🏀 KSHSAA state quarterfinal results from Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas State University President Richard Linton and Connected 'Cats Students visited Reno County this week. This is the second year of regional&nbsp; community visits for the college. More specifically, t<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/105/">he K-State 105.</a>

"K-State 105 is about taking the advantage of the networks we have and the relationships that we have with the extension and every single county and community in the state," Linton said. "And it's about business development, it's about economic growth and its about job creation and it's also about how do we build partnerships to able to make it attractive for industry and companies to want to build more in Kansas or want to come to Kansas to be able to build out their businesses."&nbsp;

Linton also emphasized the importance of visiting Kansas&nbsp; due to Kansas State's status as a land grant university. <a href="https://www.aplu.org/about-us/history-of-aplu/what-is-a-land-grant-university/">A land grant university</a> has been designated by its state's legislature or Congress to receive the benefits of the Morrill Acts of 1862 and 1890 or the Equity in Educational Land-Grant Status Act of 1994.&nbsp; The purpose of the Morrill Act is to teach tactics of a practical education which include agriculture, military tactics and mechanical arts.&nbsp;

<a href="https://k-state.com/about/kstatehistory.php#:~:text=On%20July%202%2C%201862%2C%20President,colleges%20in%20eligible%20U.S.%20territories.">Kansas State</a> became the first operational school created under the Morrill Act on Feb. 16 of 1863.

"The next generation land grant university is about really how can we create a land grant university as if we were doing it from scratch," Linton said. "Taking into account what we have done over the last 160 years, but thinking forward about what's going to be important for communities in the future."

The Connected 'Cats students for the Reno County tour were senior animal science and industry major Taylor Hedrick&nbsp; and senior biology student Kyser Meninger. Hedrick is a graduate of Pretty Prairie High School and Meninger graduated from Hutchinson High School.&nbsp; Hedrick and Meninger made a visit to StartUp Hutch on Tuesday, March 5. Linton joined the students on Tuesday, March 6 at Hutchinson Correctional Facility.&nbsp;

Linton said he learned about Hutch Correctional's master gardening program. More specifically, the program is called Garden for Good. Inmates are taught by Reno County Extension Master Gardener volunteers from K-State Research Extension office.

Linton said his visit to Hutchinson Correctional is one of the most inspiring visits he's had in the last two years of K-State 105. He said the master gardening program is more than just learning how to teach and be successful in gardening. It's about teaching life skills.

&nbsp;"I had an opportunity at the end of the program to be able to say I've now been to all 105 counties and communities and I don't know of a program that's more life changing than what I saw today," Linton said.&nbsp;

The community visit ended with an open forum on Wednesday, March 6 at the Kansas Cosmosphere where Hedrick and Meninger got to share about the impact Kansas State has had on their education and personal life. Hedrick and Meninger also had the opportunity to present the Connected Cats Spirit Award. The award recognizes teachers who made a positive impact on their lives. The recipients of the spirit award receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Hedrick chose to present Jon Johnson, Social Studies teacher at Pretty Prairie with the Connected Cats Spirit Award.&nbsp; Hedrick, whose dad is the principal at Pretty Prairie High School, said it was special to go back. Hedrick said Johnson plans to retire from teaching this year.&nbsp;

"So to be able to give back, to a teacher who had a big impact on me and encouraged me to go to K-State when none of my other classmates were going to a big four-year university," Hedrick said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Meninger chose to present the Connected Cats Spirit Award to Judy Goetz, an English teacher at Hutchinson High School.&nbsp;

"I picked her because I was a senior when COVID hit, so school had been canceled and she just did a really amazing job at trying to keep the students and her connected," Meninger said. "She reached out. Told us all what we needed to do homework wise. How to graduate on time still so she just really did an amazing job at that."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansas State also visited Jackson County and the surrounding region in February of this year. After their visit to Reno County this week, they traveled to Seward County and held an community open forum on Wednesday, March 6 in the evening.&nbsp;

Kansas State University president visits Reno County

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Come and learn about the Block by Block Investment program that's available to residents living in featured neighborhoods in Hutchinson.

The meeting is at Hutch Rec's Downtown office, 17 E. 1st Ave. from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7 and the meeting will discuss what types of projects qualify for reimbursement, who's eligible, and any questions you may have about the program. 

There will also be applications on-hand if you'd like to apply for the program.

