HAVEN, Kan. —&nbsp;Haven High School graduate Nash Wray etched his name into Kansas baseball history this spring, finishing his prep career as the state’s all-time leader in base hits.

Wray recorded 155 hits over four seasons, breaking the Kansas State High School Activities Association career record. He surpassed the previous mark of 140, set earlier this spring by Hayden Kearney of Valley Falls.

“It means a lot,” Wray said. “It’s crazy to think about, but my coaches, my dad, and everyone around me helped me to accomplish what I got done.”

A left-handed batter and right-handed thrower, Wray was a four-year starter at shortstop and a mainstay in the Wildcats’ lineup. He was named a unanimous first-team All-Central Kansas League selection at shortstop and earned first-team all-state honors in Class 3A as a middle infielder.

Wray plans to continue his career at Hutchinson Community College, where he’ll play for head coach Brock Nehls. He is spending his summer with the Kingman Islanders, a member of the Jayhawk Collegiate League, to prepare for the jump to college baseball.

“It’s going pretty good so far,” Wray said. “It’s just going to get me ready for this fall and spring next year, to see college arms and stuff.”

Known for his speed and versatility, Wray batted left-handed to give himself an edge out of the box, particularly on bunts and infield hits. While he initially tried switch-hitting as a youngster, he quickly committed to the left side.

“I feel like I can get faster out of the box,” he said. “It’s easier to lay down a bunt to third and beat it out.”

Though the Wildcats never broke through to the state tournament, Wray said the experience playing alongside his teammates was unforgettable.

“It was really fun playing with the guys I played with throughout the four years,” he said. “They made it fun. My coaches and family and everyone else around me made it fun.”

A three-sport athlete, Wray also served as the Wildcats’ quarterback in football and point guard in basketball. He believes his multi-sport background was key to his success.

“Playing multiple sports helped me by making me stronger mentally and physically,” Wray said. “It helped me become faster, have better IQ, and be more savvy about baseball. It just made me a better athlete and a better person.”

At Hutchinson, Wray expects to play primarily shortstop but is also open to seeing time in the outfield, anywhere he can contribute.

“I just want to play,” he said. “Wherever I get put next year, I’ll be ready.”

Nash's younger brother, Brogan, also had a stellar season as a sophomore, earning first-team All-Central Kansas League third base and honorable mention all-state honors.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Municipal Band, one of the oldest continually operating ensembles of its kind, is celebrating its 150th year in 2025 with a full slate of summer performances, continuing tonight with its second concert of the season.

The band will take the stage at 8 p.m. in the recital hall at the Stringer Fine Arts Center on the Hutchinson Community College campus. Admission is free and open to the public.

Founded in 1875, the band’s longevity is a source of pride for its members and the Hutchinson community.

“A lot of people don’t know this, but the Municipal Band is actually written into the city charter,” said Charles Johnston, the group’s vice president. “It states that the city should maintain a military band. Originally, there was even a specific tax levied for that purpose. Over time, of course, that was folded into the general fund.”

Johnston said the ensemble’s funding and structure have evolved through the decades, but the mission has remained constant.

“Like many arts organizations over the years, our funding has waxed and waned,” he said. “So we're really pleased to have made it to 150 years. It's unusual for any organization, let alone a musical ensemble, to last that long.”

The group typically includes 35 to 55 musicians per concert and draws from a wide swath of the community, ranging from high school students to working professionals in fields like education, engineering, medicine and logistics.

“That’s one of the things I’m really proud of,” Johnston said. “The band continues to provide young people with their first professional gig. That’s what it was for me. I was in high school, sitting next to professionals and teachers. It was inspiring.”

He added that the diversity of the group adds depth and perspective to the ensemble.

“It’s made up of professional musicians, music educators, engineers, doctors, secretaries, nonprofit leaders and even FedEx drivers,” Johnston said. “All of these individuals had music touch their lives in some way.”

Each Tuesday performance features a new program, often assembled just hours before the show.

“We show up at 6 p.m., and by 8 p.m., we’re performing music we’ve often never seen before,” Johnston said. “Sight-reading is a crucial skill, and the Municipal Band relies on musicians who can do it well.”

