Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 800 block of North Main on the east side.

In 1950, the Safeway grocery store company decided to build another store in Hutchinson. A roundtop with brick walls was constructed at 820 N. Main, just north of First Baptist Church.

The grand opening was in March of 1951. The first photo shows the busy store in 1957.

The second photo shows that store in the background during a parade showing off some of Wade Patton's antique automobiles.

This Safeway was active between 1951 to 1962.

In 1964, Banker's Investment Co. remodeled the space and had multiple office spaces within the building.

In 1978, the Security Pacific Finance Co. took over ownership, but was only there until 1985.

In 1987, the building was expanded and the Quest Center was born. This became an incubator for small businesses and the address was changed to 1 E. 9th. The third photo shows this enterprise about 1990.

In September 2013, HutchCC dedicated the Bob &amp; Lou Peel Allied Health Center into this location. The fourth photo shows the 1 E. 9th property today, still owned by HutchCC, that includes StartUp Hutch, which still includes the original 820 N. Main building.

Jesus, I trust in You! Jesus, I trust in You! Jesus, I trust in You!

Timothy Roy Oberle, 56, died peacefully surrounded by family on February 25th, 2025 in Hutchinson, Kansas. He was born on August 13th, 1968 in Hutchinson to John and Nadine Oberle. 

Tim graduated Trinity Catholic High School in 1986. He married his high school sweetheart, Shawna L. (King) Oberle, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in South Hutchinson on February 17th, 1989. He worked many years as a mechanic for the local Ford dealership, Jeff O’Neal. He then spent almost 23 years working for Sonoco Paper Mill.

In his free time, Tim was usually found fixing cars (a love he shared with his sons), working on some project Shawna probably started, or spending it with his family — he loved his grandchildren beyond measure — or praying his rosary on his front porch sitting in his rocking chair. He was a devout Catholic who loved the Lord more than anything. He often said that if his cancer would help others find the Lord, then he would rather go on being sick. Tim was a Eucharistic Adorer beginning in 1995 and made regular visits to the Blessed Sacrament all throughout his illness. 

Tim is survived by his wife of 36 years, Shawna; his children Madison (Sam) Nelson of Hutchinson, Joseph (Mackenzie) Oberle of Castle Rock, CO, Brennan (Dallis) Oberle of Hutchinson, and Gunner (Christine) Oberle of Hutchinson; parents, John &amp; Nadine Oberle of South Hutch; siblings Monty (Rowenna) Oberle, Carman (Eric) Turner, Chris (Ling) Oberle; 14 grandchildren; father-in-law Rick King and mother-in-law Kathy King; sister-in-law Brandi (Jason) Mahoney; sister-in-law Jamie Cox , all of Hutchinson; numerous nieces and nephews; and his dog, Lucky (Chuck). 

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Joseph “Joe” &amp; Esther Oberle; maternal grandparents, Therman “Bud” and Twyla “Shug” Long; two grandchildren and eight nieces and nephews. 

Parish rosary will be Sunday, March 2nd, 2025 at 5:00pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, March 3rd, 2025 at 10:00am, both at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 612 S. Maple, South Hutchinson, with Father Eric Weldon officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00pm Saturday and 1:00 to 3:00pm Sunday at Elliott Mortuary.  The family will receive friends following the Rosary Sunday evening at the church, from 5:30 to 7:00pm.

The Blue Dragons claimed the 2024 NJCAA DI Football National Championship with a 28-23 come-from-behind win over Iowa Western on Dec. 18, 2024 at Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium in Canyon, Texas.

The&nbsp; Blue Dragons finished the season 11-1 and claimed their second national title in program history.

Commissioner chairperson Don Bogner read the following proclamation.

