HUTCHINSON,
Kan. — Heartland Credit Union announced this week that Lisa Johnson has been
named the new Branch Manager at the HCU Salthawk Center.&nbsp; The HCU Salthawk
Center is the student-run branch located inside Hutchinson High School.

As Salthawk
Center Branch Manager, Johnson will manage the student interns and lead the HCU
financial literacy program at Hutchinson High School. She will also be involved
in the selection, training and ongoing development of the student interns
throughout the school year and will work closely with our Hutchinson High
School business program teacher partners.

Prior to
joining HCU, Lisa worked at the Hutchinson YMCA where she served as Childcare
Director and, most recently, as the HR/Accounts Payable Manager.&nbsp; Johnson
has an Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education from Barton Community
College and is pursuing a degree in paralegal studies.

HCU also
announced that Gleysha Mendez has been promoted to Branch Manager at the 23rd
and Severance branch, located at 900 East 23rd in Hutchinson.

Mendez has
been with Heartland since 2013, most recently serving as a Financial Service Representative.

EL DORADO – At the site of the biggest comeback in Hutchinson Community College men's basketball history in 2018, the Blue Dragons had the tables turned on them Wednesday night.

The Blue Dragons let an 18-point first-half lead slip away as Butler's Keyon Thomas nailed a 3-pointer from the right corner with 11.5 seconds remaining to hand Hutchinson a 66-65 loss at the Power Plant.

The Blue Dragons slip to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the Jayhawk West. Hutchinson plays host to Cloud County on Saturday at the Sports Arena. Butler earns its first Jayhawk Conference win of the season and improves to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Jayhawk East.

Powered by a 15-0 run and holding the Grizzlies scoreless for 6 minutes, 39 seconds in the first half, the Blue Dragons built a 36-18 lead with 2:49 to play in the opening half. The Dragons shot 48.4 percent in the opening 20 minutes, holding Butler to 27.8 percent from the floor in leading 41-27 lead at halftime.

Momentum swung toward the Grizzlies right out of the second-half gate as Butler scored on its first three possessions. The Dragons were able to keep the Grizzlies at arm's length and led 65-55 with 3:06 to play after a&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/kuath_majok_xrls">Majok Kuath</a>&nbsp;follow-up dunk. That turned out to be the final Dragon points of the game.

Still leading 65-58 with 1:54 to play, the Grizzlies got two Noah Thomasson free throws and a Shae Mitchell 3-pointer to make it a point possession game with 1:20 to play.

The Dragons missed their final six shots and had two turnovers in the final minutes, which allowed Butler to complete the comeback with Thomas's 3-pointer with 11.5 seconds left on a Grizzly inbound play.

Kuath had a season-high 20 points and a season-high-tying nine rebounds to lead the Blue Dragons. Kuath hit 8 of 11 shot attempts. He also had a career-high four blocked shots.

Shawn Hopkins was one of four Blue Dragons to score in double figures with a team-high 16 points. Thomasson had 12 points, while Thomas and DeeJuan Pruitt finished with 11 points each.

🏀 Blue Dragons stunned as Butler rallies to win

EL DORADO, Kan. – The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team had season lows for points and shooting percentage and suffered its first loss of the season on Wednesday night.

Scoring 50 points or less for the first time since March 2018, the No. 11 Blue Dragons lost 56-50 to Jayhawk East leader and No. 25-ranked Butler at the Power Plant.

The Blue Dragons fall to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Jayhawk West. Butler is now 4-0 and 3-0 in the Jayhawk East. This was the fifth-straight meeting in the series where the teams have alternated wins.

Hutchinson had season-low marks for points scored, field goal percentage (29.4 percent), 3-point goals (5), 3-point percentage (15.2 percent), free throws (5) and three-throw percentage (33.3 percent). The Blue Dragons were ice cold in both the second and fourth quarters, scoring a combined 13 points on 5 of 29 shooting.

