Shirley A. Green, 70, of Hutchinson, died February 26, 2025, at Diversicare of Hutchinson. She was born September 27, 1954, in Pensacola, FL, to Marion and Ann (Hellman) Green.&nbsp;

Shirley graduated from Tustin High School in California in 1972. She attended Hutchinson Community College where she obtained her nursing degree in 1980. Shirley enjoyed Kansas and Hutchinson so much that she made it her permanent residence. She was proud to serve Reno County as a dedicated nurse. Shirley worked at Hutchinson Hospital and Mennonite Friendship Communities.&nbsp;

Shirley is survived by: siblings, Stephanie (Angel) Gonzalez of Lytle Creek, CA, Paula (Don) Pagel of Mira Loma, CA, Steve (Michelle) Green of Walnut Creek, CA; nieces, Rose Gonzalez, Ashley Pagel, Rebekah Fedkiw-Green, Meaghan Maldonado; and nephews, Phillip Gonzalez and Steven (Jihye) Gray.&nbsp;

Ernest Kenneth (Kenny) Jones, Jr, passed away March 2, 2025, at Diversicare-Hutchinson.  He was born August 15, 1931, to Ernest Kenneth and Opal Ilah Cook Jones in Neodesha, KS.

Kenny graduated from Neodesha High School in 1950. He farmed with his father and eventually joined the Army National Guard.  He served a tour of duty in Korea. After being honorably discharged, Kenny enrolled in the Milford Trade School in Milford, NE, to study diesel mechanics.

On September 1, 1956, he married Ruth Ann Hansen in Friend, NE.  They were married for over 68 years.  To this union were added two sons- Terry Brice and Tony Michael.

Kenny worked for the City of Neodesha’s water department and later for its power plant for nine years.  When the family moved to Hutchinson, he worked for Kansas Power and Light from which he retired after 25 years of service.

He is survived by his: wife, Ruth; son, Tony (Gena) of Olathe; and two grandsons, Andrew Jorgen Jones of Brooktondale, NY and Trevor Christian Jones of Emporia, KS.  He was preceded in death by his: parents, infant brother, Darrel; and son, Terry Jones.

There will be a Memorial Service Friday March 7, 2025 at 2 pm at Trinity United Methodist Church- Hutchinson with Rev. Dr. Kim Biery officiating. There will be a private family inurnment.

On April 4, 2004, Jean married John E. Sharp in Wichita, KS. They spent 14 happy years together before his passing in 2019. She had a love of the elderly and worked at Terrace Gardens Retirement Community in Wichita, KS as an activity director for 30 years.

Jean is proceeded in death by her parents, and husband, John.

She is survived by two sons, Mark Mains and Kent (Mary) Mains; one brother, Gary (Diana) Gillette; six grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a niece and 2 nephews, 2 great nephews, and lifelong friend, Carolyn Jeter.

Barbara Rose “Jake” Wilson, 94 passed away on her 73rd wedding anniversary, March 1, 2025. &nbsp;She wished to be with her husband, “Squirrel” on their special day. &nbsp;

Barbara was born in Pratt, Kansas on October 29, 1930 to Maude and Bill Jacob. &nbsp;She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and Pratt High School, in Pratt, Kansas. &nbsp;Following high school, she attended Mercy School of Nursing in Hutchinson, Kansas at the age of 17. &nbsp;

Barbara married her high school sweetheart, Earnest Wilson on March 1, 1952. &nbsp;They had two children, D. Craig Wilson and Barbara “Jeanne” Trezise.

Barbara was a dedicated orthopedic nurse for 42 years working for John Jarrott, MD. &nbsp;During that time, they traveled throughout western Kansas visiting and caring for patients at crippled children’s clinics during the polio epidemic.&nbsp;

She was proceeded in death by her parents, husband Earnest, sisters, Jean Ann and Collette and brother Gregory. She is survived by her two children Dr. Craig (Vicki) Wilson, Jeanne (Greg Garcia) Trezise; Grandchildren Rayne (Toby White) Templeton, Haley (Rob) Gandy, Matthew Wilson, Nicholas (Kerry) Wilson, Nate (Jenny) Downey, Megan (Dan) Nies, Scotty (Karena) Downey; Great-Grandchildren Walter and Steven Wilson, Cypress White, Wulff and Harlan Gandy, Robby and Liam Downey, and Lincoln and Jackson Nies; Brothers, &nbsp;Larry (Nancy) Jacob, Jerry (Arlene) Jacob, Phil (Carol) Jacob; and numerous nieces and nephews.

