Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) and Barton Community College have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) establishing a new partnership aimed at expanding access to respiratory care education and addressing a growing workforce need in central Kansas.

Through this agreement, students from Barton will complete their general education requirements at Barton and then have the opportunity to transition into HutchCC’s Respiratory Care Program. The partnership was developed in response to an increased demand for respiratory care professionals in Barton’s service area, which includes nine regional hospitals."

This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to meeting the healthcare workforce needs of our communities," said Dr. Tricia Paramore, President of Hutchinson Community College. "By working together, we are creating clearer pathways for students and helping ensure that Kansas hospitals have access to the skilled respiratory therapists they urgently need."

Forecasters warn that heat index values could reach up to 107 degrees during the advisory period both Thursday and Friday afternoons. The combination of high temperatures and humidity may increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and those working outdoors.

Oversee the hiring, orientation, scheduling, performance evaluation, disciplinary action, and termination of nursing personnel. Ensure all personnel in the unit are oriented appropriately to their duties and assigned according to their skills, licensing and training. Be sensitive to the comfort level of staff members in their job responsibilities, especially with new employees. Assist in making team member assignments and work with the nursing scheduler to ensure a sufficient number of employees for each shift. If there is an insufficient number of employees on a shift, work in any nursing capacity needed to carry out the individualized care plan for each resident. Observe daily nursing care provided by nursing personnel assigned to the unit and assist in evaluating work performance and quality of care provided by each staff member. Participate in counseling and disciplinary measures as appropriate. Assist in evaluating the educational needs of nursing staff and report these needs to the DON, COO/Administrator, and the VP of HR. Evaluate resident care according to each resident&rsquo;s care plan, established policies and procedures, state and federal regulations and participate in resident care plan conferences. Assist in the ongoing development, updating and execution of the resident plan of care and physician plan of care. Communicate changes as appropriate. Confer with residents and/or families about resident's cares and concerns as appropriate; attempt to bring resolution to resident/family conflict situations. Responsible for assessing any accident/incidents, including medication errors, occurring on the Unit, and the reporting of such as per policies and procedures. Follow-up on all incidents/accidents immediately as appropriate to situation. Monitor wound care status; pass on appropriate information to medical director. Ensure the changes in orders from physician are coordinated with the resident's care plan. Assist in discharge planning upon admission, ongoing and discharge. Complete discharge summary, if necessary. Assist with/coordinate pre-admission screenings, admissions, transfers and dismissals as necessary and work with other departments on same to ensure successful transfer of residents. Robert L. “Bobby” Deck, 66, of Hutchinson, died August 2, 2025, at Hospice House. He was born December 17, 1958, in Liberal, Kansas, to Earl and Margaret (Ebeling) Deck.&nbsp;

On April 9, 1988, Bobby married Thaylia Cline at Zion Lutheran Church. They shared 37 beautiful years of marriage before his death.&nbsp;

Bobby graduated from Stockton High School in Missouri and attended vocational welding school. After he was certified, Bobby worked as a welder in many places and spent over 22 years working for Dan Dee Air. He possessed a natural talent for working with his hands and had a passion for creating and restoring things.&nbsp;

Bobby had a love for spending time in the solitude of fishing. Also, he loved auto racing and spent time traveling to go to NASCAR events and the Indianapolis 500. Bobby had an undeniable gift for grilling and smoking meats. He fabricated his own meat smoker, expertly welded components together to make “Big Blue,” which he used to smoked various types of meat for family and friends.&nbsp;

Bobby is survived by: his beloved wife, Thaylia Deck of Hutchinson; sister, Carol (Lowell) Mellenbruch of Hutchinson; Keith (Allen) Deck of Wichita; and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by: his parents; sisters, Carla Sue Wright and Patricia “Patty” Deck.

TOPEKA, Kan. — Hutchinson native and current Washburn University men's basketball coach, Brett Ballard, has been named the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association (KBCA) Four-Year Coach of the Year for the 2024-25 season.