The Blue Dragons trailed 27-19 at halftime, but outscored the Grizzlies 25-12 in the third quarter. A&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2020-21/bios/ervin_kalyn_foze">Kalyn Ervin</a>&nbsp;3-pointer with 4:19 to play in the third gave the Blue Dragons their first lead since the first quarter at 33-31. 🏀 Blue Dragon WBB offense struggles in road loss to Butler

Stephen P. Thomas, 73, died on Jan. 30, 2021 at Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita, KS. He was born Aug. 3, 1947 in Great Bend, KS., the son of Neil and Rita (Malone) Thomas.

Stephen graduated from Sterling High School in 1965 and attended technical college in Colorado. On Jan. 9, 1967 Stephen enlisted in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged on Oct. 24, 1968. On May 1, 1987 he married Carol Thompson in Hutchinson. Stephen owned and operated Salt City Shuttle. He enjoyed coin collecting. His family said he could spend hours looking through coins.

Stephen was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Marie Harville.

Survivors include his wife, Carol, a son, Michael (Angela) Stout; a grandson, Devin Stout; brothers, John Thomas and Terry (Debbie) Thomas and several nieces and nephews.

Rosary will be 9:30 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021 at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, 211 E. 5th , Hutchinson, KS with Father Mike Maybrier officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson, KS. Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 8, 2021 at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel. Memorial may be made to Robert J. With limited numbers of fans allowed to return to live events starting Saturday, the Hutchinson Community College Athletic Department has announced its ticketing policies for the Sports Arena.

The KJCCC voted on Monday to allow up to 25 percent capacity of fan-available seating for each league venue.

For Blue Dragon basketball, the first games in the Sports Arena where fans will be allowed will be this Saturday when the Hutchinson women’s and men’s basketball teams play host to the Cloud County Thunderbirds. Blue Dragon Volleyball’s first home match for fans will be 6 p.m. on Monday against Colby.

Because things could change after February 28 – the KJCCC will re-evaluate the current policy on March 1 – season tickets and All-Sport Tickets will not be sold this season.

All tickets sold this season will be $5 general admission tickets to any available seat in the Arena red and yellow sections. The Blue section (floor seats) will not be occupied by the public this season. There will be blocked seats in the red and yellow sections to ensure social distancing.

The seating set-up in the Sports Arena will be for both basketball and volleyball this season.

The available number of tickets available for the public will vary from game to game. There will also be a purchasing cycle for events at the Sports Arena. That means that each Monday, a new ticketing cycle begins for that week’s home events.

The biggest change for fans this season is that Blue Dragon Athletic Endowment members are the only eligible people to purchase tickets in advance. The remaining tickets will become available to the public at 1 p.m. each game day and will be available for purchase when the ticket window opens one hour prior to the first game until tickets are gone.

"This is a great opportunity for people to help Blue Dragon Athletics by joining the Endowment,” Blue Dragon Athletic Director Josh Gooch said. “This is a way for Blue Dragon fans to make sure they have the opportunity to purchase their tickets this season and not run the chance of missing a game. This opportunity benefits our loyal Athletic Endowment members and the Athletic Endowment is essential to the success of Blue Dragon Athletics.”

Some other changes for games at the Sports Arena this season will be no concessions will be sold at games this season and no outside food or drink will be allowed. Masks must be worn to enter and worn while inside the Sports Arena.

Ticketing and capacity policies for Gowans Stadium, Hobart-Detter Field, Fun Valley and the Salthawk Sports Complex will be announced at a later date.

+ Athletic Endowment Members will be allowed to purchase tickets in advance.

+ Advanced tickets will be sold by the Hutch CC Ticket Office by calling 620-665-3594.

+ All Endowment/Club 1928 members can pick up their tickets on each game day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sports Arena Ticket Office Will Call window (south side of Sports Arena) or when the ticket office re-opens on game night one hour prior to the first game.

