Born the 14th of 17 children on January 26th 1928, and bestowed the honor of the name Bert Chaney Jr; whether his family had simply run out of names or because they knew he was destined for greatness is unknown but he lived up to the latter. He was born to Bert and Eva Katherine (Richarz) Chaney on the family farm northwest of Coffeyville, KS. Bert was always a hard worker, starting his first job at the age of 9 working in a candy shop in order to help his family. He served in the Air Force for 3 years. &nbsp;He graduated from Pittsburg State with his BS and Master’s Degree in political science.

Bert was extremely proud of his career in education. He began teaching junior high students in Kansas City, KS. While there, he met the love of his life, Marilyn Johnson. They were married April 4th, 1958 and moved to Hutchinson the following August where he began his teaching tenure at Hutch Juco in the fall of 1958, teaching classes in political science, government, and history. He would go on to teach there for 32 years. He was an instrumental part of implementing the GED diploma program within the local prison, opening education opportunities for thousands of people. He also coordinated a citizenship program to provide the training and education necessary for illegal aliens to qualify for citizenship.

He was always focused on civic duty and was a true man of the people. In 1966, Bert was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives where he served for 6 years and then served in the Kansas Senate for 12 years. Some of his proudest legislations included a bill removing the discriminatory height requirement for police officers and firefighters, a bill allowing citizens to purchase drugs by generic name, and the requirement for all children to receive the Measles, Mumps, Rubella vaccine protecting the children of the state of Kansas. All these laws are still in effect. He was known for being a great defender of democratic government and strongly held the belief that government exists to help the average working person.

Bert was also a family man. He and Marilyn had 3 children; Melissa, Cindy, and Doug. They spent many summers traveling the country. He always wanted his children to carry the same values of service to others. These dreams were fulfilled as his eldest, Melissa, served as a teacher in Hutchinson for 36 years, his middle child, Cindy, served on the Hutchinson City Council for 8 years and held the title of Mayor, and his youngest, Doug, will be retiring after 25 years as superintendent/principal of Hodgeman County in Jetmore. He was also proud and actively involved in the raising of his 7 grandchildren. He enjoyed taking them on trips, doing puzzles together, and baking his famous chocolate chip cookies.

He had many hobbies and passions. He was a fan of cheering on the Jayhawks, often telling the story of his brief stint at KU as a student on the GI bill where he was housed in the basement of Memorial Stadium. Bert had a passion for gardening, which brought in many visitors to take in his beautiful horticulture. He also spent time beekeeping, to which he would refine his own honey and sell it to other legislators as well as giving it to family and friends. Bert was an avid reader up until recent years keeping up with all the latest research and politics. His grandchildren rarely left a visit without at least 2-3 cut out articles, always chosen for each person’s specific interest and passions. He was always teaching even when out of the classroom.

Ultimately, Bert was blessed to live 96 years. &nbsp;He filled that time with so many triumphs for which he will always be remembered. His life truly revolved around others; the students he taught, the constituents he served, and the family he loved.

Bert is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Johnson) Chaney; daughters: &nbsp;Melissa Law and Cindy Proett, of Hutchinson, Doug (Connie) Chaney of Jetmore; 7 grandchildren: Alex Law, Katelyn (Phillip) Twist, Abbey Chaney, Grace (Jack) Howard, Grant Chaney, Jack Proett, Candice Chaney; and 4 great-grandchildren, Lucy Law, River Law, Charlie Twist, and Hattie Twist.

He is preceded in death by his parents, all 16 of his siblings, and his son-in-law, Barry Law.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Art Center announced Wednesday the live music acts for the Hutchinson Art Fair, which will take place on Saturday, May 11 from 9:00 a.m.&nbsp; to 4:00 p.m. at the Sunflower South Building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

Color Green is a Bluegrass/Gospel group based in the Hutchinson/Yoder, KS area, and have been together for about two years. The five members bring many years of musical history into the group. Although they’ve cut out their teeth on Bluegrass &amp; Gospel music, other genres have been added — because they’re too good to pass up! They have been playing locally at craft showed, churches and about wherever anyone will listen!

Justin Riggs is a singer-songwriter from Hutchinson, KS who plays original country and folk tunes. He has performed at the Reno County Farmer’s Market and Metropolitan Coffee as well as in various venues across the great Sunflower State. He released his debut album Hawk | Bison | Sun in February 2022.