Meeting for featured neighborhood 'Block by Block' program tonight

Gerald R. “Jerry” Kershaw died Sunday, March 3, 2024.&nbsp;

Jerry’s life passion was sports, especially basketball, football, and baseball. In 1961, he put his passion to use by becoming one of the voices of the Hutchinson High School Salthawks and the Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons, providing color analysis for all football and basketball games alongside Bob Watson on KWBW Radio. He had a remarkable memory for sports facts and this gained him many fans. He eventually took over the play-by-play duties. He took special pride in being the voice of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament held every year in March in Hutchinson. He spent many years working with the American Legion to put the tournament together and was responsible for the committee overseeing the tournament program. He continued helping with the program via email and phone until his death. He was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Blue Dragon Hall of Fame in 2015. He was also honored on his 50th year of tournament broadcasting with the prestigious NJCAA Appreciation Award in 2014. He continued to return to Hutchinson every March to be a part of the tournament broadcasting crew after moving to Norman until 2016.&nbsp;

The family will be present to receive friends from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at the Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman, Oklahoma. Memorial Services will begin at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, 419 S.University Blvd. in Norman.

Voice of Blue Dragons and NJCAA, Jerry Kershaw, dead at 93

Jerry, 93, of Norman, Oklahoma passed away Sunday, March 3, 2024. He was born March 5, 1930, in Albert Lea, Minnesota to Rudyard Kershaw and Grace (Kennelly) Kershaw Barick.

He grew up in Stronghurst, Illinois and graduated from Stronghurst High School in 1948. He was raised by his grandparents, Andrew and Sarah Kershaw, and by a special uncle, Fred Kershaw.

He met Betty (Elizabeth) Boyce in 1948 while they were both working for the Santa Fe Railroad in Stronghurst, Illinois. They fell in love and were married on September 3, 1950 in Galesburg, Kansas. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and served proudly in Iceland and Fort Worth, Texas, from 1951-1955. Their first child, Karen, was born in 1954, and a son, Michael came along in 1956. By this time, they were living in Emporia, Kansas. Jerry worked for the MK&amp;T Railroad there but was eager to put the air traffic controller skills he learned in the Air Force to use. He was hired by the FAA as an air traffic controller in 1959 at the airport in Hutchinson, Kansas. He retired from the FAA in 1989 and went to work as the Director of the Hutchinson Community College Endowment Association. Upon his retirement from there in 1995, he and Betty relocated to Norman, Oklahoma, to be near their daughter and grandson, Tyler, who was born in 1985. Tyler was the apple of his grandfather’s eye and he loved watching him play sports all through childhood and especially cherished watching him play high school basketball.

Once he moved to Norman, he became an avid football and basketball OU fan and had season tickets for many years. He loved attending practices and getting to know the coaches and players.

Jerry was a member of the OU Tip-In Club and McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and Uncle Fred; and his son, Michael. Jerry is survived by his wife, of the home, his daughter Karen Canfield and husband, Larry, of Blanchard; his grandson Tyler Smith and wife, Tiffeny, of Oklahoma City, and a great-granddaughter, Scottie, who will arrive in June, 2024.

The family will be present to receive friends from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at the Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman. Memorial Services will begin at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, 419 S.University Blvd. in Norman.

