beginning of your career, all the way through graduate school. Whatever those expenses are, that's what that account is geared to fund."

State Treasurer highlights 529 program during college savings month

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — During the allotted presentation time at Monday's USD 308 Board of Education meeting, the board heard presentations on three topics.&nbsp;

Lynette McLean, Principal at Wiley Elementary School was joined by Kristi Link, Instructional Support, and Taylor Stivers, School Counselor. The group spoke about student-led conferences which Wiley will be conducting during parent-teacher conferences on October 5th. Wiley students from kindergarten to 6th&nbsp;grade have been hard at work creating their personalized Leadership Notebook that tracks their goals and progress for the trimester. The notebook is a part of USD308’s Leader in Me program.

From www.leaderinme.org: “Leader in Me is an evidence-based, comprehensive model that builds leadership and life skills in students, creates a high-trust school culture, and lays the foundation for sustained academic achievement.”

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held from 8am-8pm at all schools on Thursday, October 5th. There is no school on October 5th&nbsp;and 6th.

Sheila Berridge, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, addressed the board regarding Dyslexia support. She was joined by Assistant Superintendent of Special Education, Jessica Engelland. Berridge spoke about the support that all schools within USD308 are able to provide to students with skill deficits characteristic of Dyslexia.

“There is a misnomer that parents must go beyond public schools and pay extra to support their student with reading deficits characteristic of Dyslexia. Our public schools are equipped to support these students with targeted instruction in deficit areas followed by continual progress monitoring,” Said Berridge.

Ryan Ewy, Hutchinson High School Principal, presented on the Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Dual Credit options at HHS. The programs have seen continued success as USD308 students are able to customize their high school schedule allowing them to pursue the path that best fits their needs. Around one third of students are in honors classes at HHS. “You can go anywhere and get AP, but IB is only offered in 8 schools in Kansas and Hutchinson High School in Reno County is one of them”, Said Ewy.

Ewy stated that roughly 56% of grads are heading into the workforce; 36% attend a two-year college or vocational program, and 14% attend a four-year university upon graduation. Over half of HHS seniors are enrolled in at least one dual credit course, a growing trend between HHS and Hutchinson Community College. The IB Career Path (IBCP) and Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy (HCTEA) support HHS students in their workforce readiness goals.

The next meeting of the USD 308 Board will be Monday, Oct. 9.

USD 308 Board hears presentations

Dayna Joy Richardson, 78, of Hutchinson, passed away September 25, 2023, at Hospice House, after a brief illness. She was born January 10, 1945, in Hardtner, to Bert and Polly Ann (Gaddis) Nittler. Dayna was raised on the family farm in Lake City with five brothers and was always “Daddy’s Girl.”

A career educator, Dayna was passionate about teaching and learning. After graduating from Medicine Lodge High School in 1963 and Southwestern College in Winfield in 1967, she began teaching fifth grade in Shawnee Mission. Dayna graduated again from UMKC and taught in Lawrence and then moved to Reno County, where she loved working at RCEC, ESSDACK, and Buhler USD 313. Dayna was very involved with Learning Forward Kansas.

On September 1, 1979, she married Al Disney, in Hutchinson.

Dayna loved to travel, always calling them “field trips” - an opportunity to learn. She and Al visited all seven continents, taking loads of pictures for her annual slide show. Dayna loved the theater and Broadway. She was thrilled to see Barbara Streisand in concert recently. Decorating for the holidays, especially Christmas, brought her great joy. Dayna loved big family gatherings, cooking, flower gardening, Diet Pepsi, the color blue, all things Mickey Mouse, KU and HCC basketball, and shopping. It gave her great joy buying gifts for others.&nbsp;