After facing weather-related cancellations last summer in the central park area at HutchCC, the band has shifted its season indoors to the Stringer Fine Arts Center, where the recital hall offers both more space and protection from Kansas’s unpredictable weather.

“Last year we had to cancel three concerts, which was pretty unprecedented,” Johnston said. “And the gazebo at the park just wasn’t built to handle a group our size. So moving indoors has really solved a lot of those issues.”

This year’s summer concert series opened June 3 and continues on June 10, June 17, June 24 and July 1, with special performances by South City Jazz, an affiliated ensemble, on July 6 and July 15.

“It’s a little bit of everything,” Johnston said. “Marches, Broadway, patriotic themes, movie soundtracks, you name it. And every concert is different, with a fresh set of selections and a different conductor each week.”

This season’s rotation of conductors includes Abby Giles of Sterling USD 376, Sterling Reynolds of Central Christian School, Dan Brinkley of Nickerson–South Hutchinson USD 309, Daryl Koestel of Hutchinson USD 308, and Jeff Pelischek, retired from HutchCC.

The band expects to have between 50 and 75 musicians participate throughout the summer season, a reflection of both the ensemble’s broad reach and its deep community roots.

“It's a real cross-section of the community, and that’s a lot of people to coordinate and manage,” Johnston said. “But it’s worth it. Music brings people together, and that’s what this band has been doing for 150 years.”

DODGE CITY, Kan. — The 2025 Kansas Junior Amateur Championship tees off Tuesday at Mariah Hills Golf Course, with more than 150 of the state’s top youth golfers competing in a 54-hole stroke-play event that runs through Thursday.

Among those in the field are Hutchinson's Race Lusk (Buhler High School) and Miles Blaylock (Trinity Catholic), as well as Anika Paulsrud (Buhler High School) on the girls' side. Naomi Koontz of Newton is also set to compete in the girls’ division.

Lusk is scheduled to tee off Tuesday at 8:45 a.m. on Hole 1, alongside Jackson Taylor (Dodge City) and Owen Young (Wichita). Blaylock begins his first round at 12:39 p.m. on Hole 1, paired with Cohen Hageman (Wichita) and Braeden Masterson (Wichita). Paulsrud will start at 2 p.m. on Hole 1 with Mya Niehues (Concordia) and Ali Perry (St. Joseph, Mo.). Koontz is grouped with Hadley Neese (Overland Park) at 2:09 p.m. on Hole 10.

The championship includes five age divisions for boys and one for girls, with the field cut after Wednesday’s second round to determine Thursday’s final-round qualifiers. An overall boys and girls champion will also be crowned.

In 2024, Wichita’s Asher Whitaker and Emerie Schartz claimed the respective titles. Schartz returns to defend her girls’ crown.

Play begins each day with tee times off both No. 1 and No. 10 at 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The course is set up at approximately 6,900 yards for boys and 5,700 yards for girls.

⛳ Area golfers competing in Kansas Junior Amateur Tuesday

WICHITA, Kan. — Several area standouts from Hutchinson Community College, Hesston High School and McPherson College are among the honorees and finalists for the 2025 Greater Wichita Sports Banquet, scheduled for Thursday, June 26, at INTRUST Bank Arena.

The annual event, hosted by the Wichita Sports Commission, coincides with the presentation of the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award. The three finalists for the national award include Caden Bodine (Coastal Carolina), Rylan Galvan (Texas) and Carson Tinney (Notre Dame).

Hutchinson Community College is once again well-represented following a dominant year in athletics. Sophomore Hailey Jackson, a key contributor on the Blue Dragons’ women’s basketball team, is one of three finalists for Junior College Female Athlete of the Year. On the men’s side, HutchCC football standout Waymond Jordan Jr. is a finalist for Junior College Male Athlete of the Year.

Last year, HutchCC earned major honors at the banquet, as Kiki Smith was named Junior College Female Athlete of the Year after guiding the Blue Dragons to the NJCAA national championship. Head coach John Ontjes received the Gene Stephenson Coach of the Year Award.