 </figure>Jerry, 93, of Norman, Oklahoma passed away Sunday, March 3, 2024. He was born March 5, 1930, in Albert Lea, Minnesota to Rudyard Kershaw and Grace (Kennelly) Kershaw Barick.He grew up in Stronghurst, Illinois and graduated from Stronghurst High School in 1948. He was raised by his grandparents, Andrew and Sarah Kershaw, and by a special uncle, Fred Kershaw.He met Betty (Elizabeth) Boyce in 1948 while they were both working for the Santa Fe Railroad in Stronghurst, Illinois. They fell in love and were married on September 3, 1950 in Galesburg, Kansas. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and served proudly in Iceland and Fort Worth, Texas, from 1951-1955. Their first child, Karen, was born in 1954, and a son, Michael came along in 1956. By this time, they were living in Emporia, Kansas. Jerry worked for the MK&amp;T Railroad there but was eager to put the air traffic controller skills he learned in the Air Force to use. He was hired by the FAA as an air traffic controller in 1959 at the airport in Hutchinson, Kansas. He retired from the FAA in 1989 and went to work as the Director of the Hutchinson Community College Endowment Association. Upon his retirement from there in 1995, he and Betty relocated to Norman, Oklahoma, to be near their daughter and grandson, Tyler, who was born in 1985. Tyler was the apple of his grandfather’s eye and he loved watching him play sports all through childhood and especially cherished watching him play high school basketball.Jerry’s life passion was sports, especially basketball, football, and baseball. In 1961, he put his passion to use by becoming one of the voices of the Hutchinson High School Salthawks and the Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons, providing color analysis for all football and basketball games alongside Bob Watson on KWBW Radio. He had a remarkable memory for sports facts and this gained him many fans. He eventually took over the play-by-play duties. He took special pride in being the voice of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament held every year in March in Hutchinson. He spent many years working with the American Legion to put the tournament together and was responsible for the committee overseeing the tournament program. He continued helping with the program via email and phone until his death. He was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Blue Dragon Hall of Fame in 2009. He was also honored on his 50th year of tournament broadcasting with the prestigious NJCAA Appreciation Award in 2014. He continued to return to Hutchinson every March to be a part of the tournament broadcasting crew after moving to Norman until 2016. Once he moved to Norman, he became an avid football and basketball OU fan and had season tickets for many years. He loved attending practices and getting to know the coaches and players.Jerry was a member of the OU Tip-In Club and McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church.He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and Uncle Fred; and his son, Michael. Jerry is survived by his wife, of the home, his daughter Karen Canfield and husband, Larry, of Blanchard; his grandson Tyler Smith and wife, Tiffeny, of Oklahoma City, and a great-granddaughter, Scottie, who will arrive in June, 2024.The family will be present to receive friends from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at the Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman. GARDEN CITY, Kan. — Dadrevius "Dre" Weathers scored 25 of his game-high 27 points in the second half to help the No. 16-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team to a 96-78 win in the regular season finale on Wednesday at Conestoga Arena.

Hutchinson finishes the regular season 25-5 overall, 20-4 in the Jayhawk Conference.

The Blue Dragons and Broncbusters saw seven ties and 10 different lead changes in the first half. Garden City (18-12, 14-10) took the 39-37 lead into the halftime break.

Hutchinson flipped the switch in the second half and came out strong and firing on all cylinders. The Blue Dragons shot 62 percent (23-of-37) from the floor in the second half after shooting 40 percent (13-of-32) in the first half.

The Blue Dragons took advantage of many open looks, plus took care of the basketball, turning it over just twice in the second half and eight times total for the game.

Valentino Simon also helped spark the second half comeback, scoring 12 of his 15 points in the second. J.P. Ricks finished the game with 18 points, three rebounds, nine assists, three steals and most importantly no turnovers at the point guard position.

Garden City head coach Rusty Elmore picked up two technical fouls and was ejected with 9:59 remaining, as Hutch held a 68-64 lead. The Blue Dragons turned that into a five-point possession. Hutchinson never looked back from that point on and built a 21-point lead in the second half.

Hutchinson outscored the Broncbusters in the second half, 59-39.

The Broncbusters were led by Brody Robinson with 25 points and 10 assists, while Braxton Jones added 19 points.

Hutchinson is the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Region VI tournament and will host a quarterfinal game on Tuesday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sports Arena. The opponent is to be determined, depending on the results from the first round games on Saturday.

GARDEN CITY, Kan. — The No. 1 Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team joined rare company on Wednesday following a 74-64 win at Garden City.

The Blue Dragons finished the regular season unbeaten at 30-0 overall, 24-0 in Jayhawk Conference play. This marks the fourth time in program history that HutchCC has finished a regular season unbeaten. The 2023-24 team joins the list of 1977, 2012 and 2014 teams to accomplish the feat.

Hutchinson and Garden City (16-13, 11-13) shared leads back and forth in the opening quarter before Hailey Jackson buried a 3-pointer to give the Blue Dragons a 14-11 lead after one.

The Blue Dragons built a five point lead in the second quarter before Garden City answered with a 9-0 run to go in front 20-16. The Blue Dragons countered with a 13-2 run to go into the halftime break in front, 29-22.

Both teams continued to go back and forth in the third quarter. Hutchinson knocked down four 3-pointers in the quarter, three of which belonged to Kiki Smith. The Blue Dragons also knocked down 7-of-8 free throws to lead 52-44.