This Saturday will be a day filled with free gardening information for homeowners and gardeners. has been scheduled for March 8. The Hutchinson Horticulture Club’s “A Gathering for Gardners” will be held at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Which is located at 407 East Twelfth Street &nbsp;

&nbsp;It will be at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church at 407 E. 12th, just west of the Kansas Cosmosphere in Hutchinson. After missing two years because of COVID-19, the club resumed having this annual event in 2023. &nbsp;

If not for those two years, this would be the 36th year for this event. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. with the morning session beginning at 9 a.m.&nbsp;

This presentation will cover essential tips for cultivating healthy plants, selecting top-performing varieties, and growing tomatoes for maximum flavor.&nbsp; His presentation is for beginners and seasoned gardeners.&nbsp;

The final presentation for the morning begins at 11 o’clock. Calla Edwards, Butler County horticulture agent with K-State Research and Extension, will present “Sedums and other Succulents.”Sedums are known for using less water. In the past few years, the availability of various varieties of sedums and other succulents has increased dramatically. She will share photos of some of her favorites and give suggestions for their use in the landscape.&nbsp;

&nbsp;The afternoon programs will resume at 1 p.m. with Mike DeRee, sales representative for Ball Seed Company, presenting “The Best Annual and Perennial Plants.” He will be looking back through the years and reviewing those plants that have proven themselves as true winners to consider as potential additions to your gardens.&nbsp;

At 2:15 p.m., Kevin Nelson, a master gardener from Douglas County, will address “Gardening as We Age.” This presentation will make the case for the benefits of gardening and will encourage gardeners to continue well into the golden years. He’ll give examples of how to change beds, look at plant choices and tools so a seasoned gardener can still do the most with the space he or she has and the desire to do so.&nbsp;

Gathering of Gardeners set for Saturday

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A woman accused of driving a stolen vehicle that was involved in a crash that killed a Hutchinson woman has made is due back in court Monday afternoon.

Katelyn Elizabeth Barrioz, 24, Wichita, is schedule for a preliminary hearing before Judge Seth Rundle, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In November she was charged with First-Degree Felony Murder, Second-Degree Murder – Reckless, Felony Flee and Elude, Aggravated Burglary, Auto Theft and Criminal Damage to Property, according to Wichita Police spokesman Andrew Ford.

On October 27, police located an occupied stolen vehicle at the Riverwalk Apartments, according to Officer Kris Gupilan. Officers monitored the vehicle using unmarked cars, and air support was requested from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

&nbsp;The vehicle stopped at Walmart, 29th and Rock Road in Wichita. Officers deployed spike strips to prevent the vehicle from leaving, successfully deflating two tires.

Despite this, the suspect later identified as Barrioz, fled the Walmart parking lot, striking a police vehicle.

Officers did not pursue the vehicle, but KHP air support continued to track it from above. The vehicle proceeded to a business on North Webb Road, where two individuals exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

One individual was apprehended, while&nbsp; Barrioz stole the van from the business and fled south on Webb, then west on 29th Street, according to Gupilan.

KHP Air maintained surveillance of the stolen vehicle, which, at 29th and Wilderness, collided with a&nbsp; Chevy Cobalt.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported the stolen 2024 Ford Transit Van driven by Barrioz, 24, Wichita, was westbound in the eastbound lanes in the&nbsp;8700 block of E 29th St N in Wichita traveling in the inside lane.

The van struck an eastbound 2010 Chevy Cobalt driven by Mandy Lynn&nbsp;Buckwalter, 43, Hutchinson, head-on.

Buckwalter was pronounced dead at the scene. EMS transported Barrioz to Wesley Medical Center for treatment. She was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on Tuesday evening, according to online jail records. Police presented their case to the district attorney on Thursday.

Barrioz remains jailed on a bond of $1.2 million.&nbsp;

Plea hearing for stolen vehicle crash that killed Hutchinson woman

Donald Grover Gress, 75, of Hutchinson, Kansas, passed away onFebruary 26, 2025, at KU Heart Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.