Ballard led the Ichabods to the NCAA Division II Final Four, before falling to eventual national champion, Nova Southeastern in the semifinals. The Ichabods finished the season with a 30-4 record, going 17-2 in the MIAA, and a perfect 16-0 inside of Lee Arena.

Ballard finished up his eighth season in Topeka and guided the Ichabods to the MIAA regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the Central Region.

He is a 1998 graduate of Hutchinson High School. He then played one season at Cowley College and one at HutchCC, where he graduated in 2000. Ballard then played his final two seasons at Kansas under Roy Williams.

🏀 Ballard named KBCA Four-Year Coach of the Year

Thomas D. (Tom) Barclay, 90, died August 3, 2025 at The Wesley in Hutchinson, KS. He was born June 5, 1935 in Hutchinson, the son of Thomas R. and Bonnie Beatrice (Rank) Barclay.

He attended Arlington Public schools and was a life time resident of Arlington and Reno County. He retired from Cessna/Eaton as a production machinist and was an operator for Arlington Township. Tom provided welding services throughout the community, and many knew him through that.

Tom was one of the founding members of the Kansas Antique Racers, and wrote and edited their newsletter for many years. Tom’s #17 Champ car is currently on display at the Belleville High Banks HOF Museum in Belleville, KS. He was also a member of the Colorado Vintage Oval Racers.

On September 16, 1955 he married Lola Mae Heinrich Barclay, who still lives in Hutchinson. and would have celebrated their 70th anniversary in a few weeks. Other survivors include two daughters, Sheryl Ann Barclay, Hutchinson, KS, Bonnie Mae Barclay, and husband, Lem Meador in Peachtree Corners, GA and one grandson Cale Oliver Meador of Gleason, TN. Even though Tom was an only child, he was loved and cared for by Lola’s extended family throughout the years.

Friends may sign the book daily 9-5 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary. Funeral will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday August 12, 2025, at Wesley Towers Chapel, 3709 Asbury Place, Hutchinson, with Reverend Robbie Fall officiating. Burial of the cremains will follow at Arlington Cemetery, Arlington, KS.

The funding will support the construction of three new residential dwellings in Hutchinson, providing valuable hands-on learning opportunities for students while addressing the community’s affordable housing needs.

As part of the project, students in HutchCC’s and USD308’s Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy’s Construction Technology program will build a duplex in the 600 block of East Avenue A, gaining real-world experience in residential construction from foundation to finish. In addition, the college is partnering with Interfaith Housing and Community Services to construct a single-family, stand-alone home on 10th Avenue. Interfaith will employ Youth Apprentices associated with the Construction Technology program in the building of this home.

“These projects represent a win-win for our community,” said Dr. Tricia Paramore, President of Hutchinson Community College. “Our students are developing marketable, in-demand skills while contributing directly to Hutchinson’s housing development and revitalization efforts.”

The FRAME program is a statewide initiative designed to increase the supply of affordable housing across Kansas by fostering partnerships between educational institutions, nonprofit housing providers, and local communities. Other partners collaborating on this project are the City of Hutchinson, the Hutchinson Land Bank, the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce, Joel Haag from Mann and Company Architects, Interfaith Housing, GAF Roofing, in addition to several local contractors.

“We’re proud to support Hutchinson Community College and its partners through the FRAME program,” said Kerri Falletti, Grassroots Strategy Developer at the Kansas Department of Commerce. “This grant not only helps build homes — it builds futures by equipping students with critical construction skills while strengthening communities across Kansas.”

Construction is expected to begin this fall, with completion slated for 2026.

HutchCC receives FRAME Grant

NEWTON, Kan. –&nbsp; Samara Maple, 25, of Hutchinson&nbsp; pled guilty in Harvey County District Court on Tuesday to one count of Leaving the Scene of a Fatality Accident, according to the Harvey County Attorney's office.