+ At 1 p.m. on each game day, Blue Dragon social media will post how many tickets remain for that day’s games.

+ Remaining tickets will go on sale one hour prior to the first game and will be sold on a first-come-first-serve basis until 25-percent capacity has been reached.

+ All tickets for home volleyball matches go on sale one hour prior to a home match.

Ticketing policy released for Sports Arena

The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team should have plenty of motivation on Wednesday when the renewal of the Blue Dragons' rivalry with the Butler Grizzlies takes play.

The game will be played at the Power Plant in El Dorado at 7:30 p.m. This will be the 192nd time the long-time Jayhawk Conference rivals to match up. Hutchinson owns a 125-66 all-time series advantage.

The Blue Dragons head into Wednesday's game unranked in the NJCAA national rankings. Previously ranked No. 14, the only blemish on Hutch's record was a 20-point loss to then-No. 8 and now-No. 6 Coffeyville.

The Dragons will also try to avenge a 73-63 loss to the Grizzlies in last year's matchup, also at the Power Plant.

Hutchinson rebounded from the loss to Coffeyville with an 83-70 victory over Neosho County on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/mayers_matt_jfk4">Matt Mayers</a>&nbsp;posted his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/robinson_chris_q1cl">Chris Robinson</a>&nbsp;led the Blue Dragons with a season-high 22 points.

Butler suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, dropping an 86-83 decision at now No. 16 Dodge City. The Grizzlies had two blowout victories before the Dodge City game over the Sterling College JV and Hesston College. Butler scored better than 100 points in each of those games.

The Blue Dragons will have to defend another high-scoring offense on Wednesday.

The Grizzlies, who lost to Coffeyville in last year's Region VI Tournament championship game, are averaging 103 points per game, shooting 52.6 percent from the field and 42.3 percent from 3-point range.

Shawn Hopkins scored 22 points in his season debut on Saturday against Dodge City. Treylon Payne is averaging 16.7 points per contest.

Mayers continues to set the scoring pace for the Blue Dragons, averaging a double-double at 18.0 points and 11.3 rebounds. HutchCC Men and Butler set to do battle for the 192nd time tonight in El Dorado

The defending Jayhawk West champion goes on the road for the first time this season to the defending Region VI Champion on Wednesday and it's now a NJCAA Top 25 national showdown.

The No. 11-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team (3-0, 2-0) heads to El Dorado to meet the No. 25 Butler Grizzlies (3-0, 2-0) at the Power Plant for a renewal of one of the Jayhawk Conference's classic rivalries.

The Blue Dragons head into the game after a wild last week that involved the largest come-from-behind victory in the John Ontjes era and a 42-point rout of Neosho County. Hutchinson moved up one spot in the national rankings this week to No. 11.

The Grizzlies are riding nine-game winning streak dating back to last season. So far in 2021, Butler has defeated the Tabor College JV, Colby and Dodge City by an average of 34.3 points per game. The Grizzlies jumped into the national rankings on Monday.

The top two defensive teams in the KJCCC will square off on Wednesday. The Blue Dragons rank No. 2 in the Jayhawk Conference, allowing 51.7 points per game. The only team better is Butler at 43.0 points per game allowed. Blue Dragon opponents are shooting 33.3 percent against them and Hutchinson is forcing 30.6 turnovers per game. Butler is allowing opponents to shoot 24.7 percent from the floor and are forcing 25.7 turnovers per contest.

Five Blue Dragons are currently averaging in double figures led by&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2020-21/bios/gore_lojong_i68o">Lojong Gore</a>'s 14.0 points per game. K.K. Adams, who has a team-high nine 3-pointers is averaging 13.0 points per game.

Guard Skyla Knight leads Butler at 16.0 points per game. She is also averaging 4.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists. The Grizzlies also return all-KJCCC center Tamara Nard, who is averaging 8.7 points and 8.0 rebounds per game.