Fifty Years Late is returning to the Hutchinson Art Fair stage! Originally formed in 1957 by two Oxford, KS high school students, the group broke up in 1961 as they headed off to college and reformed in 2011 after the band members entered retirement. The trio plays early rock 'n' roll, performing in the style of legendary 1950s and 1960s acts such as the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Johnny Rivers and more!&nbsp;&nbsp;

Linda Ruth Neher, 60, died April 6, 2024, at Sparkling Fountain Homes Senior Care Facility, Overland Park. She was born as Alice Marie Gulling to Gerald and Darlene Gulling on November 15, 1963, in Des Moines, IA. She was adopted by Eldon LaVern and Joanna Marie (Hooge) Boese on April 6, 1965.

Linda earned an Associate of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education from Hesston College in 1984 and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1986 from Bethel College, Newton. She signed up for Mennonite Voluntary Service after college. The first year, she was a teacher’s aide at Friendship Day Care and the second year, she was an activities aide at Mennonite Friendship Manor, this is where she met her husband, Scott.

Linda enjoyed coloring, cross stitching, singing, playing the piano and accordion, and writing. &nbsp;

On March 25, 1989, she married Scott Edwin Neher, in South Hutchinson. They shared over 32 years of marriage prior to his death on September 18, 2021.

Linda is survived by: her children, Christopher (Savana) Neher, Katelyn (Dustin) Harman both of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Sereniti Harman, Shiloh Neher, Salem Neher; adoptive sister, Helen (Boese) Adams and husband, Brian of CA; biological siblings, Gerald, Jr., Larry, Sherry, Patsy, Helen, Betty, Kathy, Carol, Tim, Loretta, and Jessie Ann; parents-in-law, Doyle and Sharon Neher of Pfeifer; sisters-in-law, Vicki (David) Stoll of OK, Pamela (Marcelo) Hernandez of Branson, MO; brothers-in-law, Steve (Jolene) Neher of Lawrence and Jefferey (Jesica) Neher of Pfeifer.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Charlotte, NC -&nbsp;Hutchinson's Kiki Smith has been named the 2024 NJCAA DI Women's Basketball Player of the Year.

The freshman guard out of Topeka, Kansas posted 652 points, 117 rebounds, 84 steals, 82 assists, and 20 blocks in 37 games played and started. Smith's 652 points aided in the Blue Dragons being third in the nation in scoring with a total of 2874 points. In the national tournament alone, she totaled 68 points, 14 rebounds, 9 steals, 6 assists, and 3 blocks. In the national title game, Smith was the third leading scorer on offense with 23 points and 4 steals on defense.

John Ontjes, Head Coach- "Kiki had one of the most epic seasons in blue dragon history.&nbsp; She is a player that always made plays within the system but in every big moment elevated her game and produced winning plays. Kiki is one of the most unselfish and competitive players that I have ever coached.&nbsp; She is a player who is very driven and works extremely hard.&nbsp; Kiki will be remembered as one of the best players in Blue Dragon history!"&nbsp;&nbsp;

On top of being Hutchinson's leading scorer this season, Smith set the Hutchinson Community College freshman scoring record. Her 652 points also landed her second in points scored in a single season for the Blue Dragons while her 96 three-pointers landed her fifth in a single season.

Smith was originally committed to the University of Evansville before flipping her commitment to Hutchinson. On top of ending her first season with the Blue Dragons as an NJCAA National Champion, Smith was named as the National Tournament MVP and was named to the 2024 NJCAA DI Women's Basketball First-Team All-America team.

Call hired by Bank of the Plains

HUTCHINSON, Kan.  — New York Times bestselling author and an award-winning staff writer at The New Yorker magazine David Grann will present the second Dillon Lecture of the 2024 Series. Grann’s lecture will be held Tuesday, April 16 at 10:30 am at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

His most recent book, The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder, was published in April of 2023. Grann is next lecturer Tuesday for DLS

Dwight E. Spence, 93, of McPherson, KS, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at The Cedars in McPherson.

Dwight was born on September 13, 1930, in McPherson, KS, the son of Homer Richard and Maggie Mae (McClain) Spence.&nbsp; He was raised on a farm just north of McPherson and attended Centerview Country Grade School just north of McPherson through the 8th&nbsp;grade.&nbsp; He attended and graduated from McPherson High School and later graduated from McPherson College with a BS Degree in Business Administration.&nbsp; He graduated from Railroad Communications School in Kansas City and worked for the Rock Island Railroad Company for 17 years as a telegraph operator and station agent.&nbsp; He worked for Kit Manufacturing Co. for 26 years in several capacities, as cost accountant, controller, purchasing manager, and general manager.&nbsp; This employment was terminated shortly after the mobile home plant in McPherson was destroyed by a tornado in June 1992.&nbsp; After retirement, he worked about nine years as a delivery person for O’Dell’s Laundry.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953.