Hutch Post-area well-represented among Wichita Sports Banquet award finalists

BUHLER, Kan. — A new dining option is rolling into Buhler later this month, but its roots run deep in carnival traditions and small-town values.

Bubba’s Burgers, owned and operated by longtime concessionaire Matthew Hall, is set to open Wednesday, June 25, at 111 N. Main St. in downtown Buhler. The restaurant will be open Wednesday through Monday and closed Tuesdays, offering what Hall describes as “good food fast” with a retro diner feel and a commitment to fresh and local ingredients.

“I’ve been around food my entire life,” Hall said. “My mom and dad did carnivals, festivals, fairs, like the Kansas State Fair, and I started working for them as soon as I could see over a counter.”

Hall, a third-generation concessionaire who grew up in rural North Dakota, started his own mobile food business at age 15. Over 26 years, he built it into a multi-offering operation, serving items like funnel cakes, Philly steak sandwiches, corn dogs, blooming onions, fried veggies, and fresh-battered cheese curds. Now, he’s taking that experience off the road and into a permanent location.

“We’re just taking the wheels out from under it,” he said. “It’ll be homemade food served fast, the way we did it at the fairgrounds, faster than McDonald’s.”

The name “Bubba’s Burgers” carries personal meaning. Hall named the restaurant in memory of his late son, Carson (AKA Bubba), who passed away in 2018 after a battle with brain cancer.

The menu will feature hand-breaded pork tenderloins, chicken dinners, and rotating daily specials. Wing Wednesday, Taco Thursday with deep-fried taco shells, and Fried Chicken Friday are already locked in. A prime rib sandwich special is also in the works. There will even be Philly steak sandwiches, including three specialties, the Wisconsin topped with cheese curds or the spicy fire Philly.

The diner will offer hand-scooped shakes in 15 flavors, dubbed “Twisters”, along with soft-serve cones and sundaes. The twisters will be a a taste of nostalgia in every bite, made with hand scooped ice cream like the old days.

Hall said he’s focused on sourcing as many ingredients locally as possible, including produce from Smith’s Market and meats from Jackson Meat. His relationship with Chris Barnes, owner of Smith’s Market in Hutchinson, played a pivotal role in the restaurant’s development.

“Chris is one of my closest friends,” Hall said. “When I was looking to transition out of the mobile business, he kept telling me to be patient, that the right thing would come along. He’s been a big supporter through all of this.”

Barnes’ encouragement helped guide Hall toward Buhler, and their shared belief in buying local helped shape the restaurant’s philosophy.

“I love Smith’s Market, it’s a wonderful little store,” Hall said. “We’ve always tried to support each other’s businesses. It just made sense to bring that mindset to Buhler, and I hope the community sees that commitment in what we’re doing.”

The building, a longtime Main Street fixture, is undergoing extensive renovation. “It’s been more of a remodel than I expected,” Hall said. “But once you get started, you want to do it right. My grandpa always said, ‘If you don’t have time to do it right the first time, you don’t have time to fix it.’”

Hall credits Innovative Tint &amp; Graphics, a Hutchinson business, for the retro-style logo and signage. He said the design aims to match the interior’s nostalgic aesthetic.

Bubba’s Burgers is expected to employ three to four full-time staff along with several high school students for summer and evening shifts. Hall said the restaurant will be consistently open, hoping to bring reliability to a location that has seen turnover in recent years.

“When I walked down Main Street, it reminded me of home,” Hall said. “The community shouldn’t have to drive all the way to Hutch to get a good meal. We want to be a destination diner, one that sticks around.”

The opening is timed to align with Buhler’s Spark in the Park, where Bubba’s will debut a special “fireworks shake” as part of its grand opening celebration.

But it wasn’t really an egg — and it wasn’t Easter.

In fact, my mom has been gone for 17 years.

Before she passed, she was an avid gardener — a passion inherited from her mother. Both women could spend hours in the yard, lost in the rhythm of soil and sun. My grandmother loved flowering plants — perennials, annuals, anything that bloomed. My mom loved it all. Landscaping, vegetable beds, climbing vines — it didn’t matter. If it grew, she’d find joy in it. She even won a Yard Award once, though she’d never mention it herself.