First road trip for the Blue Dragon WBB turns into top 25 show down

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2020-21/bios/thorne_jenna_xncq">Jenna Thorne</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2020-21/bios/briggs_shadee_xm04">Shadee Briggs</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2020-21/bios/price_chloe_rbgs">Chloe Price</a>&nbsp;all had double-doubles, but the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team couldn't overcome the Barton trio of Mylena Testoni, Jo LaForce and Maria Santos in a four-set Jayhawk West loss to the Cougars on Tuesday night at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons were dominated in the first two sets and made a push in an 18-25, 15-25, 25-22, 27-29 loss to the Cougars. The Blue Dragons drop to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the Jayhawk West. Barton improves to 6-1 and 1-0.

The Dragons trailed two sets to none and 13-9 in the third when the offense finally started to come to life. Briggs had five kills and a service ace in the third set. Back-to-back Briggs points on a kill and service ace gave Hutchinson a 17-15 lead. The Dragons led 22-18, only to see Barton scored four in a row to tie the set, but a Cougar attack error and back-to-back kills by Briggs and Throne gave Hutch the third set.

Hutchinson was three points away from forcing a fifth set leading 22-16, but the Cougars scored six-straight points to tie the score at 22. Tied at 25, a&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2020-21/bios/lane_kenna_obyd">Kenna Lane</a>&nbsp;kill on an overpass gave the Dragons a set point at 26-25. Hutch fought off three match points all on Thorne kills. Tied at 27, kills by Ana Caroline, Siva Melo and Testoni capped off a 13-5 run to close out the Blue Dragons.

Thorne finished with 16 kills and 13 digs for her third double-double of the season.

Briggs finished with 12 kills and 12 digs.

Price, Hutchinson's sophomore setter, had 44 assists with 11 digs, two kills and two blocks.

Lane finished with season highs of eight kills and 13 digs. Freshman libero&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2020-21/bios/reeder_shelby_zpe9">Shelby Reeder</a>&nbsp;had 17 digs.

Barton out-hit Hutchinson 59-48 and had six service aces to the Dragons' three. The Blue Dragons had 9 team blocks to Barton's three. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2020-21/bios/murrell_shelby_tlgr">Shelby Murrell</a>&nbsp;had six total blocks, including two solo blocks. Testoni had 16 kills to lead the Cougars. Jo LaForce had 13 kills and Maria Santos had 11 kills.

Blue Dragon Volleyball drops four-setter to Barton

ENID, Oklahoma – The Northern Oklahoma College-Enid Jets hit four home runs and scored a combined four runs in their final two at-bats to spoil the 2021 season opener for the Hutchinson Community College baseball team on Tuesday.

The Blue Dragons rallied from three runs down twice to take a two-run lead after 6 1/2 innings, but couldn't hold off the Jets in an 8-7 loss.

The Blue Dragons (0-1) will have a week off before traveling to El Reno, Oklahoma to take on the Redlands Cougars next Tuesday.

Trailing 4-1 after four innings, the Blue Dragon offense finally started to produce. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2020-21/bios/totosian_jack_hwf9">Jack Torosian</a>&nbsp;tripled home&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2020-21/bios/reetz_will_n5g4">Will Reetz</a>&nbsp;and then scored on the back end of a double steal with&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2020-21/bios/reetz_drew_rh0u">Drew Reetz</a>&nbsp;to cut the Jets' lead to 4-3.

The Blue Dragons took their first lead in the seventh with a three-run outburst. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2020-21/bios/loucks_p.j._xmtu">P.J. Loucks</a>&nbsp;smacked a two-run double to take a 5-4 lead. Loucks scored on an&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2020-21/bios/callahan_austin_vm9d">Austin Callahan</a>&nbsp;single to give Hutchinson a 6-4 lead.

NOC-Enid immediately responded in the bottom of the seventh when Calyn Halvirson hit a game-tying two-run home run to knot the game at 6-all. The Jets were set up in the bottom of the eighth with a walk and hit batter to start the inning. With the bases loaded and one out, NOC's Cody Savage ripped a two-run single through the left side of the infield for an 8-6 Jets' lead.

