HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College athletic department announced it will host a celebration for the Blue Dragon women's basketball team on Tuesday, April 9 at the Sports Arena.

The celebration will take place from 6-8 p.m. and will allow the public to take photos with the student-athletes and coaching staff, as well as get autographs and hear speeches.

HutchCC capped off an unbeaten season, 37-0 on Monday evening with a <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/03303cb3-2957-412e-92a1-33edbc221ecf">national championship win over Northwest Florida State, 88-80.</a>

The win gave the Blue Dragons it's first-ever national title in program history.

Rickie D. Redeker, 74, died March 31, 2024, at his residence in Hutchinson, KS. He was born October 11, 1949, in Red Cloud, NE, to Arnulf C. and Mabel E. (Rickard) Redeker.

Rickie graduated from Red Cloud High School in 1968, and attended Hastings College, Hastings, NE. He served in the United States Navy and the United States Army for four years each, totaling in eight years of service. He worked as a road and bridge surveyor for the City of Lincoln. He enjoyed reading, attending church, and collecting knives and guns.

Rickie attended CrossPoint Church in Hutchinson, KS, and Red Cloud Assembly of God Church, Red Cloud, NE.

Rickie is survived by: brothers, Greg (Donnajean) Redeker of Mesa, AZ, Rod (Donna) Redeker of Youngstown, OH; sisters, Zona (Ray) Hines of Lindsborg, KS, Diana Bumgardner and Shellie Cornwall both of Lincoln, NE; sister in-law, Donna Redeker; nieces and nephews, Shane Hines, Shawndel Buckner, Chancy Cornwall, Josh Cornwall, Geoffrey Redeker, Ashley Landers, Landon Redeker, and Amy Davies.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; brothers, Ronnie Redeker, Rollie Redeker, Richie Redeker, Craig Redecker; and a sister, Trudie Tuengal.

Graveside service will take place at a later date in Red Cloud Cemetery, Red Cloud, NE. Cremation has taken place

Donald Lee Patrick, 88, a lifetime McPherson County resident, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, surrounded by family at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.

Don was born on June 12, 1935, in Marquette, KS, the son of Gustaf Arthur Emmanuel and Alyce Dorothy (Peterson) Patrick.&nbsp; He graduated from Marquette High School and later attended Hutchinson Community College. On August 2, 1958, Don was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Becker in Lindsborg, KS.&nbsp;

He served in the Army National Guard and worked as an auto mechanic at the local Ford dealership and for the McPherson Street Department.&nbsp; He was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church, McPherson.

Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Ellen Patrick; two daughters, Pam (Barry) Pjesky and Darla (Tracy) Presnell, all of McPherson, KS; two sisters, Norma Jean Holm (Eyler Anderson) of Marquette, KS and Deanna (Ray) Applequist of Falun, KS; four grandchildren, Bryce Pjesky, James (Susan) Presnell, Aaron (Jamie) Pjesky, and Tyler (Susana) Pjesky; seven great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant children, Daryl Lee Patrick and Maria Jane Patrick.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Friday, April 12, 2024, at Stockham Family Funeral Home.&nbsp; The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 13, at Stockham Family Funeral Home.&nbsp; Burial with Military Honors will follow at McPherson Cemetery.

Job Fair at Sports Arena Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— At a retirement ceremony for HutchCC President Dr. Carter File this week, his predecessor Ed Berger said leadership is about knowing when to take a step back. File took Berger's place in the presidency in July of 2014.&nbsp;

"My succession plans were certainly looking at Carter coming in and picking up the reins where we left off," Berger said at the retirement reception. "It was great to have that opportunity."&nbsp;

File's retirement ceremony was held on Tuesday, April 2 at Stringer Fine Arts Center.&nbsp;

"Mostly I was just honored by the turnout and some of the kind words that people had to say about me," File said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

File will retire from HutchCC effective Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024. He has a more than 24-year career in higher education. File was the college's Vice President of Operations and Finance from 2005-2014.&nbsp;