The charge stems from a collision that occurred on April 8, 2024, when Laurie Oswald Robinson, of Newton, Kansas, was found deceased on the embankment beneath the SE 24th Street bridge over Interstate 135. 

Subsequent investigation determined that Ms. Robinson had been struck by a vehicle while walking across the bridge, and that the driver had left the scene without notifying authorities.

Following a thorough investigation by law enforcement, Maple was identified and charged in connection with the fatal hit-and-run.

Sentencing is scheduled for October 14, 2025, before District Judge Jason Lane in Harvey County District Court.

The Harvey County Attorney’s Office extends its appreciation to the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office and the Newton Police Department for their diligent work in bringing this case to resolution.

Hutchinson woman enters plea in fatal hit and run 

Virginia “Ginger” Mayfield, age 73, of Hutchinson, passed away unexpectedly and peacefully at home on August 2, 2025. &nbsp;Born in 1951, in Hutchinson, Ginger was an artist and lifelong learner.

After graduating from Hutchinson High School (class of 1969), she achieved a Liberal Art degree at Monticello College, a Bachelor of Art degree from the University of Kansas, and a Master of Fine Art from Wichita State University. Each summer Ginger continued to earn graduate level college credits through Adams State College by participating in the Taos Watercolor Workshops held each year in Taos, New Mexico.

The life she lived was one of joy and creativity. Ginger’s paintings are celebrations of vibrant colors which matched her personality. She shared her talents as an art teacher in Kansas, influencing generations of students at Hutchinson High School, where Ginger was a beloved art instructor for over thirty years.

She is survived by: her husband of thirty years, George “Bill” Forst; brother, Bill (Sarah); sister Janet (Randy); sister-in-law, Kathy; and 12 nieces and nephews.

Ginger was preceded in death by her parents, Erma and Martin Mayfield, and brothers, Larry and Rick.

A celebration of Ginger’s life will be held from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Saturday, October 25, 2025, at Hutchinson Art Center, 405 N. Washington St., Hutchinson. Friends may sign her memorial book from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday thru Saturday until October 4 at Elliott Mortuary.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Defending national champion Hutchinson Community College has been picked to win its fifth consecutive Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference football title in a vote of league coaches released Tuesday.

The Blue Dragons, who shared the KJCCC regular-season crown last year with Butler and Coffeyville, received 42 points and six of the seven first-place votes in the 2025 preseason poll. Hutchinson went 11-1 overall in 2024, winning its second national title under sixth-year head coach Drew Dallas.

Garden City, which collected the remaining first-place vote, was picked second with 36 points. The Broncbusters are looking for their first winning season since 2021 under second-year coach Kiyoshi Harris. Butler, coming off its 26th conference championship, was chosen third with 31 points. The Grizzlies are led by first-year head coach Kyle Woodall following the resignation of Bryce Vignery in March.

Coffeyville, which went 9-3 last season and shared the KJCCC title, was picked fourth with 29 points. Dodge City, which finished 6-4 under first-year coach Ryan Lusby, is fifth with 21 points. Independence (17) and Highland (13) round out the poll, with Tom Minnick taking over the Scotties program after a 5-6 season.

The KJCCC season opens Aug. 23, when Independence hosts Trinity Valley at 11 a.m. and Dodge City visits Tyler Junior College at 7 p.m. Highland and Butler open Aug. 30, with the Scotties hosting Snow College and the Grizzlies traveling to Northeast Oklahoma A&amp;M.

As students gear up for a new academic year at Hutchinson Community College, President Dr. Tricia Paramore is reflecting on a successful first year at the helm — and setting the tone for continued growth and accessibility in the year ahead.&nbsp;

Paramore, a longtime faculty member and administrator who began her career at HutchCC in 1996 as a biology instructor, stepped into the presidency on July 1, 2024. Now entering her 30th year with the college, she said her first year in the role was steady, productive and fulfilling.&nbsp;

“It could have been really big ups and big downs, but it wasn’t,” Paramore said. “It was really great. I’ve got a great team and our staff is amazing. Our customer service philosophy is to bring your A-game every day, be responsive and help people feel at home.”&nbsp;