Dayna is survived by: her husband, Al Disney; five stepchildren whom she loved as her own, Ann Stivers (Tom Fifer), Bradenton, FL, Gaye Disney (Tom Turner), Corpus Christi, TX, Chris Disney, Kim Disney (Gene Lenhart), Jill Hayes (James), all of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Tom Stivers (Taylor), David Stivers (Niki), Christopher Stivers (Diana), Johnny Novotny III (Jill), Thom Disney Black (Audrey), Heather Disney Black (David Rees), Kayley Hamlin (Kasey), Ben Hoffhines; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Jan Nittler, Arkansas City, Kent Nittler (Sandy) Medicine Lodge, Bill Nittler (Laura), Medicine Lodge, Randy Nittler (Deb), Arkansas City, Jody Nittler (Debbie Boyce), Medicine Lodge; sister-in-law, Bev Manurzak (Zak), Wichita; many nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 30, 2023, at Elliott Chapel. The service will be livestreamed and the link to view it below will be active beginning at 9:45 a.m. the day of the service.

Running two punts back for touchdowns on Saturday against Coffeyville, Hutchinson Community College return specialist&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2023-24/bios/richardson_tre_3jar">Tre Richardson</a>&nbsp;was named the Jayhawk Conference's Special Teams Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Richardson, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound freshman from Topeka, became the first Hutchinson player to return two punts for touchdowns in the same game since 2016 in the No. 1 Blue Dragons' 37-7 victory over Coffeyville on Saturday at Gowans Stadium.

Richardson returned a first-quarter punt 63 yards for a touchdown to give the Blue Dragons' a 17-0 lead. He helped close out the Dragon scoring with a 70-yard zig-zag down the right sideline for a 37-7 lead with 7:28 to play in the fourth quarter.

Richardson is the first Blue Dragon to have two punt-return touchdowns in a game since Adrian Cross on October 3, 2016 against the Kansas Wesleyan Junior Varsity.

Richardson accounted for 133 yards on two punt returns and had two kickoff returns for 54 yards and had 196 all-purpose yards against the Red Ravens, his second game this season of 190 or more all-purpose yards.

🏈 HutchCC's Richardson named KJCCC Special Teams Player of the Week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson High School Alumni Association, in cooperation with Hutchinson High School, will induct the 24th class of honorees to the Wall of Honor on Thursday, September 28th during their annual banquet.

The 2023-24 honorees are Michael Gunther, class of 1962; Peggy Thorne Childs, class of 1967; and Bryan Miller, class of 1997.

Sponsored by the HHS Alumni Association, in cooperation with Hutchinson High School, the group will be honored during a banquet at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, September 28, in the HHS Career and Technical Education Academy, located at 800 15th Circle.Doors open at 5:30pm. The public is invited and encouraged to attend as the community celebrates these three individuals who have dedicated their lives to making Hutchinson and the world a better place.

Tickets must be purchased in advance for the banquet. Tickets cost $15 each and can be purchased weekdays in the Hutchinson High School main office, 810 East 13th, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., through Sept. 27. Checks should be made out to “HHS.”&nbsp;

These honorees and their families will formally take their place on the Wall of Honor during the pregame show of the HHS Homecoming varsity football game against Salina South on Friday, September 29. The pregame show begins at approximately 6:30 with a kick off time of 7pm.

Plaques for each honoree featuring the inscriptions below will be mounted in the Salthawk Activity Center for past, present and future Salthawks to visit.&nbsp;

Michael E. Gunther- Class of 1962- Service to the Community

“I’m very proud to be both a citizen of Hutchinson and a Salthawk.” This pride is evident in Mike Gunther’s career path and service to his community.

After graduating from Hutchinson High School in 1962, Mike worked for Carey Salt. In 1969, he joined the Hutchinson Fire Department. While working for the Fire Department, he received a degree in Fire Science from Hutchinson Community College, and an EMT Certification from the State of Kansas. After 26 years of service, Mike retired as a Captain. He also served as the Treasurer for the Kansas State Council of Firefighters. To this day, Mike holds a lifetime position as Treasurer Emeritus. Following his career as a Firefighter, Mike continued to serve the community for 11 years as a Water Meter Technician with the City of Hutchinson. In 2005, Mike began taking Tae Kwon Do lessons. At the spry age of 70, Mike obtained his black belt, in which he is currently a 5th degree. He spent numerous years providing free lessons to area youth. Mike helped local children learn not only the fundamentals of Tae Kwon Do, but also how to be a respectful and productive member of society. The commitment to community service has been a reoccurring theme in Mike’s life. He has spent numerous hours working with children, facilitating the local Muscular Dystrophy Telethon, delivering Meals on Wheels and serving at the Soup Kitchen through his church. Mike has always been an avid supporter of Hutchinson High School athletics and was instrumental in establishing the signs coming into Hutchinson commemorating the 7 State Football Championships.