"When our dean of finance retired, Bill Warner, we knew we wanted to replace Bill with somebody as strong as Bill was," Berger said. "We wanted to replace him with somebody that had great experience as the dean of finance. And so we looked across the community college spectrum and there was one person that really stood out. An individual who was well respected by his colleagues, well respected by other community college presidents, and that was Carter File."&nbsp;

File said he and his wife Tracey have thoughts of moving to the Tampa, Florida area after retirement to be closer to family. However, the move would not be immediate. File said retirement is a bittersweet feeling because he knows he and his wife would be leaving good friends behind if they decide to move.

&nbsp;"We've always just kind of lived our lives as the next adventure, the next thing up," File said. "If we do move to Tampa, we'll look for something to do down there that will keep us busy."

The college announced on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023 that File submitted his request to the college board of trustees indicating his intent to retire.&nbsp;

"I hope that people look at what we did here at the college during my time as Vice-President of Finance and Operations and President as time where we really provided opportunities for students," File said. "Whether they were our students in the classroom, whether they are students in activities like band or, you know, jazz band or choir, whether they were our Ag (agriculture) judging students, whether they were our&nbsp; athletes."

Plans being made for new downtown park

Mark Blakeslee, 69, died in his home on Monday April 1st, 2024 after a valiant fight with cancer.&nbsp;

Born John Marcus Blakeslee on Sunday June 13th, 1954 in the town of Rawlins Wyoming. His childhood was spent playing with his best friend Bruce Hootman. He graduated from Rawlins High School in 1972, forever proud of being an Outlaw.&nbsp;

He continued his education at Hastings College where played his trumpet purchased by his grandma Esther in the band and travelled the world. After earning his Bachelor’s degree, he continued his education at the University of Nebraska Omaha.&nbsp;

While living in Omaha he fell in love with Denise Hartline and they married on February 14th, 1979. The marriage was exposed to great obstacles that challenged their constitution and faith. Their 45 years together brought four children; Pete, Corrine, Cassie, and Whitney.&nbsp;

He was a masterful salesman and shoed the entire town of Dodge City working as the manager of Payless from 1986 to 1994. Mark was able to return to his passion of helping peoples when his friend Mike Hoar hired him at Youthville. He graduated from Friend’s University with his master’s degree and became a Marriage and Family Therapist. He never stopped furthering his education so he could expand his therapeutic repertoire that included hypnosis and addiction counseling. When he moved to Nickerson, he gradually switched from helping youth to counseling adults.&nbsp;

Mark volunteered his limited spare time to Hasting’s College Band and Kiwanis. What started out with him filling in as Santa turned into one of his favorite hobbies. He loved playing the Ho HO especially when it included his daughter Whitney being his trusty Elf sidekick. He was everyone’s favorite Mall Santa at Village Square Mall from 1995-2008. Santa then booked the occasional appearances that included the Nickerson Snowflake Festival, United Methodist Church, and Berridge’s IGA.&nbsp;