That team-focused approach seems to be paying off. HutchCC celebrated another record graduating class in 2024 with approximately 1,000 graduates. Of those, 475 students crossed the stage in May, a moment Paramore called a “great time of celebration.”&nbsp;

The college also awarded more than 1,700 degrees and certificates last year — accounting for 11% of all credentials earned at Kansas community colleges.&nbsp;

“That's saying something,” Paramore said. “It speaks to the strength and accessibility of our programs.”&nbsp;

Enrollment for the upcoming fall semester is currently trending about 6% higher than last year, although Paramore noted those numbers fluctuate daily leading up to the start of classes on Aug. 20. Some specialized programs, such as physical therapy assistant training, are already underway.&nbsp;

Expanding Technical and Workforce Pathways&nbsp;

In line with changing workforce needs, HutchCC continues to expand its technical and certificate programs. Among the newest is a John Deere program in partnership with PrairieLand Partners. The two-year program, based at South Campus and the PrairieLand facility on K-61, will offer students industry-specific training, tool allowances and job placement upon completion.&nbsp;

Paramore added, “These students are going to have jobs when they finish.”&nbsp;

The push to support technical training reflects a broader shift away from the traditional four-year college track.&nbsp;

“College looks different for everyone,” Paramore said. “When you and I were in school, the four-year degree was the norm. Now, some students want to go straight into the workforce with a certificate or associate degree — and that’s great, too.”&nbsp;

Strong Presence in Area High Schools&nbsp;

HutchCC also continues to play a major role in dual-credit education across the region. Last year, nearly 2,300 high school students in 33 schools across Reno, McPherson, Harvey, and part of Rice County earned college credits through HutchCC.&nbsp;

“These students can graduate from high school already two or three steps ahead,” Paramore said. Many of the courses are part of the state’s Systemwide Transfer program, allowing for seamless credit transfer to Kansas universities.&nbsp;

Technical classes like welding, machining, auto body, and electrician training are also offered in high schools, supported by Senate Bill 155, which covers tuition for qualifying technical courses.&nbsp;

A Network of Campuses and Partnerships&nbsp;

In addition to its main campus in Hutchinson, HutchCC maintains outreach centers in Newton and McPherson, as well as numerous program-specific sites within Hutchinson — including facilities for barbering, cosmetology, fire science and agriculture diesel mechanics.&nbsp;

Paramore emphasized that HutchCC’s broad reach and partnerships make education both affordable and accessible.&nbsp;

“Eighty-six percent of our students receive some form of financial assistance,” she said. “And students who take courses in high school at the reduced tuition rate can even get reimbursed if they attend HutchCC full time after graduation. It’s almost like getting two classes for the price of one.”&nbsp;

With momentum building, Paramore is focused on continuing to meet community needs through high-quality education, responsive workforce training and strong student support.&nbsp;

“As a president, it’s not about me — it’s about how we serve our students, our community and the state,” she said. “And that’s what we’re committed to doing, every day.”&nbsp;

The action marks the latest effort in Hutchinson’s ongoing work to address code violations, safety hazards, and neighborhood revitalization.&nbsp;

The properties under consideration include:&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; • 401 South Main Street &nbsp; &nbsp; • 405 South Main Street &nbsp; &nbsp; • 806 North Plum Street &nbsp; &nbsp; • 22 West Fifth Avenue &nbsp; &nbsp; • 211 East Fourth Avenue&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; • 2100 North Jackson Street &nbsp; &nbsp; • 3001 East Fourth Avenue &nbsp; &nbsp; • 1321 East Fourth Avenue&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; • 1221 East Fourth Avenue &nbsp; &nbsp; • 411 South Main Street

Following the public hearings, the council will vote on resolutions to condemn each property. &nbsp;Some properties may be removed from this hearing depending on response from the property owners. &nbsp;

Council to discuss Memorial Hall, dangerous and unsafe buildings

A celebration of Kansas’ rural roots and mechanical heritage is rolling back into downtown Hutchinson as Antique Tractor Preservation Day returns for its second year on Friday, August 22. The event, spearheaded by Michael Hinton, founder of TalkingTractors.com, aims to honor agricultural history and engage the broader community with vintage tractor culture.