🏈 HutchCC recognized at County Commission meeting Wednesday

WICHITA, Kan.&nbsp;&mdash;&nbsp;The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference is pleased to announce the 2024-25 KCAC Men's Basketball all-conference teams and award winners.&nbsp;Student-athletes were selected for all awards&nbsp;by vote of the KCAC head men's basketball coaches. Oklahoma Wesleyan University took home the regular-season conference title for the fourth consecutive season, with a 19-3 record in conference play, as part of a 22-6 overall record. KJ Spiller of Friends University and Derrick Talton Jr. of Oklahoma Wesleyan were named KCAC Men's Basketball Co-Players of the Year by the coaches.&nbsp;Spiller ranks fifth in the KCAC in points per game (17.0) and is the Falcons' leading scorer, while being a very efficient shooter (50.9% from the field, 40.9% from three-point range, and 74.8% from the free-throw line). He also pulls down 5.9 rebounds per game and dishes out 2.3 assists per game. Talton is a force on both ends of the floor for the Eagles, scoring 12.6 points per game (second-leading scorer for the Eagles). while pulling down 4.3 rebounds per game and dishing out 5.1 assists per contest (first in the KCAC; 14th in the NAIA). On the defensive end, he average 2.9 steals per game (second in both the conference and the NAIA behind Bethany College's Devin Spencer) and pulls down 3.3 defensive rebounds per game as a guard. For his efforts on the defensive end, Talton was also named the conference's Defensive Player of the Year for the third season in a row. Najee Jones of Ottawa University was named the KCAC Men's Basketball Newcomer of the Year.&nbsp;Jones scored 16.4 points per game in the regular season (was the Braves' second-leading scorer), dished out 3.2 assists per game (ranks ninth in the KCAC), and pulled down six rebounds a game (rankes 15th in the KCAC). He led his squad in assists and was third on the team in rebounding. Julian Smith of Sterling College earned the KCAC Men's Basketball Freshman of the Year honor.&nbsp;Smith averaged 9.4 points per game, 4.4 rebounds per game, and 0.8 assists per game. He was the Warriors' third-leading scorer, third on the team in rebounding, and tied for fifth on the team in assists.&nbsp; Phil McClintock of Friends University was named the KCAC Men's Basketball Coach of the Year by his peers.&nbsp;In only his second season at the helm of the Falcons' men's basketball program, McClintock orchestrated a turnaround from a team that went 9-18 overall and 6-16 in KCAC play a year ago, to a team that went 22-6 overall, 18-4 in the conference, and finished second in the regular season standings. NTSB releases statement regarding gas explosion investigation

WICHITA, Kan.&nbsp;&mdash;&nbsp;The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference is pleased to announce the 2024-25 KCAC Women's Basketball all-conference teams and award winners.&nbsp;Student-athletes were selected for all awards&nbsp;by vote of the KCAC head women's basketball coaches. Kansas Wesleyan University took home the regular-season conference title with an 18-4 record in conference play, as part of a 22-6 overall record. Ryan Showman, the Coyotes' head coach, was named the Lonnie Kruse Coach of the Year by his peers. Korynn Clason of Sterling College was named the KCAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year. Clason leads the conference with 22.0 points per game (ranks fifth in the NAIA) on an efficient 48.6% from the field, 45.3% from three-point range, and 87.2% from the free-throw line. Taylor Jackson of Friends University was named the KCAC Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. Jackson leads the conference in rebounds per game (12.4/game; tied for 12th in the NAIA), with 7.8 of those rebounds per game coming on the defensive end. Jackson also leads the KCAC in blocks per game (2.3), which is good for a tie for 12th in the NAIA. Ali Kamies of Evangel University earned the KCAC Women's Basketball Newcomer of the Year honor. Kamies leads the Valor with 13.8 points per game (11th in the KCAC), field goal percentage (48.9%), and steals (1.8/game; tied for 8th in the KCAC). Dominique Schutte of Ottawa University was named the KCAC Women's Basketball Freshman of the Year. Schutte averages 11.6 points per game and 2.9 rebounds per game. Schutte led all freshman in the KCAC in scoring, was the Braves' second leading scorer in total points, and led the KCAC in total three-point field goals made (77). The following athletes were selected&nbsp;by the conference women's basketball coaches&nbsp;as All-KCAC First Team, Second Team, Third Team, Honorable Mention, Defensive Team, and&nbsp;Freshman Team.

🏀 KCAC releases all-conference selections, Halstead's Schutte named Freshman of the Year

After 94 years of life, Lucille “Lupe” Vieyra passed away in the presence of family, on February 23, 2025, at Hester Care Center, Hutchinson. She was born November 15, 1930, in Hutchinson, to Luís and Elvira (Magaña) Martínez. She worked for Eaton Corporation, retiring after 34 years. Lucille took great pride working as a female in a male-dominated industry.

An avid sports enthusiast, Lucille always enjoyed watching her favorite sports, most especially if it was her KU basketball team or her Kansas City Chiefs. Basketball was a particular favorite, and she enjoyed many games at the NJCAA tournament. Another favorite of hers was catching the lively marching bands going down Main Street around the Kansas State Fair.&nbsp;

She enjoyed tending to her yard, sitting outside in her garage chatting with her neighbors, and shopping trips to Goodwill. A lifelong devout Catholic, she served her church community by helping with funeral luncheons at Saint Teresa Catholic Church, Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Nothing brought her more joy than moments spent with family, like going out to A&amp;W for a root beer, taking family photos, or simply being around each other. Two things she always taught her children were the importance of a clean home and because, Lucille was shaped by the struggles of the Depression, the vital mantra: "If you do not need it, do not buy it!"