As driven as Mark was to help others his pride was his family. He was his family’s rock, best friend, role model, and biggest fan. He loved tapping his foot along to songs in band concerts, playing catch in the field, and cheering them in everything they did.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife Denise and his children Pete/Tricia Sioux City, Iowa, Corrine/Ben Nickerson, Kansas, Whitney/Donnie Inman Kansas. His mother Marjorie Hutchinson Kansas, his sister Julia/Steve Gaithersburg, Maryland.  </figure>Mark Blakeslee, 69, died in his home on Monday April 1st, 2024 after a valiant fight with cancer.&nbsp;Born John Marcus Blakeslee on Sunday June 13th, 1954 in the town of Rawlins Wyoming. His childhood was spent playing with his best friend Bruce Hootman. He graduated from Rawlins High School in 1972, forever proud of being an Outlaw.&nbsp;He continued his education at Hastings College where played his trumpet purchased by his grandma Esther in the band and travelled the world. After earning his Bachelor’s degree, he continued his education at the University of Nebraska Omaha.&nbsp;While living in Omaha he fell in love with Denise Hartline and they married on February 14th, 1979. The marriage was exposed to great obstacles that challenged their constitution and faith. Their 45 years together brought four children; Pete, Corrine, Cassie, and Whitney.&nbsp;He was a masterful salesman and shoed the entire town of Dodge City working as the manager of Payless from 1986 to 1994. Mark was able to return to his passion of helping peoples when his friend Mike Hoar hired him at Youthville. He graduated from Friend’s University with his master’s degree and became a Marriage and Family Therapist. He never stopped furthering his education so he could expand his therapeutic repertoire that included hypnosis and addiction counseling. When he moved to Nickerson, he gradually switched from helping youth to counseling adults.&nbsp;Mark volunteered his limited spare time to Hasting’s College Band and Kiwanis. What started out with him filling in as Santa turned into one of his favorite hobbies. He loved playing the Ho HO especially when it included his daughter Whitney being his trusty Elf sidekick. He was everyone’s favorite Mall Santa at Village Square Mall from 1995-2008. Santa then booked the occasional appearances that included the Nickerson Snowflake Festival, United Methodist Church, and Berridge’s IGA.&nbsp;As driven as Mark was to help others his pride was his family. He was his family’s rock, best friend, role model, and biggest fan. He loved tapping his foot along to songs in band concerts, playing catch in the field, and cheering them in everything they did.&nbsp;He is survived by his wife Denise and his children Pete/Tricia Sioux City, Iowa, Corrine/Ben Nickerson, Kansas, Whitney/Donnie Inman Kansas. His mother Marjorie Hutchinson Kansas, his sister Julia/Steve Gaithersburg, Maryland. Ardith May, 79, of South Hutchinson, died March 30, 2024, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born August 30, 1944, in Hutchinson, to Bernard and Arlie (Taylor) Hiebert.

Ardith graduated from Nickerson High School in 1962 and attended Hutchinson Community College

She spent many years living in Grand Island, Nebraska, with her husband, Wayne. She made many great memories there and was very involved in her community. Ardith worked as a legal secretary at a law office. She was a charter member of Grand Island Legal Professionals Association, Crimestoppers of Grand Island and Grand Island Fleet of Admirals Club. Ardith was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Island and Emanuel Lutheran Church when she returned to Hutchinson. She was a very crafty person; she enjoyed painting and selling her plaster crafts.

In November 1977, Ardith married Wayne E. May in Grand Island. He passed away in March 2005.

She is survived by: son, Jack Morton Jr, Wichita; sister, Glennys Tedder, Hutchinson; brother, Ralph Hiebert (Toni); and many close cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Ardith was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wayne; brother, Paul Hiebert; sisters, Betty Greever, Vera Ummel, and Phyllis Balzer.

Memorial service will be 1:30 pm Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Elliott Mortuary. A private burial will take place at a later time in Fairlawn Burial Park. Friends may sign the book 9 am to 5 pm Wednesday through Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

Joyce Darlene Hartman, 86, of rural Nickerson, died April 1, 2024, at her home. She was born April 26, 1937, in Hutchinson, to Darlton and Pauline (Cook) Herren.

Joyce went to school at Salt Creek School and then to Nickerson High School, graduating in 1955. She married her high school sweetheart, Miles Hartman, on November 24, 1955.

They moved to Manhattan while Miles finished college at K-State in 1958. They then moved to the Kansas City area until January of 1967, when they came back to the farm.

Joyce loved being a farm wife and all that it entails: cooking, baking, keeping the farm books, working alongside Miles, running the tractor and combine, running for parts, running after kids…just running the farm. She was a seamstress, quilter, wood carver, knitter, baker of wonderful bread, rolls, cinnamon rolls…an excellent cook of all things wonderful.