What began as a passion project for Hinton—who describes himself as “married into tractors”—has grown into a full-fledged statewide observance. “Last year was our inaugural event, and the support has just been phenomenal—from the city, the state, and even internationally,” Hinton said.

The highlight of the day will be a large display of restored antique tractors encircling the U.S. Post Office at 128 E. First Ave. This year’s lineup will include a wider range of makes, models, and colors than last year’s farmall-centric showing. The Great Plains Antique Tractor Club, of which Hinton is a member, plays a major role in coordinating local exhibits and tractor pulls throughout Reno County and beyond.

"It's like a car show—but for tractors,” Hinton explained. “They’re shined up, restored, and ready to show off. And for many families, each one has a story.”

That storytelling element is central to TalkingTractors.com, the website Hinton launched in early 2023 as a revival of a project he started over a decade ago. The platform features stories, photos, and updates about antique tractors, with the goal of preserving Kansas’ rural history.

One unique feature of the event is the special Antique Tractor Preservation Day postmark available at the Hutchinson Post Office. In recognition of the event’s cultural value, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has issued a formal proclamation for the second year in a row, and the Kansas House of Representatives passed Resolution HR 6011, designating Antique Tractor Preservation Day as an official state observance. The City of Hutchinson is expected to issue a local proclamation as well.

Hinton’s long-term goal is to see similar events emerge across the country. "Kansas is the first state with an official Antique Tractor Preservation Day," he said, “but I’ve already seen signs of growth.” One example is Bird City, Kansas, where the Tri-State Antique Engine and Thresher Association is hosting a parallel event this year.

“This is about more than just tractors,” Hinton added. “It’s about family memories, agricultural pride, and preserving the stories that built rural America.”

Antique Tractor Preservation Day set for Aug. 22

Ryan Christopher Swanson, 56, died August 2, 2025, at Hospice House, surrounded by his wife and four sons. &nbsp;He was born January 19, 1969, in Merriam, to Abbie Blevins. Ryan was lovingly adopted by Rex and Vicky Howell. &nbsp;After Rex died, Vicky married Robert “Swanee” Swanson, and he adopted Ryan.&nbsp;

Ryan graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1987, and attended Hutchinson Community College (HCC) and Kansas State University, where he graduated in 1991. &nbsp;

From a very young age, Ryan was a gifted athlete with a special love for the game of basketball. &nbsp;He played basketball for Hutchinson High School as well as HCC. &nbsp;In 1988, he helped the HCC Blue Dragons win the NJCAA National Basketball Tournament. &nbsp;After graduating from K-State, Ryan began his career coaching men’s basketball teams at various colleges, including Kentucky, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Garden City. &nbsp;From 2006-2009, he coached the Hutchinson Blue Dragons and from 2015-2022, the Buhler High School Crusaders. &nbsp;Throughout his coaching career, Ryan made thousands of connections with coaches, athletes, families, and the media, leaving an impact on everyone he ever met. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Currently, Ryan owned Phoenix Restoration and Phoenix Roofing, with his wife, Robin. &nbsp;He was a member and avid golfer at Prairie Dunes Country Club. &nbsp;Ryan enjoyed spending quality time with his family and friends especially on vacations, with trips to Las Vegas being one of his favorite get-aways. He had a fondness for all dogs, but especially his own four-legged pals- Willow, Maverick, Chief, Cali, Harley, and Stella. &nbsp;In addition, Ryan’s grand-dogs- B, Remi, Goose, Hank, Bentley, and Milo, held a special place in his heart. &nbsp;Above all, Ryan loved his family unconditionally, and was always there for them in the peaks and valleys of life. &nbsp;Ryan was proud to be a father, and proved blood does not make you a father, true love and devotion does.&nbsp;