The Blue Dragons tried to rally in the in the top of the ninth. With runners at second and third with one out, Callahan hit a deep sacrifice fly to center to score pinch-runner&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2020-21/bios/holmberg_korey_4qwp">Korey Holmberg</a>&nbsp;and move Loucks to third as the tying run. That was as close as the Dragons could get.

Callahan led Hutchinson going 3 for 4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Loucks had a pair of doubles in his Blue Dragon debut with a run and two RBIs.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2020-21/bios/reetz_will_n5g4">Will Reetz</a>&nbsp;also had two hits, but the Blue Dragons left 14 runners on base.

The Blue Dragons used seven pitchers on Tuesday. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2020-21/bios/hornberger_luke_8hqc">Luke Hornberger</a>&nbsp;was tagged with the loss. It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of our beloved father, LaVon Emery Thompson. He was 91, passing away Jan. 27, 2021, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born March 15, 1929, in Ulysses, to Guy Emery and Mary A. (Coons) Thompson. He was met in heaven by the love of his life – Lorrine.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Patricia Wooledge, JoAnn Lockmann, June Bernhart, and Bob Thompson.

LaVon was a 1949 graduate of Partridge High School. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. LaVon was employed by Union Equity, a grain elevator company, retiring as superintendent in 1990 with over 30 years of service.&nbsp; He was a member of the American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68, Hutchinson, and a retired member of the Grain Elevators and Processing Society (GEAPS). Past President of the Reno County Pork Producers. LaVon was a member of the Haven Future Farmers of America (FFA) Alumni, and volunteered at the National Junior College Basketball Tournament held in Hutchinson.

On June 25, 1955, he married Lorrine Agnes Mann, in Hutchinson. They shared over 57 years of marriage, prior to her death on July 23, 2012.

In 1969, LaVon and Lorrine purchased forty acres of land south of Hutchinson and moved their family to the country. Being a talented craftsman, LaVon built many of the buildings on the farm, ran miles of water lines, and poured acres of concrete. He could fix nearly anything and never threw anything away. LaVon’s strong work ethic was visible to many and he instilled that in his children.&nbsp; LaVon truly led by example.&nbsp;

He was our hero, living a long, wonderful life. LaVon didn’t know a stranger and there wasn’t a dessert he didn’t like. He loved a good pair of overalls, and it was a rare occasion if he didn’t have some stain on his shirt (he had a tendency to miss his mouth whenever he was drinking coffee or sneaking a sweet treat). There wasn’t a place he couldn’t take a nap and he loved taking pictures. LaVon never missed a ball game or livestock show. In fact, he became ‘Grandpa’ to many of the friends he made at the activities he attended. He loved his friends and family, and we are blessed and grateful to have him in our lives.

LaVon is survived by his children, Greg and wife Patty Thompson of Hutchinson, Lori and husband Phil Wilson of Lakeville, MN, and Julie and husband Tim Dowd of Olathe; nine grandchildren, Adrienne Platt and husband Travis, Austin Thompson wife Breanna, Sam Wilson, Katie Wilson, Michael Dowd, Emily Dowd, Taci Slyter, Allison Goff, and Bryleigh Goff ; seven great-grandchildren, Brantley, Camden and Hayes Platt, Gage Smith, Kingston and Saylor Slyder, and Atticus&nbsp;Shultz.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, 2021, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, with Marc Hall officiating. The family asks that attendees follow COVID protocol. Burial will follow in the Sylvia Cemetery, Sylvia. Military honors will be conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Richard “Rick” Ojeda, 79, of Hutchinson, died, Jan. 30, 2021, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born Dec.10, 1941, in Hutchinson, to John and Elizabeth (Caudillo) Ojeda.