Joyce loved her family, all 50+ of them! Going on a family vacation was a great joy for her, and when she told about her vacations, people would say “How many of you went?” and “You didn’t fight?” and “You still speak to each other?” Joyce thought that was sooo funny…she would say, “What’s to fight about? &nbsp;We all love each other!”

Love was taught in her house, by example…Joyce really knew how to love and insisted on it.

She and Miles shared 68 years of marriage - 70 years altogether - and this year she liked to tell they were 86 years old and had been married 68 years. They liked to go to grandkids’ and great-grandkids’ ball games, programs and all the activities. They loved football, basketball, volleyball and were fans of the KC Chiefs, K-State Wildcats, and Hutch JuCo Blue Dragons.

Fishing and lake life were always a favorite for Joyce. She always caught the first fish, the biggest fish, and the most fish, but she always needed her special pink fishing pole…sale price $9.99!

Joyce had a heart for mission and always encouraged the church ladies to look for a place to give and volunteer. &nbsp;She volunteered at the Hospice House in Hutchinson. Joyce loved her church and church family. &nbsp;She had a big faith and love of Jesus. Joyce hosted Bible Study for 20+years. She had been active in UMW for many years.

Joyce and Miles went on a disaster relief mission trip to Pascagoula Mississippi. She enjoyed helping at Fairview Soup Suppers, was a Sunday School teacher for years and a faithful servant of Jesus.

Joyce belonged to Fairview Country Church, Quilters Guild, Salt Creek Social Club, Salt Creek Supper Club, Road Runners – Partridge, UMW, and was a great 4-H Leader.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, Darlton &amp; Pauline Herren; parents-in-law, Carl &amp; Dorothy Hartman; brother, Donald Gene Herren; sons, Bruce Eugene and Curtis Jay Hartman; and grandson, Steven Lance Depew.

🎥 Champs return home

Timothy Allen Young, 56, passed away March 25, 2024, at his home in Newton, KS after an 11-month battle with cancer.

Tim was born on February 26, 1968, sharing a birthday with his mother, in Wichita, KS to Gerald and Nancy (Ashlock) Young.

Tim graduated from Newton High School in 1986. He received his Associate in Arts at Hutchinson Community College in 1988. After receiving this degree he attended Fort Hays State University. While in Hays, KS he met his future wife Danelle Metcalf. The two of them married on October 10, 1992, in Hays, KS. The couple had two children: Shelbie and Landon. The addition of their two children completed their family. He was an amazing father, grandpa and a loving supportive husband. He was always a good provider for his family always working a "side gig" as he called it, in addition to his full-time job.

He received his Bachelor of Science at Southwestern College in 1998. After the death of his father Gary, he felt called to ministry work. In 2008 he completed his Master of Arts with a major in specialized ministry. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and received their support as he went on to serve as a licensed local pastor for Walton and Buhler UMC from 2005-2008 in the former Kansas West Conference.

He worked at Femco manufacturing in McPherson from 1999-2022 in Accounting, IT, and as HR Manager. In 2022 he made a major shift in his career by changing employment to non profit at Ember Hope in Newton as their HR Manager. He worked passionately at this job and found it extremely rewarding until the end of his life. Even in his last days at home he was still concerned about meetings and things that needed done.

In his younger years he loved singing in the Railaires, golfing with his dad and fishing. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church Praise team as the bass player. He was known for his grilling skills and spent many hours grilling up delicious food. Tim loved Wichita Thunder hockey games, KC Royals, and KC Chiefs. He had a passion for bowling and had bowled two perfect 300 games and an 812 series that he was immensely proud of. He enjoyed a cold Bud Lite and had multiple recipes for his own home brew. He loved his bird feeders and watching the birds. He was an active member of the Sons of the American Legion. You could find him most Friday nights at the Legion with his buds. Tim was a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. He was not pushy but stood solid on his beliefs. He enjoyed using his knowledge of the bible to prove a point when needed.