Smith hit her sixth 3-pointer of the night at the 4:20 mark in the final frame to give the Blue Dragons its largest lead of the night, 71-52. Hutchinson made substitutions shortly thereafter, which allowed Garden City to pull within single digits, but never closer than nine.

Smith led the way for the Blue Dragons with a game-high 28 points in the win. Hailey Jackson added 19 points, going 9-of-10 from the foul stripe. Journey Armstead finished with six points, six rebounds, nine assists and three steals.

The Blue Dragons knocked down 22-of-28 free throw attempts, while also knocking down 10 3-pointers in the win.&nbsp;

Garden City was paced by Maya Nieto with 16 points off the bench, while Antonicia Moultrie posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

HutchCC is off until Tuesday, March 12, a Region VI quarterfinal game that will be played in the Sports Arena at 5:30 p.m. The opponent is to be determined, with the Region VI tournament officially getting underway with first round games on Saturday.

The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team goes after a 25th regular-season victory and a 20th Jayhawk Conference victory on Wednesday as the Blue Dragons travel to play the Garden City Broncbusters in the final game of the 2023-24 regular season.

The No. 16-ranked Blue Dragons (24-5, 19-4 Jayhawk Conference) and sixth-place Broncbusters (18-11, 14-9 Jayhawk Conference) tip off at 7:30 p.m. at Conestoga Arena in Garden City.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 7:15 p.m. with Sean Boston (play-by-play) calling the action. The Blue Dragon Sports Network will stream the game live at free beginning at 7:15 p.m.

Heading into the final game of the regular season, the Blue Dragons are locked into the No. 3 seed for the Region VI Tournament, which begins Saturday at sites around the state of Kansas. A Hutchinson win and a Cowley loss to Butler on Wednesday would give the Blue Dragons a tie for second place in the Jayhawk Conference with the Tigers

Hutchinson was picked to finish sixth in the KJCCC this season - but Cowley owns a tiebreaker over the Dragons for the No. 2 regional seed.

Garden City could tie Cloud County for fifth place in the KJCCC, but is locked into the sixth seed for the Region VI Tournament after losing a tiebreaker with the Thunderbirds.

Hutchinson looks to enter the postseason on a high note after falling 91-78 to No. 1-ranked Barton on Saturday in Great Bend. Playing without leading scorer Kamryn Thomas, the Blue Dragons shot 50 percent against the Cougars, but Barton had two key second-half runs to pull away in the second half. Valentino Simon had his 30th career double-double (11th as a Blue Dragon) with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Garden City has won 3 of its last 4 games after Saturday’s 86-75 home victory over Dodge City. Brody Robinson, who is No. 2 in the NJCAA in assists, had 33 points, eight rebounds and seven assists to lead the Busters. Braxton Jones hit four 3-pointers and finished with 24 points.

The Dragons won the first meeting with Garden City this season, topping the Busters 85-64 on January 20. Thomas led Hutchinson with 22 points, hitting 4 of 6 from 3-point range. Kernan Bundy added 15 points off the bench. The Blue Dragons shot 47.7 percent from the floor. The Busters were held to 35.6 percent shooting and Robinson was held to five points and two assists. Jones had 23 points to pace the Busters.

Hutchinson’s next action will be the Region VI Quarterfinals on March 12 at the Sports Arena

The Jayhawk Conference champion Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team looks to complete its fourth perfect regular season on Wednesday night as the Blue Dragons close out the regular season with a road trip to play the Garden City Broncbusters.

The No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons (29-0, 23-0 Jayhawk Conference) and the Broncbusters (16-12, 11-12 Jayhawk Conference) will tip off at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Conestoga Arena in Garden City.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 5:15 p.m. with Sean Boston (play-by-play) calling the action. The Blue Dragon Sports Network will stream the game live and free beginning at 5:15 p.m.

The 2024 Blue Dragons look to match the 1977, 2012 and 2014 teams who completed a regular season undefeated.

The current Blue Dragons won its 29th consecutive game after a 57-39 victory on Saturday at Barton. The Dragons rallied from nine points down late in the first quarter for its 27th victory in double figures in 29 games. Kiki Smith led the Blue Dragons with 14 points. Monae Duffy finished with 11 points.