Born on March 12, 1949 in Bethel, Kansas, Donald was a husband, father, and brother. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Susie Bernard Gress, and their son, Samuel Gress. He is also survived by three sisters: Elaine Gress, Bernadette Bunkers, and Rosemary Gress, all of Excelsior Springs, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Donald was the owner of Don’s Drywall and Construction and worked alongside his wife in running Bernard’s Restaurant, Bernard’s Pit Stop at the Kansas State Fair, as well as Catering &amp; Concessions. His strong work ethic and dedication to his family and business will always be remembered. Donald’s presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is also survived by three sisters: Elaine Gress, Bernadette Bunkers, and Rosemary Gress, all of Excelsior Springs, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.Donald was the owner of Don’s Drywall and Construction and worked alongside his wife in running Bernard’s Restaurant, Bernard’s Pit Stop at the Kansas State Fair, as well as Catering &amp; Concessions. His strong work ethic and dedication to his family and business will always be remembered. Michael&nbsp;taught English, Speech Communication, Philosophy, Journalism, and Religion courses at a number of locations including Butler County Community College (El Dorado, KS), Northeastern State University (Tahlequah, OK), Kansas State University (Manhattan, KS), Westminster College (Fulton, MO), and the United States Navy.&nbsp;&nbsp;A successful debate coach, he chaired the Speech Department at Westminster College.

Michael&nbsp;was also a talented artist, singer, and author.&nbsp;&nbsp;A long-time resident of Leonardville, KS, in retirement he devoted his time to watching classic movies, listening to and/or reading political commentary, writing, drives through the Flint Hills, and his greenhouse.&nbsp;

Michael&nbsp;married Della Doyle on October 3, 1969.&nbsp;&nbsp;They had one daughter, Heather,&nbsp;&nbsp;born on February 25, 1971.&nbsp;&nbsp;Michael&nbsp;and Della divorced in 1974.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, and his daughter, Heather.

Michael&nbsp;is survived by two grandchildren:&nbsp;&nbsp;Jordan (Wichita) and Sutter (El Dorado).

No public service is planned.&nbsp;&nbsp;The family will have a private service.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - U.S. Senator Jerry Moran addressed the issue of tariffs and the Kansas economy. &nbsp;&nbsp;

He stated that he’s been in contact with the Secretary of Agriculture and the Secretary of Commerce as well as the White House about the new tariffs. &nbsp;&nbsp;

“I understand the value of tariffs and trying to make sure that the practices that are so unfair, or that China, which tries to steal our technologies, are adversary and trying to develop the format for the world China, we need to be paying a lot of attention to but in the general circumstance of tariffs around the globe, we have a lot of harm that can come to Kansas.” said the senator. &nbsp;

He added, “Agriculture into the Kansas economy, almost always the retaliation. If we impose tariffs, some other country retaliates with tariffs on our products, and almost always those are agriculture commodities.” &nbsp;

The United States produces more food than the country can consume, so that makes the United State an export nation in terms of agriculture. &nbsp;&nbsp;

“Anything that reduces our markets, including those retaliatory tariffs, are real problems.” Moran added. &nbsp;

It is the same with Kansas manufacturers. Moran stated, “It's also true in Kansas that we have a lot of small manufacturers. Steel and aluminum are important to them. Those manufacturers, often in Kansas, produce farm equipment, and so the increasing cost of steel aluminum means an increasing cost of so there has to be the right balance. Is the case that I keep trying to provide to folks who are making decisions about tariffs.”&nbsp;

Moran working with leaders to minimize tariff damage

Hutchinson –&nbsp;Hutchinson Correctional Facility (HCF) resident Lamoine Wiebe, 57, died Saturday, according to a media release from the Kansas Department of Corrections.

 Wiebe was found unresponsive in his cell Saturday morning. Staff began life-saving measures immediately and continued after emergency medical services arrived but were unsuccessful. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.

Wiebe was serving a 233-month sentence for one conviction of voluntary manslaughter in Harvey County, Kansas. He had over two dozen previous convictions that included theft, burglary, robbery, flee or attempt to elude, obstruction, DUI and for drug crimes, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the KDOC, the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The investigation is ongoing.

Lowell Kenneth “Ken” Keen Jr., 90, of Hutchinson, died February 25, 2025, at Good Samaritan Society–Hutchinson Village. He was born September 9, 1934, in Hutchinson, to Lowell K. and Winifred M. (Mosher) Keen.

Ken graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1952 and the University of Kansas in 1956. He was a beer salesman for over 60 years, starting in high school working for his dad at Central Distributing Company and retiring at age 80 from City Beverage. Ken loved going to the Kansas State Fair - he held the record for longest continuous attendance at the Fair at 85 years - and enjoyed more than his share of caramel apples. Ken cherished time spent with family most and was affectionately known as “Snowflake” to his grandchildren.

On March 1, 1962, he married Catherine J. “Kathy” Waldron, in Hutchinson. They shared nearly 63 years of marriage. She survives.