On February 10, 1952, Dwight was united in marriage to Winifred Lucile Jones in Canton, KS.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on August 7, 2003.

Dwight was an active member of the First Baptist Church of McPherson and a member of the Y.E.S. Sunday school class.&nbsp; He was a 50 year plus member of McPherson Odd Fellow Lodge No. 376 and served as Noble Grand of the lodge for several years.&nbsp; He was also a member of McPherson Elks Lodge, American Legion Post #24, and former member and past president of McPherson Light Capitol Kiwanis Club.

He had a close relationship with his family and friends and enjoyed watching his grandchildren perform in their activities.&nbsp;

Dwight is survived by his two sons: Steve Spence of McPherson, KS and Lee Spence of Hutchinson, KS; four grandchildren, April Spence of Chicago, IL, Abbigail (John) Peddieson of Henderson, NV, Dustin (Megan) Spence &nbsp;of Olathe, KS, and Alex Spence of Hutchinson, KS; three great-grandchildren, Olivia Peddieson, Eliza Spence, and Jameson Spence; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; granddaughter, Dixie Spence; daughters-in-law, Nadine Spence and Debbie Spence; brother, Richard Spence; and a sister, Audrey McNichols.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Thursday, April 18, 2024, at Stockham Family Funeral Home.&nbsp; The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, April 19, at the First Baptist Church.&nbsp; Burial will follow at McPherson Cemetery.

Mildred Ann (Millie) Davis, 81, of Mcpherson, Kansas passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at McPherson Health and Rehab.

Mildred was born in McPherson, Kansas on February 24, 1943, the daughter of the Albert and Agnes (Willard) Pearson.

Millie attended Wickersham Elementary, McPherson Junior High and graduated from McPherson High School, McPherson, Kansas in 1961. Then Millie attended Sidney's Hairdressing College, Hutchinson, Kansas in 1963.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in McPherson.

Through the years Millie worked for Beaumart and First Impressions as a beautician, both in McPherson.

Millie was a member of Elks Club, enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and family, teaching Sunday school, collecting baseball cards and Beanie Babies, quilting, gardening, fishing, camping, boating, cooking, and traveling to the Ozarks.

Mildred Ann Pearson was united in marriage to John Mellroy Davis on October 13, 1962 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in McPherson. The young couple established their first home together in McPherson.

She is survived by her children; daughter, Melissa (Chasson) Holcom of Tescott, KS, son, Mike Davis of Salina, KS and foster son, Monnie (Kelly) King of Hutchinson, KS;

16 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; and brother, Floyd (Carla) Pearson of McPherson.

Millie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mel Davis; brother, George Pearson; and her sisters, Margie Bell and Delores Stricker.

Visitation will be held 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, 2024 at Trinity Lutheran Church in McPherson. Funeral Service will be held 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 15, 2024 at Trinity Lutheran Church, with The Pastor Bernita Richards officiating. Burial will be in McPherson Cemetery.

Edward “Eddie” Leroy Ventsam, 77, a Vietnam veteran, former resident of Hutchinson and longtime resident of Costa Rica, passed away on Friday, April 5, 2024, at Hospice House in Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;He was with loved ones in his final days.

Ed was born February 26, 1947, the eldest and only son of Marvin “Barney” and Ila Maurine (Burden) Ventsam. He graduated from Haven High in 1965 and attended Hutchinson Community College and Kansas State University. &nbsp;He ran cross country track, was a big brother to his sisters and spent summers doing construction work. He could build and design just about anything– a trade he learned from his dad and grandfather. &nbsp;In 1967, he enlisted in the US Army where he served in Vietnam before being honorably discharged in 1973. &nbsp;He returned to Haven, married, and had one daughter, Samantha Ventsam. He spent much of his adult life in Haven and Hutchinson until he relocated to Costa Rica.

He was a very proud and supportive dad and grandpa. He loved his sisters, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. He was blessed with deep friendships– many spanning his entire life– and all with a full stock of memories and stories to tell. &nbsp;Ed loved to fish, cook, read, play pitch at the VFW, grow plants, landscape, listen to tunes and watch football and basketball. He was up for just about anything. Ed was highly intelligent, creative and possessed a keen understanding of people. Sometimes he had a lot to say, but more often he would sum it up in a few poignant words. He had his own brand of wit, yet also a deep sensitivity for those he loved.