The Blue Dragons trailed 12-5 after the first quarter, marking the fourth-consecutive game they have trailed after 10 minutes. The Blue Dragons are now 8-0 when trailing after the first quarter, mainly because the they have outscored their opponents by 323 points.

Garden City bids for a second-straight victory over a ranked opponent. Last Saturday, the Broncbusters upset No. 14 Dodge City 55-53 at Conestoga Arena. The Busters got 18 points off the bench from Maya Nieto and Ana Ramos Pires had 14 points.

The Busters have a lot on the line on Wednesday. The Busters are one of four teams battling for the sixth, seventh and eighth seeds and home games in the opening round in the Region VI Tournament, which begins Saturday at home sites around the state.

The Blue Dragons will go after a 13th-consecutive victory over Garden City. Hutchinson defeated Garden City 73-56 on January 20 at the Sports Arena. Duffy led the Blue Dragons with 17 points and Smith had 16 points to lead the Blue Dragons. Stevi Yanci led the Busters with 11 points.

🏀 WBB: Blue Dragons seek fourth unbeaten regular season at Garden City

ENID, Oklahoma – The Northern Oklahoma-Enid Jets hit a pair of home runs and pounded out 14 hits to snap the Hutchinson Community College baseball team’s four-game win streak on Tuesday at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.

After tying the game at 4-all, the Blue Dragons weren’t able to sustain their momentum and fell to NOC-Enid 12-7 in a non-conference midweek match.

The Blue Dragons are now 12-4 overall and will open Jayhawk West play at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Hobart-Detter Field. The Hutchinson-Garden City conference opener was moved up a day because or forecasted inclement weather on Thursday.

Trailing 4-0 after three innings on Tuesday, Tyson Vassart hit a two-run home run to right field in the fourth inning to get the Dragons on the board. Hutchinson tied the game at 4-all in the fifth when Cody Gunderson hit a two-run home run to center.

NOC-Enid immediately answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth as the Jets scored eight unanswered runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

Hank Griffin hit a three-run double in the top of the ninth to round out the Blue Dragons’ scoring.

The Blue Dragons pounded out 10 hits on Tuesday.

Gunderson was 2 for 3 with a double, home run, two RBIs and three runs scored. Vassart was 2 for 5 with a double, his first home run of the season and two RBIs. Jarrett Herrman also had two hits with a pair of singles in four at-bats.

Seven different Blue Dragons pitchers were used on Tuesday. Nic Perez (0-1) was tagged with the loss. Blue Dragon pitching combined for eight strikeouts.

⚾ Blue Dragons fall at NOC-Enid

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On Tuesday, March 5th, Buhler USD 313, Simpson Construction Services, and Landmark Architects proudly announced the commencement of renovations for their future Crusader Corner Daycare and Ad Astra Academies facilities. This milestone project represents a significant step forward in addressing the critical need for childcare in our community while also enhancing educational opportunities for young learners.

As part of the Reno County Childcare Task Force initiative, Buhler Schools has secured the prestigious Accelerator and Innovation Grant, amounting to nearly $600,000. This grant is dedicated to renovating spaces at Buhler Grade School and a purchased property located at 56th and Plum. In accordance with grant requirements, local entities are tasked with raising a percentage of matching funds. The Buhler Education Foundation, in close partnership with USD 313, has undertaken the commitment to raise $150,000 in matching funds. Community members and supporters are encouraged to contribute by donating online today at <a href="http://usd313.org">usd313.org</a>.

The renovated facilities will offer a combined total of 78 slots for children from birth to 3 years old, distributed between the two locations. These renovations and expansion in childcare services reflects Buhler Schools' dedication to serving their staff, families, and the broader community.

"We are thrilled to embark on this transformative journey alongside Simpson Construction Services and Landmark Architects," stated Cindy Couchman, Superintendent of Buhler USD 313. "By expanding our daycare services and renovating the Ad Astra Academies, we are not only helping meet the immediate needs of our district staff and community, but also laying the groundwork for a brighter future for our students."

The demand for quality childcare continues to grow, and Buhler Schools are proud to play a pivotal role in addressing this pressing issue. Through collaborative efforts and community support, the future Crusader Corner Daycare and Ad Astra Academies facility and the renovations to Buhler Elementary will help provide a nurturing environment where children can thrive and flourish.