Lucille married Genaro “Hank” Vieyra, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, they later divorced. He passed away November 28, 2020.

Survivors include: her children, Cindy Keim, Carolyn (Tim) Powers, and Chris Vieyra; grandchildren, Jon Keim, Joshua Keim, Jeremy Keim, Jenniffer Powers, Robert (Jessica) Powers, Amanda (Michael) Shaffer, and Bradley Vieyra; great-grandchildren, Henry Powers, Charlotte Powers, Jack Powers, Taylie Mehl, and Ryan Shaffer; sister-in-law, Shirley Martinez; bonus family, Cathy and Gayle Johnson and family; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; brothers, Jack, Joe, Luís and John; sister, Margaret; son-in-law, Steven Keim; grandson-in-law, Christopher Simon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. Parish rosary will be 10 a.m., followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 28, 2025, both at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 612 S. Maple, South Hutchinson. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. &nbsp;

Friends may sign her memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting Tuesday, February 25, 2025 until day of the service at Elliott Mortuary.

Lela Elizabeth “Betty” Galloway, 89, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at Longleaf Bee Cave, Bee Cave, TX.

Betty was born on August 17, 1935, in Hutchinson, KS, the daughter of Kenneth Jack and Helen (Epperson) Anderson. On October 15, 1988, she married E. Dexter Galloway in Lawrence, KS. They shared 20 years of marriage before Dexter passed way in 2008.

Betty graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1953. She worked for Avco Financial Services as a manager and retired after 20 years of service. She was the past President of Heart of Kansas Quilt Guild and the past President of Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America at Emanuel Lutheran Church. She attended and was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church, Hutchinson, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dexter Galloway; sister, Jacquelyn Blackwelder; brother, Jack Anderson; granddaughter, Jennifer Spall; and a son-in-law, Matthew Lee.

RENO COUNTY —Fire officials in Hutchinson on Monday released the Battalion Chief Dashcam of the gas explosion on Ave. E and Main on Saturday.

Just before 9:30a.m., crews were in the area for a report of a gas odor.  Crews found the issue at the intersection of Ave E and South Main Street.  The video starts as crews were setting up operations per protocol.

&nbsp;Responding crews could not find a source at that location so they moved their way down Main Street.&nbsp;

When they arrived to the corner of Avenue E and Main Street, they saw the gas coming up through the road and sidewalk.  They entered the business there and their monitors activated.

Crews noted that all the occupants of the building were out, and they exited the building and within 30 seconds the building exploded.

The area between Avenue A and Frank Hart Crossing and Popular Street and Adams Street were ordered to evacuate. Later Saturday night, the evacuation zone was reduced to the area bounded by Avenue C to Avenue F, and Walnut to Adams.

Kansas Gas Service crews&nbsp;continue to work on repairs and restoration in the area of the explosion. There were no injuries reported.

Residents say increases in average household income and businesses that pay above average wage are the top indicators of economic progress in Reno County.

They also identify attracting new businesses, removing and renovating blight, access to affordable child care, improving public infrastructure, and expanding local businesses as the top five economic and community development priorities for the county as a whole.

These viewpoints come from the 1,021 respondents to last summer’s Love Where You Live Community Perception Survey, part of Hutchinson Community Foundation’s three-year effort to provide Reno County communities with data and a process that will empower residents to make positive change and boost community pride.

Ohio-based Innovation Economy Partners designed the survey, which kicked off the first phase of the initiative. Reports were generated for Buhler, the Fairfield area, the Haven and Yoder area, Hutchinson, Nickerson, Pretty Prairie, South Hutchinson and Reno County overall.