Ed spent the last 15 years in Costa Rica. &nbsp;He lived a life he loved in a beautiful climate where he could enjoy blue water fishing, coastal trips, sunsets, cold beers and barefeet. He grew gorgeous plants and orchids, cooked, baked and enjoyed strong coffee and morning visits from hummingbirds at his home in San Jose. &nbsp;

Ed is preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Gloria Ventsam. He is survived by his daughter, Samantha Ventsam and grandson, Zane Stewart of Olathe, KS; three sisters, Jeanette (Ed) Ladd of Hutchinson, KS, Diane (Mike) Krone of Geneseo, KS, and Dena (Jim) Kirkman of Mt. Hope, KS.

Next January, when the fishing conditions are arguably the best, we will take our dad, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend to sea on his final fishing trip in Quepos, Costa Rica. Alex was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Floyd Logan, Sr. and RuthAnn “Sweetie” Swanson and his maternal grandparents, Norvel C. Holeman and Patricia (Pope) Stahlheber, a brother, Willie Lewis, a sister Amitty Logan and a stepson, Tayvon Starr. Alex graduated from High School at the age of 16, attended Hutchinson Community College at 18 for a short time with his mother pursuing a degree in Animation. Later on, he also attended Washburn University for a time pursuing a career in Business. He was a very skilled laborer in Construction and was knowledgeable about various different areas of his field. He loved working as long as it was something difficult and physically straining. Alex was part of the clean-up crew that went to Louisiana and Texas with the Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief in 2017 and joined several other clean-up projects that were similar. He was on the carnie circuit from September 2021 until about October 2022 and had the time of his life travelling all over the US, making new friends in every new city they visited. Alex was a believer in Yahweh and Yahshua and walked in his relationship with the Father to the best of his ability. He is a member of the Miami Nation of Oklahoma, but also a descendant of the Cherokee Nation and several other tribes.

Alex was an amazing, kind-hearted, friendly, loving and very well-liked young man. He took pride in being a dad who loved his kids more than anything and becoming a grandpa changed his entire life. Alex never knew a stranger and his arms were always open to a friend or family member in need. He gave the best bear hugs, had a contagious laugh and the warmest smile. He was a very special and unique man, who marched to the beat of his own drum. Alex often told his mother that he didn’t feel like he fit in anywhere and he was sad about that, because it made him feel left out. She’d tell him that was because he wasn’t like anyone else and that he wasn’t meant to fit in, he was meant to stand out.

Alex’s Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 11, 2024, at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave, Hutchinson, KS. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at the funeral home. Burial will take place at a later date. Alex never knew a stranger and his arms were always open to a friend or family member in need. He gave the best bear hugs, had a contagious laugh and the warmest smile. He was a very special and unique man, who marched to the beat of his own drum. Alex often told his mother that he didn’t feel like he fit in anywhere and he was sad about that, because it made him feel left out. She’d tell him that was because he wasn’t like anyone else and that he wasn’t meant to fit in, he was meant to stand out.Alex’s Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 11, 2024, at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave, Hutchinson, KS. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at the funeral home. Burial will take place at a later date. Jill Renee (Kauffman) Alpers, 54, of Wichita, transitioned from her earthly home to her heavenly home Monday, April 8, 2024, with her family by her side. &nbsp;She was born March 15, 1970, in Hutchinson, to Willis Leon and Thelma Faye (Yutzy) Kauffman.&nbsp;

Jill graduated from Kingman High School in 1988, Hesston College in 1990, and Kansas State University in 1994. &nbsp;She worked at Fruhauf Uniforms before starting a family, and again after her children were in school for a total of 15 years. &nbsp;Jill was a stay-at-home mom for 14 years, and was a gifted seamstress. &nbsp;She enjoyed running, quilting, sewing for family and friends, and made the best cheese dip and desserts. &nbsp;Jill’s main priorities were instilling a strong faith in her children and supporting them at their various activities.

Jill’s time on this earth was all too short, but her grit and determination to fight her aggressive cancer, even on the difficult days, left an imprint on her family and friends to never give up and to keep the faith. We will miss her terribly, but we know her body is now made anew and she can walk, run, and sew again.

On October 17, 1998, she married Aaron Wayne Alpers, in Wichita.

Jill is survived by: &nbsp;her husband of 25 years, Aaron; children, Nathan Alpers, Austin Alpers, and Shayla Alpers, all of Wichita; parents, Thelma and Willis Kauffman of South Hutchinson; brother, Jon Kauffman (Meg) of Bryn Mawr, PA; sister-in-law, Sonja Reiser (Dennis) of Hutchinson; nephew, Jesse Kauffman (Elsa) of Charlotte, NC; nieces, Catie Kauffman of Austin, TX, &nbsp;Allison Westbrook (Bryant) of Wichita, and Kimberly Reiser of Hutchinson; and numerous loving and supportive aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her in-laws, Wayne and Lula Mae (Irion) Alpers.

