Jo Anne L. “Jodie” Ching, 82, died March 26, 2024, at Thorne Care Center, Hutchinson, Kansas. She was born September 27, 1941, in Hutchinson, to Richard Lee “Virgil” and Anna Mildred (Black) Landrum. Jodie and her family attended the Church of the Brethren in Hutchinson as children.
Jodie graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1959 and attended Hutchinson Junior College. As a young woman she worked as a Nurse’s Aide at Hutchinson Hospital before moving to California. In California she worked various administrative jobs, including office manager, legal assistant, worker’s comp examiner, as well as a promotional representative for a tool company at Home and Boat Shows throughout California. However, she took the most pride in working at Silverton Casino in Las Vegas, NV as a Security Officer, and cherished friendships she made there.
Jodie loved fishing with her family and all animals, especially dogs. She even worked with the Humane Society and enjoyed caring for animals in need of extra love. Jodie’s friends and family will remember her for her playful spirit, silly humor, and her desire to care for others.
On August 21, 1988, she married Clarence Hon “Sam” Ching, in North Hollywood, CA with a memorable celebration in Ensenada, Mexico with family and friends. They shared their love of dogs and had great fishing adventures together. He died March 2, 2003 in Las Vegas. Soon after Jodie returned home to Hutchinson, KS to spend her final years.
Jodie is survived by: sister-in-law, Myrna Landrum of Huntingdon, PA; niece, Rochelle Noel (husband Jhake) of Lancaster, CA; nephews, Richard W. Landrum (wife Sandy) and Charles L. Landrum, all of Huntingdon, PA; great-nieces and great-nephews, Michael Noel, Jakeh Landrum, Rebecca Landrum, Rachel Landrum, Randy Landrum, Ricky Landrum, and Charles Landrum; cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; infant sister, Patricia Landrum; husband Sam Ching; brother, Richard “Dick” Landrum; and her beloved dog, Lapu-Lapu.
Special thanks to friends that over the last several years took extraordinary efforts to help care for her and to the loving staff at the Thorne Care Center.
A private family service will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Hutchinson Animal Shelter and the Lucky Dog Program (Friends of Animal’s in Need, Inc.) in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