Additionally, improvements will be made to the USD 313 Ad Astra Academies building. The Ad Astra Virtual Academy was established in 2021 and has quickly grown to include more than 150 students and spawned an alternative school, Ad Astra Alternative Academy, necessitating the need for additional and dedicated space for these students and staff. The mission of the Ad Astra Virtual Academy is to provide an exceptional, innovative, technology-based education that prepares students for colleges, careers, and the global community.

🏀 KSHSAA schedule for Wednesday state quarterfinals

M. Yvonne Mammel McConnell Josephson, 97, died March 2, 2024, at Thorne Care Center, Hutchinson. &nbsp;She was born April 10, 1926, in Belpre, KS, to Norman J. and Olga L. (Lindgren) Mammel.

Yvonne graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1944, and Adela Hale Business College. &nbsp;She worked as a bookkeeper for various banks and later in her career, managed Garden Grove Apartments. &nbsp;Yvonne was an experienced shopper, but her greatest accomplishment was her two daughters. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hutchinson.

In September 1943, she married Kenneth E. McConnell. &nbsp;Their marriage ended in divorce. &nbsp;On August 15, 1963, she married Jack L. Josephson, in Hutchinson. &nbsp;He died September 25, 2009, after they shared 46 years or marriage.&nbsp;

Yvonne is survived by: &nbsp;daughter, Sandra K. “Sandy” Zwick (Gary) of Sterling; stepsons, Jerry Josephson (Vicki) of Hutchinson and Jeff Josephson (Doris) of Olathe; six grandchildren, Michelle, Barbie, Brecken, Zach, Chelsey, and Cody; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: &nbsp;her parents; sister, Eloise Hawver, daughter, Nancy McConnell; and granddaughter, Megan Josephson.

(Lindgren) Mammel.Yvonne graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1944, and Adela Hale Business College. &nbsp;She worked as a bookkeeper for various banks and later in her career, managed Garden Grove Apartments. &nbsp;Yvonne was an experienced shopper, but her greatest accomplishment was her two daughters. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hutchinson.In September 1943, she married Kenneth E. McConnell. &nbsp;Their marriage ended in divorce. &nbsp;On August 15, 1963, she married Jack L. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A day filled with free gardening information for homeowners and gardeners will take place March 9. The Hutchinson Horticulture Club organizes and sponsors this event as their educational project for the community. It will be held at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church at 407 East 12th, just west of the Cosmosphere. After missing two years because of COVID, the club held the event last year. If not for the COVID years, this would be the 35th year for the annual event.

"We follow the schedule, that's on our <a href="https://www.facebook.com/hutchinsonhorticultureclub">Facebook page, the Hutchinson Horticulture Club</a>," said Betty Taylor with the club. You can come and go to whatever topics you want."

Doors open at 8:30 a.m. with the morning session beginning at 9:00 a.m. 

The first topic is Herbs-Growing, Using and Abusing by Kay Neff of Neff Family Farm located outside Sedgwick. She has been growing herbs for 35 years. Her program will include growing tips for several common herbs and she'll give suggestions and some recipes for using them. 

Next, at 10:00 a.m., the topic Fall Gardening-Extend your Gardening Season will be presented by James Taylor, Retired Instructor at Hutchinson Community College. His program will highlight vegetables and some flowers that do really well in cooler fall weather. He'll provide a planting schedule and planting tips so gardeners can enjoy fresh produce after others have quit for the year.

"Somebody might say, why in the heck are you talking about fall gardening in the spring?" James Taylor said. "The reason is that there are some things that you might need to get to prepare for it. Now is the time to be making the order for shade cloth or special seeds. Also, you need to arrange your garden so that you'll have space."

The last presentation for the morning will begin at 11:00 a.m. Jarrod Bornholdt, of Bornholdt Plantland, has arranged for Eric George, a Monrovia Sales Representative from Paola, to present New &amp; Newer Perennials, Shrub Roses &amp; Other Shrubs. He will have suggestions for sunny and shady spots in your yard that might make your friends jealous.

The afternoon programs will resume at 1:00 p.m. with Krista Dahlinger from Mulvane, an officer of the Kansas Native Plant Society, addressing the topic of Less Lawn-More Habitat. She will present ideas on how low growing native plants can reduce watering and create a pollinator paradise in your yard. She will share lots of 'how to' resources. 