The Hutchinson Community College Theatre Department will present The Boys Next Door this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 12 - 14. The show will be held at 7:00 p.m. on April 12 - 13 and at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 14 at the Stringer Fine Arts Center B.J. Warner Recital Hall on the HutchCC campus. Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for non-HutchCC students and will be available nightly prior to each performance.

The Boys Next Door is a play by Tom Griffin, first produced in 1986. Set in the Boston area, it deals with four men with various mental disabilities who live in a group home. It takes place over roughly a two-month period and consists of brief vignettes about the men's lives. The play provides a humorous commentary on the men's lives, taking a surprising turn as Barry's father comes to visit and as Jack (their caretaker) accepts a new job. It was adapted into a television film in 1996 by Hallmark Entertainment. The show is being produced in collaboration with TECH with the goal of connecting with the audience to educate and advocate.

HutchCC and TECH collaborate on theatre production

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team capped off its unbeaten and national championship season with a celebration on Tuesday at the Sports Arena.&nbsp;

Hundreds of attendees were able to hear speeches from freshman Kiki Smith, freshman Hailey Jackson, head coach John Ontjes, Sports Information Director Steve Carpenter, HutchCC President Dr. Carter File, city of Hutchinson interim City Manager Mary Grace Clements, and Voice of the Blue Dragons, Sean Boston. HutchCC Public Address voice and My 93-1 personality Daren Dunn announced the team, as well.&nbsp;

The HutchCC athletic department also put together several highlight videos to show off the accomplishments throughout the entire season, plus a special presentation of highlights from the national championship run in Casper, Wyoming.

🏀 WBB: Blue Dragons put bow on season with national championship celebration

McPherson High School is excited to announce Clint Kinnamon as the next head coach of the Lady Pup Basketball Program! Coach Kinnamon comes to MHS with 32 years of head coaching experience, that includes 15 state tournament appearances, four state championships, three runners-up, two third place finishes, and one COVID final four.

Coach Kinnamon has a proven track record leading several successful programs that include the girl’s program at Claflin, and the boy’s programs at Arkansas City, St. John-Hudson, Wichita-East &amp; Remington, amassing a 520-240 career record as a head coach. His St. John’s teams hold the state record for winning percentage in all classes at the state tournament, 85.6% (18-4), and set the state record for consecutive wins at 63 (2013-15). Kinnamon has helped develop multiple players that have made the jump to the next level after high school, including Jackie Stiles at Claflin, and Dean Wade at St. John. Coach Kinnamon has been honored as the Topeka Capitol Journal Co-Coach of the Year (‘15), KBCA Basketball

Coach of the Year 4X (‘07, ‘13, ‘14, ‘15), Sports in Kansas Coach of the Year 3X (‘14, ‘15, ‘20), Varsity Kansas Coach of the Year 3X (‘14, ‘15, ‘20), Kansas Coaches Association Coach of the Year (‘14), Western Kansas Coach of the Year 8X (‘94, ‘95, ‘96, ‘04, ‘06, ‘07, ‘08, ‘15) and Ark Valley League Co-Coach of the Year (‘01).

Coach Kinnamon, who is a graduate of Hutchinson Community College and McPherson College, will teach in the McPherson Alternative Center at MHS beginning next fall.

McPherson Activities Director, Shane Backhus, said this about the hire: “We are very excited for Clint Kinnamon to lead the McPherson High Girls Basketball Program into the future. We did a state wide search, and had excellent applicants and interviews. Coach Kinnamon set himself apart through the interview process with his passion and knowledge of the game, experience, and ability to build great relationships with students and players. Our interview committee was extremely impressed with his desire to develop teams with high character and tough competitors. Coach Kinnamon has the experience and ability to lead our program into the future, and carry on the traditions of success, which were established by former coaches Scott Schafer and Chris Strathman.”

Coach Kinnamon shared these thoughts as he makes the transition to MHS: "Following two highly successful coaches is never an easy task. Coach Schafer and Coach Strathman both did an amazing job leading the Girls Basketball program for many years and have left it in great shape. I'm extremely excited to become part of the tradition that is Bullpup Girls Basketball and will try to continue and build upon their success. There is a lot of talent in McPherson and I am thrilled to get the chance to meet the high school, middle school and youth players to talk about my vision to lead the program for years to come."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Joel Michaelis, Ed.D., serves as the Vice President of Instruction at Southeast Community College in Lincoln, Nebraska. Previously, Dr. Michaelis also served in the Chief Academic Officer role at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College in Middlesboro, Kentucky and also at Hill College in Hillsboro, Texas. Dr. Michaelis earned a Doctor of Education in Higher Education Administration from Baylor University, a Master of Education in Higher Education administration from The University of Texas, and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management from Texas A&amp;M University.

