The Jayhawk Conference champion Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team looks to complete its fourth perfect regular season on Wednesday night as the Blue Dragons close out the regular season with a road trip to play the Garden City Broncbusters.
The No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons (29-0, 23-0 Jayhawk Conference) and the Broncbusters (16-12, 11-12 Jayhawk Conference) will tip off at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Conestoga Arena in Garden City.
The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 5:15 p.m. with Sean Boston (play-by-play) calling the action. The Blue Dragon Sports Network will stream the game live and free beginning at 5:15 p.m.
The 2024 Blue Dragons look to match the 1977, 2012 and 2014 teams who completed a regular season undefeated.
The current Blue Dragons won its 29th consecutive game after a 57-39 victory on Saturday at Barton. The Dragons rallied from nine points down late in the first quarter for its 27th victory in double figures in 29 games. Kiki Smith led the Blue Dragons with 14 points. Monae Duffy finished with 11 points.
The Blue Dragons trailed 12-5 after the first quarter, marking the fourth-consecutive game they have trailed after 10 minutes. The Blue Dragons are now 8-0 when trailing after the first quarter, mainly because the they have outscored their opponents by 323 points.
Garden City bids for a second-straight victory over a ranked opponent. Last Saturday, the Broncbusters upset No. 14 Dodge City 55-53 at Conestoga Arena. The Busters got 18 points off the bench from Maya Nieto and Ana Ramos Pires had 14 points.
The Busters have a lot on the line on Wednesday. The Busters are one of four teams battling for the sixth, seventh and eighth seeds and home games in the opening round in the Region VI Tournament, which begins Saturday at home sites around the state.
The Blue Dragons will go after a 13th-consecutive victory over Garden City. Hutchinson defeated Garden City 73-56 on January 20 at the Sports Arena. Duffy led the Blue Dragons with 17 points and Smith had 16 points to lead the Blue Dragons. Stevi Yanci led the Busters with 11 points.