His most proud achievement in his life were his two children. He was supportive and involved in whatever they chose to do. He coached numerous ball teams and judged debate tournaments. He was also a KSHAA registered softball umpire 2018-2022. It was important to him to be firm yet supportive to the youth to teach them to be respectful and to most importantly to have fun.

Tim is survived by his wife, Danelle; son Landon of Kansas City; and daughter Shelbie (husband Patrick White) of Maize; grandchildren Heidi and Rowan; Mother Nancy Young, Newton; brother Mark Young of Wichita (wife Michelle); Mother in law Donna Metcalf of Nixa, MO; sister in laws Angie Laurin (husband Jeff) of Nixa, MO; Pam Normandin (husband Ivan) of Damar, KS; many nieces and nephews - Valleri, Emily, Nicole, Nathan, Jared, Hayley, Tyler, and 9 great nieces and nephews, a supportive extended family and some of the best friends in the world.

Memorial services will be held Monday, April 15th at 10am at First United Methodist Church, Newton, KS. A graveside service will follow at Restlawn Gardens of Memory.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Newton American Legion or First United Methodist Church, Newton, KS.

He received his Associate in Arts at Hutchinson Community College in 1988. After receiving this degree he attended Fort Hays State University. While in Hays, KS he met his future wife Danelle Metcalf. The two of them married on October 10, 1992, in Hays, KS. The couple had two children: Shelbie and Landon. The addition of their two children completed their family. He was an amazing father, grandpa and a loving supportive husband. He was always a good provider for his family always working a "side gig" as he called it, in addition to his full-time job.He received his Bachelor of Science at Southwestern College in 1998. After the death of his father Gary, he felt called to ministry work. In 2008 he completed his Master of Arts with a major in specialized ministry. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and received their support as he went on to serve as a licensed local pastor for Walton and Buhler UMC from 2005-2008 in the former Kansas West Conference.He worked at Femco manufacturing in McPherson from 1999-2022 in Accounting, IT, and as HR Manager. In 2022 he made a major shift in his career by changing employment to non profit at Ember Hope in Newton as their HR Manager. He worked passionately at this job and found it extremely rewarding until the end of his life. Even in his last days at home he was still concerned about meetings and things that needed done.In his younger years he loved singing in the Railaires, golfing with his dad and fishing. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church Praise team as the bass player. He was known for his grilling skills and spent many hours grilling up delicious food. Tim loved Wichita Thunder hockey games, KC Royals, and KC Chiefs. He had a passion for bowling and had bowled two perfect 300 games and an 812 series that he was immensely proud of. He enjoyed a cold Bud Lite and had multiple recipes for his own home brew. He loved his bird feeders and watching the birds. He was an active member of the Sons of the American Legion. You could find him most Friday nights at the Legion with his buds. Tim was a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. He was not pushy but stood solid on his beliefs. He enjoyed using his knowledge of the bible to prove a point when needed.His most proud achievement in his life were his two children. He was supportive and involved in whatever they chose to do. He coached numerous ball teams and judged debate tournaments. He was also a KSHAA registered softball umpire 2018-2022. MANHATTAN —&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/105/" target="_blank">K-State 105</a>&nbsp;is partnering with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.startuphutch.com/" target="_blank">StartUp Hutch</a>&nbsp;to expand the entrepreneurial ecosystem and foster additional economic growth in Hutchinson and the Reno County region.

The K-State 105 partnership will help expand entrepreneurial services in Reno County by adding an Entrepreneur Navigator, or E-Navigator, to StartUp Hutch.

The E-Navigator will be a pilot program that connects and convenes local entrepreneurs, fosters collaborations and supports new ventures in Reno County.

"We truly believe that all communities can experience economic growth through strategies that start at the local level, and our new K-State 105 partnership with StartUp Hutch aims to do just that by taking an innovative approach with the local entrepreneurship program," said Jessica Gnad, K-State 105 director. "Through K-State 105, we are supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses across all 105 counties, and it's exciting to help this program expand in Reno County."