Mike Gunther’s belief in public service and mentoring the youth of our community ensures him a position of distinction on Hutchinson High School’s Alumni Wall of Honor.

Peggy Thorne Childs- Class of 1967- Service to Education-&nbsp;

Peggy Childs, a graduate of Hutchinson High School in 1967, was a lifelong educator who made a significant difference in the learning experiences of Kansas kids. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Kansas and worked as a full-time and substitute elementary teacher for many years of her life. In 1987, Peggy was elected to the Hutchinson Board of Education and served on the Board for 23 consecutive years. She was re-elected five times and her tenure included several terms as the Board’s President and Vice President. During her service on the board, a number of initiatives were approved that transformed public education in Hutchinson, including: The addition of elementary school counselors, a $78.6 million bond project that allowed for improvements in every single school in the district, a summer meal program and re-designing Liberty and Sherman into 7th and 8th grade centers. Peggy was known for advocating for the education and well-being of all the children of Hutchinson, even when the decisions weren’t easy to make. She strongly believed that a quality education can change one’s trajectory in life, and that every child in Hutchinson was deserving of such an experience. Peggy also improved the lives of children in Hutchinson through her active membership on the Hutchinson Recreation Commission board, the Head Start Policy Council, and the Educational Facilities Authority of Reno County.

She took great pride in being a product of Hutchinson Public Schools and was a passionate champion for USD 308 students, educators, and staff.

Bryan C. Miller- Class of 1997- Leading lives through coaching

“Hutch High is a place that helped me grow as a young man, has given me lasting friendships, and sparked a passion for the game of basketball that has brought me back home.” Bryan graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1997. After he graduated from Wichita State University with his bachelor’s degree in Sports Management, he then went on to pursue a career in basketball that eventually brought him back home to his high school alma mater. His path to coaching wasn't a straight shot to the helm. He began his coaching career in grassroots basketball, where his program, the Kansas Select, won two national championships. That success opened the door for him to be able to coach at Butler Community College, where he eventually became the head coach. After his tenure there, Bryan moved back home to join the Hutchinson Blue Dragons men’s basketball team. The following year he came back to the Blue and Gold.

Bryan took the helm as Head Basketball Coach at HHS in 2020. The Salthawk basketball program has been transformed by his ability to inspire young players with passion, and sheer knowledge of the game. Leading with servanthood, hard work, and togetherness, the community has been impacted by the success.

2023-24 Hutch High Alumni Honorees to be inducted into Wall of Honor Thursday

Ranald Gene Miller, 78, of South Hutchinson, KS, died September 20, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, KS. He was born March 4, 1945, in Hutchinson, to Edgar and Etta Marie(Yates) Miller.

Ranald attended schools in Partridge and Hutchinson. Enlisting in the United States Army in 1962 serving until 1973, earning medals in the Vietnam War and the Korean Conflict. Following his military career Ranald graduated from Hutchinson Community College. He then worked for the United States Post Office retiring in 2003. Ranald enjoyed all things hot rods, K-State sports, walking and anything his children and grandchildren were involved in . He was also a member of Eastwood Church of Christ. More than anything he loved to spend time with his wife, children and grandchildren, always laughing and joking.

On March 11, 1966, Ranald married Ursula Wahl in Sandhofen, West Germany. They shared 57 years of marriage together.