On October 3, 2010, he married the love of his life, Robin Raye Griffey, in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.&nbsp;

Ryan is survived by: &nbsp;his wife, Robin of Buhler; sons, Chase Swanson (Taylor) of Wichita, Carson Schoenhoff (Makenzie) of Overland Park, Cayden Schoenhoff of Manhattan, and Codi Schoenhoff of Buhler; mother, Vicky Swanson of Hutchinson; sisters, Amy Waggoner of Hutchinson and Karla Reed (Timothy) of Berryton, KS; his biological mother, Abbie Call (Jerry); half-brother, Shea Call (Allison); half-sister, Kristin Call; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and a host of friends.&nbsp;

Sean A. Ray, 40, of Kansas City, MO, passed away on July 30, 2025. &nbsp;He was born June 13, 1985 in Houston, TX, to Todd and Susan (Jordan) Ray.

Sean graduated from Hutchinson High School in 2003. &nbsp;While he was in high school, Sean’s love for travel developed. &nbsp;He graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture in 2008. &nbsp;One semester was spent at the University of Western Australia. &nbsp;He worked for Clark + Enerson for 15 years starting in Lincoln, NE, before moving to Kansas City. &nbsp;He worked for Kimley-Horn at the time of his passing. &nbsp;

One of Sean’s goals was to travel to 40 countries by the time he was 40. &nbsp;In June for his birthday, he ticked off #40 and 41 ending on the island of Mykonos with his Kansas City “chosen family” friends. &nbsp;He relished playing what his family called the credit card game to get free flight miles and hotel points. &nbsp;Sean rarely flew coach or paid for a hotel while maintaining a high credit rating! &nbsp;He was already booked next year for Guatemala and Kenya.

He is survived by his: parents; brothers, Ian (Jessica) Ray of Hutchinson and Graham (Ursula Rothrock) Ray of Los Angeles, California; loving adored nieces, Elliott, Emerson and baby Joan; aunts, uncles and cousins as well has his wide, wide circle of “chosen family” and friends.

Sean was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Reins of Hope, a nonprofit therapeutic riding center, has been improving the lives of individuals with disabilities since its founding in 1994. Located on the east side of Hutchinson, the program is dedicated to enhancing the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of riders through horseback therapy.

“We are a therapeutic riding program, and we belong to the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, or PATH,” said Jane Harder, the organization’s director. “We work with individuals with all types of disabilities, from physical to mental and emotional challenges, to help improve their quality of life.”

Harder explained that the therapeutic benefits of horseback riding are vast, including increased self-confidence, improved motor skills, and enhanced social and communication abilities. One of the unique aspects of the program is its focus on both children and adults, serving a wide range of individuals with diverse needs.

“We’ve seen a lot of success with our clients who struggle with mental health issues,” Harder said. “Therapeutic riding helps with anxiety, depression, and socialization, and it gives them a sense of calm.”

The center's approach goes beyond just riding; it integrates a team effort with parents, teachers, and other health professionals to tailor lessons to each rider's needs. Harder pointed out that the horses themselves play a crucial role in the therapy, acting as gentle partners in the process.

“Horses simulate the human gait, which is particularly beneficial for individuals with physical disabilities, like cerebral palsy,” she said. “The rhythm of the horse’s movements helps the rider’s muscles relax and develop a more natural stride.”

The therapeutic horseback riding lessons are structured to offer more than just physical benefits. They also provide emotional healing, often without the rider even realizing it.

“It’s not just about riding the horse,” Harder explained. “The goal is to have fun while getting therapy at the same time. The horses do much of the work, and it’s a great bonding experience for the riders.”

The program also works closely with local school districts, foster care programs, and adult care centers to provide services. Students and individuals from these organizations are encouraged to participate in therapeutic riding sessions, which are designed to meet the unique needs of each participant.