Through the partnership, StartUp Hutch will expand its services by hiring an additional staff member to help continue coordinating and executing entrepreneurship programs in the community.

"Taking an ecosystem approach creates more connections between existing service providers and also between existing and emerging entrepreneurs," said Jackson Swearer, executive director of StartUp Hutch. "This creates a more resilient system of entrepreneurship support and more points of entry into that system, expanding opportunities for more residents to enter entrepreneurship, which in turn creates more jobs and improved quality of life in communities."

Other partners involved include NetWork Kansas, Hutchinson Community College and K-State Research and Extension.

StartUp Hutch is part of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.networkkansas.com/" target="_blank">NetWork Kansas</a>&nbsp;E-Community Program, short for Entrepreneurship Community, which is an initiative that involves 73 locations across the state that support entrepreneurial work. NetWork Kansas will monitor the program expansion at StartUp Hutch with the goal of replicating the program at other E-Community locations across the state.

"Since 2013 Reno County has been an E-Community partner of NetWork Kansas," said Ciara Miller, south central E-Community manager. "Over the years we have come alongside StartUp Hutch in their entrepreneur support efforts. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For the fourth year, Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy, Hutchinson Community College, USD 308 and Greater Hutch, an Economic Development Partnership for Reno County, are collaborating to host Signing Day on Tuesday, May 7th, 2024 at HC&amp;TEA.

Just as we value athletes who commit to play a college sport, the signing day ceremony is designed to honor students who are entering a technical field and emphasize the importance of their career choice. On the day of the event, high school students, parents, instructors, administration, counselors, industry partners, potential employers, local and government officials will celebrate as students join their peers to commit to their future technical program pathway of choice.

Signing Day set for May 7

CASPER, Wyoming – Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball was indeed golden on Monday night.

Trailing by six points with 2:32 to play in the fourth quarter, the top-seeded Blue Dragons were able to force overtime and then dominate the extra session, outscoring defending national champion Northwest Florida State 19-11 in overtime, win the program’s first national championship with an 88-80 victory in the 2024 NJCAA Division I Women’s Tournament.

The Blue Dragons complete the season 37-0, a school record for wins, longest winning streak and best start to a season.

Freshman Kiki Smith was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. She scored a 23 points to lead the Blue Dragons on 10 of 16 shooting with a 3-pointer.

Sophomore Journey Armstead and freshman Hailey Jackson were both named to the All-Tournament team.

Jackson had a team and career-high 25 points. Armstead had 11 points and three assists before fouling out with 5:09 to play in the fourth quarter.

Monae Duffy had 10 points and 9 rebounds.

The Blue Dragons led by as many as 13 points in the third quarter, but Northwest Florida State rallied to take a 55-53 lead and led 68-62 with 2:27 to play.

The Dragons rallies back, closing with a 7-1 run, getting three free throws from Hailey Jackson with 0.7 seconds to play to tie the game at 69-all.

In overtime, Akaysha Muggeridge, Jackson and Smith scored on consecutive possessions for a 77-71 lead and upped the lead to eight at 81-73 on a Muggeridge hoop with 1:18 to go.

The Blue Dragons were 6 of 6 shooting from the floor and 7 of 10 from the foul line in overtime. Northwest Florida State was 5 of 12.

The Blue Dragon win their first national title in women’s basketball, second women’s national championship and 10th overall national championship.

CASPER, Wyoming – During her sophomore night ceremony in February at the Sports Arena, it was written into the script that&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/armstead_journey_w1mg">Journey Armstead</a>&nbsp;averaged 4 1/2 floor burns per game amongst her other statistics.

For fans who have watched the Hutchinson Community College sophomore point guard from Sand Springs, Oklahoma, over the past two seasons, that average probably isn't far from reality.

"If you aren't getting floor burns and getting bumps and bruises, they you aren't playing hard," Armstead said Sunday after the Blue Dragons' final practice before Monday's NJCAA Women's Tournament national championship game against Northwest Florida State. "Coach always tells us to give our all no matter what. That's just me playing hard."