These gatherings centered on reviewing the survey, discussing priorities and brainstorming ideas for progress. The following were the priorities identified in each community workshop:

Buhler: unique partnerships and better communication; a destination restaurant; public infrastructure; and housing, especially to attract families  

Pretty Prairie: an all-day restaurant; new business lot development; and redevelopment of vacant properties  

South Hutchinson: redevelopment of Poplar Street as a business district and attracting builders to sell and/or renovate blight  

Nickerson: development north of town near the new highway, housing, blight removal, and community engagement and communication  

Haven and Yoder area: infrastructure planning, incentives to attract manufacturing, a grocery store or chain restaurant, and housing to attract families  

Fairfield area: blight removal, safety concerns, housing programs, and uniting communities in ways other than the school district  

Hutchinson (four workshops): housing affordability and development, higher wages, blight removal, and community engagement and communication

The third and current phase of the initiative is supporting communities’ continued progress on their priorities with grant opportunities. Hutch CF is accepting project proposals for Fund for Reno County grants. The first impact cycle, due Feb. 28, focuses on supporting community catalyst projects that improve community engagement, communication and confidence. Local governments and 501(c)3 organizations can apply for grants up to $2,500 for this purpose. Other grants available now are in the areas of dynamic culture, thriving kids and strong organizations.  

In August, the foundation will consider larger grants for community and economic development. Information about all Hutch CF grant opportunities can be found at hutchcf.org.  

In the meantime, the community foundation is working alongside the county, the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce, StartUp Hutch, South Central Kansas Economic Development District, Interfaith Housing &amp; Community Services and the Reno County Child Care Task Force to connect communities to the organizations and programs that can support their priorities, as well as exploring county-wide initiatives that could make a difference for every community. 

"We believe this process will help residents feel heard, identify shared priorities, and have some agency and resources to make progress year after year,” said Kari Mailloux, Hutch CF director of strategy. “Hopefully it creates a stronger sense of ownership and hope across the county."

Ruben Anthony “Tony” Delgado, 43, formerly of Hutchinson, died unexpectedly after a sudden illness February 17, 2025, at his mother’s home in Hutchinson. &nbsp;He was born February 18, 1981, in Mannheim, Germany, to Adella Marie (Murillo) Luna and Louis Placido Delgado, Jr.&nbsp;

Anthony attended Trinity Catholic High School and was self-employed, working in construction. &nbsp;He enjoyed running, boxing, barbequing, and volunteering with the homeless in Kansas City. &nbsp;Above all, Anthony enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. &nbsp;

8 a.m. Sunday UPDATE from Hutchinson Fire Department:&nbsp;The Hutchinson Fire Department has had discussions with Kansas Gas this morning and the evacuation area has been minimized to the following area. Main Street from Avenue D down to Avenue G 1 Block East and West of Main Street on Avenue E. This includes all businesses on both sides of Main Street and 1 residential home on Avenue F. Currently there are 18 businesses and 1 residential home without gas service. If you live outside of the stated area, you may return to your home.

Kansas Gas will continue to have a large presence in this area for the next couple of days.  We ask that you continue to avoid the area as work is being done to remedy the situation.  Kansas Gas is continuing to monitor the area for gas and will continue throughout the next couple of days. 

Overnight, crews have made significant progress and all hands are working on fixing the situation. 

If residents in the area are concerned about their home having gas inside, Kansas Gas has a hotline to call.  Please call 888-482-4950 and reference the Hutchinson incident.  Kansas Gas has technicians in the area that will come by and monitor your home for gas.  If you feel you have a gas emergency, please contact 911 for HFD response.

9 p.m. UPDATE: Officials tell us that as of 8 p.m., the evacuation zone has been reduced to the area bounded by Avenue C to Avenue F, and Walnut to Adams.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The evacuation will remain in place until morning while Kansas Gas Service repairs the gas main. Once that repair is complete, Kansas Gas Service will contact each resident to restore service.&nbsp;

ORGINAL POST: Shortly before 9:30 a.m., the Hutchinson Fire Department said they were called to the area of B and Main for reports of a natural gas odor. Responding crews could not find a source at that location so they moved their way down Main Steet.&nbsp;

When they arrived to the corner of Avenue E and Main Street, they saw the gas coming up through the road and sidewalk.&nbsp; They entered the business there and their monitors activated.

Crews noted that all the occupants of the building were out, and they exited the building and within 30 seconds the building exploded.&nbsp;

Officials said that the fire is being fed by a 10-inch natural gas line. Officials
say that the body of the fire is under control, but the street and fire remains
on fire due to the gas leak.&nbsp;

Hutchinson Fire Department crews were forced to take a
defensive stance and are using unmanned water streams to fight the fire.&nbsp; 

Mayor Stacy Goss said that all the City of Hutchinson fire
crews are deployed along with crews from Reno County Fire District Number 3,
Buhler and South Hutchinson fire departments. 