Introverted and naturally shy, my mom had no need for social interaction. She needed her gardening tools, soap operas, and dog, which were her sanctuary.

She was wonderful — funny, caring, incredibly resilient. But like so many others, she struggled with something we couldn't fix: she was an alcoholic.

Like many addictions, hers started small. A drink here or there, but it only became a problem after my grandmother died, and we were told my dad only had a few years to live. That’s when the alcohol – the addiction – took over.

We tried everything to help. Interventions. Detox. Cutting off the supply. But she always found a way. When my dad died, her spirit seemed to go with him. Even gardening — her lifelong passion — lost its meaning. The addiction had sunk in too deep.

When she passed, I inherited more than just her things — I inherited her plants. I did my best to keep them alive. Later, when I met my wife and we moved into our own home, those plants came with us.

They became a living thread between past and present. My wife never met my mom, but she understood how much those plants meant to me. She didn’t have a green thumb at first, but she became one of the best daughters-in-law by caring for them — and for me, too.

Some of those plants still thrive today. But just after Easter this year, we noticed one was fading. My wife suggested repotting it.

My son and I took the plant outside to repot it into a larger container—something that hadn’t been done since before my mom passed away. As we pulled the plant and old soil from the pot, I discovered something unexpected: an Easter egg—my mom’s Easter egg.

My son noticed it too, and asked, “What is that?”

It was coated in dirt, the label barely readable — but I could still recognize it. A bottle of her favorite liquor, long hidden in the pot.

During my family’s fight with my mom’s addiction, we tossed out every bottle of alcohol in the house. Somehow, my mom would cleverly find ways to get more. And knowing we’d get rid of it, she started hiding them in closets, drawers, even outside. Whenever we saw the signs, we’d start searching. Quintessentially, we were in an adult Easter egg hunt.

Apparently, this one had gone unnoticed for nearly two decades.

It’s odd how something that I hated so much could stir up so much love. The heartache this object caused now brings a different ache, for what once was, and a longing to return to that time. That bottle brought back grief, guilt, and regret.

That bottle, and the substance inside, don’t define my mom. It’s not who she was. It’s what killed her. But that bottle gave me something in return: a chance to talk to my son. To tell him the truth about her — not just the struggle, but the beauty, too. The way she loved deeply. The way she poured herself into love for our family, animals, and yes, gardening, too.

In that moment, I heard her again — the way I always do.

And strangely, I’m grateful for that final Easter egg hunt.

Ten years ago, Floyd Bledsoe walked free after spending more than 16 years behind bars for a crime he didn’t commit. Today, he’s a father of three, an entrepreneur, and the owner of a small farm just outside Hutchinson.

On a chilly November afternoon in 1999, 14-year-old Zetta Camille Arfmann stepped off a school bus in the small town of Oskaloosa and walked into the trailer home she shared with her older sister, brother-in-law, and their two children. She was never seen alive again.

Just days later, Floyd Bledsoe—her sister’s 23-year-old husband—was arrested and charged with Camille’s murder. Despite maintaining his innocence, Bledsoe was convicted in April 2000 of first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated indecent liberties with a child. He was sentenced to life in prison plus 16 years.

In 2004, the Kansas Supreme Court upheld Bledsoe’s conviction. But questions surrounding the handling of the case persisted, particularly over a pretrial agreement signed by the prosecutor, the county sheriff, and a Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) agent to not conduct DNA testing on the evidence.

Bledsoe’s legal team secured permission to test the preserved biological evidence. The results were staggering. DNA from a vaginal swab taken from Camille’s body matched Bledsoe’s brother, Tom Bledsoe—not Floyd. Floyd’s DNA was not found on any of the tested evidence. Additional DNA evidence, including samples found on Camille’s socks, implicated Tom and the brothers’ father in the disposal of the body.

As the case unraveled, Tom Bledsoe died by suicide on November 9, 2015, in Bonner Springs. He left behind handwritten confessions, including a note addressed to his parents in which he admitted to raping and killing Camille and implored them to "please tell Floyd I am sorry."