After a freshman season that had more ups and downs than an amusement park roller coaster, this past summer Armstead dedicated herself to the notion that 2024 wouldn't end like 2023.

It wasn't that Armstead's freshman season was devoid of success – the Blue Dragon women finished 23-8 and earned a first-round bye for the Region VI Tournament with a fourth-place finish in the Jayhawk Conference. A lot of the consternation goes to a stunning quarterfinal loss and a premature end to a sometimes-challenging season.

When dissecting the 2023 season, it was determined a major element was missing – leadership. Armstead wasn't about to let that happed in her sophomore year.

"Last summer when were working out, I had a brand new team," Armstead recalled. "I came in with the mindset that I had to push them. So as a leader, if I do something right and work really hard, they would follow me. I've got to be better every day."

"Journey has really grown up and matured," said head coach John Ontjes, who was a point guard in his playing days at Nickerson High School, Hutchinson Community College and the University of Oklahoma. "She had accepted coaching. Her leadership for the ball club has been very consistent."

Armstead came to Hutchinson out of Charles Page High School as a "pass-first" point guard, meaning she is looking to set up teammates to score. This season, though, Armstead has become a scoring option as well. She said that aspect has been the most improved area of her overall game.

Armstead averaged 9.6 points per game as a freshman. While her season scoring average of 10.0 points as a sophomore isn't much higher, the quality of points and the variety of ways she is scoring has been greatly improved.

Her outside shooting is much better from both the mid-range and 3-point line. But she has become most known for her hard-driving takes to the hoop, many of which find her hitting the floor at the end of the drive.

"Last year I had a lot of scorers on the team and my mentality with that team was pass first and a defensive player," Armstead said. "This year I became better at scoring and passing. I've gotten better at seeing my teammates, but score when I can,"

When asked to compare Armstead with other past Blue Dragon point guards, Ontjes said 2013 point guard Christassia Walter comes to mind. Both Armstead and Walter have the same high-motor mentality and are able to deliver for their teams in very similar ways.

"The point guard had to be the hardest-working kid," Ontjes said. "They have to be very vocal. They have to understand and know time and score. They have to understand when it's time to push the ball and get easy baskets and when it's time to run offense.

"The strength of this team is being able to score in transition and Journey's a big reason why because of her vision."

A second-team All-Jayhawk Conference performer this season, Armstead enters Monday's championship game No. 2 in Blue Dragon career assists with 338. Her 189 assists this season rank No. 4 on the single-season list. Her 5.2 assists per game were second in the KJCCC this season.

Her career-high 11 assists this season against Seward County on February 24 in Liberal tied for the fourth most in Hutchinson single-game history. Armstead has four games or 10 or more assists and 11 career games of eight more assists, including eight this season.

Armstead said there had been thousands of hours of work on and off the court to put those numbers together.

"I go back and watch film a lot," she said. "I look at when I make a mistake, I work to correct myself. I look at how I get a teammate the ball and I have to throw it a certain way to certain players. Coach has helped me a lot with that."

Now the Blue Dragon point guard is looking to finish things off the right way Monday night.

"Coach told us that last year was the first year the team didn't get to put up any kind of banner," she said. "This year we decided to make sure people remember our sophomores. Me, Mo (<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/duffy_monae_og8s">Monae Duffy</a>), Bree (Horyna) and Brynn (McCormick) took that personally and we went out to prove everybody wrong this year."