He is survived by: wife, Ursula Miller, South Hutchinson; daughter, Claudia Holland, Pennsylvania, son, Ranald Miller, Jr., Iowa; daughters, Patches Meadows (Lyndon), South Hutchinson, Diana Krull (Jonathan),Missouri; twelve grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sister, Jamie Prichard; brothers, Edgar Miller, Melvin Lacoe, and Brad Miller, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Ranald was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Nancy Pearce.

Memorial service will be 10 am Friday, September 29, 2023, at Elliott Mortuary, with ministers Steve Hildebrand and Wayne Dewindt officiating. Robert D. ‘Bob’ Garvey, Jr., 64, of Delhi, CA, died September 22, 2023, at Hutchinson Health and Rehab, Hutchinson. He was born September 9, 1959, Mount Pilot, NC, to Robert Clark Sr and Elenore (Palmer) Garvey.

Bob studied gas turbine technology at California State University, Sacramento. Following college, he enjoyed working as a small engine repairman. Bob was a United States Army veteran. He was a loving and caring brother, grandfather, and friend to many. Bob enjoyed helping people, especially if they were going through a hard time.

In 1990, he married Sybil Caswell Butler, they shared 31 years of marriage before her passing on January 26, 2021.

Bob is survived by his: step-daughter, Marie (Tim) Herring, Atwater, CA, and three other step-children; granddaughter, Kristin Butler, Merced, CA; great-grandsons, Daniel and Jonathan Butler, Merced; sisters, Kelly Buchanan, Clovis, CA, and Vickie Clement, Citrus Heights, CA; one niece and nephew; and numerous friends who loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

Cremation has taken place; memorial service will be at a later date in California.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College President Dr. Carter File explained that the $3 million in Congressionally Directed Spending that U.S. Senator Jerry Moran announced last month at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center is just one piece of what they need to fulfill the vision for an expanded nursing program at HutchCC.

"There's really going to be three parts to this project," File said. "The first part is, we're renovating the second floor of the Peel Center, which is on 9th and Main. That will provide some simulation space and classrooms for our nursing program. We are also partnering with&nbsp;Hutchinson Regional Medical Center on their campus at the hospital. We're going to use their floor and we're going to provide the simulation equipment that will be available to not only college students, our nursing students, but also to their staff to do training. The final piece of the project is at Davis Hall. We're going to renovate and improve and open up some additional student space. All of this will be with the end result to add 20 spots to our current nursing programs."

They still have other needs that must be met to fulfill that goal.

"We have the authorization to do it right now through the Kansas Board of Nursing," File said. "What we don't have is the space. Always the biggest hurdle for us to get over in nursing is to find qualified faculty. What our accreditor would like is an M.S. in Nursing Education. That is not a common designation for most nurses. A lot of nurses do get Master's Degrees, but not the education track. The nursing faculty is not part of the grant. The grant is just for physical equipment and construction."

Because of the student to teacher ratio required by Kansas Board of Nursing Regulations, they can't have more students until they have more staff.

"We'll need at least one full-time instructor and probably a part-time clinical instructor," File said. "Plus, with the addition of all of the simulators, we're going to add probably 12 simulators, with the addition of those simulators, we'll probably need another faculty member to run those simulations and to help students learn through simulation."

The Hutchinson Community College football team is the last Jayhawk Conference team to open Jayhawk Conference play this week.

The No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons (3-0, 0-0 KJCCC) play host to the Coffeyville Red Ravens (0-3, 0-3 KJCCC) at 7 p.m. Saturday for Youth Football Night with the Blue Dragons.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) beginning at 6:30 p.m. with Countdown to Kickoff. Glen Grunwald (play-by-play), Daren Dunn (color) and Sean Boston (sidelines) will have the call. The game will be streamed exclusively on the Blue Dragon Sports Network.

Saturday's game will be the 32nd time the Blue Dragons have opened a Jayhawk Conference season with the Red Ravens. Hutchinson is 15-16 in previous conference openers against the Red Ravens.

Hutchinson brings an 11-game winning streak inside the Jayhawk Conference into the game.

Both teams come into Saturday's contest coming off bye weeks. Leading into the bye week last week, the Blue Dragons and Red Ravens have been traveling in different directions.