Rick graduated from Hutchinson High School and Sidney’s Hair Dressing College, but he often joked that he went to Yale, “in the front and out the back”. He was a cosmetologist and owner of Rick’s Hair Fashion. Rick studied, taught, and was awarded across the United States and Europe for his cosmetology. He was also very active in his community. Rick participated in Kansas For Life, Hispanics For Life, Wichita Police Advisory Committee, Racial Profiling Advisory Board, and the NAACP and several others. He was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church, Hutchinson and also supported Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Church of the Holy Cross, and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church for many years.&nbsp;

Rick is survived by: daughter, Dominique Ojeda, Clear Lake Shore, Texas; granddaughters, Chelsea Ojeda-Jones (Andrew), Seabrook, Texas, Meagan Smith, Wichita; brother, Tony Ojeda, Hutchinson; sister, Rosemary Ojeda, Hutchinson; three great-grandchildren; three nephews; and three nieces.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; brothers, Johnny and George Ojeda; and sister, Juanita Ojeda.

The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team moved up one more spot in the latest NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball national rankings released on Monday.

Last week was a wild one for the 3-0 Blue Dragons. Hutchinson pulled off the biggest comeback in the John Ontjes era rallying from 21 points down in the second half to defeat Coffeyville 70-63. The Dragons then routed Neosho County 100-58 on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons continued to be the highest ranked Jayhawk Conference team in the rankings. Butler joined Hutchinson in the Top 25 this week. The Blue Dragons and Grizzlies will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Power Plant in El Dorado. Hutchinson will play host to Cloud County on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

The top 5 teams in the rankings all remain, but in a slightly different order. Trinity Valley remains the unanimous pick for the No. 1 team in the nation. Northwest Florida State is No. 2, Chipola is No. 3, South Georgia Tech is No. 4 and previous No. 3 South Plains is now at No. 5.

Hutchinson has now been ranked in 38-straight ranking periods and 139 of the last 144 polls.

Blue Dragon Women move up to No. 11 in most recent NJCAA Poll

The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference voted on Monday to let limited numbers of fans return to league events.

That means that Hutchinson Community College fans can return to the Sports Arena beginning this Saturday, February 6. The Blue Dragon women's and men's basketball teams are playing host to Cloud County at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. this coming Saturday.

Tuesday's Blue Dragon volleyball match against the Barton Cougars will still be under the no-fan restriction.

The league voted to adjust the league's Covid-19 policy to allow member schools the opportunity to fill up to 25 percent of the available seats for fans at each league venue.

The mask mandate will still be enforced at all conference venues.

Each KJCCC school will set its own ticketing and capacity procedures for home events.

The Hutchinson Community College Athletic Department will release its ticketing plan for the Sports Arena this week in time to purchase tickets for Saturday's games.

Seating plans for Hobart-Detter Field, Gowans Stadium, Fun Valley and the Salthawk Sports Complex will be announced at later dates.

One other change to normal game-day procedure is that there will be no concessions available at regular-season games this season at all league sites. There will be no outside food or drink allowed at Blue Dragon venues.

This adjusted league policy will run through March 1. The league will re-evaluate at that time if adjustments will be made.

KJCCC to allow limited number of fans at future events

Kan. — The Eagle Radio January Teacher of the Month presented by Allen Samuels CDJR is Amanda Hood. Hood is a 1st Grade Teacher at Morgan Elementary.

"I have taught here in 1st Grade for two years," Hood said. "In between Sterling College and here at Morgan, I taught English in China for a year in between."

School has looked different for her students because of the pandemic.

"First grade is a very hands on age," Hood said. "That's had to be changed and a lot more individual activities, versus trying to do things together with groups. It has looked a lot different, but we continue to try to make it work and find things that kids can do one on one at their desk or moving around."

Hood notes that the hybrid model of instruction has provided some advantages.

"I think it's really allowed for, since we only have half at a time, the relationships I've found to be deeper just with the students. I can get to know them better, with only having a few in during the day. That's been really neat to see where each kid is at one on one and being able to know them better."