This season, though, Armstead has become a scoring option as well. She said that aspect has been the most improved area of her overall game.Armstead averaged 9.6 points per game as a freshman. While her season scoring average of 10.0 points as a sophomore isn't much higher, the quality of points and the variety of ways she is scoring has been greatly improved.Her outside shooting is much better from both the mid-range and 3-point line. But she has become most known for her hard-driving takes to the hoop, many of which find her hitting the floor at the end of the drive."Last year I had a lot of scorers on the team and my mentality with that team was pass first and a defensive player," Armstead said. "This year I became better at scoring and passing. I've gotten better at seeing my teammates, but score when I can,"When asked to compare Armstead with other past Blue Dragon point guards, Ontjes said 2013 point guard Christassia Walter comes to mind. Both Armstead and Walter have the same high-motor mentality and are able to deliver for their teams in very similar ways."The point guard had to be the hardest-working kid," Ontjes said. "They have to be very vocal. They have to understand and know time and score. They have to understand when it's time to push the ball and get easy baskets and when it's time to run offense."The strength of this team is being able to score in transition and Journey's a big reason why because of her vision."A second-team All-Jayhawk Conference performer this season, Armstead enters Monday's championship game No. 2 in Blue Dragon career assists with 338. Her 189 assists this season rank No. 4 on the single-season list. Her 5.2 assists per game were second in the KJCCC this season.Her career-high 11 assists this season against Seward County on February 24 in Liberal tied for the fourth most in Hutchinson single-game history. Armstead has four games or 10 or more assists and 11 career games of eight more assists, including eight this season.Armstead said there had been thousands of hours of work on and off the court to put those numbers together."I go back and watch film a lot," she said. "I look at when I make a mistake, I work to correct myself. I look at how I get a teammate the ball and I have to throw it a certain way to certain players. Coach has helped me a lot with that."Now the Blue Dragon point guard is looking to finish things off the right way Monday night."Coach told us that last year was the first year the team didn't get to put up any kind of banner," she said. "This year we decided to make sure people remember our sophomores. Me, Mo (<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/duffy_monae_og8s">Monae Duffy</a>), Bree (Horyna) and Brynn (McCormick) took that personally and we went out to prove everybody wrong this year."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;HutchCC President Carter File will be honored at a retirement reception by the school's Board of Trustees and administration on Tuesday, April 2. 

The reception is from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with remarks at 4:30 p.m. in the Gallery Theatre of the Stringer Fine Arts Center.

File submitted his request to the college board of trustees in November indicating his intent to retire effective August 31, 2024.

File is the college's seventh president. He started at HutchCC in 2005 as the Vice President of Finance and Operations. He was elevated to the presidency in July 2014. His retirement will end his more than 24-year career in higher education.

The championship will be televised on ESPNU with Chris Sylvester (play-by-play) and Brian Burton (color) calling the action.The Blue Dragons make their fourth attempt at the program’s first national championship, also playing in the NJCAA championship game in 2012, 2014 and 2015. Hutchinson advanced to the 2024 title game with a 61-46 semifinal win over No. 20 Eastern Arizona on Saturday.Hutchinson’s defense has been stellar in the national tournament holding all three opponents under 40 percent shooting and two under 30 percent. The Dragons are allowing 48.3 points per game and opponents are shooting 32.3 percent from the field.Northwest Florida State, the Region 8 champion which rides a nine-game win streak into the finals, defeated No. 2-seed Wabash Valley 86-72 in Saturday’s semifinals. The Raiders defeated No. 14 Casper 76-69 in the quarterfinals and No. 11 Three Rivers 69-54 in the quarterfinals.Just like Hutchinson’s semifinal game, Monday’s championship game features two of the nation’s top defensive teams. The Blue Dragons rank 10th in the NJCAA in scoring defense (53.1 points per game) and No. 3 in field-goal defense (32.6 percent). Northwest Florida State third in scoring defense (49.4 points per game) and is eighth in field-goal defense (33.2 percent).Monday’s matchup will be the third in series history between the Blue Dragons and Raiders with all three games contested in the national tournament. The Blue Dragons won meetings with Northwest Florida State in 2013 (quarterfinals, 73-71) and in 2015 (quarterfinals, 68-54).The Blue Dragons are 4-1 all-time in the NJCAA Tournament against Region 8 teams.