Hutchinson defeated No. 5 Iowa Central 27-2 two weeks ago in Fort Dodge, Iowa to start the season 3-0. Freshman defensive back&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2023-24/bios/nolan_ryan_iyfa">Ryan Nolan</a>&nbsp;tied a Blue Dragon single-game record with three interceptions. Hutchinson had five total takeaways. Quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2023-24/bios/collier_samari_cpv0">Samari Collier</a>rushed for 107 yards and passed for 176 more, running for one touchdown and throwing two more to lead the Blue Dragon offense against the Tritons.

Coffeyville, which played Hutchinson in last season's NJCAA National semifinal, has had a very un-Coffeyville-like start to the season. The Red Ravens have dropped their first three games this season by a combined total of 18 points in setbacks to Highland, Dodge City and Independence.

The Blue Dragons are tied for first in the NJCAA in scoring defense after allowing just 5.0 points per game. The Dragons rank third in rushing defense (37.3 ypg) and fifth in total defense (184.7 ypg).

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/muff_callie_ayau">Callie Muff</a>&nbsp;had season highs for kills and attack percentage to lead the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team to a sweep of Spartanburg Methodist College on Friday in the opening match of the Blue Dragon Volleyball Classic at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons won their third-straight match and improved to 13-5. The Dragons played No. 17 Indian Hills later Friday.

Muff got the start as the right-side hitter and put together her best match of the season with 10 kills on 19 attacks with one error for a season-high .474 attack percentage.

Muff's effort helped the Blue Dragons out-hit Spartanburg Methodist (9-6) .228-.101. The Blue Dragons had a 5-2 blocks advantage and a 10-3 advantage in service aces.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/golden_taniya_wjj0">Taniya Golden</a>&nbsp;had eight kills on .062 hitting. She just missed a double-double with nine digs.

Another Pioneer attack error capped the run and gave Hutchinson a 20-13 lead. Spartanburg had 11 attack errors in the opening set, the final one on set point for a 25-17 victory.

Set 2: The Blue Dragons fell quickly behind 6-1 and took a timeout. Phyllis D. Dodge, 71, passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2023 at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, Wichita, KS. &nbsp;She was born December 23, 1951, in Hutchinson, KS to Verle R. and Beulah L. (Green) Hall.

Phyllis graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1969 and worked for Kroger as a cashier and later as an accounting clerk for over 20 years. On August 12, 1972, Phyllis married Larry E. Dodge in Hutchinson. &nbsp;She graduated from Sidney's Hairdressing College and attended Baptist Bible College in Missouri. &nbsp;Phyllis enjoyed reading, gardening and genealogy.

Phyllis is preceded by her parents; husband, Larry; and sisters, Elaine Atkinson and Lynette Smith.

She is survived by her son, Matthew (Jaime) Dodge and daughter, Chelle Dodge; two sisters, Sheryl Lord and Joyce Gibbs; five grandchildren, Colten Dodge, Devon Dodge, Caitlin (Trey) Bishop, Jordan (Marisa) Dodge and Caileigh Dodge; seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. – Bluestem Communities’ Kidron Bethel Village life plan community is preparing for an executive director transition that will begin in early October and be finalized at the end of the year.

After serving Kidron Bethel Village for nine years as executive director, Linda Peters plans to retire December 31, 2023. During her tenure, Peters has guided the community through some monumental changes, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent $10.7 million Live Forward capital project that affected about 50,000 square feet of new and existing spaces.

“Linda has done a fantastic job in leading Kidron Bethel Village in ways that have tremendously enhanced the overall mission of Bluestem Communities,” said James Krehbiel, Bluestem Communities president and CEO. “Her servant leadership style has made a significant impact on those who worked with her.”

Peters also helped lead Kidron Bethel Village to the highest five-star quality ratings with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and has led the staff through several deficiency-free survey, including throughout the pandemic.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to have served Kidron Bethel Village as its executive director,” said Peters. “It’s been a privilege for me to have been a part of an exceptional team of individuals who are passionate about the work they do. I’ve grown and learned so much over these last nine years. I will miss being a part of this team, but I do look forward to beginning a new chapter of my life.”