One month later, on December 8, 2015, Judge Gary Nafziger vacated Floyd Bledsoe’s convictions. Prosecutors dropped all charges, and Bledsoe walked free after spending nearly half his life imprisoned for a crime he did not commit.

Since his 2015 exoneration, Bledsoe has settled in Hutchinson and started four businesses. Among them is F-N-J Construction, a home remodeling and decking company, and Bledsoe Serenity Homestead, a working farm where he sells fresh produce and teaches others how to grow their own food. 

The journey from prison to purpose hasn’t been easy. 

“It takes a toll — mentally, emotionally. It just drains you,” Bledsoe said of his wrongful incarceration. “But it’s also made me who I am today. I went in at 23 and came out at 39. It taught me what true family really is — and sometimes, that’s not the one you’re born into, but the people who choose to walk alongside you.” 

Now a father to three young children, Bledsoe’s focus is on creating meaningful experiences — both for his family and the broader community. 

That mission comes to life at the Serenity Homestead, where children can interact with animals, ride horses, and experience hands-on farming. 

“One of my goals is to teach people how to become self-sustaining,” he said. “You don’t have to rely on the grocery store if you know how to grow your own food.” 

“It’s been a lot of fun,” Bledsoe said. “I’ve learned a lot of stuff, gained a lot of great friends, and built a completely different life.”

A statewide micro-internship program is opening new doors for Kansas businesses to connect with college talent, thanks to a unique initiative supported by the Kansas Board of Regents and Department of Commerce.

Rick Kraus, Career Services Coordinator at Hutchinson Community College, joined BW's morning radio show this week to talk about how micro-internships are reshaping work-based learning across the state.

Unlike traditional internships or apprenticeships, micro-internships are short-term, project-based opportunities that typically last between 20 and 25 hours. These internships are often remote, and students are paid upon completing a specific assignment for the business, nonprofit or entrepreneur that hires them.

“This is a great way for employers to get valuable work done while helping students build their resumes,” Kraus said. “And with grant funding covering the first five projects, there’s no cost to the employer to get started.”

The program, launched in 2021, is part of the Kansas Board of Regents’ “Building a Future” strategic plan. It partners with national micro-internship platform Parker Dewey to match employers with students from Kansas public colleges and universities.

Eligible businesses must operate within state lines. While students from any public Kansas institution can apply for internships, employers have the option to restrict applications to a specific school — such as Hutchinson Community College.

“Say you’re a business in Hutch and you want a marketing intern from K-State — you can do that,” Krause explained. “But if you want to give the opportunity to a local Hutch CC student, you can set that preference when you post the job.”

After the initial five free projects, employers can continue using the platform at a cost of $500 per project. Of that, $450 goes directly to the student, and the remaining $50 supports administrative fees paid to Parker Dewey, the company that manages micro-internships nationwide.&nbsp;

Kraus emphasized that most micro-internships are flexible and remote, allowing students to work on their own schedule — even late at night or around class and sports commitments. Projects can range from data entry and social media planning to research and content development.

“It's really a win-win,” he said. “Students gain experience and employers get meaningful work done.”

Micro-Internship program benefits businesses and students 

A recent stretch of widespread rainfall and cooler-than-normal temperatures has brought significant drought relief to large portions of the Central and Northern Great Plains, according to the latest drought monitor update.

Between May 20 and June 2, much of Kansas, Nebraska, and northeastern Colorado received between 2 and 4 inches of precipitation, with some areas recording even higher totals. This influx of moisture, coupled with unseasonably cool temperatures during the latter half of May, contributed to notable improvements in drought conditions.

As of June 2 the southern half of Kansas from Pratt County east to the Missouri state line is now officially drought-free.

Elsewhere, more than half an inch of rain fell across southern Colorado earlier this week, prompting a one-category improvement on the U.S. Drought Monitor. Southeastern Wyoming also saw the removal of severe to extreme drought designations, thanks to recent rainfall, long-term precipitation indices (SPI) over 6 to 12 months, and updated drought assessments from the National Drought Mitigation Center (NDMC).

Meteorologists say ongoing monitoring and additional rainfall over the coming weeks will determine whether these trends continue into the summer growing season.