Dr. Michaelis has worked in education for over 30 years, starting as a 6th&nbsp;grade mathematics instructor and has served in various administrative roles in student services, workforce development and academics in community colleges in Texas, Kentucky, and Nebraska. He is also a graduate of Paris High School and attended Paris Junior College for a year prior to transferring to Texas A&amp;M.

Third HutchCC President finalist on campus Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The second of three finalists for the Presidential Search at Hutchinson Community College is on campus on Monday.

Greg Nichols is President and CEO of Salina Area Technical College. As a lifelong learner, he earned a BBA from the University of Oklahoma, MS from Emporia State University, completed coursework for a Doctorate in Education with an emphasis in Organizational Leadership and is pursuing a Doctor of Business Administration. He holds a post-graduate certificate in District Level Leadership and Superintendent License. Nichols began his career as a math teacher in Ness City then moved to El Dorado to continue his teaching career. He began teaching in higher education at Butler Community College as an adjunct instructor, then he accepted a position at Cowley College as a math instructor earning the 2010 Outstanding Teacher Award and later promoted to Associate Dean of Instruction. Prior to coming to Salina, he served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Colby Community College. While there, he helped to move Colby Community College from probation status to fully accredited with the Higher Learning Commission - HLC. He also helped Colby CC grow their online college 400 percent in three years.

Nichols began his tenure at Salina Tech July 1, 2016, as the college’s second president. During his tenure, Salina Tech has initiated new programs that meet the needs of the community including Early Childhood Education, Dental Hygiene, Nursing, Police Science, and Fire Science. Additional new programs coming in 2024 include Industrial Maintenance and Automation and Pharmacy Technician. The college also expanded its relationships with area USDs to provide affordable general and technical education to area high school students. In addition, SATC partnered with the Kansas Army National Guard to promote synchronized training for soldiers. The college experienced significant growth since gaining HLC accreditation in November 2016 adding approximately 500 students enrolled annually, 30 full-time employees, and growing the foundation assets nearly 10 times. The growth trajectory overcomes trends and remains a pinnacle of success in educating Kansans.

Nichols is married to Melissa, who teaches math at Abilene HS, and they have four children: Samantha and husband Matt, Isaac and wife Jennifer, Gabriel, and Joelle and one grandchild Gentry. He is a former college quiz bowl coach and an avid sports fan who remains active by coaching and officiating youth, middle and high school athletics.

Second Presidential Search finalist at HutchCC Monday

The Greatest Generation has lost another warrior. Early in the morning of April 4, 2024, while sleeping peacefully, the Reverend Harold Eskil Nelson, age 100, of Manhattan, KS (formerly McPherson, KS) was beckoned to reunite with the love of his life, Evelyn, the only woman he ever kissed.

Born on his mother’s birthday, September 14, 1923, near Scandia, KS, Harold was the 7th of nine brothers and sisters to bless Otto and Olive Nelson.&nbsp;&nbsp;He often quipped that delivering a baby was likely not the way his mother hoped to spend her birthday.&nbsp;Growing up during the Depression, the family frequently moved from farmstead to farmstead as sharecroppers throughout Republic County. It was the Swedish Methodist Church of Scandia that provided stability, spiritual guidance and a community of care for the Nelson clan. Harold’s grandfather, Oliver Nelson, was a founding member of the church and his father, Otto, frequently sang the traditional Swedish song “Tryggare kan ingen vara” (Children of The Heavenly Father) at funerals until he was well into his 80s.&nbsp; For more than a century, there was always a Nelson in the church choir. This solid foundation molded the faith and theological perspective that would guide Harold throughout his lifetime.

Harold graduated from Scandia High School in 1941. Following&nbsp;graduation, he worked as a farmer for a year before enrolling at Kansas Wesleyan University in the fall of 1942. Proudly, Harold was one of more than 80 members of the Nelson family to have attended KWU at some point during their academic journey.

Harold’s collegiate pursuit of a history major was interrupted in Spring 1943 when drafted to serve in WWII. He volunteered for the newly formed Army Air Corps, later sharing in his understated manner “the decision was pretty easy when I noticed airmen slept in barracks while soldiers survived on the ground in cold, wet tents!” Harold survived 22&nbsp;missions as a B-17 tail gunner of the 341st Bomb Squadron, 97th Bomb Group.&nbsp; Flying from a base in Foggia, Italy his squadron was always escorted by the Red Tails, the heroic Tuskegee Airmen. Harold once shared, “I never had to fire my machine gun because the Red Tails were always protecting us.” &nbsp;On VE day, he returned to his barrack, sat on the edge of his bed, put his head in his hands and cried.