Succeeding Peters as executive director will be Jennifer Traglia, who will begin in the role in early October. She will spend time learning from Peters through the end of the year.

Traglia comes to Bluestem Communities with vast leadership experience in a variety of health care consultant and ambassador roles, including several working with an older population. Some of Traglia’s notable positions include Director of Sales and Marketing and Wyndemere Retirement in Wheaton, Ill., and a leadership role with Wellthy, a provider of employee benefit services to help caregivers manage and coordinate care for chronically ill, aging or disabled loved ones. She also founded Grand Gen Resources, a private care management company focused on resolving caregiving challenges, and served as principal and care manager for five years. Most recently, she has served as an independent contractor, advisor, consultant and brand manager for Kannact, connecting clients with licensed mental health professionals, and Calmerry, which provides wellness support to individuals living with ongoing chronic conditions.

Traglia holds a master’s degree in gerontology from Northeastern Illinois University (Chicago) and completed undergraduate work at Michigan State University’s (East Lansing) Eli Broad College of Business, Hotel, Restaurant &amp; Institutional Management. She is a certified as an Advanced Elder Mediator through the Winnebago Conflict Resolution Center (Oshkosh, Wisc.), First &amp; Last Steps Advanced Care Planning Facilitator, and a CARES Dementia Specialist.

“The Bluestem Communities culture was an immediate draw for me,” said Traglia. “It’s filled with genuine, caring and collaborative people. The organization’s openness to grow and evolve while keeping a focus on cultivating vibrant community initiatives is a model for the industry.”

Kidron Bethel Village is one of the communities comprising Bluestem Communities, a non-profit organization that serves seniors through various living options, care settings and care-centered services.  </figure>After serving Kidron Bethel Village for nine years as executive director, Linda Peters plans to retire December 31, 2023. During her tenure, Peters has guided the community through some monumental changes, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent $10.7 million Live Forward capital project that affected about 50,000 square feet of new and existing spaces.“Linda has done a fantastic job in leading Kidron Bethel Village in ways that have tremendously enhanced the overall mission of Bluestem Communities,” said James Krehbiel, Bluestem Communities president and CEO. “Her servant leadership style has made a significant impact on those who worked with her.”Peters also helped lead Kidron Bethel Village to the highest five-star quality ratings with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and has led the staff through several deficiency-free survey, including throughout the pandemic.“I am grateful for the opportunity to have served Kidron Bethel Village as its executive director,” said Peters. “It’s been a privilege for me to have been a part of an exceptional team of individuals who are passionate about the work they do. I’ve grown and learned so much over these last nine years. I will miss being a part of this team, but I do look forward to beginning a new chapter of my life.”Succeeding Peters as executive director will be Jennifer Traglia, who will begin in the role in early October.  </figure>Traglia comes to Bluestem Communities with vast leadership experience in a variety of health care consultant and ambassador roles, including several working with an older population. Some of Traglia’s notable positions include Director of Sales and Marketing and Wyndemere Retirement in Wheaton, Ill., and a leadership role with Wellthy, a provider of employee benefit services to help caregivers manage and coordinate care for chronically ill, aging or disabled loved ones. She also founded Grand Gen Resources, a private care management company focused on resolving caregiving challenges, and served as principal and care manager for five years. Most recently, she has served as an independent contractor, advisor, consultant and brand manager for Kannact, connecting clients with licensed mental health professionals, and Calmerry, which provides wellness support to individuals living with ongoing chronic conditions.Traglia holds a master’s degree in gerontology from Northeastern Illinois University (Chicago) and completed undergraduate work at Michigan State University’s (East Lansing) Eli Broad College of Business, Hotel, Restaurant &amp; Institutional Management. She is a certified as an Advanced Elder Mediator through the Winnebago Conflict Resolution Center (Oshkosh, Wisc.), First &amp; Last Steps Advanced Care Planning Facilitator, and a CARES Dementia Specialist.“The Bluestem Communities culture was an immediate draw for me,” said Traglia. “It’s filled with genuine, caring and collaborative people. Coming off a tie-breaking win in the Missouri Southern Stampede last Friday, the Hutchinson Community College women's cross country team fell one spot to No. 6 in the latest USTFCCCA NJCAA Division I national rankings on Wednesday.