The area between Avenue A and Frank Hart Crossing and Popular
Street and Adams Street are currently under an evacuation.&nbsp; 

There has been an evacuation and warming center set up at
the Salvation which is located at 700 North Walnut. 

Kansas Gas and Evergy have crews on the scene monitoring the
evacuated buildings. Kansas Gas released a statement to Hutch Post:

“Our crews have responded to 428 S. Main in Hutchinson,
Kansas and are working with the Hutchison Fire Department and local emergency
responders. More information will be released once officials have completed
their investigation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The primary concern of Kansas Gas Service is safety. As a
precautionary measure, the area around the location is being isolated and
secured.&nbsp;

If you smell natural gas, leave the area immediately then
call 911 and our Emergency Line 888-482-4950. Do not use any electrical
equipment such as phones, garage doors, or light switches until you are a safe
distance away from the odor.”

We are scheduled to receive another update from the
Hutchinson Fire Department.&nbsp; We will

say that the body of the fire is under control, but the street and fire remains

UPDATED: Hutchinson Fire Department battles southside fire, evacuation zone set up

RENO COUNTY — Two people were injured in an accident just before 8 a.m. Friday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Ford F150 driven by&nbsp;Kendrick Dale&nbsp;Nisly, 24, Hutchinson, was eastbound on Kansas 61 at South Peace Road. 

The pickup rear-ended a 2001 Chevy Suburban driven by Kyla Jeanne&nbsp;Thornsley, 33, Arlington, who was stopped to make a left turn. The impact pushed the SUV into oncoming traffic. A westbound 2016 Chevy Cruze driven by Carlee Jo&nbsp;Davidson, 19, Partridge, struck the Suburban on the&nbsp;&nbsp;passenger side.

EMS transported&nbsp;Thornsley and&nbsp;Davidson to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Nisly was not injured.&nbsp;Davidson was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

2 hospitalized after 3-vehicle Reno Co. crash

Erlinda Vieyra, 90, died February 19, 2025, at her home in Hutchinson. She was born April 6, 1934, in Dodge City, Kansas, to Antonio and Lus (Perez) Flores, Sr.

Erlinda graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1953. She worked for the family restaurant, Anchor Inn, and as a paraprofessional for USD 308.

In her spare time, she enjoyed playing bingo, tending to her garden, playing volleyball, rolling strikes in her bowling league, and leading both boy and girl scouts.

Erlinda was a spiritual and faithful catholic.  She was an active member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, South Hutchinson. She was president of the OLG Women’s Altar Society and a member of their Spanish choir.  

Erlinda poured her heart and soul into her family as a devoted homemaker, earning the title of the world’s best mother and grandmother. Above all, nothing brought her more joy than spending precious time with her family.  

On June 7, 1958, she married Trunkalino Velasquez “Trunkie” Vieyra, in Hutchinson. They shared over 60 years of marriage, prior to his death on June 1, 2019.

Erlinda is survived by: her children, David (Irene) Vieyra, Michael (Kathy) Vieyra, Edward (Marla Booher) Vieyra, Raylene (Mike) Selgrade, Lawrence (Michelle) Vieyra, Barbara Vieyra Luna, and Carolyn (John Dye) Vieyra; siblings, Antonio (Rachel) Flores, Jr., Jane (Santos) Amaya, Dolores “Lola” Flores, Cindy Flores, Rosie Landron, Daniel (Carol) Flores, Larry Flores and his companion Connie Johnson, Gregory (Susan) Flores, Sr.; 18 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Trunkalino “Trunkie” Vieyra; daughter, Felecia “Lisa” Vieyra; sisters, Cruz Marquez and Celsa Flores; and brother, Gary Allen Flores.

Gary W. LaClair, 72, of Hutchinson, died February 18, 2025, surrounded by love. He was born November 17, 1952, in Hutchinson, to Gene and Beverly (Beal) LaClair.&nbsp;

Gary graduated from Hutchinson High School with the class of 1970. He worked at Doskocil Food Service and owned his own detail shop along with a car lot. Gary proudly worked as a supervisor for the City of Hutchinson where he retired from. He enjoyed working and servicing vehicles. Mostly, Gary loved spending time with his granddaughters playing his guitar and listening to music with them.&nbsp;

In 1971, Gary married Dana Conrad. They shared nearly 54 beautiful years together.