In 2022 while traveling through the South with daughter Nita and son-in-law Jack, Harold visited the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site and Museum.&nbsp; The staff was honored and thrilled by his visit.&nbsp; They posted Harold’s picture on their Facebook page and those in attendance asked to have their picture taken with him.

Harold returned to Kansas Wesleyan after the war. At convocation in Sams Chapel for incoming freshmen, a young woman in the audience nudged her friend next to her, pointed to a young man on the stage and said, “That’s the man I’m going to marry.” True to her word, Evelyn Eisenhauer married Harold at University Methodist Church, Salina, KS on July 25, 1948.

His love for the KWU Coyotes never faltered. In 1983, Harold was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Divinity by Kansas Wesleyan. In 2015, Evelyn and Harold were joint recipients of the Alumni Service Award. The Harold and Evelyn (Eisenhauer) Nelson Endowed Scholarship Fund has been supporting Kansas Wesleyan students in the fields of Religion and Education for decades.&nbsp;

After college graduation, Harold contemplated a choice between farming or following a call to the ministry. With the money from savings bonds purchased during the war, he purchased farmland in Jewell County. That land is still farmed by Harold’s nephew, Ron Fredrickson, and Ron’s son, Jeremy. However, as a young lad, he had been transfixed by stories from his uncle, Oscar Peterson, who had served as a missionary in the Philippines during the early 20th century. That uncle was also one of the first of the Nelson relatives to attend KWU. Ultimately, Harold followed the spirit in his heart to serve the Lord. The young couple spent one year in Kentucky at Asbury Seminary. After one year, he enrolled at Drew University in New Jersey, concurrently serving the historic Woodrow Methodist Church on Staten Island, NY. While there, Harold and Evelyn were blessed with the birth of their first child, daughter Sonia Sue born in Brooklyn Methodist Hospital (1952).&nbsp;Upon graduation from seminary, the bishop of New Jersey approached Harold and promised the best Garden State assignment available, but the desire to return to their Kansas roots was a&nbsp;stronger pull.&nbsp;

Thus, Harold was appointed pastor of the Methodist churches in Gypsum, KS and Roxbury, KS (1954-1961). Sonia became the big sister to brother Douglas Ray (1955) and Anita Marie (1958). Subsequent appointments took Harold and Evelyn to serve churches in Phillipsburg, KS (1961-1968), Winfield, KS (1968-1972), District Superintendent in Hutchinson, KS (1972-1978) and finally First United Methodist Church, McPherson, KS (1978-1988). After serving as Associate Pastor for Trinity United Methodist Church of Hutchinson, KS (1988-1991), Harold returned to McPherson First United Methodist Church to do pastoral care until 2017. Harold continued to actively work for the church community until he was 94 visiting church members in the hospital or confined to their homes and calling membership on their birthdays and anniversaries. His talents for fiscal stewardship, youth ministry and congregational growth were appreciated by denomination leadership and key qualities that influenced his appointments.

Harold’s community service extended beyond the sanctuary. He was an active member of Lions Club for more than 65 years. It wasn’t unusual for him to receive a phone call during the middle of the night requesting he drive to another town to pick up a pair of donated eyes from a recently deceased, and deliver them so that another may see. Harold served in leadership positions for several civic service organizations, including the McPherson Chamber of Commerce. Evelyn and he were actively involved in fundraising for the restoration of the McPherson Opera House. He served on the Board of Trustees for Kansas Wesleyan University, Southwestern College and St. Paul’s School of Theology. Harold served on the original Board of Trustees for the construction of Wesley Towers in Hutchinson. He served as a delegate to World Methodist Conferences in Kenya, China and Germany.

In the early 1960s, the family spent summers camping in a tent or a homemade trailer at family church camps. For two summers, he led Methodist canoe camps for high school boys in the boundary waters of northern Minnesota. In 1964, on the recommendation of his district superintendent, he purchased a cabin nestled in Wahatoya Canyon between the Spanish Peaks near La Veta, CO in what is now commonly referred to as “Little Kansas.” Over the years that slice of “Preacher’s Heaven” was shared with literally hundreds of teenagers in MYF groups, family, church members and friends who experienced spiritual rejuvenation, relaxation, honeymoons and escape from the Kansas heat. Sharing their slice of heaven with others provided Harold and Evelyn with some of their happiest memories. Pre-dawn mornings evenings spent fishing, sharing conversation with friends and making popcorn over the coals brought them great joy. It is fitting that Psalm 121 (“I lift my eyes to the hills”) is engraved upon Harold and Evelyn’s shared gravestone and the traditional Swedish hymn “How Great Thou Art” will be included in his memorial service.