Rain, cooler temps bring drought relief

WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita State University will host the championship rounds of the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT) in 2026 and 2027, city and NCAA officials announced Thursday during Mayor Lily Wu’s weekly briefing.

The WBIT is a 32-team postseason tournament launched in 2024, that provides NCAA-funded opportunities for top women’s basketball programs that do not receive bids to the NCAA Tournament. Considered the women’s counterpart to the men’s National Invitation Tournament, the WBIT aims to elevate competitive postseason play across the country.

Games will be held at Koch Arena on March 30 and April 1 in 2026, and March 29 and March 31 in 2027.

Jessie Carmack, NCAA assistant director of women’s basketball, said the WBIT has played a key role in expanding visibility and opportunity for women’s programs nationwide.

“(The WBIT) represents the incredible growth in women’s basketball and the increasing recognition of the exceptional talent and dedication of female athletes,” Carmack said. “This platform allows programs to gain valuable experience on the national stage.”

Josh Howell, vice president of sports development for Visit Wichita, said the event will bring both economic and community benefits to the area.

“We are very excited to welcome, for the first time, this tournament that showcases some of the best in women’s basketball and delivers high-energy matchups that fans won’t want to miss,” Howell said in a statement. “In addition to the positive local economic impact and national TV exposure, this is a great competition for basketball fans in the region to experience in person.”

Koch Arena has a history of hosting major events, including The Basketball Tournament (TBT) each summer and the American Athletic Conference volleyball championship.

Considered the women’s counterpart to the men’s National Invitation Tournament, the WBIT aims to elevate competitive postseason play across the country.Games will be held at Koch Arena on March 30 and April 1 in 2026, and March 29 and March 31 in 2027.Jessie Carmack, NCAA assistant director of women’s basketball, said the WBIT has played a key role in expanding visibility and opportunity for women’s programs nationwide.“(The WBIT) represents the incredible growth in women’s basketball and the increasing recognition of the exceptional talent and dedication of female athletes,” Carmack said. “This platform allows programs to gain valuable experience on the national stage.”Josh Howell, vice president of sports development for Visit Wichita, said the event will bring both economic and community benefits to the area.“We are very excited to welcome, for the first time, this tournament that showcases some of the best in women’s basketball and delivers high-energy matchups that fans won’t want to miss,” Howell said in a statement. “In addition to the positive local economic impact and national TV exposure, this is a great competition for basketball fans in the region to experience in person.”Koch Arena has a history of hosting major events, including The Basketball Tournament (TBT) each summer and the American Athletic Conference volleyball championship.

According to local physicians and public health professionals, the state’s immunization rate for measles has dropped from 95%—the threshold for herd immunity—to around 92% in recent years. The dip in vaccinations is partially tied to lingering skepticism fueled by misinformation dating back to a now-debunked 1998 study that falsely linked the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine to autism.&nbsp;

“We’ve been dealing with concerns about vaccines for over two decades,” said Dr. Ellen Losew, a local pediatrician. “That 1998 study was fraudulent, but it did lasting damage. We’re still trying to undo that harm.”&nbsp;

In Pawnee County, health officials noted a sharp jump in measles cases—reportedly increasing from one to seven in a matter of days. Experts say this rapid spread is not surprising given the virus’s extreme communicability.&nbsp;

Measles is the most contagious virus we know of, said a Hutchinson-based clinician. “It can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves a room.”&nbsp;

The latest outbreak is believed to be moving north from Texas and Oklahoma. The southwest region of Kansas, including Dodge City and other surrounding areas, has seen clusters of cases. As summer begins and families travel within the state, officials emphasize that local travel—not just cross-country trips—poses a risk of exposure.&nbsp;

With children out of school for summer, officials encourage parents to stay vigilant and watch for early symptoms—especially if their child has been in group settings.&nbsp;“We want to reassure parents that their concerns are valid,” one provider said. “But vaccines are safe, and they’re essential. If you’re planning any travel—even within Kansas—now is the time to make sure your family is protected.”&nbsp;Measles vaccination typically begins at 12 months of age, but in the event of an outbreak or travel to high-risk areas, doctors may recommend vaccinating earlier.