Gary is survived by: beloved wife, Dana LaClair, of Hutchinson; son, Jason (Laura) LaClair of Colorado; Mindy LaClair of Hutchinson; granddaughters, Katelyn and Audrey Wilson of Hutchinson; brother, Kevin LaClair of Kansas City; sisters, Debra Bigler of Utah and Kelley LaClair of Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Jesse Martin Hensel, 81, of Hutchinson, died February 20, 2025, at Hospice House, with his loving family by his side. He was born October 6, 1943, in Dodge City, to Walter M. and Goldie (Bunch) Hensel.

Jesse graduated from Dodge City High School in 1962, and loved to tell of playing the trombone in the marching band in the 1961 Rose Bowl Parade. He also played basketball and baseball, was in a bowling league and was a member of the Walther League.

He stayed in Dodge City to begin his collegiate career at Dodge City Community College. There, he was a member of the Conquistadors basketball team, which beat Casper College 73-68 to win the 1964 National Junior College Athletic Association Division I National Championship, an accomplishment that landed he and his teammates in the Dodge City CC Athletics Hall of Fame. He then went on to play basketball at Kansas Wesleyan University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He later attended Emporia State University, where he earned his master’s degree in education.

Jesse honorably served in the United States Army from 1966-1968, then embarked upon a 29-year career as an educator, teaching physical education at Sherman Middle School in Hutchinson.

One of his proudest accomplishments was the 34 years he spent as a college and high school football, basketball and softball official, working games across the state of Kansas with a crew of guys that became his closest friends. He delighted in sharing tales of his adventures on the gridiron and hardwood, the players he watched ascend from the high school game to college and pro sports stardom, and the many after-game meals he shared with his officiating crews. Even after he retired, those who watched games with him got a master class in officiating, as he couldn’t help but critique the refs.

He maintained his passion for sports in retirement, watching just about every sporting event that came on TV, but most importantly his beloved New York Yankees and Kansas Jayhawks basketball. He also spent the months of August to January poring over fantasy football notes. For many years he competed in a league with his childhood best friend, Jim Reidl, and his sons, and it became one of his favorite pursuits.

When he wasn’t tending to his fantasy football team, he spent his days collecting sports cards and delving into the world of Hot Wheels collecting. He was well-known to many retail workers from Hutchinson to Emporia, as he obsessively sought the special Treasure Hunt versions of the miniature automobiles. He could tell you what new models were due to be released, the day and time delivery trucks typically arrived at area stores and when new stock would be put on the shelves. In that hobby, he found some kindred spirits his family often heard about.

He also spent many years playing Texas Hold ‘Em at the Moose Lodge in Hutchinson. His family isn’t really sure whether he ended his card-playing career up or down in earnings, but he was rich with stories he brought home from each session, and boy, did he love telling his stories. 

Many of those stories were relayed to his son-in-law, Brent Adams, a broadcaster and journalist, whom he sometimes accompanied to basketball games for which Brent was doing play-by-play for radio. He’d share the tales of his playing and officiating days and spend the drive home breaking down the officials’ performance. They loved to talk sports and looked forward to fishing outings, where they tried to outdo one another with the biggest bass and shared many laughs along the way.

All of those pursuits began to take a backseat when his true passion came around: his grandkids. Holding that national championship trophy couldn’t have compared to the smile he beamed the first time he held his twin granddaughters, Brinley and Madison Adams, in 2016, his granddaughter Elaina Adams in 2018, or when he got his first grandson, Milo Hensel, later that year. He delighted in the time he spent talking and playing card games with them when they would visit, and even challenged himself to learn technology to be able to regularly FaceTime with them. He loved buying cards and thoughtful gifts for them and never missed an opportunity to show them how much they were loved and appreciated.

He was also fiercely proud of his daughters, Stacey and Stephanie. He often shared stories of his fond memories of their childhood and beamed with pride when he spoke of their professional accomplishments and how they handled the challenges of motherhood.

And one of the sweetest ways he will be remembered was for the love and care he shared for his wife, Rita Clara Young, whom he married on August 16, 1969. They were married for 55 years, and built a relationship dedicated to God and family.

Jesse was a gentleman and spread his kindness to those around him. He went out of his way to offer a compliment to those he knew, and many he didn’t, with genuine sincerity.

He was a long-time member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, where he frequently served as an usher, and on the board.

He is survived by: his wife, Rita; daughters, Stacey Hensel of Brooklyn, NY, Stephanie Adams and husband Brent of Spring Hill, TN; grandchildren, Madison, Brinley, and Elaina Adams, and Milo Hensel.

Jesse was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Don.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 407 E. 12th, Hutchinson, with military honors conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.