Harold transferred his love of farming to his lawn and garden, and enjoyed sharing his “crop.” During the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Harold spent days in the kitchen making his famous popcorn cakes to be gifted to friends and family.

One of his biggest regrets was he always felt he was too scrawny to play sports.&nbsp; However, he had a deep passion for the teams he loved: the Royals, Wildcats, Chiefs, the local high school teams, the Big 8 and Big XII conference teams…and his beloved KWU Coyotes. Doug once asked Harold why the family always had to listen to the lowly Kansas City A’s. “Because I’m a part owner,” he replied. For years Doug believed him! Travels to Kansas City for the annual Big 8 and Big XII basketball tournaments became an annual ritual during retirement. One of Harold’s fondest sports memories was attending Game 7 of the 2014 World Series with Doug at the age of 91.

He and Evelyn took great joy traveling to watch their grandchildren’s athletic events, concerts and performances.&nbsp; It wasn’t unusual for them to travel halfway across to the state to witness a grandchild swim in one race!&nbsp;

Harold is survived by his three children Sonia Nelson (Jeff Mackey) of Edmonds, WA, Douglas Nelson (Janice) of Bonner Springs KS, and Anita Wiley (Jack) of Manhattan, KS; five grandchildren Amber Atchison (Chance), Kyle Bergquist (Allie), Neil Bergquist (Anna), Tyler Klug and Jillian Nelson; five step-grandchildren, Greg Klug (Sheri), Denet Brightbill (Scott), Kevin Mackey (Lisa), Christy Green (Shane) and Brian Mackey; five great-grandchildren, Karson Stroda, Easton Atchison, Jack Bergquist, Theo Bergquist and Harrison Atchison; 11 step-grandchildren, Erin Mackey, Kirsten Mackey, Lindsey Mackey Nickolas Mackey, Alyssa Green, Cameron Green, Kaitlyn Green, Joshua Mackey, Sebastian Jorden Klug, Natasha Klug and Gage Smith; two step-great-great granddaughters, Jaiden Klug and Charlie Klug. Evelyn and Harold also have two former international student-daughters that lived with them, Gill Collingwood from Wales and Susi Konigseder from Austria.

Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Nelson; parents, Otto and Olive Nelson and all eight of his siblings: Leslie Nelson, Katherine Fike, Clarice Fredrickson, Clarence “Bud” Nelson, Vincent Nelson, Leroy “Al” Nelson, Irene Renken and Bertil Nelson.

Position Description: Supervise youth leadership programs and provide direction, coordination, and consultation for all functions within the organization to help strengthen public or private programs and to involve a community of supporters. Also help to promote the mission of Rise Up Reno Prevention Network efforts and its programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Includes the following, and other duties as assigned: • Oversee all Youth Leadership program sponsors, coordinate all campaign and grant requirements

• Manage reporting for grantors, including coordinating reports from sponsors

• Create social media content, manage pages and engagement statistics

• Be available for activities that fall outside normal business hours

• Coordinate recruitment, processing, and recognition of youth

• Coordinate participation requirements, including program logistics with school staff and youth.

• Conduct and prepare others to conduct trainings

• Support the philosophy, mission, and policies of Rise Up Reno, USD 308 Hutchinson Public Schools and any other schools or organizations representing all entities professionally.

• Educate the public, school personnel, parents and students about the purpose and goals of the Youth Leadership groups

• Be available for presentations to groups in order to share the Rise Up Reno mission, recruit new volunteers, and/or fundraise

• Be open to constant feedback on programming

• Be a Visible and Positive Liaison in the Community. Work as a team member.

• Ensure that Rise Up youth meet their responsibilities, follow protocols and expectations, and stay up-to-date on the latest alcohol, drug and tobacco (ATOD) research and news

• Be proficient with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Canva, and various social media platforms

• Attend trainings and meetings as needed. Schedule and conduct meetings as needed.

• Maintain relationships with community agencies

• Develops, promotes, and maintains a wide range of youth activities within agreed-upon budgets

• Informs youth of policies, procedures, and standards of Rise Up Reno

• Confers with staff and youth members to resolve grievances and promote cooperation and interest

• Maintain confidentiality and respect personal information concerning volunteers, donors, school district staff and Rise Up Reno staff

• Confer with Director for budget, advice and special needs of youth activities

• Actively participate in planning and executing all fundraising efforts