At 2:00 p.m., Rob Mortko, of Made in the Shade Gardens in Olathe, will speak about Hostas: Everything You Want to Know About America's Most Popular Perennial. He is a nationally recognized Hosta expert and is known as 'The Hosta Guy'. He has been a Hosta&nbsp;aficionado for over 35 years. 

The last presentation of the day begins at 3:00 p.m. The topic of Success in Making Colorful Containers will be covered by Jason French, Retail Manager and Plant Specialist at Stutzmans Greenhouse. He will talk about containers, soil, fertilizer and have a handout listing recommended combinations of plants to use in containers in sun and shade locations.

There will be no charge to attend any of the Gathering for Gardeners programs, although registration at the door is requested.

"I like to know how many people come and where they come from," Betty Taylor said. "We've had over 30 cities represented at our gathering for gardeners and some years we've had over 300 people attend. You only need to register once."

Door prize drawings will be held throughout the day.&nbsp;

Hutchinson is currently 24-5 overall, 19-4 in Jayhawk Conference play. The Blue Dragons close out the regular season on Wednesday at Garden City for a 7:30 p.m. tip.

The Blue Dragons have already locked up the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Region VI Tournament. The No. 3 seed guarantees a first round bye, and a quarterfinal game at the Sports Arena on Tuesday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m.

Hutchinson is one of four Jayhawk Conference schools in the Top 25. Barton stays put at No. 1 for the second straight week, while Cowley (No. 11), Hutch and Butler (No. 24) all stay in the rankings.

🏀 KSHSAA state championship schedule

The shows include a retrospective by Hutchinson painter Don Fullmer; paintings by Patricia Scarborough of Geneva, Nebraska; mobiles by Scott Brown of Hutchinson; and&nbsp;New to Us: Recent Acquisitions to the Sandzén Gallery's Permanent Collection.

The Midwest Art Exhibition was founded in 1899 by three local Lindsborg artists – Birger Sandzén, Carl Lotave, and G. N. Malm – as a complement to the annual Messiah Festival&nbsp;held at Bethany College. Today, it represents the longest running annual art exhibition in Kansas and&nbsp;primarily features works by artists invited by the Sandzén Gallery or from the Gallery's permanent collection.

Hutchinson, Kansas native Don Fullmer is a painter whose works are the creative culmination of a lifelong quest and desire for knowledge. Fullmer's education includes a 1974 B.F.A. from the University of Kansas, as well as a 1976 M.A. and 1977 M.F.A. in painting from the University of Iowa. He has used this formal training as a starting point to create a long career as a working painter.

Scott Brown also hails from Hutchinson and is a former art instructor at Hutchinson Community College. Through that group, they have organized an annual print portfolio with other regional artists. They currently operate Arkanoe, a kayak, canoe, and tube rental and shuttle service serving the Arkansas River in Reno County, Kansas.

For the current exhibition, Brown will be showing mobiles made from reclaimed prints and positioned on jars recovered from the Arkansas River.&nbsp;

The final exhibition features recent additions to the Sandzén Gallery's permanent collection and includes art by pen maker David Oscarson; painters Alba Malm, Elizabeth Liljegren, John Blake Bergers, Raymond Jonson, Hannah Swensson, Thomas Klocke, Anna Keener, Steve Scott; ceramists Ray Kahmeyer, John Kudlacek, Carol Long, Steven Hill; and more.

The shows include a retrospective by Hutchinson painter Don Fullmer; paintings by Patricia Scarborough of Geneva, Nebraska; mobiles by Scott Brown of Hutchinson; and&nbsp;New to Us: Recent Acquisitions to the Sandzén Gallery's Permanent Collection.The Midwest Art Exhibition was founded in 1899 by three local Lindsborg artists – Birger Sandzén, Carl Lotave, and G. N. Malm – as a complement to the annual Messiah Festival&nbsp;held at Bethany College. Today, it represents the longest running annual art exhibition in Kansas and&nbsp;primarily features works by artists invited by the Sandzén Gallery or from the Gallery's permanent collection.Hutchinson, Kansas native Don Fullmer is a painter whose works are the creative culmination of a lifelong quest and desire for knowledge. Fullmer's education includes a 1974 B.F.A. from the University of Kansas, as well as a 1976 M.A. and 1977 M.F.A. in painting from the University of Iowa. Through that group, they have organized an annual print portfolio with other regional artists.