Also surviving are: his daughters, Cynthia Kreul (William) of Richardson, TX, Patty Jenks (Don), Pamela Keen, Amy Keen-Colle (Mark), all of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Cody Kreul (Nick Lafferty) of Brooklyn, NY, Matthew Keen of Wichita, Zachary Keen (Katlyn) of Hutchinson; great-grandchildren, Coy and Andi Keen of Hutchinson; and many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Joyce Bowman and Judith Anderson.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday, March, 3, 2024 at Elliott Chapel. The service will be livestreamed and the link below to view it will be active beginning at 12:45 p.m. the day of the service.

 </figure>Lowell Kenneth “Ken” Keen Jr., 90, of Hutchinson, died February 25, 2025, at Good Samaritan Society–Hutchinson Village. He was born September 9, 1934, in Hutchinson, to Lowell K. and Winifred M. (Mosher) Keen.Ken graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1952 and the University of Kansas in 1956. He was a beer salesman for over 60 years, starting in high school working for his dad at Central Distributing Company and retiring at age 80 from City Beverage. Ken loved going to the Kansas State Fair - he held the record for longest continuous attendance at the Fair at 85 years - and enjoyed more than his share of caramel apples. Ken cherished time spent with family most and was affectionately known as “Snowflake” to his grandchildren.On March 1, 1962, he married Catherine J. “Kathy” Waldron, in Hutchinson. They shared nearly 63 years of marriage. She survives.Also surviving are: his daughters, Cynthia Kreul (William) of Richardson, TX, Patty Jenks (Don), Pamela Keen, Amy Keen-Colle (Mark), all of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Cody Kreul (Nick Lafferty) of Brooklyn, NY, Matthew Keen of Wichita, Zachary Keen (Katlyn) of Hutchinson; great-grandchildren, Coy and Andi Keen of Hutchinson; and many extended family members.He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Joyce Bowman and Judith Anderson.Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday, March, 3, 2024 at Elliott Chapel. Class 6A is in Overland Park, 5A in Park City, 4A in Salina and 3-1A in Hays.&nbsp;

Day two will begin at 9 a.m. with consolation wrestle backs, consolation quarterfinals, consolation semifinals, third place matches, fifth place matches and then championship introductions before the final matches.

🤼‍♀️ Buhler's Macey Parks leads 6 area girls wrestlers in state title matches Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan, - We had a chance catch up with Kansas U.S. Senator Jerry Moran to visit a bit about the farm bill.  He and U.S. Senator Roger Marshall are both on the Senate Ag Committee, thanks to Moran being able to get an exemption to be on the committee.  

When asked, Moran replied, “We've had two hearings in the last month, both related to input from producers from across the country, from National Farm organizations as well as commodity groups, all with the design of making sure they have we get the latest input into what should be included in a new Farm Bill.” 

When asked about the importance of the Farm Bill he replied, “A reason to be on the farm, on the ag committee this year is a farm bill needs to be done, and we want to have that input. And the committee is doing its work to set the stage to produce a farm bill for American agriculture this year. 

We visited about the importance of assistance from the Capitol.  He replied that congress disaster assistance for farmers across the country.  “In addition to that, Congress, at the end of the year passed and the President signed into law disaster assistance for farmers across the country, disasters related to both weather and certainly in Kansas, the disaster is drought as well as economic disaster”, said Moran.  

The prime concern for ag producers is rising costs and diminishing income.  He stressed that they have been in communication with the Secretary of Agriculture.  They want to make sure that the money gets into the pockets of farmers and ranchers.   

“Then that money is spent within the community. Are whether you're a farmer or rancher or not you live in most places in Kansas, your economic well-being is determined by whether or not, farmers and ranchers are having any success.” Moran said.  

The pressing issue is how long before the bill makes it to the chamber floor.   

Moran said, “And at least you know, based upon conversations with my colleagues on the committee, talking to leadership of the of the Senate, the expectation is to complete a farm bill before what we call our August recess, when Congress adjourns for the month of August. So we have about six months in order to get this complete” 

Consumers are getting hit at the check out line.  When asked about the price of food, inflation is still a problem.  “I mentioned it earlier in the cost for farmers, their input costs, feed, fertilizer, natural gas, diesel fuel, labor costs, interest rates, all mean that they're being squeezed, and Americans are feeling that” Moran said.   

He did add that the Secretary of Agriculture this week announced a new five-point plan on dealing with egg prices.  

“It involves a number of things, including research and inoculation and compensation for losses. We'll see how that actually gets rolled out.” He continued, “But the goal is to produce more poultry in the United States, more poultry that's disease free, and to allow for greater imports of eggs from places outside the United States where the bird flu is not prevalent.”