The Blue Dragon women have been ranked in the Top 10 for seven-consecutive polls, which is the second-longest run in the Top 10 since 2002.

Last Friday, Hutchinson and Butler tied for the Missouri Southern Stampede college division team title. The Blue Dragons were declared the team winner based on new team tie-breaking rules for 2023 where each teams' Top 5 runners are compared in terms of their finish. Hutchinson had its Nos. 3, 4 and 5 runners finish ahead of Butler's, which gave the Dragons the team title.

The Missouri Southern Stampede was Hutchinson's first 5,000-meter race of the season. Next up for the Blue Dragons is the Chili Pepper Festival on Sept. 29 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The Jayhawk Conference continues to be well represented in the national rankings with five teams in the Top 10.

Colby is No. 2 this week, up nine spots from the last poll. The Blue Dragons are No. 6, Butler No. 7, Dodge City No. 8 and Cloud County is No. 10. Highland is 21st this week and Barton is No. 22.

The next women's rankings come up in two weeks on Oct. 4.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Trapped alone in a Utah canyon for nearly a week and pinned by a half-ton boulder Aron Ralston had to choose between his hand and his life. He chose survival — amputating his own limb, rappelling 65 feet and hiking seven miles to rescue.

Ralston will bring his amazing, inspirational story home to Hutchinson at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 26 when he appears as part of the Dillon Lecture Series at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Ralston's heroic story is the subject of the film "127 Hours," starring James Franco and directed by Oscar-winning Danny Boyle. Boyle's film, based on Ralston's 2004 New York Times bestselling autobiography, "Between a Rock and a Hard Place," received six Oscar nominations, including "Best Picture."

Following a miraculous rescue spearheaded by his mom and with the aid of prosthetics he helped design, Aron returned to his outdoor passions, completing elite mountaineering projects which remain unrepeated even to this day. Attendees credit Ralston's story with encouraging them through disease, disability, and loss, even saving their lives from suicide and depression.

Aron's incredible triumph in the face of insurmountable odds inspires audiences to harness the power of their deepest motivations, relationships, and mindset to transform personal and professional "boulders" into their blessings. Today, Ralston continues to pursue high-altitude adventures, advocates for wilderness protection and tries to keep up with his two spirited children, Leo and Elisabetta.

Tickets to the lecture will be available beginning at 9:45 a.m. the day of the lecture at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Adventurer Aron Ralston to Present Dillon Lecture Tuesday

Robert Lynn “Bob” Loutzenhiser, 78, died September 18, 2023, at his home. &nbsp;He was born April 6, 1945, in Lyons, to Robert Ansel and Virginia (Poland) Loutzenhiser.

Robert was known as Robert, Lynn, or Bob, depending on your relationship with him. &nbsp;He graduated from Little River High School in 1964. &nbsp;Robert was a talented high school baseball pitcher, who could pitch with either arm. &nbsp;Scouts came to watch this amazing athlete. &nbsp;However, this was during the time of the Vietnam War, and Robert was drafted into the United States Army. &nbsp;During his service, Robert was shot down in enemy lines, and safely hid until he could be found by American soldiers. &nbsp;For his heroism, he was awarded a purple heart. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Upon returning to Kansas, he worked as a machinist for LMC- Lyons Manufacturing Company. After retirement, Robert enjoyed attending the NJCAA basketball tournament in Hutchinson, and cheering on the Hutchinson Junior College basketball and baseball team.&nbsp;

On June 20, 1965, he married Carolyn June Heim, in Mitchell, KS. &nbsp;She died July 14, 2012, after they shared 47 years of marriage.