One group has ten students in it, the other has seven. 

"Honestly, I've been really impressed with how well they handle masks," Hood said. "They just kind of wear them and there's lots of reminders, but they just know that's what they are supposed to do. They really do it well and seem to still have a good attitude."

Most of them have been able to handle the use of technology, but they do still need to touch things to be able to learn how to write, for example and coordinating that is difficult when they are not in person. 

Hood received a gift basket from Allen Samuels and her nominator, Justin Krehbiel, gets a pizza from Pizza Ranch.

Prep Scores from Saturday

With the first loss of the season still fresh and minus one of its top players, the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team passed an early-season test on Saturday against high-powered Neosho County at the Sports Arena.

The No. 14-ranked Blue Dragons rebounded from Wednesday's loss to No. 8 Coffeyville and closed out a three-game season-opening homestand with an 83-70 Jayhawk Conference victory over Neosho County.

Hutchinson improves to 2-1 and events its KJCCC record at 1-1. The Panthers fall to 2-2 and 0-2. The Blue Dragons travel for the first time this season on Wednesday when they go to the Power Plant in El Dorado to face the Butler Grizzlies.

The Blue Dragons played their first game without sharp-shooter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/baker_josh_lpkm">Josh Baker</a>, who is out of action for at least four weeks with an injury. Several Blue Dragons stepped up Saturday night in Baker's absence.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/robinson_chris_q1cl">Chris Robinson</a>&nbsp;scored a season-high 22 points with a 3-pointer and 11 of 13 free-throw shooting. Robinson also made several hustle plays to aid the Dragons.

Sophomore forward&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/kuath_majok_xrls">Majok Kuath</a>&nbsp;scored a season-high 19 points on 7 of 10 shooting. He added eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/mayers_matt_jfk4">Matt Mayers</a>&nbsp;posted his second double-double of the season with 25 points and 11 rebounds.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/bujdoso_isaiah_t7bk">Isaiah Bujdoso</a>&nbsp;had a season-high 11 points to go with six rebounds and five assists.

Hutchinson made 26 of 59 total shots (44.1 percent), going 3 of 16 from 3-point range and 28 of 37 from the free-throw line. Hutchinson had a season-high plus-20 rebounding advantage, outrebounding Neosho County 52-32.

The Blue Dragons had to overcome the eight 3-point night of Neosho County's Magic Reliford, who finished with a game-high 24 points.

The Panthers were 14 of 41 from 3-point range and 26 of 72 shooting overall (36.1 percent). Neosho County was held to season lows for points, shot percentage and rebounds. Neosho was 4 of 7 from the foul line.

De'Antrey Harris had 13 points, while Daniel Titus had 12 points and Deondre Buggage finished with 10 points.

Neosho County led by six at 14-8 with 14:07 remaining in the first half. The Blue Dragons chipped away and took a 15-14 lead after Robinson's three-point play, Reliford and Buggage each hit 3-pointers in the first half and the Panthers had a 25-24 lead with 7 minutes to play in the half.

Leading 30-29, the Blue Dragons scored 10 unanswered points to lead 40-32 with 20 seconds remaining in the half. Buggage hit a jumper just prior to the halftime horn and the Blue Dragons led 40-32 at halftime.

A Robinson free throws with 13:31 to go in the second half capped a 13-2 Blue Dragon run. Hutch pushed the lead to 20 for the first time with 11:55 remaining on a Kuath free throw.

Still leading 66-44, Reliford warmed up from distance by hitting four-straight 3-pointers to cut the Dragon lead to 73-66 with 3:41 to play, Hutchinson closed the game on a 10-4 run.

Neosho County falls to 1-3 and 0-2 in the Jayhawk East.Hutchinson hit 5 of its first 7 shot attempts in the initial surge against Neosho County. The Panthers, meanwhile, were blitzed by the Dragon press.