Moran talks farm bill, assistance to farmers 

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp; -&nbsp;U.S. Senator Jerry Moran was in Hutchinson on Friday morning to meet with city officials to get an update from their perspective of the gas explosion from last Saturday. &nbsp;He talked about what he learned from this trip. &nbsp;

“I was able to get away from Washington, DC, late last night, and came to Kansas. We certainly have been following the damage and destruction that's occurred as a result of a gas leak here in Hutchinson. “ said Moran. “And I wanted to hear from city officials if there was you know, what was transpiring.”&nbsp;

He’s concerned about making sure that this doesn’t happen again. &nbsp;He talked about the federal involvement in this investigation. &nbsp;

“The National Traffic Safety Board has been here investigating why a pipeline would rupture, and I had conversations with the chair of that board this morning by phone. And in addition to that, there are pipeline safety regulations in the Department of Commerce, in the Commerce Committee that I am a member of, so we're just trying to make sure that what needs to be done is taking place, and offer our help.&nbsp;

 Moran continued to say that he wants to know what Kansas Gas plans are in regards to safety. &nbsp;

“a takeaway for me is I think this community would like to know what Kansas gasses plans are in regard to making certain that the pipelines that currently are under the streets of the city are safe now and in the future.”&nbsp;

He said a second component moving forward that we need assurances from the utility that things are safe. &nbsp;

“A second component of that is a look into the future to have Kansas Gas reassure the citizens of Hutchinson, its public officials, that the that the safety that should be here is here, and that if there's things that need to be improved, or modifications or modernization needs to take place, that that's going to be taking taking place here, that we want to see that things are safe” said Moran. &nbsp;

🏀 3A boys, 2A girls sub-state action this evening

ANDOVER, Kan. — The Andover Trojan basketball teams celebrated Senior Night on Thursday with victories over the Hutchinson Salthawks.

The Hutchinson girls battled hard, but Andover pulled away late to secure a 54-42 win, marking their 19th victory of the season. In the boys’ game, Hutchinson held a 17-11 lead after the first quarter, but struggles at the free-throw line—going 8-for-21—and late turnovers allowed Andover to come away with a 65-54 win.

Grace Posh and Kaia Smith each scored 17 points for the Salthawks, but Andover responded to an early Hutchinson run to pull away for the 54-42 victory. Asia’h Sullivan and Grier Hand each scored 14 points, while Aliyah Green added 13 to lead the Trojans.

Hutchinson now travels to Salina South for a makeup game that has been postponed twice. The Salthawks currently sit in the No. 8 seed in the Class 5A West, which would give them a first-round home game when sub-state tournaments begin next week. Their opponent will be announced when seedings are released by the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) on Saturday.

Hutchinson got off to a strong start, but Andover used its speed and quickness to turn a five-point halftime lead into a 65-54 win.

Lamar Govain led Hutchinson with 18 points, followed by Terrell King with 13.

Andover point guard Josh Kim scored 19 points, including three dunks. Teammate Owen Allman added 15 points, knocking down four 3-pointers—including eight second-quarter points that helped spark the Trojans’ comeback. Walker McClellan came off the bench to score 13.

Andover finishes the regular season at 17-3 and is currently the No. 3 seed in 5A West. Hutchinson, at 9-10, wraps up the regular season at Salina South. The Salthawks are currently No. 13 in the 5A West, but a win could move them up to No. 11.

On Thursday afternoon, the City of Hutchinson held a briefing to bring people up to date on the situation on South Main Street.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to public works director Cecil Weible the evacuation zone is down to an area between avenue d and avenue f and between Washington Street and Walnut Street.&nbsp; They are estimating that it will take approximately two weeks for completion.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

At the present time, five businesses are affected and Evergy says that they have twenty customers without electric service.&nbsp;

As of yesterday, the Hutchinson Fire Department was cleared from the scene and no longer has a presence at the scene.&nbsp; The fire department and&nbsp;Kansas Gas will meet business owners that have not been allowed into their buildings to be escorted by a firefighter and a KGS employee to get important documents that they may need.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

When asked, that policy was put in place by kgs and the fire department because there is still gas coming out of the ground.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KGS replaced 100-feet of gas line from the east to west under main street.&nbsp; The evacuation zone has been minimized to Main Street between Avenue D and to just north of Avenue F and from Walnut Street and Washington Street.&nbsp;

The city said that they will continue to provide updates as they become available.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