Robert is survived by: &nbsp;daughter, Lynette Casey (Rick); son, Bryan Loutzenhiser (Jennifer Jackson), all of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Makayla, Drew, and Katie; two great-granddaughters; and a sister-in-law, Mary Heim of Hutchinson.

He was preceded in death by: &nbsp;his parents; brother, Larry Loutzenhiser; and brother-in-law, Fred Heim.

Graveside service will be 4:00 p.m. Friday, September 22, 2023, at the Lyons Municipal Cemetery, 821 N. Grand, Lyons. &nbsp;Military honors will be conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. &nbsp;Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

Robert was honored to go on the Kansas Honor Flight. &nbsp;Therefore, in lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Kansas Honor Flight, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS &nbsp;67501.

Kathy Diane Whitcher, 72, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2023.

She was born on April 20, 1951, in Geneva, Nebraska to Robert and Mary Erb, the first of three siblings with Jim and Lori soon to follow. After spending her early life on the Nebraska farm between Shickley and Geneva, the Erbs made a pilgrimage to Hesston, Kansas when Kath was 14. She graduated from Hesston High School in 1969 and attended Hesston College.

At HC, she met an ornery guy from Texas, Sid Whitcher. The couple soon started dating even after Sid went back home to school at Texas A&amp;I (now Texas A&amp;M-Kingsville). They couldn’t be without each other and they were married at the Hesston Mennonite Church on November 27, 1971.

The couple enjoyed playing cards, softball and even bowling together before Rusty came along in February of 1977. Mindy followed in November of 1980 before Wendy surprised everyone in November of 1991. Before Wendy arrived, the family of four still played baseball and softball with Kathy deciding it was time to cut back when she, Sid, Rusty and Mindy had four different games in four different towns at the same time.

Kathy worked a plethora of different jobs from the counter at the Hitchin’ Post, to a clerking job at Central Livestock Company in South Hutchinson. Before hanging up her working spurs, she worked at Water’s Edge as a hostess along with managing special events. Under her eye, Water’s Edge had a successful dinner theater in a partnership with Hesston College, an endeavor which sadly went by the wayside.

Her passion was horses and she organized many trail rides, from scavenger hunts to fundraiser for the Hopi Mission School in Kykotsmovi Village, AZ. She loved her horses from Charlie to Chet and loved to see people getting joy from riding as well.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mary Erb and her husband Sid.

Kathy is survived by her son, Rusty of Hesston, her daugthers, Mindy and Wendy (Terry) Whitchway of Wichita, her brother Jim (Jan) Erb of Hesston, sister Lori (John) Thimm of Beatrice, Nebraska, nephew Jesse (Rebecca) Erb, nieces Steph (Joe) Rheem, Kari (Beau) Cox, Abby (Shaun) Stover, Becca (Brandon) Kelley, several great nieces and nephews and much to her chagrin, several grand-cats.

A memorial service will be held at a later date as her last wishes were to have her ashes scattered with horses. Memorial contributions may be made to Hopi Mission School in care of Miller-Ott Funeral Home, PO Box 32, Hesston, KS 67062.

Under her eye, Water’s Edge had a successful dinner theater in a partnership with Hesston College, an endeavor which sadly went by the wayside.Her passion was horses and she organized many trail rides, from scavenger hunts to fundraiser for the Hopi Mission School in Kykotsmovi Village, AZ. She loved her horses from Charlie to Chet and loved to see people getting joy from riding as well.She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mary Erb and her husband Sid.Kathy is survived by her son, Rusty of Hesston, her daugthers, Mindy and Wendy (Terry) Whitchway of Wichita, her brother Jim (Jan) Erb of Hesston, sister Lori (John) Thimm of Beatrice, Nebraska, nephew Jesse (Rebecca) Erb, nieces Steph (Joe) Rheem, Kari (Beau) Cox, Abby (Shaun) Stover, Becca (Brandon) Kelley, several great nieces and nephews and much to her chagrin, several grand-cats.A memorial service will be held at a later date as her last wishes were to have her ashes scattered with horses.