While the center has received significant community support, financial assistance and volunteers remain crucial to its continued success. Reins of Hope charges a minimal fee for its services and never turns away a rider due to financial constraints. Instead, the nonprofit relies on grants, donations, and volunteers to sustain its operations.

“We’ve been blessed by the community’s support over the years, but we still need help to continue our mission,” Harder said. “Funding and volunteers are our biggest needs right now. We’ve kept our rates the same since we began, but it’s a constant effort to maintain our program.”

Reins of Hope provides therapy to local community 

A coalition of Hutchinson-area churches is stepping in to support local students this fall through "Operation Backpack," a community-wide school supply initiative organized in partnership with First Call for Help.

The program is a shift from previous years, when churches participated in the annual Convoy of Hope event. Due to construction at the Kansas State Fairgrounds and other logistical challenges, the large-scale Convoy event could not be held this year. In response, Pastor Matt Stafford of First Congregational Church and other faith leaders redirected their efforts and resources to support First Call for Help’s “Operation Back to School” drive.

“This year, we’re calling it Operation Backpack,” Stafford said. “We still wanted to help our community, and this was a perfect way to do it.”

Monetary donations to Operation Backpack made by August 10 will be matched 100%, doubling their impact. Donations should be made out to First Call for Help and can be mailed or dropped off at their office at 17 W. Second Ave., Hutchinson, KS. Donors are encouraged to call ahead at 620-669-0159 to confirm office hours, which are typically Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The funds will be used to purchase quality backpacks and essential school supplies for students in USD 308 and surrounding districts. Distribution will take place by appointment only from August 11–14, with families needing to call First Call for Help to schedule a time.

Stafford noted that while past Convoy of Hope events included large-scale volunteer operations, much of the backpack assembly this year will be handled by Dillon’s employees through the company's volunteer program.

“We still want to help hundreds of families, just like we’ve done before,” Stafford said. “This is a chance for churches and businesses who were generous in the past to step up again—and have their contributions go twice as far.”

In previous years, Convoy of Hope in Hutchinson served more than 1,400 people, distributing over 1,000 backpacks and thousands of bags of groceries.

Stafford emphasized that this year’s effort is grounded in the churches’ mission of service.

“We’re not doing this to earn anything. We do this because of the grace and love of God that’s already been given to us,” he said. “It’s a practical way to help our neighbors and live out our faith.”

"Operation Backpack" aims to help Reno County students

Roger Eugene Syring, 77, of Alta Vista, KS, died July 30, 2025, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, in Kansas City, KS. He was born September 14, 1947, in Junction City, KS, to Wilmar E. and Hazel H. (Johnson) Syring.

Roger graduated from Alta Vista High School and attended Friends University in Wichita, KS. He worked as a civil servant in the Operations and Maintenance Division at Fort Riley for 30 years before retiring. Roger enjoyed reading, singing, fishing, and gardening, but most of all he loved attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sports, school, and church activities. Roger was a member of High View Church in Alta Vista and his love of Jesus led him to serve in many ministries, including the Encounter Ministry.

On November 6, 1971, he married Nedra E. Cramer, in Wichita. They shared nearly 54 years of marriage before his passing.

Roger is survived by: his wife, Nedra, of the home; daughters, Darcy Rhoades (Rion) of Hutchinson, KS, Brier Kormanik (Ben) of Alta Vista, KS, Morgan Tiffany (Shane) of Allen, KS, Talle Syring (Astin Haggerty) of Oklahoma City, OK; grandchildren, Sydney Winslow (Bryce), Trevor Rhoades, Jackson Rhoades, all of Hutchinson, Eli Kormanik, Jude Kormanik, Chloe Kormanik, Asher Kormanik, all of Alta Vista, Colton Tiffany (Harley), Grady Tiffany (Teagan), Josie Tiffany, all of Allen; great-granddaughter, Sarah Tiffany of Allen; and brother, Garold Syring (Deloris) of Washington, KS.

A private family graveside service will be held in East Templin Cemetery.
